The night before Keela’s surgery, she was surrounded by family and friends who joined together to pray. This pink prayer wreath is a reminder of the neverending circle of love as well as each person’s prayer for Keela and healing.

I don’t know about you, but doesn’t it feel like we were JUST here? We just finished ringing in the new year for 2018, and yet – somehow it seems we’ve come full circle and we find ourselves ushering in a brand new year already. It has been a crazy year, full of ups and downs.

Last month, I announced the news that my breast cancer had returned, and as I write this letter for January, I have just recently come out of a successful surgery. I will start radiation treatments in a few weeks and will, once again, hopefully and prayerfully be going to be well on the way to another recovery. I certainly have a lot of prayer warriors in my corner, and I appreciate your continued prayers and support.

This month, we also debut our 5th edition of Forsyth Community! We are so excited about our annual publication which focuses on life, work, and play in the Clemmons community. A great big special thank you to

Village of Clemmons’ own Shannon Ford, and the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce team – Ditra Miller and Ginny Chase. Please read all about the new issue on page 72.

DIY Home Spa Girls’ Night In

THERE’S ALWAYS A REASON TO GO FOR SOME PAMPERING…

So, why not make a party out of it? Whether you decide to go solo or invite your crew, make the most of your in-home spa, day or night.

Maybe it’s a home spa just for a special occasion, such as to prep for a wedding, party or event, or maybe you’ll want to schedule a regular weekly or monthly gathering that soothes your senses and makes you feel pretty. Either way, finding time to pamper yourself, your family and friends will boost your mood as you relax, restore, rejuvenate, renew and refresh your face, hair, body, and nails at home.

Another perk of a DIY home pampering party is that you and your friends can save lots of money. Forgo expensive beauty treatments and be reassured that all ingredients are healthy and organic, pure and natural. Instead of traveling anywhere to seek out your spa, head instead to the pantry and your refrigerator.

AMP UP THE AMBIANCE AND AROMA

It’s a party, and you’ll want to greet your guests with a welcoming glow by lighting up your environment with tea lights and candles. Arrange some fresh or artificial flowers. As long as no one’s allergic, use a room spray, perfume or body splash to scent your spa space.

MUSE-MOVING MUSIC

Get a heads up on your guests’ listening preferences. Do they prefer peace and quiet, light music or louder music? You can always switch it up throughout your spa session. Suitable spa music may include, but not be limited to new age, classical, jazz, acoustic guitar, and relaxing nature sounds like ocean waves, water fountains and babbling brooks.

Have food and drink ready when guests arrive, or you can ask them to bring their own dish or beverages to share and have a potluck style pampering party. Enjoy a beverage of choice, such as filtered water infused with fresh fruit or cucumber and mint, smoothies, vino, beer, coffee, tea, cocktails or mocktails!

LUSTROUS LOCKS

Condition your luscious locks with a carrier oil and essential oil(s) of your choice. Massage the oil(s) throughout, from scalp to strand. Then, for those with particularly dry, damaged or frizzy hair, begin by spreading a hot oil, conditioner, or hair masque over the hair and wrap it (optional). Set an alarm for 10-15 minutes.

FOR YOUR FACE

Then, move on to the face. Remove all traces of make-up. Apply a facial mask to the entire face or just nose area or T-zone, depending on skin type. Leave some space for the eyes to “breathe.” Set an alarm for 10-15 minutes, depending.

Put cool cucumber slices, tea bags or eye masques over your closed eyes.

And when the timer goes off, after your facial masque has fully dried and done its wondrous work, remove them and rinse off the mask.

Exfoliation is optional. Apply by gently (avoiding eye area is best) stroking skin in circular motions for no more than 5 minutes. Rinse with warm, then cool water, and pat dry with a towel.

Apply a toner, serum or just a moisturizer. A carrier oil blended with lavender essential oil works well, and your skin will sing if you do a DIY facial massage as you apply this.

MAKING MEMORIES

It may seem like idle time, but pampering pays off. The more you can relax and take the time to take care of yourself, the better off you’ll be.

Sharing your home spa experience makes a fun event, but it can also be an important time of beautiful bonding and meaningful memories!

While maintaining a successful facial plastic surgery practice in the Triad (with a satellite office in Boone), Dr. Neal Goldman also sets his sights far and wide, as his organization HUGS – Help Us Give Smiles – delivers compassion to young patients who rely on their lifechanging expertise. “We help children who suffer from facial deformity be free of humiliation and alienation,” explains Dr. Goldman.

With each HUGS mission trip, the dedicated team packs up surgical supplies, medicines, and generous hearts, and heads to Guatemala and Vietnam, with a goal of restoring smiles to children who thought their smiles might be lost forever. The week-long missions are spent repairing facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate – both frequent in these parts of the world – along with microtia, a deformity where the external portion of the ear is underdeveloped.

These patients often require a series of staged surgeries – allowing the same group of doctors to develop a true bond with the patients and their families.

HUGS team members, including surgeons, operating room nurses, floor nurses, and anesthesiologists, treasure getting to know their patients and the opportunity to spread hope for brighter futures.

For Dr. Goldman, it’s the pinnacle of a medical career that launched in his dreams even as a young boy. As a child, Dr. Goldman literally grew up around other cultures, realizing during these years that helping people all over the world was simply in his genes.

In 2010, he was approached by a beloved mentor and friend with an invitation to become involved in a mission trip, and his “calling” came to life. “That first mission to Antigua Guatemala reminded me of those dreams that brought me to medicine and surgery,” he says. “Now I know this will always be a part of my life.”

“Our ability to teach others these procedures has the potential to change medicine worldwide,” explains Dr. Goldman, of what he calls “intellectual inspiration.” In Vietnam, HUGS surgeons not only provide care to the children, but also are teaching the Vietnamese surgeons how to do these surgeries themselves.

Since every trip lands the team in the same country, working at the same hospital, within the same community, on the same week of each year, the process also results in the building of strong relationships. There are three mission trips a year, with anywhere from 20 to 24 medical professionals on each team.

“HUGS has one actual employee allowing for 90% of donations to go towards medical costs. All team members are volunteers who pay or contribute for their own airline ticket, hotel, and medical equipment,” explains Dr. Goldman.

“It’s bigger than just what we do for the children,” he says, noting the groups of patients become a wonderful support group within themselves, where kids with deformities realize they are not alone.

“It helps by just bringing this big group of children together, where they see other kids like them with the very same problem,” he says.

“Sixty to 80 kids may show up, along with their parents. Cleft lip or palate babies may go home the next day, but ear patients who often live six or seven hours away, sometimes in villages in the jungle where they have never seen another child with their problem, may stay an entire week.”

Ear Reconstruction After

For cleft lip and cleft palate patients, the surgery is not all about looks – it is also life-changing. “We hear stories time and time again of how profoundly these defects and deformities can affect these children in their culture. Because of the surgeries provided by HUGS, kids who were bullied and rejected can now go to school and children who never thought they would leave the house can now work as adults.”

HUGS is continuing to expand its missions, with Peru the newest destination for microtia surgeries, and a new program in the works for treating cleft lip rhinoplasty.

HUGS has performed over 1500 free surgeries in underdeveloped countries. “With numbers this high, we have the data that can change how people do these operations, making improvements and refinements in techniques that help other surgeons helping children with these deformities,” Dr. Goldman explains.

GOOD NEWS! ELIMINATE THOSE “DARN FLOATING SPOTS”

What are those irritating spots in my eyes and will they ever go away?

Sound familiar? The answer is: YES, you may be able to eliminate them.

Floaters are a common nuisance for most adults and are due to our aging process. At a young age, the vitreous (the gel-like substance in the eye) is transparent, but as one ages, imperfections gradually develop. The common type of floater, which is present in most persons’ eyes, is due to degenerative changes of the vitreous humor. Most often it is due to the separation of the vitreous gel from the back of the eye (the retina).

Simply Sterling

Floaters are visible because of the shadows they cast on the retina or refraction of the light that passes through them, and can appear as just one spot or together with several others that will cover more space. They may appear as spots, threads, or fragments of cobwebs, which float slowly before the eyes.

Whenever floaters appear, it is necessary to have an ophthalmic examination to determine the cause. If the symptoms are caused by degenerative changes, you may be eligible for treatment with LFT (Laser Floater Treatment) with a YAG laser. LFT is performed in the office, filed with insurance, and typically takes 20-60 minutes. You may need 1-3 treatments to totally achieve the necessary results.

The laser uses pulses of light to evaporate the vitreous floaters and to sever the vitreous strands. The floaters’ molecules are converted into gas bubbles which quickly dissolve and are reabsorbed into the vitreous.

REMEMBER:

1. If you develop floaters, be seen by your eye care provider to make sure there is no underlying medical concern.

2. If floaters appear suddenly and are numerous (can be accompanied by flashes of light), it is important to consult an eye care provider immediately as this could be an indication of a retinal problem such as a tear or detachment, or bleeding.

3. If the floaters are caused by degenerative vitreous changes, then LFT may be the choice for you.

Estate Sales: All About Family

The arrival of a new year always elicits plans for new routines and new adventures, and for some families, a plan for downsizing or even totally selling a beloved home and its cherished contents. Devoted to their clients and the community, the father/son team of Larry and Ryan Laster is well-versed in taking the next step when it comes to family treasures, and they place a personal focus on making the process as smooth as possible.

Open to the public in Winston-Salem since 2011, but with 40 years of experience in the art and antiquities industry, Laster’s Fine Art & Antiques combines valued expertise with discerning taste and a genuine compassion for what can be a challenging move. Those homes full of furniture and accessories are also full of memories.

“We see all kinds of situations where people need to get rid of antiques, art, and other household items,” says Ryan.

“Whether we handle a few pieces or an entire state, the process is very similar.”

If you’re facing this scenario in the New Year, know that the estate sale process with Laster’s begins with a thorough assessment of the value of everything to be sold, accomplished by a walkthrough of the family’s entire home, room by room. With a rough estimate on the value of the contents in mind, and based on the overall value of the house, the details come together to project a proposed commission.

“While we see quite a bit of foot traffic in and out of our store, we also reach buyers by listing sale items on our website,” says Ryan. “We are always looking for chests, side tables, sideboards, desks, and secretaries, and these kinds of pieces need to be solid wood – typically mahogany, cherry, or walnut.”

Antiques may be their specialty, but Laster’s will also accept high-quality, wellconstructed, newer items as well.

Arriving at the stage where it’s time to consider an estate sale can be cleansing, but also emotional.

“Each estate – and each family situation – is different,” explains Ryan. “Every family has different attachments to items from their childhood home. Some people grew up in a house where specific pieces were considered ‘decorative’ rather than functional, and cabinets were filled with pretty things to be admired, but never handled. Others grew up in homes where every item was used and appreciated.”

He stresses that they work solely within a client’s comfort zone and personal timeline, proceeding with a full estate sale only when the family is truly ready to let things go. A sale may cover everything from living room and bedroom furniture, to kitchen basics, draperies, and even linens, requiring a wide range of decision making.

encompasses thirty-four churches and three schools, and were originally suburbs when first built, but are now in the center of the city. The key aspect of implementing Place Matters in these communities was to engage and include the residents themselves as contributors and leaders.

Wilson explains, “These individuals make up what are known as Resident Impact Councils. These councils identify existing assets and needs in their communities and work directly with our teams at the United Way and other support agencies to direct resources in the most efficient ways within their neighborhoods. This resident-led process allows residents to direct and advise support organizations toward specific needs-based results. We’re taking an assets-based approach, using the strengths already present in a neighborhood to fulfill that neighborhood’s needs. These assets include the skills, gifts, and talents of the residents along with their strong desire to prosper.”

At United Way of Forsyth County, the community investment team understands that whatever country, state, city, or neighborhood we live in, each area presents us with a set of unique opportunities and challenges in our lives…in short, Place Matters. Access to education, health care, home stability, and community support are all predictors of future success. The United Way began considering a Place Matters initiative in 2013 while reviewing the progress of the program in other cities such as Atlanta and Cincinnati.

