My

family grew this past month by two little balls of fur! Yes, two beautiful kittens stole our hearts on a Friday afternoon at the Forsyth County Animal Shelter. Our family cat, Ruby, had passed away unexpectedly during my girls’ last year in college and much to my daughter’s dismay, we had not felt the need to add to our family again. After all, we were empty nesters for the most part and had dreams of travel.

Having a pet was just one more detail to take care of when you’re going to be away from home.

Anyone who reads my offering each month knows I have two daughters, and so when Morgan decided to go cat shopping, Briana decided that she and new husband Jonathan were ready for a pet as well. Welcome to our homes, Lola and Nala! Lola resides at our house and is officially Morgan’s kitty, and Nala resides with Briana and Jonathan in Greensboro. Nala finally got to come to Grandma Bralley’s house for the first time and started exploring and even tolerated Cousin Lola’s playful advances. We all look forward to falling more in love with our two furriest members with each passing day.

The Journey Contiunues, Part 2

this point, I’m halfway through my six initial chemo treatments. Halfway, yay! I go every three weeks and am basically there for most of the day. The day usually starts with a first appointment around 8 am for port-a-cath care, which is a device implanted just under your skin that allows the chemo to be administered easily and without having to be stuck by a lot of needles elsewhere. They are also able to draw blood, which is tested each time to keep a check on several factors.

Then it’s back to the waiting room until my appointment with the oncologist. Amazing Dr. Alexandra Thomas continues to encourage me and make me and my entourage feel like we have this! Yes, once again, so very blessed! Both my daughters, Briana and Morgan, new son-in-law, Jonathan, and husband, Tim, have accompanied me on this little venture every single time! Once again, it’s back to the waiting room until they are ready for me in the chemo pods. Four different drugs are administered, one at a time, along with a couple of other meds, and the day usually ends around 3–4pm. I’m grateful for only a day once every three weeks.

The Side Effects So far, I usually feel okay that night and sometimes even the next. And then it hits. Welcome the side effects… nausea, diarrhea and hair loss to name a few. The first two are selfexplanatory, and honestly, there are some good drugs to manage those. The hair loss was probably my most dreaded, because, for me, it’s all about the hair. Don’t get me wrong, I love clothes and accessories, but I love beautiful hair. For me, it started falling out sooner than I expected (around two weeks after my first treatment), but the overall time it took to fall out took longer than expected.

I still have some fuzz left at the end of three treatments. I’ve always known I was blessed with amazingly thick hair, but no idea just how much I could lose before it was really noticeable to others.

This brings to mind passage Matthew 10:30-31. I’d love to know my number!

All about the Hair Luckily for me and others in need of a wig, Billie-Jo and Denise at Our Wig Boutique were ready to help!

My daughters and wonderfully sweet and supportive Forsyth Mags team went along on an excursion to pick out my hair for the coming months. I have to say we had a lot of fun trying on my alter egos; rocker chick, sassy bob and curly blonde babe. Keela and I both had a little fun with that one, as we often say we are the sisters we never had, so it was fun to be her twin for a brief moment. I feel like I tried on what felt like fifty wigs and both Billie-Jo and Denise were very patient through the whole process. In the end, my daughter was the voice of reason and said I was most likely going to be self-conscious about wearing it, so I probably should go for the one most like my own hair. We finally agreed, and I’ve been really happy with the final selection.

The Buzz It was maybe two weeks after noticeable hair loss that I was finally ready to buzz it off. My insanely talented and compassionate hairdresser Melissa at Evolve Salon in Clemmons had said she would be on-call to do it.

Honestly, I was a little scared it was going to hurt because your head gets very tender during the process of it falling out. Ladies will understand this, but you know that feeling you get when you’ve worn your hair in a tight ponytail all day, and you take it down? That’s what I equate your head

feeling like. As it turns out, Melissa was very gentle, and it didn’t hurt at all. Morgan held my hand on the big day, and I was surprised that I didn’t even cry; but at this point, I was just ready to get rid of it. I was tired of the “Robin hair” tumbleweeds rolling through my house.

I continue to be amazed at the kindnesses of family and friends as I journey through this. I thank all those that I have yet to get official thank-you notes to and for the many who have anonymously sent me cards and well wishes. I thank the many who constantly pray for my family and me…. I feel them all like warm hugs every single day, and I remain hope-full and grate-full!

What Happened When One Local School Limited Devices for One Month

world has been taken over by devices designed to make our lives easier and communication faster. Look at any group of teenagers sitting together; odds are they have their heads bent over their smartphones.

Adults aren’t much better. We keep our phones on the table at restaurants and sleep with them beside our beds at night. Is this technology really helping us, or could it be doing harm?

FOUR EASY WAYS TO MANAGE SCREEN TIME 1. Create a family charging station.

Studies show that keeping your phone charging next to your bed at night leads to sleep deprivation and even prevents you from falling into restorative REM sleep. If you use your phone as an alarm clock, buy a real one instead.

2. Put down phones at meals. Having real conversations with your family, friends and colleagues is invaluable.

3. Keep your phone out of sight while driving. Place it in a bag if having it on the passenger seat is tempting.

Somewhat counterintuitively, there are even apps for this that will send automatic responses to anyone who texts you while you’re driving to let them know that you can’t respond at the moment. Two to try: Cell Control and Drive Safe Mode.

4. Establish a household phone/ device curfew. Have each member of the family dock their phones by a reasonable time (such as 10pm or earlier if you have younger family members). You can even establish “tech-free” family time on a weeknight or weekend day when all family members dock their phones, and you spend time together screen-free. Bring back family or friend game night!

In the fall, Forsyth Country Day School (FCDS) hosted a public screening of Screenagers, the award-winning documentary that examines the struggle parents face with limiting screen time for their kids, the negative effects of too much screen time, and what we can do to help our kids and ourselves.

That documentary got FCDS Upper School guidance counselor Martha Metzler thinking. “It started with a lot of self-reflection,” said Martha. “I was finding myself outside with my kids, and instead of interacting with them, I was taking pictures of them playing.”

Martha saw it in her students, too. “When the kids were hanging out in my room, they weren’t looking each other in the eyes anymore. They were sitting next to each other Snapchatting.”

Devices have their place and their usefulness, but overusing a phone or any device with a screen has real dangers.

POOR SLEEP Studies show that devices negatively impact sleep and prevent us from reaching the deep REM stage. Experts recommend not keeping phones by your bed and powering down ALL screens at least one hour before bedtime.

ADDICTIVE BEHAVIOR When you use a device, said Martha, it releases dopamine just like any other addictive activity. Kids are especially vulnerable because they feel this stimulation of the brain’s pleasure center more than adults do.

social media sites -- actually, makes us feel bad about ourselves. “Whether it’s Pinterest mom-guilt or a teenage girl who sees pictures of a swimsuit model who knows how to pose and use filters, it affects self-image and body image,” said Martha. “It makes us compare our lives to someone else’s highlight reel.”’

MESSY SOCIAL INTERACTIONS “Devices are cheating kids out of awkward conversations, like asking a girl out or having to apologize to someone face to face,” said Martha. “They need these messy social interactions to learn to resolve conflict in a healthy way.”

In response to Screenagers, the FCDS community attempted to reduce screen time for one month. So, what was it like with less Facebook and more faceto-face?

“When I got home, I would charge my phone and not check it often,” said Middle School Director Dan Quesnel, the father of two FCDS students. “I found that I spent more time talking to my kids.”

Upper School English teacher and mother of two FCDS students Meredith Harvey reported that she got off Facebook. “I realized it was causing me a lot of stress and sadness.”

“Since the Screenagers viewing, we have a phone check-in station for all of us,” said Mary Ann Speakman, the mother of two FCDS students and one of the school nurses.

Marc Winbush, a technology specialist and Middle School varsity boys’ basketball coach, witnessed the positive impact while at dinner with his team.

“A senior told a middle school player, ‘Hey, we don’t pull our phones out at the dinner table,’” said Marc. “I was shocked and really proud to see that tutelage.”

“Trying was the point,” Martha said. “We have an incredible school community, and we all have so much to offer one another. I felt like we were cheating one another out of meaningful interactions.

Taking this month of self-reflection was a really valuable experience.”

DIRECTIONS Heat oven to 425 F. Brush oil on bottom and sides of 15x10 inch sheet pan. Unroll pizza crust dough in pan; press dough to edges of pan. Bake 6 to 8 minutes or until light golden brown. Meanwhile, combine Cheeseball Mix (Topping packet used later) with cream cheese until well combined. Layer toppings in order listed over partially baked crust. CORBETT What sounds like a deeply complex tale is, remarkably, simple enough for the whole family to understand and enjoy! “The story is of a young dreamer, a man named Joseph—the same Joseph whose story is told in the Book of Genesis,” said Appanaitis. “Joseph, as you may remember, was born into a family of 12 boys, all the sons of Jacob. Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son, and, to show everyone that he is pleased with him, Jacob gives Joseph a splendid multicolored coat. However, this coat, along with Joseph’s talk of dreams he has had showing he will be the ruler of his brothers, arouses the jealousy of the other eleven. They decide to kill him, but before they get the chance, they meet up with a group traveling to Egypt. A plan is hatched, and they sell their brother as a slave instead.” After several years and great change in Joseph’s life, he sees his brothers again and puts them through a demanding test of their character!

Welborn and Twin City Stage, this performance features lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the irresistible family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son,” said Twin City Stage’s Mariedith Appanaitis. “Directed by Nick Zayas, this new production is a re-imagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colors. Sold into slavery by his jealous brothers, Joseph perseveres and, using wit and faith, rises to become Pharaoh’s secondin-command. Featuring unforgettable songs such as ‘Any Dream Will Do,’ ‘Jacob and Sons’ and ‘Close Every Door,’ this delightful musical parable is one of the most enduring shows of all time.”

Nick ayas will direct this production. “Directing his first main-stage musical at Twin City Stage holds a special significance for Nick,” said Appanaitis. “It was a (then Little Theatre) production of Peter Pan that initially sparked his interest in the first place. Smitten with the transformative power of live theater, he quickly signed up for acting classes. It was in this building, under Gesh Spiegel’s guidance, that Nick’s passion began to take shape. After working backstage, appearing in numerous main stage and youth productions, he was admitted to the competitive high school drama department at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. There, he studied intensively with Bob Moyer, Tanya Belov, Matt Bulluck, Greg Walter, Bob Francesconi and Dikki Ellis, among others.”

Nick’s excitement and youthful energy combined with Musical Director Margaret Gallagher’s expertise will surely make for a fantastic performance! BY KATIE MAXEY, MS, RD, CHES Spring is here, and warmer temperatures are on the way. The more time we spend outside in the heat, the more we find ourselves reaching for a cool drink. Have you taken a look at what’s in your drink? Many of the most popular drinks are high in sugar. Experts at Brenner FIT can help you decode nutrition facts labels to find low-sugar drink options.

Q. Which drinks are low in sugar?

Q: What makes a drink high in sugar?

A. Many drinks that are advertised as “light” or use the word

A: Take a look at a drink’s nutrition-facts label to determine

the amount of sugar. First, notice the serving size on the nutrition facts label. Most drinks will show one serving as 8 ounces. Second, find the amount of sugar that is listed for an 8-ounce serving. If a drink is high in sugar, it will have more than three grams of sugar. If a drink is low in sugar, it will have less than 3 grams of sugar.

Q. Why are low-sugar drinks recommended?

A. Many high-sugar beverages contain extra calories without providing any other nutrients. We call these “empty calories.” Drinking beverages that are high in sugar can cause excess weight gain and increase our risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Gears Up for Prom Night Pandemonium

downtown Winston-Salem prepares for a flood of high school students filling restaurants and event centers this prom season, Jeffrey Adams on Fourth has everything covered.

Located at the corner of Fourth and Marshall, Jeffrey Adams is the heart of the Winston-Salem’s restaurant scene and features a dynamic menu that any prom crowd will enjoy. “We’re not fine dining, we’re not mom and pop’s, we’re right in the middle,” coowner Adam Andrews said. “We hit everybody’s needs. That’s one thing I’ve always loved about us.”

Andrews, who also helps out as a chef on occasion, said the seafood risotto has traditionally been the restaurant’s best seller, though he is partial to the ribeye, “a prime-grade ribeye that is very affordable.”

Jeffrey Adams also features a fourounce filet plate that many danceprone prom-goers might be drawn to.

The filet also offers lobster, crab cake and scallop additions to customize your meal.

And Jeffrey Adams boasts homegrown vegetables throughout the spring, thanks to Andrews Farm in King. Andrews estimated that 70-80 percent of the menu’s produce is grown on the farm’s 16 raised beds, including tomatoes, cucumbers and a majority of the lettuce.

The menu also has sandwiches covered, with the downtown burger featuring smoked gouda pimiento cheese, as well as the crab cake sandwich and hickory chicken wrap.

Jeffrey Adams also features a large number of vegetarian options, ranging from small plates and salads to savory entrées. “‘Feed the masses,’ as I always say. There’s something for everybody,” Andrews said.

The three-story restaurant offers flexible seating arrangements that can host the smallest groups of just two or four diners to large 30-person parties hoping to spend the night in the company of all their friends.

