Happy February, friends!

A month filled with LOVE... and my birthday! Somehow, I’m turning 35 this year—how did that happen so fast?! I hope this Valentine’s season brings you plenty of joy, connection, and sweet moments with your loved ones.

This issue is bursting with fantastic content! One article I think we ALL need to read is on page 8: Doomscrolling and Its Impact on Your Mental Health. If you can relate, I encourage you to check it out and take some steps toward a healthier relationship with technology.

In keeping with the Valentine’s theme, we’ve included a few love-centered articles to inspire you this month:

DOOMSCROLLING

and Its Impact on Your Mental Health

We have all done it; opened up our favorite social media platform of choice and begun reading all the different posts from our social media “friends” and family members. A few of these posts may be positive updates on close friends, while many turn out to be entrepreneurial posts about the latest product/activity to try. Social media can be an excellent platform used by many to boost their presence. It certainly can provide great gains in the business world for many; however, it also can be damaging if not ingested properly. As we all know, there is much more negative news out than there is positive, so what may at first be a harmless activity to enjoy while passing time can soon become a treacherous addiction where its user spends disproportionate time focusing on negative news.

This is where the term “doomscrolling” comes in. What exactly is “doomscrolling” and how does it differ from positively reading through various feeds? According to the Mayo Clinic article, “Doomscrolling: Stop the scroll, protect your mental health,” the term officially became coined in 2020. “During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of us were stuck at home, where we leaned heavily on our phones, computers and television sets to entertain us,” the article states. While using our devices helped quickly pass the time away, “these devices also exposed us to an abundance of negative information about lifestyle restrictions, protests over those restrictions, supply chain issues, empty grocery store shelves, people behaving badly and, of course, the ever-increasing death count.”

During these early days there was large uncertainty within our country. This drove many to seek out information. However, what first became a way to quickly get information turned into a “neverending loop of searching, finding negative information and searching for more.”

While, thankfully, the early days of COVID are now a memory, many have sadly developed an addiction to “doomscrolling” and now find themselves concentrating on all of the negative news on social media.

How can doomscrolling affect our mental health? Doomscrolling can be dangerous because it highlights negative thoughts and feelings.

This can lead to increased anxiety and depression. According to the article, UNC Health article, “Doom Scrolling And Its Effect On Your Mental Health,” the activity can also “lead to irritability, lack of productivity, poor concentration and mental fatigue which can further have a detrimental effect on a person’s overall sense of well being.” Countless studies found the more time we spend doomscrolling, “the more likely we are to experience sleep disturbances, stress-related physical symptoms and lower self-esteem.”

The activity can also severely affect your sleep by encouraging you to stay up later to catch up on all of the horrific news. This loss of sleep can affect your mood the following day, leading to you being less tolerant and impatient.

What are some ways to reduce the opportunity to begin doomscrolling? There are a few strategies that can help with exposure to negative news.

• FIRST, consider what sources are giving you “news.” Make sure to unfollow or mute accounts that only post negative news. This can greatly reduce the amount of negative news that pops up on your feeds.

• SECOND, set a designated time each day to review the news. By setting a timer each night as you read through your feeds, one can know when your scrolling has become mindless.

• THIRD, practice different quiet activities instead. Replace your nightly scrolling with reading a new book or listening to music. This can greatly reduce the anxiety one may feel that accompanies doomscrolling.

• FINALLY, set clear intentions on why you are picking up your phone to review social media posts. If it is to enjoy learning about the latest beauty or fitness trend, then go for it! However, if it is to find out what else is negatively impacting your world, put the phone down. Take the time to focus on your family and all the positive aspects of your life instead.

Behind the Brand

WHAT IS PERSONAL BRAND PHOTOGRAPHY?

Headshots: Headshots are the visual representation of you. They capture your professional appearance, usually focusing on your face, and are often used for things like your LinkedIn profile or your website.

Think of it as a curated collection of images that reflects your personality, values, and expertise.

Personal brand photography captures you in your element, doing what you love, and showcases the behindthe-scenes moments that make your journey so inspiring.

When done right, personal brand photography gives your audience a glimpse into your world. It helps you establish a deeper connection with your community and allows them to see the real you. It’s about building trust, credibility, and a strong personal brand that attracts your dream clients or opportunities.

How is personal brand photography different from headshots?

Personal Branding: Personal branding involves creating an authentic story that showcases your skills, values, and unique personality. By shaping how others see you and positioning yourself as an industry authority, personal branding becomes your secret sauce for standing out and attracting amazing opportunities. Using the 5 with Family

The Bible tells us love is the greatest (1 Corinthians 13:13), and it is the foundation of every healthy relationship.

Dr. Gary Chapman’s The 5 Love Languages introduced the idea that people interpret and feel love in different ways. The book turned into a phenomenon in recent years and helped many people learn more about their significant others. While the book focuses on romantic relationships, love languages can transform family dynamics by helping us understand how to love our parents, siblings, children and even close friends.

The five love languages – Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time and Physical Touch – remind us that love is a choice, and learning to speak someone else’s love language can strengthen bonds and respect. As a reminder, here are the five love languages:

1. Words of Affirmation: Expressing love through compliments, encouragement and kind words.

2. Acts of Service: Showing love by doing things that make someone’s life easier, like chores or errands.

3. Receiving Gifts: Communicating love with thoughtful presents that show care and intentionality.

4. Quality Time: Spending undistracted, focused time with someone.

5. Physical Touch: Conveying sensory love through hugs, kisses, caresses on the back or holding hands.

When applied to family life, these languages can help us better understand how each member feels appreciated and connected. The first step is to get everyone to take a free quiz to discover theirs and share with the family. Once, you’ve done that, here are ways to use them in your family:

1. WORDS OF AFFIRMATION: BUILDING EACH OTHER UP

Your kind words can change someone’s entire day. Oddly enough, the longer we’re around those we truly love, the easier it is to neglect kindness and uplifting affirmations. Compliment your child on their effort in school, sports or help around the house. Tell your sibling how much you admire their creativity. Leave sticky notes with uplifting messages on the bathroom mirror or in a lunchbox. These words remind family members that they are seen and valued.

2. ACTS OF SERVICE: LOVE IN ACTION

For some people, actions speak louder than words, and those who identify with that will resonate deeply with this love language. If a family member ranks high with this love language, there’s nothing wrong with asking what types of actions they’d like to see. And, when they tell you, do it any chance you get. Help your parents by preparing dinner without being asked. Offer to help a sibling with a project with which they’re struggling. Even small gestures, like tidying up the living room or fixing something around the house, will show you care.

3. RECEIVING GIFTS: THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS

Some people enjoy receiving tangible expressions of love. Usually, it doesn’t have to be extravagant, just thoughtful. Giving gifts to loved ones who value this love language can make them feel appreciated because you took the time to find something they enjoy. Encourage family members to exchange small, heartfelt gifts on special occasions or just because.

4. QUALITY TIME: FOSTERING CONNECTION

In busy and ever changing family dynamics, undistracted time together is priceless. For those who simply want to see their family and friends, be sure to set aside time to gather. Family game nights, intimate nature walks or oneon-one “dates” with each family member will mean so much to those who value this love language. The goal is to give your full attention and create cherishable memories that can only happen when you’re together.

5. PHYSICAL TOUCH: COMFORT AND REASSURANCE

Virginia Satir, a world renowned family therapist, is famous for saying, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Friends and family who value physical touch can benefit from a warm hug, a playful nudge in times of laughter or holding hands during a tough moment. Physical touch can be especially important for young children or teens going through the highs and lows of life. Of course, respect the personal boundaries of each family member or friend, but don’t underestimate the power of touch to heal and connect.

Families can create an environment of mutual respect and understanding by learning and practicing each other’s love languages. It’s not about perfection but about being intentional with your love. Take time to discover what makes each family member feel cherished – you’ll not only strengthen relationships but also build a legacy of love that lasts for generations.

Physician-dispensed “cosmeceutical” skincare is one of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the aesthetic industry. Experts say consumers in the US are on track to spend more than 31 billion dollars on this segment by 2029! Professional grade skincare brands such as SkinMedica, Neocutis and SkinBetter are just a few of the powerful players that aesthetic physicians stand by, and they’ve got the science and results to back up their claims. Additionally, each brand has its own unique recipe of active ingredients. But, just what are those active ingredients, and what are they actually doing to keep our skin healthy and glowing? Let’s take a look at a few major categories and learn more.

Retinoids are foundational to an effective anti-aging skincare routine, due both to their efficacy and the backing of years of scientific research. They vary in strength, from the retinol products you can purchase at the drugstore to the prescription-only brands that feature retinoic acid. Retinoids are all part of the Vitamin A family and have multiple benefits for skin health, from stimulating cell turnover to slowing the loss of collagen. They’re also scientifically proven to help manage and clear acne. With this many benefits, there’s room in every skincare routine for a retinoid – it’s just

The Secret to Radiant Skin? It’s In

The Ingredients

a matter of finding the one that’s right for you.

Any woman of a certain age can tell you that brown spots (or age spots, an even more awful name) seem to be inevitable. Sun damage, hormones and the passage of time all cause melanin production to go into overdrive, triggering hyperpigmentation, melasma or those pesky age spots. Adding a product with a brightening agent (look for ingredients like hydroquinone, vitamin C, kojic acid or alpha arbutin) will help to fade existing discoloration and regulate the body’s production of melanin.

