Valentine’s, Forsyth Family readers! I wish you a month full of sweet surprises! I was hopeful for the start of a brand-new year, but if I’m honest, it’s not exactly starting off great for me personally. My dad passed away just a couple days into the New Year and I’m not sure it has hit me quite yet.

My mom and dad married right out of high-school and parenthood happened quickly for them soon after. I was the only girl with two younger brothers. Growing up, I was definitely a daddy’s girl, following him around to help with whatever project he was working on at the time. Sadly, we were quite distant these past few years and it broke my heart. He had been in declining health for some time and would not allow me to help with his care the way I would have liked.

I loved him and he loved me and my brothers. I’ll be forever grateful for the brief time we had with him in his final moments. As with many things in life, it’s complicated! Losing a loved one is never easy, but its more than the loss of them physically, it’s also the loss of the hope of a better relationship that will never be.

Tina S. Merhoff & Associates opened 18 years ago. While I never doubted the Lord’s plans, I could not have predicted the challenges and blessings that would take place within these jungle-painted walls.

This last year brought us all a curveball. Your kids schooled at the kitchen table and learned to wear a mask outside of dress-up time. Our practice temporarily closed, introduced new protocols, and pushed through the unknown. Through it all, the Lord was faithful and sustained my family, my team, and this practice. He continuously redeems me and has filled me with a heart of gratitude. My hope is to let this overflow into my daily life with my patients.

As pediatric dentists, our primary goals are teaching and empowering children to optimize their oral health and conservatively to restore when required. My associate, Dr. Jennifer Macdonald, and I stress healthy hygiene habits and nutrition to prevent cavities. It’s the most important aspect of my job. My schedule has more than double the amount of preventative appointments as restorative appointments. And yet cavities still happen.

What is a cavity? Teeth are made of three layers—enamel, dental, and pulp.

Everyone’s body is composed of good and bad bacteria, and the same is true for the mouth. And when the bad bacteria flourish more than the good bacteria, infection occurs. When the bacteria break through the enamel, the cavity needs to be cleaned out and restored—redeemed.

We are often asked, “Do we need to treat the baby tooth? Won’t they be losing it? Shouldn’t we just pull it?” You’re right; your child will lose their primary (baby) teeth eventually; however, those primary teeth have an important role in your child’s growth and the development of the surrounding soft and hard tissues. These tissues contribute to a child’s speech, nutritional intake, and health of the future permanent teeth.

The majority of our body’s functions can self-correct or heal with modern medicine, which is really amazing. Unfortunately, teeth cannot. When a cavity erodes the enamel of the tooth, that enamel is lost and cannot be healed. But it can be compensated for with filling material. It can be redeemed. I am so grateful for the skillset the Lord has given me to impact my patients.

The children who attend our Give Kids a Smile function receive comprehensive care. This includes everything from routine dental cleanings and examinations to fillings and pulpotomies with crowns. The most redeeming part of the day is the time spent educating the children and their parents on best oral hygiene practices and healthy nutrition.

With February being Children’s Dental Health Month, our office likes to celebrate with involvement and giving back to the community. We love seeing children’s faces light up with excitement and wonder meeting the tooth fairy. Our office has been a long-time supporter of the national program, Give Kids a Smile (GKAS). In partnership with the public dental hygienists, children from the community are welcomed to our office to receive comprehensive dental care. Our entire team volunteers their time to care for these kids, and generous local businesses provide their services to make this day a true highlight.

FINANCIAL AWARENESS: Top of the Mind in 2021

With

all the uncertainty and financial ups-and-downs of 2020, advancing financial awareness initiatives in 2021 is undoubtedly top of the mind for me and my colleagues in the credit union industry. Credit unions worldwide view the advancement of financial awareness as a core value. While each of our credit unions is unique within the communities we are privileged to serve, we work collaboratively with each other and community-based organizations to reinforce an area’s capability to raise consumer financial awareness and increase access to financial literacy and education.

On a personal level, financial awareness means different things to different people.

For some, it comes with how best to save and plan for retirement. For others, it’s learning to budget and manage day-today expenses. For many, it’s improving credit scores and managing debt.

At Piedmont Advantage Credit Union, we view financial awareness as a key to understanding how to save, earn, borrow, invest, and protect your money wisely. Financial awareness is essential to develop short- and long-term financial behaviors and skills that lead to obtaining and maintaining financial stability.

I challenge you to make financial awareness top of the mind in 2021 for yourself and your family. Even if you’re a planner by nature, some life events happen unexpectedly, as we learned all too well in 2020. Yet, the more prepared we are with our finances, the better we stay in control of any situation that is thrown at us.

