OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK:

the publisher perspective

This past month has been incredibly special—I GOT ENGAGED! Gavin’s proposal was the sweetest surprise during our gym’s (Washington Park CrossFit) 2nd Anniversary Party. It was extra meaningful to be surrounded by so many of our members, and my parents and grandparents were there, too! He pretended to be taking a group photo of all of us, but instead, the camera was recording a video. When he stepped into the frame, he got down on one knee!

The following weekend was filled with even more love as we celebrated a special family wedding! On my dad’s side of the family, there are only three girl cousins, each of us 10 years apart— Kelley was born in 1980, I was born in 1990, and Alexandra in 2000. We were overjoyed to celebrate Alexandra and Ryan on their big day. You can see a couple of family photos from the black-tie affair on this page, but make sure to head to page 90 for some gorgeous shots of the bride and groom. Congratulations, Alexandra and Ryan! Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness!

This month, we’ve put together our holiday gift guide! You know we love supporting local businesses, and this guide is all about encouraging our readers to shop local. Whether you’re looking for med spa services, fitness goals, a unique conference experience, or even a donation to a local non-profit—there’s something for everyone on your list. The guide begins on page 56.

If you’re reading this, you’ve already seen our stunning cover featuring Mary Coffey of Boutique Wellness and Manolo’s Boutique Wines and Bistro. The historic Rosenbacher House, where this was shot, is one of my favorite spaces in Winston-Salem. You can read more about it starting on page 52.

Here are some other highlights from this issue:

• In her “Hustle and Heart” column, Taryn shares her top 10 tips from 2024, covering topics from Boundaries to Bold Moves (page 46).

• Don’t miss our very special Christmas Girls’ Night Out on December 10th at Legacy Stables and Events. Learn more and grab your tickets on page 65.

• Western NC is still recovering from the recent hurricane, but Beech Mountain is open and ready for business! There’s no better way to help out than by taking a day trip or long weekend to ski, snowboard, or tube. Beech Mountain is a personal favorite of mine and only two hours away! (page 82)

• Suzy shares four New Year’s Eve bubbly recommendations so you can toast 2025 in style while supporting local NC wineries (page 94).

Wishing everyone a beautiful holiday season!

Chapter You

ur lives are punctuated by aberrations in our routine. Big events such as a new job, marriage, graduation, first child, relocation or winning the lottery create distinct points in our lives, leaving indelible marks complete with sensory recall. These are the chapters that make for our compelling stories.

Chapter You, as I call it, pulls from all the other moments and seasons, giving us a perspective formed by the experiences we’ve collected on the paths we’ve traveled and, at times, stumbled on. This chapter is really about you. We’re altering the narrative a bit, though not fully separating ourselves from a first-person perspective, but rather evaluating from a second-person perspective as an author or stranger would see things and then incorporating those discoveries and truths. We’re bringing them to light as they pertain to us, or rather, you. Think of it as a narrative of your life up until this moment and chapter. You fell in love with this person, you made friends with this person and this was your favorite hobby until this happened. It’s a chronicling of your life, so you can rediscover the joys and feelings these moments brought you.

The purpose of all this is to plan your next chapter, Chapter You. You determine how it’s

written, the adventures, plot twists, comforts and happiness – the whole kit and caboodle.

Chapter You falls in line perfectly with retirement season. Sacrifice, restraint, effort and wisdom have brought you to a place where you’re rewarded with the freedom to embrace your passions, interests and space to focus on yourself.

After spending the better part of adulthood working tirelessly to achieve financial stability and ensure the well being of a family, it is expected to place personal dreams and hobbies on the back burner. However,

retirement presents a well earned chance to rekindle those dreams and enjoy life on your terms. Moving to a senior living community designed for active retirees enables individuals to do just that – pursue passions, explore new activities and spend time on things that bring joy without the constraints of home maintenance and other responsibilities.

One of the most significant benefits of moving into a retirement community is that it provides a supportive environment where seniors can enjoy their interests without the stresses associated with home ownership. Plus, retirement should be all about having fun and doing what you love. Deciding to move early can be advantageous, as it helps keep you active, meaning you can participate in more of what you love for longer – living life to the fullest. This is the prime time to engage in activities like golfing, swimming, hiking or learning a new craft or musical instrument –pursuits that can become more daunting with age. So, don’t delay the decision to transition to a retirement community because it will only reduce the ability to experience retirement as it is meant to be – a time of joy, fulfillment and freedom.

The Lifestyle Advisors at Homestead Hills are ready to answer questions about their retirement lifestyle and help you write your chapter, Chapter You. Call 336.770.2024 to start the conversation.

PEOPLE OF PROMINENCE SERIES

Nancy Smith

“From caring comes courage.” ~ Lao Tzu

People who embody heroism and selflessness come from all walks of life. Imagine if your passion and your life’s work was centered around being a caretaker to the afflicted. Envision if your calling was to be someone who administered joy and happiness to others in their time of greatest suffering. Nancy Smith has been just such an angel on Earth.

July 31st, 2024 was Nancy’s last day as the Assistant Nurse Manager of the Pediatric Hematology Oncology Clinic at Brenner Children’s Hospital. Over the span of 49 years, Nurse Nancy Smith made a profound indentation in the hearts of so many. We were blessed to have her answer some questions for this month’s feature.

As stated by Chad Tucker, whose daughter, Pearl Monroe (Roe Roe) Tucker, was cared for by Nancy throughout her treatment for leukemia:

“Nancy loves with her heart and hands. She doesn’t like attention but deserves so much praise for the impact she’s had on thousands of lives.”

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

I grew up in King. My daddy was a car salesman at Stokes Motor Company, and my mom was a secretary at King Elementary for almost 30 years. I was the baby of the family, my mom and dad had three children and, when my mom was pregnant with her first, my father took a 16-year-old boy in, and he was like my older adopted brother. We had a great big loving family.

TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR PROCESS, YOUR DESIRE AND THE JOURNEY OF BECOMING A DEDICATED NURSE.

As a child, I always knew I wanted to be a nurse. Several events/people influenced that process, the desire and my journey. We had dear friends of our family, Bill and Carolyn Jones, who influenced me greatly. Bill was the town doctor and Carolyn was like his “nurse.” While at his house, once in the middle of the night, a family brought a sick child there. I witnessed his kindness, love and the care he provided them. What an amazing introduction to caring for others.

Also, my two-and-a-half-year-old brother died with meningococcemia at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. I was a baby then but was so affected by the stories that were told to me of his short, beautiful life

Once I was a nurse, Dr. Richard Patterson was the pediatric oncologist at Baptist Hospital. He was like the epitome of dedication and excellence in caring for the sick. I was working nights, and the only time I saw him was when a patient became really sick or if a precious child had died. He always came in and spent so much time with the family, then we walked to the car with them. God’s work in action, helping the sick and occasionally the dying. I just knew becoming a nurse was where God wanted me to be.

WHAT WERE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU FACED DURING YOUR EARLY YEARS IN NURSING?

As a new nurse, I was so young and, of course, inexperienced. I began working as a night nurse in the pediatric inpatient unit. I had the desire to be a nurse, but the challenges of actually caring for sick children, babies and teenagers were scary. Fortunately, a group of great, seasoned nurses and Dr. Patterson taught me and mentored me.

DESCRIBE SOME OF THE MOST PROFOUND BLESSINGS YOU WITNESSED AS A NURSE. The fact that these patients and families allowed me the privilege of loving and caring for them were the blessings. I have been blessed by them by witnessing and learning about courage, fight, love, sharing good times and hard times. They are my blessings.

YOUR WORK AS A PEDIATRIC NURSING HERO IS CLEAR, WHAT DO YOU THINK THOSE WHO CHERISH YOU MIGHT SAY ABOUT YOU?

I hope and pray they would say that maybe I helped make their journey through a difficult time better or easier because of the love and care I gave them.

WHAT ARE THE LESSONS YOU CAME AWAY WITH PERTAINING TO LIFE AND DEATH?

Life is precious. No matter how short or long. They taught me how important hope/faith are. I am stronger, and my faith is stronger because of them. God directed me here at this time for this purpose. That I know.

WHAT KEPT YOU MOTIVATED TO BE SUCH A FORCE FOR GOOD FOR SO MANY PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES?

Love, God’s love. I believe God directed me here, He blessed me. We take life one day at a time. You go, you love, you take care of these patients and families. You make a difference in their lives. I have loved every moment. Yes, some days were very hard. I would not change one thing about my profession as a nurse. My hardest decision ever was trying to decide how and when to retire. That has definitely been a struggle.

TELL US HOW MUSIC FIGURED INTO HOW YOU HELPED SO MANY PATIENTS OVER THE YEARS. (NANCY WOULD OFTEN SING TO/WITH HER YOUNG PATIENTS TO DISTRACT THEM LOVINGLY FROM THEIR TREATMENTS.)

Growing up, we always had music at our home. We’d sing in the car while taking trips. At home, my daddy would play the piano. Music can often open the soul to love, laughter and beauty. I am a really bad ukulele player, but we would pull it out in the clinic and write songs, usually silly ones, for patients and staff. We’d just allow music to take you to another plateau of joy.

DESCRIBE WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE SCHOLARSHIPS NAMED IN YOUR HONOR. (EACH YEAR, ROE ROE’S HEROES CHILDHOOD CANCER FOUNDATION AWARDS EIGHT NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS IN NANCY’S NAME.)

It still doesn’t seem real. The day Roe Roe’s parents – Chad and Meredith Tucker – came to the clinic and told me, I couldn’t grasp it. I am overwhelmingly honored. I don’t deserve it but feel so blessed to be a part of the process of helping young folks pursue their dreams of becoming nurses with this scholarship.

NICHOLS HEARING AND AUDIOLOGY

Navigating the Holidays with Hearing Loss

If your calendar is brimming with family gatherings over the next month, it’s time to rest up, recharge and perhaps consider what may be holding you back in certain social situations – hearing loss.

Facing hearing issues around the holidays can be especially frustrating, as you look to reconnect with family and friends in settings that are fun and festive, but very likely loud! Communication and understanding can be lost in the hustle and bustle of shopping, decorating and celebrating – all of which can be challenging environments if you don’t hear well and struggle to keep up with conversations.

“Those situations can create a great sense of frustration, and following not far behind, increased anxiety,” shares Dr. Anna Nichols, owner of Nichols Hearing & Audiology in Winston-Salem. She also says her practice is seeing younger patients with hearing difficulties, which means that establishing a baseline reading at an initial evaluation can be crucial, no matter your age.

