This month marks a special occasion in Forsyth Magazines history: the 100th issue of Forsyth Family! In some ways it seems like yesterday and in others, it seems like an eternity! In 2007, I had been publishing Forsyth Woman for about two years and knew I wanted to get a second title going. Robin Bralley was the logical choice for my business partner.

Besides being a friend I knew I could trust, she’s like the sister I never had.

We have so much in common… both have two brothers, both born in July (me on the 15th and her on the 16th) – and while I am the older sister, she is by far the wiser! But most of all, Robin embodies the very definition of family. Her world is rooted in her husband and daughters, and when Robin loves, she does so with all her heart. Robin believes there’s nothing more important than family, and moreover, she lives it. A gentle soul, she IS Forsyth Family magazine. While we co-own the magazine, she is the one in the driver’s seat, managing the day-to-day operations. When I look at where Forsyth Family started and where it is today, I’m very proud of Robin. She’s done a tremendous job.

Robin and I came into the publishing world armed with nothing but a willingness to work very hard. We both feel so blessed to have been welcomed with open arms to this incredible community we live in, and as we celebrate this special milestone, we thank you – our readers and advertisers – for enabling us to do what we have found so much joy in doing!

March also finds us in a new place… literally. We have, after years of operating from our respective home offices, moved into office space at the Historic Broyhill Center. This is an enormous change for us, especially our core team. We are very excited about the opportunity ahead. We have a dynamic team, and we work together beautifully! However, we know from team retreats and power-meetings, that when we get together, great ideas happen. I’m very excited to see what’s in store for us when we work directly with each other, day in and day out!

Glaucoma-The Silent Disease

Spring is in the air, the sun is shining, flowers are blooming and the world is a beautiful place. No one is thinking their vision or that of a loved one could be slowly slipping away. Our world is unique, with beautiful sights to behold. Dr. Khemsara, a cataract and glaucoma specialist at Summit Eye Care, spends many hours diagnosing and treating patients to preserve the precious gift of sight that allows us to enjoy children at play, the ocean waves rolling onto the beach, or a mountain view, and so much more.

It is estimated that three million Americans have deteriorating vision due to glaucoma which will eventually prevent them from beholding such sights. Only about half of them know that they have glaucoma. How can this happen? Glaucoma is a disease that can cause blindness without any symptoms, and by progressing very slowly. This is why it is known as the “Silent Disease.”

Blindness from glaucoma can often be prevented with early detection, yearly eye exams, and treatment. Treatment often comes in the form of ophthalmic eye drops, laser treatments and/or surgery for more advanced stages.

In a healthy eye, excess fluid leaves the eye through the drainage angle, keeping pressure stable.

In the healthy eye, there is a clear fluid called aqueous humor which circulates inside the front portion of your eye through a pathway called the trabecular meshwork. If you have glaucoma, the aqueous humor does not flow out of the eye properly. As this happens, your eye pressure, called intraocular pressure (IOP), rises. Measuring your IOP is the first step in determining if you may get glaucoma or if, in fact, you already have this disease.

The second step is to determine if your eye pressure has caused damage to the optic nerve fibers. The optic nerve is connected to the retina — a layer of light-sensitive tissue lining the inside of the eye — and is made up of many nerve fibers, like an electric cable is made up of many wires. The optic nerve sends signals from your retina to your brain, where these signals are interpreted as the images you see.

Raised eye pressure leads to damage of the optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve can occur at different eye pressures in different patients. There is not one ‘right’ eye pressure that is the same for everyone. Your eye care provider establishes a target eye pressure

for you that he or she predicts will protect your optic nerve from further damage.

The most common form of glaucoma is called primary open-angle glaucoma. It occurs when the trabecular meshwork of the eye gradually becomes less efficient at draining fluid. If the eye pressure is too high for you, the optic nerve becomes more damaged, and blank spots will begin to appear in your field of vision. You usually won’t notice these blank spots in your day-to-day activities until the optic nerve is significantly damaged and these spots become large.

Eye pressure is not always the same – it rises and falls from day to day and hour to hour. In addition to routine eye pressure testing, it is essential that the optic nerve be examined by an eye care professional for proper diagnosis.

Another type of glaucoma is angle-closure glaucoma. This develops when the patient’s iris is very close to the drainage angle in their eye. The iris can end up blocking the drainage angle. You can think of it like a piece of paper sliding over a sink drain. When the drainage angle gets completely blocked, eye pressure rises very quickly. This is called an acute attack.

It is a true eye emergency, and you should call your ophthalmologist right away or you might go blind.

Unfortunately, people at risk for developing closed-angle glaucoma often have few or no symptons before the attack.

People of Asian descent and those with hyperopia (farsightedness) tend to be more at risk for developing this form of glaucoma. People at risk for closed-angle glaucoma can be diagnosed and treated with a preventive laser procedure. Again, this can only be diagnosed if routine eye exams are scheduled with a trained professional. Symptoms of an acute attack include blurry vision, severe eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting and rainbow colored rings or halos around lights.

Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce Launches “Shop Local” Discount Card

Whether it’s because of pride in your community, a genuine support of a friend or family member’s business, or knowing your dollar has gone to not only a member of your community but to a business owner you trust who appreciates your business, shopping at local businesses makes each purchase extra special. To encourage people to shop local, the Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber of Commerce is introducing the “Shop Local” campaign with a very good way to encourage you to do so.

“With our ‘Shop Local’ campaign, we want to bring an awareness to what consumers can find right here in our area, the Triad and our state,” said Ginny Chase, chamber director. “We are currently selling a Shop Local Discount Card with the idea of encouraging consumers to make their purchases in local businesses. The card costs $10, features 15 area businesses and can be purchased at the chamber office in Clemmons and will be good for one year. We will have different types of businesses featured on the card.

Another component of the ‘Shop Local’ campaign is asking consumers to rethink their mindsets about Internet shopping. We really want consumers to understand the importance and impact that shopping locally has on our community.”

LOCAL FASHION ICON, BIG CITY STYLE

BY LAUREN ROBISON JONES In New York City, top designers and fresh trends are found in shop after shop down 5th Avenue. In North Carolina, that luxury is few and far between. Local fashionistas book shopping trips to the big city or follow top blogs for the latest trends to order online. But why bother when you can experience it first-hand at Nitsa’s Apparel, full of designer picks, as well as the season’s top trends, hand selected by their buyers, with the guidance of NYC’s best buying office, right here in Winston-Salem?

Working with his buying office out of NYC, George, along with his buyers, keep their ears to the ground for the latest trends coming out of the world’s fashion centers. Equipped with buying office trend reports and analysis that recaps the major fashion shows and new designers lines, George, along with Chris who oversees and manages their bridal salons in both stores, hand pick which styles will make it into the store for the season. “Many trends are happening simultaneously,” said George of his process for picking what comes to the store. “You have to be careful. Just because it’s new, doesn’t mean it’s great.” George has taken the time to get to know his WinstonSalem and Charlotte customers. Through the years, he’s studied what sells and what doesn’t, what he sees on the street and what is only meant for the runway.

This spring, George says the mantra of the fashion world is currently, “everything old is new again.” Re-imagined styles of the ‘70s are hitting the shelves, including wide-leg and bell-bottom pants, loose silhouettes and loud prints. Other burgeoning trends you’ll find on Nitsa’s racks include a lot of asymmetrical designs, off-the-shoulder blouses and details like cording and sashes. He expects the popular trend in sheer fabrics to continue, and it has manifested itself not only into formal and bridal wear but into sportswear and casual styles, as well. This feminine accent will be adding a soft touch to another of this year’s top design genres -- utility.

While George does enjoy trends and going to market to shop for product, it’s the details of retail that really catch his attention. “Fabrics fascinate me,” said George as he discussed the immense improvements in fabric technology, including sweat and heat wicking fabric found in some of the store’s products. “It’s amazing what designers can do

with clothing these days.” Lighting is another aspect of retail that George has studied up on and implemented into the store’s newly remodeled space. “These are all LED lights,” he said pointing up to the boutique’s ceiling, where all-new recessed lighting has been installed.

He goes on to excitedly explain in detail the benefits of his decision to use this lighting, as it gives a maximum number of lumens to ensure the best “true light rendition” for clothing.

Joking as he finishes his technical explanation, he remarks, “I’ve been in this business too long, right?”

But it seems he’s been in the business for a perfect amount of time and has the success to show it. The Bambalis family, which has a history of successful businesses in Winston-Salem (they also own the popular bar, Recreation Billiards, and its hidden, downstairs speakeasy, the WhiskyBox, on Fourth Street, above which

Nitsa’s began), has also found success in the Charlotte market with Nitsa’s Phillips Place location since 2003. The Winston-Salem store, remodeled in 2015, showcases the business’ commitment to providing the best for its customers. “It exudes warmth and intimacy,” said George of the new details, including rustic wood floors and warm, peaceful colors throughout the casual sportswear section.

Piedmont Federal Savings Bank – New Innovations

BY VONDA HENDERSON Piedmont Federal Savings Bank is launching customer-friendly innovations to make banking simpler to manage, banking service information easier to find and to provide greater security to its customers. As Ginger Salt, vice president of marketing and business development, said, “Piedmont Federal is committed to customer-centric technology -things that benefit our customers and make banking easier and safer. Piedmont considers technology from the eyes of the customer.”

How are they doing all this?

Several innovations have been developed, vetted, tested and are now ready to roll out to Piedmont Federal customers. A great deal of testing has occurred to ensure that these tools are user-friendly and function well with minimal effort.

Included are:

RE-ISSUED DEBIT CARDS Beginning this year, debit cards will be reissued as EMV chip cards (with embedded microchip technology). EMV stands for Europay MasterCard Visa (representing the three companies that originally invented the standard). The purpose for this change is to help prevent the creation of counterfeit cards when a debit card is presented manually for payment.

We can relate to the feeling of uneasiness when someone takes our debit card, and it seems to take more time than expected to pay. Nearly half the fraud events occur using the data strip on the back of current debit cards.

The magnetic strip cards currently in use contain a static code that doesn’t change. Once the information is obtained, it can be used over and over again to create counterfeit cards until the fraudulent activity is noticed and the card is canceled. The microchip card will generate a one-time use code that prevents the creation of a counterfeit card. The one-time code changes with every transaction, so it cannot be duplicated.

Debit cards will be re-issued in a phased approach depending on when your card expires and other factors.

The new card readers used by vendors will be able to accept the current card style in the interim.

ENHANCED WEBSITE

The current website has been enhanced and will go live on February 29, 2016. New features include easier navigation (as a section is selected, the information options are shown at a glance versus using a dropdown box format), printable product brochures, multiple contact options and an enhanced security section. A oneminute preview of the new website will be available soon. Loan rates, deposit rates, product comparisons -- all will be available to make it easy to select the best option for your financial situation.

The website also includes information about Piedmont Federal’s community involvement and opportunities for customers to participate. Coming up in April will be the Artizens event that showcases young artists from local high school art departments.

In 2015, 84 selections were displayed at Piedmont Federal branches and the Gala Awards Event. Also in April, the Kernersville and Boone branches will host shred events. While the shred service is free, donations are welcome and will benefit local charitable organizations.

Piedmont Federal is proud of its heritage and its place in the development of the region. One section of the website is devoted to capturing that history as Piedmont Federal continues to evolve and encourage the on-going success of the communities and customers it supports.

Community Care Center: Over 16,000 Patient Visits – Each With a Story

When she got laid off from her job, Donna Reynolds Farrar struggled with the expenses of everyday living, including significant healthcare costs. “I am not old enough to receive Medicare and I do not have a debilitating health issue that would qualify me for Medicaid,” she said. “I fell through the cracks and, without the Community Care Center, I would not have been able to take care of my medical needs.”

The Community Care Center’s mission is to provide compassionate, high-quality healthcare services to the medically uninsured and underserved who reside in Forsyth, Stokes or Davie counties. Opening in Winston-Salem in 2000, it raised the bar for all free medical clinics in the state. There is no other clinic in North Carolina that is as large, serves as many patients, or provides as broad a scope of services. Most of the Community Care Center’s patients have chronic illnesses and the care they receive is necessary to allow them to work or to care for their families. The Center’s impact is enormous; the average patient receives $440 worth of free medications per visit and the Center had 16,480 patient visits in 2015.

Donna Farrar came to the Community Care Center for treatment for her diabetes, dermatitis, and to obtain other medications. Her diabetes is now well-controlled. From the health education Donna received, she stopped drinking sodas, started walking every day, and began reading food labels to make healthier choices. These changes have improved Donna’s health and her outlook on life.

Jim Robinson, one of the founders of the Community Care Center, says that healthcare costs are a threat to people’s financial stability, security and well-being. “The leading cause of personal bankruptcy in America is medical

expenses,” said Jim. “Once you free people from the heavy burdens of healthcare costs – both emotionally and financially – it is amazing to see what they can do.”

In Donna Farrar’s case, removing the burden of healthcare costs opened the door to furthering her education, leading her to a job as a paralegal. She is currently employed and is continuing her education in criminal justice at Forsyth Technical Community College, with hopes to work in a law office one day. She is also now a member of the Community Care Center’s board of directors, helping to advocate for those that were once in her position. Donna is one story among many of the lives that are being changed through the work of the doctors, volunteers, and donors of the Community Care Center.

Running NC’s largest free medical clinic requires the support of hundreds of volunteers. Medical and dental professionals and interpreters are important, but there are many ways to help.

Here are a few ways you can get involved: • Your family, club, or church group can provide a meal for evening clinic volunteers once a quarter.

• Your scout troop, Sunday school class or office group can collect items such as dental floss and toothbrushes to provide home care kits to patients through the dental clinic.

• You can help with office work, answer the phone, or prepare mailings.