Here are a few words of wisdom that I referred to in 2020 and will continue to do so in 2021, so that I can keep financial awareness at the top of my mind personally and for our members.

Have a plan to save.

Prepare for the unexpected by coming up with a plan to save money each month.

According to Bankrate, nearly three in 10 adults have no savings. One in four have a rainy-day fund, but not enough money to cover three months of living expenses. Having six months of your living expenses in savings is recommended to hold you over in case of financial emergencies. A financial emergency can be a life-changing event, such as the loss of a job or medical emergency, or it can be on a smaller scale, such as a car repair or replacing an appliance. Unfortunately, this past year showed us all that a financial emergency is not always just a single event.

Remember that building an emergency fund is a marathon, not a sprint. Any amount saved can help offset larger expenses, even if it doesn’t cover them completely. Don’t be consumed by trying to build the emergency fund over one pay period. Set realistic goals and build your savings over time. If you experience a setback and have to use some or all of your savings for a financial emergency while working towards your goal, just stick to your saving plan and keep going.

While there may never be an ideal time to start, why not now? In continuing the “running” analogy, getting to the point of completing the 26.2 miles of a marathon takes time. Running 5 miles, then 10, then

18 and so forth builds toward the goal of 26.2 miles. With your savings, the same is true as you establish savings to cover one week, then one month, and eventually the full six months! Strategies for starting an emergency savings fund may be found at PACU.com/EmergencySavings.

To have a plan to save, get back to the basics with a household budget.

There is a saying in the financial-planning world that failing to plan is planning to fail. The process of planning begins with knowledge of your finances. Without knowing where you stand today, it is difficult to chart a plan for where you want to be tomorrow. Prior to the worldchanging due to COVID, my family was on the go constantly for games, practices, and other activities for the kids. That time on the road equated to a lot of eating out.

While we certainly will continue to support local restaurants, this realization helped us plan better around the time on the road and establish a budget for eating out, so more money can be set aside for savings.

Gather your checking, savings and/or credit card statements, utility bills and other expenses to get a true picture of where your money is going each month.

Spread these items out on your kitchen table. This visual will start the process of determining needs versus wants.

Then set out to budget accordingly.

Developing, along with managing, a budget of monthly household expenses is an essential step to put you back in control of your finances. Our home budget calculator, PACU.com/ HomeBudgetCalculator, is an easy-touse tool to help you track expenses and save more.

Manage debt, but don’t be embarrassed to admit you need help.

While your debt payments are part of a household budget, have a separate list of debts, including the name of creditors, total amounts, monthly payments, interest rates, and due dates. Use your credit report to confirm the debts on the list.

Having this list front and center allows you to form a bigger picture and will help you to recognize sooner, rather than later, that you may need help.

If you find it hard to pay on your debt, along with other essential bills each month, don’t be embarrassed to seek help. Debt management options, such as debt consolidation, especially with multiple credit cards, are available. While your financial institution is your first line of defense in developing a plan to get your finances back in your control, you can start with our debt consolidation calculator, PACU.com/DebtConsolidationCalculator, to help decide if debt consolidation is a reasonable solution.

The Federal Trade Commission reported that individuals across the nation had lost more than $211 million to COVID-19 scams and stimulus payment fraud. The Better Business Bureau’s Scam Tracker reports 1,477 COVID-related scams have been filed nationwide. With the recent distribution of $900 billion in relief money, the region’s BBB warns of a surge of scams. Therefore, beware of unsolicited calls or e-mails that ask you to verify or provide financial information.

Take a deep breath.

Don’t dwell on the past. Don’t be overwhelmed by your goals. Budgets require flexibility, and that’s where building and replenishing your rainy-day fund can help. Please know that you are not alone. Mirrors and Windows at REDEEMER school For

25 years behind us and many more to come, Redeemer School has cultivated a rich, literature-based curriculum—founded in our faith in Christ and inspired by the principles of Charlotte Mason—for Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade. Our teachers spread a broad feast of learning in front of every student, providing a varied array of subjects and ideas to form new learning and to make new connections across subjects. As we endeavor to this high calling of teaching the next generation, we do so with the view from the Bible (Genesis 1:26 and 5:1) that each child is born as an image-bearer of the living God. We believe each child, as an earthly reflection of the Lord, brings to their learning the ability to think, to create, to solve problems, to love, and to learn to exercise wisdom, justice, and mercy as they mature.