For groups looking to enjoy a private setting, Jeffrey Adams boasts a large first-floor wine cellar capable of hors d’oeuvres mingling, buffet-style menus or a traditional sit-down meal. Guests who book the wine cellar for the prom-night celebration will also enjoy access to a private T and an iPod dock, where you decide what music accompanies dinner.

Groups, too, will have the opportunity to customize their menu, if desired. A number of plates, Andrews said, will include a salad, entrée, and drink for around $21. And parents will have the option of prepaying for the meals and gratuity, leaving their students free to eat and enjoy the night.

Just two blocks from one of downtown’s largest parking decks at the corner of Fourth and Poplar, Jeffrey Adams will make prom night stress-free, regardless of the time frame students allot for dinner.

Since 2014, The Bella Hair Co. and Beauty Studio in Winston-Salem has been helping high school girls get ready for one of the most glamorous nights of their life—prom. After spending months picking out the right dress and shoes, it is now time to decide on the perfect hairstyle.

“One of the many services we provide at the salon is prom hairstyles. First, we’ll look at the color and style of their dress and determine what hairstyle would look best. We talk with our clients to see what look they are going for and give feedback.

Also, girls can bring in pictures of styles they want us to re-create. Also, our stylists can do prom makeup with MAC products. For the makeup, we can do full applications, eye-only, or just lashes,” said owner Ashley Hurst.

Prom season is always a busy time for the salon. Hurst suggests as soon as you know the date of prom, schedule your appointment; the earlier, the better. With these appointments, trial hair and make-up are not needed. Plan on spending an hour to an hourand-a-half for getting both hair and make-up done.

While there are some myths surrounding what works best for styling your hair, it is important to remember to arrive at your appointment with clean, trimmed, and dry hair.

Follow your normal routine and use products you usually do. For example, if you use oil for frizzy hair, still do so on prom day. As for your face, follow your normal routine, as well. Having clean and moisturized skin is a plus for applying make-up. Also, wear a button-down shirt that is easy to remove.

When it comes to the different lengths of hair, stylists at The Bella Hair Co. and Beauty Studio have experience in creating styles for both long and short. According to Hurst, there are several trends to look for during the 2017 season. Some include the retro middle part and side part, the Bohemian braid twist, and the fish tail.

“Right now, the messy wave with a half-up style and pieces around the face is a popular hairstyle. It is very whimsical. Also, we have done the French braids, either in all-up or half-up styles. Side

teenagers. You spend months picking out the perfect dress, the right color of flowers, and the right hairstyle. It quickly becomes a night to remember. However, it is also a night full of responsibility and making the right decisions. nfortunately, the influence of alcohol and peer pressure is heightened, and 70% of teens are expected to illegally drink and drive at prom. Also, the use of drugs increases. Research from Mothers against Drunk Driving and Chrysler found that nearly 49 percent of teenagers are encouraged by friends to try drugs on prom night. However, there are ways to plan ahead and help your child stay safe and sober.

One of the most important ways to stay safe and sober is to be prepared. Peer pressure is a huge part of a teenager’s life. There is a need to be accepted among peers.

However, teenagers need to be aware of the fact that while they are being responsible, they also need to watch out for others around them. Some people will decide to drink or use drugs and will encourage others.

It is okay to say, “No” and walk away, when faced with the question.

Adolescents can also be leaders for others. Call it positive peer pressure. If a teenager is having a great time at prom and staying sober, others will follow.

They will see you can have an even better night without being intoxicated and the memories will stay with you. Sometimes seeing and hearing advice for other teenagers is more impactful than advice from adults.

Fellow teen and prom lover, Savannah Norris, advises, “prom is known for the after parties. It’s easy to find yourself drinking, even if you didn’t intend to. The most important thing to remember is, if it happens, don’t be too embarrassed or nervous to call someone for help. If you feel uncomfortable about a situation, call someone. If you don’t feel sober enough to drive and don’t want your parents to find out, be safe about it and call anyway.

Sometimes it’s easier to call an older brother, aunt, or uncle. Parental consequences are always better than a DUI or, even worse, death.

Parents can have an influence on their teenagers by talking with them about the dangers of drinking. Discuss the rules of the night with your teenager, both your rules and the school’s. Make them aware of the consequences if they violate them. Also, reassure them that if they are under the influence of alcohol, it is okay to call you, instead of driving. Parents should also be aware of the details for the entire evening. Know the location of the events, who is going to be there, and if needed, check out the locations ahead of time.

One way to help prevent drinking is for teenagers to have a fun evening planned and to stick with it. Some ideas could include dinner at a nice restaurant, then going to prom, and ending the night with an after-event, such as bowling, going for ice-cream, or having a late night breakfast at a friend’s house. Also, consider going in a group. Yes, you can still go with a date, but going in with a group of friends gives you something to look forward to and gives you a chance to hang out.

Be sure to know who is driving at all times. Plan out all the transportation ahead of time. This way you’ll know if a limo service is needed, or a parent pick-up. Teenagers should never get in a car with someone who has been drinking. If a friend is intoxicated, make sure they don’t get behind the wheel.

Car accidents are the number-one cause of death for adolescents, ages 12 to 19, and a third of the alcohol-related fatalities happen during prom season.

The responsibilities of prom night can be broken down into three simple ideas: 1) being intoxicated can ruin the experience for yourself, your date, and your friends; 2) you’ll worry, and possibly cause pain for, those who care about you; and 3) you don’t need help from alcohol and drugs to make prom great.

Prom night is one of the best times of your life. Dance like no one is watching, take silly pictures, and have fun with your friends. Also, make it a priority to stay safe and sober. After all, prom is supposed to be memorable. Twenty years from that night, don’t you still want to remember the good times?

view. The immediate impulse is to desire at

least two of every type. In the season when

a burst of color is welcomed, we want nothing

more than to surround our porches, walkways,

front and back yards with healthy plants, bushes, and

trees. Early spring is the most effective time to aid in

its health and nourishment. Once the spring rains have

stopped, we need to consider addressing an alternative

means to maintain a plant’s health. The days of lugging heavy hoses from one side of the yard to the other, or transporting milk jugs or five-gallon buckets full

of water have been replaced by a simpler method.

It is time to consider combining the conservation of water with establishing a slow-drip irrigation system. From owning a small yard to several acres, you may be surprised at the ease of getting started.

BOTTLES We often think the spring rains and the comfortable temperatures will not cause our newly planted flowers or seedlings to become stressed, wilt, and die, but it is possible if they become too severe. One solution is to create a slowdrip irrigation system to ensure the foliage remains happy and healthy. A half-gallon milk jug or a two-liter soda container, with lids, are two viable options for this task. Wash the container and the lid thoroughly; then, drill four to six semismall holes in the container. (There is no right or wrong way to use a bottle system. Some individuals use the lid hole for access while others prefer to cut off the bottom to fill and clean.) Test to see how fast the water comes out.

Remember, you do not want the holes too small; otherwise, they will become clogged. And, too many holes will saturate the ground and drown your plants or create mold. Bury the container as far as you like. Experiment with a few bottle systems before you decide to use a large number in your garden or around your newly planted blueberry bushes.

BUCKETS While it may not be aesthetically pleasing to see a bucket situated beside a tree, this system offers great rewards. Newly planted trees need greater saturation; therefore, simply drill a few holes in the bottom of your five-gallon bucket, fill with water, and place on a slight incline or raised area. Buckets can also be easily cleaned.

Remember, with the top open, it will be susceptible to falling leaves, debris, bugs, and rainwater. (Using a lid is optional, too.) In the dog days of summer, you will be grateful to have this system.

(Label and store the buckets. You may be using them in the fall or next spring.)

SLOW-DRIP IRRIGATION LINES A raised container can serve as a “gravity drip” and offer a row of plants, whether in a garden or, for instance, berry bushes, a consistent amount of water daily. Having a valve to turn on and off may be a worthwhile consideration. The supplies needed, such as the tubing and anchors, are relatively cheap. How often you fill the “tank” determines the size and use of the container. The options are a five-gallon bucket, a rain barrel, or a 100- to 300-gallon container. It would be worthwhile to use the downspouts on either your house or shed as a collection source. The vitamins and minerals found in rainwater are exactly what your plants need.

February 3rd (as on the first Friday of every month) kicked off a new exhibit, Jewels for Walls & to Wear at Piedmont Craftsmen on N. Trade Street. Elizabeth Lyne from Cary, NC, an exhibiting member since 2005, showed her many unique jewelry pieces. Susan Levi-Goerlich from Columbia, Maryland, an exhibiting member since 2010, displayed her beautiful fiber art.

These displays will run through February 25th.

As the Gallery Hop was underway, guests enjoyed strolling through the streets of the downtown Winston-Salem Arts District, visiting with friends and viewing the newest exhibits. The Arts District is alive with energy, creativity, and artistic talent. It’s an exciting evening that highlights a gem within our community.

The next Gallery Hop will be March 3rd, from 7:00–10:00 pm.

Piedmont Craftsmen will be showcasing their New Members’ Exhibit March 3rd–31st. 100 craftsmen from all over the country were given the opportunity to become an Exhibiting Member. The process was challenging for both the applicants and the judges, but after careful consideration, the standards committee invited 21 artists to become exhibiting members. These artists will display their work in clay, fiber, wood, mixed media and jewelry.

Gallery Hop is a collective effort coordinated by the Downtown Arts District Association.

Summer Camps are GREAT

the brief months of summer approaching fast, many parents find they are now faced with a new task: keeping their kids responsibly looked after and entertained. While many turn to babysitters for parental supervision, summer camps are another popular choice, due to the wide variety of options available, including traditional camp, surf camp, basketball camp, and even film camp. Here are seven reasons summer camps seem to trump other childcare options.

1. The Environment is Welcoming.

Camps, even the non-traditional ones, are very supportive.

They encourage kids to be who they are and to know who they are not. For instance, basketball camp isn’t for everyone, but even players with very little skill are still welcomed. Camps teach kids to acknowledge their weaknesses and to work to be better, not to be the best.

With so much technology available, kids can be guilty of staying cooped up inside, choosing only to play video games and text their friends. Camps show kids how to have fun outside without technology, and how to spend quality face time with friends.

2. Try a new thing.

Camps encourage kids to venture out of their comfort zones and have new experiences. However, they also teach them how to persevere through activities they know they do not care for with good spirits. It’s important for kids to discover new habits and to respect ones that others like, even if they themselves don’t.

3. Learn independence.

Camp counselors are really good at giving kids the right amount of rein. Should a traditional route be taken, this newfound independence might be first discovered on a canoe ride. With no one else to row, the kids hold the paddles themselves and decide which end of the lake to explore.

4. Leadership skills There are born leaders and born followers. The right influence separates leaders from dictators, and prevents followers from having submissive attitudes. Camp is a great place to learn how to be in charge and carry the group, not just yourself.

6. Make Great Friends Outside of your Normal Circles.

It’s easy to fall into social cliques at school, excluding certain kids from your group. However, at camp, there are kids from all walks of life that are forced to be on teams together, to bunk together, and to eat together. It’s much more difficult to exclude people at camp, forcing kids to make lifelong friends outside of their normal circles.

7. Teamwork Camp is commonly a competition. There are lots of games and teams. Camp counselors face off, and kids collaborate to win these games. Whether it’s editing a video, scoring a goal, or racing canoes, kids are practicing teamwork to accomplish those tasks.

Maybe it’s the connection between the counselors and the campers, the close friends, or the games they play, or maybe it’s none of that. Either way, camps seem to build character and strong moral principles in children, offering parental influence in a fun and enjoyable way. It’s no wonder parents and children everywhere opt for camp when summer rolls around.

ossibly the most influential part of summer camps are the counselors. They offer unique guidance and advice that you can’t get just anywhere. Camp counselors are more than babysitters. They are people to look up to and follow; people who plan experiences for children. With that said, there are still a lot of concerns associated with camp counselors and questions to be answered about them. Don’t worry! We’ve got your top five answered right here.

What does it take to be a camp counselor?

Generally, there is an age requirement to be a camp counselor, though that doesn’t necessarily determine if someone will get the job. A counselor needs to be experienced in the area(s) they are teaching, whether that be kayaking, music, etc. They also need to work well with children, providing quality advice and leadership.

It takes someone special to play such an important role in the lives of our youth; someone who has enough experience to instill valuable character traits in children.

What are qualities that make a BAD camp counselor?

Camp counselors affect children in so many ways. Having said that, it makes sense that someone who is not a good role model would make for a bad camp counselor. Camp counselors need to be leaders and critical thinkers who possess kindness, empathy, and energy. Someone who cannot think on his or her feet, be kind and understanding to parents and children, and be involved with the group might not make for the best camp counselor. This job is not for everyone.

It’s understandable that parental preferences will sometimes conflict with counseling methods. Should you encounter any issues with a camp counselor’s approach to confronting an issue involving your child, just talk to them or an advisor.

Issues can usually be resolved very quickly, should they be addressed directly.

I’m having trouble leaving my child there.

Depending on the age of your child, it can be difficult to leave them all day with someone who might be as young as fifteen or eighteen years old, especially if it’s an overnight camp.

However, counselors are hired because of their ability to take care of children and be good role models for them. Above that, counselors have been trained, despite their abilities, and can turn to supervisors should they need any help. You don’t have anything to worry about.

Together, camp counselors and campers bond to make summer camp a valuable experience. Campers learn strong moral principles like integrity, loyalty, responsibility, and respect, while the counselors learn how important it is to have those same qualities to inspire in other people. Camp counselors are great for many reasons. Hopefully, these questions and answers helped shine some light on a few of those.