Chief Impact Officer Debbie Wilson notes, “In 2016, with the United Way already allocating approximately 20% of its annual budget to improve specific impoverished neighborhoods in Winston-Salem, the decision was made to allocate those funds through the Place Matters program in partnership with Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods, a local grassroots community organization. Our community has made tremendous progress over the years, but many people who live here face increasingly complex and interconnected challenges – challenges that are more prevalent in some of our neighborhoods. We believe that Place Matters can provide comprehensive solutions to complex issues.”

The United Way reviewed data that demonstrated that a person’s future success in life is determined by the zip code of his or her origin access and that this includes the level of education, financial success, physical and mental health, and the findings even predicted longevity. Knowing that education, health care, home stability, and community support are all predictors of future success, the United Way team determined that, as an organization, they needed to begin the work to address these determinants.

This was especially critical since Forsyth County has experienced an 81% increase in the percentage of the population living in poverty since 2000, and is number seven out of the largest metro areas in the US, with the greatest increase of people living in neighborhoods with highly concentrated poverty.

Place Matters addresses thirteen neighborhoods in the eastern part of the city that

The members of the Resident Impact Councils have emerged as natural leaders who desire to engage the community’s assets in conjunction with the supporting organizations to realize specific neighborhood goals toward prosperity. Support organizations listen to the Councils’ insights and recommendations, and a greater sense of accountability emerges, empowering the residents.

An example of community engagement using the assets-based strategy is the working partnership between the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Be Legendary program, the JRAMS Achieving Maximum Success program and Grace Presbyterian Church. The JRAMS is a mentoring program between Carver High School and Winston-Salem State University. The project name comes from the WSSU Rams football team and the Carver High School Yellow Jackets team. This mentoring program has contributed to the greatest level of growth in academic performance in a Winston-Salem High School bringing grade level performance from F to D+ for repeat ninth and tenth-grade students within one year.

Place Matters also opens the door for participation from non-profit agencies that are not currently United Way member agencies. An example is the recent partnership with Habitat for Humanity in which six new homes were recently built in a Place Matters neighborhood where no new homes had been built within the past fifty years. This contributes to the concept of family and home stability, which is essential for the future success of residents.

The Place Matters initiative is now in the third and final year of the first funding cycle for the designated neighborhoods. The United Way has invested 2.7 million dollars in programs and partnerships focused on strengthening these thirteen neighborhoods. The goal is for these neighborhoods to become self-sustaining in the assets-based model for success, and for the United Way to take gained knowledge from the initiative on to other neighborhoods. The principle that an entire city can benefit from the individual success of each neighborhood is at the core of the Place Matters initiative. The United Way of Forsyth County supports this principle in the implementation of Place Matters, as well as continues to serve the community as a whole regarding its four main areas of concern: health, education, financial stability, and basic needs.

The life of a restaurant reviewer is… well, what can I say? It’s awesome. And when I had the opportunity to review WinstonSalem’s own Mac & Nelli’s for the January issue, I was super excited! After all – great food, great atmosphere, and a diverse menu for the whole family! What’s not to love?! When we arrived, we met our server, Tamas, and the kitchen manager, Anthony.

As I listened to Anthony go through the list of what we would be sampling, I was very happy that I’d arrived hungry.

We started with a CAPRESE FLATBREAD. Y’all – Mac & Nelli’s has amazing flatbread pizzas. Historically, I’ve always gone for the Apple Bacon Brie because I love the savory and sweet combo on a crispy crust, but the Caprese was a huge hit at our table. You really can’t go wrong with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil – but when you serve them up on Mac & Nelli’s signature crispy

We also sampled Mac & Nelli’s signature BUFFALO WINGS. You may already know that Mac & Nelli’s is known for their wings.

With weekly 35 cent wing nights on Monday – word about a good thing gets out. But I hadn’t had a chance to try them myself.

Meaty and flavorful! You’ll go through a stack of napkins with these things, but isn’t that part of the fun when it comes to eating wings?

Next, our server brought out a SPINACH SALAD WITH GRILLED SALMON. I later had to do a drive around the parking lot to see where they were hiding the garden. The spinach was so fresh; you’d swear they just picked it! A generous portion of spinach was tossed with onions, tomatoes, dried cranberries, candied pecans, and bacon.

A serving of Raspberry Vinaigrette was the perfect addition. As mentioned, we had our salad served with a delicious grilled salmon – but chicken is an option, too. This salad is a meal by itself, or it could be shared as a pre-meal salad.

The temptation to try the GIANT PRETZEL was too great to ignore. And it was everything we hoped for and more.

Creatively served on a hook with two dipping sauces – a Queso cheese dip and a Brown Sugar Mustard. Both worked beautifully with the warm pretzel bread.

As we waited for our entrees to arrive, we were introduced to two specialty drinks from the bar. First, CHERRY LIMEADE. Two magical words that make a brilliant burst of flavor that is delightful any time of day. But this adult-only version of Cherry Limeade was extra special. Made with grenadine,

crust with a drizzle of balsamic glaze…

Yeah, you just find that counting carbs no longer matters. Ah. Maz. Ing.

lime, and sprite – it also had a grown-up splash of pomegranate vodka and triple sec added for a more mature flavor.

And though we hadn’t reached dessert time yet, we also tried the CHOCOLATE MARTINI (who said chocolate has to wait for the end of the meal?!) Stoli, Kahlua, Bailey’s fresh cream, and Hershey’s syrup.

Need I say more? Let’s just say – this drink could be dangerous. Very, very dangerous.

But oh, so yummy!

Entrees began to arrive, and up first was one of Mac & Nelli’s most popular dishes – the SHRIMP & GRITS. It’s a favorite for good reasons. It’s creamy, a great portion size, buttery, and full of fresh shrimp! For the Southern seafood lover – it’s all that’s right and good in the world. Except it’s in a bowl.

I discovered a new favorite with CHICKEN PICCATA. I don’t order chicken at restaurants

very often (I don’t know why), but when I sample a dish like this, I know I’ll be ordering it again. The chicken breast is butterflied and panko crusted before being cooked to tender perfection. It’s served over a bed of pasta which is tossed with sautéed spinach. The sauce has a lemony accent that perfectly complements the chicken — an excellent choice.

Y’all know I love a good burger and when the THREE CHEESE BACON BURGER arrived – I was ready for something good. And oh, yes. Let’s talk about a melted, gooey blend of cheddar, American, and Swiss cheeses and the bacon crossed on the top – well, if X marks the spot, here you go. The Three Cheese Bacon Burger arrived with a side of French Fries. A classic.

It’s never a Rosey’s Review without dessert! We tried three. First – a NY STYLE CHEESECAKE WITH FRESH STRAWBERRIES.

It’s really hard to beat a creamy serving of traditional cheesecake goodness. But the TURTLE CHEESECAKE was a strong contender.

The mix of chocolate and caramel with cheesecake and graham cracker crust?

This is the dessert you break your diet for.

We wrapped up our meal with a COOKIE SKILLET. And I have to admit it – it was my favorite. We almost ended up in a spoon war of epic proportions as my dinner mates and I all dived into a warm, gooey, chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream. It is designed to share, but honestly – I wouldn’t judge you if you didn’t.

That wrapped up our evening at Mac & Nelli’s! We had a wonderful time! The service was wonderful, and the food was excellent! I can’t wait to go back! Maybe I’ll see you there. If I miss you though, be sure to tell them that Rosey sent ya!

Professional athletes are at the top of their game. They train tirelessly, for most of their young lives, to be prepared to play their sport on the highest level. But it’s not always about fine-tuning the sport itself. What we often don’t think about is the rigorous total body conditioning that goes into maintaining an athlete’s body, as they grow, to increase their ability to play well. At Torque Performance and Fitness, they specialize in exactly this kind of performance training.

A VISION REALIZED

Five years ago, coaches Adam and Jessica Barber were ready for a fitness space of their own. “We needed a space where they could train athletes the right way. We had a vision of working with kids and adults to help them develop in their sport by creating a specific total body approach to their conditioning,” said Jessica. They started with 2000 square feet and five athletes. Since that time their business has grown to 150 plus athletes in a variety of sports and several major league clients representing MLB, the NFL, and Professional Rugby.

This year they have also had 11 athletes signed to division one schools so far.

CUSTOMIZED TRAINING

Because of their individualized training techniques, Torque Performance and Fitness is able to work with athletes of any sport and any age. They start training options at age seven. The experienced staff uses a scientific method behind the training they provide. This helps to keep athletes healthy in their sport by preventing injury. A customized plan is created and implemented to help the body grow in a wholesome and healthy way. They take young athletes and give them the foundation they need while keeping them fully prepared throughout their journey. The coaches use a combination of speed training, strength training and conditioning to provide constant growth. With two to four sessions weekly, they are able to get the athlete’s body ready for their sport.

Each athlete is assessed in 6-8 week intervals to define goals as they progress. They re-evaluate the athlete based on current goals of the season and long-term needs. This allows them to stay on top of how their body is progressing and tweak the training to be as effective as possible.

They provide preseason, in-season and postseason customization and nutritional programming and counseling at no additional charge. The main goal is to prepare each athlete’s body so that they can safely grow in their sport to peak levels of performance throughout the year.

CROSSFIT FOR PARENTS

The Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce (LCCC) announced the launch of the first of its Vocational Education Scholarship Awards during its November 2018 meeting. This launch, focused on high school graduates or equivalent, is designed for students with an interest in vocational fields. Recognizing the increasing need for skilled craftspeople, this scholarship program is timely.

Named in honor of the beloved son of Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce board member Brad Hunter, the Mason H. Hunter Vocational Educational Scholarship program has the full support of the Chamber. Former Chamber President John Golden shared that participation and support for the Scholarship by the board, staff, and scholarship committee is 100 percent and Chamber members are following their lead. Case in point, during the 30-second ad spots at the end of the Chamber meeting, each participant’s monies were matched for an additional contribution to the fund. In fact, the atmosphere was quite competitive and heart-warming with the intent to immediately increase the fund.

On behalf of the Chamber, John Golden presented the initial check in the amount of $12,290 to the Clemmons Community Foundation, Inc.’s President and CEO, Sandi Scannelli. Clemmons Community Foundation will administer and

have oversight of the Scholarship program. Scholarship awards will be up to $2,500 per student and will be paid directly to the recipient’s school to be used for tuition, books, and other materials required for the program of their choice.

Brad shared his family’s gratitude at this honor for Mason. “After Mason’s death, we spoke often of the concerns of young people, particularly about education.

There’s a difference between a technical education and a four-year program. Young people pursuing a vocational track are less encouraged even though there are many positive opportunities in these fields.”

The Mason H. Hunter Vocational Education Scholarship application process begins January 2019 and will be administered via the Clemmons Community Foundation.

The guidelines for 2019-2020 eligibility are highlighted, and more details can be found on the website (clemmonsfoundation.org): • Must be a graduating senior, equivalent, or have graduated within the year from West Forsyth High School and be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours of education/equivalent. Fulltime or intend to enroll fulltime post-secondary education preferred. High school graduation or equivalent required prior to payment of scholarship monies.

• Financial assistance not a requirement; however, may be used as a tiebreaker.

• Award is for an accredited twoyear or less program resulting in a degree or certification in any trade, technical, or vocational field with demonstrated career path.

• Selection will include consideration of community service, hobbies, sports, clubs, work experience, and other factors indicating community involvement.

I am finding that granite and hard surfaces, such as quartz, are the hardest part of the job as there does not seem to be as many choices as we had a few years ago - or I might say what we really want within budget. With our past several clients, we put the granite or quartz countertop on hold very early in the process. We also want the client to know that planning in advance is most important. With recent projects, a vendor called and said they dropped one of the quartz slabs we had selected after driving to Raleigh to put it on reserve months in advance. They also informed us that they did not have anymore and could not find a supplier to replace the same pattern.