Dr. Nichols is passionate about helping patients take positive steps to improve their hearing and better connect with loved ones. The Nichols team always suggests a spouse or significant other join patients at their initial hearing evaluation –knowing it’s a team effort to improve your daily life together. They are truly focused on developing and nurturing long term relationships with patients – getting to know both their families and their interests.

“Our number one focus is patient care,” Dr. Nichols shares. “It’s also important to recognize and educate yourself on the effects that hearing loss can have on your mental state. With a feeling of isolation, we’ve seen there can be as much as a 60% increase in risk for depression, anxiety and even dementia in patients with moderate to severe hearing loss. A 30% increase in depression is common for individuals with even a minor hearing loss. But, with proper

education and our personalized care, we can turn that around!”

Dr. Nichols has designed her practice to work with individuals to correct a current hearing problem, and also to proactively protect them from developing a more serious issue later on. But, in the meantime, there are tips for more stress-free holidays!

If you’re hosting your extended family for lunch or dinner, think creatively! Consider round tables instead of long tables for dinner seating – offering you a better chance to see faces, which helps with communication. Keep your table centerpieces low to see everyone clearly, and maintain music on the softer side. If you find loud stores or shopping malls stressful, stick with smaller, locally owned businesses, where you’ll typically find a quieter atmosphere. Plus, shopping small is always a good idea.

And, while embracing the joy of the season, don’t be afraid to alert extended family members to your communication needs and hearing sensitivity.

With the added pressures of hosting out-of-town family, office holiday parties and neighborhood get-togethers, it’s the perfect time to address the beautiful sounds and voices you may be missing with the Nichols team – and work towards a new year filled with hearing well and living well!

You can trust the professionals at Nichols Hearing & Audiology for the finest care when it comes to your family’s hearing needs. They offer state-of-the-art technology and the most up-to-date hearing aid options – many that actually connect to smart phones through Bluetooth technology! Nichols Hearing & Audiology is located at 3640 Westgate Center Circle, Suite B, in Winston-Salem, 336.842.3437. Visit the practice online at HearWellLiveWellNC. com, follow them on Facebook at Nichols Hearing & Audiology and on Instagram @ nicholshearingandaudiology.

Keeping It Real

FINDING Y.O.U. IN THIS SEASON

What makes you human?

That’s an odd question to ask as we catapult into this frenzied December, but stay with me.

Despite what you believe, what makes you human is NOT your mistakes and it’s surely NOT your weaknesses. (READ THAT AGAIN!)

What makes you human is knowing the One who made you

In fact, we cannot live authentically human without authentically knowing the One who made us! It’s impossible!

Think about it. Animals have the capacity to live unaware of God. A collection of minerals can exist uninformed about the One who created them. But humanity? This crown of creation necessitates a relationship with its Maker before it can truly be itself!

Every human heart must know the One whose image they bear to understand their own image at all!

Once we truly encounter the essence of who He is, we cannot help but worship the One who made us. His extravagant love rushing toward us evokes a response we cannot contain! As we engage Him, we FEEL His Pleasure, and He BECOMES our pleasure in a depth of love our hearts have never known!

Friend, hear me. Relationship with God is not an addendum once other parts of you become established. This most primal intimacy cannot be undertaken only on those rare occasions you walk into a church. Relationship with God is the very centerpiece of your existence – your breath and your very heartbeat.

How have we forgotten this? “HE made us for Himself; we didn’t make Him!” (Psalm 100:3 MSG) If we take this essential core out of the equation, there is no humanity at all. It’s merely the appearance of a thing lacking the substance of a thing. It’s all a façade!

Y’all, we were made for HIM! Our hearts will remain restless and searching for ANYTHING to fill that emptiness until we find HIM!

What does any of this have to do with the holidays? Friend, this has EVERYTHING to do with the holidays.

During this hectic season, emotions run wild, don’t they? The festive joy surrounding us can leave us feeling like everyone has the perfect family while we suffer in silence, alone. We feel sure that if we had what others enjoy, all would be well.

How I wish I stood right where you are right now! I would look into your eyes and wrap my arms around you. I would tell you all the reasons you are not alone even though it feels like you are. I would help you see that another human’s love is wonderful, but it STILL doesn’t fill the hole in your heart made for HIM.

In fact, if you don’t deeply know who you are, you won’t carry the capacity to receive love in a way that heals your heart and makes you wholly you.

We will know ourselves when we know The One who knows every single nuance of us AND delights in us! From this place of deeply Knowing…we KNOW, and we are deeply Known. (Isn’t that what we all want, to be deeply Known?)

THIS IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE HUMAN!

Whoever you are, wherever you are in your conversation with God, it’s not too late to find yourself by knowing Him. He waits for you with arms wide open! It’s the WHOLE reason we celebrate this glorious time of year. HE CAME…to get where you are, but not leave you where you are.

Let THIS season be the moment that YOU become fully YOU!

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.”
(An

Interpretation of Luke 2: 1-21 by Debbie

One evening, an angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds tending their sheep in a field near Bethlehem. Scripture doesn’t say how many shepherds there were or if they were male or female (in biblical times, women shepherded flocks too). Additionally, scripture doesn’t tell us what time of year this visitation occurred, but many biblical scholars suggest it likely took place in the spring during lambing season; otherwise, it would have been an older child or teen watching the sheep at night. What is clear, however, is that this unexpected heavenly encounter terrified the shepherds, and rightly so! The angel told them to not be afraid (umm...ok...), as the visit was for one purpose and one purpose only: to share with them the Good News that was guaranteed to cause great joy to all people. What could such incredible news be? It was this - the long-awaited Messiah had arrived earlier that day...as a baby boy. The angel did not provide the shepherds with a name; only that the Savior of the World was nearby. The announcement of his name would occur 8 days later when he was circumcised under Jewish law. Psst...because we have access to the Bible on this side of the nativity, we know that the angel Gabriel previously revealed to Joseph in a dream that his fiancé, Mary, would give birth to a son from the Holy Spirit, and he was to be named Yeshua (the Hebrew name for Jesus) which meant “the Lord is SALVATION”. The angel did provide the shepherds with some helpful information: the name of the town where the Lord could be found (Bethlehem, Joseph’s ancestral town as he was a descendent of King David), a description of what the infant would be wearing (swaddling clothes – a customary practice at that time and interestingly, they were also used for a person’s death), and an unusual feature (the baby would be found lying in a manger - a food trough filled with hay for animals to eat). The lone angel’s message was immediately “reinforced” by the sudden appearance of a heavenly host of angels praising God.

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth, peace goodwill to men.”

Linville)

Then, as quickly as the angels arrived, they returned into heaven, leaving the shepherds alone once more. The shepherds did not question what just happened, the source of the message, or the message itself. In fact, scripture reports that the shepherds could not get on their way quickly enough to see the promised infant Messiah. We do not know if the shepherds abandoned their flock, made provisions for the sheep before they left, or if, perhaps, one or more of the shepherds stayed behind to tend to the flocks, but we do know they were “in a hurry”. Scripture does not reveal whether the shepherds had any trouble locating the holy family (as there was no guiding star or GPS) or how long it took them to arrive, but we are assured they finally made it there and found the baby wrapped in bands of cloth, lying in a manger just as the angel said. To put it mildly, the shepherds were in total awe of the “manger scene” as it was exactly as the angel told them! Immediately, the shepherds began sharing all they had heard and seen with everyone in their path, and we are told that those who heard the Good News were equally amazed. Scripture states the shepherds returned (assumingly to resume tending their flocks) glorifying and praising God for all they had experienced. Their faith increased exponentially that day - how could it be otherwise! These humble, lowly shepherds, at the bottom rung of the social ladder, were the very ones God chose to receive and spread the Good News. God knew the shepherds, even in their fear, would not only believe the heavenly proclamation and whole-heartedly accept the message as truth, but exhibit great faith in earnestly seeking out the Savior of the World, and without concern for what others thought, zealously spread the Good News.

“All glory be to God on high, and to the earth be peace; to those on whom his favor rests, goodwill shall never cease.”

Resting with Intention for Health

As the clocks fall back and nights grow longer, we are given the unique opportunity to realign our routines and embrace the comfort and warmth of winter. The Danish concept of Hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”) encourages us to cultivate coziness, well-being and contentment by embracing the beauty of simple comforts – a perfect theme as we prepare for fall and winter.

If you have read my past articles, you know that hygge isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s a mindset. This season, you can bring Hygge into your home and sleep routine, creating a peaceful sanctuary that supports deep, restful sleep, helping you embrace the benefits of seasonal change. With just a few intentional adjustments to your bedroom and evening rituals, you can turn your nights into a warm and restorative experience. Here’s how to improve your nightly routine, setting you up for better sleep all season long.

CREATE A COZY, RESTFUL SPACE

Hygge starts with creating a nurturing environment. Your bedroom should be a place where you feel completely at ease and can let go of the stresses of the day. Simple changes can make a big difference:

• Warm Lighting: Avoid harsh lighting and opt for warm, soft lights. Himalayan salt lamps, dimmable bedside lamps or even candlelight can create a gentle ambiance.

• Textured Layers: Embrace soft textures in your bedding and decor. Think about adding a chunky knit blanket, soft flannel sheets or plush throw pillows. The tactile sensation of these layers helps signal comfort and relaxation.

• Natural Elements: Bring nature indoors by incorporating wood, plants or stone. Not only do they create a serene space, but studies have shown that natural elements reduce stress and support better sleep quality, as well.

Consider this an invitation to make your bedroom your favorite room in the house, one that encourages you to relax, let go and sink into sleep.

ADJUST WITH A GENTLE EVENING ROUTINE

As the days shorten, shifting into an evening wind-down routine becomes essential. Take time to find comfort in small, mindful practices before bed.

• Mindful Tea Ritual: Herbal teas like chamomile or peppermint not only warm the body but also signal the mind that it’s time to unwind. Set aside a few minutes each evening to prepare a cozy mug, sit down and sip slowly.

• Screen-Free Zone: With longer evenings, it’s tempting to curl up with a phone or tablet, but blue light exposure impacts melatonin production, delaying sleep. Try to end screen time at least one hour before bed, instead picking up a comforting book or listening to a favorite podcast.

• Gentle Movement and Breathwork: Incorporate gentle stretching or breathwork exercises to release physical and mental tension. Just a few minutes of stretching or slow, deep breathing can help ease your body and mind into rest mode, preparing you for sleep.

THE POWER OF SCENT AND SOUND

Our senses play a powerful role in sleep. Take time to consider scents and sounds that evoke a sense of well-being.