• Donations are always important and are very appreciated, too!

Saddle Up Anyway

We struggle to define this intangible. One thing’s for certain, we recognize it when we see it. “Guts-and-glory” screen icon, John Wayne, described courage as “being scared to death and saddling up anyway.”

Speaking of being scared to death…

Her name was Carolyn. (Don’t let the sweet name fool you.) We attended daycare together during elementary summers. With tangled locks and tough talk, Carolyn strutted, flaunting a fierce exterior.

She and I weren’t friends. We weren’t enemies, either.

We simply ran in different circles in daycare high-society.

For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out what tripped her trigger.

Believe it or not, I still don’t know. This I did know, one sultry afternoon, my life hanged in the balance.

Without warning, she charged at me with fire in her eyes. Her spit-spewed rant shined my cheeks. I feared her glare more than the germs, so I stood motionless as this burly-faced bully scheduled a showdown. Spittle trickled down my face while chills ran up my spine.

The daycare buzzed all about the impending beat down. Even my “friends” taunted, “Carolyn is going to hurt you bad.”

Here’s the secret: I did not know how to fight. AT. ALL. Sure, I wrestled my brothers, but Mama usually snatched me from death’s claws just in time. How could I face this beast?

The dreadful day arrived. Chatter erupted everywhere I walked.

At lunch, I slouched in my chair, too petrified to eat. Afterward, I slowly scaled the stairs toward the makeshift boxing ring built with blankets. The roars from elementary upperclassmen intensified as my trembling self inched closer. I turned the corner, and there she stood, drenched in sweat with garbled grumblings and clenched fists.

I don’t know that I’ve ever been so afraid in my life. With absolutely no possibility of escape, I devised a makeshift plan -- bolt into the ring, close your eyes and keep punching with all you’ve got. It’s “punch to the death, or be punched to death.”

Downright mortified, I mustered the courage to step onto the blanket. The swinging commenced! Shrill cheers pierced the air.

I just kept punching.

Then, after several whacks clobbering nothing but air, I sheepishly opened my eyes, certain the next punch would knock me out cold. But…but…shock and awe! The bully bit the dust!

This weakling actually slayed the giant. Oh, yes I did!

Wait a minute. You mean to tell me, this beast trapped people by sheer intimidation, not actual strength? Her arsenal consisted merely of mouthy weapons that only deflate and discourage with no real muscle to destroy?

All that time, daycare commoners feared a giant having only the façade of power. Courage -- to saddle up in spite of bone-chilling dread -- exposed the imposter, once and for all.

What terrifies you? What keeps you awake at night? Hear me.

Courage is not a genetic predisposition. The more we stare down the things that seek to intimidate us, the more we develop the muscles of courage. Better yet, we never need to stand alone in the showdown.

The One with ALL power -- REAL power -- has something to say about your predicament. He knows the enemy’s bark is so much bigger than his bite. The One who made you for greatness whispers to your heart right where you stand today. “Be strong and courageous! Do not be terrified or intimidated, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9) Stop and let this truth settle deep into your soul. Let His promise wrap around you like a warm blanket.

Facing our fears becomes habitual as we steep our lives in the God who never bails when the going gets tough. This daring boldness exposes the cowardice façade of the giants that seek to control us.

Are you scared to death? Take it from John Wayne (and God): “Saddle up anyway!”

It may sound strange, but this month, I had the pleasure of dining at Muddy Creek Café at the Bethania Mill, and it was phenomenal. It was so good that one of my guests actually wanted to hug the owner! While I was in the dark about how great Owner Shana Whitehead’s creations are, turns out I may have been one of the only ones. As we were leaving, a crowd of people arrived, and instantly, the dining room and patio were filling up.

When we walked in, we were greeted by several smiling faces and encouraged to try whatever we wanted. Shana recommended a few dishes that all sounded amazing, so with a couple additions, we were all set!

New South Pimento – Homemade pimento cheese grilled on Panini bread. I added the spicy bacon and tomato which made a delicious sandwich even more delectable! I do not like spicy food, but this bacon basically just warmed my mouth, and enhanced the flavor of the pimento cheese… no overwhelming spice at all! I had fruit as my side, and I was so pleasantly surprised to see REAL fruit in the cup!

Normally, you are stuck with a bunch of melon that looks like it’s been sitting in a bowl for a week with maybe one or two grapes. Not at Muddy Creek Café. The fruit included blackberries, pineapple, grapes and watermelon – yum!

The Lusty Muffaletta – Salami, ham, provolone, mozzarella and homemade olive mix on a ciabatta roll. Shana said she traveled to New Orleans and tried one of these famous sandwiches thinking it was something she might want to offer on the menu. This was the sandwich that had one of my dining guests wanting to hug her! The olive mix was absolute perfection…and every flavor combined impeccably to create the best muffaletta sandwich he could imagine. New Orleans has nothing on Muddy Creek Café!

Classic Corned Beef Reuben – Lean corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and homemade Thousand Island dressing on grilled rye bread. The corned beef was tender and juicy...no need to wait for St. Patrick’s Day when you can have this famous creation whenever your heart desires at Muddy Creek Café. We tried the pasta salad with this, and it was a great accompaniment, as all the sides were!

Cup of 7-Bean Soup – Yum! Whether warm or cold outside (and who can ever tell these days?), this soup delivers! Flavorful, comforting, yet light, this soup makes for a great appetizer.

Boylan Orange Soda – Ever tried a Boylan Bottling Company soda? If not, you must! Made with cane sugar, these sodas don’t leave you feeling guilty afterwards…and they come in glass bottles. I felt like I was back in the fifties, enjoying a delicious soda and mouthwatering sandwich at my favorite local diner.

Krankie’s Coffee – Several restaurants in Winston-Salem serve Krankie’s coffee, but lately, it seems that to get this coffee, you have to go to expensive places or places closer to downtown where Krankie’s is located. Not anymore! Muddy Creek Café serves Krankie’s hot and fresh every day, and it is such a treat for those looking for quality coffee any time of day!

Homemade Sweet Tea – Whether sweetened or not, Muddy Creek Café’s homemade tea reminds you that you are in the south…and why would we live anywhere else?

This meal was remarkable! You never think that a seemingly simply sandwich restaurant is going to knock your socks off, but Muddy Creek Café will! Shana and her staff truly have a special thing going, and you are doing yourself a major disservice if you do not let her prove to you how satisfying sandwiches can be. Dream Kitchens Delight During the snow days at home recently, I realized that my kitchen is a great place to be. It delights the eye and engages the senses. Just puttering around the home, cleaning up, chopping vegetables, and cooking casseroles can be rewarding if you love what you do.

My own kitchen is a dream kitchen and because I am rarely home to enjoy cooking, I discovered that design pays off. Kitchens are unique spaces. They have a hard job to do and they have to look good while doing it. That is why when you plan your kitchen remodel or new construction, outfitting it is never cut and dry. Homewatch CareGivers of the Triad -- Meeting Your Homecare Needs

BY SUSAN WOODALL As family members age, we begin to see changes in their abilities to take care of themselves from simple to more complicated tasks. We know eventually they will need additional care that family or professionals will need to provide, but who do you call when that time comes? The answer is Homewatch CareGivers of the Triad. But, what if the help needed is for someone with a chronic illness, developmental disability, injury or other issue where a home caregiver is needed? Again, the answer is Homewatch CareGivers.

Family owned and operated for more than 10 years, Homewatch CareGivers offers a variety of services that complement the family member’s need for independence and quality of life. The first step in achieving that goal is to match a caregiver or caregivers to the client. “We get to know our clients and their needs,” said Owner Marti Dizon. “As an extension of the family, it is important that the caregiver we place has a good rapport with the person he or she is there to help.”

When contacted, Homewatch CareGivers discusses the person’s needs and schedules a free evaluation that is conducted by a registered nurse. It is then determined if the services they provide are in line with the client’s needs. It is important to note if your situation calls for home healthcare that is different from simple homecare as healthcare requires skilled nursing. However, homecare does work in conjunction with home healthcare to establish a circle of support.

The nurse will also conduct a fall-risk assessment of the home. This information is used to create a personalized care plan and begin the caregiver-matching process. The Millennial Generation: Who are They? Should You Hire Them?

A few weeks ago, I read an extremely interesting LinkedIn article on the Millennial Generation. (If you’d like to read it, it’s called “Millennials Don’t Want Work Life Balance” by Jones Loflin.) It has helped me realize—and accept that it is OK—that my view on work and personal life is different than my mother’s (aka my boss). Before I get into the Millennial work life balance, I want to give you a bit of Millennial 101.

I had the privilege of listening to Daniel Pugh speak on the Millennial generation a couple of weeks ago at a Lewisville-Clemmons Chamber meeting. He had some terrific insights on this group, and here are a couple of my favorites.

First and foremost, Millennial’s ARE hard workers. We work in a different way than previous generations, but we have quite the work ethic and are no less productive than any previous generation. Second, our moms told us that we were special.

A lot. While this second one is kind of a joke… if you were born between 1980 and 2000… you know it’s true! Thanks, Mom, for telling me I was special an infinite amount of times while I was growing up. I didn’t realize it then, but now I know that it helped instill my work ethic, perseverance and overall optimistic approach to life.

I was born in 1990 and am smack dab in the middle of the millennial generation. Millennials were born between 1980 and 2000. While we are very hard workers, we do crave a healthy balance between work and our personal lives. Unlike previous generations, we aren’t going to save up our vacation days for 25 years…we’re going to use them!

However, we don’t mind these vacation days having a bit of work mixed in. I don’t think twice about bringing my laptop to the beach and checking in on my emails a few times each day.

I’m also capable of working at home; it’s not uncommon for me to do a load of laundry, check and respond to 20 emails, go work out, eat breakfast and straighten up my kitchen all before 8:30 a.m. The Millennial generation is flexible and extremely productive.

Growing up with two entrepreneurs as parents instilled quite a work ethic in my younger brother and me; the word “relax” just isn’t in their vocabulary. We affectionately refer to them both as “work-a-holics.” I used to get frustrated with them for working so much, but recently I’ve stepped back and realized two things. One—they both own their own businesses and LOVE what they do, so in a sense (especially for my mother), it’s not “work.” Two—they are in the baby boomer generation and were raised to be hard workers. You work hard so that you can retire some day and RELAX. (Although, I honestly can’t imagine that day… maybe they’ll have some grandbabies to keep them busy?)

After working with my mother for a little over 3 years now, we’ve come to learn each other’s working habits. My mom respects my decision to take off to the beach for a long weekend with my husband… or to go have a massage or get a pedicure….because she knows I’ll be more productive (and happy!) in the long run if I take time for myself. In my opinion, it is irrelevant if you work 60 hours a week or 30…it’s how productive you are during those hours. If you have an unhappy employee working a typical 40 hour week (M-F 8-5), I would be willing to bet that they are less productive than a happy employee who has a more flexible schedule and is able to take time for themselves when needed. And that’s what every employer would like, right? Happy employees who get their work done! So, yes – Millennials are hard workers and you SHOULD hire them!

The Members of Home Moravian Church Prepare the Big Breakfast

BY DICK JOYCE There are many traditions in the Salem Congregation of the Moravian Church.

One of those traditions, the Easter Band Breakfast, dates to 1880. According to archived documents, that year Mr. and Mrs. William H. Hall of Main Street served ham and eggs to the Moravian Easter Band after they had made their “rounds” on a cold, rainy night. The rounds (playing on street corners to awaken the community to a prelude for the Easter Sunrise Service) had started at 2 am and ended in Salem in preparation for the Easter Sunrise Service.

That tradition continues today as Moravian church bands from the Salem Congregation’s 13 churches, as well as others from around the state, play throughout the city, gather in Old Salem, and are served Easter Breakfast by members of Home Moravian Church in their fellowship hall. The Women’s Auxiliary of Home Moravian took responsibility for this meal in 1928 and Home Moravian Church has been coordinating it since. This year marks the 147th breakfast.

Camille Disher McDowell has the responsibility of helping to provide leadership to put on this large meal. “We’ll feed close to a thousand people in several shifts, starting at 11:30 pm and ending an hour before the service starts,” says McDowell, who has been a part of the “team” for over 30 years. She began as a server at age 18 and was “promoted” about ten years ago to the kitchen. It is a daunting task, involving lots of detailed planning that begins the Thursday after Ash Wednesday. Countless phone calls and emails recruit volunteers and gather supplies. The supplies required to make this event successful begin with 90 dozen eggs, 120 pounds of country ham, 900 biscuits, 960 pieces of Moravian Sugar Cake baked by Winkler’s Bakery, 30 gallons of orange juice, and GALLONS of coffee! Most of the coffee will be made “love feast style,” using of 16 quarts of milk, 13 quarts of half & half, 36 pounds of coffee, and 30 pounds of sugar. But the biggest ingredient is LOVE. The small group of women pictured gather in the church kitchen on Good Friday in organized chaos.

The dining room, which is the Fellowship Hall, begins its transformation. As the salt and pepper shakers are filled, silverware counted, serving bowls, platters, and coffee mugs gathered, preparation for Easter Breakfast is well underway. After a short break for lunch, shared with the presiding minister, the final task begins, trimming the 120 pounds of ham and getting it

into the proper containers for each meal served.

Everything is checked and rechecked. As the table numbers are placed on the tables, the realization comes that the work here for these dedicated women has been accomplished.