Prestige and pharmaceutical brands are particularly excited about the potential of products that include growth factors and exosomes. A growth factor is like a cellular messenger, telling specific tissues when it’s time to regenerate and heal. Exosomes are the phone lines these cellular messages travel on, carrying growth factors and antioxidants to needy cells. The exosomes in physician-grade skincare have a unique lipid (or fatty) layer that acts as an insulator of sorts, protecting their precious cellular cargo until it reaches deep within the skin. This process boosts collagen and elastin production, which helps to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by providing a stronger framework beneath the skin and more elasticity on its surface.

Hydration is an essential step in any effective skincare routine. In terms of your skin, it’s a two-step process: we hydrate skin (with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin) by helping cells to draw in and retain more moisture, and we moisturize (with ingredients like ceramides or squalane) by applying

a barrier topically that helps keep that water from evaporating off the skin’s surface. Each step is vital, and to be worth the investment, your physician-grade product should do both well.

No matter your age or skin type, no regimen is complete without an effective sunscreen! This one is non-negotiable, and don’t skimp on the amount you use daily. Chemical sunscreens (look for ingredients such as oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate or homosalate) turn the sun’s rays into heat energy which is then released by the skin. Many aestheticians swear by mineral sunscreens (they’ll have zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as their main ingredient) which sit on the surface of the skin, reflecting and scattering UV rays. These products tend to be gentler on sensitive or acne-prone skin, and they’re also safer for marine life and coral reefs if you’re using them on the beach.

UNIVERSITY DENTAL ASSOCIATES

SCOTT F. TUCKER DDS, MS, PA

Personal Care Every Step of the Way

Continuing to build on its longtime mission of personalized care, University Dental Associates now offers eight practices in the Triad – a testament to their expertise and professionalism since opening in Winston-Salem in 1997.

With a comprehensive list of services available, orthodontics, endodontics and oral surgery often take center stage.

ORTHODONTICS

As a specialist in orthodontics, Dr. Scott Tucker shares that The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven.

“At this stage, children typically have a mix of primary and permanent teeth, allowing orthodontists to detect potential issues early. Early evaluation can identify problems such as crowding, crossbites and functional shifts, enabling timely intervention that may reduce the need for more extensive treatment later on,” says Dr. Tucker. “The majority of patients do not require intervention at this age, but an early consult has proven very beneficial for those who need proper guidance in growth and development of the jaw and dentition.” He adds that waiting to perform all orthodontics during a single phase is the preferred route, but there are instances where early intervention is necessary.

Dr. Tucker also specializes in Invisalign. “The real key to success with Invisalign has to do with patient compliance,” he shares. “We need patients who can keep the Invisalign aligners in their mouth at least 22 hours per day. It sounds like a lot, but once it becomes a part of your routine, it often becomes second nature. Most patients tend to do very well.”

Other common treatments in orthodontics involve correcting overcrowded or spaced teeth, guiding jaw growth in children, aiding in correct tooth eruption patterns and managing the alignment of teeth and jaws.

ORAL SURGERY

Dr. Matthew Schiavone specializes in oral surgery at University Dental Associates and

describes the most common reconstructive procedures as bone grafting at extraction sites or other areas of the jaw that are missing teeth – including performing sinus grafts. These procedures are done to facilitate implant placement in the future.

“Fortunately, 3D x-rays are now readily available, enabling us to quickly and accurately assess if a patient is a good candidate for an implant,” he explains. “Additionally, we can use computer software to plan and – 3D print – a surgical guide for use during the procedure. This decreases surgical time and allows for very precise implant placement.”

He notes some misconceptions about implants include that the crown placed on top of the implant will look or feel drastically different than the natural teeth. In general, and especially for replacement of a single missing tooth, the implant crown functions very similarly to a natural tooth. Also, people may believe that implant surgery and associated recovery periods are particularly painful. However, many patients report this procedure is easier than having a tooth extracted.

ENDODONTICS

Endodontics treats problems that affect the inside of the tooth, often leading to a root canal.

“Yes, decay is the most common reason, but you may also need a root canal due to a cracked tooth or trauma,” shares Dr. Elizabeth Applebaum, who specializes in endodontics and root canal therapy. “A root canal is a non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This inflamed or necrotic

pulp is removed, and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and is often completed in one visit. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases.”

Inside each tooth root is a channel that runs the length of the tooth and contains the pulp (nerves, blood vessels and soft tissue) which is often referred to as the “nerve” of the tooth. The pulp may be irreversibly damaged by bacteria associated with decay, very deep restorations, fractures, trauma or periodontal disease. It’s often necessary to remove the diseased pulp tissue in order to preserve a tooth which is known as endodontic therapy.

As a leading dental practice in North Carolina, the professionals at University Dental Associates understand the anxiety and inconvenience associated with any kind of treatment or surgery, and their skilled staff will be with you every step of the way. Most oral surgeries performed at their North Carolina locations are completed in less than one hour.

University Dental Associates offers hours Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and is available 24/7 for emergencies. To find a location or schedule an appointment online, visit udadentistry.com. Winston-Salem practices are located at 131 Miller Street, 336.837.2680, 1615 S. Hawthorne Road, 336.768.3454 and 2020 Village Link Drive, 336.923.4262. In Clemmons, find University Dental Associates at 6201 Town Center Drive, Suite 130, 336.778.9199, and 2311 Lewisville Clemmons Road, Suite 301, 336.631.4770.

Level Up Your

The cold weather keeps many of us indoors during winter, but that doesn’t mean your family or friends need to miss out on fun. Game nights are a great way to bond, play and simply enjoy time together.

Are you tired of the same old game nights and want to try something different? Here are seven game night ideas to mix things up.

ANTE UP

When I say ante up, I don’t mean you necessarily need to use money. But, you can have rewards for winners. It can be simple prizes, like candy or small items. Or, it can even be less tangible things like getting out of chores for an amount of time or getting control of the remote one night.

PICK A THEME

Have a themed game night. You could do mysteries like murder mystery games. You could even throw in a mystery movie after the game. If you have older children (usually 12 and up), my family loves those Hunt A Killer games. They have all you need in a box to solve the mystery.

Disney is another great theme since there are so many game options. They also pair well with Disney movies to make a whole day of it. We love these two Disney games, Villainous and Hedbanz.

PAIR OFF

If you have four or more participating in game night, try team games. A couple fun ones are Pictionary and Apples to Apples (there is a kids version). You can also turn two player games into a team game and have teams work together as one player.

CHALLENGE YOUR INTELLECT

Pick games that allow you and your family/friends to challenge your intellect. Some great options are Scrabble (or Scrabble Soup for younger kids), Battleship and Clue.

GO RETRO

Play classic games from what I like to call a simpler time. A few of my family’s favorites are Mall Madness, Candy

Land, Twister, Guess Who?, Monopoly and Life. Think back on your childhood and the games you loved playing. Now is the time to let the next generation enjoy them, too!

GET DIGITAL

We have an old school Super Nintendo which is always fun! No matter if you pick a current or older gaming system, going digital is a great way to enhance game night. Since most video games are two players, turn them into tournaments to get everyone playing.

PLAY CARDS

Even with a simple deck of cards, you can have a full game night. Some ideas are Rummy, Go Fish, War, Crazy Eights, Poker, Hearts and Blackjack. There are also many fun special deck card games like Uno and Old Maid.

Whether you use one of these or incorporate several, I hope they make for fun family game nights this winter!

Blind spots, in the realm of investing, can be likened to the unnoticed smudges on a pair of glasses. They obscure a clear view of reality but can easily go unnoticed. In the world of finance, this can have costly implications.

Imagine Sarah, an IT executive. She’s tech savvy and feels very confident investing in the tech sector. She sees the potential in every new startup, understands the nuances of emerging technologies and believes fervently in a tech-dominated future. Because of this, Sarah’s portfolio is overly weighted in tech stocks. While she might understand the industry, she may have placed herself at risk if there’s a downturn in the tech sector. Sarah’s blind spot is an over reliance on what she knows and loves.

Similarly, James, a loyal, longterm employee of a publicly traded company, may hold a significant portion of his investments in his company’s stock. It might seem like a good strategy, given that he believes in the company’s mission and its potential. Yet, objectively, he may be exposed to high risk if that one company faces a headwind. His blind spot is the deep-seated belief that his company stock is the right choice when diversification likely makes more sense.

We All Have Money Blind Spots Making Dollars, Making $ense

Ava, a dedicated environmentalist, heavily invests in green companies. Her passion for sustainability guides her choices. However, her portfolio may be at risk due to its lack of diversification. While she believes in the potential of green energy, the industry is prone to market fluctuations and technological shifts. Ava’s blind spot is her emotional attachment to the cause, potentially overshadowing a well rounded investment strategy.

Managing these blind spots can be challenging, but here are a few steps you can take:

1. DIVERSIFY YOUR PORTFOLIO: Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket. Diversification helps to spread risk across different types of investments. Even if you have a strong belief in a particular sector or company, it’s essential to have a mix of assets to cushion against potential downturns.

2. SEEK PROFESSIONAL ADVICE: Just as an athlete might benefit from a coach, investors can gain perspective from financial advisors. These professionals can provide an objective view of your investments, helping you identify areas of risk and suggesting ways to optimize returns.

3. REGULARLY REVIEW YOUR INVESTMENTS: Financial markets and industries evolve. What might have been a good investment a few years ago might not be the case today. Regularly reviewing and adjusting your portfolio ensures it aligns with your current financial goals and market conditions.

4. SEPARATE EMOTIONS FROM INVESTING: It’s natural to have emotional attachments, like Ava’s passion for sustainability. However, investment decisions should be based on sound financial principles and not solely on emotions. It’s essential to strike a balance between personal beliefs and financial prudence.