Five Tools Every Parent Needs

not going to lie to you, parenting is tough. The “picture perfect families” in glossy ads? That’s just false advertising. Real families are messy. There will be days without showers, nights without sleep, and at least one child picking their nose in family photos. “Real parenting” is like finding out you’re trekking Nepal when you’ve packed for Paris! Make sure to pack these five things and make this trip a little easier.

1.) ORGANIZATION – “Life happens,” but by implementing a few systems, it will be less disruptive.

Establish routines and rituals. Create a family schedule that includes: • time to rise • breakfast and morning routines • school, homework, play times, chores • bedtime ritual, time for lights-out • parent quality time Critical information and items you will need at a moment’s notice should be kept in specific and consistent location.

Such as: • Bills, Family Emergency Contacts, Medical Records, and Calendar of Events.

• Hats, coats, shoes, keys, book bags, diaper bags, medicines and First Aid 2.) MODEL HEALTHY CHOICES – It’s easy to back-burner our own emotional and physical health. “Who has time?” We must make time because children will always do what we do, and only sometimes do what we say. This includes healthy meal choices, rest, exercise, and self-care. When our children see us making healthy choices, they will make them, too.

And trust me, they are always watching.

3.) BACK UP OR SUPPORT – Don’t go it alone, and don’t be afraid to call for backup. If you are overwhelmed, ask for help. Everyone needs help sometimes. Have a few “go-to” friends, family and/or resources at your fingertips if you feel like you are in over your head.

4.) FAMILY CODE OF ETHICS – Establishing a family code will be very helpful for problem-solving even when you are not around. For example: In our family…we tell the truth; we use our words (not our hands); we don’t take what doesn’t belong to us; we are respectful of ourselves, others, and our environment; we use our good judgment; we always try to do our best; etc.

Here’s how it works, let’s say your child is at school. A friend suggests they take an extra dessert without paying for it.

“No one will know.” Your child will remember your family’s discussions about not taking what doesn’t belong to us and using good judgment. These important conversations may just keep them out of trouble.

5.) YOUR UNIQUE SKILLS – “You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” ~ Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne • CONFIDENCE – Trust that you are doing the best you can with the information you have, and try to be the best you can be. That’s all any of us can do.

• PATIENCE – No one doubts your love and devotion for your little beings; occasionally, however, your patience will be tried. Take a time out (for yourself) when you need one.

It’s okay to table tough discussions until everyone has a clear head.

• COMMUNICATION – Talk about everything. No one likes guessing or having to tip-toe around things unsaid. Praise and criticism should be authentic and timely. Sarcasm should be rarely, preferably never, used.

• LOGIC AND REASON – Little ones need your help understanding the consequences of their choices. Ask them why they made those choices (they may have a good reason we had not thought of). If their reasoning or the outcome was undesirable, ask them what they might do differently next time. With logic and reason, ultimately, they will be able to think for themselves.

• EMPATHY, HUMILITY AND (ABOVE ALL ELSE) HUMOR – Be open to understanding their point of view, listen without judgment, interpretation or interruption. Be willing to admit when you are wrong. Most importantly, don’t forget your sense of humor! You’re going to need it. Remember, this isn’t brain surgery; if it feels funny, it probably is. It’s okay to laugh!

Forget that picture perfect family in the glossy ad. Life is messy.

Families are messy. The road ahead may be slippery when wet.

But if you can keep your head and your humor, I promise you, it will be one fun ride!

The Do’s and Don’ts of Feeding Pets from the Table

pets are like members of our families. We treat them with the same kind and loving consideration we do our human relatives. We give our pets warm beds to sleep on, toys to play with, sometimes clothes to wear, and food to eat.

Occasionally, the foods we give them are foods we eat. But, did you know there are a few “human” foods that are harmful to pets? Before feeding your pets from the table, take a look below to see what’s healthy for them and what’s not.

DON’T FEED:

• Apples are safe for pets to eat, but be careful of the seeds and core. Ingesting a large amount of seeds is harmful and can cause blockages. Some pet owners will also remove the skin of the apple.

• Grapes and raisins should never be eaten. Within a few days of digestion, these fruits could possibly kill your animal. Vomiting and excessive urination will begin shortly after consumption.

Bananas are rich in carbs and fibers and can help with bowel movements. However, too much of them can cause stomach issues. Just remove the peel before feeding them to your animal and give in moderation.

• Berries, including blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, are all safe foods and can be served either fresh or frozen. They are full of various vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. But, like bananas, they need to be given in small amounts. Berries can also be used as treats for good behavior.

• Watermelons are mostly water and are safe to be consumed in larger quantities. This snack is great during the summer as another source of water. Again, be careful of the seeds and rind, which can create an intestinal obstruction.

• Oranges and citrus fruits can be sweet treats for pets, but are high in carbs and sugars. Smaller amounts are best and shouldn’t be problematic with regard to a pet’s blood sugar levels. Plus, have your cameras ready for when your animal tastes a lemon and reacts to the fruit’s sourness.

• Sweet potatoes are a food my dog, Gidget, loves. Every day, she eats one because of the vegetable’s health benefits. They are great for digestive health and are high in dietary fiber.

Another benefit is their sweet flavor. Just don’t add any butter or spices. White potatoes are okay for pets to eat, as well.

• Pumpkin is along the lines of sweet potatoes in its nutritional value. It is known to help with digestive and urinary health, as well as weight loss. Some tips to remember are to not give your animal the actual pumpkin, but give them canned, unsweetened pumpkin instead. Don’t use the pie filling. Pumpkin seeds, cooked fresh pumpkin, and pureed pumpkin are also fine.

• Meats, especially beef, chicken, turkey, venison, and pork are healthy for animals. Any of these meats can be cooked and used as snacks or meals. Bones should never be fed to pets.

• Peaches, cherries, plums, and other fruits with pits are very harmful. Their huge pits are choking and blockage hazards.

Also, they are poisonous and contain cyanide.

• Chocolate is a big no-no for pets. Even a small amount causes vomiting and diarrhea. Due to the toxic component theobromine in a cocoa bean, consuming large quantities can result in muscle tremors, seizures, irregular heartbeats, internal bleeding, or heart attack. Theobromine poisoning is often portrayed as hyperactivity. Wondering why chocolate isn’t harmful to humans? Our metabolism can break down theobromine better. A pet’s metabolism will process the food slowly, allowing more time for toxic build-up.

• Coffee is another dangerous food, because of the caffeine, created by theobromine. This beverage causes an effect similar to chocolate. It can bring about elevated blood pressure and elevated body temperature, as well as hyperactivity and seizures.

•Digesting nuts can create stomach issues and blockages for animals. While there are health advantages to this food, you need to be cautious about which types of nuts to give. This can be determined by whether an animal can easily digest them or not. Peanuts and peanut butter are great to eat, while macadamia nuts can develop into stomach problems and pancreatitis.

• If your pet accidentally eats a toxic food, pay attention to their behavior and symptoms. Get them to a vet immediately.

Sometimes an animal will get rid of the item on their own or will need treatment. To help prevent your cat or dog from getting into a harmful food, keep them out of the animal’s reach and check the ingredients on products.

As much as we love our animals and want to make them happy, there are some foods we shouldn’t feed them, for their benefit.

Keep your pets on a healthy diet, and when in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask your vet.

Sadly, Steve lost his battle with cancer last year; however, Keith continues to operate the business based on the values he and Steve have held since 1998.

S&K Cleaning focuses on deep cleaning, not just surface cleaning. Keith explained that, in essence, “Our clients get a spring cleaning every visit. We clean the things that there’s just no time to do on a routine basis, such as cleaning behind the washer and dryer or cleaning out the toaster oven tray.”

Keith also notifies clients if a potential problem is noticed with an appliance or some other home utility service. Keith stated, “I treat my customers like family.”

To achieve that high standard of cleaning, Keith books no more than four homes per day with a minimum of two hours per each home. There are no carryover products or equipment. The mops, vacuums, or brooms used are those at the client’s home; the same goes for cleaning products used. For clients who prefer environmentally friendly products, Keith is happy to accommodate those requests. Keith shared that only white towels are used, and those are bleached after each use.

Keith stated that S&K Cleaning provides their service based on clients’ requests. Some clients schedule cleaning once per month, although twice a month is the most typical for S&K clients. Home cleaning is the primary focus for S&K Cleaning; however, Keith also said that office cleaning is provided for some local businesses.

Keith explained that most referrals come from word of mouth. S&K Cleaning has clients throughout Forsyth County and is proud to have many long-term clients who happily provide referrals to their friends and family. Margaret, a client for 18 years, stated, “Keith is totally dependable. I trust him, he is thorough, and I have a better quality of life with my family as a result of using S&K Cleaning all these years.”

Fairytales, Folktales and Fables, Oh, My!

are a few phrases that can transport us to another place in time, a simpler time.

“Once upon a time…” is one of those. We remember when snuggling up for a bedtime story made everything feel safe, cozy, and, oh, so sleepy. As grown-ups, we long for these feelings. What if I said you could have that again? It’s one of the perks of parenting! Snuggling up with our little ones gives us permission to relive that bliss, if only for a little while. Need another excuse?

I have great news for you! Reading fairytales, folktales and fables provides invaluable educational experiences, too!

Since the dawn of time, children have begged their parents for “one more story.” And it’s not just a way to keep from falling asleep, either. While children are engaged in the magic of storytelling, they are also learning how to make sense of their world. Before Bloom’s Taxonomy, before we realized their impact on our child’s cognitive reasoning, countless generations have used stories as a teaching tool. Through fairytales, folktales, and fables, children experience important life lessons, from adversity to triumph. They identify with the protagonist and experience their triumph as their own. Storytelling is also a highly effective way to preserve culture, family history, and ways of life.

So, what’s the difference?

FAIRY TALES are usually short stories. The main characters may be human (often young people) who are influenced by fantastical creatures (fairies, gnomes, giants, etc.). There is often magic involved. The main character is a virtuous person who overcomes hardships by staying true to his/her virtue. The morals of the stories are virtue-based. Some examples include Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty.

FOLKTALES are stories that revolve around heroes, adventure, magic or romance. The protagonist is depicted as a hardworking, everyday person who faces a test (of character). Through problem-solving and making good choices, he or she is capable of amazing, seemingly impossible feats. The moral lessons vary, but one underlying theme is that good triumphs over evil. Although they are rooted in a specific culture, they all share common elements; three characters, three events, and three tests the main character must overcome. Settings are vague (“Once upon a time,” “In a land far away”), which promotes imaginative thinking, and magic is used to explain the unexplainable. Some examples include Ali Baba, Johnny Appleseed, Jack & the Beanstalk.

FABLES are very short stories that teach one specific truth (honesty, patience, perseverance, humility, etc.). Every culture has these, and they are often passed from one generation to another. The main characters are plants or animals given human qualities (although humans may appear, they’re not main characters). The events are unusual, but easy to relate to everyday dilemmas. These are specifically a moral tale. Some examples include Aesop’s fable, “The Tortoise and the Hare.”

Are you still on the fence? Wondering why we should make time for something that feels so frivolous?

Well, that is precisely why! Educators have always known that children learn best when they are having fun. Unfortunately, we do not always have the opportunity to create these moments in the classroom.

Therefore, it is critical that we parents DO try this at home. Storytime provides a safe space where they learn critical thinking and problem-solving skills they can later apply in their own lives.

Fairytales, folktales, and fables entice children to deduce for themselves the benefits of making good choices and being virtuous. Honestly, there has never been a more enjoyable way to impart your parental wisdom than this, and without one single lecture or “I told you so!” So, give in and snuggle up with a good story—it’s good for us all!

Were the Millennials Simply Dealt a Bad Hand?

Simon Sinek, a British/American author and motivational speaker, certainly thinks so. He asserts, “Millennials are growing up with lower self-esteem than previous generations; through no fault of their own, they were simply dealt a bad hand.” A reader shared with me the YouTube video entitled, “Simon Sinek on Millennials in the Workplace,” involving an interview Simon did with insidequest.com on Dec. 27th, 2016, and I was immediately intrigued. I found him to be very thought-provoking, with a style that was both informative and humorous. The essence of his video conveyed the dangers of social media addiction in millennials in particular (those born between 1984 and 2004), and how this comes about.

Science tells us how the human body produces the chemical Dopamine whenever we receive a text and e-mail on our cell phones, or receive a Tweet or a Like on our Facebook page, resulting in an immediate feel-good effect (Psychologytoday. com, September 11th, 2012, “Why We’re All Addicted to Texts, Twitter and Google,” Susan Weinschenk Ph.D.). In the video, Simon notes how Dopamine is the same chemical the body releases when exposed to alcohol, gambling, and smoking. Therefore, one can easily see how the social media addiction can be so prevalent.

As parents, we all know the important role an adolescent’s peers play in his or her development. Now if you can imagine presenting this Dopamine-inducing device, along with the abundance of social media, to a young child or budding teenager who’s dealing with the stresses of school, grades, parents’ expectations, normal responsibilities, peer pressure, relationships, extracurricular activities and, for some, even a job, it’s not surprising it can become more than a little overwhelming for them.