• Calming Scents: Essential oils like lavender, cedarwood and chamomile are known for their sleep-inducing properties. You can use a diffuser or mist your pillow to add fragrance to your room.

• Ambient Soundscapes: To counter quietness or the abrupt noises of heating systems, try a white noise machine or soothing nature sounds. The gentle murmur of rainfall or soft wind can mask sudden noises that may disturb your rest, creating a constant, relaxing background that enhances sleep.

By integrating Hygge-inspired elements and routines, you can transform nights into a cozy, restorative experience. Creating a sleep sanctuary aligned with the season not only promotes better rest but also brings a sense of joy and contentment. As we settle into the holiday season, spend time embracing the peace and warmth that come with the cooler months. Remember, sleep is a gift and, with a few intentional choices, you can make this season one of the most restful yet.

A STRESS-FREE SEASON

The holiday season is a time of joy, connection, and celebration, but it’s also notorious for stretching us thin— financially, socially, and emotionally. Establishing boundaries in key areas of your life can make the difference between a season filled with stress and one filled with peace. Here’s how you can set practical boundaries to keep the holidays stress-free and meaningful.

1. Budget Boundaries: Spend Smart, Enjoy More

The holidays are a time of generosity, but overspending can quickly dampen the joy. According to recent reports, Americans plan to spend around $997 on holiday shopping this year. While that’s slightly less than in past years, it’s still significant. Instead of comparing your spending to others or feeling pressured to outdo past holidays, focus on what really matters. Create a clear budget, sticking to your non-negotiables, and explore alternative ways to celebrate—whether that’s DIY gifts, experience-based presents, or scaling back on extras. Staying mindful of your spending will help you start the new year without financial regrets.

2. Calendar Boundaries: Protect Your Time, Protect Your Peace

As the holiday invites roll in, it’s easy for your calendar to fill up fast. But before committing to every event, take a step back and ask yourself what matters most to you this season. Whether you’re hoping for a quiet family movie night, time to shop solo, or a chance to attend local holiday events, be intentional about what you say “yes” to. Don’t feel guilty for turning down invitations that don’t align with your priorities. Leaving room for rest and reflection is just as important as any festive outing, so protect your time and make space for what truly brings you joy.

3.

Family Boundaries: Creating Meaningful Moments

Family gatherings are often the highlight of the holidays, but they can also come with their share of stress. Start by having a conversation with your immediate family about shared priorities. Whether it’s attending a Christmas Eve service or volunteering together, make sure everyone is on the same page about what time is reserved just for family. For families with teens or complex extended family dynamics, early communication is key. Set clear boundaries with extended family, especially if they have a tendency to take over holiday plans, to ensure everyone can enjoy the season without tension.

4. Work Boundaries: Balance Productivity and Holiday Cheer

Work can sometimes seep into the holidays, making it hard to fully relax. Setting clear work boundaries early is crucial. If you’re managing deadlines, communicate with your boss or colleagues about your availability and ensure you’ve scheduled any vacation or personal days well in advance. For those who are self-employed, it’s essential to prioritize important tasks while deferring what can wait. Set expectations with clients or partners so you can carve out time for family and celebration. Remember, the holiday magic will pass quickly, but work will still be there when the new year arrives.

5. Health Boundaries: Nurture Yourself, Inside and Out

Between the flurry of holiday events and seasonal stress, your physical and mental health can take a hit. This year, make a point to establish boundaries around your well-being. Whether you’re grieving, feeling overwhelmed, or simply exhausted, be honest about what you need and communicate that with others. It’s okay to turn down events or traditions if they don’t serve you. Prioritize rest, healthy habits, and emotional support to ensure you have the energy to enjoy the parts of the holiday that matter most. By setting boundaries around your health, you’ll create space for a season filled with joy and gratitude.

Conclusion:

The holidays are meant to be magical, but without clear boundaries, they can quickly become overwhelming. By setting limits on your time, spending, work, and even your emotional energy, you’ll give yourself the gift of a more peaceful, joyful season. This year, choose calm over chaos—after all, the best way to embrace the magic of the holidays is by protecting your peace.

Stunning Luxury

As you take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, look around your master bedroom and bathroom. Is it a space where you can see yourself relaxing for a long winter’s nap? Or, is your master suite the last place you want to be? If the latter is true, rest assured, you are not alone. Most people put their bedroom and bathroom at the end of Santa’s list. This holiday season, we are hoping to make your wish come true and transform your master suite into a space where you can nestle all snug in your bed.

Usually, when the thought of remodeling comes to mind, our clients want to work on every part of their house, putting their master suite on the back burner. While bathrooms are a top contender, the kitchen and family room are the most popular requests we receive. Guests and visitors are invited to “make themselves at home” upon entering every area in the house, except the master bedroom and bathroom. While your bedroom and bathroom aren’t where you entertain friends and family, these spaces shouldn’t be ignored when remodeling your home.

Master suites should be a peaceful and private oasis where you can retreat at the end of the day. In a bedroom, we often start by assessing the layout, lighting and storage needs. A well-designed master bedroom blends the essentials with touches of luxury – whether that’s an upholstered headboard, a cozy reading nook or custom cabinetry that keeps everything within reach. The master bathroom is equally important in creating a sanctuary-like feel. Many clients dream of a spa-inspired bathroom with features like a freestanding tub, walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead or gorgeous tile floors. Adding elements like double sinks or a custom makeup area can bring convenience and luxury to daily routines.

Remodeling your master suite is an investment in your daily well being. With a beautiful, functional bedroom and bathroom, you’ll have a place to escape and recharge – perfect for unwinding during winter and year round. At June DeLugas Interiors, our designers are dedicated to bringing your vision to life, crafting a personalized oasis that aligns with your style and needs. The first step is picking up your phone and making an appointment. We look forward to discussing your dream master suite remodel with you.

Social Media’s Impact on Your Money Mindset Making Dollars, Making $ense

There are a variety of viewpoints on how social media influences our society –both good and bad.

After all, some people are spending hours a day on these platforms, and we need to be aware of their impact. From our vantage point, we’re paying close attention to how these networks influence our clients’ spending, saving and investing habits.

Social media often showcases a curated and exaggerated view of reality. People don’t often post about their child’s behavioral problems at school or about the stress of caring for an aging parent. They post about luxury vacations, great seats at sporting events and fancy nights out. It creates a distorted sense of what is “normal” and can lead to an unconscious pressure to keep up.

Let’s say you follow friends or influencers who travel the globe, stay at the best hotels and dine at Michelin star restaurants. Maybe subconsciously, this alters the way you feel about the “standard” vacation you take to the beach, even though you’ve enjoyed it for years.

Or, maybe you’re seeing posts during the holidays of friends spending time in second homes. You might begin to feel that owning a second home is more common and necessary than it really is.

Remind yourself that social media often highlights the best moments of someone’s life, not the everyday reality. Set personal financial goals that reflect your values and priorities rather than the curated lives you see online.

To be clear, there’s nothing wrong with traveling or buying a second home. In fact, proper financial planning can help you make these choices with confidence and within your means. It’s just important to avoid the sense of never having enough or always needing to upgrade.

It should also be mentioned that social media has the potential to inspire positive financial habits as well. Many financial advisors, asset managers and publications have taken to the platforms and can offer valuable advice.

It’s all about what posts appear in your newsfeeds. You can influence this by the pages and profiles you follow. Consider following pages that build your knowledge base, rather than aspirational pages of perfection.

Social media’s influence on our views of money, spending and investing is undeniable. By being aware of its impact, practicing mindful consumption and seeking credible information, we can navigate the digital landscape without compromising our financial well being. Remember, your financial journey is unique, and staying true to your values and goals is the key to long term success.

BIG PROMISE

One New Year’s Day, while still living in Connecticut, I experienced a pre-dawn Eureka! moment. I was walking my first mini poodle, Miss Noelle, down the hill, up the crest toward the village green, past the church, the library, the corner store and up the road near the volunteer firehouse.

That’s when I did an about face, retraced my steps and walked into the corner store to extend a warm “Happy New Year!” to the few residents already sharing a hot morning coffee.

That first day of a brand new year course correction got me thinking about those priceless and fleeting “small moments” that matter every day of the year.

FOUR SMALL STRATEGIES WITH BIG PROMISE

Unlike small thinking with its self-limiting resignation, thinking small is about the graceful embrace of what is present. It’s a form of attention that reminds us to:

1 DO THE NEXT RIGHT THING

Your plate is full. There are too many demands on your precious time. You can put a halt to that tailspin by reminding yourself that you can’t do everything at once, but you will get things done. Doing so is a strength, not a weakness, girlfriend! Then, take a deep breath and ask yourself “What is the right and best thing that I can do in this moment?”

2 BUILD A RIGHT THING STRING

Henrik Edberg, author of The Positivity Blog, encourages us to focus more on “what matters” than on what needs to be done. Now, that’s something to ponder! He suggests: “Do something that you deep down think is the right thing.” That right thing could be for others, or it could be for you. Edberg adds, “Continue the string during your day as best you can. After you have added a right thing to your string – no matter how small it is – make sure to take a few seconds to pause and to appreciate the good thing you did. This boosts the positive mood within and ups the motivation to add another thing to your string.” We tend to think in terms of grand gestures or generous acts of self-sacrifice. Henrik emphasizes moment to moment mindfulness about small things that matter.

3 CREATE SOMETHING SMALL, EVERY DAY

When you think about it, we are all starving artists. There’s some part of you – a talent, interest or craft – that is alive in your soul but receiving scant attention. You know what it is. There are so many “good” reasons to bypass that hum in your being. There’s no time; it’s a waste of time or a bad use of time. And, there’s the “I’m not worth it” rap: Who do I think I am? Most of us have a go-to response we can glom onto. Writer Austin Kleon says the key is to do something small, every day: “Figure out what your little daily chunk of work is, and every day, no matter what, make sure it gets done. People often ask me, “How do you find the time for the work?” And, I answer, “I look for it. You find time in the same place you find spare change – in the nooks and crannies. You find it in the cracks between the big stuff – your commute, your lunch break or the few hours after your kids go to bed. You might have to miss an episode of your favorite TV show, you might have to miss an hour of sleep, but you can find the time to work if you look for it.” Kleon reminds us that “Building a body of work (or a life) is all about the slow accumulation of a day’s worth of effort over time.” It’s the “something small, every day” that counts.

4 MAKE PROGRESS WITH SIMPLICITY

You and I know that many of the things in our lives have built-in obsolescence – the closets, garage, pantry, attic, basement, contacts list and desktop. We have our reasons for holding onto things, and the task of tackling them is daunting. But, greater freedom lies on the other side! The key, once more, is to simplify by thinking small, manageable, one task or area at a time.