5. EDUCATE YOURSELF: Continuously educate yourself about the financial markets, emerging trends and investment strategies. The more informed you are, the better equipped you’ll be to recognize and address any blind spots in your investment approach.

Keep in mind that emotional resistance often comes when confronting our blind spots. Just like someone might be surprised to find out they’ve been running “incorrectly” all their life, an investor might feel a sting of pride when it’s pointed out that their stock picks aren’t as savvy as they thought.

In reality, everyone has blind spots, not just in investing but in various facets of life. They shape our choices, often without our realization. By acknowledging their existence, seeking external guidance and being open to feedback, we can navigate the treacherous waters of the investment world with a clearer vision. After all, the goal is not just to invest but to do so wisely and efficiently.

ProStone Granite & Cabinetry

Prepare To Be Inspired

If home is your favorite place to be, think about how much time your family spends in the kitchen – cooking together, gathering around the table after a long day or entertaining friends.

It’s the place where you’re craving comfort, as well as function and durability. Now, imagine an updated version of the most popular room in your home that is beyond welcoming!

Serving the Triad for more than 20 years, ProStone Granite & Cabinetry is a family owned business with two amazing fully stocked showrooms – one in Winston-Salem and the original location in Greensboro – where there’s no shortage of new ideas and design inspiration when you need it most. Whether

you’re a fan of marble, granite or quartz, you’ll easily find a stylish choice to love!

The ProStone team and their meticulous process assures your project will be stress-free and efficient, beginning with a realistic, manageable timeline that suits your family’s needs and schedule. Here’s how it starts:

VISUALIZATION

If you’re fairly early in your update dreaming and trying to imagine a new look, take plenty of photos or create a rough sketch of the area you’re looking to update. The ProStone team will want to get a glimpse of your vision and hear your expectations for the finished product.

INSPIRATION

Time to visit the showroom, where you’ll view model kitchens and baths, plus cabinetry in a variety of finishes. The ProStone showroom in Winston-Salem is a destination of designer options for both your kitchen and bath – the two most popular places to launch a much-anticipated home makeover because of the amount of time you spend there. Another detail that sets ProStone apart – they can typically give you a price right there in the showroom. “Most potential clients are impressed that we can give them a price on the spot!” says Ross.

PREPARATION

A trusted member of the ProStone team will visit your home for a free consultation, take measurements to create a template and provide expert guidance. Then, through the magic of their software program,

you’ll see a glimpse of what your completed project will look like – and that same software will keep your project on target and on budget!

INSTALLATION

Thanks to a full inventory that stocks around 40 different stones, ProStone stands behind the promise of a quick turnaround for most kitchen and bath projects. Plus, they will only sell you the materials your project needs – never the entire slab. Besides unwavering professionalism, there’s another important detail that sets ProStone apart. “We do not use subcontractors for any of our work,” shares Ross. “Our installers all work directly for us, and many have been with us for several years.”

Updating the kitchen and bath areas of your home is a significant investment and an update that will increase the value of your home. Your family will enjoy this “new look” to the fullest, and later, when you’ve decided to sell, prospective buyers will see your home as “move-in” ready!

For kitchen remodels and general renovations, Ross says he’s also still seeing high demand for quartz countertops – and both quartz and granite have their strengths and weaknesses to consider. Quartz is low maintenance and nonporous which means it resists stains and bacteria without sealing and is known for its durability and varied design options. However, it is not 100% heat-resistant and can be damaged by hot pots or pans. It also lacks the unique patterns of natural stone.

Granite is known for its durability (heat, scratch and chip-resistant), its natural beauty and unique patterns and colors, and being eco-friendly, as a natural material with no synthetic additives. On the downside, granite is porous and may require sealing to prevent stains and bacteria, and may need regular resealing.

As for trends, Ross shares that whites and grays are still very popular, but they are also seeing warmer colors begin to enter the market.

Known for their commitment to excellent communication, affordable pricing and a dedication to the client’s complete happiness with the finished product, ProStone is the respected choice for home projects in the Triad.

LEAD Girls of North Carolina is kicking off the new year with an exciting partnership creating additional leadership opportunities for middle-school-age girls in Forsyth County. LEAD Girls and Crosby Scholars have established a new dual enrollment program enabling participants in LEAD Girls to also join Crosby Scholars.

“We are thrilled to join forces with Crosby Scholars as we both work to help students achieve, lead and contribute,” said Joy Nelson Thomas, Founder and Executive Director of LEAD Girls of NC.

“As a community, we want to be pouring all of our available resources into lifting up these young people – our future leaders, lawyers, engineers and teachers.” Thomas worked closely with Crosby Scholars President and CEO Mona Lovett to develop the new program. “Through this program, we’re reaching even more young girls as they enter their formative school years,” said Lovett. “We’re instilling in them the confidence and leadership skills that will pave the way for them to realize their potential as they pursue their career and college aspirations. Our partnership with LEAD Girls strengthens the work we’re doing to ensure these young students have a continuum of services throughout middle and high school.” LEAD Girls has identified more than 300 of its middle school participants as well as LEAD Girls alumni currently in high school who are eligible for the dual enrollment program. They will join the more than 140 LEAD Girls already participating in Crosby Scholars.

LEAD Girls board member Jasmine Pitt also helped shape the new program through her personal experiences as a Crosby Scholar during her middle and high school years.

“Leadership development programs like LEAD Girls and Crosby Scholars create life-changing opportunities for young people in our community whose potential may not match their available resources,” said Pitt, a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Law and an attorney with Akerman LLP in Winston-Salem. “With this innovative dual enrollment program, more LEAD Girls participants can take advantage of Crosby Scholars’ unique career and college exploration programs and expanded spaces for community service.”

Are you considering homeschooling your teenager or currently looking for tips?

Homeschooling offers tons of great opportunities and benefits, like flexibility, choosing your own curriculum and making your own schedule. Putting curriculum together and keeping track of everything does tend to get overwhelming though. If your child is in high school, it gets even more challenging.

PLAN AROUND POST-HIGH SCHOOL PLANS

First and foremost, it’s important to consider your teenager’s long-term plans. What do they plan to do after high school? Go to college? Start a job? Take a year off? All of these will factor into your overall homeschool plan. For instance, if they plan to go into the workforce, you should focus on classes that feed into what job they’d like to go after. Whereas, if they plan to go into college, you should focus on SAT test prep and classes that line up with their intended major.

High School Like a Pro

START A TRANSCRIPT ASAP

As soon as you start freshman year, go ahead and start a transcript. Starting it immediately and keeping up with it will make things much easier closer to the end of high school. Even if your child isn’t considering college, it’s good to have it in case they ever change their mind or if an employer wants to see it. I created my own just by looking around at resources online and in homeschool Facebook groups. It really wasn’t hard at all, thankfully!

UTILIZE RESOURCES

The only real downfall I found with homeschooling high school is I oversaw finding out everything. It’s important to track down resources, from social media groups to websites, and always keep those bookmarked.

One example of a big high school item that needs to be dealt with is driver’s education. That’s something a public or private school tends to take care of but, in homeschool, it must be done on your own. I had no clue what to do and spent a lot of time researching. Luckily, there are lots of great private driver education schools in our area. Don’t forget to get the Driver’s Eligibility Certificate (DEC) form from the DNPE website.

FOCUS ON CONTENT, NOT GRADES

While it’s great to have grades for the transcript, one of the biggest benefits of homeschooling is you can focus more on the content vs. standardized tests. You can still have grades but not make them the major focus like it tends to be in public schools. Instead, focus on electives your teenager is interested in and topics in main classes that they feel passionate about.

CREATE A SCHEDULE THAT WORKS FOR YOUR FAMILY

When kids are little, we constantly hear about how much sleep they need, but somehow, it gets glossed over in the teenage years. However, it’s more important than ever. So, if your teenager tends to be a night owl, consider letting them do coursework then and get extra sleep in the morning. Or, if they rise with the sun, go ahead and knock things out and do other things the rest of the day.

I hope these tips help you and your teenager navigate homeschooling high school with a little more ease!

Meadow Lane Flower Farm

Sharing the Joy of Fresh Cut Flowers

True to her lifelong passion for the gifts of gardening, nature and the great outdoors, Amy Davis is finding joy in her newest venture of flower farming.

Originally from Glassboro, NJ, Amy moved south to attend High Point University, graduating with a degree in fine arts. After happily teaching art for the past 25 years, her retirement plans include a full time focus on cut flower farming with an organic approach to gardening.

“I became even more interested in flower farming when I moved to WinstonSalem, and a neighbor noticed my love of gardening and the property I had and suggested I look into flower farming. It was so intriguing – I decided to give it a go!”

Established in 2022, Meadow Lane Flower Farm enjoyed its first growing season in the spring of 2023 and is located within a voluntary agricultural district in Pfafftown, NC. Amy’s favorite flower varieties – at least so far – are tulips, hydrangeas, zinnias, dahlias, larkspur, sunflowers, daisies, ranunculus, rudbeckia and snapdragons.

After an easy online ordering process, your favorite flowers will be available in the farm’s flower shed, and pick-up times can be arranged on an individual basis. Amy provides lovely ready-made flower arrangements in various sizes as well as individual buckets of any blooms that are currently growing on the farm. These flower mixes are perfect for events, local florists and anyone who simply wants to arrange their own bouquets to spread a little joy!

Another interest she shares with the community, Amy features edible flowers for the food industry, including Nasturtium, Bee Balm, Anise Hyssop, Pansies,, Marigolds, Johnny Jump Ups, Lavender, Roses and herbs including Basil, Cilantro, and Parsley. Meadow Lane Flower Farm also sells eggs and local honey available year round while supplies last, and Amy plans to add even more bee hives to the bee yard this spring.