Sometimes you just must regroup and find alternatives. Recently, we had two clients tell us that they don’t know how we do this every day. In other words, without a professional helping, you might get a bit frustrated.

Love of the Fireplace: Omens & Blessings A dancing fire is mesmerizing. How often have your eyes focused on the bright glow rising from a candle, a bonfire or campfire, or within the fireplace? For the love of the fire, the sound of crackling, the surprise burst of sparks, and the need to see the flames have positive effects on the body. Gazing at the light may have roots dating back to evolution, but science has proved its natural tendency to relax the muscles within the body, and decrease blood pressure levels.

For millions of years, humans have attempted to control fire. Dating back to the stone age, enjoyment of fire encouraged responsibility, social interaction, and a place of safety. There was no other important job than maintaining the flames. By the 12th century, the fireplace evolved to eliminate smoke-filled rooms by enclosing side walls, adding a smoke hood and enlarging the hearth to accommodate large logs and kettles. Beyond the most important benefit – the warmth provided – the hearth continued to be the centralized location to sit and talk.

Despite safety tools, instruments, and seasonal practices, the overpowering release of flame prevails to devastate and threaten life, home, and possession.

SUPERSTITION AND OMENS

What better way to protect the house than to use beneficial omens! In the 16th century, homes were built to feature symbolic symbols around doorways, and drawn on the mantel or concealed within fireplaces. Iron was an essential metal deemed for protection and was placed strategically around the house.

Besides these talismans, hand-drawn stars on the mantle were believed to prevent mice infestations, for instance, or to aid in health, fertility, and longevity of life.

In the 19th century, objects were concealed within the chimney, floorboards, and walls of the home to ward against evil spirits or threats to the house, its inhabitants and livestock.

Iron, placed on the hearth, defined a defense against misfortune.

On the other hand, watch for favorable omens such as: • A cat who washes its face directly in front of a burning fireplace.

• The act of a cat pointing its tail toward the flames.

• When sparks appear, the young lady of the house will receive a visit from her sweetheart.

THE BLESSING OF THE HOME

A long-standing tradition is to invite a religious or spiritual person to bless the home. The ceremony of walking through the rooms of the house voicing prayer and conducting a symbolic action provides the homeowners a feeling of great peace of mind and happiness.

• A Christian blessing may include holy water spirited in rooms and mirrors.

• In Jewish households, bread and salt are the first items to enter the home. Jewish and Muslim customs both gather family and friends to enjoy a meal and read aloud selections from their holy book.

• The tradition for Hindu individuals and families is to conduct a ceremony on the morning of moving day. Rice, mango leaves, coins, herbs and spices, and fruit and flowers are symbolically used to evoke the blessing from the Hindu gods.

Consider blessing your home at the beginning of the new year. A well-chosen prayer can be as simple as the Celtic blessing, which states, “My fortress, the sacred three, my fortress be, encircling me. Come and be round my hearth and my home.” Lighting candles is a ceremonial process to petition our heart and purpose.

FIREPLACE SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS

Fireplaces are a favored amenity many homeowners and buyers desire when searching for the ideal home. The comfort in having a traditional open hearth, enclosed or inserted fireplace is personal. Wood stoves, which typically give off a dry heat, led the way to kettles or steamers. Water vapor added moisture to the air, improving the tendency for dry skin and cracked lips, as well as other living things such as houseplants. (Make sure your kettle is cleaned frequently and contains high levels of water.)

While rituals and blessings are an added comfort for any new homeowner, one of the most useful preventions against misfortune is to have a professional inspect and clean the fireplace and chimney annually. Hazards are preventable with proactive measures to ensure your love of the dancing flame and warmth continues!

Back to Basics 101

It was not a kind year for investors in 2018.

Stocks have fluctuated wildly, bonds have not delivered the returns we have been used to, and there is no shortage of headlines that will keep us guessing and worrying about the next “shoe” to drop. There is enough empirical evidence out there to make any case you want to about whatever direction you think things are heading.

The fact is, no one knows what will happen tomorrow, let alone next month, or next year.

If someone claims to know, run and don’t look back. No one can see into the future.

In lieu of that omnipresent, all-knowing scenario, stick to the basics and focus on the same things you have always focused on. If you are an investor, overweight quality. If you have debt, continue to pay it down. If you are in over your head in anything you think is not good for you long term, get out. Our team at Marzano Capital Group feels cautiously optimistic about the prospects of the markets, both stocks and bonds, as we begin the new year. How you prepare and position your finances is up to you.

Our advice for clients right now is to be realistic about your expectations. Do not think that just because things go up over a long period that they will continue to do so every year. A pause and/or a sideways movement, especially in stocks, is not always a bad thing. If you are young, embrace it. If you haven’t really started investing and you see shares of companies that you like that are lower priced now than they were, consider that as an opportunity to buy.

Use this next year as a year to get things in order.

If you don’t have a will and powers of attorney, get them. If you said you wanted life insurance, but you haven’t applied, do it. If you are retiring soon and you are nervous about how well you have prepared, it probably means you do not have a plan in place, and you need to establish one and stick to it. Do not let the headlines and fear mongers of the news outlets paralyze you.

And finally, to paraphrase, as the intelligent author Stephen Covey once wrote, don’t spend your time focusing on the things you cannot control and start focusing your energy on the things you can. OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN The holidays have come and gone but one thing that didn’t go out with the old year was the weight gained over the holidays. Before you get too down on yourself, let’s look at some actual facts regarding weight gain and the holiday season. The estimate of how much the average person gains over the holidays varies. The general estimate of 5-10 pounds is somewhat exaggerated. When the new year rolls around, and we give ourselves a selfexam, we are generally more hard on ourselves than the truth would apply.

Modern-day research has the average weight gain between 2-4 pounds over the holiday season. This type of gain could happen at any time of the year… vacations, high-stress events, etc. but we all have a tendency to know exactly where we stand when the new year begins.

So now that the damage has been done, how do we start getting back on track? It might help to really understand why the holidays create such a flurry of overeating. Social functions and parties are common occurrences over the holidays. Whether it’s church, work, friends or family gatherings, food and alcohol consumption is a high priority at most events. It is only natural for the cook to want their plate to be the first to be emptied. This means preparing our most liked dishes as opposed to our healthiest dishes.

This is also true for our workplace where daily treats and snacks seem to suddenly appear during the holidays.

also plays its role because less time means more stops at fast food restaurants for meals that are generally not a part of our normal routine.

So now that we’ve done it again, what can we do to get back on the right track? There are several things to remember before we start setting resolutions and goals that are not attainable. First off, any weight put on was not done in a week or probably not even a month’s time. A gradual increase in calories might go back as far as the leftover candy from Halloween. This type of snacking might not result in much of a weight gain, but it can be the beginning of an attitude that the holidays are here and I’m not going to be as concerned about my diet as I am the rest of the year. Expect the weight you gained to take about the same amount of time to get rid of as it did to put on. Secondly, try and make goals and resolutions that are lifestyle changes as opposed to just a set number of pounds you want to lose.

This might be starting an exercise program, eating healthier, or even getting more sleep.

The bottom line is that most of us are going to make resolutions to improve aspects of our lives we feel we need to improve. If we can realize small changes that last are much better in the long run than drastic changes that are temporary, we are on the way to a healthier, happier new year. Make this your best one!

Salemtowne is a next-generation community for older adults who want to live life to the fullest through lifestyle choices and purposeful living. “I’ve never known anyone who lives at Salemtowne who didn’t love it,” said Jim Stokes, reflecting on his decision to move to Salemtowne with his wife Carolyn. The Stokes, as well as many other reservation depositors, are very happy to see that construction has begun on The Woodlands, which will consist of 56 residences featuring six spacious designs. Nikki Burris, Director of Marketing and Sales, stated, “We are happy to see all the Carolina red mud being turned over and can’t wait to see all the choices our depositors are making at designing their new homes.”

The Woodlands consists of two four-story buildings that will feature one- and two-bedroom villas ranging from 1,215 to 1,875 square feet, and all will include a balcony or patio. Each building will have seven residences per floor and an underground parking deck so that residents can come and go with ease, regardless of the weather. Each floor plan features an open concept model with a breakfast bar and a pantry in the kitchen, a large utility closet, a walk-in shower with a glass door and a walk-in closet in the master bedroom.

Salemtowne planned The Woodlands location beside Wachovia Village which has been a popular area of campus for years due to the convenience of its placement right beside the main buildings, which hold many campus amenities such as dining and fitness. Also, a short walk from The Woodlands will take you down to a beautiful lake full of fish ripe for the catching.

“We’re fortunate in Winston-Salem to have several great retirement communities,” said Carolyn Stokes who, along with her husband Jim, are future residents of The Woodlands. “We looked at the others but immediately knew Salemtowne was the right place for us. Then we saw The Woodlands and knew it was perfect. The layout of The Woodlands is wonderful, and the trees around it are beautiful. Plus, Salemtowne is such as welcoming place.”

Salemtowne is a continuing care retirement community, founded by the Moravians more than 45 years ago on its picturesque 120acre campus. Refresh Your Home for the New Year

As much as I like decorating for fall and Christmas, it always feels good to get our home back in order after the holidays.

Hopefully, you have packed and stored away all your seasonal decorating items until next year, but like me, you may feel your house looks stark and uninviting. Once all the holiday décor is taken down, it’s a good time to look around your home and see what is needed to decorate for the winter months.

By the time January rolls around budgets have been stretched and “use what you have” decorating is very appealing. Shopping your home is fast, simple, doesn’t require spending money and will transform a room with not only the things you already own, but things you already like.

To refresh your home after taking down holiday décor: • Gather remaining holiday décor items and pack away.

• Now it’s time to shop your home. Walk through each room and look for accessories, furniture, rugs, lamps, art, etc. that could possibly be used in another room.

• Think outside the box: a picture frame or framed mirror could become a tray, a pitcher could become a vase, a stack of books can be used to elevate a lamp or other object, a buffet can become a console for a TV or be used in a foyer or behind a sofa for lamps, an ottoman can easily be used as a coffee table or for extra seating, etc.

• Add a few green plants or pick up fresh flowers at the grocery store to add to your décor. These are relatively inexpensive, but just a little bit of nature brought inside will help you survive the winter months….I call them vitamins P and F. ……good for the eye and soothing to the soul.

Janine Berard grew up in a small northern community in Canada. Even with modern conveniences, the owners, Roger and Sandy Hester, have designed a store that brings to mind times when folks visited their local market to shop and stayed to visit for a while. The store is filled with local produce, local baked goods, and locally raised meats. Notice the emphasis on local – they’re all about supporting local farmers and vendors. “My husband and I are both native North Carolinians.

Roger loves farming and that’s where the original dream of the market originated,” explained Sandy. “We started selling produce in 2010 under a tent near our current location and bought this building when it became available. We officially opened in August of 2016. We currently have five employees and 20+ vendors.”

Customers actually get that hometown vibe the moment they step onto the front porch. There are items to keep feathered friends fed and happy, baskets to fill with flowers, and fresh seasonal produce on display.

Being Liked vs Respected

When I was in radio, I had a friend who was liked by everyone that knew her. No one had a negative thing to say about her. If you needed someone to emcee an event, you knew you could go to her. I would also emcee events but was never as busy as she was. The difference, though, was that I was paid when I worked and she wasn’t. One day, she asked me how I was able to get people to pay for my time. I told her it was simple….I told them that there was a fee. She immediately was taken aback. “I could never tell them that. What if they don’t like me anymore?”

And that was the underlying problem. There is a difference between liking someone and respecting them. She had decided her worth was in how many people liked her versus how many people respected what she had to offer.

Of course, we all want to be liked, but when being liked is the top priority, we often compromise ourselves. How many times have you found yourself wanting to speak your mind, but then held back for fear of what someone might think of you? Do you find yourself saying yes to things even when they are unreasonable? Do you often go along with what everyone else wants or says to not rock the boat? If any of these apply to you, then it’s possible you might be more concerned about being liked than respected.

