The Importance of Appreciating What You Have Staycation Spring Break
by SHERIDAN C. WATKINS
March means spring is on the horizon! Some families may be booking trips for the warmer months ahead or already heading out the door. However, many times, it is beneficial to find ways to enjoy your own home and environment. It saves money and can serve as a teaching moment for growing children to appreciate the blessings they’re already living in. Chances are you prayed for the residence you occupy now and, if you’ve been there for a year or more, it’s easy for the excitement to dwindle and become accustomed to the new normal. Staycations have become popular for many reasons, but today, I want to help you revisit the blessing it is to have a home and fun ways you can have a memorable vacation right where you are!
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE
I’m always blown away by how changing decor and accent colors can freshen up my space. It gets me excited to walk into that room again. If you’re someone who enjoys a home activity, give your home a mini makeover. Since spring is coming, brighten up your rooms with vibrant colors from pillows, wall hangings and tabletop displays. You can rearrange or even switch
out furniture between rooms. If you have an outdoor area, you can add a hammock, get new outside pillows or string up some lights for cozy nights with your favorite people. If you’re looking to spend money to transform a space, you could explore parts of your home you may not use often. Some cool ideas could be transforming the basement into a game room, turning the guest room into a spa retreat for a period of time or creating a reading nook in an unused corner. This simple shift in how you engage with your space can make a huge difference in how much you appreciate it.
ADVENTURE TIME
Just because you’re staying home doesn’t mean you can’t experience new things! Plan themed days to add excitement to your staycation. Have a “Tropical Day” by decorating with beach towels and floaties, sipping mocktails and walking around the house in flipflops. Or, maybe have a “Movie Marathon Day” by making popcorn and snacks, setting up a blanket fort for the kids and enjoying everyone’s pick of a film.
For those who like to cook, try an “International Day” by cooking a foreign
cuisine, watching a related documentary and maybe even learning a few words of another language. These activities are not only fun but educational as well.
TEACHING GRATITUDE
One of the greatest benefits of a staycation is the chance to teach kids (and remind ourselves) to appreciate what we have. Encourage children to reflect on what makes their home special. You could have a family night where everyone takes turns sharing things they love about their home. Or, take time to organize and donate items no longer in use, and use it as a teaching moment for your kids to understand the importance of giving back and helping others while creating a cleaner environment for themselves.
Your staycation doesn’t have to be elaborate to be impactful. The key is to embrace the opportunity to slow down, connect with loved ones and rediscover the beauty of your own space. So, in addition to or in replacement of a getaway trip this spring, use a staycation to unpack the joy and gratitude that already surrounds you. Sometimes, the best destination is right where you are.

St. Patrick
and His Special Day
by DEBBIE LINVILLE
There’s more to this celebration than just an excuse to wear green from head-to-toe and drink a pint of Guinness.
St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated by the Irish since the 9th century (although Ireland did not make it a public holiday until 1904). This widely celebrated day was originally set aside as a religious day, not a day to party! March 17th was a day of solemnity – a modest celebration to honor the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The Catholic Church officially recognized St. Patrick’s Day as a feast day in 1631, and as a holy day, people attended church services and the pubs were closed. This is a very different scene from today’s merriments in Ireland, the United States and 200 other countries around the globe – UK, Japan, Australia, Argentina, South Africa, Malaysia, Canada and Singapore, to name a few. When Irish immigrants settled in the New World, they brought their traditions with them; especially those that emphasized Irish pride. It was Ricardo Artur, the Spanish Colony’s vicar, who organized the first recorded St. Patrick’s Day parade in what is now known as St. Augustine, Florida on March 17, 1601. That’s right…the first St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in the United States, not Ireland. It wasn’t until 1903 that Waterford, Ireland had its first parade, the heartbeat of the holiday festivities; and it was another 30 years before the first official, state-sponsored St. Patrick’s Day parade was held in Dublin. Over time, St. Paddy’s Day became less about honoring the religious “saint” and more of a secular celebration of Irish culture through special foods, parades, dances, music and, of course, lots of green – the color commonly associated with St. Patrick.
4 FACTS ABOUT ST. PATRICK THAT WILL “SHAMROCK” YOUR WORLD:
1. SAINT PATRICK WAS NOT IRISH.
Saint Patrick, the son of Christian parents, was born in Roman Britain in the late fourth century. According to his own writings, he was kidnapped at age 16 by Irish raiders and sold as a slave to an unnamed master in Northern Ireland. After working six years in captivity as a shepherd, he dreamed God told him to return home to his family. He escaped, returned to England where he studied and was eventually ordained as a priest and sent to Ireland as a Christian missionary.
2.
HIS BIRTH NAME WAS NOT PATRICK.
While exact dates are uncertain, most historians believe he was born around the year 385 AD. Some call him Maewyn Succat, while others refer to him as Magonus or Cothirthiacus. In his autobiography, Confessio, he calls himself Patricius. After becoming a priest, he was renamed Patricus and, upon his return to Ireland, he changed it to Patrick.
3. SAINT PATRICK’S COLOR WAS NOT GREEN.
As depicted in ancient artworks and historical records, Saint Patrick’s robes were originally azure blue. In fact, his color was known as “Saint Patrick’s blue.”
The color green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day after it was linked to the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century when the shamrock became a symbol of nationalism and the “wearing of the green” on lapels became a regular practice.
4. HE DID NOT DRIVE SNAKES OUT OF IRELAND.
The legend of St. Patrick standing on a hilltop with his wooden staff in hand banishing all the snakes from the island of Ireland is popular, but scientists say Ireland is one of the few places on the planet where snakes are not found in the wild. In other words, Ireland’s lack of snakes cannot be attributed to St. Patrick.
Although Patrick was not formally canonized by the Catholic Church, he is highly revered in Ireland and considered to be a saint in heaven by many Christian churches. Let’s raise a glass (green beer, of course) in celebration of St. Patrick and his special day with this Irish toast:
“May your troubles be less, and your blessings be more. And nothing but happiness comes through your door.”
BENEFITS OF Therapy
by BETHANY GODWIN
When I think about the last several years, undoubtedly, I think about the significant stress our society has experienced. We are all very aware of the negative impacts stemming from the global pandemic.
However, the increase in awareness of mental health needs and support available were instrumental in breaking barriers. Though our experiences were unique, we were collectively impacted by the pandemic. This shared experience, it seemed, allowed us to all acknowledge the increase in stress and begin talking more freely about the need for mental health support, and even the permission to explore it. We saw many first-time therapy clients emerge. The normalization of telehealth, improved access to those living in rural areas or facing other obstacles to seeking services.
As a therapist, I am aware of the benefits of mental health therapy. I see first-hand the improvements that can happen in someone’s life when he or she has an outside, neutral person to provide emotional support. Before college though, I did not have the awareness or firsthand experience to attest to the benefits. As a child, my understanding of therapy was largely attributed to the stereotypical depictions from the media. Having my own experience with therapy (yes, therapists see therapists, too) has also helped me experience the benefits of therapy from the other side of the couch.
A THERAPIST IS NOT YOUR FRIEND
This may seem like an odd concept if you’ve never been to therapy before. How can it be comfortable to talk so intimately with someone who is a stranger? Just because therapists are not your friends does not mean they aren’t friendly or you don’t have rapport with them. The important difference is a therapist’s primary role which is to provide emotional support to YOU.
The therapeutic relationship is a bit one sided. It is a different dynamic from a friendship – you do not have to feel guilty for focusing only on what you need from them during your session. It is the main focus of the hour! This dynamic would not work well in a friendship relationship, and that’s exactly what makes it work in a therapeutic relationship. Your therapist is a neutral and objective person, whereas a friend has emotional ties to you and likely has an opinion about how you should respond. A therapist can help clear away distractions and help you discover your own voice.
INTENTIONAL TIME FOR REFLECTION
The therapy hour allows for a focused time to reflect. We are all very busy with our lives, we move from task to task, distractions and to-do lists abound. It can be hard to find time to do less and observe more. Many times, I have had a client sit in front of me and say, “Wow, I didn’t realize I felt that way until I said it out loud.” When talking to a therapist, it is necessary to explain experiences and relationships in greater detail because they do not know you outside of their office. Talking to a neutral person forces us to take a step back and reflect on our interpretation of an event, person, life change, etc. It allows us to be more curious about ourselves, improving our understanding of our thoughts and emotions.
ASSISTANCE WITH EXPANDING YOUR PERSPECTIVE
When we are experiencing a stressful situation, it can be very hard for us to take a different perspective than the one we have initially. Our intense emotions can act as blockers to our logical thinking. A therapist outside of your situation, can see the issue from a “bird’s eye view.” The therapist can take different vantage points and consider other factors in your life that might be affecting your current perspective. This can be very helpful in reducing the intensity of your emotions and assisting you with understanding your response to the situation. A therapist can help provide clarity to what can feel like mental chaos.
This is not an exhaustive list by any means as to the benefits of seeing a therapist. However, I hope this is helpful when considering if now is the time to begin your therapy journey. I’d encourage you to explore your options – the benefits outweigh the risks.