Besides continuing to foster support for local agriculture and farming, Amy also plans to host flower arranging classes for the community, complemented by painting or yoga.

“The flowers are always the center of the classes I offer because they promote wellness and happiness, and all people respond positively to fresh flowers,” she adds. “We use the flowers that we arrange as inspiration for the art we do. I’m also building a barn onsite this spring to sell farm products – and will also use the space to hold workshops and classes that combine the arts with agriculture.”

In partnership with the Arts Council of Winston-Salem, this old-fashioned “barn raising” at Meadow Lane will provide the perfect setting for individuals to create art that’s inspired by the idyllic farm setting.

“Imagine being in a serene and peaceful environment, surrounded by nature – a place

where you can escape the noise of everyday life and unleash your creativity,” shares Amy.

The vision for the new barn is to blend art and agriculture, offering the community a really unique and fun experience. Contributions to the farm will help create a space where everyone can connect with the land, flowers, animals and nature.

“I’ll host workshops, classes and events that promote well being through creativity,” Amy adds. “These classes will be open to individuals of all ages and will cover a variety of arts and crafts.”

Look for Amy’s passion for nature to bring continued joy throughout 2025!

For more information on what’s in bloom at Meadow Lane Flower Farm, or to donate to the official barn raising this spring, visit Meadowlaneflowerfarm. org. Reach Amy at 336.906.9623, email meadowlaneflowerfarm@gmail.com and follow @meadowlaneflowerfarm on Instagram. Online orders may be picked up at the farm’s flower shed at 5811 Meadow Lane in Pfafftown.

The Birthday Book: A Legacy of Love for Your Child

The year our son was born, his father and I began collaborating on a secret endeavor we called the Birthday Book. Every year on our son’s birthday, we would pause to reminisce and celebrate the blessing of our longawaited only child. We did this in a way that froze special childhood moments in time, not only for us, but also for our son. Our Birthday Book simply consists of letters, love letters from his father and me. Because the entries were crafted while our memories of the previous year were fresh, these annual letters trace a precious path through the years.

The goal was to create a handwritten legacy that we would present to our son on a yetto-be determined milestone birthday many years in the future. But, here’s the bittersweet truth – time really does fly! That milestone day, which once seemed so far away to us as young parents, came for us in 2024. So, yes, I am writing in hindsight about our Birthday Book, hoping to encourage you to create one for each of your children. I promise you won’t regret it!

In addition to capturing precious, fleeting moments of childhood, a Birthday Book might one day answer your grownup child’s questions, such as:

WHAT WAS I LIKE WHEN I WAS LITTLE?

A Birthday Book is a golden opportunity to show an adult child what a delightful little person he or she was. Here are two excerpts from our Birthday Book:

From Daddy: One night, I was working in the office downstairs in the house. You had trouble sleeping because of an extra-long nap that day, so you came quietly knocking at my door at 11:30 p.m. You were wide awake, and you crawled up onto my lap while I was

working on the computer. Then, you looked up at me and said, “Dad, do you know things about God and stuff?” I replied “yes,” and you went on to ask me why God gave us toenails.

From Mommy: One day, we were in the garage, and you noticed some white masks hanging on the pegboard. Daddy had used them to cover his nose and mouth while spraying paint. You stared up at them and said in a tone of amazement, “Did you guys used to be dentists?”

WHAT TRAITS WERE EVIDENT WHEN I WAS YOUNG?

Early on, we noticed that our son had a love for detail, a great sense of humor, a fondness for books and language, and, as the excerpt below shows, a loving, sensitive spirit.

From Mommy: On Christmas morning, you entered the living room and saw a pile of presents under the tree. We expected you to dive in and begin ripping paper, but you didn’t. Instead, you asked your daddy to search among the presents for the gift your dad helped you pick out for me. The expression on your face as you handed me the precious package will be etched in my memory forever. Your eyes beamed a mixture of love and joy and pride. Carefully, I opened the gift. It was a Raggedy Ann doll like the one I told you I had as a little girl. That doll is a gift I will always treasure, but the way you gave it was an even greater gift.

DID MY PARENTS REALLY LOVE ME?

Even adults who had happy, secure childhoods sometimes seek proof that they were loved as children. No one knows what the years ahead may hold for your family. If what is now unthinkable should

occur – parental death or divorce – if your adult child ever doubts their parents’ love, their Birthday Book will contain your handwritten reassurance.

TIPS FOR

CREATING

A BIRTHDAY BOOK

A Birthday Book is an heirloom that only a parent can create. No one else holds the key to the treasure chest of memories that bond a unique parent to a unique child. Even though it costs practically nothing, a Birthday Book is priceless!

HERE ARE FIVE TIPS:

1. Buy a Book

Choose a hardcover book with blank, lined pages. Buy a large book, so you don’t run out of room in just a few years.

2. Keep Notes

As things occur in your child’s life, make notes. When the time comes to write your Birthday Book entry, you will have everything you need.

3. Use Scratch Paper First

If you organize your thoughts on scratch paper before you write in the book, it will help eliminate unnecessary details and minimize mistakes that you will have to cross out.

4. Give Examples

Instead of writing, “You are a curious fiveyear-old,” write what your child actually said and did that shows their curiosity. Real stories will help bring your Birthday Book to life.

5. Begin This Year.

You can start a Birthday Book at any point in your child’s life. Don’t dismiss the idea just because your child may be beyond their preschool years. Every year is full of memories that you can preserve forever on paper!

Celebrated the week of February 14th through the 20th, Random Acts of Kindness Week is dedicated to promoting kindness throughout the United States. While events and acts of kindness take place throughout the week, there is a great emphasis on the National Random Acts of Kindness Day which is February 17th. This day was first honored in Denver, Colorado in 1995. According to the website, Love ‘N Learn Educational Child Care, the day is set aside to “make the world a little brighter and better through little and simple kind gestures, words, and actions.” As for the week, its history dates back to 1982 when Anne Herbert coined the phrase “practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” Herbert crafted this phrase in California as a response to acts of violence and cruelty, hoping to put a stop to them. In 1993, a children’s book, Random Kindness and Senseless Acts of Beauty was published. From there, the Random Acts of Kindness Week and Day have spread throughout the world, all with the same goal of making the world a little kinder.

In addition to making the world a better place, giving and receiving kindness can have many benefits. When you are helping others and yourself, you can reduce your stress, improve your happiness, self-esteem, and mood - all beneficial to your mental health and wellbeing. In addition, showing kindness can help create a sense of belonging, reduce our sense of isolation, and help us change our perspective on the world. Through random acts of kindness, we are able to see how our actions have impacts on others and give us a more positive viewpoint. Combine all of these advantages together and we can easily see how kindness can change the world for ourselves, individually and collectively, and for the better.

During Random Acts of Kindness Week and especially on National Random Acts of Kindness Day, be sure to show kindness towards yourself and others. Whether it is by yourself or with your loved ones, the goal is to complete at least one random act of kindness, hopefully each day of the week. The key to accomplishing this goal is to make sure the acts are random. You don’t have to put much thought into them; you just do them because they are kind and the right thing to do. Simple actions, such as holding the door open for a stranger or giving a compliment, don’t take much time and can easily be done. However, it is equally important to take part in bigger tasks that may take more planning and time to complete, but are random and a surprise to the

Be Our Guide to Changing the World

recipients. One way to do just that is by showing kindness on a larger scale on Friday, February 17, the National Random Acts of Kindness Day. You can also turn Saturday and/or Sunday of that week into daylong events of volunteering.

There are many ways to demonstrate kindness, which can be modified for all ages, as well as, for an individual or group.

• Donate groceries to a local food bank

• Surprise someone with homemade goodies

• Donate food, blankets, and toys to the animal shelter

• Run an errand for a family member, neighbor, or friend

• Create positive bookmarks for books at your library

• Leave money on a vending machine for someone to find

• Call your neighborhood school and pay off lunch debt for students

• Buy a gift card and randomly hand to a stranger in a store or restaurant

• Write a thank you note to your friends, teachers, mail carrier, police department, hospital, etc.

• Pick up a piece of litter on the street and throw it away

• Compliment a coworker to your boss

• Build a little free library in your neighborhood or a needed area in town

• Reconnect with a friend you haven’t spoken to in a while

• Write an encouraging note for someone who may need it

• Volunteer at your favorite nonprofit

Let this week, the Random Acts of Kindness Week, be the start to changing the world. Kindness should be the norm for all people and each day should be filled with at least one random act of kindness. Together, we can make an impact for the better. As spoken in the movie Evan Almighty: “How do we change the world? One single act of random kindness at a time.”

for your Family Balancing Breakfast

Bacon, cinnamon rolls, sausage, muffins, pancakes, cereal, toast with jelly…do any of these make their way into your family’s breakfast routine throughout the week? Breakfast is great for sending your kids off to school with a full stomach and ready to learn, but if you’re not careful, some of these common breakfast foods can be high in fat, sugar and carbohydrates. Consistent consumption of these foods every morning can influence their health. Take cereal as an example. Most cereals marketed to children are high in sugar with very little fiber or protein. This means that your child will eat it and momentarily feel full, but what’s happening inside of their body is an increase in blood sugar that then rapidly decreases. Your child will be hungry again sooner, and they may not be able to pay attention for as long as they would have if their breakfast contained more filling nutrients. And, the same rule applies to us adults! Our breakfasts need to be high in nutrients, as well.