On Easter eve, the smell of country ham cooked

by McDowell’s husband, Andy, and daughter, Cate, begins to fill the evening air around 10 PM. “Our first breakfast at 11:30 is for the 15 kitchen workers - five of whom are members of my family. We then move swiftly on to the breakfast for the police. Biscuits for band rounds, scouts, and ushers are assembled and distributed to their assigned areas. Communication workers, EMS volunteers and the 75 volunteers for ‘the Big Breakfast’ arrive in the predawn hours ready to be fed”, says McDowell. Finally, the much anticipated moment arrives. Moravian bands from all over the state begin to file in, filling the tables so lovingly set days before. After the presiding minister offers a simple prayer, platters of ham and piping hot bowls of eggs appear from the kitchen, followed by the large tin coffee pots filled with either love feast or black coffee to be distributed among the hungry band members.

This year’s meal will help launch the 244th consecutive Moravian Easter Sunrise Service. The 2016 service will be held Easter Sunday, March 27, 2016. Worshippers will gather at in Salem Square in front of Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St, in Old Salem. The service will begin at 6:30 am as the Rev. Joe Moore, Chair of the Elders of the Salem Congregation and Co-Pastor of Fries Memorial Moravian Church, proclaims “The Lord is Risen!” Then the congregation moves in reverent procession to God’s Acre as worship continues. Here the service concludes.

All is well with the band members, as they have supported the hymns being sung during the service and participated in the antiphonal orchestra during the procession. They have added to the spiritual ambiance for an extremely worship-filled experience. As many head home to catch a quick nap before attending worship in their churches, they will reflect on the fellowship and joy shared with many, whether it was playing in the band or sharing a meal with church family for another Easter. Camille Disher McDowell, her dedicated family, and volunteers have been extremely busy in their efforts to orchestrate this large “family” meal. The members of Home Moravian Church will get to rest for almost another year before being called back into action to do it once more. We are thankful for their contributions of time and talent that allow for this tradition to continue.

Date Night on a Budget: Spring Edition

Spring is upon us! We may happily look forward to longer days, lovely weather and blooming plants and flowers! There is something about this time of year that breathes spirit, energy and life into most of us. Historically, spring was once considered a rebirth of the earth itself. All of this leads to the urge to get out in that beautiful sunshine and enjoy nature at its finest! Who is the first person with whom you should opt to enjoy this time? Your spouse or partner, of course. After being cooped up indoors for so long, it is refreshing to spend time together in the great outdoors!

Fruit and Frolic - Visit a local apple orchard or find a locale to pick berries. Freshly grown fruit, sunshine and congenial companionship can make this a lovely date.

Date night is important for any couple, whether you have been together a month or 50 years. During the rat race of everyday life, it can be easy to let that important aspect take a back burner to careers, children, extended family, etc. When you are on a fixed budget, it can be even more difficult.

Thankfully, dating your sweetheart does not have to cost a bundle or break your bank account. Trash to Treasure - Visit a local flea market, and find something to restore together. You will have a lovely memento for your home to remember your date.

This is a wonderful time of year for dating as so many possibilities open up with the mild weather! Simply taking a walk around your neighborhood is a nice change from the cold months recently endured. Fiber-rich whole grains are a vital part of the Mediterranean diet, which is loaded with fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, olive oil, and wine. Research out of Columbia University Medical Center in New York City shows that the Mediterranean diet may be linked to a lower risk of mild cognitive impairment (which can progress to Alzheimer’s).

Don’t forget about chocolate!

Surprisingly, the sweet many try to eliminate from their diets may be the one that can help with brain function! Dark chocolate has flavonols, which can improve blood vessel function. In the end, this can improve cognitive function and memory. Chocolate also improves mood, can ease pain, and is full of antioxidants. Enjoy!

If Windows Could Talk

“Windows play a critical role in the three most important aspects of home design. First, the appearance……windows are the most significant factor influencing how the house looks to the outside world. Second, windows capture views and the natural world beyond. Last, they let in light and air and protect against extreme weather.” ~ Duo Dickinson If windows could talk, they would probably say, “Put some thought into how you choose to dress me.”

Where do you start? In planning window treatments for a room, consider the function of your room. Is privacy needed? How much natural light do you want to allow into the room? Will the window treatments need to be functional or just decorative?

Once that’s determined it’s time to decide on style, fabrics or materials, and hardware for your window treatment.

What fabric or color? Let your wall color and upholstered pieces help you decide. If your upholstered pieces or bedding are a bold pattern, then use a small print or solid. If they are a solid color, a large patterned fabric for your drapes will look nice. Matching the fabric to the wall color or going a few shades darker is a safe choice.

What style?

• Drapes with pleats can be formal or casual, depending on the fabric used and the style of the pleat.

• Tab-top heading is more casual.

• Tie-top is feminine or romantic.

• Sheared on the rod is casual and not good if you want to open and close the drapes because of the difficulty in sliding them.

• Grommets give a clean, modern, and sometimes masculine feel.

• Roman shades, woven woods, shades, and plantation shutters are simple and more informal.

• A combination of blinds, shades, or shutters with fabric drapery panels can be a beautiful look.

What length do the drapes need to be? Drapes should just skim the floor. I subtract ½” from the measurement (from where the drape will attach to the rod to floor).

What width? I usually add 4” to 6”on both sides of the window for drapery panels in order to allow extra light to stream into the room when the curtains are open. Measure the window (add the 4” to 6” on each side) and multiply by 2 to 2 ½ times the width of the window to figure out how many panels (approximately 50 to 55” wide) are needed for the window. Usually two panels are needed for a single window.

Where does the rod need to be mounted? To elongate the look of the windows and make the ceiling appear raised, hang the rod higher than the window molding. My rule of thumb (these rules are just guidelines): measure from the bottom of the ceiling molding to the top of the window molding and divide that measurement into 1/3s. Hang in the top or bottom 1/3. If you have a cathedral ceiling, then measure from an imaginary 9’ ceiling to the top of window molding.

What style of rod do you purchase? The rod should complement your style of décor. My rule of thumb is that if the fabric is plain, then a more decorative finial may be used; if fabric has a large or bold pattern, then use a simple finial.

What are your windows saying? The way you dress your windows makes a big difference in the way a room looks and feels. The decision can be challenging and is a major investment.

We’ve always said a jacket or a blazer are an easy way to put a stylish outfit together with minimal effort. You can look pulled together with simple pieces such as a chambray shirt and jeans. Look at this example. They aren’t uniquely stylish pieces. In fact, they are basics, but the blazer takes the look to the next level.

Do you know someone who always seems to look put together? Maybe she doesn’t even have outfits that you think are over the top. They may even be quite simple, but she still looks good. Have you ever stopped to think about why it is that she looks this way?

Our guess is that she probably always has a “third piece.” What do we mean by this? We mean that, in addition to wearing your top and bottom, and not including your shoes, you add a third piece. It can be anything from a jacket, blazer, sweater or vest, to some type of statement accessory. What is it about this piece that makes such a difference? It’s just a simple way to make an ordinary outfit look a little more polished, put together, and just generally more interesting. If you don’t

and with short sleeves during warmer temperatures. Here, a simple striped dress is certainly cute by itself, but the vest makes the look seem more interesting. (Yes, we know the dress is only a single piece, so the vest is technically not a third piece in this example, but we can say that the dress counts as both a top and bottom.)

Just like above with the jacket and blazer, a sweater can achieve the same goal. What’s nice about a sweater is that it can take you into the spring and summer, especially if you have a short sleeved or ¾ sleeved version, in addition to a long-sleeved one.

If you aren’t interested in adding a layer to a piece of clothing, then try it with some accessories. A necklace can add a simple pop of color to a shirt and makes all the difference in the world. Or try a scarf. They aren’t just for winter anymore. We love the fresh look of a floral print scarf. It’s right on trend with the floral prints that are being shown but is so much easier to wear than a printed top or pants.

Vests have been big in fall and will continue to trend in spring. This is great because you can wear the same vest with a long sleeved shirt in colder weather

From Home to Office

Our team is dozens strong, but our core team of five collectively has 50+ years of work-at-home experience. Working from home requires an exceptional amount of self-discipline and self-motivation. It’s not easy to perfect since working at home means 1) you’re surrounded by distractions, and 2) you never leave work. Striking a work-life balance can be a challenge. However, we have exchanged the complexities of working at home for the benefit of working in one’s pajamas.

And we’ve thought we’ve done it pretty well! Since we’re all well-seasoned in work-from-home life, we have been content with constant emails, phone calls, text messages and the occasional in-person meeting. We’ve talked about moving into an office, but it seemed silly since we all had established home offices.

However, a recent opportunity presented itself -- office space at the Historic Broyhill in Clemmons. With an office suite that perfectly met our needs -- we took the tour on a Friday and, on the following Monday, we started moving in. To say our team moves fast is an understatement!

As I write this, we are four days into our new work environment and, overall, we all wonder why we didn’t make this decision years ago! It’s so nice to simply ask a question and share information rather than send a message and wait for feedback.

Of course, there’s a learning curve. For myself, who is used to working in complete silence, I am learning to tune out other conversations; and my teammates are learning to overlook the fact that I type very loudly. We are in a learning curve with each other, but the benefits have been tremendous already.

We are excited to decorate our space and make it our own and, hopefully, in a few months, host a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate that after 10+ years in business, Forsyth Magazines finally has an office! And, who knows? We may designate one day a month as pajama day (just kidding)!

At the ripe old age of 28, entrepreneur Chris Eagle is celebrating the 10th anniversary of owning his own business.

BY DAVE MCCONNELL Oh, My Aching Back!

Generally, I like to write my articles on health and fitness issues based on my 35 years of personal experiences. When it comes to back pain, I have had my share. It started in my mid-20s with a sudden twist of my upper body that took me to my knees. Several days of rest and moving gingerly, and I was back to my old self. The problem is that I paid little attention to a long-term solution. Sure, rest and anti-inflammatories will generally get you back on your feet, but if you’re like me the injury will eventually return. As I aged, the occurrences were not only more frequent, but more severe and debilitating. After decades of chronic pain, I finally decided to get serious about my back issues.

For all of my adult life I have been an avid exerciser. I started weight training in high school and have continued a regimented, three-times-a-week program. After college, in an effort to get rid of some post-athletic weight I had gained, I started running. Since we are all limited to the amount of time we can spend exercising, this seemed to be the perfect fit for my health needs. Then came the back issues.

I’ve never been one to get medical advice for what I consider minor health issues and, in my mind, a pulled muscle in the back seems to be in the “minor” category. So every few months when my back went out (this being the diagnosis I had heard all my life), I would gingerly tiptoe through life, knowing in a few days I would be back to my normal self.

But as previously mentioned, the occurrences became more often and the recovery time lasted longer. I realized I had a chronic problem that was not going to get better until I physically took the time to make it better.

My first step was realizing I needed to implement a flexibility program into my workout routine. For someone that’s been involved in fitness for over 30 years, you would think stretching would have been part of my regimen, but it wasn’t. I might occasionally take a few minutes at the end of a workout to reach for my toes or swing my arms around, and I somehow convinced myself that I had stretched out. Of course, my back always reminded me I was not doing enough!

Since I started personal training seven years ago, I’ve realized that my knowledge of fitness needed to expand from that of training young athletes, to training all ages and many different types of fitness-related injuries. Through my studies, clients and my personal program, I have found three steps that can greatly reduce the muscle pulls or strains one gets in the lower back.

My first point of emphasis is daily stretching. The most important muscles are the hamstrings. Obviously stretching muscles over the entire body is great for injury prevention, but for lower back pulls, the key for me was the hamstring muscles. There are numerous ways to stretch your hamstring muscles, but sitting on the floor with legs in a V and going down to each foot and then to the middle works the

hamstring and lower back. This should be done while gradually reaching farther and farther, then getting a good 20-30 second hold. For someone with back issues, I would recommend doing this twice a day.

The second point of emphasis is a strong core. Even for someone that doesn’t really exercise, it doesn’t take a lot of time, space, or cost to work the abs and do some stretching. The ab work that I’ve had success with revolves around getting your back muscles to work in conjunction with your core work. One exercise is to bend knees and elbows slightly while holding a light weight, and slowly going up and down (keep weight about six inches above head). The back should remain flat while the abs and back muscles (not the arms) lift the weight. Not only do I do this as an exercise, but I have made it a habit to contract my abs anytime I pick up something.

Finally, and probably the hardest to uphold, is to try and keep stress at a minimum in our lives. It’s hard to put a finger on the negative effects stress has on our health.

But one thing for certain is that stress causes tension, which causes our muscular system to tighten up, and one wrong move and there goes the back. How to reduce stress is a whole other conversation, but when the stress mounts, make sure you do extra stretching and be aware of your body when doing tasks that can lead to back issues.

If you are currently having back spasms and strains, I encourage you to try these simple steps. I can honestly say, as a person who had chronic issues, I have been pain free for over five years!

Re-Growing and Cloning Your Favorite Vegetables

The idea of serving a meal with fresh vegetables appeals to all of us. In carefully selecting produce, we check the appearance to ensure signs of health and firmness; yet, rinsing and scrubbing is not enough to rid our bodies from pesticides. (Did you know the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has discovered traces of 29 different pesticides in our bodies?) There is even a better alternative to paying almost 50 percent more for organic labeling.

Instead of discarding the bottom of a rooted vegetable, try placing it in a small bowl or glass jar. After one week of waiting patiently, the roots of lettuce, celery, carrots, green onions, and many more vegetables will be ready to be planted in your garden with very little effort.

Containers Before you create the visual of your kitchen window cluttered with glass jars, allow me to ease your mind. The size of the container should be relative to the food you are growing. For instance, lettuce and celery will flourish in shallow bowls, while green onions and other similar-shaped vegetables can be placed in tall, thin glasses.

In addition, • In choosing the best pesticide-free vegetables to “re-grow,” start with organic.

• Insert a sandwich bag into your container prior to adding your vegetables. It will protect the container and ease the transition from water to soil.

• Several plants of the same variety can be placed together; however, be aware, separating each individual root system is a fragile job.