Instead of making the practice of “thinking small” a New Year’s resolution, start in this moment by doing the next right thing. Build your string. Create something. Chip away at what no longer serves you.

stylists and support staff exhibit the same high level of service to all Alkali clients.

“We want clients to know and understand our values, how we prioritize mental health challenges with flexibility and support from management to avoid burnout throughout the staff and all the extra efforts we make to provide an experience that’s just as meaningful to our clients,” she shares.

One of the vital ways Amber supports her super talented staff is by providing benefits that aren’t necessarily common in the industry. Stylists receive paid time off as well as unlimited, unpaid time off. Paid educational and growth opportunities are available, so stylists can continue to excel in their field, and the studio invests in customer service training so that both

The studio raised $5,000, matched by $5,000 from partner LMI Builders of Winston-Salem, and $10,000 was sent directly to those NC neighbors in need.

“We are so honored and humbled to be able to provide direct help,” adds Amber. “Every cent we raised has been hand-delivered to families in Sugar Grove, NC, and physical donation items were delivered to a local community center.”

Amber is also proud that her team’s hard work and dedication to their craft has been officially recognized, as Alkali Hair Studio was named one of Salon Today’s Top 200 Salons in North America for three years in a row!

Even the space, with its soothing natural light, lends itself to a sense of peace and harmony. Look for Alkali Studio to grow in March of 2025, with a planned expansion that includes added spa features. Indeed, there is so much more joy to come!

OH, JUDGMENT!

There is a big difference between using sound judgment and being judgmental. We use our judgment every day – cereal or eggs this morning? I need more protein. Eggs. We use it as well on life’s bigger and biggest decisions – relocate to be closer to family or stay put? Stay put, at least for now. The ability to judge is deeply rooted in our shared DNA, our evolutionary story. And, to that extent, making judgments is a very good thing indeed.

But, being judgmental is a whole other thing. It’s about being quick to criticize and to find fault. It’s about being harsh. While making assessments and forming opinions about others is part of human cognition, we cross the line when we are judgmental. You may say, Well, so what? Everyone does it, right? True...but that doesn’t make it right. In my mind, it’s problematic because this behavior stings. It can cause others to shut down or pull away from you. If being judgmental is a deeply ingrained habit, it may act as a deflection that keeps you from doing the one thing you have complete control over – working on yourself.

WHERE OUR JUDGMENTS COME FROM Being judgmental is often rooted in a combination of nature and nurture:

• A sense of insecurity and low self esteem

• Culture and social influences

• Cognitive biases

• A lack of understanding and empathy

• Fear and wariness of those who are different

• The way one was raised

• The green-eyed envy monster

It is also true that being judgmental can provide a measure of comfort by shifting attention away from our own shortcomings and giving us a sense of superiority. Now, that’s something to think about.

JUDGMENT LANE

I became intrigued by this topic when I found myself thinking in a judgmental way toward a casual acquaintance. If it were a once only one-off, I might let it pass. But, in the interest of personal accountability and growth, I realized that I had started down a path called “Judgment Lane.” As I looked deeper, I realized that I was being unduly harsh and devoid of empathy based on a difference in a particular value that I hold dear. Then I did THE WORK. You know, the work you do to address something that is standing in the way of you being the person you want to be or achieving a goal that matters deeply to you.

Making Judgments or Being Judgmental?

MY PERSONAL PATH

Here’s how I got started: I revisited that most important question...and discovered that being judgmental didn’t jibe with being the best version of me. In fact, it was a disconnect with my core values.

Then, I asked myself these three questions:

• Do I enjoy this person’s company? Yes!

• Does this person bring a measure of joy to my life? Yes!

• What good purpose are these “judgy” thoughts serving? Absolutely none. They make me feel like a small-minded worm.

I then coached myself with these key thoughts in mind:

• I don’t need to be on the same page with everyone about everything. In fact, it is often both enlightening and challenging (in a good way) when I am not. I reminded myself that three of my dearest, longstanding girlfriends hold widely different political views from mine. That never gets in the way because we respect each other immensely and enjoy the richness in our friendship without needing to “go there.”

• Being a tolerant, open-minded human is important to me. I may not completely understand your way of thinking, your choices or some of your values, and that’s okay. In turn, you may not understand all of mine. We don’t need to be mirror images of one another!

• Behavior modification takes commitment and time. I’m in! When I notice a judgmental thought, I need to challenge myself. Is this a bias of mine? Am I thinking this way because one of my deeply held values is being triggered? Then I need to think a kinder, “nicer” thought. “Bless her heart” does not count! It has to be a conscious redirect that interrupts the pattern of hanging on to the negative.

• Remember to refrain from turning the judgment inward! Cut myself a little slack, especially when I know I’m feeling anxious or particularly stressed.

Every friend brings something rich and unique to your life. Focus on what you appreciate, and let the rest go.

Hustle & Heart

From Boundaries to Bold Moves: Top 10 Tips from 2024

Before we dive into 2025, let’s take a moment to reflect! From game-changing branding strategies to practical steps toward your brand and business goals, don’t miss this 2024 roundup of everything we’ve tackled in Hustle & Heart. Let this inspire you to keep moving forward and get fired up for what’s next!

#1 TEACHABLE MOMENTS & LESSONS LEARNED

Want your brand to show up as an authority and expert in your industry? Position yourself as an authentic and relatable brand by sharing teaching points. These stories should inspire, educate and resonate with your audience, emphasizing the things for which you truly want to be known. Each story can be different, showcasing personal stories, professional accounts, interesting anecdotes and more.

#2 YOUR BEST LEADS HAVE ALREADY BOUGHT FROM YOU

The people who already know, like and trust you and your brand are more likely to make a purchase again. Review your customer database and identify customers who haven’t worked with you in a while. Reach out to them in an email or on social media highlighting new products, promotions or exclusive offers you think would apply to them. Consider offering a “loyalty discount” or special “alumni client offer” as an incentive.

#3 INITIATE AUTHENTICITY CHECKS TO STAY FOCUSED

We’re bombarded by the marketing, sales, visuals and voice of so many brands that it’s easy to lose sight of your own authentic self. Regularly check in to see if your actions and decisions feel aligned vs. what you think you “should” be doing. Am I doing this because it’s best for my business? Am I leaning into my unique strengths? Does this align with my values and vision?

This column is meant to serve as a resource for readers who seek inspiration and knowledge for building their own small business brands. Through actionable advice, find the encouragement to help you keep living your life with hustle and heart.

#4 CUSTOMERS MAKE THE BEST MAIN CHARACTERS

Use storytelling as a way to put your leads in the mindset of “what if that were me?” Don’t overcomplicate it; just lean into sharing real success stories and transformations. You can tell a story about how a product or service made a difference to a customer or about an inquiry that came in, what they’re struggling with and how you’re working with them to help.

#5 IDENTIFY POTENTIAL COLLABORATORS

Look for businesses that complement rather than compete with your own. Be intentional and think about your customers, how you serve them with your offers and what they find valuable. What service providers, artists, nonprofits, etc. would make for excellent candidates for partnerships that can enrich both your businesses?

#6

IDENTIFY YOUR BRAND’S MARKET ADVANTAGE

Get a clear image of who your competitors really are and what they are doing differently to gauge where you fall in the marketplace. Are your competitors positioning themselves above, below or even with you? Find the underserved element of your ideal audience or niche service or product you know you’re meant to offer that nobody else is!

#7 LET YOUR SALES GOALS BE YOUR CONTENT COMPASS

Is your content moving your followers and viewers through your sales funnel? Content should nurture relationships and build trust, but if you’re not creating content that directly sells your offers, then you’re missing out. Know your sales goals! Which offers are you specifically wanting to book or sell out of right now? What stories do you need to share that support these offers? What details are most eye catching to your audience?

#8 CONSISTENT QUALITY CONTENT IS YOUR BFF

Don’t worry about the quantity of your social media posts, emails, videos or any other content you’re creating. Quality valuable content is an insanely powerful tool! Choose platforms where your target audience is most active and create engaging content that adds value to their lives – not just promotes! Position content to specifically speak to your ideal customers and the value you know they need, want and find valuable.

#9 LEAN INTO WHAT’S WORKING

Don’t just concentrate on what’s going wrong; lean into what’s going right! Monitor the performance of your content to see what’s receiving the most engagement and who is engaging. Review what resonates best with your audience and if you’re reaching current followers/ subscribers or non followers. Give strategies time to work instead of switching things up too often to help identify your content strengths!

#10 HUSTLE & HEART CHALLENGE

While setting goals for 2025 is crucial to success, it’s just as important to reflect on the ones you’ve already crushed. As you step into the new year, give yourself permission to pivot, chase what truly excites you and redefine success on your own terms. You’ve got this – now go after what’s next with confidence!

Holiday for Her: A Gift with a Ripple Effect

As the holiday season approaches, there’s a special initiative making waves that blends the spirit of giving with empowerment. LEAD Girls of NC, an organization dedicated to fostering leadership, confidence and opportunity in young girls, has launched a campaign for the holidays – Holiday for Her. This initiative is a simple yet powerful gesture aimed at brightening the season for young girls who are part of the LEAD Girls program.

THE GIFT OF EMPOWERMENT

At its core, LEAD Girls Holiday for Her is about more than just presents; it’s about showing each girl that she is seen, valued and worthy of celebration. For many young girls, especially those in underrepresented communities, the holidays can sometimes feel like a reminder of what’s missing. This initiative seeks to change that by ensuring that each girl receives what she needs, including an outfit for the winter months, learning materials such as STEM kits and basic necessities such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes and haircare products.

HOW IT WORKS

Holiday for Her involves the community coming together to contribute wishlist gifts for the girls in the LEAD program. Each gift serves as a reminder of the potential within these young women and the community that stands behind them, ready to support their dreams.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF GIVING

While receiving gifts is certainly exciting, the true magic of Holiday for Her lies in the ripple effect it creates. By uplifting girls, the initiative encourages a cycle of kindness and empowerment that extends beyond the holiday season. LEAD girls who benefit from this campaign are inspired to one day pay it forward, helping others in their community or even becoming future leaders themselves.

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED

There are many ways to support Holiday for Her, whether through direct donations online at leadgirlrs.org/donate, hosting a holiday donation box or volunteering. Your involvement can help create a ripple of kindness, support and empowerment that will last far beyond the holidays.

Contact our office today at Brea@leadgirls.org or 336.893.5755.