How do you provide breakfasts that will last longer and improve health? Pay attention to the number of food groups you and your family consume at breakfast, and look for foods that have fiber and protein. Fiber is a nutrient that is not absorbed and helps to lower blood sugar and fill us up. You can find fiber in fruits and vegetables as well as grain products, even some cereals! When looking at the food label, aim for at least three grams of fiber per serving of food. As you start looking at fiber on the nutrition label, you will notice the difference in quality of nutrients in some of your favorite cereals. Protein is also just as important as fiber. Protein is digested much slower than carbohydrates as it passes through our bodies which keeps us fuller longer and keeps our blood sugar stable. The average adult should be aiming for at least 100 grams of protein per day. If you eat three meals a day, that’s around 25-30 grams of protein at each meal (plus protein in your snacks) to get to 100 grams. That cereal you’re eating at breakfast probably has very little protein. You’ll get protein from the milk you put with your cereal, but you may also need to add boiled eggs or a side of nuts to help you increase your protein intake.

Here are some nutrient-dense breakfast ideas that your whole family can enjoy. Get your kids in the kitchen with you as you put some of these breakfast foods together. A few can be prepared ahead of time and then heated up in the morning. Others are quick enough to throw together before school and work! They include several food groups and can be higher in protein and fiber!

BREAKFAST BANANA SPLIT: One banana cut lengthwise, topped with Greek yogurt and sprinkled with high fiber cereal. Add additional fruit on top, if you’d like!

PROTEIN PANCAKES: Use a pancake mix that is higher in protein and fiber. Top with blueberries and have scrambled eggs on the side.

HOMEMADE EGG MCMUFFIN: One piece of Canadian bacon, a slice of cheese and scrambled egg whites placed inside of a toasted whole wheat English muffin. It’s a homemade version of a popular fast-food breakfast.

MUFFIN QUICHES: Scramble eggs and mix with vegetables of your choice, such as onions and broccoli. Add in a touch of milk and shredded cheese. Pour into sprayed or lined muffin tins and top with paprika. After baking, you’ve got mini quiches that can be reheated for breakfast throughout the week.

PARFAIT: Layers of flavored Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and high fiber cereal. This one is similar to a breakfast banana split, but the presentation is fun!

Valentine’s Day Traditions to Start with

Your Children

Calling all parents! Valentine’s Day is such a fun time of year when we get to show our loved ones how much we love them in special ways. I know that oftentimes it feels like the day is only reserved for couples, but why not bring our kiddos into it and create fun traditions with them? If you’re looking for some cute ideas to celebrate your children this Valentine’s Day, keep reading for some inspiration.

“WHAT I LOVE ABOUT YOU” DOOR

This one is so simple but so meaningful! All you need is construction paper, a marker, tape and scissors. I personally love receiving words of affirmation, and I love giving them to my son even more. Start TODAY! For each day in February through the 14th, add a paper heart with a reason written on the heart for why you love them, then tape it to their door. Each day you add another heart, another reason. Feel free to keep it going all month long!

MATCHING PAJAMAS

Grab some matching pajamas for the whole family and celebrate by having a movie or game night together!

FAMILY DATE NIGHT

Instead of only doing a date night for the parents, invite the kids to do one, too! You can go with any kind of vibe you want, but we get all gussied up then head to a special place for dinner. Whatever you decide to do, make sure to incorporate something to make it special.

SCAVENGER HUNT

Who doesn’t love a scavenger hunt? You can get as creative as you want with this, and there are lots of ideas online. It can be a great way to engage the kids and have an activity every day leading up to Valentine’s Day or just on the day itself. Maybe there’s a big surprise reveal at the end, or maybe the prize is the satisfaction of finishing. Either way, it’s sure to keep your kids busy for a while and provide lots of smiles.

BAKE AND DECORATE

VALENTINE’S DAY

CONVERSATION HEART COOKIES

Have some fun with your kiddos in the kitchen! Bake heartshaped sugar cookies, then decorate them as the conversation heart candies or however you want to. Make it a family affair, and don’t be afraid to get messy.

CREATE A “BE MY VALENTINE” JAR

Decorate a big mason jar or any kind of cup to fit the theme of Valentine’s Day with glitter and stickers. During the first two weeks of February leading up to Valentine’s Day, family members can write reasons or things they love about one another and put it in the jar. Then, on Valentine’s Day, each family member can take turns reading them out loud. Make sure you put some guidelines in place so that everyone gets an equal amount of “love notes.”

CREATE A THEMATIC TABLESCAPE

You can do this for any meal, but I suggest breakfast or dinner. You can grab simple decorations from the Bullseye Playground in Target or the Dollar Tree. Add some fresh flowers and candlelight, then make (or order in) a special meal for the family to share. It is such a fun way to make a meal at home extra special!

BONUS: GIFT FOR THE DAUGHTERS

This one is for you, Dad! Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity for dads to show their daughters the way they should be treated by men. Give them a simple gift like a rose, stuffed animal or chocolate. If you have a son, help him get a rose or something pretty for his mama.

Whatever you do, the point is to bring your children into the fun of Valentine’s Day and make sure they know how loved they are. It might be even more fun for the parents because of all the fun that’s sure to be had!

COPPEDE TIPS FROM THE PROS: How to Declutter and Destress Your Life

With spring right around the corner, the idea of spring cleaning may be a daunting task to consider.

However, there are a few ways to begin the task by making an inventory of items you already have, then deciding whether to donate or toss them out. Rather than dedicating an entire weekend deep cleaning out your space, try starting small.

According to the Reader’s Digest article, “15 Things Professional Organizers Do Daily to Stay Clutter-Free,” consistency is the first key strategy. “Small, manageable daily routines help you declutter your life and train your mind to be more organized,” the article states. Cleaning and organizing professionals offer easy methods to help you stay on top of decluttering year round, eliminating the stressful need of deep cleaning your abode. If you are like me and need this advice on where to start, read on for seven tips on how to tackle this process.

ALWAYS HAVE A “DONATION BAG” READY TO GO. By having a set place to put your not needed items, you can amplify your decluttering efforts. Continue to add to the bag by scanning your home for something to give away as often as possible. Set aside time to take a quick look at things that have not been used in a while like clothing, food storage containers, kitchen gadgets, etc. Finally, when the donation-ready shopping bag is full, load it in the car, take it to the local charity thrift shop, then repeat.

GET RID OF JUNK MAIL DAILY. This seems like an obvious step, but it is surprising how many hold onto old mail in the hopes that they will be able to use that coupon for their favorite restaurant. If you are like me and fall into this category of coupon hoarding, set aside time once a month to go through the coupons, throwing away expired ones. You can accelerate your mail sorting process by buying an accordion file to sort paperwork into three main files: “To Pay,” “To Do” and “To File.”

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

HAVE A GO-TO SPOT FOR YOUR DAILY ACCESSORIES. This is a simple decluttering tip and great method to prevent losing important accessories like car keys, air pods, etc. Try hanging a lidless bin on the wall, or a simple basket or bowl will also work. Having this right by a door will help remind you to place these items there upon returning from an outing. Make sure to go through the bowl often though to eliminate not needed items like old receipts, etc.

THROW AWAY YOUR OLD BEAUTY

PRODUCTS. According to the Buzzfeed article, “Throw It Away!: This Professional Organizer Is Going Viral for Calling Out the Everyday Items in People’s Homes That Belong in The Garbage,” these unused items should be an easy method to clean out your cabinets. Allyson Cartwright, a Baltimore, MD based professional organizer advises sorting your products into four categories: “daily morning routine, daily nighttime routine, special occasion self care products and special occasion makeup products.” She insists that everything else can be trashed. “I know it’s scary, and I know it feels like such a waste, but I promise you, these items are not serving you. They are doing the opposite. They’re in the way of the products that you’re actually using and the products you actually love.”

DO NOT FORGET THE MEDICINE

CABINET! From the same article, Cartwright mentions how expired medicine also has no place on our shelves. Set aside time to go through all your medicine baskets and get rid of anything past the expiration date. Also, make sure you are using the products in the baskets versus storing them. Like the makeup, old lotions are not serving us if they are just sitting in a basket or bin.

SET ASIDE FIVE MINUTES DAILY. This is a simple and manageable amount of time that one can use to begin tackling whatever decluttering needs to happen. Use those five minutes to declutter your sock drawer, organize your junk mail or eliminate not needed items from the in and out bowl. You can easily build onto these five minutes, but at least this can give new declutterers a place to begin.

GIVE AWAY SOMETHING EVERY DAY. I realize this may seem intense, but it is not. It does not need to be an expensive pair of jeans you cannot fit in, but rather a book you have loved but would like a new friend to now enjoy. If you do the math, by giving away one item a day, by the end of the year, you have eliminated your space of 365 not needed items.

NURTURING NEW NORMS:

Each month, this series introduces fun and impactful healthy habits to help families with kids and teens prioritize physical, mental and spiritual well being – fostering a lifestyle of shared growth and lifelong wellness. Healthy habits built together are the ones that last a lifetime.

Introducing your children to the concept of giving back and the power of making a difference, you’re inadvertently helping them develop a deeper sense of empathy and responsibility. Teens and adults have more opportunity to volunteer whether through work, church or community organizations, but children of all ages can get started with the right options.

WHY VOLUNTEERING MATTERS IN CHILDHOOD

Any opportunity to share different perspectives with our kids is a win. Oftentimes, volunteering includes visibility to different lifestyles, environments, socioeconomic status and community, and world issues with which they may not be familiar. Opportunities to get involved and volunteer to make a difference helps cultivate a kid's emotional growth and provides them with individual pride and confidence knowing they can make a difference no matter how small! Imagine being five years old and realizing that even your small contribution and kindness can create positive change for people, animals and even the planet!