The late Margaret Thatcher once said, “If you just set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing.”

As women, we are social creatures and want to be liked, but even if we aren’t, we can still be respected. Start by trying some of these tips:

Understanding the Canine Language

BY LISA S.T. DOSS The owner/pack leader, termed the alpha, and his or her canine have a strong bond. Through nonverbal communication, each can sense sorrow, happiness, and contentment. Dogs live for their owner’s love and approval. For owners, it takes time to understand stares, yips and loud barks, as well as other worrisome behaviors such as biting a paw or incessant licking. Studies have concluded dogs stimulate oxytocin, the same hormone which bonds a mother and child. It occurs with soft-spoken words, eye-contact, facial expressions, and gentle strokes over the head or ears. How often has a four-legged friend sat down in front of you and stretched out a paw? The request is simple; touching is synonymous with happiness and love.

CONNECTING WITH THE PACK

Particular clues can tell the pack leader aspects of a dog’s health and character.

A dog who may occasionally lean against your leg, back, or feet is giving you a sign of affection. Although she may be nervous, her owner is viewed as a trusted protector.

Are you fighting with a dog who wants to sleep with you? This is the ultimate display of love and trust. Imitating the act of gathering in a den, it is natural to sleep with her pack. If she is separated from the pack all day, it is a form of comfort to be close to family.

SLEEP POSITIONS

Similar to humans, a canine’s sleep position reveals levels of happiness and health. A fiercely loyal and happy dog may sleep on her side. It says she is content with her surroundings and has trust in her pack.

• Lying stretched out and flat is an indication of excellent health and a means to reduce body temperature.

• Lying flat but curled may prove your dog has stiff muscles and cannot easily relax.

• A tightly curled position conveys a need for protection against predators or chill.

• Paws in the air is a pose of trust, relaxation, or a need to be cool.

SNEEZING

New smells, like perfumes, cleaning products, or pollen may result in an upper airway irritation. The outcome is a sneeze.

Owners must be aware of heavy amounts of discharge or blood; it could be an indication of more significant problems such as an allergy or infection.

BITING PAWS OR EXCESSIVE LICKING

The instinctive action to take care of a hurt is through touch. Dogs use their teeth to dislodge items such as burrs, pebbles, or ticks, and when the skin aches, the response is licking. Over time and with persistent attention, the area may show redness or swelling.

Your four-legged friend may limp, protect the paw, or cry when touched. Excessive licking on the belly, for instance, may be a symptom of seasonal changes, such as excessive dry skin, termed dermatitis, or a food allergy. Simple solutions are to launder bedding and bathe using a medicated shampoo.

For any worrisome situation or if you have questions, please contact your vet.

Tip: Plastic can result in allergic reactions; therefore, choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls and hard rubber toys.

Clean often!

EAR INFECTIONS

If your dog is tilting or intentionally shaking her head, unable to walk straight, or scratching her ears, these may be symptoms of an ear infection. Sensitive to touch, your dog may fear gentle touches. A calm voice while investigating the ear may reveal a sweet odor, redness, swelling, crusts or scabs, or a brown or reddish discharge. Whether the infection is due to dirt or water, ear mites, bacteria or a hormone imbalance, a veterinarian will prescribe drops to resolve the suffering.

Tip: Never use Q-tips to remove dirt. Bacteria or dirt can be dislodged and travel further down the ear canal.

A DRY NOSE

Not all dogs have wet noses.

Without the ability of a dog’s licks, the nose may become dry as she sleeps. Hydration is another critical factor. Ensure the family dog has every opportunity to drink from a clean source inside and outdoors. Avoid

placing her favorite pillow near heating vents or out in direct sunlight, as both can result in a dry nose, bumps and cracks, discoloration, and even cracking. Try a small dab of coconut oil for a short-term solution, or a certified pet lubricant.

The pack instinct will help you pay closer attention to your dog’s needs. Watch carefully and listen for changes in her behavior and voice!

• Gua Sha is a very safe technique that aids in the movement of waste containing fluids from the body.

BY MEGAN TAYLOR Let’s be honest with ourselves – life is busy. The days are filled with work, family, errands, appointments, and more. Sometimes we become stressed and tired, especially if we spend more time caring for others and neglect caring for ourselves.

Whether it is five minutes a day or an hour a week, make it a goal this new year to add selfcare into your schedule. Some of the many self-care ideas are below. However, it is important to always choose an activity that is fun and relaxing for you.

1. EXERCISE

Take a walk, join a gym, or participate in a fun class at the Y. Being active is good for your mind, body, and spirit. Research suggests aiming for at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.

Don’t consider yourself too busy to exercise. If 30 minutes seems too much at one time, break it into smaller increments. Try 10 minutes at a time and then build up to adding 30 minutes into your daily schedule.

2. SCHEDULE A DIGITAL DETOX

We are attached to our electronic devices and rely on them most of the time. However, when we are dedicated to a screen, such as our phones or computers, we are detached from those around us and from ourselves. Make it a priority to devote an hour or two per day to place your devices in a different room and not to touch them. Then, try it for an afternoon or whole day during the weekend. Think about it – don’t you feel stressed out by constantly checking your emails, looking at social media profiles of others, comparing your life to theirs? The more time you spend away from your device, the more time you’ll feel relaxed and more confident in your own life.

3. DEVELOP A NEW HOBBY JUST FOR YOURSELF

One of the main things in self-care is making sure you are putting yourself first. It isn’t a time to feel guilty that you aren’t taking care of others or indulging in something you normally won’t do. It is a time to better yourself, so you can be a better person for your loved ones. A way to do just that is by developing a new hobby or restarting one that you had given up, one that is just for yourself. Maybe it is reading a book each night, sewing, coloring in a coloring book, or listening to a podcast. A hobby should be something you enjoy and want to do in your “me time.”

4. DECLUTTER

For me, I can get stressed out when things are all over the place and in a mess. To help with that, decluttering and cleaning up is the key. Every now and then, declutter a certain area in your home. It might be changing your wardrobe every three months and giving away pieces of clothing that you haven’t worn in a long time. Or you could use five minutes of each day to tidy up a corner of a room until it is done. When things are in place, our minds are calm.

5. EDUCATE YOURSELF AND LEARN SOMETHING NEW If you or a loved one are dealing with an illness, major life change, etc., research the situation and learn about all the different elements of how you are able to help. Sometimes being in the know about something takes away a great deal of stress. Also, learn something to broaden your horizons. Have you always wanted to learn another language or how to do a special skill? Now is the time.

6. CHANGE THINGS UP

Take a different route to work or go to that new restaurant you have always wanted to try.

It is pivotal to have a routine, but every now and then, be spontaneous and try something new. An example could be making each Friday night the night to do something different. Do a new activity with your family and friends each week.

7. REWARD YOURSELF AFTER ACCOMPLISHING A SMALL OR DIFFICULT TASK

Overcoming all types of obstacles should be celebrated. Reward these times with a pedicure, going to a fancy store, etc.

Self-care needs to be a priority for everyone and a part of a person’s to-do list. Find something that helps you and don’t feel bad taking the time to focus on you. As mentioned above, self-care makes you a better person.

What makes one “happy?”

“Happiness,” according to the MerriamWebster Dictionary definition, is “a state of well-being and contentment.” While the dictionary offers a simple and easy explanation of what this feeling is, how to obtain this feeling is a lifelong quest for many. There are countless complex reasons for why someone could feel “happiness.” While what makes one happy may vary from person to person, there is more behind the psychology of this feeling.

According to the article, “What makes you happy…really?” from Psychology Today, happiness is an emotion that can be incredibly complex. “From a psychological point of view, a state of happiness arises from the complex interaction among your biology, biography (history and culture), and physiological sensations.” In laymen’s terms, the experience of positive emotions— like elation, relief, and bliss—is a result of specific circumstances in life. Many of these circumstances occur early in life, such as a newborn enjoying their feeding.

The affect theorist, Silvan Tomkins, stated that only two of nine basic affects are involved in creating the emotions that lead to happiness— enjoyment/joy and interest/excitement. One may view a smile to be a result of enjoyment/ joy. This is true, yet the reason that led up to the smile could stem from a variety of factors. One could consciously smile as a result of unconscious memories of previous experiences; this would be the case with an infant viewing her mother/ father. Another could smile in anticipation of experiencing something pleasant, such as spending time with loved ones. All this said this, “enjoyment/joy” and “interest/excitement” affects are the groundwork on which human relationships are based.

Another theory is that specific individuals are predisposed to being “happy,” based on their own biological background. In the latest issue of the journal Nature Genetics, molecular biologist Dean Hamer of the National Cancer Institute reviews studies suggesting that “one’s baseline level of happiness – the very small range within which one’s happiness level fluctuates – is “largely a matter of heredity.’’

Understanding the psychology behind happiness is vital, however, what many want is how exactly to obtain this feeling of euphoria. It is true that one can scour for hours through the self-help section of a bookstore for books dedicated to helping one feel “happy.” While the verdict is still out on whether or not these “remedies” really work, what one can do is look at the daily habits of these “happy people.” Read on for the top five habits of these content individuals.

Happiness Habit #1: Appreciate close relationships: Individuals who have at least one or more close relationships, are able to feel joy more than those who do not have this. The old adage, “quality over quantity,” absolutely applies here. People do not need a “wide social network” to feel this bliss. What seems to matter is the ability to make these connections and offer each other support and love.

Happiness Habit #2: Delight in physical well-being: It is true that those who are regularly physically active enjoy improved mental well-being. According to “The Cochrane Review,” exercise has a “large clinical impact” on depression. The endorphins produced when one is physically active can help improve one’s mental health and lower the chance of depression.

Happiness Habit #3: Cultivate kindness: People who volunteer and give back to the community on a regular basis often seem to be happier and feel more satisfaction. The joy that comes from knowing that one is helping another’s life improve can have a lasting positive effect on that person’s mindset. While volunteering is the most common, those who simply help others—like helping a troubled colleague—can reap the same satisfaction.

Happiness Habit #4: Engage in Spirituality: This does not mean one has to become overly religious. It is simply proven that there is a close link to spiritual and religious practices and happiness. Prayer and spirituality offer individuals an opportunity to engage in a meditative act. Meditation itself has a strong calming effect on the body by reducing stress and anxiety.

Happiness Habit #5: Employ hobbies: Whether it is cooking, or watercolor painting, being able to enjoy some type of interest/hobby will enhance one’s well-being. Numerous studies reveal that the “happiest people,” are those who have discovered and utilize their own strengths.

Campaign Inches Closer To $3.75-Million Goal

BY FAMILY SERVICES Since the public launch of the Raising Every Child capital campaign just four months ago, contributions from businesses foundations, and private donors have propelled campaign support past $3.4 million.

“WHEN YOU ARE BORN INTO POVERTY, IT DOESN’T MAKE YOU LESS GIFTED; IT ONLY GIVES YOU FEWER OPTIONS – AND MORE OBSTACLES.“

Family Services is working with a campaign leadership team of community volunteers to raise $3.75 million to expand programs that will annually help 1,500 of our most vulnerable population, children from birth to age 5.

We want to remove those obstacles so that every child in this community has the opportunity to use their gifts and grow in their own way to support themselves and their futures,” adds Peggy Reingold.

At the time of the public launch, the campaign had raised 75% of its goal thanks to support from foundations, including the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, the Winston-Salem Foundation, the Cannon Foundation, the James G. Hanes Memorial Fund, and the R. J. Reynolds II and Marie M. Reynolds Foundation; local businesses, including BB&T, Wells Fargo, Truliant, Novant Health, Davie Construction, Quality Oil, and Hanesbrands; the City of Winston-Salem, and Forsyth County; and almost $1 million from private donors, including several family foundations.

Recent gifts from private donors, Reynolds American International, and Forsyth County have moved the needle to 93% of the goal – closer to addressing the opportunity gap and helping more children have the start they need to succeed in school and life.