Charlotte Mason’s curricular emphasis invites students to develop authentic, personal relationships with God, others, and the world around us. It is this second category— with others—that Redeemer School has examined closely in recent years. In the spirit of continuously improving, we reviewed our curriculum—with a particular focus on history, poetry, and artist and composer studies—in light of two important questions: 1) “Are we ensuring that our historical studies are based upon learning from our eternal Creator and Author of history?”, and 2) “Are we incorporating all of God’s image-bearers in meaningful and purposeful ways that include a variety of perspectives?”

A fellow Charlotte Mason educator and writer, Amber O’Neal Johnston, beautifully articulates this second question’s intention as providing “mirrors and windows” for children. She says, “Books as mirrors are books that children can see themselves reflected in. As they’re reading, they will recognize parts of that book and be able to say, ‘Oh, I know about that. I have that, I dream that, I’ve heard that. My family lives this way.’ Then also, books as windows.

In such situations, they’ll look through the book, and they’ll say, ‘Wow, I can see another world. I can see the way people, who maybe have similarities but are different than me in other ways—I can see how they live,’ and most importantly, ‘I can see their humanity.’” (www. heritagemom.com; quoted with permission) Our review of what “mirrors and windows” we were already offering— from art to history to hands-on learning—gave us much to celebrate!

We observed teachers of all grades encouraging a love of God, love for creation, and love for others, and explicit and implicit reminders of the Lord’s sovereignty through all of life and in our historical studies. Increasing in developmental depth and breadth from K through 8th grade, we noted studies of different cultures around the world; famous leaders and heroes; local history; Native American history in North Carolina and beyond; ancient civilizations, including Egyptian, Greek, Mayan, and Incan; European history from the Middle Ages to the Age of Exploration; and an honoring and honest study of American history from the founding of the nation through the Civil Rights movement.

Drawing on a rich literary foundation, we enhanced what was already established and made connections to new mirrors and windows. Some of these included additional Native-American, Latino, and AfricanAmerican leaders, perspectives, and stories throughout different places and periods in American history; we expanded resources about the Civil Rights movement in our local/regional history; and developed new studies on ancient African civilizations, including Mali, Ghana, and Songhai. Artists, composers, and poets, such as Effie Lee Newsome, Clara Schumann, Scott Joplin, Frida Kahlo, and Romare Bearden, were also added to complement and further enhance these enrichment studies. With an average of 1,000+ books for reading in each classroom library, we also expanded these selections across all grades to cover wide and diverse topics and perspectives and reflect all image-bearers.

Our staff enjoys engaging in this continuous improvement process, and we are already seeing the blessings of blending these old and new mirrors and windows! Most importantly, through our review of all grades, Redeemer School’s emphasis remains clear that the Lord is the Creator and Author of both Scripture and history. We give Him all the praise as all image-bearers in our school community continue to learn more deeply from the past, connect this knowledge of our shared humanity and need for salvation to the present, and hope for the future.

A Birth Story to Remember

“unexpected” with the arrival of the “expected” began to take place. Newborn matching hat and swaddle set, check. Snacks, check.

Toiletries, check. Testing positive for Covid, check.

Anxious to meet their baby girl, never did Jon Eric and Jordan Johnson expect to be parting ways just 24 hours prior to Jordan going into labor. Jon Eric had tested positive for the coronavirus after experiencing mild COVID-19 symptoms that week. He recalled being in “pure disbelief, because [he] had talked [himself] into being sure it was just bronchitis.” Nonetheless, Jordan was just as much in shock as she was adjusting to sudden changes in their birth plan, and more disheartened with the simple fact that Jon Eric would miss the birth of their firstborn as he took precautions to keep the baby safe. Already passing the nine months mark and only one single day before she was scheduled to deliver their baby girl, Jordan remembers being “ so close to not having any hiccups during [her] pregnancy.”

Heartbroken and confused, Jon Eric kept reminding himself that “Ten days was just a drop in the bucket compared to how much time [he] would get to be with [his daughter] the rest of [his] life.” A life full of

memories was waiting on the horizon, he just needed to “take it day-by-day until they came home.”

Scheduled to be induced at The Birth Center at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Wednesday, October 21st, Jordan bravely walked in the doors, with her supportive mother at her side ready to welcome this precious new human into the world. With the nurses and doctors using facetime to keep Jon Eric informed on the birth, Jordan delivered a beautifully healthy baby girl, Olivia, at 1:11 pm. While Jordan wishes her husband could have been there in person, she’s still “forever grateful that [her] nurses and other staff worked so hard to include him in every step and most importantly, thankful that Olivia is healthy.”