The Process For generations, families have essentially used what is now termed “kitchen scraps” and “upcycled” remnants for food.

The following tips will help you to be successful; however, heed the time of year vegetables thrive in the ground (see chart); otherwise, your plants should remain in water or in a small pot in your kitchen window. Yes, that is possible (for “cuttings” only).

• Green or spring onions, fennel, leeks: Cut a few inches above the meat and low to the stock; then, in a pint-size jar, fill with water well below the top of the plant. With daily water changes, you will notice growth developing after three to five days. Plant in soil.

• Celery, cabbage, lettuce: Cut inches from the celery, cabbage, or lettuce bottom and submerge only the roots in a small bowl of water. New growth will appear in the center after a few days. Spray the plant with a water bottle every other day, and replace the water every two to three days. Plant when the leaves will not touch the soil’s surface.

• Onion: Cut off the bottom as per usual, and place it in a small pot with soil. After the new onions appear, you might need to separate the trio and plant individually.

• Garlic: In re-growing garlic, a sizeable clove will provide a large bulb; therefore, maintain moist soil for the bulb to grow. It will do well sitting in your kitchen window and receiving ample sunlight. When the bottom leaves have yellowed, the garlic will be ready to harvest.

• Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes: Once eyes begin to develop on potatoes or sweet potatoes, it is time to “upcycle.” (Store in a warm dry place two weeks prior to planting.) Cut the potato in half, then cut chunks with at least two eyes, called buds. Depending on the size of the potato, you could have four to six “cubes” ready to plant. (Place cubes in an eight-inch hole and 12 inches apart.)

• Pineapple: With the leafy top of a pineapple, carefully remove the bottom until roots appear. Place it in a wide glass of water for about two weeks (check water levels daily); then, transfer the plant to a pot. While growth will be evident after the first two months, it will take up to three years to grow one pineapple.

Cloning Your Garden The most delicious fruits and vegetables come first from the vessel, a healthy tree or plant. It makes sense to surround the vessel’s roots with quality mineral-enriched compost.

Have you ever thought about planting the seed from fruits or limbs from tomato plants and basil leaves, for instance, to clone an actual plant or tree? Re-growing or cloning food is possible with just a little tender care, water, attention, the right container and love. Yes!

Even though it’s already March, it’s never too late to begin! When reading my question, you may have wondered what the heck a Marketing Campaign Calendar is! You may have heard of Marketing Plans, but Campaign Calendars? The Calendar I am referring to is your plan, or roadmap, of how you will market your business each month.

Many businesses build sales or promotions around the major holidays or seasons in our lives. But sometimes, the best way to create a buzz is to step outside of the norm and create momentum out of something random.

For instance, did you know that Friday, March 4th is National Employee Appreciation Day? Or that March 29th would be a great day to host an event in your store to celebrate National Mom and Pop Business Owner’s Day? Any business that desires to grow in 2016 needs to create a Calendar of events they would like to promote or celebrate. But most importantly, they need to use the Calendar to plan ahead!! Deciding on January 29th to host a Groundhog’s Day contest will lead to a great deal of unneeded stress trying to pull something together at the last minute. Here are some of the suggestions we have included for the remainder of the year: • May is National Photograph Month.

Build a contest on social media around taking photographs using your products or services. Or even have people submit photos of their mothers. Through a random drawing, choose three moms and send them a dozen roses.

• June 8th is National Best Friends Day. Get creative as to how you can celebrate this event. If you own a retail shop, offer a discount for best friends that shop together. If you own a spa, offer two for one specials for clients to enjoy with their best friends.

• July 17th is National Ice Cream Day. Everyone loves ice cream in the heat of summer! Host a fun social ice cream event and offer a special deal to anyone who attends.

• August 26th is National Dog Day. Invite your employees and clients to bring their pups to the office for a few hours. Have fun puppy games and homemade dog treats to make the dogs feel special. We all know that a dog person is happy when their pup is happy.

Would a Change Really Do You Good?

“A change would do you good.” Most of us have been told this sometime in our lives and have pondered its truth. Maybe we need a vacation for a change of scenery; maybe we need a new job with a change in co-workers; or maybe we need to slow down for a change of pace in our busy lives. Change is inevitable, but is it always good? In relationships, changes inevitably occur. Some just happen subconsciously, while others are intentional choices designed to make our partner or partnership happier or stronger, and sometimes less confrontational. These changes can be subtle at first. One person adopts the other’s TV habits, or exercise schedule, or sports team, or proclaims that sushi is now their favorite food (just like their partner – what a surprise). Many of these changes bring value and enjoyment to the relationship by exposing each other to new and exciting activities or unfamiliar walks of life.

Changes that improve self-esteem or sense of worth might actually do us good. A procrastinator who enters into a relationship with Mr. “Get Things Done” may trade the habits of being late and half-finished for new habits of being on time and prepared. A new partner may help cut back on using colorful language, or may add community service to a once shorter list of activities that improve the lives of others. A caring person concerned for their partner’s health may influence them to adopt better eating habits, begin true exercise, or increase their physical activity (such as sex, or at least the desire for it)!

But a change doesn’t always do us good. Some changes can damage relationships or one’s sense of self. Sacrificing a long time support group of friends and family to spend time exclusively with Mr. Right makes him Mr. Wrong, if he insists on this change. And Mr. Wrong may not ask his partner specifically to change who they are as a person. Over time, the need to change for him, one small concession at a time, can unknowingly result in large fundamental changes that leave the woman unrecognizable to her former friends. Wednesday nights out with the girls may fade away to nothing, or Sunday mornings at church may turn into sleeping in every weekend.

Changes that feel regretful may force the person to choose between pleasing their partner, or pleasing themselves and staying true to their core values and needs. Deciding if the change is worth the struggle, which could be pivotal to the continuation of a relationship, can only be accomplished by the one making the changes.

In order to make this crossroads decision, a woman can ask herself if the changes she is making are one-sided or consensual, made under pressure or autonomous, and if they polarize or strengthen the partnership she is trying to maintain.

Are arguments more or less frequent, time together rare or improving, life easier apart from her lover or with him? Does she like herself more or less than she did at the start of the relationship and is it time for a change? Unwanted answers to these questions may mean that it is time to address the looming or present regret and unhappiness, and make a change that is good for both individuals in the relationship. Professional counselors, ministers or objective friends can help talk through this sometimes difficult decision. It may be easier for an outside party to sift through both the positive changes and the unhealthy ones as they examine the relationship and attempt to help the woman in doubt of her choices.

A GREEK CRITIQUE

At Wake Forest University here in WinstonSalem, the school motto is Pro Humanitate – for humanity – so it is not unusual to see students participating in fundraisers for the good of our community and our nation. Many events, like the “Wake ‘n’ Shake” dance marathon, raise money for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Fund Drive. Last year’s dance-off raised more than $200,000! At “Hit the Bricks for Brian!” teams of students run around the quad trying to accumulate the most laps in a specified period of time, also raising a substantial amount of money for the Piccolo cancer drive (the track team wins every year… go figure). All monies raised are donated to the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

While these are campus-wide events open to all students, if you look closely, many of the folks you see participating will have Greek letters on their shirts. With 11 sororities and 15 fraternities, Wake Forest is approximately 35-50% Greek.

Nationwide, fraternities and sororities have often been in the spotlight for various unpleasant reasons, including allegations of hazing, underage drinking and more. However, I recently spoke with two students in the Greek community at Wake Forest who noted that the philanthropic and academic missions of these groups are often overlooked.

GREEKS DOING GOOD Lauren Holt, a senior from Tampa, FL, is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. Last year, members of KD raised more than $18,000 in their Shamrock 5K race around the WFU campus. The proceeds were donated to Prevent Child Abuse America (PCAA), the official charity of the national organization, the local NC chapter of PCAA and the national KD organization.

The Kappa Delta members also work closely with local Girl Scout troops. Whether it’s pulling a wagonload of cookies around the dorms to help with sales, or doing field day events with the girls as part of their “Confidence Coalition,” there is no doubt that these ladies are making an impact, both locally and nationally.

Ethan Perellis, a junior from Louisville, KY, is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and works to raise money for Feeding America, the chapter’s national philanthropic organization. The Lambda Chi members regularly raise funds at various dinners and events, sometimes in cooperation with other fraternities or sororities.

In fact, according to WFU’s website, the campus Greek organizations, together, raise more than $100,000 each year in the spirit of Pro Humanitate.

There are auctions, dinners, races and tournaments of every kind, including golf, volleyball, softball and kickball. These events raise money for a wide variety of charities, including Children’s Miracle Network, MakeA-Wish Foundation, National Childhood Cancer Foundation, Brenner Children’s Hospital and St. Jude’s Hospital, just to name a few.

GREEKS MAKING THE GRADE Lauren and Ethan both emphatically said that being Greek actually improved their grades. While this initially seems counterintuitive, consider the fact that there is a minimum grade point average required to rush (partake in the Greek recruitment process), and some groups require even higher GPAs to be members.

As Lauren, who majors in health and exercise science, noted, she always has a study partner or someone to go to the library with her. The KDs maintain a tracking system of members’ majors, which allows the more senior girls to help the newer initiates choose classes and consider areas of study.

There are also “Smarty Pants” awards given for success in various academic endeavors, like acing a test or getting into graduate school.

Ethan, a biology major, stated that the Scholastic Chairman of his fraternity tracks the schedules and monitors the grades and GPAs of all members. If a Lambda Chi member is struggling academically, tutoring is available, and sometimes members have to forego social activities until their grades come back up. In the competitive academic arena at WFU, Lambda Chi has the highest GPA on campus, and they want to keep it that way!

Area Artists Come Together to Feed Elderly in Need This is the sixth year that the coming of spring will be foreshadowed by the bright and colorful paintings and the cheerful variety of crafts that make up the inventory for Senior Services’ Art Show and Sale Benefiting Meals-on-Wheels, Winston-Salem’s longtime meal-delivery program.

This popular one-day-only event, which is being held Saturday, March 12th, from 10am until 5pm at the Senior Services Center, 2895 Shorefair Drive, is free and open to the public.

Artist Mona Wu and her husband, Wally, are the honorary chairs for this year’s fundraiser.

Mona has participated in the Meals-on-Wheels benefit since its beginning in 2011, when fellow artists Dell James and Bonnie Dempster brought the show and sale into being. Mona, along with Dell and Bonnie, will have their work represented again this year, as they have had in each of the last five years, alongside the work of approximately 40 additional Piedmont-area artists.

Participating artists showcase hundreds of items, with something for everyone -- art to match all tastes and all pocketbooks -- and they donate a generous portion of their sales proceeds to provide nutritious meals for the homebound elderly.

“Last year’s event,” said Casie Hammons, Senior Services’ annual fund and special events director, “raised enough money to provide 17,600 meals for our community’s seniors. And given that we serve around 250,000 meals each year, this event is very important to us.” She added, “It’s such a great cause, and I can think of no better way to bring art lovers and Meals-on-Wheels supporters together to achieve such a positive outcome. With a single purchase, you can take home a wonderful piece of original art and provide meals for frail, older adults in need!”

In addition to generating funds for Meals-on-Wheels through art sales, the Art Show and Sale Benefiting Meals-on-Wheels also raises money through corporate sponsorships. Wells Fargo has been the presenting sponsor for the show and sale since 2013, and it is joined by a number of other area companies, as well as individual patrons, who generously contribute to support the hot-meal delivery program and combat hunger among our community’s senior population.

Meals-on-Wheels of Senior Services celebrated the delivery of five million meals in October of 2013 with the help of golf legend Arnold Palmer and is about a year and a half away from delivering its sixth millionth meal. Senior Services is a private, nonprofit agency whose mission is to enable the elderly of Forsyth County to remain in their own homes for as long as possible, living with dignity. Through its Meals-on-Wheels program, nearly 1,200 senior citizens in Forsyth County have nutritious meals delivered to their homes by a corps of approximately 1,900 volunteers. Other programs under the Senior Services umbrella, in addition to Meals-on-Wheels, include Help Line, Senior Lunch, Home Care, Elder Care Choices, Living-at-Home and the Elizabeth and Tab Williams Adult Day Center.

International Wom en’s Day

March 8th is International Women’s Day, a worldwide day set aside to recognize and celebrate cultural, social, economic and political achievements of women. During a time when women’s issues are all over the news, this day marks yet another reminder that there are women around the world looking for much more gender equality in their everyday lives.

According to the website, “International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since the early 1900’s -- a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day (IWD). Many organizations declare an annual IWD theme that supports their specific agenda or cause, and some of these are adopted more widely with relevance than others.”

No matter where you stand on the gender equality spectrum, it is hard to deny that millions of women throughout the world, especially in less developed nations, face gender discrimination on a daily basis. Without anyone supporting them within their own government, most will never see the day when they are treated with the same respect as their male counterparts. In some countries, women face the death penalty for something as simple as an accusation of infidelity, where men are nearly expected to be unfaithful with no repercussions.

The website quotes world-renowned feminist Gloria Steinem, who said, “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”

While gender equality in the United States has become a major political issue in regards to equal pay for women, there is no

doubt that our struggles often pale in comparison with those of women in impoverished nations.

This year’s campaign theme is “Pledge for Parity.” The campaign is asking men and women to pledge to do something to advance gender equality. The campaign goes on to say, “Worldwide, women continue to contribute to social, economic, cultural and political achievement. And we have much to celebrate today. But progress towards gender parity has slowed in many places. The World Economic Forum predicted in 2014 that it would take until 2095 to achieve global gender parity. Then, one year later in 2015, they estimated that a slowdown in the already glacial pace of progress meant the gender gap wouldn’t close entirely until 2133. Everyone, men and women, can pledge to take a concrete step to help achieve gender parity more quickly -whether to help women and girls achieve their ambitions, call for gender-balanced leadership, respect and value difference, develop more inclusive and flexible cultures or root out workplace bias. Each of us can be a leader within our own spheres of influence and commit to take pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity.”