Pit Master Tip
There are a million different ways and methods to smoke a brisket. This method always seems to work for me. The key is making sure it does not dry out. I recommend smoking the flat before doing a full brisket. They are very expensive, and if you have never smoked one, it’s always great to practice on a smaller cut first.
Smoked Brisket Flat
Prep Time: 30 minutes | Cook Time: 8-12 hours
Yields: Varies
Ingredients:
1 Brisket Flat (3-5 pounds)
2 T SPG rub
Mustard
Brisket is one of the first things you should smoke going into the summer!
Set your smoker to 250-275 degrees. While the smoker is heating up, trim any excess fat off the brisket. You will want to leave about an inch to an inch and a half of fat on the brisket.
Slather the brisket with mustard as a binder and use your favorite salt, pepper and garlic rub.
Every hour, make sure you spritz with apple cider vinegar. This will keep it moist and make sure it does not dry out.
Smoke it until an internal temperature of around 170 degrees if the bark is set the way you want it. If not, you can smoke until 180. Wrap in foil or butcher paper and put it back on the smoker. You will pull at an internal temperature of 203 degrees.
Let it rest, wrapped in a cooler for at least an hour before you slice it. I smoked this on my Big Green Egg from Casual Furniture World. They have locations in Winston-Salem, Greensboro and Myrtle Beach. They carry every accessory for the Big Green Egg amongst other brands, all the finest names in outdoor patio sets, fire pits and everything you need to make sure your backyard is set up for all of your summer gettogethers.
Make sure to stop by and pick up your next grill at any of their locations!
Gift It Forward
by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
They say that “things” don’t matter; that they don’t have a “soul.” I only have to look at my weekly trash or my donations pile to concede the point. At the same time, the things that make my house a home and a haven – well, that’s a different story.
Gazing out on my .67 slice of suburban rootedness, my heart goes to the story we continue to create in this chapter of our life. Half of the trees, bushes and perennials were gifted from neighbors, happy to share their bounty. Gifted! The birdbath transported down from Connecticut, the pair of matching antique planters snapped up at a Pfafftown estate sale, the “whimsical miss” statue snagged at another estate sale just two doors away, and, oh, the elephant – gifted from my who-could-have-imagined friend and neighbor because she knew it would remind me of my much-missed sister with the abiding penchant for elephants.
Yes, I know. All of this translates as personal meaning attributed to mere “things.” And really, that’s the point. The mere “things” that occupy the spaces of your life and mine remind us that things hold something intangible. They hold what matters and is meaningful to us – generosity extended, a friendship in bloom, a connection unexpected. Perhaps even love
That’s why I shut out the well meaning, practical voices who insist that a thing is just a thing. I know better.
The dark side of things imbued with meaning is that we may come to clutch them too tightly. Confuse them with what they represent and unwittingly fall into thinking that the thing is the message, when really, it is merely the messenger. That’s what makes the ability to let go a grace, especially as we get older. Now, as I gaze upon my meaningful things, I not only look backward to the story behind them; I also look forward to releasing all of it – that pair of planters, that birdbath, that statue – all will be gifted forward to others as suits their nature and their meaning in my life. The mere thought of this brings me joy! Because when you think about it, our relationships are cemented, remembered and made ever more sacred by the giving and gifting of things.
When my brother’s daughter, Katie, graduated from college last year, I gave her cold hard cash. I also gifted her a ring imbued with a deep and poignant family history related to my father’s early passing (we were in middle school) and my brother’s journey to the former Czechoslovakia to meet our father’s people, our unknown relatives. My heart told me that his daughter was the rightful heir to this modest but meaningful piece. As we gathered to celebrate Katie’s achievement, my brother and I told the story from that chapter in our shared history. And, now Katie would be part of that intangible, a story that unfolded more than 50 years ago. All prompted by a wee piece of jewelry.
Instead of holding on, I’m gifting forward. I’m telling the stories behind my gifts because that is where the memory, the connection and the love is stored. It is how a thing becomes a vessel that holds our meaning and makes our lives meaningful. What happens next is not my business or my concern. My heart is peaceful. And yet, who knows? Maybe those stories will live on, perpetuating the meaning and reinforcing the joy of gifting things forward.

Movie Night
Shake Up Movie Night by Making it Themed to Match the Evening's Video Selection
by SUZY FIELDERS
Do you need an indoor activity during this chilly winter?
Are you wanting to change up your regular movie night? A themed movie night is the answer to both these questions! This fun twist is something all members of the family can enjoy.
Remember to have fun planning these. The set up, food or anything else is meant to enhance the fun, so don’t stress trying to make it all perfect!
Be sure to get the rest of the family involved in the planning, too!
FOLLOW INFLUENCERS ON INSTAGRAM
I love following influencers for all the amazing ideas they share for families. Many share some really cool movie night ideas, including themes! Two of my favorite social media influencers that share themed movie night ideas are @kristinnicolemiller_ and @ dadsocial.
START WITH FOOD
Food seems to be the easiest place to start when planning any event – themed movie nights included. Two great places to get ideas are Pinterest and Google Images Search. If you don’t feel up to making themed food, another option is to put the food on plates and bowls that match your theme, similar to birthday party themes.
WARDROBE IS EVERYTHING
Even if matching PJs isn’t your “thing,” you and your family can still have fun dressing up for your themed movie night. After all, dressing up in costumes is one of the best parts of Halloween!
MAKE IT A MOVIE MARATHON OR SERIES
Select movies that have sequels or are part of a series to make it a movie marathon or a part of more themed movie nights.
ADD GAMES
Did you know many family and kids’ movies have themed games to match? Whether you add it on as a before or after movie activity or play it during the movie itself, this is a fun addition to a themed movie night!
GET COMFY
Want to unwind at the end of a hard day with your movie night? Then, grab some pillows or blankets to match your theme.
SIMPLE OR ALL OUT
Remember there is no right or wrong way to do a themed movie night! While I mentioned using influencer reels for ideas, it’s sometimes easy to get into comparison mode with those all out plans. But, if you want to keep it simple, that is fun, too! For example, for a Barbie-themed movie night, simply incorporating hot pink into decorations, food and PJs works great. Or, for a Captain America themed movie night, opt for patriotic items.
No matter your theme or add-ons, it’s certainly going to be a fun time your family will cherish together!

and Other Ideas to Reduce Daily Stress Stop Folding Your Underwear
by LAURA CZERWINSKI
How many times have you been told that it would be a good idea to lower your stress? Typically, those words are coming out of the mouths of your doctors, spouse or a good friend.
Now, after hearing this piece of advice, how many times have you thought to yourself “easier said than done?” I’m guessing it’s been more than a dozen times.
We’ve all heard a plethora of ways to reduce stress. A relaxing bath, a massage, “me time” with a good book and even the newer “Netflix and chill” therapy. These are all great ideas but not always convenient to implement on a regular basis to possibly help you bring your stress levels down a notch or two on a more long-term basis.
Something you might want to consider trying is eliminating small daily annoyances that might be building up and contributing to your stress levels. I’d like to share some out-of-the-box ideas you may not have thought of that might help you along the way.
• Does keeping a clean home stress you out? Keep cleaning supplies in each bathroom so it’s easier to give the mirror a quick wipe down. Reduce kitchen clutter by getting rid of superfluous items. (I’m looking at you, coffee mugs and large, trendy, insulated drink containers!)
• Make your bed every morning. Assigning yourself a chore to do first thing when you are waking up may not sound ideal, but the effort will more than pay off when you are headed to a welcoming, cozy bed after a long day.
• Getting a manicure? Consider using clear polish or keeping the color neutral. This way, minor chips won’t be as noticeable and you won’t feel the urgency to take care of it ASAP.
• If you have kids, encourage them to help with age-appropriate chores. Imagine not having to empty the dishwasher, take out the trash or vacuum on a daily basis. It may take some time for them to develop a new habit, but giving them a way to contribute to taking care of the family home is always a positive!
• When putting away laundry, don’t fold your underwear. I get that some people like to be organized and keep things neat. Wrinkles don’t matter with this piece of clothing. Just throw it in the designated drawer. Done. Bonus: This will also save you a decent amount of time which you can bank towards other to-do items. Do the math; it will surprise you!
• Try to stop automatically assuming that others have negative or bad intentions. It seems lately that most people are hardwired to assume the worst. Don’t take offense when you know deep down that it wasn’t intended. It’s best to keep that weight off your shoulders.
• Politely decline when you are asked to do things that you have no time for or interest in. In the pilot episode of Friends. Joey and Chandler are helping Ross get settled in his new apartment. Joey asks Phoebe if she wants to help and she replies “Oh, I wish I could, but I don’t want to.” Ok, that response is not exactly polite, but you get the picture. Freeing yourself of unnecessary obligations can be, well, freeing!
Did any of the tips inspire you to make a change or encourage you to come up with some easy ideas on your own? We’d love to hear about it in our Facebook group!

NOVANT HEALTH Orthopedics & Sports Medicine
Same-Day Care for Your Entire Family
by MARTIE EMORY
At the heart of the Novant Health philosophy is embracing the ever-changing healthcare landscape, while staying true to their commitment to patient safety, quality, health equity and the overall human experience.
At Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine on Robinhood Road in Winston-Salem, that experience encompasses delivering remarkable care for orthopedic conditions and sports medicine injuries exactly when you need it – immediately! With sameday scheduling available for fractures, sprains and strains for all age groups as well as walk-in hours each weekday during normal clinic hours, patients can receive care on their own schedule. Having you on the road to recovery swiftly is always goal number one!
“What truly sets our clinic apart is the welcoming, family like atmosphere we’ve worked hard to create,” says Clinic Administrator Angela Baugh. “I have the privilege of reading our patient survey comments each week, and one sentiment consistently stands out – our patients feel valued. They know they aren’t just a number to us. While we are deeply committed to ensuring the highest quality of care and safety, it’s the relationships we build with our patients that really make a difference.”
Dr. Phillip R. Mason – who is very involved in supporting the sameday clinic and is also a pediatric orthopedic surgeon – grew up in a small town where his grandfather was a pharmacist and inspired him to study medicine. He’s been with Novant Orthopedics for 10 years and enjoys getting people back to doing what they love – a favorite sport or simply playing with their grandchildren!
“It’s important to seek care as early as possible to diagnose your injury in order to prevent any potential for further damage,” shares Dr. Mason. “Our goal is to bring you back to your normal active life as soon as possible, as delayed treatment can also lead to longer recovery.”
Kevin Frisch, PA-C, works with Dr. Mason at the Robinhood Road clinic and points out the importance of our community having prompt, reliable orthopedic care.
“We’re able to provide patients with early treatments and interventions that help ensure they are set on the right track for a full and speedy recovery,” he says. “We see all ages and treat all kinds of injuries and ailments, from acute fractures and sports injuries to flare-ups of chronic conditions like osteoarthritis and overuse injuries, such as tendinitis and bursitis. Many of our patients are avid runners, golfers and tennis players with sports injuries related to those hobbies.”
Kevin knew from a very young age that he wanted to work in medicine, and while on clinical rotations in PA school, he quickly realized orthopedics was his calling.
“I have 14 years of Orthopedic PA experience, but I continue to learn new things every day. I recently moved to the Winston-Salem area from Long Island, NY with my wife and two young boys, and I feel extremely fortunate to have landed with a group filled with such talented, devoted and supportive orthopedic providers. Our clerical and clinical staff utilize a team-based approach which enables us to provide compassionate and top-notch care for our patients and streamline follow-up care with the specialty providers they may need to heal from their injuries.”
Athletic trainer Trevor Christianson also works closely with the Novant Ortho providers, assisting with patient vitals and histories, ordering X-rays and administering casting, splinting or bracing as prescribed by Dr. Mason and the PAs. He is inspired by the one-on-one interactions he has with patients.
“I typically see patients very early in the treatment/recovery timeline – often during their first visit to the clinic,” he shares.
“I consistently hear testimonies from our patients about how thankful they are to have same-day orthopedic clinic availability – at the level of quality and efficiency that we provide.”
He emphasizes how crucial it is for patients to seek treatment for their injuries as soon as possible, especially in the case of potential fractures.
“The body begins to heal quickly after it has been damaged, and if the bones are in poor alignment or in the wrong position, it could lead to increased healing time and possible future issues,” he adds.
For patients who find they need orthopedic surgery, Novant Health offers both traditional and minimally invasive options, including some robotic-assisted surgeries. Since a patient’s overall health can strongly affect their recovery from injury, Novant Health providers assist with other issues such as smoking, blood sugar or mental health concerns, and continue patient interaction throughout injury recovery with access to physical therapy or other rehabilitation services.
Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has 8 locations across the Triad with 5 locations that offer same day and walk-in care. Visit NovantHealth.org/Orthopedics for more information.
Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. for walk-in appointments. The clinic is located at 200 Robinhood Medical Plaza in Winston-Salem, 336.718.7950. For athletic injuries, the clinic is convenient to Mount Tabor High School, Jefferson Middle School and Robinhood Road Family YMCA and also to Pfafftown, Lewisville and Bethania. Visit novanthealth.org for more information.