I found especially poignant Simon’s remarks about teens turning to social media in these times of stress, dealing with what millennials describe as “superficial friends who can leave you at the click of a button.” He suggests this nonpersonal connection “influences their ability to form truly meaningful relationships as they get older.” Simon indicates further that subsequently, “Millennials don’t possess the coping mechanisms to deal appropriately with stress.”

Unfortunately, a 2016 study out of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine shows that people who spend more time on social media have higher levels of depression. I think this reiterates Simon’s point that it’s not the device that is the problem; it’s the “imbalance” of too much use of, or reliance on, it that is the real issue.

Of course, parents have a role to play as well. Lots of experts have different views on ineffective parenting strategies.

Some of the shared characteristics, however, will sound familiar. Such as telling our children they’re special and can have or be anything they want in life; along with giving children everything they ask for without them earning the possessions and rewards first, making it all-too easy to obtain. Ultimately, the result is that they go on in their careers and life expecting far too much, too soon, and often without the effort and hard work required to make it happen.

I admit, as a parent of millennials myself, some of this information can be a hard pill to swallow. However, all is not lost; there are still things we can do and ways we can influence them positively. For instance, Andy Puddicombe, the founder of Headspace.com, a meditation site, offered these excellent tips on NBC’s Today Show (January 25th, 2017). He says cleaning up your home screen on your cell phone and moving social media apps over to a side screen will help prevent the temptation to go into them as often.

He also says turning off your “notifications” eliminates those persistent audio signals that prompt you to check your phone every time there’s a message. Also, Commonsense Media (from commonsensemedia.org) advocates device-free dinners with the family, allowing dialogue and interactions to take place more naturally and uninterrupted.

Likewise, we can continue spending the quality time we do have with our children (sans cell phones), sharing meals, family time and traditions, our values, and communicating with each other on a personal level. At least in this way, we can help them build those personal relationships that are so critical. We provide their foundation and their safe haven in life, while simultaneously watching and letting them grow into their own selves. They’ll get there; after all, we all do eventually.

It’s a GRAND Life -

A Grandmother by Any Other Name...

Your

child has told you, in a matter of months you will be a grandmother. You are beyond thrilled with the news and have hundreds of questions running through your mind. Girl or boy?

Both? Nursery colors? Furniture?

What can I do to help? What advice without overstepping? Will I have a role in his or her life? The list keeps going.

One question that you may ponder early on—what will my grandchildren call me?

This is not a frivolous thing to consider. It will be your identity for many, many years to come. When my sister and I announced our blessed events to our parents, our mom immediately started going through possible grandmother names she would like to be called, and many she wouldn’t. It didn’t matter that it would be a long time before she would hear it coming from her granddaughters’ mouths. Maybe it made finally becoming a grandparent a reality instead of just a wish. Whatever the reason, my sister and I heard several options.

As my grandparents lived a long way from us and we did not see them often, I am pleased that we had a loving, bonded relationship with them. I credit my parents with that. As my cousins each lived near our grandparents, they had special names for them. To my sister and me, they were always simply Grandmother and Granddad. Back then, that was more the norm than the exception. Today, it seems there are myriad names I hear grands calling their grandparents.

Even if you choose a name for yourself, it may not make a difference. My mom had narrowed her name choices down, but it did her no good. Our daughter, Erin, had heard my dad calling my mom “Honey” numerous times.

One day, she called her that, too. It was the perfect name and thrilled her to pieces. She was “Honey” to all her granddaughters from that day on. As a matter of fact, we all started calling her that.

In researching what grandmothers are called in different countries, I came across some interesting ones. There are some we have all heard, such as Babushka (bah-boosh-kah) in Russia, Abuela (ah-bway-la) in Peru and Granmere (gran-mare) in France. And some we may not have heard. In Ireland, Maimeo (mam-o); South Korea, Halmoni (halmuh-knee); Romania, Bunica (boo-née-ka); and in India, Awa (ah-wah). There are a few that are different without being too different, such as Italy, Nonna (non-na); Philippines, Lola (low-lah); Hawaii, Tutu (too-too), although I’m not so sure about their other name, Kuku; Kenya, Bibi (bee-bee); Greece, Yaya (yah-yah); and Cambodia, Yeay (yay). How great would it be to have your grandchildren come running to you shouting “yay”?

Although all my grands call me “GiGi”—the first “G” standing for “glorious,” “glamorous,” “gifted,” “generous,” or any other uplifting adjective you want it to be, the second “G” is obviously “grandmother.” Hopefully, as time goes by, the first “G” will remain complimentary and our relationship one of love, trust, friendship and an unbreakable bond. I hope we will learn from, and continue to grow in, our knowledge of each other and have many wonderful memories to look back on, and new adventures to look forward to.

In the end, it’s not the name you choose or the name you’re given, it is all about the faces that light up when they see you, the hugs and their excitement in sharing everything they deem important to them at any given moment.

Sometimes, as in my mom’s case, the name chosen for you means more than any name you could choose for yourself. My husband can attest to this, as our first grandchild dubbed him “Pabo”—a name he cherishes.

Churn, Head of School, is excited to share the launch of its Adolescent Program in 2018. This new initiative will add grades 7–9 to their existing community of children, ages 18 months through 6th grade, providing a Montessori middle-school option to the families of Winston-Salem.

Jon stated, “Adding an Adolescent Program has been a desire of our school for a long time, and we have been actively planning for this for several years. It’s an idea whose time has finally come.

The program offers students active participation in their education and fosters learning with a purpose. It enables them to take on adult-like roles in their school and the local community, offering them experience-based opportunities to explore important questions, such as, Where do I fit in?’

‘What will I contribute to society?’”

Montessori adolescent programs continue to become more prominent across the nation. NC cities such as Charlotte, Greensboro, Durham and Raleigh already have established Montessori adolescent programs, so this expansion through the middleschool years builds on the Montessori momentum throughout our state and nation.

“The most significant challenge facing education today,” shared Jon, “is preparing our children and adolescents for a future not yet conceived.

In our time of exceedingly rapid change, facts and academic skills are no longer sufficient. Our children will also need exceptional problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to adapt to their ever-changing world.

Montessori education and Montessori Adolescent programs, in particular, provide this opportunity.”

While rigorous academic studies and the related experiences will be challenging, what makes this pedagogical approach so unique is the students’ real-life application of concepts and skills.

Adolescence is a time of intense preparation for adult life, so the Montessori project-based curriculum creates a rich academic environment, challenging the students individually and as a working team. For example, the students will be actively involved in developing micro-economies or small businesses.

Examples could be organic gardening, beekeeping, producing/selling homemade jams, publishing,

and artistic products. The students’ interests are respected as adult mentors and teachers help drive the projects forward. This approach creates direct avenues for students to test theories and challenge their knowledge in real-world terms. Students will employ actual applications of science in growing/ raising food products, language skills in developing and communicating marketing plans, math in determining the cost of goods and profits, and civics in contributing to the local economy. Mentorships in the local community will evolve naturally as students seek the guidance and instruction of local experts.

The location for the Adolescent Program is a block away from the main campus and will add almost 7 acres to the current 8-acre facility. The school has engaged with local architectural firm Stitch Design Shop to transform the current site. The home on the new site is being converted to class and community space, and the barn will be utilized in supporting the students’ work and studies. An additional structure for class and community work is also in the plans.

The new location will also provide the students a level of independence, a vital element as they transition into their adolescent years. Enrollment in the new Adolescent Program is anticipated to be up to 40 students.

The Montessori School of Winston-Salem has been part of the Winston-Salem community for more than 40 years with a current student population of over 200. The school has grown with the community since its founding in 1973 with 24 students. Each classroom is comprised of three-year multi-age groupings. Each student learns at a pace right for the child while developing academic, social and executive functioning skills. “We teach individuals within a group, not a group of individuals,”

explained Jon. Each class has its own outdoor area to extend the class environment into the natural world.

Let’s get started! On a recent trip to London, I was reminded of two beloved literary bears….

WINNIE-THE-POOH

PADDINGTON

While strolling through the world’s oldest scientific zoo, I thought about a time, 100 years ago, when young Christopher Robin and his dad were frequently at the very same place. One animal, in particular, a female Canadian bear named Winnie, captured the attention of Christopher Robin. In fact, the little boy loved the friendly black bear so much that he named his teddy bear after her. Indeed, it was a real-life bear at the London Zoo that provided the inspiration for A.A. Milne’s creation of the fictional character Winnie-the-Pooh. This “bear of very little brain” has held a special place in readers’ hearts for a century.

The following day, I boarded a Cotswolds-bound train at London’s Paddington Station to take the 1½-hour journey to the land of castles, cobblestone streets and rolling hills. As I pulled away from the station, I thought about the fictitious, lovable brown bear, with his duffle coat, floppy hat and label around his neck that read, “Please Look after This Bear.” It is noteworthy that the classic tales of Paddington were actually inspired by a teddy bear author Michael Bond purchased for his wife as a Christmas present near the London train station in 1956. Children have loved the humorous adventures of the kindhearted bear who “tries so hard to get things right” for nearly 50 years!

Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear received the coveted Caldecott Medal last year. In this delightful biography, framed as a bedtime story, Author Lindsay Mattick shares the story of her great-grandfather, Lieutenant Harry Colebourn, and the black bear cub he rescued at a train station en route to join his WWI regiment in Europe. Colebourn named the cub Winnie after his hometown, Winnipeg, Canada. She was extremely gentle and quickly become a beloved pet of the soldiers and a mascot of the regiment. A Bear Called Paddington is a new edition of the classic text first written by Michael Bond in 1958. Paddington, a stowaway from “Darkest Peru,” and named for the London train station in which Mr. and Mrs. Brown found him, has charmed readers for decades. This 2016 edition contains eight chapters (each chapter is a story that can stand alone) that recount the first few days of Paddington’s stay with the Brown family. Best known for his good intentions and humorous misadventures, the tales of this charming, marmalade-loving bear are a source of enjoyment for readers young and old. It is the perfect read aloud!

now until late fall, you will be hardpressed to find a weekend that doesn’t feature a 5K (or three) here in Forsyth County. If you have a cause that’s special to you, chances are you can find a run celebrating or benefitting it.

Despite being a newcomer to the slate of annual 5K runs, the 3-2-1 Deacon Dash already offers a little something extra. An official time is captured at the 5K finish line, but then runners have the option of going an extra 0.11 mile for a total distance of 3.21 miles. What’s the significance of that number? To raise awareness of Trisomy 21, a genetic condition where a person is born with three copies of the 21st chromosome instead of the typical two copies. Trisomy 21 is better known as Down syndrome, and the run benefits the local Piedmont Down Syndrome Support Network (PDSSN).

The 3-2-1 Deacon Dash takes place on Saturday, March 25th, at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds, to coincide with World Down Syndrome Awareness Day, which is March 21st, or, 3/21, another nod to the three pairs of chromosome 21. Runners can participate in the 5K, and a 1-mile Fun Run also is available.

BY LAURA LAXTON Last year was the first year for the 3-2-1 Deacon Dash, and the turnout exceeded expectations. PDSSN vice president McNeil Cronin looks forward to building on that success.

“We couldn’t have been happier with the first 3-21 Deacon Dash last year, and we are excited about hosting this event again,” Cronin said. “We look forward to a fund day that brings together families of people with Down syndrome, their friends and their supporters for this wonderful cause.”

Because the race is a Twin City Track Club-sanctioned event, the club provides timing services and official results. Awards will be given to the top male and female runners overall and in various age groups.

Participants also can form teams for fundraising and support, and team awards include most money raised, most participants and most team spirit. The 2016 3-2-1 Deacon Dash saw runners in tutus, as well as the Chick-Fil-A cow (who ran the entire distance), and Bolt from the Winston-Salem Dash. The festive atmosphere also features music, a games area for kids, and food trucks with food and beverages for sale.

The money raised goes toward funding programs and services provided by the PDSSN, and those include everything from social outings to educational programs, to community grants and scholarships, to community events that are open to all types of special needs. Although the organization has been around for more than 30 years, there are many people who don’t realize it’s here, or the breadth of what it offers.

“We support people with DS and their families from diagnosis—whether that is before or after the baby is born—throughout their lives,” said Laura Laxton, PDSSN president. “Events like the 3-2-1 Deacon

Dash spread the word we are here, by exposing a wide variety of people to our name and mission, which extends even beyond Down syndrome.”

The Next Chapter Book Clubs and the No Limits II quarterly dances are two extremely popular events sponsored by the PDSSN. Open to adolescents and adults with any kind of intellectual disability, both programs foster social relationships and acceptance in the community.

“Whether you are a serious runner or just want to come out and have fun, we would love to see you at the 2017 3-2-1 Deacon Dash,” Laxton said. “It’s a great cause and a great time.”

Let’s Talk Openly About Our Menstrual Cycles

look back at those important conversations a girl needed to have with her mother in the late 1970s and through the 1980s, and sadly, the promise of, "we will talk about 'that' later" never arrived. It wasn't the women in my family who graciously answered my curious questions; instead, I learned about my body through friends my age. Yes, it was terrifying to know a period would one day arrive and cause pain across days. The time of embarrassing conversation is over. The day of answers and empowerment has arrived. Whether we are helping to educate our daughters or nieces, or asking our own personal questions, learning about our ever-changing bodies never ends. It is vital that we make a pledge to openly communicate and ask, or offer answers, to those "big" to little questions.

is important for "all" women to pay attention to their cycles, and especially, track each cycle. In asking a doctor questions, the information you present will assist in helping to fix what may be a complicated issue. Katherine Daniels writes, "If only I could talk to my 20-year-old self. I spent several decades experiencing painful and often absent periods when it wouldn't arrive for four to six-month stretches. My doctor prescribed birth control to help me regulate and ease the pain. At the age of 34, a fertility doctor told me that I did not ovulate and would likely never conceive without assistance. I then understood why ovulation sticks never worked for me. I was grateful to learn the truth about my body. I regret waiting so long to find answers. I know many women who were like me and had irregular periods; yet, my ‘normal’ wasn't okay."