“The need is great in our community. Too many of our children who enter kindergarten in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools are at risk of falling behind, particularly in reading, from the first day they start school. In addition, a 2017 Harvard University study ranked Forsyth County one of the worst counties in the United States in helping poor children up the income ladder,” says William B. Reingold, retired Chief District Court Judge and co-chair of the Raising Every Child campaign with Peggy Reingold, Community Relations Consultant at Wells Fargo.

“THESE CHILDREN ARE NO LESS PRECIOUS, AND WE DON’T SEE THEM AS VICTIMS. THEY ARE JUST UNDERRESOURCED,” SHE SAYS. Studies show that young children – especially children who are disadvantaged due to living in persistent poverty – can benefit from high quality early childhood development programs.

“However, too many children remain stranded on the far side of opportunities that can help them,” says Bill Reingold. Current Family Services programs are working and improving those numbers, yet limited public funding is not meeting the needs of all preschoolers who are eligible.

“That’s why we are honored to lead the Raising Every Child capital campaign and work with volunteers and the community to expand, collaborate and impact more children and their families than ever before,” the Reingolds add.

Family Services is now asking the community to provide the remaining support, ensuring that more children have access to resources during the first five years – that once-only window of opportunity when a child’s mind becomes wired for success (or hardship) that will last into adulthood.

The Right Time to

Discard Important Documents

Most people have moments when they come across a paycheck stub, bank statement, etc., and think to themselves, “Do I really need to keep this?” The answers vary based on the type of document. However, many people don’t know exactly when to throw them away (or shred). To help ease the confusion, I’ve got your answers below on discarding important documents 101.

• Receipts should be kept for three years for any items that you need to itemize for your tax returns. Keep them with your tax documents.

• Paycheck stubs have a lifespan of one year. Hang onto them until the end of the year to compare them with your W-2 and social security statements. Then, you can get rid of them.

• Medical bills vary depending on your insurance. Receipts for expenses can be kept for one year unless your insurance company needs proof or verification of visits and claims.

Your insurance may request bills for hospital visits, doctor’s appointments, etc., to be shown at certain times. Think about the type of care you received or the type of expense to determine whether or not you should keep them. Avoid discarding these expenses for up to three years. If medical expenses total more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income, you can deduct them on your taxes. Keep these for three years with your tax records.

• Bank and credit card statements need to be filed away for up to three years. The reason for holding onto bank statements is in case you are audited by the IRS. However, the three-year rule is a little different for your credit cards. If you have confirmed your charges and had proof of payment, then you can shred them.

If you are using your credit card statements for tax deductions, hang on to them. Getting too much paper? Switch to online documents. Just remember to write a note, so you’ll know they are online when you go to retrieve them.

• Utility bills can be scrapped after one year. The exception is if you are claiming a home office tax deduction. Then, our good three-year rule comes into play.

• If you have records of loans that have been paid off, don’t get rid of them until it has been seven years. If you are still paying off a loan, store all records and statements together until you have paid it off and it has been seven years.

• Tax returns also go by the three-year recommendation. The returns can be trashed after three years from the date you filed the original return. Hold onto the returns for seven years if you file a claim.

• Investment and real estate records need to be handy for at least three years for audit reasons. In addition, you will be able to see how much taxes you owe when you sell the stocks or property.

Monthly statements can be tossed when you have received your annual summaries.

• Any contracts, insurance documents, stock certificates, or property records that are active need to be held in a safe place. Only discard once the contracts are completed, and policies expired.

• There is never a lifespan on documents, such as marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, wills, adoption papers, and paid mortgages. These documents should always be kept and passed down between the generations.

The rule of thumb is to keep most important documents for at least three years. There are exceptions to the rule. But if you are in doubt about something, it is always good to hang onto it no matter how long. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Easy Meals

to Make Around the Fire That Aren’t From a Can

There are few things more enjoyable than relaxing outside around a fire with friends and family. The crackling sounds of the wood, the breeze blowing through your hair, and the unmistakable smell of a campfire filling your nostrils sounds like the definition of perfection to many of us. Being able to prepare and then eat a full meal right in your fire, whether at a campsite or a fire pit in your backyard, can make for the start of a perfect night. Here are a few recipes that are not only delicious, but also surprisingly easy to make.

BREAKFAST CASSEROLE

SALMON VEGGIE FOIL PACKETS

CAST IRON DUTCH OVEN MAC & CHEESE

INGREDIENTS: • ½ lb. Bacon - Chopped • 6 Eggs • ½ Onion - Chopped • 1 Potato - Chopped • ½ Green Pepper - Chopped • 1 Garlic Clove – Minced • 1/8 Cup Milk • ½ Cup Shredded Cheese of your Choice • Salt and pepper to taste

INGREDIENTS: • Salmon Filets • Asparagus • Carrots - Julienned • Olive Oil • Salt/Pepper to Taste • Drizzle of Honey

INGREDIENTS: • 1 lb. Pasta of your Choice (Pre-Cook Al Dente) • ¼ Cup Butter • 2 Tbsp. Flour • 2 Cups Milk • 2 – 2 ½ Cups Cheese of your Choice • Spices to Taste • ½ Cup Breadcrumbs

In a separate bowl whisk together the eggs and milk, adding the salt and pepper, and set aside for later. Set your cast iron Dutch oven on top of the fire pit grill and cook up the chopped bacon until soft and then add the onion, potatoes and green pepper. When the onion is translucent, add the chopped garlic. Cook up the garlic in the mixture for about 60 seconds then add the egg mixture. Move the logs around in your fire to disrupt the flames and set your Dutch oven in the coals with the lid on for about 20-30 minutes, until the egg mixture is cooked through. Add your cheese on the top and replace the lid until it melts, around 2-5 minutes depending on the temperature of your coals and the type of cheese. Allow to cool for 3-5 minutes before serving.

Lay out a rectangle of aluminum foil for each serving and rub a small layer of olive oil on the middle section. Place your salmon fillet in the middle and then place the vegetables of choice on there.

Suggested are asparagus and carrots, but there is some wiggle room here based on your personal preference. Try to have at least two different types of vegetables to give a depth in your taste.

Drizzle some olive oil and honey on top of the vegetables and salmon and top off with a touch of salt and pepper. Fold the aluminum foil up and place it in the coals of the fire, noting there should be no flames coming up out of the fire. Cook for around 10-20 minutes until the salmon flakes to show it is done. Cook time will depend on the thickness of your fillet and the heat of your fire, so keep an eye on it to prevent dry salmon.

Setting your Dutch oven above your fire on a grill top, melt down the butter and make a roux by adding the flour gradually to the melted butter and whisking. Gradually add in the milk and cheese to create the cheese sauce. This sounds more complicated than it is, and it gets so much easier every time you do it - because you needed more reasons to make mac and cheese right?

When the cheese sauce has a good consistency, add in whatever spices you want to add. Salt and pepper are always solid choices, and a dash of hot sauce with a pinch of nutmeg has a surprisingly tasty undertone. When you mix in your pasta, move the logs around in the fire to transition it from a high fire to mostly coals. Throw some breadcrumbs on the top, slap on that lid and then place the whole thing in the coals for about 20 minutes, and let cool for 5 minutes before eating.

Get Going on Your Goals!

Start your year off right.

ACTIVATE YOUR INNER MUSE

When it comes to goals, who said you have just stick to pen and paper? Activate the creative part of your brain and your inner muse. Sketch or draw from the heart with pencil, colored pencils, charcoal or markers. Create your vision board with photos and magazine cutouts. Those visuals can be helpful in the goal-setting process. Do some avid brainstorming and record your thoughts on paper or on an electronic device.

You’ll work best to achieve your goals when they are aligned with your purpose, so reflect on what makes you the happiest, where you want to be and what you want to be doing. Envision yourself being productive and successful. Narrow your focus to what is most meaningful. Keep a clear picture in mind of what fulfills you the most and why you want to be triumphant in accomplishing these goals.

Plot out what you envision your goals to be, then narrow them down. Make them more practical and straightforward. Make sure they are attainable, specific, and measurable. If the goals are too high in the sky, bring them back down to earth. Make sure stages of accomplishment can be measured. Make them doable, and determine a time frame that makes sense.

WRITE IT DOWN: MAKE IT STICK

Why write your goals down?

Because it works! Science confirms that you will remember things better when you write them down. Once written, review the goals often to get inspired, set your intentions and encourage your internal motivation to steer you forward.

Post your goals where you’ll see them every day. Review them, stay focused, and re-commit to them every day.

BABY STEPS AND BITE-SIZED PIECES

Work on the goals daily and break them down into bite-sized pieces.

A specific action plan is important. The night before, make your next day’s to-do list, listing tasks from the most important all the way down to the smallest tasks that simply must be done. In the morning, most people are happy to cross off the small stuff first, but the

better plan might be to tackle the one big thing that will move you closer to your goal before doing anything else.

GET IN THE HABIT

Are your goals aligned with your habits?

Your habits, whether good or bad, healthy or unhealthy, can make or break your productivity and success. Develop habits that will help you. Establish a routine with consistency, diligence, hard work and passion to drive you forward. Practice makes perfect.

Doors will open. Opportunities will emerge. In due time, you will reap an abundant harvest.

TOMORROW IS YOUR FUTURE

Staying committed to your destiny and living out your purpose in the present moment is an investment in what is to come. It takes perseverance to make this work. Select a time frame for each goal and determine when you want it completed. Prioritize your goals.

Know which ones are the most important and consider tackling the ones at the top of your list first.

GET ACCOUNTABLE

Consider having an accountability partner – maybe even more than one. Having someone you know and trust can give you a muchneeded boost and can help you stay focused, attentive and committed to achieving your goals. Discussing your goals regularly can keep them from sliding off the radar screen to the backburner. An accountability partner can help you to stay fixed on aiming for success.

PRAISE AND REWARDS

Try positive reinforcement and incorporate a self-reward system so you will be encouraged to work hard and stay accountable. Praise and treat yourself when you take a step forward to meeting your goals. Whether it’s a luxurious massage (at a spa or DIY), an adventuresome movie night (at home or at a movie theatre), or a special meal (at home or out), find little and big ways of rewarding your progress to help you stay motivated on the track of commitment.

Take action! Feel good about your goals and work on them proactively. Even a little bit of progress is still progress, and every little bit of progress really adds up over time.

Share your goals with others and make them an active part of your life. Stay focused on where you want to be headed, then take baby steps, bigger steps, and even leaps of faith in the direction of your dreams.

Don’t Be a Bystander!

Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? ~1 Peter 3:13 You’re shopping alone in a crowded grocery store, and suddenly you spot a small child who appears to be lost and wandering for its parents. Do you take the active role, take the child by the hand and help find the parents? Or do you continue with your shopping while thinking, “Hopefully, the parents will find their missing child,” or “There’s a lot of people here, maybe someone else will help find the parents.” If you tend to only look at a seemingly urgent situation, thinking that someone else will assume responsibility and act, you may suffer with the bystander effect.

WHAT IS THE ‘BYSTANDER EFFECT?”

This is a social phenomenon that occurs when the more people that are present during a crisis, the less likely any of the people will help the distressed victim. When a desperate situation breaks out in public—someone becoming dehydrated and feeling faint, a small child in pain, a blind person who is lost—we quickly put the hope in others to help that person. Sadly, it has become a social norm to only look at situations because we just don’t consider being that radical hero to save the victim’s day. It just doesn’t seem like something that the “cool kids” do. This happens mainly when the situation takes place in the presence of a large crowd. The enclosing crowd puts less pressure on individuals to take responsibility and help.

“AWWW… WELL, SOMEONE ELSE CAN ALWAYS HELP…”

Many reasons encircle a person’s head as to why they “cannot” or “shouldn’t” help the victim. The first reason is the “diffusion of responsibility,” which happens when people are less likely to act when in the presence of a large crowd of people. In situations like these, the lack of urgency that we reads on onlookers’ faces and their body language makes us think the situation is not that serious, making us guilty of being a bystander. Even if we think about helping the victim, we may think that we don’t have the resources to help.