FLUFFY COTTAGE CHEESE PANCAKES
PREP. TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOK TIME: 10 MINUTES
TOTAL TIME: 20 MINUTES | SERVINGS: 4
INGREDIENTS
1 ½ cups Cottage Cheese
1 cup All Purpose Flour
4 large Eggs
2-3 tbsp. Granulated Cane Sugar
INSTRUCTIONS
1 tbsp. Baking Powder
¼ tsp. Fine Sea Salt
Olive Oil or Butter for cooking
Maple Syrup for serving
1. In a high-speed blender, combine the cottage cheese, flour, eggs, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Pulse until very smooth. If you find the batter almost too thick to stir, add up to 1/4 cup warm water.
2. Place a griddle pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, generously grease with the butter or olive oil. I prefer using olive oil since it’s doesn’t burn as quick. To be noted, if you like your pancakes to have those crispy edges, the more ‘fat’ you use when cooking the crispier they will be!
3. Use a large ice cream scooper to add ¼ – 1/3 cup batter per pancake onto the greased griddle. Use the back of a spoon to evenly spread out the batter. Reduce stovetop burner to medium heat.
4. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until you see air bubbles and edges are set, then flip. Cook another 2-3 minutes, until golden and fluffy.
5. Enjoy warm with fresh fruits and maple syrup!
pineapple. An incredible array to choose from for your Spring baking!
This month’s recipe is all about making the best cottage cheese pancakes that are crisp along the edges but super fluffy. And while, they don’t necessarily use any season produce in the recipe itself, I’m calling you to be creative with its toppings! Having staple recipes are important, but the way you serve them throughout each season is what makes them special. Maybe try a mango compote or add blood orange zest into the whipped cream. You could also keep it simple with a side of ripe pineapple or fresh strawberries.

Spring Cleaning for Friendships
by TABI FALCONE
Have you ever gotten a text message from a friend and felt your gut flip with a familiar feeling of dread falling over you?
This knee jerk reaction to hearing from somebody who should be considered a friend is not what most people would call a reaction to a healthy friendship. But other than this “gut feeling,” how can we identify toxic friendships or friendships that have simply run their course?
YOU DON’T ENJOY THEIR COMPANY ANYMORE
Just like romantic relationships, sometimes people just “fall out” of friendships. This is a normal part of growing, and while it can feel uncomfortable, it’s often mutual. Priorities change, and the friendships you struck up bar hopping in your early 20s may not hold as fast when you’re raising babies in your 30s. Likewise, childhood friends often go in wildly different directions, which is completely normal. While we can still grieve these lost friendships, we can also celebrate them for what they stood for at the time.
BOUNDARY CROSSING WITHOUT AN APOLOGY
There are certain boundaries that should not get crossed, and when a friend crosses one, it’s hard to come back from that action. It’s especially difficult to salvage a friendship when a friend crosses a boundary and then doesn’t apologize for it. These boundaries are different for everybody, but our friends should know what they are and know where to draw the line.
THEY DON’T CELEBRATE YOU
You can’t expect all of your friends to celebrate you all the time, but if you get a big promotion at work, or get engaged, or announce you are moving to Australia to finally achieve your dream of being a surfing instructor – a true friend will offer sincere congratulations and celebrate these successes with you.
YOU AREN’T A PRIORITY
Yes, we know, we are all busy. This doesn’t mean you can’t make time for your friends on occasion – even if just for a 10 minute catch up phone call or a girl’s night every four months or so. If you are prioritizing your friends and they aren’t prioritizing you, this is a problem.
THEY DRAIN THE LIFE FORCE OUT OF YOU
This may be slightly dramatic, but if you feel drained every time you hang out with a friend it is a sign that this is a toxic friendship. It shouldn’t take all of your energy to spend time with a person, and that is a sign that it’s time for them to go.
Now that you’ve identified a friendship that has run its course, how do you hit that final nail in the coffin? It depends wildly on the friendship, and on you as a person. If you are somebody who is very practical, a straight-shooter, you will most likely want to go with the true honesty approach. And if we’re being completely honest, you probably don’t need this article as you have already pruned your friendships as necessary. This is more for the people who worry about how to express their feelings to other people when those feelings may initially hurt somebody’s feelings. While we would all love to be able to say what we mean without any negative consequences, unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. In general, telling the truth is always the best policy, but sometimes a white lie can be justified in the pursuit of ending a friendship without hurting feelings. Or, if you have extreme avoidance of conflict, you can go the avoidance route, which is to simply reduce the amount of interactions until the friendship peters out on its own. The most important part is to acknowledge when friendships are doing more damage than good, and backing out whichever way you are most comfortable with.

WOODARD & COMPANY ASSET MANAGEMENT GROUP, INC.
Your Trusted Financial Partners
by MARTIE EMORY
Celebrating its 40th anniversary as a trusted source in the asset management arena, Woodard & Company Asset Management Group, Inc. continues to guide clients with integrity and the highest standard of ethics. That includes individuals, families of all sizes and even businesses, and you’ll find a team approach here – all with a goal of bringing you the very best efforts and expertise!
While working closely with clients to establish their investment objectives and determine portfolio options that best fit their individual needs and goals, the Woodard & Company motto –“Always Buy Quality and Diversify” – is actually trademarked and has become a respected mantra.
Buying quality and diversifying means applying an investment discipline incorporating quality investments that are diversified, based on the client’s risk tolerance and overall economic circumstances.
“When we utilize high-quality investments, we know that investment’s expectations for the future, and that helps us build a financial framework,” shares President and longtime Davie County resident John Woodard, who founded the company in 1985. “It’s all about making informed decisions.”
With assets of more than $1 billion in management, the company knows that a client’s trust in them provides valuable peace of mind.
“We are fiduciaries and hold the clients’ interests first –our success always starts with their success,” John adds.
“Rest assured, we don’t take that trust for granted.”
Woodard & Company operates with a singular focus – offering decades of experience in fee-only discretionary investment portfolio management. They do not sell insurance, annuities or mutual funds. John also stresses the importance of their uncompromising personal
service, and the value of their assistance with a family’s overall financial planning. Many of their advisors have more than 20 years of experience in financial services.
That level of service is company-wide, including the newest Woodard & Company team members – Matthew Blades, CFP®, whose primary responsibilities include security analysis and financial planning, and John Woodard III, Investment Advisor, who serves on the investment and marketing committees, while contributing to portfolio strategy. Matt joined the firm in 2021, and John graduated cum laude from Virginia Tech in 2023 before becoming part of the team in 2024.
Joan Woodard, who serves as Chief Financial Officer, oversees the company’s partnerships with a variety of worthy causes and local organizations and encourages the importance of deep involvement within the community. Partnering with several notable groups within Winston-Salem and the surrounding community offers the Woodard team a chance to give back and support those loyal customers who have supported their efforts for the past 40 years.
For a look back, in 1985, Woodard & Company was located in the “cow barn” at the restored farm of RJ Reynolds located on Reynolda Road in Winston-Salem. The company purchased the Lewis Eberhardt House in Old Salem as its operating location in 1993, then, in 1998, realized the need to move to a more centralized business location on South Stratford Road. Having ownership of the location of their offices continued to feel like an increasingly necessary priority, and, in 2006, the group designed and built its present office – based on the style of a Virginia home built in the late 1600s.
Woodard & Company is located near Tanglewood Park across from the Bermuda Run Country Club at 117 Kinderton Boulevard in the Kinderton Business Park, Bermuda Run, NC, 336.998.7000. Their offices are open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., and you can learn more about their services and dedication to clients at WCAMG.com or email woodard@wcamg.com for more information or to request a consultation.