An Honest Relationship

Facts:

I was confronted with the question, "how did my brother get in your belly?" when my daughter was three. In having a curious, matter-of-fact child, it quickly became important to consider the type of relationship I wanted; therefore, with every question, she received age appropriate but honest answers. As much as I will appreciate her trust in asking me personal questions, establishing a "we can talk about anything" relationship will help us in the many decades to come, especially when more serious topics arise in the near future.

• A regular 28-day, moderately pain-free period is a good sign that the reproductive system is working properly and hormones are well balanced.

Nikki Bowers, mother of two teenage daughters, writes, "In our house, we started talking about the first period in the fourth grade because many girls were getting their period at that time. I let my girls lead with their questions, and I provided the facts, and the reasons, as well as diagrams.

Many kids will Google their answers; yet, I wanted to be their Google. I set the rule that I would always talk about anything with them; so, I asked questions and listened to their answers.

While their friends tried to teach them things that were not correct, they also had MANY misconceptions. We talk in small bits; so, they can chunk and chew on the information whatever the topic may be! The journey with daughters is always a wonderful ride. Enjoy it!"

• Frequently missed periods can be an indication of poor health conditions such as a poor diet or underweight, chronic stress or too much exercise.

Anovulation is defined as the failure of the ovary to release eggs." For 30% of fertility patients, this is the cause of infertility for women between the ages of 15 and 40.

• While many women choose not to discuss their periods with a doctor, the lack of information may be connected to any number of serious conditions such as osteoporosis, heart disease, infertility or other hormonal complications.

It is good to define what is your normal and be able to express to a doctor information such as the length of each period, light or heavy, and whether they are painful or pain free.

While a menstrual cycle is never timely and often changes in degrees of pain each month, as girls and women, we can find empowerment in learning more about our bodies through research and openly asking "big" questions.

Games of our Childhood

“It is a happy talent to know how to play.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Everything old is new again. Sort of. A number of games and toys we remember from either our childhood or from our children’s are making a comeback in popularity. In this age of electronics, it’s nice to see some old friends becoming popular again. And, a big plus is, most don’t have complicated instructions or require ports or outlets to run them. They’re games or toys that let imagination take hold or that require attention and thought to make them work.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were first introduced in the 1980s. With their new movie release, they’re back and doing quite well at the box office. Granted, they look like they’ve been working out—they’re more muscular than their earlier version.

Transformers have been popular since the 1980s. The movie adaptations have certainly kept them popular.

Going to the new transformer movie was something I always enjoyed with my grandson. There were usually as many adults as kids in the theater.

My Little Pony has also made a comeback. Today’s version has a lot more accessories to select.

Easy Bake Oven—remember those little cakes made with heat from a light bulb? A friend shared that her daughter got one for Christmas. The updated version looks more like a toaster oven. But, don’t you just love those little bitty cakes?

American Girl Dolls made their debut in 1986 and are still popular. The new versions reflect the current interest of girls.

Play-Doh has been around since 1956 and made the Toy Hall of Fame in 1998. Although this was my least favorite of all, my daughter loved her Play-Doh barbershop, while I searched the carpet for little bits of Doh. Rubik’s Cube was created in 1974 and became the world’s best-selling toy with 350 million sold. Actually, I never considered the Cube as a toy, but more of a mathematical exercise in frustration.

Jenga made building a challenge. How tall could you make a tower and keep it standing?

Operation—now that was a fun game. Created in 1964, getting the parts out without hitting the sides required a steady hand and concentration. Hated that buzzing sound, didn’t you?

Legos gave kids a chance to build from kits and then, over time, have enough pieces to use their imaginations to make other creations. Just don’t step on them in the dark and don’t let your pets eat the pieces. I recently saw a headboard made entirely out of Legos. What a neat idea, you spent so much for the kits, why not make something useful and functional?

Numerous other games have roots that go back decades, but remain popular today. For example, Monopoly has many versions and is currently updating their player pieces; I hope the top hat stays (that was my favorite).

Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, and Twister—all are still played today.

I think one of my daughter’s favorite things to do was playing dress-up. She and her friends would spend hours dressing up in my old gowns, complete with jewelry that I played with from my Grandmother’s jewelry box. Now, those pieces of jewelry are treasures she keeps in her own jewelry box.

Playing, imagining, creating, and dreaming are times to treasure from our memory banks. Seeing our children and grandchildren doing the same things keeps us young at heart. Who says we can’t still play dress-up or have a rousing game of Monopoly? Right?

Daylight Saving Time

it or hate it, it’s time to set the clock ahead again on Sunday, March 12th (at 2:00 am, if you want to be exact). Personally, I don’t like the spring forward time change, and after some research, I discover I’m not alone.

Things just feel a bit off-kilter for a while. It could be because by nature I’m not a morning person (no big surprise to anyone who knows me). If it weren’t for coffee, I’m not sure I would be a functional person in the morning (another wellknown fact).

Daylight Saving Time Trivia

What’s the point of Daylight Saving Time (DST)? The intended purpose for DST was to save energy and make better use of daylight hours.

• DST has an impact on health and disturbs the sleep patterns, causing more restlessness at night for some people.

History of DST Benjamin Franklin wrote an essay in The Journal of Paris in 1784 titled, “An Economical Project to Diminish the Cost of Light,” citing that Parisians could save candle usage by getting up earlier. His emphasis was not on adjusting the time, but simply changing sleep patterns.

DST was first used in Thunder Bay, Canada back in 1908. It was used in several other Canadian cities in the 1900s.

Germany was the first country to adopt DST on April 30th, 1916. At that time, DST was implemented to limit the use of artificial lighting and cut back on fuel usage during World War I. The United Kingdom, France, and other European countries followed suit for the same reason. At the end of the war, however, many countries reverted to standard time. DST practice was re-introduced in Europe during World War II again as a wartime initiative.

In the United States, President Woodrow Wilson signed DST into law in 1918 to support war efforts during World War I. In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated year-round DST known as War Time. War Time was in place from February 9th, 1942, to September 30th, 1945, in the United States and Canada. During that period, time zones were referred to as Eastern War Time, etc.

From 1945 to 1966 there was no consistency regarding Daylight Saving Time in the US. Because of this lack of uniformity, transportation schedules and broadcast schedules were quite challenging. Therefore, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act of 1966, setting the last Sunday in April as the beginning and the last Sunday of October as the end date for DST. States could, at their discretion, exempt themselves from following this act.

Due to the 1973 oil embargo, DST was extended to ten months in 1974 and eight months in 1975. The extensions were attributed to a savings of 10,000 barrels of oil per day.

• Statistics indicate an impact on traffic accidents.

• Farmers were not supportive of DST. Many Amish farmers do not use DST. • Two states, Arizona and Hawaii, do not observe DST. • Puerto Rico, American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam do not observe DST. • Countries near the equator do not use DST, as daylight hours don’t vary with the seasons.

• DST is used in 70 countries by over one billion people; however, the beginning date and end date vary from country to country.

• In the US, the second Sunday in March (March 12th) is the beginning of DST; the first Sunday in November (November 5th) is the end date.

So, on March 12th, be sure to change all your clocks ahead one hour. Don’t forget to change the one in your car; from personal experience I’ve had too many “Oh, no!” moments, thinking I was an hour late because I forgot to change that one. And, I’ll try not to whine about losing an hour of sleep. For those of a similar mind, let’s just double up on the coffee for a few days or weeks—whatever it takes.

The First Tee of the Triad

The

First Tee began in 1997, when Joe Barrow, the son of the professional boxer Joe Lewis, had a vision to help economically challenged kids learn the game of golf. His vision evolved into developing nine core values—honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy, and judgment. The First Tee organization has grown to include 170 chapters across the nited States, and five international chapters. The First Tee of the Triad is one of the top five chapters in the country.

In addition to the nine core values, nine healthy habits were added ten years ago with the help of Annika Sorenstam, retired championship golfer, and great partner with The First Tee. THESE NINE HABIT CATEGORIES INCLUDE: Physical – energy, play, safety Emotional – vision, mind, family Social – friends, school, community The First Tee of the Triad incorporated in 2007 and started programming in 2008 at three locations—Tanglewood Park, Winston Lake, and Gillespie Golf course. They are now in 20 locations, stretching from Salisbury to Burlington. Spring classes begin in March and run for eight weeks; fall classes run from August to October. They host multiple summer camps, and provide a half-dozen tournaments for the kids to play in.

They have a par-three series at Tanglewood Park to allow the kids to use what they have learned in a playing setting. There are seven or eight national opportunities that the kids are encouraged to play in as they develop their golf game.

The First Tee is available to kids from age 7 to 18. They can begin at any age, and they progress through a fivelevel program as they gain knowledge, maturity, and experience in the program.

THESE LEVELS ARE AS FOLLOWS: PLAYer (minimum age 7) Introduces the game of golf with special emphasis on The First Tee Code of Conduct, appreciating the rules and etiquette of the game, and The First Tee Nine Core Values.

PAR (recommended minimum age 9) Focuses on interpersonal communication and selfmanagement skills.

BIRDIE (recommended minimum age 11) Emphasizes goal-setting.

EAGLE (recommended minimum age 13) Emphasizes resilience skills, conflict resolution, and planning for the future.

ACE (required minimum age 14 or entering 9th grade) The highest program level of The First Tee—focusing on setting goals for golf, career, and education, and giving back to the community.

The ACE program is where the kids graduate and is similar to the Eagle Scout program. The participants are involved in various activities, including community service. Every child that completes their ACE projects and activities is guaranteed a $1,000 check.

The First Tee of the Triad is one of the leaders around the country in graduating kids. They had nine ACE graduates honored at the awards dinner in November 2016. The Triad chapter is very proud to have a high percentage of the graduating participants around the country. Their focus is character development and teaching life skills to help prepare these children for succeeding in life.

The First Tee of the Triad registration is open for their spring session, and classes will begin at the end of March.

For anyone interested in registering their child, visit TheFirstTeeTriad.org and select the location where they would like their child to participate that is convenient for them. A new participant would sign up for the PLAYer class at their chosen location, and at the first class, they will be provided with golf clubs and golf balls. Training takes place at a great facility, with instruction from trained, adult volunteer coaches. Some of these coaches also attend national training sessions, including local training courses at Winston Lake and Gillespie Golf. With a five-to-one ratio of kids to coaches, participants get individualized attention. No one is turned away, anyone can participate, and everyone is welcome. The cost is $75 per season, and the tournaments and clinics are $5 to $10. “$75 with all of the golf instruction, all of the equipment provided, at a great facility—there is no better bargain in any sport or any organization. All they have to do is show up, and bring a great attitude,” said Mike Barber, CEO of The First Tee of the Triad. Full scholarship opportunities are also available to participants signing up, as The First Tee would like to provide this opportunity to everyone interested in joining their program.

The First Tee of the Triad, including all of their locations, had approximately 1400 kids in their classes in 2016. They operate about 55 classes throughout their locations in the Triad per season. Each season the classes are once a week for eight weeks, from 4:30 pm to 6 pm.

A TIME FOR EVERYTHING

“For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” ~ Ecclesiastes 3:1 “Come on in, kids. It’s time for lunch.”

“Are you ready? We’ll be late for church if we don’t hurry.”

“Bedtime? Noooo. We’re having so much fun!”

Have you ever noticed that parents and grownups seem to live by the clock? You’re in the middle of a game, but Mom says it’s time for a nap. You’re working on a puzzle, but Dad says it’s time to put the puzzle away and help him clean the garage. ou just figured out how to do that math problem, and the teacher says it’s time for spelling.

Time keeps ticking by. The sun rises and sets. The days are getting longer and warmer. Winter has moved out, and spring is settling in. Before you know it, you’ll be saying, “Whew! It sure is hot out there!” And then the leaves will turn brown and fall to the ground, and you’ll start hoping for snow again! When God made the world, it’s like He set a clock that keeps on ticking, keeps marking out days and weeks, seasons and years.

You’re growing up and changing. You might not notice it every day, but suddenly your toes don’t have any more wiggle room in your shoes. The jacket you wore last spring doesn’t fit any more. Maybe you make a mark on the wall to see how much taller you are each year on your birthday. If you have younger brothers or sisters, maybe you’re starting to think, “They’re such babies!”

You’re growing and changing on the inside, too. Maybe you can read books to yourself now.

Are you able to make your own lunch? Can you tie your shoes or ride a bike with no training wheels? Maybe you’re old enough to help take care of a pet. What’s the best thing you’ve learned to do all by yourself in the last year?

The Bible says we should grow in our love for God, too. It’s one step at a time. First, you sing the little songs; then you learn stories about Jesus in Sunday School; then you read the Bible all by yourself. You learn to talk to God and listen to Him. Seasons come and go. Special times come to an end. People move away. But God never changes or moves away. He is with you summer, fall, winter, and spring. He is with you when you play, work, study, or sleep. You gotta love a God like that!