Social norms are another reason that the bystander effect occurs. When a crisis breaks out in public, sadly, people only stand and watch. It’s like driving past a car accident and slowing down traffic because everyone wants to see what happened and if the person is alive. But most drivers just keep pushing forward along their route and don’t stop by to help. In today’s culture, crises are a subject for social media entertainment. This should not be the case because it desensitizes people to others’ misfortunes and strips their desire to help and rectify the situation.

WHAT IF IT WAS YOU?

One way of diminishing the bystander effect is to either remember a time where you were in desperate need of a stranger’s help or to imagine if you were in the victim’s place. Would you want someone to promptly stop in their tracks and show compassion and help you in dire need? Do you think your situation will worsen if everyone just passed you by without even making eye contact?

FINDING THE COURAGE TO CARE

I wanted to marry Biblical principles with my prescription to diminish the bystander effect:

• Love. When we have genuine, unshakeable

love for others, we naturally show that love.

We don’t just say, “I love you.” This love involves helping others in need, whether a friend, family member or stranger. We are required to love in action. We must also be watchful and be courageous enough to stand out from the crowd and be the radical helper the victim needs. If we don’t help, who else will? (1 John 3:18, 1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

• Responsibility. We are responsible for

helping each other in our times of need. If we know the right thing to do and still don’t do it, we fall guilty of being a bystander. We must not get tired of doing good.

(Galatians 6:9-10)

• Nonconformity. We should not worry about following the crowd. The broad way is the danger zone. (Romans 12:2) Don’t fall into the trap of the bystander effect.

The world has enough bystanders, but a shortage of radical helpers.

The National Center for Victims of Crime launched National Stalking Awareness Month in 2004, and community members across the globe have acknowledged it ever since. The idea is to raise awareness and create multidisciplinary responses to crime so we have better outcomes.

The stalker is essentially a criminal trying to exert control and power. When you familiarize yourself with the laws and follow your gut, you will be able to stay safer.

In North Carolina stalking includes harassment. “The biggest thing is that stalking is something that is unwanted or something that would be considered abnormal, like someone paying way too much attention to your whereabouts or comings and goings and you are either not okay with that, or do not know they are doing it up front,” said Kim Palmer, community outreach and engagement coordinator at Family Services, Inc. in Winston-Salem. The state law specified examples of stalking such as someone continuing to call you after you have asked them to stop, leaving obscene messages, driving by your home or workplace and intimidating you, or damaging or threatening to damage your property. Our state also has a law dedicated to cyberstalking, which refers to threatening, malicious behaviors online.

While stranger danger is a reality, it does not always apply to stalking. “Most of the time the stalker is someone they know or at least someone they have encountered in some setting,” said Palmer. This does not change the fact that the behavior is inappropriate and bad. “It can happen to anyone just like all sorts of family violence and abuse,” said Palmer. If you feel you may be stalked, the best thing you can do is speak up. “If you have more people trying to be aware, you have more of a chance of noticing odd behaviors,” said Palmer.

There are things you can do to minimize your risk such as using the buddy system and parking in well-lit areas near your destination. You may feel comfortable in a routine, but it is wise to switch things up from time to time. “Change up your behavior because stalking individuals are simply picking up on regular behaviors to know where you are,” said Palmer. This can be as basic as changing a time you typically leave your house or driving a different route to go somewhere. If you or someone you know has been victimized, do not assign blame. “Sometimes you can put the best plan in action and things still occur, but if you are proactive about your safety, it definitely minimizes the chances of those types of encounters,” said Palmer.

Stalkers should be reported. “If someone feels they are not safe, they need to reach out, file a report and take advantage of the community resources because stalking is against the law,” said Palmer. The appropriate course of action may be situation-dependent. “For an intimate partner you would need to put into place legal paperwork, whether it be a restraining order, filing criminal charges, reaching out to law enforcement community, letting those around you know what is going on and even having a safety word with a family member or coworker so if you say it they know to call the police,” said Palmer. Having a safety plan in place is key.

“We tell a lot of clients in domestic violence situations which could coincide with stalking to have a safety plan, clothing put aside and copies of important documents that are stored at another location,” said Palmer.

We can hope that raising awareness on stalking will make a difference here in Forsyth County. “The key to substantially decreasing these incidents involves community education, collaborating with nonprofits and agencies, so there is education out there,” said Palmer.

The community makes it clear that stalking is not tolerated. Whether it is emotional, physical or financial abuse, if you or someone you know is in a stalking situation, seek help and get into a safe environment without delay.

So, get ready to take notes and add a few more New Year’s resolutions to your list with these three daily habits to adopt into your work day!

#1 THAT THING YOU WANT TO PUT OFF - DO IT FIRST

You know your strengths especially when it comes to your business. There are things to do every day that don’t make you think twice because you are naturally good at them and enjoy the task. There are, however, the things that we seem to always put off until the end.

Typically, these are the ones that either play to our weaknesses or we just don’t enjoy doing. This is one of the most difficult habits to integrate into your day, but it also has the biggest impact! Move that dreaded task to the very start of your day and get it over with first! It will be out of the way, and that feeling that weighs you down and hinders the rest of your productivity will be gone. You’ll be so glad you did this as you work through the rest of the day.

#2 SPEND SOME TIME UNPLUGGED- ON PURPOSE

Can you believe there was a time where people were business owners without things like smartphones, iPads or laptops? I know!

Most of the day you probably have your phone within arm’s reach, and you are not alone. While these devices are magical little inventions that allow us to create content, perform sales, engage customers and so many other wonderful things, they can also

be a distraction. Taking some intentional time every day to unplug and leave your devices alone and out of reach will give you some much needed personal time away from work.

Even when used for your personal life, it’s healthy to unplug and take a walk, have a great conversation with a friend or enjoy some “you” time reading a book. In the end, you’ll be more productive because of breaks like this.

#3 DON’T JUST SET GOALS, PICK YOUR BIG THREE

If I’ve learned anything about all of the to-do lists I create, it’s that there’s no way to really ever get it all done! Why? Because they are never ending! Projects and tasks of small business owners continue to evolve and add

up throughout the week, making it pretty difficult to feel accomplished some days. Do yourself a favor and spend a little time at the start of every day picking your top three goals!

Sure there are tons of things to get done, but choose three things that absolutely must be completed before the end of the day. This will help you to have more focus while you work and end each day feeling more on top of your game knowing you checked off your three most important tasks.

Remember, it takes 21 days to develop a habit!

Start by adding one of these changes to your day and see how it feels. As it gets easier, add one more in and keep going from there. Have fun seeing what changes you notice in your productivity and your mindset as you work!

Help Your Feathered Friends Survive the Winter Weather

December’s icy cold winds blow, and snowflakes fall as temperatures drop. Winter weather can be severe, and birds in your yard may be struggling for survival. We may be fortunate to have a place to live, but your local birds may need extra care from helping hands to stay alive.

HOW BIRDS ARE BUILT

Birds are built to stay warm and conserve energy in winter. Some grow additional feathers as temperatures drop, which increases their insulation. Some birds fluff their feathers up, which traps body heat.

Some species of birds can lower their metabolic rate, slowing their heart rate down and burning fewer calories to help survive the coldest nights. Wet feathers are hazardous to a bird’s health, and birds stay dry because of the glands that coat their feathers in oil as they preen themselves. Preening creates air pockets that trap body heat to insulate and keep them warm.

HOME IS WHERE THE WARMTH IS

Nesting boxes can be left up year round. Birds can raise their young in the summer and later take shelter from harsh winter elements. And, of course, every home needs some furnishings to make it cozy and comfortable. What would a bird roosting in a nest box on a cold winter’s night prefer to nestle in? Wood shavings or dried grass are some natural materials to fill birdhouses, but be sure that they’re dry. Sawdust isn’t recommended because, when wet, it retains moisture.

Other alternative abodes for birds include shrubs, evergreen trees and brush piles of fallen leaves and dead branches. Rake a pile of leaves, sticks, and branches into a corner in your yard for a makeshift shelter for your feathered friends, and also to provide a home for hibernating amphibians, reptiles and insects. Make “birdie hotels” by stuffing grasses, cotton and other materials in leftover hanging planters.

FINDING FOOD, FEEDERS, AND FORAGING

Keep bird food accessible and dry in tube or hopper feeders, and reach ground-feeders by scattering seed for birds like sparrows, juncos, doves and towhees.

Scatter peanut bits, mixed seed and black-oil sunflower seeds in your hedges and bushes and along the edge of your garden or wooded area. To attract a wide variety of birds, provide different types of feeders, such as a suet feeder, peanut feeder, and a satellite feeder for smaller birds.

Putting out high-energy, high-fat foods will boost your winter birds’ energy. Set out peanut butter and suet.

Make your own DIY suet feeder from a mesh onion bag – smear it with peanut butter, fill the bag with peanuts, and then suspend the bag from a tree branch or bird feeder pole.

BIRDSEED CAKE RECIPE: Melt 2 cups suet in a saucepan over low heat, then mix in 1 cup quick oats, ½ cup shelled sunflower seeds and ¼ cup each of chopped peanuts, raisins, currants or berries as desired. Store in the freezer until solid, then place in suet feeder when the temperature is colder than 50 degrees.

HELP THEM KEEP HYDRATED

Water is essential for birds and dehydration can be a bigger threat than starvation. When temperatures drop below freezing and water turns to ice, provide your feathered friends with fresh water. A heated birdbath is ideal, but if you don’t have that, simply put out a shallow dish of warm water at the same time every day and your birds will grow accustomed to that daily schedule.

FIND WAYS TO HELP YOUR BIRDS SURVIVE AND THRIVE

There are lots of creative, inexpensive or even costfree ways to help our fine feathered friends survive the winter. When it comes to food, water, and shelter, human friends can help them cope in even the harshest and most severe conditions. Birds will fare much better if you provide them with adequate food, water, and shelter, which are often in short supply in the winter.

When the landscape is covered in snow, birds stand out against the stark white. Stay warm inside the comfort of your own home and enjoy watching your well-nourished birds flourish.

There are some people who always seem to nail every recipe. For me, The Pioneer Woman (Ree Drummond) is one of those people.

From her cooking show on The Food Network to her acclaimed food blog, every recipe I make seems to immediately make its way into my rotation of repeated recipes.

In this season of life, many weeknight dinners are often pre-prepared casseroles that I make on Sunday evenings. As I have scoured the internet for simple, yet yummy, recipes this way stood out amongst many. With a husband who will eat tree bark if it was covered in cheese, I knew this version of an Italian classic would be a keeper.

INGREDIENTS 20 whole jumbo pasta shells, cooked and drained 2 whole boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or a rotisserie chicken works great!)

Salt and pepper, to taste Olive oil, for grillings 3/4 cups ricotta cheese 3/4 cups cottage cheese 3/4 cups grated mozzarella cheese, plus more for the top 2 cups grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for the top 2 whole eggs 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley 2 Tablespoons minced fresh basil 4 Tablespoons butter 2 Tablespoons flour 2 cups whole milk 1 cup heavy cream, plus more, as needed 3 cloves garlic, minced

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Season the chicken breasts on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat a grill pan or iron skillet over medium heat, drizzle with olive oil, and cook the chicken on both sides until it’s done. Remove and shred with two forks and allow to cool.

In a medium bowl, combine ricotta, cottage cheese, mozzarella, 1 cup of the Parmesan, eggs, 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, salt, pepper, and chicken. Stir to combine, splashing in 2 tablespoons heavy cream if needed. Set aside.

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sprinkle over the flour. Whisk and cook until the roux turns golden brown. Pour in the milk and cream, whisking constantly, and cook for a few minutes, until thickened. Add the garlic, the additional 1 cup Parmesan, salt, pepper, 1 tablespoon minced parsley, and minced basil and stir until combined. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Set aside.