The Personal Experience Your Family Deserves HAYWORTH-MILLER FUNERAL HOMES & CREMATORY
by MARTIE EMORY
Proud of being a vital part of the Winston-Salem community for more than 50 years, HayworthMiller Funeral Homes & Crematory is the family owned, trusted resource you can count on when your own family is experiencing a difficult loss.
This well-respected tradition of excellence began in 1961 when W. Paul Hayworth and Robert F. Miller purchased Manuel Funeral Home, located on West Fifth Street in downtown Winston-Salem, renaming it Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home. Four years later, Hayworth-Miller relocated to Silas Creek Parkway, respectfully serving local families through the years, while also expanding with convenient locations now in Rural Hall, Lewisville, Advance and Kernersville.
Currently in its second and third generation of owners, the Miller family has a fourth generation ready to follow in their footsteps. Honoring your loved one’s life has always been their top priority, and they offer assistance for traditional services, memorial services and cremation services.
“Hayworth-Miller is known for the genuine care, compassion and attention to detail we offer to the families we serve,” says Marketing Director Sandra Snarski. “We take the time to understand each family’s story and incorporate those details into the service. It is our goal to provide helpful options for families and
to assist in making a challenging time as meaningful as possible.”
Continually looking to improve their services even more, all five Hayworth-Miller locations have been pleased to add live-streaming to their menu of options in the past year. Live-streaming is provided free of charge for any family who requests it, whether you’re having a chapel service, church service or graveside service.
“This important service allows loved ones to be part of the ceremony no matter where they are located,” shares Sandra. “Live-streaming videos are also recorded as keepsakes, to be passed down to future generations and viewed together anytime, together as a family.”
As everyone grieves in very different ways, often within very different timeframes, a recorded version of the service also offers a sense of connection and closure –no matter when it’s viewed. When there may be strained family dynamics, it can also offer a more comfortable alternative to gathering with a large group.
While attending a friend or family member’s service in person is always the favored option – where you can be surrounded by love and support – attending in person isn’t always possible due to geographical distance,
health issues or confinement to a nursing facility and other circumstances that prevent attendance.
This state-of-the-art live-streaming capability can be a welcome blessing, especially for large families whose relatives may live all over the country. The quality audio and video capabilities offered by HayworthMiller feature unique chat options as well, and the service recording can be made as personal as the family chooses.
To bring those close to you together at a time it matters most, consider adding the live-streaming option to any type of service you may have planned with them. You can learn more about their full range of funeral and cremation services by visiting them online at Hayworth-Miller.com.
Convenient, caring and always exceeding expectations in service to families in time of loss, Hayworth-Miller also continues to grow by supporting the community through a variety of local groups and outreach programs. Contact the WinstonSalem location for your family’s needs at 3315 Silas Creek Parkway, 336.765.8181.
GET READY FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER!
Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning the ultimate camp experience for your kids! Whether they’re looking to explore the great outdoors, unleash their creativity, build new skills, or stay active, there’s a perfect camp waiting for them.
In this special Summer Camp Section, we’ve rounded up some of the best local camps to help make your planning easy and exciting. No matter their interests— sports, arts, adventure, STEM, or all of the above— there’s something for every child to enjoy.
Let’s make this summer one to remember!
Five Benefits of Summer Camp
Although March may seem early to be thinking of summer camps, the brief months of summer will be here before you know it. Summer means many parents are now faced with the daunting task of keeping their kids responsibly looked after and entertained. While many turn to babysitters and family for parental supervision, summer camps are another great choice, due to the wide variety of options available.
According to the website all4kids.org, here are the top reasons summer camps seem to trump other childcare options:
SOCIALIZING AND FRIENDSHIP BUILDING
One of the benefits of summer camp for youth is that they get to socialize and meet new people. During summer break, children often find it difficult to form or maintain friendships with peers their own age. Not only do children develop important life skills through socializing, such as sharing, setting boundaries and problemsolving, they also are learning how to develop strong, healthy relationships through interacting with their peers. A summer camp program provides a safe environment for them to develop social skills, decision-making skills and maybe even experience the great outdoors. In fact, socialization during childhood may accomplish more for growth and development than reading or eating vegetables! A fun environment like summer camp is a fantastic way to encourage this in your own children, from early childhood into adolescence.
(Continued on page 40)
PERSONAL GROWTH
Most summer camps focus on a theme or incorporate aspects of learning, exploring, character building and personal growth. If you are looking for fun summer activities for your children, there are many different types of camps to consider, such as sports camp, cooking camps, art camps, science camps and many more. You can be certain that your child will not only be entertained, but also educated and challenged, as well. While they are having fun and exploring their own interests, they are also increasing their own capacities for learning, teamwork, problem solving, knowledge and self-awareness. In fact, studies have shown that, of families who send their kids to summer camp, 70 percent of parents report that their child gained self-confidence while at camp. A strong sense of self is so important, and this is only one of the many ways that attending summer camp can positively impact your son or daughter. Learning about themselves and the world outside of the traditional classroom environment can do wonders for their growth and development.
LIMITS SCREEN TIME AND ENCOURAGES EXERCISE
In a world full of technology, sedentary-related conditions are on the rise. In fact, physical inactivity is currently the leading cause of disease in the US, and it all starts in childhood. According to the World Health Organization, sedentary lifestyles increase all causes of mortality, double the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity, and increase the risks of colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, depression and anxiety –which, for the most part, are entirely preventable. While some extra creativity to get your children active and limit screen time at home during the summer is often required, summer camp is a perfect solution. Most of these programs are situated in the great outdoors and offer a number of physical activities for the children to partake in. Not only will they get out of the house and have some fun, but they are sure to get some solid exercise in, as well – from activities such as hiking, archery, horseback riding, swimming, zip-lining and team sports. Allowing your children to explore the outdoors and interact with a diverse group of peers is an excellent way to broaden their perspective and have a variety of experiences for their summer break.
POSITIVE ROLE MODELS
Another benefit of summer camp is that it provides your child with the opportunity to interact with positive adult role models. Typically, camp counselors are younger adults who are choosing to volunteer or working part-time over their own summer break from college. Not only are these counselors energetic, but kids see them as “cool” and often a little more relatable than their own parents. This can be a tremendous asset in the lives of your children. Building these role model relationships can help kids to develop the confidence, self-esteem and skills they need to be successful in school and in life. Overall, the more healthy, positive adult relationships that a child or youth has in their life, the more likely they are to thrive in all areas, long after summer camp has ended.
MAKING MEMORIES
Unfortunately, children today are missing out on some of the simplicity of life before the technological era. While times have certainly changed and there is tremendous value in that, there is nothing quite like preserving those simple, unplugged, childhood memories. Aside from gaining decision-making skills, leadership skills and social skills at a summer program, they also get plenty of physical activity! Yes, your child may miss their phone, tablet or gaming system at first, but once they start exploring, interacting with their peers, engaging in a variety of activities and having new adventures, they are sure to leave summer camp with stories, photographs, friendships, life lessons and memories that will last a lifetime.
AT THE END OF THE DAY
As parents, we want the best opportunities for our children. Having healthy, happy, well-adjusted children translates to successful and content adults. Children need guidance and life skills to achieve their goals. Important skills acquired at summer camp, such as self-reliance, socialization, independence and physical activity, will benefit them long after their summer camp days are over. Your children will return from camp with more self-confidence and a stronger sense of identity. They will have developed valuable skills, made new friends and created memories to last a lifetime. So, if you are on the fence about summer camp for your child or children, it’s time to come down, get the family together and pick a camp!
REGISTRATION
Now Open
for Free Pre-K Programs in Forsyth County
The Pre-K Priority Encourages Families to Learn About Their Local Pre-K Options And Register
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (February 6, 2025) – Forsyth County’s registration window for free Pre-K programs for the 2025-2026 school year is now open. To simplify the registration process, there is one common application for all free Pre-K programs which include NC Pre-K classrooms in private child care centers, Head Start centers, Pre-K classrooms in select Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) elementary schools and the Quality Education Institute charter school. In total, there are approximately 1,400 free Pre -K classroom slots available, which is not enough to meet the demand and waiting lists are expected.
“Although this is not a first come, first served program, and notification of classroom placements does not begin until June 1, we encourage every family interested in these free Pre-K offerings to start the registration process early,” said Saquana Terry, Director of Children & Family Services at Smart Start of Forsyth County. “Starting early ensures your family has the time to fully complete the application and ask any questions that you may have throughout the process.”
Families can download the Pre-K application from Smart Start of Forsyth County, Family Services or the WS/FCS Office of Preschool. Applications are also available at Smart Start’s offices at 7820 North Point Boulevard and the Head Start locations at 3410 Healy Drive and Winston-Salem State University at 1850 Cromartie Street. Smart Start provides assistance with the application process, and families who have questions or need support should contact the office at 336-725-6011 to meet with a Smart Start team member.
As part of the application process, families will identify their first, second and third choice of Pre-K classroom placements from the 23 WS/FCS school sites, 9 private child care centers, 4 Head Start locations and the Quality Education Institute charter school. Once the application and preference
form are fully completed, families will receive an Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) from the WS/FCS Office of Preschool to help identify children with academical developmental needs.
“We work closely with families to determine if they meet the eligibility requirements for the NC Pre-K program, Head Start and Title I program, including income, family size, demonstrated educational needs and other risk factors,” said Terry. “For example, families who don’t meet certain income requirements, may still be eligible for placement in a Pre-K classroom through WS/FCS if there is an educational or developmental need. Our goal is to place every eligible child in the Pre-K location of their family’s choice. It’s not always possible, but our team works very hard throughout the process because we know a high-quality Pre-K experience is so important for these young learners.”
Once a Pre-K placement is made, families will be connected to that school or center. Families offered placement through Head Start will work with a Family Services Head Start Family Advocate.
According to Terry, here are four common questions asked by families considering a free Pre-K program.
IS MY CHILD ELIGIBLE FOR FREE PRE-K IF WE EXCEED THE INCOME REQUIREMENTS?
The NC Pre-K, Head Start and Title I programs do have certain income requirements, however, there are Pre-K classroom spaces through WS/FCS for children with demonstrated educational or development needs. We
(Continued on page 44)
(Continued from page 42)
encourage all families to complete the Pre-K application and the Ages & Stages Questionnaires from WS/FCS to determine your eligibility.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF AND WHERE MY CHILD IS BEING PLACED?
Placement letters will go out to families between June 1 and July 31. Applications opened Feb. 3. A schedule of application submission windows is available on the Pre-K application. Families who submit their applications after July 31 are more likely to be placed on a waiting list.
WHAT IS THE PRE-K SCHEDULE?
The Pre-K program operates on a schedule similar to the public schools, although certain Pre-K locations have different hours of operation. The Pre-K application includes information on each location’s arrival & dismissal times as well as the availability of before/after care.
IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED?
No -- families are responsible for providing transportation for their child.
The Pre-K Priority, a community coalition working to improve the quality, accessibility, and number of Pre-K classrooms in Forsyth County, is helping spread awareness about Pre-K registration and the options available to families. Later this month, The Pre-K Priority will send postcards to Forsyth County families with preschool-age children letting them
know that registration for Pre-K has started. There’s also an interactive tool on The Pre-K Priority website, prekpriority.org/ register, that families can use to learn about local Pre-K options.
Child Care Resource Center (CCRC) is a local agency that helps families find Pre-K programs in Forsyth County (and surrounding counties) through its comprehensive database of more than 1,200 child care programs. According to Executive Director Katura Jackson, families should start connecting with CCRC now to begin identifying Pre-K programs.
“Unfortunately, our Pre-K landscape continues to shrink as more child care centers are reducing the number of available classrooms or closing their doors entirely,” said Jackson. “It’s a very challenging environment for child care operators to run their centers, retain their workforce and keep their rates affordable for families. With fewer classroom spaces, families may struggle to find the center that best fits their needs and budget so you want to give yourself time to navigate the process.”
In addition to supporting Pre-K registration efforts, The Pre-K Priority and its community partners are working on a number of local early childhood education initiatives. A foundational element of The Pre-K Priority’s community impact is a twoyear initiative supporting a cohort of 30 Pre-K classrooms with additional high-quality resources for 60 teachers, more than 400 students and their families. The initiative was launched in the fall of 2023 with more than $4 million in ARPA grant funds from the Forsyth County Commissioners and the City of Winston-Salem. The initiative’s first-year report presented in June 2024 demonstrated strong results in terms of student achievement, family engagement and teacher support and retention. More information about the work of The Pre-K Priority at prekpriority.org.
WAKE FOREST CAMPUS RECREATION
LAUNCHES ELITE PERFORMANCE TRAINING PROGRAM FOR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES
Wake Forest Campus Recreation is excited to announce its Elite Performance Training Program designed specifically for high school athletes in Forsyth County and surrounding areas. Fitness Coordinator Michael Spieldiener emphasizes the program’s goal: “to provide committed athletes with an affordable option that will elevate their skills to the next level this summer.”
Located in the heart of campus, the state-of-the-art facility will serve as the athletes’ training home for eight weeks. This program offers a unique opportunity for varsity athletes to cultivate lifelong habits that will benefit them both on and off the field, while building strength, speed and agility that will push them to their best as they prepare for their high school season.
Starting June 2nd, participating athletes will have access to a facility typically reserved for Wake Forest students during the academic year. “We have
everything from sleds and medicine balls to a turf field and a multitude of squat racks,” Spieldiener notes, highlighting the comprehensive resources available. The program is designed for athletes with a strong commitment to their sport and, for many, aspirations of playing at the Division 1 collegiate level.
The program consists of three weekly sessions (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) for high school athletes aged 14-18. The first half of each 90-minute session takes place on the turf, focusing on linear, lateral and rotational speed and agility training. “This is a crucial building block for every athlete,” Spieldiener emphasizes. “So many athletes think lifting weights alone will suffice, but you need to train like an athlete to be an athlete. These movement patterns are learned, and improving them will make you incrementally better.”
The second half of the session moves indoors for resistance training, emphasizing fundamental lifts such as squats, deadlifts, bench press and pull-ups. “There are no magic tricks,” Spieldiener states. “It all comes down to hard work and getting stronger and faster – that’s what we teach our students day in and day out.”
Spieldiener’s experience as a performance coach in Orlando has shaped his vision for the program. “Before coming to Wake Forest, I saw firsthand how early habits impact collegiate athletes. They would arrive 20-30 minutes early to begin their warm-ups. These patterns and continuous drive develop at a much earlier age than college,” he explains.
The eight-week program incorporates performance tests, speed and agility training, and reaction and coordination drills. Last year’s pilot program yielded impressive results.
Spieldiener shares the story of one baseball player who improved his 40-yard dash time from 6.8 to 6.2 seconds. “We were so pumped for him! It was exciting to see the difference, and the coolest thing was witnessing his confidence increase. It’s like a light bulb going off – they realize this is what it takes to be successful.”
The coaching staff at Wake Forest Campus Recreation boasts diverse backgrounds, including swimming, tennis, gymnastics and weightlifting, with all coaches possessing extensive expertise in strength and conditioning and personal training. This ensures that each high school athlete receives high quality, well rounded instruction. The program aims to prepare athletes for the fall season by enhancing their speed, strength and confidence.
For parents and athletes seeking more information, Wake Forest Campus Recreation will host virtual Q&A sessions on March 3rd, March 17th and March 31st from 6 - 6:45 p.m. For further inquiries, contact spielm@wfu.edu.