HAPPINESS is Over-rated!

friend who has been struggling with some tough issues recently declared, “There is no such thing as a happy life!” She’d hit a place of frustration and desperation and felt that the possibility of ever finding true happiness was slipping further out of her reach.

Here’s the thing. She’s right! There is no such thing as a “happy life.” The truth is that while we do have moments of happiness in our lives, those moments are temporary and fleeting. We live in a fallen world, where bad stuff happens all the time. A happy life is a fantasy. And, if a happy life is what you or I are after, we will almost always be disappointed.

Now, a life of purpose is an entirely different thing, and it is entirely attainable. To live a life of purpose is to recognize that you have a unique set of gifts, passions, and experiences, and then to actively seek ways to use those things to bless and serve others. A life of purpose is sometimes happy and sometimes heartbreaking.

It’s exciting and exhausting. It’s adventurous and all-consuming. When you are living with purpose, you feel both right at home and completely out of your comfort zone at the same time. And, it’s awesome.

Do yourself a favor. Don’t ask God for happiness.

Ask him for purpose. Ask him to show you what you were made to do and where the world needs you the most. Then ask him for the courage to surrender whatever might be holding you back from the work you’ve been called to do. I’m pretty sure that once you have grabbed hold of your purpose and have begun living it out, you’ll discover that happiness is over-rated, anyway.

better or worse, we are all fallen human beings. We are likely to mess things up from time to time and let others down in the process. This includes your pastor. Talking critically among other church members never helps. Talking directly with your pastor may help if it’s done in humility and love. BUT, talking about it with God will change both you and your pastor more than you can imagine.”

My Grace-Full Life: 3D Prayers

BY DENISE HEIDEL Do you ever think prayer feels awkward? I did. I stumbled over words, tripped out phrasing that felt forced. While most Christian leaders encourage you to simply “talk” to God, have a conversation the way you would with a friend, that’s easier said than done.

As I worked to develop my own personal relationship with Jesus, prayer time was, without question, the hardest thing for me to do. I WANTED to pray. Desperately wanted to have that kind of communication system with my Savior and Heavenly Father! However, I felt like my words weren’t good enough. Moreover, I feared my prayers were nothing more than a checklist of wishes and wants…that even those would become scripted…. I wanted my prayers to be prayed TO God, not AT Him. And there’s a huge difference!

I have finally learned to pray, and it’s a skill I will continue to learn and perfect for the rest of my life.

I simply had to make my prayers 3D. We all know what three-dimensional (or 3D) is. Something that has length, breadth, and depth. We have the ability to give our prayers length, breadth, and depth.

Here’s how: 1. LENGTH: Pray without ceasing.

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” ~1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Prayers that never stop” feels a bit impossible at times, but it’s really not that hard. When Paul wrote this verse, what he was essentially saying is “Don’t put God on the shelf after you finish your daily worship.”

He was encouraging us to let God be a part of our daily lives, even the things we consider to be too mundane for God to care about…. Remember, Luke 12:7 tells us that God knows the number of hairs on your head, so of course, it’s okay to pray to Him before a big meeting!

God wants to be so much more to us if we’ll let Him. He wants to be our best friend, our confidant, our source for joy and comfort. When we stop limiting prayers to a morning or evening ritual, that emotional and spiritual closeness that God wants us to have with Him will happen!

An easy way to learn prayer without ceasing is as simple as changing your passwords. My phone, iPad, computer, even software programs have all been changed to relevant prayer prompts. Every time I log into a device or

program, I have a personal reminder to offer up a prayer to God. I may use that prayer prompt to thank Him for a great day or to ask God to help me through a difficult situation. Whatever it is, I use these small nuggets of time to pray without ceasing. I have found that the more I involve God with random moments in my day, the more often I think to pray without even needing a reminder.

I also love the prayer app, Echo. It’s free on iTunes. I created a prayer list and have prayer reminders set for various times of the day. Best of all, at the end of the day, I can open the app and click “Pray Now.” My prayer list is never in order—forcing me to go through each prayer in a new way. I can never fall into a script, because I don’t know in what order my prayers are going to come up on the screen. You can even mark prayers as answered! What a great way to go back and reflect on the good God does in your life!

2. BREADTH: What is breadth? I thought of it as width, but it also means “comprehensive quality.”

Comprehensive is defined as “complete; including all or nearly all elements or aspects of something.”

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him. ~1 John 5:14-15 When we pray, we can’t only bring our wish lists to God; He’s not a genie, there to do our bidding. We have to make sure our prayers are comprehensive.

I once read that prayer should be inclusive of five elements: 1) Praise, 2) Confession, 3) Thanks, 4) Prayers for Others, and 5) Prayers for ourselves.

I’ve found that not every prayer is inclusive of all five, but if the balance is there—I think we’re on the right path.

PRAYERS OF PRAISE can be done as we read the Bible! A Psalm is a great place to start doing this.

David is credited with writing 73 of the 150 Psalms found in the Bible and his words have inspired millions of believers to praise God, even during challenging times.

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION should be a part of praying without ceasing. For example, as part of my decision to re-commit to Christ, I was conflicted about my language. My language has gone through a major overhaul in the last several months. However, I’m still human. In the moments where I’ve slipped, I have stopped and confessed then and there. The moment we know we’ve done something that goes against God’s will for our lives, we need to confess immediately. Don’t wait until designated prayer time.

With a humble heart of contrition, tell God you’re sorry and ask for forgiveness.

PRAYERS OF THANKS are another type of prayer that can be done as we read the Bible or as we go about our day! Look at the world around you! Changes in seasons as a reflection of God’s consistency, the originality of God’s creations, a home and a backyard to enjoy, the sunshine that helps the trees to grow!

The possibilities for showing God our gratitude are endless, and when we begin praying without ceasing, those opportunities present themselves even more frequently!

PRAYERS FOR OTHERS should include our family and friends, but should also be broad enough to include our government leaders, ministry leaders, military, and others we don’t know. This has been a challenge to me personally, and it’s something that I’m working to grow.... Our world is far bigger than our individual social circles!

PRAYERS FOR OURSELVES should start first with a desire for God’s will in our lives. Ask God to help you listen to His will for you and His purpose. Ask Him to guide and direct you; to close opportunities that aren’t good for you and open up ones that are.

For myself, I like to ask God specifically for opportunities to make Him proud of me; for opportunities to bring Him joy.

Seek the Lord and His strength; Seek His face evermore! ~1 Chronicles 16:11 Prayers aren’t a one-sided form of communication. We are talking to God our Father, Jesus our Savior, and the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf. Imagine having a friend who comes to you and talks, but never lets you get a word into the conversation. When we don’t let God have an opportunity to ‘talk back,’ our prayers have lost that third dimension.

We listen when we make Bible reading a part of our day. It’s God’s written word to us, and through it, we can know Him better.

We can understand who He is, and what His plans are. And if we get to know God through His word, we’ll begin to hear the whispers on our heart.

When prayer feels one-sided, it’s time to stop talking and let God in on the conversation.

Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.’ ~ Jeremiah 33:3

When we pray, we need to ensure that the requests we make of God line up with His law. Obviously, asking God for something that doesn’t line up with His teachings isn’t going to happen!

However, if we go to God with confidence, God hears us. Every.

Single. Time.

So...3D prayers are entirely possible and are the foundation of your relationship with Christ. To sum up:

Every now and then, life sends me a reminder that God is

God, and I am just, well…me; despite my repeated attempts to order, organize, and orchestrate my little world, I acknowledge, the fullness of life is something far beyond my comprehension.

Perhaps a bit egocentric, I vainly overestimate my own authority over everyday, ordinary life. But then again, who doesn’t like to rule their roost? We all like a bit of control.

Turns out, life sends me reminders that my Dad’s right: I’m not in control and it’s not about me. These reminders come without pattern, reason or expectation. Completely unforeseen, life’s context unfolds before me in such a profound way I cannot help but be reminded how expansive and beautifully complex life is and how small I am in comparison. I’ve stood on mountain tops, at water’s edges, at graveside services and before a congregation of witnesses as two people make a covenant of holy matrimony with God; every time, I’m reminded of God’s greatness and my smallness.

I received another one of those reminders when I held Oren Mack Britton on his first day of life at Forsyth Hospital in January.

The tiny newborn (who’s actually not tiny at all for a newborn!) squirmed in my arms. A real live, sleeping, crying, eating and, repeating, life!

I was privileged to hold him and celebrate with proud Mom and Dad. For most of us, it’s not every day we can hold a brand new life or look into brand new eyes.

With the little man in my arms I was overwhelmed with responsibility. He wiggled and I panicked, “Am I holding him wrong?” He stuck his tongue out and I wondered, “What does that mean? What’s he trying to tell me?” His head flopped and I thought, “Geez! Did I break him? Heads aren’t supposed to

flop like that!” I could hardly imagine the weight my friends now carried. I was only holding him; they were responsible for taking this new life home and raising it. Beyond their legal obligations of 18 years, I knew Josh and Erin will never be the same, their lives forever changed by this new life.

As Christians, we are believers who profess the faith of Jesus Christ by the grace of God through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We claim our lives are no longer our own, but God’s, and that we bear Christ’s name. What would the world look like if we took that responsibility as seriously as holding a new child?Surely, it would require more of us than a fish emblem on our car, a cross around our neck or sporting a Young Life T-shirt.

Surely it translates as more than regular worship attendance or bragging rights of participation in an international mission trip. What would Forsyth County look like if we, regardless of denominations and theological differences, held the life of Christ within us as our single most important obligation?

Henri Nouwen, a Dutch Catholic priest, professor and great theologian, wrote: “A Christian leader is a man of hope whose strength in the final analysis is based neither on self-confidence derived from his personality, nor on specific expectations for the future, but on a promise given to him. . . . [This promise] is also the guiding motive for any Christian who keeps pointing to new life, even in the face of corruption and death.”

Our life is not about us and we are not in control. Our life is in God, our hope is in Christ; what more do we need to make disciples of all people and transform the world?

May you live intentionally to share the light and love of God this day, and may you keep on the sunny side of life!

Caring for Caregivers: Five Ways to Help

Chances

are, if you’re not a caregiver yourself, you know someone who is. Nearly 44 million Americans provide care for loved ones or friends with conditions such as Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, or stroke. The services of these unpaid caregivers—mostly women (61%) and typically spouses or adult children—have an estimated annual worth of $470 billion.

As you may know, there’s an upside and a downside to caregiving.

THE UPSIDE Caring for an ill or disabled loved one lets caregivers experience the satisfaction of giving back to a relative who may have raised them or played a special role in their life. Many say that serving as a caregiver has strengthened their emotional bond with that person. Caregiving also helps caregivers feel good about themselves.

Jaclyn, who lives in Winston-Salem and is the primary caregiver for her husband, emphasizes the upside of caregiving. She told her caregiver support group, “I think caregiving really is the most important thing we’ll ever do.”

THE DOWNSIDE

2. TIME OFF

Caregiving can take a serious toll on caregivers’ physical, mental, and emotional health. Many caregivers are socially isolated and lack a team of friends and family members who can step in and give them a break.

Loneliness, anxiety, anger, frustration, and a sense of helplessness are commonly felt by caregivers.

About 22% say they are exhausted when they fall into bed at night, and 40–70% have symptoms of depression. Many constantly worry about finances.

Offer to be a “sitter,” so the caregiver can run errands, attend a support group or Bible study, nap, go to the doctor, exercise, or just enjoy some free time. Bring a friend along if you’re not comfortable “sitting” by yourself.

Because they focus so much on the person in their care, caregivers often neglect their own health. Many don’t get adequate sleep, cook healthy meals, or exercise. In addition, the relentless stresses of caregiving increase adrenaline and cortisol, hormones known to suppress the immune system, making caregivers vulnerable to illness. Stressed-out caregivers are more likely to have a chronic health problem, such as diabetes or arthritis, but less likely to visit a doctor or fill a prescription for themselves.

FIVE WAYS TO HELP If you know a caregiver, you can be part of their support team. Here are five things every caregiver needs: 1. PRACTICAL HELP Ask the caregiver what they need most, or offer whatever your time and resources permit. Ideas: mow their lawn, do laundry, pick up a prescription, make home repairs, change the oil in their car, wash windows.

Older spouse caregivers may resist help if they believe it is their marital duty to do everything themselves.

It may be easier for them to accept help if offers are very specific. For example, “I am going to the grocery store this afternoon. What can I pick up for you?”

3. A LISTENING EAR Be the antidote to the loneliness of caregiving! Call or visit the caregiver to find out how they are doing and respond with empathy. Many people cope better with their feelings and fears when they are shared with a compassionate listener.

4. ENCOURAGEMENT If you think a caregiver is doing a good job, let them know. A phone call, greeting card, text, or e-mail praising their efforts can brighten their day, as they realize that you see value in their caregiving.

5. FUN When someone else offers to “sit” with the person in their care, do something fun with the caregiver.

IDEAS: • Gather friends and take the caregiver out for coffee and conversation.

• Treat him or her to lunch at a restaurant.

• Take him or her to a concert, community event, or movie.

If you are financially able, hire a professional caregiver to provide respite care for a few hours each week, and encourage the caregiver to use this time in whatever way is most enjoyable.