Add 1 cup sauce to the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch baking dish. Using a spoon, fill each of the jumbo shells generously with the chicken/ ricotta mixture. Lay them face down in the pan, then pour the sauce all over the top. Sprinkle on extra mozzarella and Parmesan, then bake for 25 minutes, or until bubbly and golden.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Detection Program

Congress passed the Breast and Cervical Cancer Mortality Prevention Act of 1990 which prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

Progress has been made by leaps and bounds ever since. In 2000 Congress passed the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act which permitted states with women who were diagnosed with cancer in the program to be able to access treatment through Medicaid. “The state guidelines allow us to start the services for women at age 40 and we can go up to age 75 with the state funds, while federal funds are supposed to be used for women between 50 and 64,” said Micki Metscher, nurse and navigator for the breast and cervical cancer control program at WomanWise/ WISE WOMAN Clinic.

Healthcare professionals are proud of the work this initiative has done. “The good thing is, we are able to serve a large patient population, and the criteria to get in are living in Forsyth County, being uninsured, in that age group and to income qualify,” said Metscher.

If you meet all of the criteria except you are under 40 and have a breast problem, you can still qualify. “When someone comes in, I am not sure if they are more terrified of getting cancer or the fact that they do not know how they will pay for it,” said Metscher. Women are armed with educational materials on how they can take better care of their health. “I do education about the self-breast exam, breast cancer risk factors, breast density, ask if they smoke and give information about cessation and the quit line and for those over age 50 I have to counsel them on colon cancer screening,” said Metscher.

Those who work on the program find it rewarding. “I love women’s health and have been in a unique position to make women feel cared about, important and valuable, and I want them to take care of themselves and feel good about themselves,” said Metscher.

All women should screen early and often. “I advocate to women that I do not care who you are, where you live or how old you are; if you find something in your breast that does not belong there you need to make noise, bang on doors and make phone calls because somebody will get you help,” said Metscher. If you are over 50, remember there are some things you may not be able to see or feel, so the mammogram is vital. “Most insurances will pay for an annual mammogram after 40 which is a good idea, and there is minimal radiation exposure,” said Metscher.

For cervical cancer, the Pap smear is recommended starting at age 21. “A regular cytology Pap smear can be repeated in three years, and patients 30 and older are also tested for the human papilloma virus,” said Metscher. If they are negative, it can be rechecked in

5 years. “Guidelines will be adjusted for people that have histories of abnormalities which are determined on an individual basis,” said Metscher.

There is a vaccine for cervical cancer that is highly recommended as well.

“We just want women to know that their health is important, they should take care of themselves and not be afraid to talk to somebody if they have a problem,” said Metscher. It is better to be safe than sorry. “Most of the time at 23 a breast problem is a fibroadenoma which is not a cancer,” said Metscher. Knowing your body makes a difference. “There has been controversy about them, but a man did a study a number of years back that said it did not improve outcomes for breast cancer, but I highly disagree with that,” said Metscher. The idea is to be self-aware. “I want to make sure that they put their arm up, go under their arm, cover the whole mound of the breast and the area from the top of the breast all the way up to the collarbone,” said Metscher.

The top two risk factors are being female and getting older, followed by family history.

Obesity is also problematic. “Women store estrogen in their body fat, and excess estrogen plays havoc with your uterus and breasts,” said Metscher. Try to stay away from processed foods and have a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables and is low in fat and sugar. Exercise is also beneficial for general wellness such as cardiac health and prevention of diabetes.

Since January is considered cervical cancer awareness month, it is a prime time to deliver the message on the importance of detection and screening and share with the special women in your life.

With all the positivity that is coming from this new venture of yours, we all know that when it comes to any decision we make in our personal lives, there will always be opinions from those around us. (And oh, how they will be ready and eager to make their presence known!) Of course, dieting is no different. While the decision to make changes to one’s nutrition and food intake may seem like a personal one that only involves yourself, alas, it is not.

Be prepared to navigate a variety of comments and questions during your pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.

IS THAT AN ORANGE IN YOUR PURSE?

Orange, banana, apple, cut up pineapple in a Ziploc bag – pick your poison!

When you are trying to eat right, stop cravings, or avoid that potluck spread on the break table you’ve got to be prepared.

Keeping a little snack in your purse is never a bad idea but know that wandering eyes will be keen to point out your on-the-go snack of choice.

Often someone may show shock or even concern that you’ve somehow been able to swindle a produce department inside your purse like some sort of Mary Poppins character!

Continue to pack your healthy option and let them ponder at your magic abilities.

YOU REALLY THINK ONE BITE WILL HURT YOU?

That familiar voice of sabotage, sometimes hiding under the disguise of friendship and humorous sarcasm can certainly find you at the wrong time. As someone who has survived countless birthday party and potluck encounters, let me tell you this question always gets me.

While the answer may be, “No, this singular bite of food will not bring me to my misery and defeat, Barbara,” it’s not a discussion. Sure, one bite may seem appealing, but for many who are choosing to eliminate or monitor certain food groups, it can be challenging to leave it at just one bite. Don’t let this question persuade you to do anything you weren’t planning to do while sticking to your new nutrition plan!

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU PEED TODAY?

One of the very first moves towards a healthier lifestyle that most people begin with is staying hydrated and drinking more water. While in theory consuming more water could only lead to positive benefits such as healthier skin, less toxins in the body, and increased energy, there is one additional thing you may notice. I’m talking about more bathroom breaks than usual! When you’re locating the nearest restroom as you pace the mall with friends or stepping away from co-workers during long meetings, don’t be caught off guard when asked where all those little stops are coming from. While people may try to make your business, their business (pun intended), you can educate them on the wonderful health benefits of adding more water to their routine.

DON’T YOU THINK YOU’VE BEEN DIETING LONG ENOUGH?

One thing I can almost guarantee is that your diet will feel longer to you than anyone else. After all, you’re the one making the change and living your life. As long as you’ve consulted your doctor before making a severe change in your diet and exercise routine, then you should be fine to continue on your dieting path. Sometimes people try to ask this question in place of a complimenting you; “You look wonderful, why would you need to keep dieting?”

You may also encounter the question out of insecurity on their end; “OK, you’ve proved you can do better than me and I don’t have the same discipline.” Regardless, you know your own body and health goals, so trust that you will make the decision to alter your eating choices as needed.

Go M.A.D: Make a Difference with Uplifting Music

It is debatable whether or not powerful, galvanizing song lyrics can spark a social movement or spread more positive qualities in the world. However, it is possible for an uplifting song to alter our mindset on our lives, people, and the world in which we live in a positive way. Here is a list of lyrically powerful, timeless songs that can leave such a mark on our minds and possibly help lead us to go M.A.D (make a difference):

MARVIN GAYE, “INNER CITY BLUES”

As the title suggests, Gaye speaks passionately about what’s going on in the inner-city lives of the working-class black resident. This is a timeless account of paying taxes, police brutality, increased cost of living, and struggling to make a living. This is an inspirational record because it is eye-opening to anyone who is blind to this style of living. Because of the realistic, almost-first-person account of this song, it can awaken sympathy and empathy of listeners if they really pay attention and put an end to racial injustice.

ALICIA KEYS, “HOLY WAR”

This song is all about division by skin color, sexuality, and religious beliefs. We feel as though we are against one another because of our differences and as a result, we only look out for ourselves. In “Holy War,” Alicia encourages us to love one another so we can break down the walls we inadvertently put up around ourselves, so we can “heal each other and feel each other” just as the lyrics go. Essentially, “Holy War” speaks about how love is the only thing stronger than hate which leads to war…but love starts a holy war.

MICHAEL JACKSON, “MAN IN THE MIRROR”

Ah, the good ol’ classic! Michael Jackson never failed to make galvanizing music to help shape the world and reinforce the message that we need to bleed more love into it. “Man in the Mirror” teaches us that in order for us to change the world and make it a better place, we must examine ourselves first and see what we need to improve. We need to humble down and be willing to give to those who are without.

ANDRA DAY, “STAND UP FOR SOMETHING”

“Stand for respect, dignity, if that’s all you got, then that’s all you need.”

These lyrics reflect the soul of the whole song. We can have all the silver and gold in the world but if we don’t have a stand in anything, what is the point? We can do our best work, but if we keep receiving and never give back, what is the point? This song talks about having a cause; living out our purpose in life and we must live our lives worthy of what we stand for and what we believe in.

MARIAH CAREY, “THERE’S GOT TO BE A WAY”

Essentially this song preaches on unity and how it can improve human rights. Mariah mentions issues such as homelessness, bigotry, world hunger, and the like. The song also convicts onlookers who seem not to notice or care about all the horrible injustices in the world. Though this song was released in the early ‘90s, it still remains relevant today.

Working together in unison is powerful because all differences are put aside, and we see people of all walks of life, races, and beliefs working together for a mutual purpose.

MICHAEL JACKSON, “EARTH SONG”

In this song, Michael speaks about global warming and the carelessness of human nature. This record talks about how human activity has negatively impacted the health of the earth for the past centuries. The “Earth Song” encourages us to take better care of our planet as our only home and to be more cognizant of the fact that other humans and creatures are living in places that are being affected by adverse environmental impacts, like polluting waters and deforestation to name a couple.

If you need a playlist on going “M.A.D,” you can easily start with these songs. Timeless, relevant, soulful, and passionate, we can’t always listen for the melody, but we must not neglect the message.

January is National Bingo Month Show of hands – have you played Bingo before? By statistics, just about every hand should be up.

Bingo is rated as the number one game worldwide. And why not? It’s not a hard game to play. There are no complicated rules to remember. All you need is a Bingo card and a dauber (a Bingo marker) or disks to cover the called numbers. What are some interesting facts about the game? Glad you asked!

HISTORY OF THE GAME

Bingo is an old game. Truly. The game originated in Italy and is based on the Italian National Lottery, Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia, which had been played since 1530.

In the United States, credit for the game goes to a New York toy salesman, Edwin Lowe who saw the game played in December 1929 at a fair in Georgia.

German educators used Bingo as a tool to teach students their multiplication tables.

The game was originally called Beano. When a woman shouted ‘Bingo!’ at winning a game, the name stuck, and it’s been Bingo ever since.

HEALTHY BENEFITS

There are health benefits associated with the game. Bingo is considered a stress reliever. Since there is an inherent need to pay attention, a person’s cognitive abilities are exercised each time the game is played.

THE PLAYERS

There’s a social aspect to the game. In fact, that’s the number one reason people play.

Winning the pot is only number five on why people enjoy Bingo.

What’s in a Name?

Reasons to Change or Not Change Your Name after Divorce

The average wedding ceremony takes about 30 minutes and along with nice gifts and well wishes, in most cases, as the bride, you get a new last name. However, if you end up where around 50% of married women do – divorced – should you change your name back to your maiden name or not? Divorce brings lots of changes, from your residence, to parenting, to free time, maybe dating, financial changes and, should you choose, your name.

But what should you consider in choosing to change your name?

CHILDREN AND SHARING THE SAME NAME

Some women don’t want to have a different name than their children, which is understandable, but that shouldn’t keep you from changing your name post-divorce. On the occasion that someone like a teacher at a conference calls you Mrs. Whatever, instead of Ms. So and So, you can choose to correct them or let it slide. If a playmate of your child’s calls you Mrs. Whatever, again you can choose to correct them or let it go. In the big scheme of things, it may not be that big of a deal to you.

REASONS TO CHANGE

If you are thinking that changing your name will help you stick it to your ex, getting some distance from him, you might want to look at your reasoning. Not many decisions made in bitterness and hate turn out to be good ones. Many of us have spent over half our lives getting lost in the shadow of a spouse, often hearing, ‘Aren’t you So and So’s wife?’ That can get old over decades. In today’s society, women work hard to establish their own identity, so if taking your name back helps you move forward in a positive way, and you loved your maiden name, then do it!