NURTURING NEW NORMS:
by TARYN JEREZ
Each month, this series introduces fun and impactful healthy habits to help families with kids and teens prioritize physical, mental and spiritual well being – fostering a lifestyle of shared growth and lifelong wellness. Healthy habits built together are the ones that last a lifetime.
If you put a group of parents who grew up in the 1990s through the early 2000s, they’d be quick to agree that exercise was often framed as a way to lose weight, change their body shape and meet external beauty standards. Parents who had this familiar mindset ingrained at such a young age are now putting a higher importance on building healthy relationships around physical activity. It’s time to flip the script and reframe exercise not as a punishment or a means to an end, but as a joyful and essential form of self care.
By introducing children to exercise as a regular part of self care and overall wellness, we can foster positive associations with movement, build lifelong healthy habits and boost their confidence, starting now.
THE SCIENCE & STATISTICS OF SELF CARE
It’s a proven fact that active kids are more likely to become active adults. While immediate images of playing soccer or running track come to mind when we picture active kids and adolescents, the picture of health as a whole is what’s important to see.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children and adolescents who engage in regular exercise have improved bone health, better cardiovascular fitness, stronger muscles and reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. In addition, the Journal of Pediatrics published a 2020 study where they found that children who exercise regularly are 50% more likely to remain active as adults, reducing their risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes and obesity.
When you nurture the norm that exercise is a fun way to get their little bodies moving and have fun, you’re inadvertently giving them a positive coping mechanism, stress reliever, confidence builder and more.
Self Care
NURTURING THE NORM OF EXERCISING STARTS NOW
Here are three ways to introduce exercise as a joyful, family centered habit that prioritizes self care:
1
LEAN INTO ACTIVITIES THEY LOVE
Start by tapping into your children’s interests! If they love swimming, make it a family tradition to hit the community pool once a week. Does your little guy or girl love watching team sports with Dad? Consider enrolling them in soccer, basketball or Taekwondo classes with friends or cousins.
2
MAKE MOVEMENT PART OF YOUR DAILY ROUTINE
Consistency is key! Incorporate movement into your family’s daily schedule in simple, approachable ways that doesn’t feel forced! If you’re trying to get more steps in any way, make a post-dinner walk part of your family's evening. If you have little adventure lovers, add in a short weekend hike with a few scavenger hunt items they have to find along the way to make it something they look forward to!
3
ADAPT TO SEASONS AND CIRCUMSTANCES
Life gets busy, and as NC families know, weather doesn’t always cooperate! During the cold and wet months or busy workdays, encourage short, fun bursts of exercise that you can do together at home. You can try a short kid-friendly yoga video off YouTube or have a quick dance party to shake off stress. Brain breaks with movement are incredible tools for little wiggle worms with lots of energy and even big kids needing a screen or school work break!
CREATING PRACTICES THAT LAST A LIFETIME
When the children in our life see exercise as an act of self care rather than a means to achieve a specific body type, it genuinely helps them build healthier relationships with their bodies and build lifelong practices. You’ll start to notice the confidence that comes from expressing themselves actively and appreciating what their bodies can do!
Embrace your ability as a parent or caregiver to model this same mindset and rebuild your own relationship with exercise as you exhibit what it can look like to your kids!

by HALLEIGH MILLESON
I became an auntie at 18 years old, and it has become such a joyful part of my life. I remember the day that I met my first nephew, and I will always remember the happiness I felt when holding him for the first time. Fast forward to 2025, and I am now “Auntie Hal” to four. I love getting to be an auntie and to spend time with my two nieces and two nephews. One of my favorite parts of being an auntie is getting to see my nieces and nephews grow up in front of me. It is so exciting to see them experience new things every day and to see them find joy in the everyday. Below, I am going to share a few things that being “Auntie Hal” has taught and reminded me.
FIND JOY IN THE LITTLE THINGS
When I am around my nieces and nephews, I always watch them get excited about the smallest things. Seeing them smile when they see a dog outside or being excited to sit down and read a book together always makes me reflect on how the simple things in life can bring us great joy. Each and every day, we can look around us and smile at the ordinary things we do such as getting to watch a fun movie at night or being able to pet our dog. It is amazing how happy my nieces and nephews are with simple things which makes me realize how I can truly find joy in the everyday.
HOW TO SHOW UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
Becoming an auntie has taught me how to show unconditional love to my nieces and nephews by being there for them and wanting the best for them. Being around my two nieces and two nephews now has taught me a love that I had never experienced before. All of them make my heart happy as they give me hugs and want to spend time with me reading books, playing, watching movies, etc. It fills me with gratitude to be able to spend time with my nieces and nephews and tell them how much Auntie Hal loves them.
LEARNING TO BE MORE EMPATHETIC
I have also learned to be more empathetic and show my nieces and nephews that I am listening to them and care about how they feel. If my niece or nephew is upset,
has taught & reminded me
then I will listen to them and do my best to help them feel better. Giving them a hug and showing them that I am there listening to them helps them to feel better. I believe this is a great reminder for everyday life as sometimes just simply letting someone know that you are there for them by listening to them can really have a positive impact for someone, especially if they are feeling upset.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SELFLESSNESS
Being an auntie means helping to take care of my nieces and nephews when I spend time with them, and this definitely requires putting their needs above my own. I have been humbly reminded of the importance and power of putting others’ needs before my own and willingly helping other people to feel happy and loved. There may be a moment where I want to do something, but then my niece or nephew needs something, so I drop what I am doing to make sure they have what they need. It always makes me feel good to know that I have helped them.
All of these are important lessons that I have been taught and also learned by being Auntie Hal. I hope that this article will help other aunties to see what a positive difference we can have in the lives of our nieces and nephews while they are growing up. Being an auntie is truly such a special role to have in my life!