In the wake of Hurricane Helene’s devastating impact on our mountain communities, we are reminded of the essential things that unite us— family, community, and the power of standing together in the face of adversity. At Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, we see this spirit of compassion and unity in action every single day. We see it in every carefully prepared meal, every hand extended to help, and every moment of celebration, like the joy of graduates completing our culinary training program.

Our mission at Second Harvest goes beyond distributing food— it’s about restoring dignity, rekindling hope, and strengthening the bonds of community. When your support our work, whether through food donations, volunteering, financial contributions, or advocacy, you transform lives. You’re nourishing children so they can succeed academically. You’re enabling seniors to live their golden years with dignity. You’re giving families facing the uncertainties of job loss, illness, or unexpected hardships the support they need to get back on their feet. And in moments of crisis, like natural disasters, your compassion ensures that nutritious meals reach those who need them most.

This holiday season, we warmly invite you to “Serve up Hope” by taking a meaningful step to support our mission, ensuring that everyone has access to nourishing food and opportunities to thrive.

Here are five ways you can join us in making a difference this season:

1. Make a Personal Gift

Every gift matters. With a $10 donation, Second Harvest can provide up to 60 nutritious meals.

2. Honor Loved Ones with a Special Greeting

Honor those who matter most to you by giving the gift of nourishment to those who need it most.

3. Organize a Virtual Food Drive

Engage your friends, family, coworkers, or community groups in a Virtual Food Drive. Together, you can raise funds online to help provide essential foods for our neighbors. It’s a powerful way to multiply your impact and make giving accessible and engaging for everyone involved. Visit SecondHarvestNWNC.org to get started.

4. Join the Fitzgerald Society

Take your support to the next level by becoming part of this dedicated group of donors. As a member of the Fitzgerald Society, you’ll be among those whose annual gifts sustain our mission year-round, providing a consistent source of hope and support for individuals and families across our community.

5. Make a Planned Gift or Donate Stock or a Vehicle

These giving options offer a lasting legacy, allowing you to make a profound impact on our mission while benefiting from unique tax advantages. By making a planned gift, donating appreciated stock, or contributing a vehicle, you help ensure Second Harvest’s ability to serve the community for years to come.

Every act of care brings us closer to a world where everyone has the nourishment they need as a foundation for living a healthy, productive life. Every action contributes to building a stronger, more resilient community. Together, we can turn compassion into real change, one meal, one person, and one family at a time.

Let’s Serve Up Hope—today and always. Thank you for being an essential part of our mission and for sharing your kindness and generosity

A personal statement of love and hope for its dedicated founder and clinical pharmacist, Mary Coffey, Boutique Wellness – and now Manolo’s Boutique Wines & Bistro – is located in the historic West End neighborhood of Winston-Salem.

Open since 2018, this faith-based business offers positive energy and unique inspiration – and the results are always viewed as a team effort. While Mary gently guides patients toward healthier goals, she’s quick to note that she educates and encourages them, but patients do the actual healing.

“Our team treats patients with a wide variety of conditions, and the plan is to optimize the use of medication through Cancer Check Labs for early detection and full functional lab assessment and enhance care through nutrition, supplementation, exercise and mindfulness,” Mary explains. “Through aesthetics and regenerative medicine, we deliver safe, advanced, tailored care for natural beauty and wellness.”

While bonding with a new patient and keeping the lines of communication flowing, Boutique Wellness also delivers treatments that are on the cutting edge of technology, targeting the process of anti-aging from the inside out. With longevity ultimately on everyone’s mind, clients typically range from age 35 to 70, and include a mix of both women and men!

Some of the practice’s most often requested services include Emsculpt, PRF (platelet rich fibrin), Botox, 2D facelifts, radio frequency micro-needling, hormone balancing and sexual wellness, and even hormone replacement therapy for men! Hair restoration is also very popular – which involves balancing hormones, scalp preparation, scalp rejuvenation, red light therapy and the addition of peptides to the scalp. For clients interested in a medical weight loss program, the Boutique Wellness process is more than a simple prescription. They will address hormones, inflammation and any thyroid issues with a goal of keeping the weight off. Next, they add in body contouring.

“On the wellness side, we are definitely seeing more requests for information on our weight loss body contouring program, increasing interest in Emsculpt and we’re working to further enhance our stem cell and longevity programs,” shares Mary.

All procedures at Boutique Wellness are performed by the practice’s medical director, Dr. Joe Cleaver, who is a fellow of the American Board of Anti-Aging/Regenerative Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine and in anti-aging and regenerative medicine, achieving certification by the ABAARM in advanced metabolic endocrinology specializing in

bioidentical hormone therapy. Dr. Cleaver lectures nationally and internationally on the topic of longevity medicine.

Mary is double-board certified in clinical nutrition and from the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. She’s also a board member of the North Carolina Integrative Medical Society, a fellow at the American Academy of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine. Her mindset of hope, health and healing leads her to believe – and therefore teach – that anyone can transform their body if they make that commitment, but 80% is definitely diet and 20% is exercise!

The passion for positivity and a zest for life continues afterhours at Boutique Wellness, as they’ve introduced the community to Boutique Wines, an elegant wine parlor and relaxing extension of their overall experience. Open Wednesday through Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Boutique Wines now offers bourbon and liquor options, as well. Visit boutiquewinesnc.com for details on their carefully curated wine collection, live music every Friday night and to view their beautiful room settings that are available to rent for private family events or corporate gatherings.

Their newest introduction extends the wine experience with an Italian-inspired restaurant, Manolo’s Boutique Wines & Bistro.

Open at lunch and in the evenings, Manolo’s is led by Chef Carmine – a culinary master with more than 30 years experience in the restaurant industry. The bistro offers both indoor and outdoor seating, and will be hosting wine pairing events, so continue to follow their social media pages for more details.

Boutique Wellness and Manolo’s Boutique Wines & Bistro are all located inside the beautiful historic Rosenbacher House at 848 West 5th Street in Winston-Salem, NC, 336.448.0510. Look for them on the West End Holiday Tour on Sunday, December 8th!

Purpose Push:

How to Be Encouraging and Propel Business Success

A key difference between those who are joyful in their work and those who are miserable is whether or not they feel encouraged. Uplifting others goes a long way when it’s crunch time or when we’re attempting new obstacles and, as business owners, we must prepare ourselves and our team for constant change and adaptation. Our roles as leaders aren’t just managing and delegating tasks but also nurturing the potential of each team member, and encouragement is the divine ingredient.

Encouragement sets the stage for everyone to align and commit to the mission of the brand so that when expectations are communicated, it is received with open hearts. When thinking about how to be encouraging, let’s open our study bibles and explore the relationship between Paul and Timothy (1 & 2 Timothy).

Timothy was young and eager to be used by God, but he had much to learn. Paul, as his mentor, guided him patiently, remembering his own past experiences and mistakes so he could offer the best support. Paul’s encouragement was pivotal in Timothy’s ability to carry out God’s plan for the church. Similarly, as business owners, we must approach our teams with the same level of mentorship to help them align with the mission God has given our businesses.

So, how can we encourage our teams in an impactful way? Here are some helpful tips inspired by Paul’s life:

FREELY GIVE POSITIVE STATEMENTS AND GRATITUDE

When leading others, it’s helpful to put ourselves in their role to easily find moments to elevate and thank our team. Most of us love to hear uplifting comments and gratitude about our work because it affirms we are assets. Even if we have helpers that need dramatic improvement, having them in our businesses alleviates something we no longer have to do, so we should let them know our businesses are better because they are in it. We must set an example of encouragement by being specific, genuine and consistent

Sheridan C. Watkins is a journalist and the owner of Perennial Peaces, a jewelry and gifts brand focused on transcending self-worth to all women. Her true work began after climbing out of a dark place with the help of God and therapy and her life mission is to provide tangible peace through her Divine gifts to help women heal and transform their life. Follow the mission on Instagram and Facebook: @perennialpeaces

with our gratefulness. Developing this leadership muscle motivates our teams to continue performing at a high level.

DEVELOP EXPECTATIONS OF OTHERS

As I previously mentioned, encouragement opens hearts. But, we don’t want to inspire our team to work on the wrong things, so it’s essential to develop clear and reasonable expectations based on a deep understanding of each person’s skills, maturity level and experience. Pushing people too quickly or intensely can cause them to retreat and mar their view of our businesses. Paul made this mistake with the mentorship of John Mark (Acts 13:13) which he later recognized just in time as he mentored Timothy (2 Timothy 4:11).

in mind Timothy’s capacity to grow. We can do the same thing and help our team feel supported even when things get tough.

CLARIFY YOUR EXPECTATIONS ALONG THE WAY

We are all at different stages in our personal and professional journey, so we must analyze the strengths and weaknesses of our helpers to tailor our expectations for what they can realistically achieve. And, as our business matures, so will the expectations of our team without being overwhelming.

MONITOR YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF OTHERS

Circumstances change, and so should expectations. Being a business owner calls for adaptation externally with our customers and internally with our staff. Sometimes, personal challenges can affect roles where we previously excelled, so it’s vital to treat our team with grace, empathy and understanding. We can do this without compromising the integrity of our business by revising and reducing our expectations and even letting our customers know what’s going on internally. We’re all imperfect humans, and that’s acceptable. Paul was adaptable in his mentorship with Timothy, always keeping

This goes hand-in-hand with the last point. It’s important to remember that clear expectations aren’t just set at the beginning of a project. We need repetition, so as things progress, we should continue communicating what we need and expect from our team. We should be proactive about checking in and assuring everyone is on the same page to prevent or eliminate confusion before an avoidable problem arises. Clarifying shouldn’t be an annoying task but should allow team members to feel confident in their tasks and meet our expectations.

As we head into 2025, let’s commit to being business leaders who encourage, uplift and strengthen our teams. When we freely give encouragement and gratitude while setting clear expectations, we create an environment where people can thrive and expedite business success. The health and success of our businesses will be built on the foundation of a team that feels appreciated, motivated and aligned. God will allow the right people to enter our orbits, but it’s our duty to handle them with care. Just as Paul empowered Timothy to carry out God’s mission, you too can empower your team to achieve greatness. I have faith in you.

Perennial Peaces

Each of Us is a Flower, Growing in God’s Garden

Crafted to reflect both your inner and outer beauty, Perennial Peaces reflects the inspiration of nature, faith and guiding others to feel their worth – all deeply personal to Founder and Designer Sheridan Watkins.

That authentic inspiration, blended with her love for handcrafted artistry, is a winning combination that Sheridan launched in 2022, after changing her previous small business name (Shairpins) to Perennial Peaces. And yes, there is meaning behind the signature name!