International Women’s Day began more than 100 years ago, and it is still going strong. While this is great news for those at the forefront of the effort, it is a true testament to how far women have had to go to be where we are today, and it is an eye-opening reminder of how far we still have to go in many countries around the world.

Every Thursday at the Muddy Creek Cafe, songwriters, singers, musicians, and music lovers of all ages gather to share their love of music. It doesn’t matter how old you are, or how well you sing. All that matters is that you love music, especially live music. The growing community of songwriters that come out on a regular basis consists of several young talents that, musically, possess a sky-high ceiling of potential.

Sarah Sophia is one of those young talents. At a recent open mic, I overheard someone in the crowd saying “How can someone that young know so much stuff about life?” I walked over and said, “She is an old musical soul,” and that person seemed to get it. Sarah’s lyrics combine knowledge and life situations that are very easy for the listener to understand.

She delivers them in a very humble and believable way. Her method of songwriting combines crafty chord structuring with lyrical lines that anyone, at any age, can relate to.

Sarah’s life journey is truly inspiring. It’s one that tells of dealing with family issues, and life situations that, no matter how they are experienced, shape the person you become.

When she heard the song “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson for the first time, it changed her life. The song touched her in a way that inspired her to pursue a career as a professional musician.

Growing up, Sarah’s mom exposed her to all of the ‘70s pop/rock greats and many other genres of music as well, shaping her musical versatility, and it shows in her songs. Sarah moved to Kernersville in May of 2015. After only a few days of being here, she found herself at the Muddy Creek Cafe for the weekly “Open Mic with Country Dan Collins.”

She was welcomed with open arms and has blossomed into a crowd favorite.

Sarah has a very humble and believable stage presence that is very convincing, allowing the listener to actually “feel” the song. Her ability to weave thoughtful lyrical lines that draw you in, along with catchy choruses that roll right off the tongue, could easily have you singing along in no time. Then, at the song’s end, while the crowd is cheering her on, she simply absorbs the love, and afterwards stays as humble as she was before that moment.

“For me, music has always been equivalent to happiness, and maybe if we have one more person trying to spread happiness through music we can make the world a better, happier, and more peaceful place,” says Sarah. When you see Sarah smile, you’ll get what she means.

Besides drinking to forget, looking out the train windows is her only pastime since losing her family and her job. Watching the same houses and the same people pass by gives her a sense of familiarity as she glimpses the intimacies of daily life going on behind kitchen curtains and open bedroom blinds. She even makes up stories about the homes’ inhabitants and their perfect lives. But when she thinks she sees something she wasn’t supposed to and one of those perfect someones ends up missing, there are no illusions left as the fragile world she has built on pretense begins to unravel. With her drinking out of control and her creditability in tatters, Rachel can’t trust her own eyes…or can she?

After being homeschooled his whole life, he’s entering fifth grade at Beecher Prep… and it won’t be easy. As if being the new kid isn’t hard enough, Auggie has his own set of challenges: he was born with severe facial deformities. Being different, so extraordinarily different, it’s hard to know how to act, how to make friends, how to even just survive the day sometimes. But Auggie won’t give up, and with the help of some new friends, Auggie survives (and thrives) the roller coaster that is the fifth grade. Though written for young adults, this book is for everyone. It’s smart and funny, just like Auggie himself. It’s a quick read; while being a page-turner, lessons about love, loyalty, and friendship abound, and it has become a favorite of mine. Such a special book. Such a special boy. Such a wonder.

Gone Girl By Gillian Flynn

Reviewed by Vonda Henderson | Genre: Adult Fiction Gone Girl is packed with twists and turns. The story opens with Nick and Amy Dunn’s fifth wedding anniversary. The chapters alternate between Nick’s thoughts and Amy’s diary entries at first. Facing unemployment due to downsizing, they have to leave their home in New York to return to Nick’s childhood home in Missouri. Nick naturally feels comfortable, but Amy is struggling to fit in. When Nick discovers that Amy is gone, the investigating detectives naturally look at him closely. As the author digs deeper into Nick and Amy, the face they present is not true – they are both troubled and flawed. There are no redeeming personalities to be found. Nick’s sister has her own issues with being his twin; Nick has secrets; Amy’s personality issues stem from her childhood as the primary character in a continuing book series written by her parents (she feels they live off her); the detectives are quick to assume Nick’s guilt; and people from Amy’s past (one in particular) come and go, bringing their distorted image of Amy with them. Not to give away the outcome, but it was surprising and chilling. Why anyone would make the decision that Nick made seals the fact that he and Amy cannot function without each other. Woe is to those around them. The ending is abrupt, and the reader is left to imagine their future (and whether they survive it).

Busy as a Bee Concierge Completely Settles Family into New Home in Two Days

CLIENT: Shyla and Godwin Omorogieva LOCATION: South Carolina PROBLEM: Shyla Omorogieva dreaded moving from Maryland to South Carolina as part of her husband’s job relocation. She felt overwhelmed by all the work required to unpack and organize their new home in a new place while juggling multiple obligations.

Thankfully, they received a full relocation package from her husband’s employer, which, in addition to the packing and moving of their housewares in Maryland, included the services of Minnie Aikens and her Busy as a Bee Concierge team. “Your life is a sculpture, every day chip away.” This quote

by J.R. Rim expresses his view on a life well-lived. It looks at how the achievement of a dream comes to pass. A sculpture is a piece of art that starts with a vision, and proceeds through the carving, cutting, or molding of materials in their rawest forms to give a solid form to that vision. It is a product of force, sheer will, and love that for centuries has given us some remarkable creations. Bryce Hauser is certainly aware of the power of this media. In fact, he has made a career of bringing solid objects to life.

Bryce Hauser is the gallery and membership coordinator for Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. He is also a sculptor in the downtown area who has made his mark with his remarkable creations. Graduating from East Carolina University in 2013, Hauser has taken his Bachelors in Fine Arts with a concentration in Sculpture and sculpted quite an artist’s life for himself.

“In the beginning of my education at ECU, I planned to concentrate in Illustration and become a production artist, as I thought that was the only way to make a living in the visual arts. I took Sculpture I, a class where I knew I would learn welding, casting and some carving techniques, which all sounded like fun and useful, tangible skill sets. I cracked on an acetylene torch for the first time and immediately fell in love with the process. Something about the almost elemental fusion of seemingly indestructible materials felt primal, and I realized I could bring any form I could dream up into reality. I quickly changed my focus to sculptural studies. I learned welding, wood carving, steel fabrication, and the ancient art of iron casting, which has not changed in millennia,” says Hauser.

When asked about his influences Hauser is quick to give credit where credit is due. “My family is full of talent: my father was a wonderful tenor and took much joy from singing, my sister can dance and sing and was president of Acapology, an NC State A Cappella group, my brother is a full-time cinematographer and photographer who produces some of the best work I have ever seen, and my Pawpaw was an extremely talented banjo player and could pick with the best of them. Growing up around these personalities virtually guaranteed I would pursue the arts, and I knew it from a very young age,” he continues.

Hauser’s body of work is a testament to his style, as he works to bring life to his sculptures. “My current body of work is an exploration of lasting form and gestural composition through improvisational sculptural practices. I work quickly, bringing a combination of figurative and abstract objects into space. Through this process, I take brief moments of insight and solidify them in a permanent form. All of my sculptures are sketches. The purpose of a sketch is a to assist in creating a more finished object; I do not work to create that terminal object. That object would be, for lack of a better word, dead. My work needs to live, to move and interact with the elements and audience. This way the work is continually evolving. I will make that terminal piece, but that is far off, and I cannot see it now, nor do I wish to,” he adds.

Bryce Hauser has worked hard to not only hone his craft, but to make his mark in the area. His father, who according to Hauser had a huge impact on his life and art, passed away in December of last year. Before passing away, told Bryce to “believe in himself and his artwork.” Hauser is using that advice to fuel his passion even more, as he continues to “chip away” at a life he believes is well-lived, in an area like downtown Winston -Salem that embraces and encourages that kind of passion.

A Blooming Wonderful Time!

I love to have fresh flowers and plants in my home. Their beauty and fragrance always bring a smile to my face. My grandmother had that same love. So much so that she had a garden room added to their home. This room was where I spent a good deal of my time when we visited. No matter what the season, my grandmother always had something amazing growing in the garden room. Even in the dead of winter, that room brought the promise of spring and all its beauty. Not only did everything her green thumb planted indoors and out thrive, she had the ability to make beautiful arrangements with them that filled her home year round.

Unfortunately, I found out that her talent was not hereditary.

My arrangement skills were limited to carefully unwrapping the flowers I bought, trimming the stems while carefully keeping them together in the same configuration they were in and placing them in a vase. It was fine but never anything creative or fun. Fortunately, I recently attended a class at the Winston-Salem Flower School, and through the guidance and instruction of Amy Dunlap, I am feeling a bit more confident in my abilities to create something a bit more exciting.

Amy, owner of Amy Lynne Originals, a special event floral design studio, had an idea that grew and evolved into the Winston-Salem Flower School in early 2015. Once a month throughout the year a different class is offered at the design studio. The website describes each upcoming class and how to sign up for the

two-hour morning or evening session. The March 18th course will have participants learning how to design and make a custom spring wreath. Using an assortment of fresh and dried materials, Amy starts by demonstrating the technique of wreath building.

You then make one that reflects your personal style. All of the quality items you need are provided. Light refreshments are always served, and you are welcome to bring adult beverages if you desire.

I will admit I was a bit apprehensive taking a class in floral arranging knowing my timidity in mixing different textures, colors and flowers. Watching Amy create a flawless design all the while explaining the process, answering our questions and quickly and expertly cutting and placing the elements of her arrangement made me a bit apprehensive to start mine. However, it took less than five minutes to be fully immersed in choosing which stem I was going to place next and where it needed to go. Fun does not begin to describe the time my fellow Winston-Salem Flower School attendees and I had as we let our creative juices flow.

Amy’s studio, her organization, the mass of amazing items to use, her knowledge and her expertise made for a wonderful way to spend a morning. At the end of the session, it was amazing to look around and see how different, and dare I say beautiful, each of our designs were. My angst has been replaced with a sense of accomplishment, and I look forward to another class.

As if leaving with a stunning arrangement and newfound knowledge wasn’t enough, first-timers receive a pair of clippers and a Winston-Salem Flower School apron to take with them.

Repeat students receive a notebook and a $10 discount when signing up for more than one class.

Protection Against Identity Theft

n a Saturday morning while running errands, I received a call that left me exclaiming, “Oh, no! Not again!” It was the third time in seven years our credit card number was stolen, shared, and fraudulently used in multiple states. While the bank notified us the first and second time, I felt panicked when the call did not come. As a client, I requested to be immediately notified, regardless of the hour, should it happen again. Living with a husband who ensured network security for government offices at one time, most would think we are safe from theft. In fact, no one is truly safe. According to the Department of Justice, “More than 17.5 million people were identity theft victims last year.” The following “solutions” will help you become more aware, and know how to take steps toward security and protection for each member of your household.

Cunning Hackers:

One common method of identity theft is called “account takeover fraud.” It occurs when your credit card and vital personal information is stolen through any account using email or “phishing” scams. Hackers will change your settings and make purchases, or open new accounts in your name. A victim may not be aware of the theft until either a bill arrives or the collectors start calling.

Solutions:

• Install spyware, malware, and ad blocker protection on every computer in the home. Run weekly scans.

• Be creative with new passwords. Try “!l0veCh0c0!@te” or “Th1$P@ssw0rdI$L0ng.”

• Frequently review credit and debit card activity. Most fraud begins with a “test,” in which the thief charges an unnoticeable amount, such as a few dollars.

• Never answer “phishing” emails that ask you to verify your banking information. If you question the validity, call the bank directly.

Debit Cards

Debit cards have a greater risk than credit cards, especially if used at a gas station pump, ATM or other outside “machine.” Your data can be stolen through what is termed a classic “skimmer” attack, cloned, and used to empty bank accounts.

Solutions:

• If you notice the machine has a different color or the graphics are not correctly aligned, WALK AWAY. • Use your hand to hide the sequence of the PIN code.

• While not all transactions are 100% protected, report a lost or stolen debit card, or fraud immediately. A bank credit card has greater protection than debit or ATM cards.

Protecting Your Identity Online

Thieves do not need your credit card number to steal it.

Sometimes, one piece of vital information can be the beginning of identity theft. It may sound harmless, but think of the innocent personal information that is listed on your social media site. You may think, “By listing my birthday, places of employment, and high school, future friends can find me.” Well, that’s true.

Depending on your level of security, anyone can find you. The Internet and social media sites have made stealing a person’s identity much easier.

Solutions:

• Change your settings from “everyone” to “friends only.”

• Delete personal information, which includes birthdates, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and places of employment.

• Remind children to not share details such as functioning or fake alarm systems and codes, lock boxes or safes, or any valuable item.

• Never “share” whether you are leaving the house for an evening or an out-of town trip. Pictures of special events and vacations should be posted after you return, clearly stating, “Our family HAD a great vacation.”

Mail Theft

If you do not own an iPhone, computer for email, or shop online, you may think you are less prone to identity theft. The reality is that stealing mail continues to be a frequent and preferred method of thieves. The average household receives credit cards with vital information and blank checks, credit card and banking statements. It is a good chance your mailbox has something worth stealing.

Solutions:

• If a credit card or other bill has not arrived, immediately call.

• Go 100% paperless, and access your financial statements through the businesses’ websites. Shred all credit card receipts and statements that have card numbers, names and addresses.

• Close unused accounts.