Their food and staff are wonderful. The staff always help my elderly mom and they are so nice. The food is delicious especially the sirloin, cherry yum yum, pineapple casserole, chicken salad and mashed potatoes. We always get something good. Love this place! - Catherine A.
We received a bunch of the frozen entrees as a gift from our neighbors following the birth of our little one. I can’t tell you how amazing they all were and how much I appreciated the convenience of being able to pop them in the oven for a quick dinner. I’m so glad to have found you guys! The prices are a steal for the amount of food you get and quality is wonderful. 10 out of 10, would highly recommend! - Brittany F.
Expect a
by RENEE SKUDRA
The physicist Albert Einstein once famously said “There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as if everything is.” The truth is that miracles are everywhere – the sun’s rising and setting, the blooming of flowers, the gorgeousness of nature and all of its inhabitants, the brace of stars we see in an infinite night heaven, the chance that love will gift us with its vagaries and possibilities, and the birth of every child. When five deer recently showed up on my front lawn, I simply had no words, but I knew I was witnessing a bona fide miracle on my quite populated suburban street and took a silent moment to revel in their unmitigated and showstopping beauty. When a friend casually remarked that our attitude determines our altitude, I realized that so often I had fallen into paroxysms of sadness and despair when my life was derailing from the hoped-for train track. The remark did not fall on deaf ears this time – my New Year’s resolution was “expect a miracle,” and that has been exactly what I’m doing – and hope you, dear reader – will too.
The word “miracle” is from the Latin word “mirus” meaning wonderful. In Hebrew, the word for miracle is “mowpheth” which also means wonder. Miracles generally are considered extraordinary events that have come about through divine agency. They are the visible results of divine intervention – if you subscribe to a faith-based perspective. Alternatively, non-religious perspectives would have it that miracles are fortuitous events, statistically unlikely but beneficial. In my own life, I have not been a stranger
to miracles. My husband’s physicians advised that he would not be able to father a child – months later, I was decidedly pregnant. When our son was born, he was in pediatric ICU a week later with four medical diagnoses: congestive heart failure, a thrombus in the brain, electrolyte imbalance and jaundice. We were informed he would not survive by 13 doctors on his team. Only his cardiologist told me “I believe in miracles, and I’m going to say unequivocally that Nils will make it.” Four months later, we brought our boy home and he joined the Miracle Children’s Network, having amazingly overcome all of his challenges. Since I am a person of faith, I believe in miracles, only I stopped thinking about their occurring because I became so mired in the grind of daily life and managing a million things that felt overwhelming.
My friend’s observation helped me get on a path of spiritual renewal as did a book which I read entitled “You Can…Expect A Miracle.” Dr. John Hinwood, an author and international speaker, practices what he preaches. In a journey that has lasted more than 25 years, he has handed out small white cards to almost everyone he has met which simply say “expect a miracle.” He argues that recognizing miracles which are abundant everywhere and letting them rekindle your sense of wonder effectively shifts your perspective so that you newly contextualize a world where everything is, in fact, a marvel. If you try to believe that something wonderful, unexpected or seemingly impossible can occur in your life, that positive mindset creates the ground for inviting those events in – despite any
challenges that may rise up and threaten to derail you. By embracing this outlook, I have watched my own life transform.
Here are some of the steps I have taken to help in expecting miracles:
1. Maintain a positive outlook. Focus on the good things in your life and believe firmly that good things can happen. When my son was accepted to graduate school at the University of North Carolina, we were living in northern California and had to be in Greensboro on short notice. I realized I wouldn’t be able to drive 3,000 miles across the country for a variety of reasons and confided this to a gentleman in the school’s Department of Housing who had become familiar with my son’s file and his special needs status. He told me that he had a weekend free and could fly out to California and drive us across the country himself. That is exactly what ended up transpiring – a thoroughly unexpected miracle. A complete stranger angel had come into our lives and delivered us safely to the steps of the university.
2. Practice gratitude – appreciate the blessings every day in your life.
3. Be open to new experiences and try new things, without reservation.
4. Actively work towards what you want to achieve and give generously to others of your love and time.
A favorite writer of mine – Wayne Dyer – has said “I am realistic – I expect miracles.” That credo has become mine as well.
A Dance For All Abilities No Limits II Dance Party
The No Limits II Dance Party is a free event organized by the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston-Salem, DSAGWS, designed to provide an inclusive and enjoyable evening for adults with Down syndrome and other special needs.
This year’s event was held on February 15, 2025 at the Wake Forest Biotech Place in downtown Winston-Salem. The dance started in the early 2000s, after the families of adults with Down syndrome thought a dance would be a great evening and a way to bring those with varying abilities together. Since then, the gathering has hit a few obstacles over the years, with Covid being one of them; but this year, the excitement for the dance was bigger than ever, and those in attendance had a great time!
FROM DANCING TO BINGO…WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?
This year’s No Limits II Dance Party had something for everyone, including bingo!
“Wake Forest Biotech Place was the perfect location for this year’s dance. We had dancing in the front of the venue with music from our DJ, Carolina Sound Machine, along with seating for those who didn’t want to dance but just to enjoy the music. The bingo room was separate, down the hall from the dance, and it was a huge hit. With exciting prizes and light refreshments for all guests, the night was perfect for everyone,” said Jay Callahan, the executive director of Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston-Salem. But, the guests aren’t the only people who have a good time.
MUCH MORE THAN A DANCE
Because the volunteers at the No Limits II Dance are family and friends of the attendees or work with people with different abilities, seeing this event come together and bring so much joy is beyond rewarding.
by CAROLYN SHORE-PETERSON
“Our volunteers are busy the entire night of the dance, either handling registration, passing out food or calling bingo. This event, for many of the attendees, is the way they see their friends who they don’t see very often; and seeing their faces light up is why we do what we do. This is so much more than a dance; it is a way for those with different abilities to come together, have fun, see old friends, make new friends and make memories to last a lifetime. The volunteers possibly get as much out of the event as the attendees do. The joy seems to spread throughout the night and, with a few years in the past when we didn’t have this event, we are back on schedule to have No Limits II Dance as an annual event,” Jay commented.
The DSAGWS is dedicated to ensuring that individuals with Down syndrome in the Piedmont area are valued, included and given opportunities to lead fulfilling lives. They achieve these goals by providing information, networking opportunities and advocacy for individuals with Down syndrome, their families, educators, healthcare professionals and the broader community.
For more information on DSAGWS, visit dsagws.org. You can also sign up for upcoming events like the Deacon Dash on March 22, 2025 and the Starlight Gala on May 3, 2025.
MUST-HAVES FOR TODDLER MOMS 6
HAVE A TODDLER?
SAVE TIME AND KEEP YOUR SANITY WITH THESE SIX
ITEMS OR TRAITS
by SUZY FIELDERS
While their hugs are oh so sweet, life with a toddler is busy and never easy. Life with two toddlers is complete chaos. As I write this, my two toddlers are 19 months old and 30 months old! Sometimes chaotic doesn’t even do justice to the daily description!
However, among all that daily chaos, I’ve found there are some things that make my life a little easier. These six items or traits are all lifesavers in saving me time or keeping my sanity.
DESIGNATED CAR TOYS
If you have a toddler, it’s pretty much a given you’ll always be rushed when trying to get out the door. You will also want these little ones entertained in the car as much as possible. We keep a kids’ purse with toys for each girl by the door. This makes it easy for when we need to rush out, and they know these are their “car toys.”
WIPE PACKS, EVERYWHERE
From pull-up changes to messy faces, wipes are quite literally your best friend as a toddler mom. There is nothing quite as frustrating as when you need a wipe and there are none in sight. That’s why we keep a pack of wipes everywhere…bathrooms, bedroom, playroom, car, table by the door and on the sofa or coffee table.
NUMEROUS SOCKS WITH GRIPS
Tiny socks somehow seem to get lost or hidden in our house, so there are never too many pairs of toddler socks. As the name suggests, toddlers tend to, well, toddle. This means they are already accident prone, so socks with grips are great for traction with little feet that love to run!
DUM-DUMS
I’m not sure what it is about Dum-Dums, but they are basically a toddler’s kryptonite. However, instead of taking their superpowers away, it provides a way to get them to be calm, quiet or miraculously behaved, even if it is only for a few minutes.
PATIENCE
While it might be hard at times to keep patience with a toddler, just keep reminding yourself “this too will come to an end.” Plus, it really is true that kids grow up too fast. Seriously, don’t blink!
GRACE
When patience runs thin, or it’s just one of those extremely exhausting days, it’s important to give yourself some grace. Don’t beat yourself up if you need to give the kids a little screen time. Also, be sure to occasionally focus on your own self care and well being for a day or even an hour. Toddler moms absolutely deserve a break and time to themselves!
Creating more choices for women
The African American Historical News Journal
Stories That Shape Our History
by MARTIE EMORY
While Chip Dolfi was producing an Afro-Centric, nationally televised show for women that focused on making smart life choices, he came upon several articles housed in the dwelling of a Boston-based historian. Knowing immediately the articles needed to be compiled in a more appropriate format, he and his team stepped in to spearhead the project.
Now the largest publisher of Primary Source Black History in the United States, the African American Historical News Journal is a compilation of newspaper articles and firsthand accounts of our nation’s history. As Chip is quick to point out as his team travels and talks to folks across the country, he always begins by saying The Journal is NOT Black History, it is American History.
“The title is just to draw attention to the information,” he adds. “It’s a very salient point and one we strive to get out to others. My own inspiration is about broadening my knowledge of American History! We have a saying, ‘if you don’t know the whole story then you don’t know the real story, and if you don’t know the real story then you don’t know the whole story of the founding of our country.’ The articles contained on these pages are part of the real and whole story.”
Currently a collection that spans coverage in many areas – entrepreneurs and inventors, politicians and statesmen, athletes and actors, war heroes and heroines – four more planned editions will highlight each of these areas exclusively.
“We also donate 50% of our gross revenue from the journals to support organizations that contribute to education, job creation, and health and well being, primarily in the African American community,” Chip shares. “Our goal is to raise $1 billion over the next five years – that would be 20 million books a year. That money will go to the aforementioned areas, as well as to the HBCUs.”
“What makes the content of ‘The Journal’ so important is that the information is not widely known, largely because it is not widely taught in our schools,” shares Chip. “Information regarding the important impact of African Americans to the founding of our country is a story all should know. We feel it’s imperative that all of us, as Americans, know the entire story of the founding of our country.
The Journal is available in both soft cover and hard cover editions – and both make a perfect gift!
“When we did our research for this edition, we culled many newspapers, articles, books and published works from the early 1700s up until 1956,” Chip adds. “Whenever
possible, we preserved the actual newspaper articles and included them in our pages. Other times, we transcribed the content of the newspapers word for word. This process is critical to the compilation as we must read the words as they were written, without the bias of any editorial influence. We want you to not only read the articles, but to put yourself into the time periods, as well – read it as though you were living the news at the time.”
Chip hopes the information shows young men and women that they can truly make a difference.
“We hope this historical information teaches them that no obstacles are too big to overcome, and we hope it motivates all to look deeper into the stories of the men and women who made a difference before them.”