MAKING VOLUNTEERING A LONG TERM PRACTICE

While volunteering individually may be something your preteens and teens may have a desire to do, including the family as a whole can help create beautiful bonding experiences. Not only are you building memories together, but working towards a common goal is incredibly rewarding, as well.

Choose projects and causes that are age appropriate for all family members that will be participating, and block time on your calendar to find them. Set a reminder to sign up to volunteer once a quarter, twice a year, each holiday season – whatever works best for your family! Seeing volunteering as a family activity and adding it as a time stamped activity, really creates a tradition that reinforces the value of helping others as a lifelong habit.

VOLUNTEERING AS A

Virtue

Here are a few simple ideas to nurture the new norm of volunteering this month:

1

COMMUNITY DAYS

Big cities and small towns alike usually host their own community projects each year. Popular events like beach or park clean ups, community garden planting, Habitat for Humanity build days, charity 5Ks and family friendly fundraiser events are all in need of volunteers. Look out for these kinds of community days, and sign your family up, not just to exhibit giving back but the power you have to create real impact right where you live, as well. Working alongside their own neighbors in their community can also reinforce the mindset of “we’re all in this together.”

2

PASSION PROJECTS

If you really want to get your kids on board and excited about volunteering, lean into their favorite passions! Do you have a daughter obsessed with animals? Volunteer at your local animal shelter or help run a pet adoption weekend locally. Maybe your son loves video games and Pokemon trading? Look up a local conference or “con” event that might need volunteers to set up their vendor area or stuff swag bags. Choose activities that complement their individual interests, showing them how their favorite things can create really amazing change in the world around them! If you have multiple children with different interests, consider rotating choices for volunteer projects over the year.

3

HOLIDAY GIVEBACKS

The spirit of giving is never in short supply during the holiday season! From clothing drives, angel gift trees, food bank donations and more, October through December has plenty of chances to volunteer in your local community. Ask your church, youth sports coach, schools, local nonprofits and other contacts if they are running any “give back” days or kindness drives that you and your family can take part in. This time of year is an important one to remind children about gratitude for all they have and how beautiful and important it is to give back to those less fortunate.

CREATING PRACTICES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

Keep planting those seeds of growth, gratitude and impact that you want to see flourish in your family! One of the greatest gifts you can give your kids is helping to raise them to be empathetic, confident and self-aware individuals. Instill in them at a young age that true generosity isn’t just giving away money or things, but committing your time, energy and love to something outside yourself.

Kitchen Products You’ll Love for Making Life Easier

While I’m a decent cook, being in the kitchen isn’t really my favorite space. So, I’m always looking for ways to save time. This is especially true when I’m trying to get meals together quickly for my family that includes two toddlers and a teenager. I certainly don’t want any hangry people in our house!

Here are five of my favorite kitchen products that I not only love but actually use.

FRUIT BASKET

I opted for a three-tiered fruit basket, and it’s seriously one of my favorite things for the kitchen. It seems simple but keeps all the fruit together and opens up space in the pantry. Plus, having it on the counter for everyone to see usually helps us remember to eat all the fruit before it goes bad.

ELECTRIC CAN OPENER

My mom actually gifted this to me several years ago, and I love it. It is so easy to use and opens cans quickly. Best of all, there are no sharp edges with opening this way versus the traditional, by-hand can opener.

AIRTIGHT FOOD STORAGE CONTAINERS

We have a relatively small pantry, so I was constantly getting frustrated trying to find things in there or not having enough space. I ended up purchasing a set of airtight food storage containers on Amazon, and it drastically helped our pantry situation. I’d recommend opting for a set that has different sized containers. It’s also better to get clear containers to easily and quickly see what’s in them.

SILICONE KITCHEN UTENSILS SET

I used to always have all the kitchen utensils, like whisks and spatulas in a drawer, and constantly having to shuffle things around to find them. Then, I found a kitchen utensils set that had everything in a nice container to sit on the counter. I keep it beside the stove, and it makes it so easy to grab something quickly. The silicone is best since it’s easy to clean and non-stick.

CANISTER SET

Finally, I love the canister set I have on the counter. They are great for storing sugar, flour (in my case, gluten-free flour), etc. Bonus, they come in so many colors, you can easily match any color scheme in your kitchen. All of our kitchen stuff is teal!

Other than the electric can opener, I found all of these products on Amazon. That made it so easy to purchase and ship. I hope these kitchen products help you save a little time and rejuvenate your kitchen!

Be Well Table

WHIPPED PROTEIN HOT CHOCOLATE

Indulge in this creamy, high-protein whipped hot chocolate – a cozy treat that’s perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth while keeping you fueled!

Servings: 2

Prep time: 10 minutes

Total time: 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS:

1 scoop of chocolate protein powder

1 T cocoa powder

1/4 cup powdered sugar

2 cups milk of choice (I use cow’s milk)

3/4 cup heavy whipping cream

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. In a medium metal or cold glass bowl, add cold heavy whipping cream, chocolate protein powder, cocoa powder and powdered sugar. Beat on high until the mixture starts to form soft peaks. Be careful not to overwhip – the whipped topping will sink if you do!

2. Warm the milk in the microwave until it becomes hot. Add milk to a mug and top with the whipped protein hot chocolate. You can put it in a piping or Ziploc bag and cut the corner of the bag with scissors to make it look fancier with a piped swirl!

3. Top with marshmallows, chocolate chunks or sprinkles!

February’s Must-Visit Spot Getaway Guide

As February is the month of love thanks to Valentine’s Day, it seems fitting to share a destination that you will fall in love with! This spot is a little further, so take advantage of the distance and make it a weekend getaway this month.

Wilmington offers visitors a little bit of everything, from delicious dining options to unforgettable waterfront views. Every February, the annual North Carolina Jazz Festival is held in Wilmington, adding to the city’s southern charm. So, whether you plan to have a romantic getaway or want a unique family weekend, Wilmington is the place to go this month!

A ONE-OF-A-KIND WATERFRONT CITY

If you’ve ever strolled along the waterfront in Wilmington, you won’t be surprised it was voted America’s Best Riverfront!

Wilmington River District and Island Beaches share the uniqueness of this area on their website. “From the River District and Riverwalk that winds around the storied Cape Fear River to three colorful island beaches, there’s something about the water here in Wilmington, NC and our beach towns – Carolina Beach, Kure Beach and Wrightsville Beach – that speaks, surrounds and transforms visitors. As North Carolina’s most accessible coastal destination via interstates and an international airport, the area’s location, natural beauty, culture and history all charm visitors and residents alike, making it the ideal place to get away for a vacation or weekend.”

It’s quite literally a straight shot from Winston-Salem to Wilmington as I-40 leads right into the city. Although, depending on where you are located in Forsyth County, the alternate route of I-74 & US-74 might be faster.

TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN WILMINGTON

When you visit Wilmington there are so many things to do that it’s hard to keep track. However, below are five must-do activities while you are there.

1. Battleship North Carolina – This World War II era battleship combines learning and fun as you get to see how sailors lived firsthand.

2. Airlie Gardens – Every point here is gorgeous with so many great photo opportunities. Plus, many films and shows, like 28 Days and Dawson’s Creek, were shot here.

3. Fort Fisher State Historic Site in Kure Beach and North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher – This is a three-for-one-spot as you can see the historic aspects of the fort, enjoy the beach and see all the cool animals at the aquarium.

4. Museums – You won’t want to miss these four great destinations: Cameron Art Museum, Cape Fear Museum of History and Science, Wilmington Railroad Museum and Children’s Museum of Wilmington.

5. Boat Tour – Finally, whether you pick a sunset or beach tour, maybe even a kayak tour, you’ll want to get a tour on the water when you visit the Wilmington area!

WHY VISIT IN FEBRUARY?

You can’t go wrong visiting Wilmington any time of year, however, February is a great time for a couple of reasons. First, it’s typically warmer than here in the Triad! Next, you don’t want to miss the annual North Carolina Jazz Festival.

The North Carolina Jazz Festival is the biggest traditional jazz festival in the southeast and is celebrating 45 years this year! It includes three nights of jazz music from Thursday, February 6th through Saturday, February 8th.

Plus, on Saturday, they host a patron jazz brunch. Everyone can enjoy music from the All-Star musicians. The last hour is extra special as any patron enjoying the brunch who is a musician can play alongside the All-Star musicians.

Whether you want to have a weekend getaway with your special someone or bring the family down for a post-holidayseason vacation, Wilmington is the place to go this February. Enjoy amazing jazz music and stunning waterfront views!

President’s Day A CELEBRATION OF THE U.S. PRESIDENTS

Every third Monday in February, Americans celebrate President’s Day, a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the nation’s past leaders. But, while the holiday has evolved into a day filled with mattress sales and car discounts, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the true significance of the day – and, perhaps, have a few laughs along the way.

President’s Day, as we know it today, was originally established to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. Washington’s birthday, February 22nd on the Gregorian calendar, was initially recognized as a national holiday in 1885. However, when the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed in 1968, President’s Day was moved to the third Monday in February, ensuring a long weekend for American workers.

While it was originally intended to celebrate Washington, the holiday now serves as a day to honor all U.S. presidents – whether they’re remembered for their legendary accomplishments or, let’s say, their less-thanstellar moments in office. The result? A holiday that doesn’t necessarily focus on one person but rather celebrates the quirky, colorful and sometimes downright strange history of the presidency itself.