• On each credit card, the safest protection is to write “See ID” with a Sharpie. These words cannot be written over or erased.

• Request new checks to be picked up at the bank. Stolen checks can be altered and cashed by thieves.

Every day, thousands of families are shocked to discover their child’s identity is stolen. Prior to North Carolina House Bill 607, credit bureaus could not freeze reports for minors under the age of 16. Pressure on Couples Who Choose Not to Have Children

BY ROBIN WHITE ELLIS I was barely married a full year before I was peppered with the same question from multiple directions. ”When are you going to have a baby?” There is an assumed natural progression from being a married couple to starting a family. This question didn’t bother me too much, despite its invasiveness, as I did want a child eventually. However, what about the couples that have made the conscious decision to abstain from parenthood? The social pressure put on them is constant and unrelenting...and blatantly unfair.

Why is it acceptable for family members and friends to use coercion on a person when it comes to such a life altering subject? Some dear family members of mine have made that decision, and they have heard it all! Once the question is posed and the answer given, the usual rejoinder is something along the lines of “You are young and will change your mind.” At that point, everyone waits for the wife to turn 30 as if that is the magical age that will remind her that her egg basket is running low, and she must hop on the proverbial parent train as quickly as possible! Not everyone hears the ticking of biological clocks!

I was eating lunch with some coworkers, and the question was posed to the newlywed in our group. She calmly and politely stated that she did not want children. I nearly choked when another coworker asked her shrewdly, “And what does your husband think of this, dear? Do you believe he will stay with you if you deny him children?” The insensitivity of it was shocking and uncomfortable. It is outrageous, yet many people refuse to accept such a decision, at times going so far as to refer to the

couple as “selfish” or the female as “unwomanly.” Sadly, it can even put a wall in friendships, as the parents in the group discuss what cannot be understood amongst themselves.

There are many valid reasons to skip motherhood. Women may be working their way up in their careers and find fulfillment there. Perhaps a couple chooses to travel and see the world, knowing that neither the time nor the money would be available to fulfill their dreams if they had children. There could be health or financial concerns of which we are unaware...and honestly, it isn’t our business. While I have found extreme happiness in my child, I have friends who simply do not enjoy children and, frankly, they do not have to give anyone a reason for opting out of the aforementioned parent train. There are many ways to have a meaningful life, and children are not mandatory to have one. Instead of insulting and pushing couples, perhaps we should applaud those who make the deliberate decision to eschew parenthood instead of bringing an unwanted child into the world.

Having children is an irreversible decision that should never be taken lightly. Instead of trying to analyze our neighbors and assume there is a critical flaw in their DNA for renouncing parenthood, perhaps we should congratulate them for knowing themselves and the paths that are best for them.

While an empty nest is frightening to some, to others it simply means a roomier nest with greater peace.

Living Gently: Decision vs. Choice

There are some words that are separated by only a thin line of distinction. Such is the case when it comes to “decision” and “choice.” A decision is to make up one’s mind. A choice is a right or opportunity to choose. Roy Disney once said, “It’s not hard to make decisions when you know what your values are,” while Albert Camus said, “Life is the sum of all your choices.” So, if we marry these two definitions and thoughts together, do our decisions, which are based on values, define our life’s choices? One could argue that it’s a matter of “tomato tomahto, potato, potahto.”

But I disagree.

For instance, as parents, we may give our child three choices: “Would you rather have an apple, a banana, or a piece of cheese for a snack?” Three delicious options may be laid out before them, but you may turn your back for a moment to find your child elbow-deep in the cookie jar!

You gave them three choices, but they made an entirely different decision.

See where I’m going here? You don’t have to be five years old to have this “decision versus choice” conundrum.

Decisions don’t necessarily imply a list of choices. In fact, a decision may be made that results in the presentation of choices. For instance, if you decide to move to another state, your choice of jobs and residency are based out of the decision you’ve made to relocate. Your decision to vote in this year’s election may come from the list of choices presented to you (though if you choose not to vote, I’m a firm believer in the adage, “you’ve lost your right to complain,” but I digress…).

A choice ultimately results in a decision, but it may be the result of a fork in the road. Do we go left or right?

Take the road less traveled? Or do we merely stand there, staring at our options, and by our inability to choose, make the choice of indecision?

Let’s say you meet someone new. A person’s body language may result in a decision as to whether or not you like them. You may decide not to pursue a relationship with that person, or you may choose to wait and get to know them better before making a judgment call.

Decisions and choices surround us daily. Some are as insignificant as coffee versus tea (ALWAYS coffee), what to make for dinner, or which movie to watch on a Friday night. Some are more significant… where do we go on our summer vacation? Should we buy now or wait for the sale? Should we have our party this weekend or next?

Then, of course, there are the decisions that are truly monumental, and possibly life changing. Using myself as an example, decisions and choice have played pivotal roles in my life. First, when I decided to leave corporate America, my decision resulted in a series of choices that ultimately brought me to Forsyth Magazines. And a couple of years later, my decision to step outside my comfort zone and go on a dating website resulted in meeting my husband.

As you go about your daily lives, take stock of your decisions and choices. Some may feel meaningless but take a few moments to ponder the possibilities behind them. Your choice to eat out tonight may be a decision that impacts the waitperson who serves you and who is putting extra hours in to save money for school. Your decisions and choices walk a fine line, and occasionally, seem like one. However, the impact of them may have a ripple effect, not only in your life, but in the lives of others.

Choose wisely when making your decisions.

Swim Program Coming Summer 2016

ABOUT THE POOLS: The new facility will house two pools. Both will be four feet deep with a warm water temperature of 89 degrees; the air temperature will be 92 degrees. The pools will have large windows with a view of the lake and wooded area, as well as large viewing windows from the lobby to the pool. Entry will be through the existing entrance, with new access doors to the pool area through the existing lobby.

Salem Gymnastics Sports Center is ready to jump in and get their feet wet!

Really! In addition to all the programs regularly offered – gymnastics, martial arts, tumbling and dance-nastics (ballet, tap and gymnastics) – there’s more coming!

One pool will be 25’ x 15’ and will be for the parent/tot classes.

A crawling bench will be on the edge of the pool where water will be at babies’ elbow level.

This pool will be in an area where there will be fewer distractions for the small students.

A new swimming program, Salem Swim, is slated to open this coming summer.

June 2016 is the target completion date for the expanded, indoor facility. This new program is targeted specifically to teach non-swimmers from six months of age and up.

The other pool is much larger – 25’ x 50’. Lanes will be set up as teaching stations to accommodate multiple classes.

Seating benches will be available.

Salem Gymnastics Sports Center is a member of the US Swim School Association (USSSA), the largest in the country. USSSA has 400 member schools in 39 states and 16 countries worldwide. Their charge is to “provide swimming and water safety instruction to approximately 500,000 annually.”

Swim Director Mike Wood will lead the program. Mike relocated from Minnesota and has multiple years of experience with swim schools. He was a swimmer during high school and college and was an assistant aquatics director for programs in Minnesota in Minnesota.

• Pre-registration is anticipated to begin in April.

• Classes are planned for morning, after lunch, after school, and Saturdays, and will be 30 minutes in length.

• Parent /tot classes (six months to 36 months) are designed to teach children basic skills, such as floating and breath control, while simultaneously teaching their parents how to be comfortable and safe in the water.

• Teaching ratio is 4:1 for most classes; parent/tots ratio is 6:1.

• In addition to Aquatics Director Mike Wood, Salem plans to hire several swim instructors.

Chicken Fajita Lettuce Wraps Mexican cuisine is a frequent dinner theme at the Eagle house. My husband and I love Mexican food and are always trying out new dishes with our own twist. My mom doesn’t eat cheese and my dad has never cared much for Mexican food, so tacos…enchiladas… taquitos…fajitas…tamales… they were a rare occurrence growing up. Don’t worry though; I’ve made up for lost time. Mexican is on the menu at least once a week. Mexican Mondays, anyone?

On the other hand, my husband grew up eating lots of Mexican food. His grandfather was born and raised in Texas and his love of Mexican food was passed on to his daughter (my mother-in-law). I had my first-ever homemade tamale at my mother-in-law’s house a few years ago per the request of my grandfather-in-law—that was his birthday dinner dish of choice. To say they were amazing would be a massive understatement!

These chicken fajita lettuce wraps may not be made-from-scratch tamales, but they are a super easy (and very healthy) Mexican dish that my husband refers to as “one of our ‘top ten’ meals that we make.”

What you’ll need for a 3-serving dinner (2 servings if you are feeding Chris Eagle): • 2 chicken breasts • 1 onion • 1 pepper • 1 packet Fajita (or taco) seasoning • 1 avocado • 1-2 fresh jalapeños (optional) • 1 can black beans • 1 tomato OR 1 pack cherry tomatoes • 1 head of Bibb lettuce (sometimes referred to as Boston or butter lettuce) • Other optional toppings, like cheese, sour cream, salsa, etc.

Chop the onion, pepper and 1-2 jalapenos, and sauté with a tablespoon of olive oil. Meanwhile, slice the chicken breasts, tomato / tomatoes, avocado, and drain / rinse the can of black beans. Once the onion, pepper and jalapeno mixture has cooked for a few minutes, add the sliced chicken and the fajita seasoning pack to another pan and cook on medium heat until cooked through.

While the onion & pepper mixture and chicken are cooking, lay out the Bibb lettuce on plates as “cups” and fill with your toppings. Once the onion & pepper mixture and chicken are done cooking, add to your lettuce “cups” and enjoy!

Michele Mitchell Michele Mitchell has always been passionate about the importance of home and community. Years ago, she launched a campaign to help a family after a fire destroyed their home. She organized groups and fundraisers to raise money for this family in need. Although the family was not able to return to their home, Michele and her group in the community came together to help give this family some sense of normalcy. Michele carries that passion into her role as Vice President of Loan Origination for Piedmont Federal Savings Bank, where she has been employed since 2001. Robin Bralley This month, we celebrate the 100th issue of Forsyth Family! With this milestone, we want to highlight Robin Bralley! Robin grew up in Clemmons and has called it home all her life. She has a degree from High Point University and, after finding herself downsized from her marketing position in corporate America, Robin joined forces with Forsyth Woman publisher and friend, Keela Johnson to launch Forsyth Family. She and her husband, Tim, have been married for 27 years and share two grown daughters, Briana and Morgan. They will soon be welcoming a son-in-law to the family. Robin and her family are avid Carolina Panthers fans and enjoy going to the movies and summer concerts. She is also an active member of Sunrise United Methodist Church and volunteers for bimonthly bread pick-up to support the Clemmons Food Pantry. Arts Council Announces 2016 Campaign Leadership The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County has launched its 2016 Annual Campaign and publically introduced its two co-chairs. Leading the campaign this year will be prominent local civic leaders Marybeth Wallace, special assistant to President Nathan Hatch at Wake Forest University, and Leslie Hayes, Executive Vice President of Wells Fargo & Company and Business Banking Division Manager for the Carolinas.

“Both Marybeth and Leslie have amazing records of service to non-profits in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, “ said Jim Sparrow, President and CEO of The Arts Council, “and we are so very fortunate that they have agreed to jointly chair and provide leadership to our 2016 campaign.”

Once a coach, always a coach, and that’s what Dave McConnell loves most about his boot camp for adults -- guiding people to better health and fitness with his own brand of motivation.

Appropriately named The Blitz, his classes focus both weights and cardio and his clients -- 60% women -- stay inspired to keep up with his bright-and-early schedule of early morning training.

“Doing something like this early in the morning makes everything else about your day better,” said Dave. “I wouldn’t get up at 4:15am if I didn’t love it!”

Derrick Speas and Dave McConnell are a team all their own, both coaching clients and investing their time in the futures of young athletes. They’ve also found the perfect home for their classes and training sessions.

“The good folks at Wilson Park Athletics & Training Center have allowed us this opportunity,” said Derrick. Both coaches have acquired quite a following and couldn’t be happier continuing to inspire a lifetime of fitness success in their clients.

SPEED DREAMS

After coaching for years at the high school, college and professional levels, Derrick Speas found several parents requesting that he coach their young athletes individually. He began with two or three students and has now coached more than 100 budding young competitors. Derrick saw a need to develop and condition young athletes and provide them with some unique opportunities, while building their speed, which he feels can be taught and developed, regardless of age or ability. With that, Speed Dreams was born.

“I’ve been blessed, and I’ve been around the world,” said Derrick, as he talks about starting conditioning with kids as young as four or five. Derrick holds classes Monday through Thursdays -- mostly in the after-school hours -- but says he works with many dedicated student athletes who come in at 5:30am for training and then head to school.

Derrick also works with Team USA Speedskating, sharing his philosophy with young skaters from an early age. His favorite aspect of his career as a speed coach is seeing a student progress from JV to Varsity sports and on to the college and professional levels.

“I like seeing growth in the individual,” said Derrick, proudly.

After coaching football for more than 30 years (he also initiated the strength training program at West Forsyth High School), Dave retired but continued to train students in an after-school athletic performance program. He was so well respected that he developed a loyal following and, after a parent suggested he think about beginning an adult program, the idea of The Blitz took off. Dave moved his program to the Wilson Park Athletics & Training Center in April of 2015. Current classes range from 12 to 18 participants with a variety of activities targeting everything from weight loss and injury prevention to intense training to achieve personal goals. There’s a bond between class members and an infectious energy thanks to their leader and “coach!”

Throwing Money Away

My grandmother always used the phrase “throwing money out the window.” It’s sage advice in a time, decades later, where it truly means something to all of us. Saving money isn’t an easy concept. In thinking about those figurative rainy days, it feels like we have been engulfed in one rain storm after another. How often do we dip into our savings, not for the dreams of a future vacation or buying something special for the home, but to use for an unexpected and expensive bill? We’ve been taught to buy new and the very best; yet, this philosophy on shopping is no longer cost effective. In fact, you may be wasting money in extremely common and overlooked ways.