“Perennial represents plants and resilience, symbolizing strength and renewal, and I spelled ‘Peaces’ to reflect my mission of spreading peace through my jewelry,” she shares, noting that her creative process is intuitive. Perennial Peaces offers handcrafted textile jewelry for fashion and flower lovers who love to express their individuality – with what Sheridan describes as wearable art. You may also recognize her name as the writer of Forsyth Woman’s Purpose Push column, where she relies on her own divine gifts to empower women of all ages.

“With jewelry, I start with an idea and see if I can bring it to life. Originally, I began using fabric for its affordability and vibrant colors; and now, it’s a staple, showing that anything – even simple materials – can lead to success,” Sheridan explains. “Being able to repurpose fabric so its longevity is extended is the coolest thing about what I create. Most of my textile inventory is donated.”

Always with thought and intention, she loves creating jewelry and fashion accents that carry a deeper meaning and admits to getting completely immersed in each new “peace.”

“My favorite design is always the newest collection, and the newest collection I have now is the Mosaic Collection,” she adds. “One customer asked me to make a wedding hair clip using fabric from her grandmother’s shirt. It was a special and meaningful project, and we formed a great friendship through it.”

As her unique business continues to grow, Sheridan loves offering words of wisdom to budding entrepreneurs.

“You were created with purpose, and your ideas are meant to be shared! Start small – use craft shows and social media to test the market and get feedback from those who already resonate with your work, and communicate with other entrepreneurs doing similar things.”

Look for Sheridan and Perennial Peaces this month at the Sawtooth Holiday Market on December 7th from 10:00 a.m.4:00 p.m., and at the Korner’s Folly German Christmas Market on December 14th from 10:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Visit perennialpeaces.com to stay up to date on where to find Sheridan’s amazing collections locally. If you find something you love on the website but prefer a different color or pattern, she is happy to customize any design as well as incorporate your own sentimental fabric (think weddings and anniversaries) to create truly special jewelry that mirrors your personality. See more Perennial Peaces and share the love on Facebook and Instagram @perennialpeaces or email Sheridan directly at info@ perennialpeaces.com.

“I absolutely love all the jewelry Perennial Peaces creates. Each item is handmade with time, love and dedication, and you can truly tell. The quality is top notch, and the designs are so unique. If you ever get the chance to work with Sheridan, you will NOT be disappointed! Thank you, Sheridan, for always making me feel beautiful while wearing Perennial Peaces!” ~ Mallorie D.

“Sheridan is a wonderful person who cares about making a relationship with the customer, just as much as a sale. Her work is unique, beautiful and filled with heart. That’s what keeps me coming back.” ~ Jennifer G.

5 Must-Try Holiday Cocktails

These Five Festive Cocktails Bring Tons of Cheer This Holiday Season

The holidays are great times to try out new cocktails! However, unless you’re a bartender or know a lot about mixology, you might be stuck on what to try and how to make it. One place I’ve had great success in finding new cocktail ideas is on Instagram. Seriously, there is no shortage of ideas there!

GRINCH MIMOSAS

This one is so fun and, as it’s a mimosa, is great for your Christmas brunch!

Ingredients:

1 bottle of Prosecco

½ ounce of Blue Curacao

2/3 ounce of pineapple juice or orange juice

(Pro Tip: Orange juice actually gives better green color)

Cranberries for garnish

Directions:

1. Put in the Blue Curacao and juice first for the green color. You might need to adjust amounts to get the color right.

2. Add in Prosecco.

3. Garnish & serve.

Recipe from @cocktailswithwhiskey

Below are a few of my favorites. I hope they are ones that make it into your holiday parties or cocktail hours and you enjoy them, too! Plus, another great idea is adding a favorite liquor to any holiday punch or your hot chocolate (try it with peppermint schnapps).

CRANBERRY ORANGE FIZZ

While we love all these recipes, this is probably my family’s favorite. It’s so simple but tastes so good! I originally made it for a party, but we liked it so much, I often add it to a dinner.

Ingredients:

Cranberries

Oranges

2 ounces Gin or Vodka

½ ounce of lemon or lime juice

1 ounce cranberry juice

1 ½ ounces of orange juice

1 bottle of Prosecco

Directions:

1. Muddle cranberries and oranges.

2. Mix together liquor and juices with ice

3. Strain into glass.

4. Top off glass with Prosecco.

POMEGRANATE MARTINI

I love a good martini, and adding festive twists only makes them better during the holidays!

Ingredients:

3 ounces Vodka

3 ounces pomegranate juice

½ ounce triple sec

½ ounce lime juice

½ ounce grenadine

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.

2. Shake vigorously.

3. Strain into glass with sugar around the rim.

Recipe from @theeverydayem

SANTA MARGARITA

Margaritas don’t have to be a tropical-only drink. This spin allows it to have all the festiveness of the season.

Ingredients:

1 ½ ounces tequila

1 ounce Cointreau

1 ounce lime juice

1 ½ ounces raspberry syrup

2 ounces cranberry juice

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice.

3. Strain into glass with coconut around the rim.

4. Garnish with cherries and a Santa icing decoration.

Recipe from @styledbydaisies

CHRISTMAS COOKIE COCKTAIL

A holiday cocktail list isn’t complete without a drink inspired by Christmas cookies!

Ingredients:

1 ½ ounces Vanilla Vodka

1 ounce Amaretto

1 ½ ounces Irish Cream

1 ounce milk

MY APOCALYPTIC WEEKEND IN NORTHWEST NC IN THE WAKE OF HURRICANE HELENE

In late September, I attended a conference in Cherokee, NC. My travel companions and I set out for home on a Friday morning, bracing for some weather-related issues from Hurricane Helene, but we were completely unprepared for what lay ahead – multiple road closures, downed trees and power lines, flooding and mudslides. We were rerouted to Asheville which was without power, or WiFi, and had experienced widespread damage. It felt like a surreal blend of The Walking Dead and Survivor – maybe a bit dramatic, but it was far from pleasant.

We ended up in an Ingle’s parking lot, which felt a bit sketchy, and we were running low on gas. Someone told us that a nearby Publix had power and WiFi, but as we prepared to leave, our car battery died. So, we spent the night in that parking lot, relying on the kindness of strangers until we got help the next day.

This experience restored a little of my faith in humanity. I may not remember everyone’s name, but here’s a heartfelt shout-out to a few who made a difference:

• Brian and Jen gave us a ride, so we could contact our loved ones.

• A group of strangers tracked down jumper cables and got our car started.

• The lady at Ingle’s shared gas from her own can when there was none available.

• The truck driver stayed overnight in Ingle’s parking lot, keeping a watchful eye on all of us.

• Robin generously shared toilet paper and water.

• Juan brought a power strip to Publix, so everyone could charge their devices.

• A kind nurse offered four strangers a place to stay at her townhouse on Saturday night.

• And, the Publix staff in Asheville, who did an outstanding job serving the flood of people in need of WiFi and groceries.

Lastly, a huge thank you to my friend’s husband, who came to our rescue with gas, a new battery and water for those we were leaving behind. I’m still amazed at how he made it through the roadblocks, but we were beyond grateful.

We spent just 36 hours in Western NC following the aftermath of Helene, and it was terrifying. My heart goes out to those still grappling with its effects.

During that short time, I learned a few key lessons:

1. God is good. He guided me and my travel companions through the experience, and we emerged safely with a positive outcome.

2. People are inherently good. We encountered numerous acts of generosity and support from strangers along the way.

3. We are too reliant on technology. The absence of WiFi left many people on edge, a reminder of how dependent we’ve become.

4. I can survive without coffee.

5. Preparedness is key. Keeping a “survival kit” in your car – snacks, water, jumper cables, and cash – is a really good idea, especially when bad weather is predicted.

ENJOYING THE HOLIDAYS WITHOUT THE DREAD OF JANUARY 2ND: A BALANCED APPROACH

IG @coachjanebb FB @coachjanebb

The holiday season is full of delicious food, festivities and gatherings that bring joy and connection. Yet, for many, this time of year can bring a sense of anxiety – especially when thinking about how indulgent meals and sweet treats might impact health and wellness goals. The worry about starting the new year with a few extra pounds is common, but it doesn’t have to be inevitable. With a few strategic approaches, you can savor the holiday celebrations without the dread of January 2nd!

SHIFT YOUR MINDSET: LET GO OF THE ALL-OR-NOTHING APPROACH

One of the biggest challenges during the holidays is falling into an “allor-nothing” mindset. Many see the holidays as a time to indulge, thinking that a few treats mean we’ve already blown our health goals. This often leads to overindulgence, assuming we’ll “get back on track” in January.

But here’s the reality: The holidays are just a few days scattered across two months. Focus on enjoying your favorite holiday meals while making balanced choices the rest of the time. One meal won’t derail your progress, just as one healthy meal won’t fix everything.

EMBRACE ABUNDANCE, NOT SCARCITY

Food memories are part of holiday traditions, but they don’t have to be exclusive to this time of year. If you’re tempted to overeat Aunt Sally’s famous casserole, remember that you can enjoy that dish any time. Shifting your mindset from scarcity to abundance helps reduce the urge to overeat just because it’s a special occasion.

PLANNING IS KEY: SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

A little planning can go a long way in keeping you on track. This doesn’t mean strict diets or deprivation. Focus on strategies like calorie cycling and adding more movement. If a big holiday meal is coming up, balance it by eating lighter in the days before the event.

Increase your activity levels during the week of a holiday event. Simple movement “snacks” like adding a few extra walks can help. And, don’t forget water and sleep – staying hydrated and well rested helps control cravings and maintain energy levels.

STRATEGY FOR A SMART PLATE: SAVOR EVERY BITE

Holiday parties can be filled with tempting appetizers, decadent desserts and everything in between. A little mindfulness can help you enjoy these without overdoing it. Try a protein shake or broth-based soup before a gathering to curb your appetite.

Use the “one plate” rule – a small plate for appetizers, a dinner plate for your main meal and a small plate for dessert. Our taste buds enjoy the first few bites the most, so take your time and savor each one.

HANDLE TRIGGERS AND BUFFERS

Holiday stress and emotional eating can be real triggers for many. Understanding your triggers and having a plan in place can make a difference. If you tend to eat when stressed, try a breathing exercise. Research suggests that deep, controlled breathing can lower anxiety and improve mood.

Have a few “buffers” in place to prevent turning a small slip into a full on binge. Brush your teeth after a meal or chew gum to curb the desire to keep snacking. If leftovers are a weakness, share them with friends or store them out of sight.