Avoid giving a bottle at bedtime/naps. When kids drink milk or juice before a nap or bedtime, the sugary liquids settle on the teeth and feed the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

Brush your baby’s gums. It massages a baby’s gums and cleans the first teeth.

Get rid of the pacifier. The longer a pacifier is used the more likely it can affect the shape of the mouth or how straight the teeth are.

Start brushing and flossing at an early age. When your child begins having teeth that touch each other, introduce flossing. Brush twice a day using fluoride toothpaste.

Smile Talk

Make brushing and flossing required. Kids will want to skip flossing or brushing. Let them know they don’t have a choice. You’ll have to help your child with brushing until they’re around eight years old. Flossing is a skill that can take longer to develop.

Choose foods and drinks that are low in sugar. Common sugar sources are the foods and drinks that kids crave. But sugar hides in many other foods such as yogurts, breakfast cereals and fruit drinks.

Seeking Normalcy within the Pain of Grief

parents, we expect our children to be with us forever.

The reality is, some moms and dads must face their worst nightmare and say goodbye. In 2015, in just one hospital in Winston-Salem, 127 children became angels. The statistic is staggering, especially when you begin multiplying that number by the number of hospitals in every state. The moment when the rhythm of music stops for a family could almost be described as a snap of a finger. While parents are trying to piece their shattered lives together, family and friends respond in shock by not knowing what to say and distancing themselves to ease their own pain or discomfort. The one thing that can help keep “normalcy” in a grieving parent’s life is to offer unconditional love, support, and understanding.

REMAINING CLOSE Imagine your oldest and dearest friend, the one whose company you have spent years enjoying while your children played together, faced with the sudden heart-wrenching loss of her youngest child. No matter what the ties and promises of friendship are, one common impulse is to avoid the “situation,” simply because we fear not knowing how to help. We think, “I’ll wait until it’s is a better time for her.” This is the time a friend needs your strength and support most of all. Even if she cannot return phone calls or leave the house, you can be aware of her silence and continue to be mindful of the situation.

BE HONEST IN YOUR WORDS? While the statement, “I am sorry for your loss,” is often found in sympathy cards, it may be received as insincere. Please know, parents should never be confronted with the startling question, “How did your child die?” Parents are living with the knowledge that their child will never grow one day older, and thousands of memories have been replaced with a deafening silence. While you may feel compelled to offer guidance or some form of comfort, what parents truly need is support and friendship. If you must say something, then, speak from the heart.

The truth may comfort both of you. For instance, “I have no idea what to say, but I think of you often, and I am here.” Or, “I wish I could take away the pain, but I pray for you, in hopes it will give you strength.”

UNEXPLAINABLE EMOTIONS Grief comes with intense and complex emotions, often never experienced before, such as depression and waves of uncontrollable emotion, panic attacks and anxiety, insomnia, prescription drugs and sometimes addictions or suicidal tendencies—and constant exhaustion. Difficult days can be predicted, and last for any length of time. It is reassuring to have a friend who understands and can help during intense moments of grief. It is okay for friends to recommend counseling, and even assist in calling Hospice. Not everyone is ready for a group; however, another grieving parent will understand and offer reassurance. If you know a family in a similar situation who is willing, the mutual introduction would be greatly beneficial.

Please, do not ask these fragile parents to rush their feelings and move on. Be patient as they take steps backward, and the occasional half-step forward.

REMEMBERING IS EMPOWERING While all parents love to talk about their children, the mere ability to contribute to a conversation will help a grieving parent feel “normal.” If more individuals embraced a mother’s or father’s need to speak their child’s name or tell stories openly, fewer families would feel the need to isolate themselves or avoid social groupings.

SENDING ENCOURAGEMENT Families are usually overwhelmed with attentive family and friends during the funeral; yet, commonly left alone to handle the pieces themselves. On a random Tuesday, and especially during a holiday, send an e-mail, handwrite a letter, call, or schedule a lunch. Despite your busy schedule, the simple act of friendship will be greatly appreciated.

SURVIVING TRAGEDY…ONE DAY AT A TIME The journey through the calendar months imposes great obstacles, fragile moments and setbacks, and large spans of darkness; yet, most grieving parents will be touched by the smallest act of kindness. While tragedy and death are common in our world, the journey of grief is personal and must be taken one day at a time in hopes of surviving.

STRIVING FOR SIMPLICITY

It

amazes me how the simple things in life are those that tend to impress and entertain kids the most and leave them with lasting memories.

Today, it seems we (parents) are constantly trying to create memories for our kids. We organize lavish birthday parties, plan the most amazing sleepover to date, gift them with toys or electronics that steal their attention for hours, sign them up for a different extracurricular activity for every day of the week, and clutter our weekends with more events we can possibly attend. It’s like we’re taking all the creativity out of childhood.

My childhood memories are simple. I remember games I played that involved endless made-up “rules” that we’d constantly change to the point of mass confusion. Some of our games required horseflies, some required dogs as participants, and others required just a sprinkler or a ball.

I remember the countless hours I spent playing with neighbors in the woods behind our house climbing trees. Or the summers at my grandparents’ beach house—jumping waves or organizing elaborate horseshoe crab races with my cousins.

Other than a bicycle (and maybe a boogie board), I rarely played with anything else other than friends, cousins, and my own imagination. I seldom had “play dates” arranged for me— and it seemed most of my weekends were spent at home. If no one was around for me to pal around with, then I went outside and sought things to do.

Sadly, I worry my kids are not creating the same kind of simple memories. I am just as guilty of filling their hours with scheduled play dates and after-school activities, planning special trips, carting them to a million weekend events (God forbid, they have three hours of nothing to do), and organizing birthday parties that have to top the year prior.

As a way to escape this vicious cycle, I recently took my kids to

visit friends in “the country” where they had the opportunity to roam for an entire day, parent-and-schedule-free, on an 11acre wooded lot. At first, I thought the plan sounded fabulous, and then I quickly panicked when they disappeared into the deep woods.

“Don’t worry. They’ll come back when they’re hungry,” my friend jokingly tried to reassure me. Well, they did come back.

And then they’d disappear for another hour or two, and come back for another short break. They did this again and again and again. Thankfully my friend’s children knew the woods like the back of their hands, so I relaxed a bit over time.

Our kids played like this for an entire day—unsupervised— out on their own, discovering new things, building imaginary forts, climbing trees, going on pretend hikes and adventures, finding frogs and other creatures, in and out of the drizzle of rain, without complaint, with just their imagination as their companion, stopping only when they got hungry (just as my friend had reassured me).

There was no structure. No toys. No electronics. No planned event for the day. They made up games. They told each other stories out in the woods. They acted out imaginary scenarios.

It was pure bliss for them. They still talk about their adventures, and they’re counting the days when they can go back.

I later realized later it’s the simple things in life that my kids crave. And it’s what I want them to remember most from their childhood.

As I drove home from my friend’s “country estate,” I made a promise to myself that I’d strive for more simplicity in our lives.

That promise made me feel good, yet it lasted about one whole day back in the “city” of Winston-Salem.

And now I need to go pick my kids up from their play dates and drive them to their next activities….

The

Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem/SciWorks, which merged on July 1st, 2016, has a new name: Kaleideum.

While still in two separate locations, The Children’s Museum will be called Kaleideum Downtown, and SciWorks will be called Kaleideum North. Eventually, the two museums will be united under the name Kaleideum in one location downtown, on the corner of Third Street and Town Run Lane, at the site of the former Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department.

“Many of us worked very hard over several months to find the right name that would best help people imagine this new organization as we move into the future and into a single location in downtown WinstonSalem,” said Paul Kortenaar, Executive Director–Community. “We found our inspiration in the idea of a kaleidoscope—a simple scientific instrument and toy that also creates beautiful art when you look inside.

The kaleidoscope represented the perfect blend of art, creativity, and science.”

The word Kaleideum is a blend of kaleidoscope + museum. The etymology is from the Greek kalos, meaning “beautiful”; eidos, meaning “shape”; and mouseion, meaning “a seat or shrine of the Muses.”

“We loved the image of a kaleidoscope because the instrument itself is a free-choice learning experience that subtly encourages the individual to explore and learn more about our world,” said Elizabeth Dampier, Executive Director–Museum. “Each time a child or adult engages with, or manipulates, the kaleidoscope, the outcome changes, revealing an image that is new and different. As we plan for a new museum, we want to offer more of these multi-faceted, open-ended experiences that prompt children to test theories, seek answers to questions, think critically, and explore at their own pace. We want to fulfill our mission to inspire wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning through interactive play and discovery outside the boundaries of a formal classroom.”

Over the next few months, Kaleideum will be rolling out the new brand and transitioning to the new name as the Executive Directors and board members plan for the future in one location. “A wonderful new museum isn’t built in a day,” Dampier said. “But we are going to be working as fast as we can to share the vision for the future Kaleideum with visitors at both existing museums and the entire community.”

The Museum worked with the Wildfire agency on the new name and logo with input from members of the board of directors of Kaleideum.

“Kaleideum is a great example of a public-private partnership working at its best to create a new museum that will be educational, engaging, and will fulfill the functions of both the former The Children’s Museum and SciWorks,” Kortenaar added. “In terms of timing, we’re continuing work on fundraising and are narrowing the search to select an architectural firm.

We’re looking forward to working with the community to design, develop and construct the Kaleideum experience.”

About Kaleideum: Kaleideum was formed by the merger of The Children’s Museum of WinstonSalem and SciWorks on July 1st, 2016. Kaleideum Downtown (formerly The Children’s Museum) was founded by the Junior League of WinstonSalem and opened its doors on November 20th, 2004. Kaleideum North (formerly SciWorks) was founded by the Junior League of Winston-Salem and opened its doors as the Nature Science Center in 1964. The two museums began talks of a possible collaboration in early 2015, with a new mission of “Inspiring wonder, curiosity, and lifelong learning in our children and community through interactive play and discovery.” The merged entity combines all features of both museums—fusing arts, literacy, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) orientations into an integrated approach to learning. National POISON Prevention Awareness Week

Poisoning is the number-one cause of injury-related death in the United States. If you have a little one, teen or elderly loved one at home, the third week in March is the week to educate yourself on this subject! This upcoming March 19th–25th marks National Poison Prevention week. The week, hosted by the National Poisoning Prevention Council, spreads the word on poison prevention tips.

National Poison Prevention week is not a new occurrence. On September 26th, 1961, the 87th United States Congress passed a joint resolution (Public Law 87-319) requesting that the President of the United States proclaim the third week of March as National Poison Prevention Week. Later, on February 7th, 1962, President John F. Kennedy responded to this request and announced the third week of March as National Poison Prevention Week. Since then, the annual event has helped thousands become more aware of the dangers that come with common household items.

Considering that 90% of all poisonings occur at home, what can you first do to poison-proof your residence?

• First, never mix household or chemical products together. Doing so can often create a dangerous gas.

• Secondly, never share prescription medicines. If you are taking more than one drug at a time, check with your health care provider, pharmacist, or call the toll-free Poison Help line (1-800-222-1222). This phone number will connect you to your local poison center, to find out more about possible drug interactions.

• Finally, keep all chemicals, household cleaners, medicines, and potentially poisonous substances in locked cabinets or out of the reach of children.

Even if you have had your home “poison-proofed,” there are still certain demographic groups who are at a higher risk than others: young children, teens and the elderly are at the highest risk.

What can you do to target and help these groups? Read on for quick tips and tricks.

YOUNG CHILDREN: Caregivers should be mindful of a number of safety tips to keep children safe from poisons. According to countless tests, children who are less than six years old are the most likely to be poisoned. A child’s age, weight, and medical history will also affect the treatment of a poisoning.

It is VITAL to keep the following poisonous products away from children: • Painkillers, such as acetaminophen and similar medications • Cosmetics, such as perfume or nail polish, and personal care products such as deodorant and soap • Cleaning products, such as laundry detergent and floor cleaners When taking care of children, heed the following tips: • All medicines and household cleaning products should be stored in locked cabinets or drawers, out of the reach of children.

• Keep children where you can see them at all times; often poisonings occur when children are left unsupervised.

• Do not leave poisons on a counter or in an unlocked cabinet.

• Never carry something that can be poisonous, such as a medicine, in a purse/ bag where children can easily find it.

• Safety latches on drawers or cabinets, and child-resistant caps on bottles, are helpful in keeping poisons out of the hands of children.

TEENS: Sadly, prescription drug abuse leads to countless poisonings among teens every year. Abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other dangerous substances are also common causes of poisonings.

Parents and adults should closely monitor the use of any dangerous substances.

Remember that there are trusted adults at poison centers that can give free and confidential information about the use and abuse of prescription drugs and other potential poisons.

ELDERLY ADULTS: Older adults often use more medications as they begin to age. It is vital to read all labels and warnings. Older adults should always have the toll-free Poison Help line (1-800-222-1222) available to call in case of an emergency, which connects you to your local poison center. Specifically, the following tips can help ensure that older adults are not at risk.

• With prescription drugs, make sure they have the correct medicines, and the medicine is clearly labeled.

• Make sure your loved one follows the label’s instructions, including dosage.

• Review all medicines (including food supplements such as vitamins, minerals, or herbs) with their doctor or pharmacist at least once a year.

• If taken at night, make sure medicine is not taken in the dark.