Buying Brand Name Products If you have ever looked at the label and compared a brand name to a generic, you will discover that, often, the only difference is the price. From food to skin care to medications, there is an unfavorable perception connected to the word “generic.” The average savings is 30%; yet, comparative shopping opportunities can save you 50% on some products. The next time you are requesting medication from the pharmacy, ask about the savings in using a generic brand. It may be the relief your pocket needs.

Not Buying Used or Second Hand I sympathize with avid readers who effortlessly devour one book after another. The problem is, books are pricey. I can buy a used book in good condition at a fraction of the price, and it often appears brand new. We can apply this same theory to other items, too. Consignment boutiques and salvage yards are wonderful ways to save money while finding exactly what we want.

Paying Credit Card Interest Sometimes, the price was so wonderful, the deal so grand, that you couldn’t pass it up. Without cash, the item was placed on a credit card. Paying interest on purchases is an expensive habit.

On your statement, credit card companies will tell you exactly how much money you have invested annually in interest. Sadly, $4,000 at 14.95% interest will total over $600 a year. One of the most difficult ways to save is to eliminate credit card debt, and curb those impulses to charge.

Utility and Cable Bills Through a programmable energy efficient thermostat, technology has assisted our efforts to save money. Throughout the seasons, the temperature can be scheduled to accommodate a household’s traffic, day and night. Otherwise, the thermostat should be manually adjusted. Turning off lights, tossing wool balls into your dryer, reducing water usage, and hanging blackout curtains, for instance, is an effort that assists in reducing our monthly costs.

You can start questioning whether the service or “use” justifies the amount paid each month. For instance, “Do I really need a land line?” or “Are the premium cable channels necessary, especially when I pay to stream movies?” Did you know most utility and cable companies offer a discount of retention year after year?

The only way to determine your eligibility and savings is to call.

Buying Food or Drinks on the Go Every now and then you stop to buy a quick, ready-made meal, or snacks and a drink. While it may appear to be just a few dollars here and there, it adds up to a significant amount at the end of the month. Become a planner and start packing extra vegetables or fruits to snack on at the office or while you run errands. Buying a case of bottled water or your preferred drink from a warehouse store will increase your savings exponentially.

Disorganization “I lost my keys again!” is a common sentiment expressed through anger and worry. Sometimes, the only solution is to pay a locksmith. Stop and truly consider how many times you have spent money on an item that was deemed lost. It happens. We replace items of convenience, such as remote controls for our garages and televisions, and dog leads, for example. Start thinking about an organizational system. How about placing a basket right inside the front door for keys, or a hook on the wall for dog leads?

With these simple tips, you will eliminate needless spending and start saving. It might not be easy, especially at first, but you will quickly see how investing in change will result in a feeling of financial empowerment!

Tips and Tricks for Parenting Toddlers

There are countless problems you encounter on a daily basis that can put a little speed bump in your day. Life hacks are those “a-ha!” moments where you find the simplest solution to your daily problems, often using items immediately at your disposal. Each month this column will take you through some creative hacks to use in all different areas of your life that will make your day-to-day as simple as possible. This month we’ll go over some hacks that will help all of our parents.

If you have an independent toddler, then you know sometimes they insist on using an adult cup even if they don’t have the whole concept mastered. You can turn any cup into a kid-friendly cup by covering the top with Press n’ Seal wrap and punching a straw through the top. Voila, a homemade sippy cup!

As the weather warms up, we are all eager to get outside and soak up those sun rays we’ve been missing all winter. Don’t forget to make sure to keep yourself safe from pesky bug bites and, even more importantly, your little one. If you’re still in the pre-walking stage, set up your playpen outside and stretch a fitted sheet across the top. This prevents insects from getting in and still allows your little one room to move and play while enjoying the fresh air.

Bedtime can be tricky once your little one’s imagination starts to grow. Scary dreams and bumps and creaks in the night start meaning much less sleep for the both of you. Try taking an empty Febreeze bottle or other spray bottle and rinse it thoroughly with warm, soapy water. Fill with clean water and a combination of calming essential oils like lavender and chamomile. Decorate the outside of the bottle with monster stickers or scrapbook accessories. Mark the bottle with nice large letters reading Monster-Be-Gone, or something similar, and spray away all those scary boogers.

Toddler furniture can get quite expensive, and it has such a short life. If you’re not ready to upgrade your child to a full-size bed, but they need to move to the next step, try repurposing. Flip a large coffee table, preferably with decorative wooden legs, upside down. Depending on your preference, you can keep the legs and have the poster bed look, perfect for little princesses, or saw them off and sand them down.

When it’s time to learn how to dress themselves, toddlers are eager to be independent. They can also be pretty stubborn, and you may find your little man or lady in mismatched clothes and shoes on the wrong feet. The clothes can be a little more complicated, but here’s a tip for the shoes. Take a large sticker with easily discernible sides. Cut it in half and put each side on the inside of your child’s shoes near the arches.

When the shoes are on the correct feet, the sticker is made whole again. Go over the new process with your child and let them go to work.

As we’ve established, toddlers regularly become more stubborn the more mobile they become. The bathroom is yet another area where little ones who think they know it all can wreak havoc. To prevent toilet paper messes, try applying a mark on the bathroom wall using painter’s tape or construction paper and mark where you want them to stop pulling so they know where to tear.

A Healthy Super-Food

Pomegranates are an ancient fruit. They are mentioned in the Bible several times and their images were found engraved on ancient coins of Judea. They were used as decorations in temples, eaten in special celebrations, and used in pictures and on fabrics. They are native to Iran, India and the dry areas of Southeast Asia, East Indies and Africa. They were brought to America in the late 1700s by the Spanish settlers in California and are now grown in Arizona and California.

The pomegranate tree takes four to five years to mature and can have a life expectancy of up to 200 years. The first 20 years are considered the best time period for fruit bearing. Sometimes known as a seeded apple, the seeds are called arils and have a distinctive, sweet, slightly tart flavor. These seeds are now considered a super-food due to their health benefits.

According to AuthorityNutrition.com a cup of arils contains: • 144 calories • 3 grams of protein • 7 grams of fiber • 30% Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C • 36% RDA of Vitamin K (essential for blood clotting process) • 12% RDA of Potassium (maintains cellular functions and balances fluid levels) • 16% RDA folate (vitamin B) • 24 grams of sugar Pomegranates also have high levels of magnesium, calcium, zinc, iron, manganese and potassium. They do not contain cholesterol. Magnesium is needed for many processes in the body, including muscle and nerve functions, blood sugar levels and energy production. Calcium is needed for building bones and keeping bones and teeth healthy. Zinc helps the body’s immune system. Iron helps the muscles store and use oxygen.

Manganese is needed for normal brain and nerve function.

Some of the health benefits from pomegranates include anti-inflammatory effects due to the high vitamin C content.

It is considered beneficial to men with prostate cancer for

inhibiting cancer growth. It may also help with breast cancer, although these studies are incomplete.

During studies, test patients who drank 5 ounces of pomegranate juice per day for a two-week period saw lower blood pressure results. In a separate study, drinking 8 ounces of juice per day also resulted in memory enhancement. It is also helpful to drink prior to exercising to combat fatigue.

What are some ways to add this super-food to our diets?

• Add pomegranate arils to oatmeal and get a good start on your day (cooked or refrigerator oatmeal) • Mix into Greek yogurt and add some walnuts or pecans for a filling lunch • Include in roasted vegetables, such as carrots or brussels sprouts • Add to fruit salad

• Have a simple cup of arils by itself, as a healthy snack • Include in energy/protein smoothies

• Drink as a juice (check the label for additives)

• Add to vegetable salad for a surprise taste treat There are many websites for recipes using pomegranates in meat, vegetable and other side dishes.

Opening a pomegranate does take some time and patience.

I have yet to open one without getting juice splattered.

However, it’s worth the time and I’ve learned to have old clothes on before I cut into the fruit. One method is to cut just under the crown and then section into fourths before popping out the seeds. I have also seen another version where the fruit is cut in half and then each half is tapped with a wooden spoon to release the seeds. I will admit that I tried this method but don’t have the patience for it, so I just use the quarter method. The Do-It-Herself Oil Change

In today’s world, car owners are spending almost 100 dollars for the service of an oil change. “Would you like a higher quality oil?” is one question that raises the price while making drivers feel compelled to take good care of their vehicles. We look at this service as a convenience, and to save ourselves from a messy job and time. The truth is that we can take better care of our vehicles at a fraction of the expense and time as a “do-it-herself.”

Record Books We keep all kinds of records. Books or computer programs are used for our finances, while calendars help us remember a multitude of events. It is logical to keep a book for car maintenance and mileage for two reasons.

1. It’s a good feeling to have specific dates and the ability to answer questions about your fluids, tires, and oil changes.

2. In computing your fuel efficiency, you will discover ways to save money by modifying driving habits and improving gas mileage.

(My husband loves this “game” and will brag about achieving 650 miles on one tank of diesel.)

The Dipstick While all fluid levels should be checked, especially on older vehicles, the one that requires your attention is the [oil] dipstick.

In addition to learning if the levels are “full” or “low,” you will also determine if an oil change is sometimes based on a dark coloration. In the 1970s, most vehicles required 10W-40, which tended to lose its viscosity within 3,000 miles. Due to improvements in higher-quality lubricants, most automakers recommend oil changes after 5,000, 7,000, and sometimes as high as 15,000 miles for newer models. While changing too soon will not harm your vehicle, check your owner’s manual for mileage and time intervals.

The dipstick has a ring to loop one finger through and pull directly upwards. It is best if the car has cooled before checking oil levels.

Have a cloth in hand to wipe the stick clean before returning it fully, and pulling out to read. (In your record book, post the date and information concluded from the reading.)

What Kind of Oil Should I Buy? Scanning the shelving for oil is overwhelming. There are oils for high-tech engines, new cars, higher-mileage vehicles and heavy-duty/off-road vehicles. There is also a wide selection of viscosities. Do not guess – your owner’s manual will recommend the right oil and amount needed for your vehicle.

A “How To” Guide Before starting, it is important to gather all the necessary items together. You will need a wrench and a filter wrench, an oil pan, the filter and oil, a few rags, and a clean 1-gallon milk jug and funnel.

Draining To ease the flow of oil, allow your engine to run for about two minutes. The “drain plug” is a large bolt or plug located under the oil pan at the bottom of the engine. (Having your car on “ramps” with the parking brake pulled will ease your reach.) Position the oil pan; then, while your hand is protected with a rag, unscrew the plug with a wrench, and allow to drain. This step will take no longer than ten minutes.

Changing the Oil Filter With the hood already open, the next step is to unscrew the oil filter using a wrench (use the manual to help locate the filter).

Twist counterclockwise. Be careful and keep your hands steady as you remove it, as the filter will have oil in it. Pour the excess oil into the clean milk jug. Remove any remnants of the filter’s rubber seal, too. Before putting in the new filter with your hands, rub the seal with a little oil. (Follow the directions on the box.)

Plug the Pan With so many steps accomplished, it is important to remember to replace the plug or bolt the drain before adding oil. Wipe clean and look at the condition of the washer. It may need to be replaced.

Refill Pouring the recommended weight and amount of oil into your car will take little time; however, it is advised to use a funnel and pour slowly. Replace the oil filter cap; then, run the engine for a minute. Check for any leaks around the plug or the filter, and the oil level. It should read “full.” The final step is transferring the old oil into the gallon jug.

Congratulations! The entire process should take no more than 15 to 20 minutes. With each opportunity to change your oil, or to help, you will discover your car’s maintenance is in very capable hands!

St. Patrick’s Day Folklore

March 17th is coming, which means that it is nearly time to pull the green from our closets or risk an assault via pinching! St. Patrick’s Day is nigh with its feasting, parades, green beer and overall lightheartedness. Where does this frivolity originate? Let’s take a look at the genesis of this popular and enjoyable holiday.

To begin, Saint Patrick -- born near the year 460 -- was not Irish, though he is considered the Apostle of Ireland. He was originally of pagan religion, yet not much is known about his early years.

At some point, he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave.

Many years later, he escaped and returned to his family, Romans living in Britain at the time. He converted to Christianity and became a cleric and then a Bishop, ultimately opting to return to Ireland as a missionary. By the 600s, he was known as the Patron Saint of Ireland.

There are many common traditions when it comes to this holiday.

Let’s begin with the national emblem of Ireland and overall good luck symbol of the shamrock. This was considered a sacred plant in ancient Ireland due to its symbolization of the rebirth of spring.

A common myth is that St. Patrick used the clover’s three leaves to represent the Holy Trinity, although there is no evidence to validate this. Historians do believe that many Irish Christians saw the clover as a symbol of the cross.

While it is traditional to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, light blue was the color originally associated with him. Green was adopted as the national color of Ireland due to the land being known as the Emerald Isle. Clothing oneself in green became popular in the 19th century to celebrate this day. Nowadays, green is everywhere...from green beer to green rivers. Even the White House fountain is dyed green!

The image of the leprechaun is also popular but not to the Irish!

Many of them dislike this, stating that it perpetuates ethnic stereotypes, and they do not appreciate it being associated with the holiday in general. Leprechauns are fairy creatures in Irish folklore dating back to Celtic mythology. They are considered to be wise, rude, unpredictable and ruthless. They hoard their gold, and woe to the person who tries to take a bit of it! Despite both males and females dressing up as leprechauns, there is no such thing as a female version in folk mythology.

Many people carry rubber snakes when partying on St. Patrick’s Day due to his being credited with driving all snakes out of Ireland. While this sounds extraordinary, it must not have been a difficult job. According to fossil records, Ireland has never been home to snakes. During the Ice Age, Ireland was much too cold for reptiles, and the seas surrounding the country have kept such sneaky invaders out ever since.