CONSISTENCY OVER PERFECTION

Above all, remember that consistency is more important than perfection. If your holiday meal doesn’t go as planned, avoid falling into the trap of self blame. Instead, return to your healthy habits the next day. Studies show that missing a day of a habit doesn’t impact long term success – what matters is how quickly you get back on track.

Ask yourself, “Was it worth it?” If not, think about how you could adjust next time. Use it as a learning experience to make a different choice in the future.

CELEBRATE YOUR WINS

It’s easy to focus on what went wrong, but don’t forget to celebrate your successes. Acknowledging when you stick to your plan or make choices that align with your goals helps reinforce those behaviors. Even small wins – like choosing a salad instead of seconds or taking a post dinner walk – can boost your mood and keep you motivated.

The holiday season doesn’t have to be a time of stress and regret. By shifting your mindset, planning ahead and embracing balance, you can enjoy the season’s joys while feeling great about how you’ll start the new year. It’s not about restriction but about finding a way to enjoy the holidays in a way that leaves you feeling good, both physically and emotionally.

A Series Uncovering Vintage Gems in and around Forsyth County

Shopping local consignment, thrift and vintage stores helps reduce waste, support small business owners and sparks new hobbies among those who get a thrill out of rummaging through pre-owned goods on a Saturday afternoon. With mass consumerism running rampant with the ease of online shopping and next-day delivery options at major retailers, it’s easy to settle for convenience over quality. However, the Triad hosts a handful of locations that provide high-quality, pre-owned goods at an affordable price that benefits the environment and local economy this holiday season. Before checking Amazon or “fast fashion” websites for the media, art or clothing items you need, shop secondhand in the Winston-Salem area to keep the environment healthy and local businesses happy. Below are just a few of the fabulous thrift and consignment joints in the area that offer unique, pre-owned products with storefronts just as charming.

If you are one of the nearly six million people who tune into “The Voice” each season, I’m with you. The competition, the silliness and oh, the talent! Of course, I don’t look to “The Voice” for pearls of wisdom, but I’m always open to it. Some of the personal stories of contestants melt my heart. Commenting on the journey of one vocal hopeful, Judge Gwen Stefani insightfully said: “That’s right. Don’t waste your pain.”

That four word statement stayed with me all through the next day and took up residence in my thought space. With a bold backward glance at my own journey and that of others close to my heart, I asked: How have we managed to move forward? How have we managed to not waste our pain? Some of us experienced significant pain brought on by dysfunctional relationships, painful divorces or grief piled on by the tragic, sudden losses of loved ones. Others experienced the shock and pain of chronic or life-threatening illness, children lost to addiction and severe personal hardship that drastically changed life as they knew it.

There is no prettying up here. The pain was and is real; and, so is the fact that we are all still here, still standing, still moving forward. I marvel at our resiliency. In a very real way, every single one of us was profoundly changed by the crushing pain or trauma we experienced. We all know folks who don’t make it back, who succumb to depression, to unhealthy forms of escape, to self-neglect, to despair or worse. We don’t judge because we get it.

Gwen Stefani’s “don’t waste your pain” moment reminded me of how those I know followed that wisdom. No matter how deeply affected, they found a way to move forward. I confess that I find it hard to say that any one of us is “completely healed,” as though pain, trauma and its aftereffects can be wiped clean like a blackboard. I don’t think it works that way. Not one of us is the person we were before the you-know-what hit the fan. We’re different. We’ve been shaken to the core and have learned that what we do with the aftermath is on us.

I’ve looked, and oh, how I have listened. Here are some of the ways we dealt with that mess so that our pain wasn’t wasted:

WE BROKE OUR SILENCE

We laid ourselves bare to those we trust most. Ugly, raw and a hot, honest mess. Some of us sought the wisdom and experience of trained psychotherapists, psychologists and spiritual advisors. By sharing our pain and being understood and comforted by others, we began the journey to healing.

WE CHALLENGED OUR THINKING

Some of us asked ourselves what part we played in the pain and trauma we were experiencing. We found the grace to ask “Is there something I am supposed to learn from this? Or, what can I possibly learn from this? By doing so, we chose not to be a victim of our experience.

WE WORKED ON OUR ANGER AND REACHED FOR FORGIVENESS

We recognized how our anger kept us trapped. We began to let go of the bad feelings inside of us to make room for more of the good stuff. Doing so doesn’t mean that someone who hurt you is off the hook; it only means that we are no longer allowing our angry emotions to hold us hostage.

WE CHANNELED OUR PAIN CREATIVELY

Many of us tapped into our creativity to channel our experience. Some of us sang our way through, others wrote cathartic poetry or took a brush to a canvas. We leaned into a very personal outlet for transforming our pain.

WE REMINDED OURSELVES THAT WE ARE NOT ALONE

In the throes of deep pain, trauma or loss, we can feel completely alone and unmoored. Many of us reminded ourselves and one another that there are others who “get it,” whether that’s the shock of betrayal, the shame of sexual assault, the despair of losing a child or being diagnosed with a deadly disease.

WE GIFTED OUR STORY

By walking this path, we grew in insight and strength; we understood that we needn’t waste our pain. That even this which has caused us so much suffering, can be turned into a humble yet strong offering to someone on a similar journey.

We renewed our commitment to gratitude as the fuel to sustain ourselves.

Gifting the

How many times have you heard someone observe aloud that the best things in life are free? I don’t know about you, but as a much younger person, I scoffed, or more likely, rolled my eyes when someone offered up those trite words. There are just some things that we don’t “get” until we’ve lived a little more, until our own experience offers up the evidence, you might say. Looking back, I now see that seven-word phrase for what it is – an intangible gift to be savored and pondered.

With close family members spanning the ages of a mere one to a grand 80, I am asking myself how often and how mindfully I am gifting the intangibles. You know, things like:

- kindness - patience - support - compassion

Even good cheer when needed.

And then, unexpectedly, I find myself thinking about two recent conversations that made me see another – selfesteem – the overall sense that a person has in his or her value or worth.

When you observe someone, you can see the difference between self-confidence and self-esteem. The first is more about having trust in certain capabilities – I’m great at learning languages, for example, but numbers confound me! Confidence in the former, trepidation in the latter. Self-esteem is different. It cuts to the core of how we see ourselves and often reveals itself when the chips are down.

Research tells us that self-esteem is “based on what we know about ourselves and how we feel about what we know.” When our self-esteem is healthy, we see ourselves as worthy and act in our own best interest. When it’s not, we’re bombarded by a host of “I’m less than” thoughts and feelings. When you care about someone, it’s hard to hear them get stuck in a place where they are clearly devaluing themselves.

Many of us are adept at confidence boosting. Look no further than those “you go, girl” messages and thumbs up emojis we’re fond of sending. That’s a good thing, of course, but when someone’s self-esteem needs shoring up, it’s our showing up that can make a positive difference.

It’s an intangible gift that is nothing short of priceless. are S g I Hear YOU

6 WAYS TO HELP BOOST SOMEONE’S SELF-ESTEEM

• Listen up. Create an open space in your conversation, so they can speak from the heart. Focus all of your attention on their words, their tone of voice and even their body language. When you “gift” in this way, you send the message that their concerns matter and are worthy of being heard and understood. This, in turn, communicates that they matter.

• Express your care and concern. Speak from your heart. Let them know how much you value them and their place in your life. When you share this, you send a powerful message about their value –whether or not they see it right now.

• Let them hear your sincere, positive feedback. You might start with something like “I hear you. And, I’d also like to share what I see.” Then offer up specific qualities or strengths that amaze you about them. It’s crazy how seldom we tell the people we care about the most how truly incredible they are. We sometimes think “well, they already know I think they’re awesome” or “we’ve been friends forever, so it’s obvious.” No, they don’t and no, it isn’t. Put it out there. It will act as a positive counterpoint when the demons of low self-esteem start acting up.

• Reflect what you see. Remind them of their successes, their courage and their proven ability to get back up when they’ve been down. It’s a little like “producing the evidence.”

• Acknowledge and embrace the absurdity. Let’s be honest – life is one crazy ride for most of us. When that aspect of the journey arises in the conversation, be ready to go there to find the humor. Doing so helps to put perspective on the bigger picture.

• Encourage them to do the things that they enjoy and to “take that next step.” We can easily get stuck in a vicious cycle of negative self-talk when we question our value and our fundamental worth. By encouraging the person you care about to move forward, you are also communicating “you are worth it.”

Shake Things Up This Holiday Season

WITH THESE ALTERNATIVE GIFT-GIVING IDEAS

The holidays are filled with joyful traditions… time-honored meals with family, festive decorations in our home and gifts for those we love! Picking out presents can be lots of fun, and sometimes, quite challenging. It can be tempting to quickly buy things without much thought just to cross names off your list –but you may end up giving unwanted gifts.

Unique gift ideas can turn a simple gesture into a memorable experience for the giver and the recipient which can make the holidays even more special. This thoughtful approach to gift-giving can enhance the joy of the season while making a positive impact on the community, as well.

This holiday season, consider these gift-giving ideas for the most important people on your list.

EXPERIENCE GIFTS

Special experiences often make the best gifts! They can be shared with others, and they’re usually remembered for years to come. The sky’s the limit in this category of gift giving, so no matter what your recipient’s interests (or your budget), you’ll find an option that’s just right.

For Example:

• Sports team tickets or season passes

• Gift card to a favorite restaurant

• Voucher for pampering (massage, manicure, facial)

• Tickets to a concert

• Zoo or museum membership

• Movie theater gift cards

MEMORIES

Nostalgia is defined as a sentimental longing or a wistful affection for the past. Holiday time is the perfect opportunity to give a gift that evokes nostalgia by choosing a gift that reminds your loved one of the past.

For Example:

• Converting pictures or old media into current digital format

• Creating a storybook using pictures from your life together

• Writing down memories of the two of you in a special journal

SERVICE GIFTS

Time is fleeting and so very precious which is why it makes such a special gift. Sometimes, all your loved one wants is quality time with you, so your present can simply be to be present! You can offer your time in many different ways that are sure to be appreciated by the receiver of this special gift.

For Example:

• Babysitting, pet sitting or house sitting

• Taking them out to a special destination to spend the day together

• Cook them a gourmet meal

• Offer lessons in something at which you’re skilled

• Help with cleaning or house projects

LEARNING GIFTS

Learning can improve our brains and allow us to be more interesting people. (Learning something new with a loved one also promotes bonding, so this gift category is an excellent choice.)