March’s Must-Visit Spot Getaway Guide
Reconnect as a Family and Have a Blast at the Rumba on the Lumber Festival in Lumberton
by SUZY FIELDERS
March in North Carolina tends to be when things start warming up and getting outside feels a little more tolerable. That means it’s time to take a day – or even – weekend trip with the family somewhere fun. In this month’s Getaway Guide, I share a small NC town that even those who have lived in the state their entire lives often overlook.
Lumberton is a quaint town with tons of potential for family fun. Every March, the town hosts its annual Rumba on the Lumber Festival which originated as a 10K and has grown into a full blown, weekend-long festival for the entire family. It’s a great reason to visit a part of North Carolina you might have overlooked in the past.
DISCOVER A HIDDEN GEM OF A TOWN
Like many small towns, Lumberton offers so much more than a place to pass through. Although, it’s actually the halfway point between New York and Florida on I-95, making it a convenient stop for anyone traveling that long journey.
Jef Lambdin, Coordinator of Rumba on the Lumber Festival shares what makes Lumberton special, “The people – diverse and friendly – are always willing to share their stories and culture.”
It’s an easy drive and mostly straight down I-74, which is one of the less congested and not as accident prone highways in NC. You’ll find it situated south of Fayetteville and just north of the South Carolina border.
TOP THREE THINGS TO DO IN LUMBERTON
Outside of The Rumba on the Lumber Festival, there are three other stops you shouldn’t miss.
1. Exploration Station – This children’s museum focuses on hands-on exhibits for interactive learning and fun.
2. NEW Inclusive Playground at Pennington Sports Complex – In addition to the new playground, the 140-acre park features six baseball/softball fields, five batting cages, two regulation football/soccer fields, .75 mile walking trail, two picnic shelters and more.
3. Downtown Lumberton – The downtown area features numerous art displays and installations, dining establishments, shopping options and a River Walk.
WHY VISIT IN MARCH?
This is a fun small town to explore any time of year, but in March, it really comes alive with the Rumba on the Lumber Festival.
Jeff Cushing began The Rumba on the Lumber 26 years ago. As the years passed, the race became so much more than a race. Today, it is a true festival in every sense of the word.
This year, visitors will find the festival includes a 5K/10K/ Fun Mile run and walk, North of the Border Chili CookOff, KidsZone area, craft and food vendors, live music and entertainment, and a beer garden.
One of the best things about this festival is that most of it is free. Plus, the town has plenty of free parking near the festival which is a rarity in larger towns and cities! Families won’t want to miss the KidsZone which includes a rock climbing wall, obstacle courses, giant slide, bounce houses, soccer kick and frisbee toss!
It’s a great way to spend a day or weekend as a family and create unforgettable core memories together!

SUICIDE PREVENTION:
Overcoming Isolation and Building a Support Network
Suicide prevention is a critical public health issue that affects individuals, families and communities worldwide. As we navigate life’s challenges, feelings of isolation can intensify, making it crucial to recognize the signs of distress and develop proactive strategies. These practical tips may help prevent suicide, overcome isolation, avoid red flags and create a supportive network that fosters safety and resilience.
UNDERSTANDING THE PITFALLS OF ISOLATION
Even the most apparently extroverted and popular person can experience isolation which can then lead to feelings of hopelessness, depression and an increased risk of suicidal thoughts. Recognizing these pitfalls is the first step in taking action to prevent suicide and foster mental well being. The following risk factors may lead to an unhealthy sense of isolation and an increased risk of suicide.
Lack of Support: When individuals feel isolated, they often lack emotional support and may spiral into negative thought patterns.
Increased Emotional Distress: Regular interaction with others can help alleviate stress and anxiety. Without it, emotional distress can worsen.
Difficulty Seeking Help: Isolation can make it challenging for individuals to reach out for assistance, leading them to suffer in silence.
RECOGNIZING RED FLAGS
Understanding the signs of someone who may be struggling is vital. Here are some common red flags:
Changes in Mood or Behavior: Noticeable shifts in mood, such as increased irritability, withdrawal or expressiveness about hopelessness.
Isolation: Withdrawal from social activities and friends, or a loss of interest in previously enjoyed hobbies.
by SUSAN B.B. SCHABACKER
Talking About Death: Any conversation about wanting to die, feeling hopeless or discussing how they would end their life should be taken seriously.
Substance Abuse: Increased reliance on drugs or alcohol can be a significant warning sign.
Decline in Self Care: Neglecting personal hygiene, diet and health can indicate deeper emotional distress.
If you notice these signs in someone you care about, it’s crucial to approach them empathetically and encourage open, honest conversations.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION
Foster and Encourage Open and Honest Communication: Creating an environment where individuals feel comfortable discussing their feelings is essential. Practice active listening and empathy when someone shares their struggles. Remind them that they are not alone and that support is available.
Build a Support Network: Encourage the formation of a web of supportive relationships. This can include:
• Family and Friends: Engage in regular check-ins and shared activities to maintain connections.
• Support Groups: Joining or forming support groups can provide a sense of community and shared experiences.
• Professional Help: Encourage individuals to seek therapy or counseling if they are struggling with their mental health.
Utilize Technology for Connection: In today’s digital world, technology can play a crucial role in maintaining connections. Use social media, messaging apps and video calls to stay in touch. Virtual meet-ups can effectively bridge the gap created by physical distance.
Create a Safety Plan: Developing a personalized safety plan can provide individuals with coping strategies in times of crisis. This plan can include:
• Identifying Triggers: Recognize what leads to feelings of distress.
• Coping Strategies: Encourage finding healthy ways to cope, such as exercise, journaling or engaging in hobbies.
• Contact List: Compile a list of trusted friends, family members and mental health professionals to call during a crisis.
Promote Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Encouraging regular physical activity, a balanced diet and adequate sleep can significantly impact overall mental health. Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, can enhance emotional resilience.
Educate Others: Share information about mental health and suicide prevention within your community. Hosting workshops or discussions can empower individuals to recognize red flags and take action when necessary.
Be There: Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can do is simply show up. Let those around you know you care. Small gestures of kindness – a text, a call or a coffee date – can go a long way in making someone feel valued and connected.
Suicide prevention requires collective effort and awareness. By recognizing the dangers of isolation, understanding the red flags and fostering robust support networks, we can create environments that promote mental well being. Each of us has the power to help prevent suicide by being vigilant, showing empathy and fostering connections that uphold safety and resilience. Working together, we can create a world where everyone feels supported and valued.
CHILLY WATER FARM When Quality Matters, Eat
by MARTIE EMORY
Situated on 325 acres along the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Chilly Water Farm in Sparta, NC has brought to life a dream Sara Davis declared to her parents years ago – to be a farmer!
Sara’s mother, Kim Brown, now joins her daughter in leading and growing this womanowned, full-fledged farming operation and lovingly works to establish a shared ideal scenario of true organic farming.
Originally from the eastern part of North Carolina, the family found themselves residing in Winston-Salem while husband and father Ricky was a BB&T executive. Somewhere along the way, while making WinstonSalem their home, Sara began to seriously pursue her farming goals, spending a year studying organic farming at Maggie’s Farm in Massachusetts.
The dream, along with Kim and Sara’s enthusiasm for delivering the highest quality product, continues to grow and gather loyal customers!
“We had owned houses but never a lot of land,” shares Kim. “We started with a 52-acre Christmas tree farm that turned out to be the perfect location – it was easy for Ricky to travel back and forth to Winston-Salem for work.”
Kim and Sara began selling beef from that location in 2012 – naming it Chilly Water Farm to pay tribute to Sara’s favorite song by Widespread Panic. To start off, they only had smaller Dexter cows.
“Once we realized it took the same energy to raise a small cow as it does larger cows, we began to introduce our Angus,” adds Kim. “Now, we have mostly Angus and just a few Dexter.”
The mother-daughter duo was joined by Kim’s sister, Lynn, in 2014, and all are completely
Beef Raised Right
You’ll likely hear Kim say the best phrase of all: “Our cattle are raised with love and respect!”
focused on following the entire organic process, yielding 100% grass-fed cattle – with absolutely no hormones or antibiotics. Their beef is processed at Mays Meats in Taylorsville, NC, a USDAapproved facility in operation for more than 30 years. Chilly Water Farm beef can be found in one restaurant in the Sparta area as well as at a local meat market and one nearby country club.
The beauty of supporting local farmers means you know exactly where your meat and eggs were raised!
“We also have regular WinstonSalem customers, and we currently deliver to WinstonSalem once a month which we’re hoping to expand on,” says Kim. “Customers who are more local to the farm will email their order, and we leave it for them in a cooler. As far as pick-up is concerned, we can do whatever works best for the customer!”
The family owned farm is totally dedicated to delivering the highest quality beef around.
“Every steak cut we have is ground into our steak burgers,” she explains. “Those burgers are amazing for spaghetti, meat loaf, tacos and anything you can think of, especially for grilling – with very, very little grease! We also sell meaty soup bones, short ribs and stew beef when available.”
Around the farm, you’ll also see miniature donkeys and a goat herd that make amazing pets and delight visitors every day, as well as chickens who are living the good life thanks to natural feed, fresh vegetables and fruit snacks. Naturally, they also produce excellent quality eggs!
While you’re here picking up an order and feeling the vibe, grab a Get Chillerized t-shirt from the farm and carry on their “state of peace and harmony with a dash of cool!”