RUMORS AND FACTS

For instance, did you know that President William Howard Taft, the 27th president, was rumored to have gotten stuck in the White House bathtub? At 330 pounds, Taft’s love of food was legendary, and the story goes that he was once unable to extricate himself. Although this was only rumor, not fact, President Taft did indeed need to travel to Panama to inspect progress on the Panama Canal. Prior to the trip, he had a bathtub custom built and installed for himself on the USS North Carolina. The tub measured seven feet, one inch long, 41 inches wide and weighed one ton. Taft’s “bathroom troubles” may not make for the most

glamorous legacy, but they certainly add a touch of humor to the history books.

Or, consider President Andrew Jackson, the seventh president, who had a bit of a temper. It’s a fact that Jackson once had a duel with Charles Dickinson, a man who had insulted him. While the deadly duel two years earlier between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton is the most famous in American history, Jackson was a frequent dueler among the prominent politicians of the dueling age, which lasted up until the Civil War era. The future president survived Dickinson’s first shot, but Jackson’s pistol jammed. In a breach of the code duello, Jackson re-cocked his pistol and killed Dickinson. Jackson’s toughness became the stuff of legend – though, let’s be honest, most people would have stayed away from any duel if they knew it involved such bad manners and poor judgment.

PRESIDENTS AND THEIR... UNIQUE INTERESTS

President’s Day also provides the perfect opportunity to explore some of the more unusual hobbies and quirks of U.S. presidents. For example, President John Quincy Adams had a rather interesting way of starting his day – he enjoyed an early morning swim in the Potomac River, often without his clothes. Talk about a daring start to the day! His morning routine must have given new meaning to the idea of “early risers” and “streaking” in the 19th century.

President Calvin Coolidge enjoyed horseback riding for exercise, and when the secret service asked him to give up his

rides, in the interest of safety and time, he acquired an electric horse for the White House. He would ride it up to two to three times a day, and the mechanical horse had two variable gaits, “trot” and “gallop.”

PRESIDENT’S DAY TODAY: FROM SALES TO CELEBRATIONS

While the holiday may have started with a more somber and serious tone, today, President’s Day is largely recognized as a time for great deals and sales. Americans flock to stores, both physical and online, to snag everything from appliances to clothes, and yes, even mattresses.

But, don’t let the commercialization fool you. Despite the mattress ads and car dealership promotions, President’s Day is still a time for many to reflect on the history and legacy of America’s leaders. It’s a reminder that, while the presidency may have its ups and downs, it also provides some hilarious and eccentric stories that make this holiday anything but boring.

A PRESIDENTIAL TOAST

So, this President’s Day, whether you’re basking in the glow of a mattress sale or reading up on the more humorous aspects of U.S. history, take a moment to raise a glass to the oddities, mishaps and triumphs of our presidents. They may not always be perfect, but they sure make for an entertaining bunch. In the end, it’s not just about commemorating the great leaders; it’s about enjoying the ride through American history – flaws, fun facts and all. Happy President’s Day!

Sharing African American Inspiration on the Historic Town of Salem Old Salem Museums & Gardens

In celebrating February as Black History Month, Winston-Salem’s own historical treasure – Old Salem – invites you and your family to join in on a monthlong tribute to the African American influence on the growth of the local Moravian community.

Nestled in the heart of Winston-Salem, the Old Salem historic district offers a beloved glimpse back at Moravian traditions in the 18th and 19th centuries, bringing to life the intricacies of daily living that influenced the community’s future growth.

During Black History Month, a visit to the popular Old Salem Museums & Gardens will greet you with themed interpretations throughout the historic

district, mini lectures and specialty guided tours every Saturday throughout the month.

This special weekend programming will include “spot talk” lectures focused on Black History themes at the Visitor Center on Saturdays at 11:00 a.m.

Guided walking tours will also be offered on these Saturday afternoons from 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Known as their “Living Legacy” guided tours, these will be included free with Old Salem admission on Saturdays during the month of February. Families can come and explore authentic

demonstrations and stories in our buildings, then meet Old Salem guides at 1:30 p.m. for a detailed guided walking tour, viewing the history of the town from the perspective of changes to Black History over time.

This “Living Legacy” program and Old Salem’s Hidden Town project are designed to research and reveal the history of African and African-descended people in Salem.

“We use these programs to celebrate Black History throughout the year and especially love to highlight them during Black History Month,” shares Director of

Education Tara Logue. “Local Black History is key to the story of Salem and, later, of Winston-Salem as a whole. We love that the more you learn about the roots of it all and the stories of specific individuals, the more it puts everything else about our town into context. Whether you are looking at cultural influence or the industrialization of our region, you won’t get very far in your storytelling without the contributions of Africans and African Americans. That’s part of why our walking tours in February will be focused on a story over time. It creates a backdrop that you can place everything else against to provide a more comprehensive picture.”

Visitors are always encouraged to ask thoughtful questions and engage in one-on-one conversations with Old Salem’s interpretive staff. You can explore the unique stories of some of Old Salem’s most impactful community members this month and witness their true living legacies!

The lectures and walking tours are included with regular Old Salem admission, and guided tours offer a 40-person capacity.

Mark your calendars now for the following Saturday adventures at Old Salem during Black History month: February 8th, February 15th, and February 22nd

For the afternoon guided tours that begin at 1:30 p.m., visitors are invited to meet in front of the Frank L. Horton Center located at the end of the Heritage Bridge.

For more information and to purchase general Old Salem tickets, visit oldsalem.org. Old Salem Museums & Gardens is located at 900 Old Salem Road, WinstonSalem, NC, 336.721.7350. Follow them on Instagram for events and updates @oldsaleminc.

At the heart of this unforgettable event is a mission that saves lives. For 20 years, Pretty In Pink Foundation has been a lifeline for local breast cancer patients, who we call our Champions.

“Many of our Champions face the impossible choice between paying for their lifesaving medical treatment or covering basic living expenses,” explained Sayla Nedell, Pretty In

Pink Foundation’s director of business development. “They’re dedicated, hardworking individuals in our community who may be living paycheck to paycheck when they’re hit with this devastating diagnosis. Our role is to step in and eliminate the financial obstacles to care, so they can access the treatment they need to overcome this terrible disease.”

Pretty In Pink Foundation provides grants to qualifying breast cancer patients in North Carolina to help with surgeries, chemotherapy administration, radiation, insurance co-pays, deductibles and premiums, as well as COBRA. We pay the medical providers directly to alleviate any stress to ensure the patient can focus on taking care of themselves – giving them a fighting chance to overcome breast cancer.

“We’re proud to say that we’ve been able to serve every qualified applicant who has come to us for help,” said Nedell. “We don’t receive any state or federal funding. Our work is only possible through the support from the community. And, what better way to support our mission than by attending Triple Crown Casino Night? It’s a fabulous, fun event! This is a chance for this area to come together and make a real difference.”

Triple Crown Casino Night has become more than just a fundraiser – it’s a celebration of hope, resilience and community spirit. Every year, attendees from across the region gather to enjoy a night of entertainment and make a meaningful impact. Last year’s event was a tremendous success, and this year’s promises to raise the bar even higher!

“The energy at Triple Crown Casino Night is just incredible,” said Nedell. “You’re not just having a great time – you’re part of something so much bigger. Every ticket sold, every sponsorship and every donation brings hope and healing to those facing this life-threatening disease.”

Bring your best poker face and join us for a night to remember. The 4th Annual Triple Crown Casino Night is your chance to have fun, make connections and support a cause that truly matters.

The Crafting

OF A DELICIOUS DINING EXPERIENCE

From the most enticing menu, imaginative cocktails, and extensive wine list— including many from your favorite local wineries—there is just so much to love about Six Hundred° in Winston-Salem.

This significantly beautiful space greets you with oversized windows, a genuinely happy vibe, and the spirited setting of the Innovation Quarter, promising an experience for all your senses!

There’s the chef-driven menu, offering a collection of locally sourced dishes prepared over a wood fire, with the skill and passion that make every entrée incredibly unique. From delicious small plates to seasonal specialties, it’s always a treat to be seated at the culinary bar, where you can watch the chefs at work. If you’re celebrating a special occasion (it’s February, after all!), grab a seat at the cocktail bar and enjoy watching the

bartenders show off their expertise as you sip on something wonderful!

With all this to love, nothing could be more perfect for a memorable Valentine’s Day celebration than an evening bathed in their impeccable ambiance and finished with one of the chef’s romantic dinner specials. With February 14th arriving on a Friday this year, plan to relax with one of their Valentine’s Day featured cocktails or a bottle of fine wine to toast your one and only!

Perhaps best of all, you’ll always know your favorite Six Hundred° dish was created with the freshest ingredients, almost always from a local source.

“We love the quality of the ingredients we get from local farms and vendors,” shares owner Jeff Bacon. “We do beautiful things with those! Even the firewood for our woodburning hearth is local, and we try to get most of our proteins from North Carolina— definitely the pork is all local—and most of the seafood.”

The restaurant relies on local farmers, including Fair Share Farm and Heritage Harvest Farms, both from Pfafftown, NC, for the naturally grown greens, microgreens, and mushrooms that you’ll love the taste of in many of their signature dishes.

With a creative flair that’s centered around the roots of Southern cooking, head chef Todd Martin takes flavorful to a new level at Six Hundred°, and the menu offers

something interesting for every palate. Jeff will tell you his current favorite menu item is an old-school dish his chef has made lighter and more modern—the Chicken Fricassee!