St. Patrick’s Day has become a worldwide phenomenon, due to both its spiritual meaning as well as the fun side of the holiday.

Many Irish-Americans are Catholic and, as such, may be required to fast from alcohol during the season of Lent. They are allowed to break this fast for one day...to celebrate Saint Patrick...which is one reason that the day is associated with heavy drinking.

Obviously, there is much to choose from, no matter how you decide to celebrate on March 17th. Enjoy the parades, break out the green alcohol, enjoy the feasting of corned beef and cabbage, wave the Irish flag, pray and celebrate the man behind the frolicking shenanigans! Brenner Children’s Hospital’s NICU Palliative “Care Always” Program

The birth of a child is always a miracle, but for many families that miracle comes with challenges that they are not adequately prepared to handle. While many mothers and fathers face these challenges alone, the experts at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center’s Brenner Children’s Hospital decided to change that.

“We call our program ‘Care Always,’” said Dr. Christine Bishop, a neonatologist and the director of the neonatal and perinatal palliative care program at Brenner. “I created this program when I moved here two years ago, and it has grown over the past two years. We now have a nurse practitioner clinician and coordinator, and a growing group of parent and community partners.”

“Neonatal and perinatal palliative care provides prenatal care to families who have a fetus who has been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition,” Bishop said. It also provides care that focuses on quality of life for newborns and infants who have complex, potentially life-limiting medical problems, as well as end-of-life care for dying infants and their families.

“As part of this process, we have a clinic at the Comprehensive Fetal Care Center. We see mothers and their partners prenatally to provide counseling and support, in conjunction with their prenatal care, by our maternal fetal medicine specialists, as well as patients referred from Ob-Gyn physicians in the community,” Bishop said. “Many times, we are seeing them to discuss decision-making at birth and create a birth plan for when the baby is born. We then help coordinate information-sharing between the prenatal subspecialists, and dissemination of the family's birth plan.” This strategy ensures that everyone taking care of the mother and the baby know the plan and how the family would like their child cared for.

“For infants who are not diagnosed prenatally, we see them in the hospital and provide family support, and contribute to aspects of clinical care,” continued Bishop. “We focus on making sure that the pain and suffering are minimized and quality of life is enhanced, and if the baby is dying, we help coordinate and provide end-of-life care. We are not a hospice organization, but we often work very closely with our community hospice folks.”

The team effort involved in running this program is astounding, but the difference it has already made in the lives of patients is even more remarkable. Two special women, Kelly Warden and Mary Clark Hauser, are a huge part of the success of this program.

“Last year, a family who lost their daughter wanted to contribute to our program as a way of honoring her,” Bishop said. “I met with the mother, Mary Clark, and Kelly from Woobiebeans jewelry, to discuss how we might do this. Mary Clark had a necklace that had been given

to her by a friend with her daughter's name – Sadie Grace Hauser – on it, and throughout her pregnancy and after her daughter's birth and death she found comfort in having it near her. She wanted to use the donations from her daughter's memorial service to contribute to the program, and with Kelly's expertise, we designed bereavement & memorial necklaces and coins for our parents.

“The necklaces for mothers and coins for fathers say ‘always’ on them to signify that even though their beloved baby is not in their arms, he or she will always be in their hearts. We call our program Care Always because even when there is no hope for a cure, we will always provide care for these babies and families. This mother continues to raise money for the fund, and we have raised money in other ways as well. The proceeds from the fund do not just support the bereavement jewelry; we are also developing bags with support materials for every family we see in clinic and every family who loses a precious baby in our care.”

All aspects of this program focus on helping families through very difficult times, and there are many ways in which the community can support its efforts.

“A really important aspect of the program is to increase awareness of this kind of loss and that this care is available,” Bishop said. “Our program is new in the Triad, and while it is very specialized, there are many families in the community who do not know that they have access to this kind of care for their infants and pregnancy. A few tangible examples of ways to help include donations to help fund the memorial necklaces and coins, volunteers sewing beautiful blessing and burial gowns for babies of all sizes, materials for memory-making activities, donations to help families pay for cremation or burial, or donations to buy heartbeat recorders so that families can record their infant's heartbeats from their ultrasounds. “ The Outsiders”

Teen rivalry in a small, southern town comes to life in Twin City Stage’s upcoming production of S. E. Hinton’s The Outsiders.

Set in rural Oklahoma in the mid-1960s, this dramatic interpretation by Christopher Sergel is seen through the eyes of young Ponyboy, a Greaser on the wrong side of life. The drama centers on the ongoing conflict between the underprivileged Greasers and the rich kid Socs in rural Oklahoma. When a territorial battle goes horribly awry, Ponyboy and his friends have to grow up very quickly with nothing going for them but their hope and their friends.

Twin City Stage will offer just one performance for the public on Saturday, March 5th at 7pm at the Arts Council Theatre.

The cast, however, will be performing the show five times.

“We produced The Outsiders last season and offered three public performances,” said Marketing Director Kristina Ebbink.

“Since the show was based on a popular teen novel, we decided to add one performance for schools. The school show sold out almost immediately, so we added a second one. That one sold out in an hour! We realized there was a definite need for this type of programming.”

The book (and the play) deal with many issues that teenagers face because it was written by a teenager. Susan Eloise Hinton started writing The Outsiders when she was just 15. Popular from the beginning, the book -- which is now considered a classic in juvenile fiction -- sold four million copies in the United States alone when it was published in 1967.

This season, Twin City Stage is offering four performances for schools, and all of them have sold out. The cast is excited to know that they’ll be playing to full houses and are helping to spread the word about the Saturday evening performance.

“They want a sold out run,” laughed Director Jessica Grant, who also works in the theatre company’s education department. “It’s a great goal, and I’m glad they’re working to make it happen.”

Beau Renegar, a Reynolds high school student, plays the role of Ponyboy. “Originally, I auditioned for the role of Johnny because I played him in last season’s production,” said Beau.

“I was pleasantly surprised to be cast as Ponyboy instead. The rehearsal schedule is demanding but a lot of fun. We work hard but always enjoy ourselves. My favorite scene would have to be where Johnny finds Ponyboy looking at the sunset outside the church, and they discuss Robert Frost’s poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay.”

Ponyboy recites Frost’s simple yet profound poem to Johnny, who later writes a letter to Ponyboy, referring back to the poem and urging him to “stay gold,” that is, hopeful and innocent, despite the violence that has surrounded them. The line has become permanently associated with both the book and the play. CVNC.org said of last season’s production, “S.E. Hinton’s moving story remained thought-provoking, heartbreaking and inspiring.” Renegar joins a cast that is working hard to engage audiences with this year’s production. “I look forward to seeing the production come to life in me and my friends.”

Last year, the Guinness Book of World Records celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of its first published edition. The book originated over an argument regarding the fastest bird of prey and has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. More than one hundred million copies have been sold, and it’s been translated into forty languages. Some of the records are repeated in each edition but as much as eighty percent of the content is new every year.

What is the appeal? After all, some of the records set are dangerous or downright odd! Why do so many people around the world feel the urge to test themselves in such a manner? Some winners have honestly stated that they simply want their fifteen minutes of fame. Others like the idea of living forever in a record book...almost like a legacy to pass on to future descendants. A few pseudophilosophers use phrases such as “transcending limitations” and “becoming more than mere humans” when listing their motives behind breaking a world record.

Whatever the reason behind it, there is a fascination with those willing to push the limits of the mundane and normal.

Perhaps some of the attention given is more of a sideshow circus mentality, but there is no doubt that the Guinness Book of World Records remains a top selling publication today, sixty years after its inception.

L et’s jump right in and check out some of these trailblazers in record holding! An American woman, Lee Redmond, set the record for having the longest fingernails. It took her thirty years to grow her nails to a whopping twenty-eight feet, four and a half inches! Unfortunately, her nails broke in a 2009 car accident. I am confused as to how she was able to drive in the first place...or write...or even use the restroom without causing significant damage to tender areas. peaking of delicate body parts, one hundred and two S people in England set a record for Most Naked Riders on a Theme Park Ride. Over a hundred people rode a roller coaster sans clothing and made it into the great record book.

I have a few concerns here. Firstly, I would imagine that the safety bar being brought down was a delicate procedure.

Secondly, I hope and pray that the amusement park staff cleaned the seats of the coaster thoroughly once the naked riders disembarked!

He may be a fashion designer, but I say that hair is a faux pas. an’s best friend has even gotten in on the record M breaking act! Charlie, a golden retriever, has the World’s Loudest Bark, at 113.1 decibels!

The World’s Largest Luggage was made in China and stands over six feet tall. I imagine this is the sort of luggage that the Kardashians use when they travel.

BEHIND THE SCENE “Can you possibly take 10 pounds off of me in the photo before you put it in the magazine?” These are the most common things I hear and, believe me, I know the importance of having your lips on and not having spinach in your teeth, so I always oblige (well, except for the 10 pounds request – I have no control over that one). Then there are those ladies who share a bit of their lives with me, often leading to a hug, a smile and sometimes, even a few tears.

PETERSON After almost ten years of writing for Forsyth Woman magazine, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, interviewing and sharing the stories of local businesses, people, and charities that make our community a great place to live. But some of the best stories are ones no one will ever know or read because they happen one night a month when I have the privilege to meet and take photos of the ladies who attend Girls’ Night Out (GNO).

For the past seven years, Forsyth Woman magazine has partnered with local restaurants for GNO, a time of great food, good friends, and prizes. As the ladies enjoy their evening, I visit and ask to take their pictures. While most of the time I am welcome, sometimes my request is met with an “I really don’t like to have my picture taken.” That is completely fine, but most ladies love to get their photo taken, and they all make similar comments: “Wait a minute, I need to put my lips on!” or “Do I have anything in my teeth?” and 128 / ForsythWoman.com

One group of ladies in their mid60s were excited to have a friend with them who hadn’t been out in a while, so they were eager to get their photo taken. After the photo, one lady took my hand and said, “I haven’t been out very much in a few months. My husband passed away…he was my best friend and I really haven’t felt like getting out.

My friends insisted that I come with them tonight, and I’m glad I did. I haven’t laughed in a long time, and I thank you for coming to our table.”

I gave her a hug and cried, because no one cries alone with me around.

Then there were the ladies who were obviously celebrating something as I approached the table. They answered, “Yes!” to the photo taking before I even had the chance to ask. One lady had a wrap on her head, and all her friends were huddled around her. Once the photo was taken, the woman with her head in a wrap touched my arm and said, “I finished my chemo today for breast cancer, and my friends brought me out to celebrate. I might not feel like going out tomorrow because

the chemo can make me sick, but I hope to have beaten cancer, so we are celebrating.” Another hug with tears followed.

Then you have those ladies who, with all their commitments to their families, just don’t get to see each other very much. Once I walked up to a table full of chatty women and before I could ask about taking a photo, I heard their story. “We all went to college together many years ago and have been talking about getting together and catching up, but this is the first time we could all meet at the same place. We are going to try and do this every month because life is short and you never know. One of our friends would’ve been here, but she was diagnosed with cancer and we lost her before we could all get together.

We’re here celebrating her life.”

Those are just a few of the great stories shared with me. Through all the wonderful ladies I’ve met in the seven years of GNO, I have learned a few things about women.

First, we like our photos taken, but we must have our lips on; second, we love our time with our friends, catching up on life over good food; and third, we know these moments will go by quickly, so we need to appreciate the good times and celebrate life, because our friends are there for us like no one else will be. So, ladies, I will continue to come by and visit with you all, and you will hear “May I take your picture?” And you will know that your stories are heard and tucked away in my memory, and I appreciate each one of you.

If meeting your friends and spending some girl time out at a great restaurant isn’t enough to get you to a Girls’ Night Out (GNO), then maybe the possibility of winning a prize is!

GNO is the Place to Go “We have been doing GNO for a little over seven years, spotlighting a different local restaurant each month and giving away prizes, which is something all the ladies look forward to. Forsyth Woman’s advertising partners are given the opportunity to donate prizes for our ‘prize board’ each month. As the ladies arrive, they are given four prize tickets, like raffle tickets. They write their name and phone number on the ticket and then put the tickets in the baggies on the prize board below the prizes they would like to win. By letting the ladies choose the prize they would like, they don’t win a random prize that they don’t want or need. If you want, you can put all your tickets into one baggie to increase the chances that you win that prize, or divide them up for four different prizes,” said Brooke Eagle, Associate Editor for Forsyth Woman magazine. Prizes vary from gift cards to local restaurants, boutiques/shops/ retailers and salons/spas, as well as services from companies.

“The moment the ladies wait for comes around 7 pm when the tickets are drawn, the winners are written on poster board, and I walk around the restaurant to give away the prizes; or, if the winner has left, they are notified the following day. GNO is a great way for our readers to experience a restaurant that maybe they’ve never been to and leave with a gift card to a local retailer or restaurant that might be new to them, too,” Brooke commented.

Throughout the year, Forsyth Woman magazine will have fundraisers held at GNO. “If we are doing a fundraiser, ladies have the opportunity to get more tickets.

For example, we do food drives a couple of times a year, and you can get an extra prize ticket for each can of food you bring.

We’ve also done toy drives in December and ladies receive extra tickets for bringing in toys. These nights are a great way for the magazine and our readers to give back to the community through the donations, and the ladies also get extra tickets to win prizes,” stated Brooke.

In the seven years since the first GNO, the prize board has grown as much as the attendance has. “We started out doing 5 or 6 prizes a month, and now we do anywhere from 12-16 prizes each month,” said Brooke.

“It’s always a treat to see how excited the ladies are when they win. It’s great!”