Despite the good intents of Jon Eric staying home to keep his family safe, COVID-19 had other plans. While both Jordan and her mother, Amy Hammett, tested negative for COVID-19 on the day of delivery, Jordan did end up testing positive only two days after Olivia’s birth. Similar to Jon Eric, Jordan only experienced mild symptoms which allowed her to continue to care for Olivia. For extra safety precautions, Jon Eric and Jordan altered their birth plans again to isolate the girls for the following ten days in the basement of Jordan’s mom, Amy. That Friday evening, as Jordan packed her bags to head to her mother’s house, Jon Eric eagerly awaited their arrival in the driveway.

Remaining at a safe distance, he was able to admire his little girl as Jordan and Amy carefully cradled up Olivia from the car and brought her home. After settling, Jordan pulled her rocking chair up to a glass door for Jon Eric to catch a glimpse. He was wearing his N95 mask for extra safety to meet Olivia for the first time in-person. As Jordan held her tiny angel on the other side of the glass door, Jon Eric was filled with an “odd mixture of joy and sorrow,” as he was finally getting to “see her in person, but not getting to hold her and be close to her.”

Over the next few days, Jordan and Amy consistently wore N95 masks to ensure the newborn was never exposed to the virus, other than the times they ate, showered, and brushed their teeth, which never occurred in the presence of Olivia. Thankfully, Olivia and Amy never tested positive for COVID-19.

After all safety precautions were taken and

their ten days were up, Jordan, Olivia, and Jon Eric were finally reunited together as a family. Looking back, Jon Eric and Jordan note their biggest blessing came true despite the challenges, - a happy, healthy baby who never had to leave mother’s side.

“God was looking out for us,” they said.

While they continued to adapt with the unforeseen events, Jon Eric and Jordan couldn’t be more grateful for Amy Hammett, Jordan’s mom, who not only accompanied Jordan to the hospital, but was by her side in Jon Eric’s place, keeping him well-informed and connected along the way. Going above and beyond, as she volunteered to quarantine with Jordan and Olivia in her basement while her husband isolated upstairs. In addition, Amy selfquarantined for an additional 14 days for extra safety, as Jordan was tested positive. “I don’t know if I would have made it through this without her,” said Jon Eric. “Knowing she was taking care of my girls while I couldn’t be there was my greatest sense of comfort.” In addition, many great friends and family would visit at the glass door and bring food to both Jon Eric and the ladies who isolated at Amy’s house. “I can’t tell you how much we appreciate their help and support, along with all the doctors and hospital staff who did a great job keeping everyone safe.”

As Jordan says, they’ll “definitely have an interesting birth story to tell her one day!”

FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early)

If you aren’t a podcast listener, chances are your best friend listens to a few.

In 2006, only 22% of the adult U.S. population was aware of podcasts.

Today, that number is at least 75%, according to consumer data resource Statista. It’s projected that there will be more than 160 million listeners in 2023.

NPR is one of the leading publishers of podcasts, and iHeartRadio, which filed for bankruptcy in 2018, came out of bankruptcy in 2019 with revenue of $3.68 billion, much of it attributable to digital and podcasting income.

Financial Independence: The Mad Fientist interviews personal finance experts to discover their secrets for achieving financial independence so they can retire early. While the podcasts are infrequent, he provides updates on his own retirement – at age 34 – and details his challenges and lessons.

Money basics Planet Money: Three times a week, the NPR podcast explores all corners of the economy – including an interesting and amusing show on buying and selling Christmas trees.

The Dave Ramsey Show: Dave Ramsey got his start on a Nashville radio station in 1992. Today, Ramsey is on more than 500 radio stations, and his podcast is one of the most popular on Apple. The show is straight talk about life, money, debt, investing, retirement, insurance and investing.

So Money with Farnoosh Torabi: Farnoosh Torabi is a financial strategist, TV journalist and author. Torabi started So Money in 2015. She interviews a wide range of experts, bloggers, authors and everyday people – and all have an interesting money story.

Teen Dating Violence

love is often looked at through naïve, “rosetinted lenses.” Often dismissed as “puppy love,” at times, these young relationships are not taken very seriously by adults. However, they need to be. According to the website, loveisrespect.org, “One in three teens will experience physical, sexual or emotional abuse from a partner.” The website, which advocates for teens and adults to be informed on how to prevent teen dating violence, also reports that “nearly half (43%) of college women report experiencing violent or abusive dating behaviors.”

February is “Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month,” and focuses on helping to educate one and all on this disturbing trend. Just as former President Barack Obama urged the nation in his Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month Proclamation, all adults need to take a “stand against dating violence when we see it.”

The impact of dating violence among young adults is severe.

According to the website, youth.org, “Nationwide, youth age 12 to 19 experience the highest rates of rape and sexual assault.” Countless studies have been undertaken, showing that “approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner during the previous year.” While girls are particularly vulnerable to experiencing violence, this does not exclude boys from also falling victim.