Cooking with Kids: A Fun Family Experience
Cooking with kids can be an incredibly rewarding activity, fostering both creativity and practical life skills. Getting children involved in the kitchen is a fantastic way to bond while teaching them important lessons about food, nutrition, and teamwork. Plus, kids love the hands-on experience! Whether you’re making simple snacks or trying out new recipes, Cooking with Kids is something every family can enjoy.
WHAT AGE CAN YOU START COOKING WITH KIDS?
Children as young as 2 or 3 years old can begin helping in the kitchen. At this age, they love mimicking adult actions and can start with small, safe tasks like washing vegetables, stirring ingredients, or sprinkling toppings. As they grow, you can increase their responsibilities based on their skills and comfort level. Preschoolers can begin cutting soft foods with a childsafe knife, while older kids might start learning basic cooking techniques. Starting early creates excitement about food and cooking, setting the foundation for healthy eating habits.
HOW DO YOU INVOLVE CHILDREN IN COOKING?
Involving children in cooking can be both fun and educational. Start by assigning them age-appropriate tasks. Younger kids can help with mixing, measuring ingredients, or decorating finished dishes. Older children can handle more complex activities like reading recipes, cracking eggs, or chopping vegetables with supervision. Make sure to praise their efforts, regardless of the outcome. Cooking together is a learning process, so expect some mess and embrace it as part of the fun. Consider setting up a cooking station just for them with their own kid-friendly tools, making it even more engaging.
AT WHAT AGE CAN A CHILD COOK UNSUPERVISED?
While every child develops at their own pace, most experts suggest that kids around the age of 10 to 12 can start cooking simple meals unsupervised. However, this varies depending on the child’s maturity and confidence in the kitchen. Always ensure they have a solid understanding of kitchen safety, including how to use appliances like the stove and oven. It’s a good idea to practice certain skills together, like handling hot pans or boiling water, before letting them cook solo. Even when they reach the age to cook unsupervised, it’s always smart to stay nearby in case they need help.
TIPS FOR COOKING WITH KIDS
Here are a few tips to make cooking with kids a positive experience:
1. Be patient – Cooking with kids takes longer, but it’s worth the time. Wait for a day when you aren’t in a hurry.
2. Start with simple recipes – Keep it easy to avoid frustration.
3. Encourage creativity – Let them experiment with flavors or presentation.
4. Teach kitchen safety – Explain why it’s important to follow safety rules.
5. Focus on fun – It’s not about perfection but about making memories and learning together.
6. Don’t get discouraged – The first time you cook with your kids they might not want to help that long. Over time they will develop more patience.
BENEFITS OF COOKING WITH KIDS
Cooking with kids offers a wide range of benefits beyond just learning how to make a meal. First, it helps develop essential life skills, such as following instructions, measuring ingredients, and understanding the basics of food preparation. It’s also a fantastic way to improve math skills, as kids measure and count ingredients, and strengthen their reading comprehension as they follow recipes. Cooking encourages creativity, allowing children to experiment with flavors and presentation. Additionally, it promotes healthy eating habits since kids are more likely to try new foods they’ve helped prepare. Let’s be honest though, experimenting with new foods won’t happen overnight. Lastly, cooking together fosters patience, teamwork, and responsibility, while also creating special bonding moments that children will treasure as they grow.
COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES
When it comes to easy cooking with kids, simple and tasty recipes are the way to go. Start with no-bake desserts, sandwiches, or homemade pizzas where kids can customize their toppings. Other great options include smoothie bowls, pancakes, or snack boards they can help assemble. As they get more confident, you can move on to more complex dishes like pasta, soups, or baking muffins. Keeping it fun and manageable will keep them excited about cooking.
It’s a Grand Life Grand
Family Together Time
by SUSAN WOODALL
I LOVE family trips. I can’t say I did when I was a child. I mean, who would enjoy being in an unairconditioned car in the heat of summer from early morning to early evening for two plus days? Also, imagine how the car felt sitting on hot leather seats, or when it rained and the windows were closed, or when the windows were open but you were stuck behind a truck carrying pigs as you rode around the mountain roads. Seeing and being with my grandparents for the next couple of weeks made the long drive all worthwhile.
Our daughters got to know the thrill of a family car trip, albeit way better than my childhood trips, as each summer, we would usually drive from North Carolina to Florida to visit my parents. Fortunately, the trip was only a day long. I think they would agree that, no matter how we got there, it was the best part of the summer. My parents, like my grandparents, made our visits special. It was, and is, being with family that makes the trip wonderful.
When our three daughters were ages six, nine and 12, we decided it was time to make the trip to Disney World. We had such a wonderful time, and we knew we would be back. Through the years, it has
provided us with an ever expanding family vacation to a place we all love to go every other year. We so enjoy having all the families together that we try to find another place we can all go in the off-Disney year. It is all about being with and having memory making experiences together.
This past January proved to be slightly different than all the others. The weather was most uncooperative, and our eldest grandson missed the first day and a half because of the flu. Even with that, we forged on, faced some fears and conquered them, and made memories we will regale each other with for years to come.
My main point in writing this article is to articulate how important it is to spend time with family. It doesn’t have to be a trip – unless your family is scattered to the winds – but setting a time once a week or month to have dinner together is a good start. Our families love to be with each other, and for that, we are truly blessed. Even the two oldest grandchildren make sure, when appropriate, to include their young cousins.
I hope this summer, like last, will find us able to have more time together. It gets harder each year as the grandchildren age to find an opening in everyone’s schedules. There will be summer camp and other activities the grands will be involved in which makes planning more difficult, but I am keeping my fingers crossed there will be an opening somewhere.
Maybe it will be a family trip that will bring back memories for our daughters and create memories for our grandchildren. In my head, I hear Steven Tyler from the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster ride at Disney World, saying “I love that idea.” I wonder if our daughters will know where I’m suggesting we go? I guess I need to mention it to them. But, if a family trip isn’t in the cards, I will hope that there will be time found for us all to be together even for just a day or two.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective I’m Never Gonna Not Dance Again
by A. KEITH TILLEY
March Madness is here! That exciting time of year when we watch highly competitive basketball and predict its results within our own private and public competitions, a.k.a. Brackets and Pools. However, with the advent of the NCAA’s name, image and likeness (NIL) policy that went into effect on July 1, 2021, and the NCAA transfer portal, officially introduced in 2018 and revised this season, a new type of madness has overtaken college sports. The landscape has changed dramatically and has impacted students, athletes, institutions, brands, officials and other areas that remain to be seen. Families with children desiring to play sports in college will face many more decisions, opportunities and challenges along the way.
and watching your team dissolve at the end of every season with transfers out whether you win or lose is equally disappointing. But, one team’s loss is another team’s gain. Talent gets moved around where needed, and I envision more balance in the NCAA in major revenue sports. Smaller schools that can afford the compensation packages can entice more talented players than before and pull in transfers who are more experienced at this level. Big schools have greater NIL budgets and player promotion opportunities in large markets.
It all began with the advent of the Transfer Portal which essentially allows athletes today to transfer to another comparable institution without penalty, as long as they meet the requirements. This seems fair, after all, coaches and administrators can switch locations, and now, so can the athletes. Next, another long-awaited change was implemented allowing college athletes to be compensated through endorsements, sponsorships, appearances and social media promotions. College sports is a billion-dollar business, and many more participants are sharing in the profits.
Though the merits were there for the changes, I’m not so sure everyone got the message or took it as seriously as they should have to plan for the inevitable challenges and complications that arise from this seismic shift in the major revenue sports in particular. It seems many schools and especially coaches were caught off guard by just how impactful these changes would be to their programs, cultures and routines. Which ones were impacted the most? Some examples are easier to see than others via sudden coaching departures and retirements, and what appeared to be solid programs suddenly floundering with no sign of recovery anytime soon. Legendary coaches in the sport like Tony Bennett from UVA, and Jim Larranaga of Miami for example, made what appeared to be shocking decisions to leave their positions, the former just before the season began, and the latter just after. Witnessing coaches of this championship pedigree walk away is a clear sign that all is not well in the Land of Oz. Nevertheless, you can’t put the genie back in the bottle now, nor should we try to, at least not to the original policies.
After seeing the season develop thus far, from a fan’s perspective, I think this “new game” has the potential to be very exciting as well, perhaps more so. No doubt, dealing with the NIL negotiations with agents of high school seniors has to be a challenging experience,
Thus, for the players, there’s revenue, opportunity, flexibility, upward mobility and firsthand experience with branding, marketing and promotions. For the coaches, there’s the continuous rebuilding of new teams each year, more competitive recruiting of the most elite talent, NIL budget concerns, player egos and difficult agents to contend with, maintaining student-athlete academic eligibility and, of course, they must continue to win to preserve their comfortable salaries and bonuses. For institutions, there’s more personnel necessary, including general managers and staff to manage budgets, prevent unethical practices and exploitation, tampering and poaching of student-athletes, compliance regulations, legal and marketing promotions, maintain academic integrity and make the hard decisions when necessary.
For the fans though, cheering for the same players year after year is over. You may be cheering one year for them, and the next year, they’re on your rival’s team. Winning consistency will be more difficult to maintain; expectations, however, will be the same. The game itself will also change. The pros are synonymous with quickaction offense and multiple three-pointers. College has been more diverse in that area with defense being a large part of some teams. Defense, however, doesn’t recruit as well as offense. So, I suspect the game will grow similar to the professional style. The “any given night” rule applies even more. The key difference is the college fan is a fanatic (apologies to Boston, New York and Philadelphia). They have a true vested interest in the program because many attended the schools. Therefore, I think they’ll adapt more easily to the changes as long as their team wins.
If you have a son or daughter about to venture into this new realm, I wish them the best. Their path may be different from what they expected. They will, however, benefit in ways the ones that came before them did not. It’s complicated but a good problem to have.