For Example:

• Lessons for an activity they’re interested in (tap dancing, yoga, ballroom dancing, tennis)

• A cooking class

• An art or craft class

• A community college course

Whatever gifts you choose, take time to think about what the loved ones on your list might genuinely love to receive, and begin your search with those thoughts in mind. Thoughtful, intentional gift giving can make your celebration more meaningful and bring you closer to those you cherish the most.

BEFRIEND

It took me a long time to really like myself. I had to do the inside work, make a commitment to reverse course on a storyline that was warped and a self-talk that served no good purpose. It’s been a breathtaking journey that has changed me beyond measure. I want you – wherever you are on your unique female journey – to really like yourself, too.

Here’s what I know, and it is for you:

COMMIT TO BEING YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND. This is step one, even if you’re skeptical, because it starts in your head. Once you make a non-negotiable decision to embrace yourself, the supportive behaviors are easier to adopt. Here goes:

SAY “GOODBYE” TO YOUR INNER MEAN GIRL. You’ll need to get a handle on your self-talk. You probably have a good idea how and why the mean girl barbs became your go-to. You can point to your upbringing, your middle school years or an emotionally damaging relationship. The next time your inner mean girl starts trash talking you, pause and ask yourself: “Would I hurl that insult at my BFF? How would I feel if my daughter talked to herself in this way?” Begin to develop the habit of giving that mean girl the boot because

REPLACE SELF-CRITICISM WITH SELF-ACCEPTANCE. Did you know that more than two-thirds of all women habitually hurl self-criticism at the woman in the mirror? Repeated self-criticism erodes your confidence and leads to fear of failure. When you practice self-acceptance instead, you acknowledge your best qualities and strengths, and don’t compare yourself to others. You focus on being your best you. Rather than scold yourself for being an idiot for losing your phone again, you acknowledge that you’ve had a lot on your plate and you’ve been distracted. Think in terms of compassion instead of criticism. No meanness there!

GET REACQUAINTED. Becoming your best you also means actively embracing the things that you love, the things that maybe you’ve let slip in the hurly-burly of life. A friend says, “I used to go on at least one retreat every year, but honestly, it’s been since forever.” Another laments “I just love to bake, but there doesn’t seem to be any time for it.” Start carving out time to embrace what you’ve missed – true, you will have to plan ahead, but that’s how you show yourself some love! The idea is to focus on enjoying your own company in ways that work for you.

BE THE QUEEN OF BOUNDARIES.

Many women struggle with this because they’ve been socialized to feel uncomfortable saying “no,” or they think they have a responsibility to “serve” in every situation. Healthy self-respect requires that you balance saying “yes” and “no” by safeguarding your time and your energy mindfully – so you can give fully when it makes sense to do so.

GIFT YOURSELF. How often do you gift others? Is it way out of whack with how little you gift yourself? Being your own best friend means allowing yourself to be your own gift recipient! Maybe it’s a half hour of complete peace as you listen to the birds or a long-postponed massage. Whatever brings you joy and happiness is your gift to you.

PRACTICE SELF-DIRECTED ACTS OF KINDNESS. So, your friend texted that she hasn’t been able to reach out because she’s had such a rough few weeks. You probably responded by doing something nice for her, right? Some kind words, and an invitation to call anytime to unload, a drink after work – whatever. Do the same for yourself, especially when you’re the one having a rough time of it.

LEARN WHAT SOOTHES YOU, INDULGES YOU AND MAKES YOU LAUGH. For good reason, we’re constantly bombarded with self-care reminders and admonishments. Take some time to really understand how to embrace these three self-care go-tos in your own way.

NURTURE YOUR INNER KNOWING. Learn to really be with yourself. Listen closely to your thoughts and feelings and seek to understand what they’re trying to tell you. Be patient and stay with it. Refresh your values, goals and commitments as you see fit. The point is to feed the intuition that allows you to be there – liking yourself – always.

On the Road Again

A

DECADE OF SOLO TRAVEL

I sat down to write this month’s “On the Road Again” column and realized it had been 10 years since I began my solo travel journey. What started as a quick weekend trip away to Louisville, KY for a Volbeat concert alone turned into an insatiable appetite for adventure years later.

Alone, I’ve hiked in the hot desert in Utah for miles on end, fallen profusely in love with Italy, fulfilled my childhood dream of seeing the Neuschwanstein castle in Germany and listened to my fair share of reggaeton in Miami. I first learned how to use a metro system in Naples, Italy, of all places, encountered friendly and not-so-friendly people in various locations and have watched my perspective on life change along the way.

My first trip alone caused a massive argument between my parents and myself, as they didn’t understand why a 22-year-old young woman would want to attend a rock concert alone in another state. Although I almost canceled to appease them, I pushed through the stress and disappointment I was causing and attended anyway. I knew deep down how much the concert meant to me and how much I needed to assert my independence as a young adult. I rode a mechanical bull for the first (and last) time, had a blast at the concert and enjoyed navigating an airport for the first time alone.

The next year, I attended another concert in Denver, Colorado where I had a hairy encounter with a Russian Uber driver, gallivanted in Downtown Denver with new friends I made on a whim (two of which ended up getting married a couple of years later after also meeting as strangers that night) and escaped the stressors of graduate school for a few days.

After a few more solo concerts, I concluded it was time to take an international trip alone. I chose Munich, Germany for reasons I cannot recall six years later, aside from my desire to take a day trip to the nearby Neuschwanstein castle after seeing a photo of it on my sixth grade history teacher’s wall every day and not comprehending how it could be a real destination. I mingled with fellow American tourists at the Hard Rock Café in the evenings (something I’m quite ashamed of now as a tourist), met a few cute German bartenders and was fortunate enough to visit and tour Dachau Concentration Camp for a taste of sobering history amidst my trip.

Interestingly enough, I almost decided not to board the plane for Germany. I had sudden cold feet in the airport and called my dad, who encouraged me to push through. Had I listened to my fear and headed home, I would have missed out on a lifechanging opportunity.

I’m not sure what exactly drew me to Italy, but the country became my next dream destination. For years, I planned, strategized, Door Dashed for hours to save up the funds and fantasized about finally touching down in Rome after the pandemic derailed my plans for an extra year-and-a-half. When domestic travel was allowed, I bravely hiked national parks in Utah in the September desert heat, getting lost after a 10-mile hike

and fortunately following two hikers back to the parking lot. The beauty of Utah was unforgettable, my exercise-induced endorphins gave me the best hiker’s high and I couldn’t believe I solo-hiked for a week and lived to tell the tale.

In 2021, my two-week excursion in Italy finally happened, and it far exceeded my expectations. I was immensely proud of myself for safely returning to the United States after navigating around southern Italy alone for 14 days, but I left a piece of my heart in Puglia that I’m still trying to get back.

After deciding to return to Italy again in 2022 to stave off seasonal depression, I was far more confident and comfortable as a 30-year-old woman. My travel was slower paced this time around, but it began feeling a bit lonely. Wine, pasta and stray cats were fulfilling, but not fulfilling enough.

Travel hasn’t been my priority as I’ve gotten older. At 32, I sometimes find the urge to hit the road (or air) again, but I have enriched my social and professional life, improved my mental health through years of weekly therapy and have felt less of a need to escape my daily life through trip planning and travel as I have matured and healed as an individual. As travel remains on the back burner for the time being, I am able to contently sit and reflect fondly on the experiences I have gained, the memories I have made and encourage others to follow suit.

Raffaldini created this wine as a version of the Italian wine Moscato D’asti. This is a great wine if you plan to throw a New Year’s Eve party as it pairs well with dry cheese and fruits, so it will be a perfect match with a charcuterie board. It is known for its aromatic profile of flowers. Visit: 450 Groce Road, Ronda, NC 28670

Discover the healing power of human connection.

Conversation with Your BFF

As one year ends and another is fast approaching, my friend and I were recently talking about how we feel like we’ve been in a rut for a long time, just muddling through one day to the next. Who wants to muddle through anything? I want to take each day, whatever comes, with joy. Yet, my friend and I see a lot of drudging through many days this past year, wanting 2025 to be different. So “how can I start anew each day when my life has been in a rut?” I am so glad you asked!

TOMORROW BEGINS TONIGHT

If you wait to get your day off to a good start in the morning, you may have lost a very special time that could make an impact on your day. A good day begins the night before. Trust me on this one. I think you will see I make a pretty good case.

REFLECTION ON LIFE

When you go to bed, what are the last things you do before you fall asleep? Watch the news? Listen to music? Scroll through social media? Unfortunately, none of those pre-sleep activities are going to bring much rest or a new perspective on tomorrow.

Try not being on your phone or your laptop; set aside any technology and just reflect. If you aren’t sure how to be alone with your own thoughts, ask these questions of yourself:

What happened today that I am grateful for and how can I appreciate it in my life?

What steps did I take today to move me towards my goals of being a better person or better in my job and relationships?

Are there changes that are evident to me that I need to make?

These are rather simple, no-brainer questions, but they make a connection between gratitude and self-improvement.

EVER TRY PARKING A CAR GOING 100 MPH?

Imagine being in a car going 100 MPH and trying to park it. That is essentially what you are trying to do when you bombard your brain with work and social media up to the last minute you nod off to sleep. Try for a week, two if you really want to see a difference, of no screens of any sort one hour before going to bed.

“How Can I Start Anew Each Day When I’m in a Rut?’

A GOOD DAY IS A PLANNED DAY

Long before you hit the hay, write down your three biggest to-do list items to get your momentum going the next day. Studies show that a to-do list written down, I find in an actual day timer, gets me focused in the morning. Make this list earlier in the evening, not when you tuck yourself into bed. If you wait until the morning to jot down the day’s tasks, you will get fewer tasks done and spend more time figuring out what to do.

TAKE DELIBERATE BREATHS

On average, you take 20,000 breaths per day. As I write that, I become conscious of my breathing, and it also kind of tires me out. That’s a lot of breathing.

Try this technique that I recently read about…

The 4-7-8 Technique is to breathe through your nose for four seconds, hold for seven seconds

and slowly exhale for eight seconds. Physicians say this is one of the best ways to kill stress before bed. I’ve been doing it, and it works!

READING IS STILL A GREAT WAY TO DRIFT OFF TO SLEEP

In a recent online poll, almost 90% of people say they watch videos on social media right before sleeping. This is the worst way to fall asleep, especially if you watch disturbing or scary videos.

Instead of the video approach to relaxation which doesn’t work, get a book which is known as a good way to help you naturally fall asleep. Reading relaxes your mind, improves your quality of sleep and you might learn something, too!

As you go into the new year, try preparing yourself for the next day the night before, and see if that rut you are in changes quickly.