CAREER AND REPUTATION

Perhaps you are going back to work after staying at home during your marriage or continuing in a career where people know you and your work by your name. Suppose that before you were married, you were the top sales representative for a company or maybe you are a columnist for a publication and you are known with your married name. If you changed to your maiden name, there might be some confusion, for a time, of people realigning you with your new last name. You want to be recognized for your work and reputation, but you feel like a final step you need to take is to shed your married name. This is a conundrum and one you need to think long and hard about.

COMFORT IN WHO YOU ARE

Most of my friends who are divorced have kept their married name for the simple reason of they’re just comfortable with it. When you’ve had a last name for 20 or more years, it just kind of feels like it’s always been your name. If that’s the case, remember, it’s your business, so don’t let anyone shame you into changing it.

PATIENCE FOR THE LONG HAUL

Be prepared for all the forms and all the people you are going to need to inform of your name change. If you go back to your maiden name or pick an entirely new name, which a lot of women do these days, like maybe using your middle name given to you at birth, as your last name, the process is involved. If you start with a list of the places you need to inform of your name change, then it goes a bit smoother. A visit to the Clerk of Court for a name change application is a good place to start, and you can also get info on where to go from there. Most continue the process at the DMV to get a new license with your chosen name, and then to the Social Security office. After those two big visits, you pretty much have a bunch of phone calls to utility companies, financial institutions, credit cards and in some cases, you may need to submit a copy of the decree that states your name change. Just take your time and look at the process a step by step.

In the end, no matter the last name you have, you are still you, with a few new scars from what you’ve been through, but you’re stronger or on the way to being stronger. If your last name doesn’t make a huge difference to you, then go with your gut. You may change your mind, but you can change your mind and name at any time. What does make a difference is what is at your core, what you know about yourself, what is in your heart and what you continue to give to the world every day. *There are many websites set up to walk you through the process. SHOULD I WATCH THE NEWS?

Personally, I always found watching the news to be difficult. Even as a child, I was either completely bored or terrified of the world because of the bitter taste it left in my mouth. In today’s climate, watching the news is even more difficult for me. About a year ago, I was so hooked up on staying informed about what’s going on in the world that I nervously, but boldly, committed to listening to a daily news podcast before going into work. Although each podcast episode was only five minutes long, I would feel emotionally drained at the end of each segment…and my day had hardly started!

After a week of listening to this news podcast, I noticed a slight change in my morning mood. I zip lined from a peaceful, joyful young woman to an anxious soul who was angry at the patterns of the world. It was not healthy for me, and I knew I had to stop tuning in to the cold news. But I knew I could not afford to remain uninformed. Either I had to toughen up to the constant news, or I had to change my perception of it and respond in a positive, constructive way.

“I JUST CAN’T STOMACH IT!”

There are so many reasons why news-sensitive people dodge the news: sometimes being aware of what’s going on slowly eats away at one’s happiness or sense of security; some people feel it’s a constant reel of negativity; some folks are afraid of being addicted or becoming a “news junkie”; and sometimes watching the news makes individuals feel physically sick. While some people see the news as vital information, others may see it as an ever-spreading virus. But how one perceives and accepts the news is completely up to them.

ALTERNATIVE WAYS OF STAYING INFORMED

Although I abhor watching the news directly, I still want and need, to stay informed of the world around me.

I do this by interacting with sources that are lighter in nature, but still credible:

Talk shows. Watching daily live talk shows can still provide you with adequate coverage of the latest news stories. Think of it as the Valencia filter to your average local news channels. Because talk shows tend to be more lighthearted than the

neutral, straightforward news, our minds are instantly put into ease and relaxation when tuning into our favorites. This makes us more receptive to the news being shared that day. Although a negative news story may still sting, it may not sting as much as watching the traditional news. who gets a good chunk of the news from Twitter and Facebook! Like daytime talk shows, social media has the same effect on our minds when we see a news story posted on our feed. Mostly we log into social media in our downtime, so our minds are already in relaxation mode. Again, being in a relaxed state makes our minds more receptive to what we are being fed. But be careful – not all news stories are from credible sources. Make sure the source is credible and known for sharing authentic news stories.

Word of mouth. Old-fashioned, yes, but maybe

you know a news junkie who can let you in on all the surrounding news…if you’re open to hearing it.

This may be one of the best options because you can always tell your news-watching friend how you like your news delivered. It is likely they will not be as monotonous as your local news anchors but may tailor how they deliver it to your liking.

Read about it. “But wait, isn’t reading the news just as bad as watching it?” It all depends on how you like your coffee. Do you like it strong and black, or sweetened with cream and sugar? Either way, it’s still coffee although the taste is different. If you like to read in general, perhaps reading the news instead of watching it will be easier. There is no monotonous voice echoing the words, so it may not sound as harsh.

If the news angers you, that anger can be the birthplace of passion. Staying informed is the key to positive agency!

The 7 Times When Things Seem Right with the World

In this crazy, perhaps, chaotic world, there are at least seven times when, if for just a moment, things really seem right with the world. I’m not talking about winning the lottery, losing those last 10 pounds, or making it home on an empty tank of gas (although those are pretty awesome). I’m talking about the little, minute times, often overlooked, when your soul says, ‘Ahhhhhh.’

1) Think of the last time you bought a new hardback book. No Kindle or paperback, but a real book.

You get that new bestseller or self-help, motivational read home and you’re comfy on the couch, in your thick robe, feet up with a cup of tea or coffee and reach for that book. That sound of the glue in the spline, in book terms, where the pages come together when you crack it open for the first time is the best. It rarely makes that sounds again with subsequent readings, but that first time is the best. Part of this moment of euphoria is also the smell of the ink and paper. Yep, I’m that weird.

It’s the writer coming out in me. I don’t do electronic reading; I have to have the hardback book for these reasons. I just internally said, ‘Ahhhhh.’

2) When you’ve been outside on a hot day working in the yard or sitting by the pool, nothing is better than a cold soda or beer, for some. Either way, the sound that an ice cold beverage makes when you pop the top starts to quench your thirst immediately.

Your mouth knows what’s coming and it’s ready for that cold liquid to take away the heat of the day.

Now that is a moment of extreme ‘Ahhhhh’ – that first sip. The following gulps lose something, although they continue to satisfy.

There’s just something about that first one.

3) Buying groceries isn’t one of my favorite things to do. In fact, I try and put it off as long as I can, usually until I only have mustard, mayo, and crackers left. As I cruise up and down the aisles, it actually comes to mind how awesome a

new jar of peanut butter would be. So I grab one, and when I get home, nothing gets put in the pantry until a spoon is dug into that new peanut butter. Oh, my goodness. What a great time. That following spoonful just lacks something, but oh, the first one is wonderful.

4) Along the same lines is the moment you open a fresh bag of chips or, in my case, when on the rare occasion I indulge, Cheetos or Doritos. You know what awaits when the seal of the bag is torn, and you get impatient if the bag doesn’t part like the Red Sea. Unless you eat the entire bag, which I don’t recommend, the chips, Cheetos or Doritos will never, ever be as they were that first time. Two hours or two days later, it’s just not the same.

5) When I get a package from Amazon, I’m almost as excited about the bubble wrap in the box as I am about what I ordered. I tear into that sealed box, risking a broken nail and pull out my new gadget, set it aside and start popping the bubble wrap. I can be having the worst, most stressful day and just those few pops can brighten it. I wonder if the guy who invented bubble wrap ever knew that it could be such a stress reliever? Thank you, Mr. Bubble Wrap inventor for taking the place of a Xanax, on occasion.

6) Growing up during in the era of shag carpet led me to the belief that vacuuming is a good thing. You never really knew what was lurking in that deep pile carpet creation; there could be anything from a steak knife, to a lost earring, to the neighbor’s Chihuahua buried in that stuff. Beyond the whole cleanliness thing, which is very important, was the tracks left as you ran the Electrolux over that mile high flooring. I love me some carpet tracks. Today, I have hardwood floors and very little carpet because of the five pups I have, but you can bet, breaking out the vacuum on those carpet areas, although not shag, brings a smile to my face.

7) Of all the moments when things seem right with the world, my personal favorite is at the end of a long day, slipping into a bed with clean sheets.

I swear I hear not only myself say ‘Ahhhh,’ but the angels in heaven sing ‘Hallelujah.’ You might argue with me on the previous moments mentioned, but I think 100% of people and 10 out of 10 dentists would agree, clean sheets are the absolute best!

The next time one of these moments of pureness arises, just take a second to be thankful that in this crazy world, you actually recognized that some things just make you smile and that life is so good.

Loaning Money to Family?

Mixing money and family can quickly become a sticky situation and is pretty much never a good idea. The ‘loan’ becomes a ‘gift’ in no time at all. So what are the best ways to handle this situation? Well, I am glad you asked!

It’s probably safe to say either you’ve loaned or have known someone who loaned money to family and more than likely it didn’t work out well, and there are reasons why.

OPEN-ENDED LOANS

Because there are feelings involved between you and your loved one, loans to family tend to be openended. The parties don’t reach an agreement for a timeline for ‘repayments’ and don’t include ‘interest’ on the loan; those ‘terms’ don’t make you ‘feel’ good about the loan, so you skip that part. You feel like the bad guy setting up payments because that implies that maybe you think your loved one doesn’t intend to repay you. Until that loan is repaid, there is a tension between you both that could’ve been handled the perfect way…by saying ‘No.’ Remember that ‘No’ is both an answer and an explanation. Think about it.

YOU AND YOUR LOAN AREN’T PRIORITIES

When there is a discrepancy between the lender’s and the borrower’s incomes, the borrower may not realize that there is an urgency to repay the loan, nor do they care in many instances. It’s not that you as the lender need the money, it’s the principle that it was loaned in good faith and you expect it to be paid back for the same reason. Your family member knows that, should they not repay, there will be no repercussions, like late fees, high interest, etc. so there is no motivation to pay you back.

THE FINE LINE BETWEEN ENABLING AND HELPING

When you lend money to a family member, although you may think you are helping them, you are giving them an easy way out of their financial problems.

If you just can’t find the word ‘No’ in your vocabulary, try offering to help with one specific payment that is due, like the power bill. Pay that and move on! If they truly appreciate your help, this will be enough. If you are good with money, maybe sit down with the family member and help them with a budget. That will be more helpful in the future than continuing to hand out money.

OVEREXTENDING YOUR OWN FINANCES

ASKING FOR THE MONEY ISN’T EASY TO DO

It can be difficult to ask for repayment of the loan and may turn into a not so fun game, with phone calls made and emails sent, neither ever returned. As the lender continues to worry about the decision to make the loan in the first place, the borrower can develop hurt feelings over the insistent requests for the money to be repaid, making you both feel bad.

FAMILY GATHERINGS CAN BECOME AWKWARD

No matter how much you tell yourself you won’t have negative feelings for your family member who borrowed money when you see each other at family events, go ahead and expect that you will.

It’s human nature to feel like you were taken advantage of because, if they haven’t addressed the elephant in the room, you probably have been. If the situation continues, probably one family member just won’t come to gatherings anymore, and that makes everyone uncomfortable.

THE BORROWER, ALMOST ALWAYS, ASKS FOR MORE

Once you have loaned money to a family member, this person will almost always return when they need more money. In addition, if the word gets out that you are the family ATM, your generosity can be taken advantage of. Don’t become the go-to lender in your family… nothing good comes from it!

What if, while you are waiting for the loan repayment, you hit hard times and need money yourself? You definitely want your money returned, but without a payment schedule or interest on the loan, what are you to do? Where do you go to for help?

YOU COULD LOSE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR RELATIONSHIP

If you loan money to a family member, you may not get your money back, and your relationship may never go back to normal. Over time, the tension between you and the borrower may lead to anger, guilt, and remorse.

Even though you want to be a good person and want to help your loved one, don’t lend them money if you can help it.

Gently refuse the loan and determine how to best help, instead of enabling them.

But if you can’t resist giving them money, don’t think of it as a loan, it is a gift, and you shouldn’t expect to be repaid. Think of it this way, sometimes loving someone involves doing something they do not want, but if you have their best interests in mind, you can have faith in putting the relationship first with a clear conscience.