With a charming view of Bailey Park from their supremely comfortable patio, Six Hundred° is also a local favorite for a laid-back Sunday brunch and a gem for dining and socializing any day of the week, boasting some of the finest hospitality you’ll find in the Triad area.

While you’re enjoying getting to know their creative menu and unrivaled level of service, here’s a fun bit of trivia: The restaurant’s name is truly a reflection of the fact that 600° Celsius is the temperature at which gas evaporates from wood inside a bonfire to produce embers—what could be more authentic than that?

For locals and new explorers of the vibrant Innovation Quarter alike, Six Hundred° is a must for dining and relaxing!

Six Hundred° is located at 450 N. Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem, NC, 336-283-6754. Learn more about their distinctive menu, group reservations, or hosting your next private event at sixhundreddegrees.com. Follow this favorite Winston-Salem dining destination on Facebook and Instagram @Sixhundred_ wsnc. Six Hundred° is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, and for Sunday brunch.

Define Easier: Working Mom vs. SAHM

There’s been an ongoing debate among moms about whether being a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) or a working mom is easier, and I want to shed light on the issue. First off, being a mom isn’t easy – period. Parenting, in general, is one of the toughest jobs anyone can take on. Whether it’s supporting your child emotionally or making tough decisions to keep them safe, there’s no “easy” option. Moms often feel additional pressure, especially the mental load that comes with managing a household – planning meals, laundry, appointments and more. This invisible workload makes it hard to compare roles because each has its own challenges. So, is one role easier than the other? Let’s look at both sides.

WORKING MOMS

The biggest challenge working moms face is balancing career demands with motherhood. Work takes time away from children, and the pressure to perform well at both can be overwhelming. Whether driven by financial needs or personal ambition, working moms must juggle deadlines, meetings and responsibilities at home.

One of the hardest parts is missing out on milestones – first steps, words or even bedtime routines. This often leads to guilt: “Am I present enough?” Moms want to be there for their kids, yet work pulls them away.

On top of that, companies don’t make it easy. When a child is sick, it’s usually the mom who takes time off, sacrificing personal leave that could’ve been for self care. Missing work for family duties can create tension at the office, while neglecting home responsibilities feels like a failure as a mom. It’s a no-win situation.

Childcare is another major stressor. With both parents often working, finding and affording good childcare is tough. Rising costs make it hard to justify having two incomes, yet for many, it’s essential for survival. And, even when there’s help, coordinating logistics usually falls on the mom.

At the end of the day, working moms must excel in their jobs, be present for their children and maintain their partnerships.

STAY-AT-HOME MOMS

Stay-at-home moms face different but equally challenging pressures. The bulk of the work is mental, but there’s also the expectation to handle household tasks and manage finances. Spending all day with children, often with minimal breaks, can lead to overstimulation and exhaustion.

Being constantly needed – whether for emotional support or physical care – makes it hard for SAHMs to find a moment for themselves. Overstimulation from noise, touch and endless demands can take a toll. Planning activities to keep children occupied without relying on screens adds more mental strain. Society also imposes unrealistic expectations on stay-at-home moms. The house should be spotless, meals ready and the children entertained – all while keeping it together emotionally. The reality, though, is that even completing one household task while caring for a child can feel like a victory.

There’s also immense pressure from social media, where content creators often present an idealized version of SAHM life. Trying to keep up with these unrealistic standards can leave moms feeling inadequate.

At the end of the day, stay-at-home moms face the constant challenge of balancing household chores, child-rearing and maintaining their own well being – all without a change of scenery or break from the routine.

CONCLUSION

Both roles come with their own unique difficulties, so the question of “what’s easier” doesn’t have a clear answer. Whether you’re working outside the home or within it, motherhood is a full time, demanding job.

It’s a Grand Life Grand

Responsibility, A Life Lesson

I must admit I was having trouble coming up with this month’s article. I started on one several times only to erase it each time. As I was turning over in my mind what to write about, I glanced over at a gift we received this Christmas. It is a wonderful frame that pictures can be sent to at any time from anyone you allow access. Our daughters have already sent several, and it was seeing them that helped clear my blocked brain.

Responsibility. At what age do we become aware that things are expected of us? I’m not sure some people ever get that message, but I digress. My mom was always amazed by the things I could remember from when I was three years old. I still have memories of certain events but wonder if now it is because of pictures I saw or stories I heard. I tend to think that most of the ones I vividly remember are because they had an impact on me. So, do I remember doing anything that would count as a responsibility? Not at age three for sure.

The age of five is when I know there were certain things expected of me. It was my job

to set the table for dinner. I was to put away my toys after I finished playing with them, and I was to take my dishes to the kitchen and throw away any trash. I know for a fact that I was often reminded to do the previously mentioned items.

As a stay-at-home mom, my daughters had certain things expected of them, but no specific chores. I remember trying a chore chart, but with the three of them, their after school schedules and homework, sometimes it was easier to do things myself. Looking back, I realize that was not a good example to set. As in life, we occasionally have tasks we’d rather not do, but we shouldn’t expect others to do them for us.

I remember reading about one mom who put a box at the bottom of the stairs. She would collect things that her children brought down that belonged in their rooms. All she asked them to do was take it up at the end of the day. There was also a box at the top of the stairs to return things that belonged downstairs. She decided that the items must not be special to them if they remained in the box. She hid them away. When her kids started looking for them, she gave them

a chance to have them returned. However, the next time it happened, it was their last warning. They had to earn the right to get them back. Knowing she was serious, the boxes soon became empty.

Interestingly, of my seven grandchildren, it is the youngest who will clean up the playroom and his room, sometimes without being told. The others are pretty good about it. A couple of them need to be asked, sometimes several times. When I am staying with them, they know I will expect them to help out. I see a chore/ reward chart in their future.

Responsibility. As parents and grandparents, it is up to us to teach our children and grandchildren the importance of being responsible and taking responsibility for one’s actions or inactions. This is a lesson most learn early on in life, but they may need the occasional reminder – especially when the boxes at the bottom and top of the stairs start filling up.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective Is This Love?

Have you ever seen a couple and thought “Why is she with him?” It might be his appearance, personality, character “flaws” and occasionally age difference that incites confusion or uncertainty in general among the viewing public. The question can go both ways, of course, it just seems to be more often focused on the male partner as the disadvantaged one. I’ll direct this topic towards the younger generation, as they are more likely to not fully understand what’s happening in these scenarios.

According to the American Community Survey, a 2021 study by the US Census Bureau, nearly half (47.3%) of all households in the United States contained married couples. Furthermore, the study indicated couples are marrying slightly later in life as compared to about 50 years earlier. In 2021, “the median age of first marriage was 29.2 years old (30.2 for men and 28.1 for women).” Compare this to the same study from 1973, where “the median age of first marriage was 22.1 (23.2 for men and 21 for women).”

With this in mind, notice that couples tend to meet when they are younger, likewise, they also wed when they’re younger. However, as time goes by in their marriage, they each get older. As you might expect, they don’t always age gracefully in the same manner. So, occasionally, one doesn’t age quite as well as the other. Hence, it makes people who don’t know them and are strictly judging on appearance ask themselves that unimportant question. So, what’s the answer you say? Eckhart Tolle said, “To love is to recognize yourself in another.”

In my opinion, I can tell you another answer that often happens –vision loss. They both endure vision loss, though not literally. Love has an interesting progression. As long as the relationship stays on solid ground, and no one does anything too foolish, we usually continue to see the person we love, similar to when we first met. As time elapses, couples are naturally inclined to develop similarities in their characteristics, including personality, perspectives, values, preferences and emotions. Some even start to form a resemblance in appearance, likely due to shared emotional states and the mimicking of facial expressions and body language. Social Scientists refer to this as “partner convergence.” It happens as a byproduct of living together and having deep affection and respect for each other.

Our emotions are strong when it comes to love. In our minds, we continue to see our love interest in their best light, for the most part, even as the years pass by quickly, and that’s a good thing. “The

greatest happiness of life is the conviction that we are loved; loved for ourselves, or rather, loved in spite of ourselves.” ~ Victor Hugo. You see, it’s this ability to see them at their best that makes the heart stay strong and loyal.

“I saw that you were perfect, and so I loved you. Then I saw that you were not perfect, and I loved you even more.” ~ Angelita Lim.

I should mention it’s not just your vision that stays in that previous focal mode, it’s also your feelings about them. You remember the strong feelings you experienced in the beginning. You remember them because they were good, and they made you happy. If you’re lucky, those sensations and that vision stay with you for a lifetime.

For the fortunate ones, that’s why they’re able to share so much love, joy and good times, even though today, they don’t appear to be the same couple on the outside as they were several years earlier. There’s a Swedish Proverb that says, “Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow.” They know each other, and they understand how each side thinks and feels, what they like and dislike, their quirks, good qualities, strengths, weaknesses and more. They remember what the other enjoys eating, their favorite type of movie, their hobbies, who their friends are, the music they love, their favorite vacation spot, their saddest moment and their happiest moment (both often shared together).

As this phenomenon begins to occur, they also learn something else about love – it evolves. Some relationships evolve better than others, but nonetheless, they all evolve in their own manner.

“All relationships go through hell, real relationships get through it.” ~ Unknown.

The couple that learns to adapt and grow in ways that benefit each other tends to be the most successful. No magic potion, or process, guarantees the results. It just happens naturally.

So, the next time you see a couple where one partner is considered more conventionally attractive than the other, remember, you’re only seeing the relationship iceberg above the water line. The remaining majority lies underneath the surface, unseen.

“A woman knows the face of the man she loves as a sailor knows the open sea.” ~ Honore de Balzac.