• Never mix and use other family member’s prescription drugs.

SHEPHERD’S PIE INGREDIENTS:

salt and pepper to taste

Meat mixture:

1 Tbsp. fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

1 Tbsp. olive oil

DIRECTIONS:

1 ¼ lb. lean ground beef

1. Boil potatoes for about 15 minutes, until tender.

1 large onion, chopped

2. While potatoes are boiling, heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until no longer pink, about 5 minutes, breaking it up as it cooks.

1 clove minced garlic 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1.9 oz. onion soup mix (such as Knorr) 1 cup beef broth 2 cups frozen peas and carrots (green beans and corn optional) salt and pepper to taste Mashed Potato Topping: 6 large potatoes peeled and cubed 4 Tbsp. butter, softened /3 cup milk

¼ cup Parmesan cheese

3. Add the onion and garlic to the beef mixture and cook 3 more minutes until the onion becomes translucent. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, beef broth and onion soup mix. Stir in frozen vegetables, cooking for a few minutes, and set aside.

4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. 5. Drain the potatoes and place them in a large bowl with the butter. Using a potato masher, mash until smooth. Mash in milk, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.

6. Spread the mashed potatoes over the meat mixture in the skillet, smoothing the top with a spoon. Sprinkle with parsley.

7. Place the skillet on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 40 minutes or until golden brown.

8. Serve warm.

LOADED POTATO SOUP INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

4 slices of bacon

1. Cook the bacon by heating a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add bacon and cook until crispy, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer to paper towel-lined plate and set aside.

2 green onions 3 Russet potatoes ¼ cup all-purpose flour 5 Tbsp. butter 1 cup cheddar cheese 3 ½ cups milk ½ cup sour cream salt and pepper to taste

2. Melt butter in a large stockpot or Dutch oven over medium heat.

Whisk in flour until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Gradually whisk in milk and cook until slightly thickened, about 1-2 minutes, whisking constantly. Stir in potatoes and green onions.

3. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Stir in cheese, sour cream and salt and pepper to taste. If the soup is too thick, add milk as needed.

4. Serve warm, garnished with green onion, cheese and bacon (optional)

CRANBERRY-ORANGE SCONES INGREDIENTS: 2 cups all-purpose flour /3 cup sugar

1 tsp. baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ½ tsp. salt 8 Tbsp. unsalted butter, frozen ½ cup dried cranberries ½ cup sour cream 1 large egg 1 Tbsp. orange zest DIRECTIONS: 1. Adjust the oven rack to the lower-middle position and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

2. In a medium bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Using the large holes of a box grater, grate the frozen butter into the flour mixture. Work the butter into the flour with your fingers. Mixture should resemble coarse meal. Stir in cranberries and orange zest.

3. In a small bowl, whisk egg and sour cream together until smooth.

4. Using a fork, stir sour cream mixture into the flour mixture until large clumps of dough form. Press the dough against the bowl into a ball. (The dough may seem dry and sticky at first, but keep pressing, and it will come together.)

5. Place on a lightly floured surface and pat into a 7- to 8-inch circle about ¾” thick. Sprinkle with remaining teaspoon of sugar. Cut the circle into 8 triangle wedges and place 1” apart on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

6. Bake until golden, about 15 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes and serve warm or room temperature.

I love spring, but often comes the not-so-loved spring cleaning. Tidying, purging, organizing isn’t as

fun as sitting on the beach, but I do not mind it. The feeling of having a fresh start or a new project gets me every time the temperatures begin to feel warm again. As spring is upon us, what better time to bring the warmth of the outdoors into your home?

When you think about it, our homes work very hard for us—entertaining, dinners, holidays, and the day to day—so keeping it in good working order helps us live those occasions fully. When we take the time to strategically organize, clean and tidy up, we create more time to be fully engaged in the moments and interactions we experience. This may seem counterintuitive, but we’ve all had those moments in our home that make us feel like, “We can’t have anyone over until….” I never want any of those minute reasons to keep us from living fully and enjoying all of the seasons of life. If your home isn’t serving you to live productively and positively, then it will make you feel so much better to take some time to tackle those “until” barriers.

Not to mention, spring opens the opportunity to rid your home of the “stuff” you can live without. You and your family will feel the benefits of rooms and spaces that can breathe. I’m a firm believer in the philosophy of, “If you don’t love it, toss it.” Trash anything that is broken, has seen better days, or simply serves no purpose at all. Purge! It will feel good, I promise!

I’ve created a list that should help you overcome the hurdles of spring cleaning, and I hope will motivate you as well. By having a checklist, you break down that overwhelming feeling of too much to do. Break this list down, take it one item at a time and conquer those cobwebs!

WHOLE HOUSE: ❏ Clean baseboards ❏ Launder throw pillow covers and throw blankets

think it’s in our nature at some point in life to collect stuff, either things we enjoy or value at that point in life, or frankly, things we just like for no apparent reason to anyone but ourselves.

Based on a completely informal poll of family and friends, there are a lot of different collectors out there. Maybe some of these collections will spark your interest.

MUSIC I have several uncles who between them have enough record albums to stock a fair-sized store. Both love country music, so most of their collections fall into that genre. One loves the Carter family and knows more about their background than anyone I know. I recently learned that a friend from my college days collects music memorabilia—not surprising, since she worked in the music industry for years.

ANIMALS Now, here’s a broad category of things, like figurines, household items, or fun stuff. I knew a co-worker who collected elephant figurines; her living room cabinet was filled with them (jade ones, pewter, porcelain, etc.). Another work colleague shared that she had a cat collection, from figurines and artwork to kitchenware (as she said, “hundreds of them”). A friend from high school responded to my Facebook question that she collected sharks’ teeth. My daughter loved dolphins when she was young and had quite a varied collection of pillows, prints, and little figurines; I think she gave them all away when she got older. She also had a substantial collection of stuffed animals that she donated to a local hospital years ago.

KITCHENWARE A family friend has a “copper” collection, and in her words, “a kitchen full.” The older pieces are her favorites. One friend had a collection of plates, specifically dessert plates from her travels.

They weren’t the typical souvenir type, most were hand-painted.

At one time, her kitchen walls were covered in them.

SEASONAL Dot, a family friend I’ve known since I was in kindergarten, shared that she collects nativity sets. Brenda, a long-time friend from work, has a snowman collection that she displays during the winter. It’s her happy collection. That’s probably true for most collectors; whatever the collection is, it makes them happy.

REGIONAL My son-in-law collects German beer steins. It’s been fun to prowl through antique stores looking for something to add to his collection, and I’ve been lucky to find some marked from places in Germany that I know he’s visited.

CAREER-RELATED Melinda, a professional photographer, is a collector of old cameras. I have an amateur shutterbug cousin who also collects old cameras.

SPORTS I suppose we all have a friend or family member with some type of sports collection (baseball cards, hats, etc.). Perhaps the collection is functional and something you enjoy, like Andy, who shared that she collects kayaks.

MOVIES, BOOKS, MEMORABILIA My daughter has loved Gone with the Wind ever since I handed her my copy to read years ago (I never got it back, either—it’s now part of her collection). Over the years, she’s added dolls, Hallmark Christmas ornaments, the book in various translations, and so much more. I have several cross-stitch projects to finish for her one of these days (Scarlett in her barbecue dress and the iconic curtain dress).

My collection, if I had to name just one, would be books. I’ve never met a book I didn’t want to read.

Why we collect varies with who we are as individuals. Perhaps the collection reminds us of our childhood, where our roots are, bygone days, interests and hobbies, or, is just a reflection of something that we enjoy. It probably makes gift buying easier for your friends and family if they know about your collection.

Collections come in all sizes. Some may be small, some may consume a room or even a home, depending on the enthusiasm of the collector.

High school can be a demanding time. Not only are you required to get good grades, take standardized tests, get into college, and maybe even have a job, you also bear the pressure of deciding what to do with the rest of your life.

It is common to hear the reassurance that you do not need to know where you are going until sophomore year of college. However, there are many benefits to having at least a rough idea before this.

Not only will having an idea of what your future will hold relieve an inordinate amount of stress, but having a career plan will also help you in your college search. For example, if you begin studying at a school known for its excellent writing program, but discover halfway through that being an artist is your dream, you may have to undergo a complicated transfer.

High school is a good time to research your career choices. You can take up an internship to more fully understand what the job entails, or simply take a day or two to shadow a superior. Shadowing, or watching someone who has already secured the career you desire, can be as important, if not more so, than an internship. Getting a feel for the everyday, mundane operations of the actual job through the eyes of a worker can be extremely informative.

If the career path you have chosen requires more than a four-year education, you can begin researching graduate or law schools and studying for the entrance exams. This process will allow you to get the experience that is impressive on a transcript or resume, which in turn gives you a better shot at being accepted into the school of your choice.

Finally, pursuing a career in advance can save a great deal of money. After making a mistake, Doobins sometimes gives himself a hard time.

I know that tendency well. When I was younger, I regularly did that.

Then, one day, it dawned on me that I was making two mistakes.

The first mistake was the original misstep. The second was giving myself grief about it. That served no purpose other than making me feel bad.

I couldn’t do anything about the first mistake. But I did have control of the second one. What made far more sense was to let the first mistake go and to do my best not to repeat it in the future.

I still give myself a hard time, but not nearly as often as I once did.

On more than one occasion, I have made a point to offer that advice to Doobins.

I feel comfortable saying something when it’s clear that what I say might be helpful. Other times, it’s hard to know whether I should say something or keep my mouth shut. As Sparkle Girl and Doobins get older, Garnet and I find ourselves talking about that more often.

Do we let them learn the lesson on their own? Or do we offer what we hope is helpful advice?

Thinking about all of that had gotten me looking back at how my parents handled things when I was growing up. As a Presbyterian minister, my father offered all sorts of what could be interpreted as advice from the pulpit. Day to day, though, he seldom told me he thought I should do this or that.

More often, my parents would talk me through a situation and then leave the decision to me. Before the third grade, they gave me the choice of going to one elementary school or another. Each had its positive points. I kept wishing they would just tell me, but they never did.

It was only later that I understood how valuable teaching me to make my own decisions was.

The lessons that mean the most to me are often ones I picked up as they were just going about everyday life. One of the most valuable lessons comes from the Saturday I went over to visit my father at church and found him cleaning out the toilets in one of the bathrooms because the janitor was sick. He didn’t have an attitude about it. He was just doing something that needed doing.

That made an impression, and, over the years, I have seen how important it is to take that approach to life, and, when possible, to steer clear of people who see some things as beneath them.

I connect another lesson with the time I was 10 or so and went with him to the bank. When it was our turn, he let someone else in front of us. We were waiting, I learned, for a dour-looking teller he had been trying, so far unsuccessfully, to get to smile. When she was available, he stepped up and did what he could to make her feel a bit lighter for a moment.

Over the years, I saw him do such things time and again. When he talked with people, he gave them his attention. It was a powerful gift.

I hope that one day Sparkle Girl and Doobins will look back and feel as if Garnet and I taught them a lesson or two while we were just going about everyday life. I have no idea what those might be, though.

Bringing Immeasurable Joy to All She M ts

In

the early 1950s, when Rose Jackson was just eight years old, she took piano lessons for only $1 per lesson. Who would have thought those lessons would lead her down a road that would bring joy to so many of the most deserving individuals in our community?

Rose has been playing music for more than 60 years for churches, singing groups, parties, events, fundraisers, ceremonies, nursing/retirement homes and with various bands; but two years ago, she felt a calling to volunteer for the hospital. “I started as a ‘volunteer,’ but the hospital has graciously reimbursed and accommodated me,” said Jackson. She played in the cafeteria, in the Sticht Center, and the Janeway Tower, but she took some time off due to family needs and personal stress.

She was later asked by the Cancer Center to play for a special event where she says she discovered her “place and calling.” “It was therapeutic and stress-free,” explained Jackson. She now finds herself playing in the waiting room of the Cancer Center. “The patients, caretakers, families, staff and volunteers give me so much more than I take to them. I make them smile, and they make me happy. They make me feel appreciated, instead of tolerated. Each time is like a family reunion with new members, coming together to reminisce, and comfort and encourage each other—a delightful, distraction for the hurting. It is a time of unity and hope.”

The music Rose plays offers a bright mood for the patients and families she plays for. “I don’t play sad songs; I play mostly with a ‘Rag-time’ tempo with even hymns for a happy beat,” said Jackson. “And, sometimes, as a disguise to not offend the different religious faiths.”

As a child, Rose played the piano in church and is most comfortable with Gospel or other spiritual music—anything but heavy metal!

Through the years, she has had many remarkable experiences inspired by her music. “I have played ‘Country Gardens’ for a lady from Europe who couldn’t speak English; played for a two-year-old boy who would only say, ‘Old McDonald’; and my heartstrings were ‘played’ while accompanying a nurse, caretaker and a patient singing Christmas songs,” added Jackson.

“Nothing communicates like music, and it’s a language everyone understands. Music speaks love and caring!”

Rose hopes to continue playing music for another 60 years—which will surely please the countless individuals who have been touched by her music. In addition to music, Rose creates artwork, such as caricatures and illustrations that she often incorporates into her music. She is a firm believer in sharing your talents with others. “If you can offer a kind word to a weary soul, you have a talent,” suggested Jackson.

“Things have a way of working out for good when sharing your ‘gifts.’”