The consequences of teen dating violence are equally disturbing, and include suicide attempts, eating disorders, and drug use. Sadly, adolescents in abusive relationships often carry patterns of violence into their future relationships.

Not surprising, children who are victimized or witness violence frequently will bring their experiences into their own teen relationships.

How can adults help teens navigate through their tumultuous teen years and avoid entering violent relationships? Join the month-long initiative this February by first learning the warning

signs that a teen may be involved in an abusive relationship.

This is truly the only way to stop the problem before it starts.

WARNING SIGN #1: Constantly checking cell phone for significant other messages. While teens will be on their phones a lot to communicate with others, if it seems that your teen is constantly anxious about messages from their boyfriend/ girlfriend, you may want to take a closer look. One of the first ways abuses can start is through social media. Especially, when their significant other is always checking in with them. As a parent, make sure you’re monitoring, so if there is a problem, you can get ahead of it.

WARNING SIGN #2: Isolation from family and friends. This is another tell-tale sign that something is amiss. This can start subtly, such as a dating partner telling the other what activities are okay to join, but then it can lead to more serious situations.

Such as telling a dating partner to quit activities because the only thing that should matter is their relationship.

WARNING SIGN #3: Constant mood swings. If you notice that your teen is constantly up and down, you may want to check in and see how their relationship is going. Often those in unhealthy relationships are feeling insecure. This said, they may lash out at their loved ones. Just as the old saying goes, “we often hurt those we love the most.”

WARNING SIGN #4: Significant other has an explosive temper. If you notice that your loved one has any types of bruises or marks from their “partner,” obviously this is enough to report. When a teen is in an abusive relationship, they may justify their significant other’s temper. They may even go so far as to suggest it was their fault and that they deserved it. This is not okay and is another type of abuse.

WARNING SIGN #5: Feeling pressured to do sexual acts. Abuse comes in various forms, from emotional to social to physical to sexual. If a teen you know is having to act out in sexual ways they do not want to, this is abuse. Simply said. And just like any other type of abuse, this should absolutely be handled.

HEARTFULLY HANDMADE HOLIDAY CARDS Opt for thicker paper, matte or glossy, like card stock, for your heartfully handmade greeting cards. Cut out construction paper hearts, glue them over a doily, and add Valentine’s-y stickers. Want to incorporate candy hearts? Use a glue gun to adhere heart candies with heartful messages. For the recipe, whisk together 2/3 cup dry nonfat or whole milk powder, 1/3 cup powdered sugar, 1/3 cup cocoa powder, 1/3 cup white chocolate chips (or finely chopped), and a pinch of salt. Working in batches, pulse the ingredients in a food processor until finely ground. Add mini-marshmallows for a little extra sweetness.

To help patients feel at ease, the Forsyth Family Dental staff likes to get to know patients to help make them feel like family. However, if patients are still anxious, a mild anti-anxiety medication can be prescribed, or nitrous oxide can be used to calm peoples’ nerves.

DENTAL CARE FOR CHILDREN For young family members, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends being seen by age one for an initial exam. This is generally a “Happy Visit,” where the child is introduced to the dental environment, and the parents are instructed on the proper oral care of their child.

“Although this is the recommendation, we at Forsyth Family Dental do not see children until the age of three or four, purely because we feel it’s the role of the pediatric dentists to see very young children,” Dr. Broughton explained. “We see many children, but there are times when a pediatric dentist is needed to complete treatment on more anxious children, or children with more complex treatment needs. There are many good pediatric dentists in the Winston-Salem area, and we’re always happy to make a recommendation.”

“And studies show that when used properly, a manual toothbrush can be just as effective as an electric toothbrush,” she added. “You do not have to purchase the most expensive electric brush, but you want to make sure it is one that is approved by the American Dental Association.”

PANDEMIC PROTOCOL In terms of COVID-19 precautions, dental offices already were performing many of the protocols that are now recommended. “We also have added another layer of coverage in our personal protective equipment as well as extra sanitization throughout the day,” Dr. Broughton disclosed.

Dr. Broughton said that additional safety measures that Forsyth Family Dental has implemented include prescreening every patient, installing plexiglass barriers, adding more air filters, wearing protective face shields and jackets, and limiting the number of people in the waiting room.

“Patients have been very receptive and appreciative of the guidelines that we have put in place. And they have been very willing to do their part to keep everyone safe,” she emphasized. “Our patients are our family, and we want to be here for them.”

Arrivals, Departures, and the In-Between

I am

a huge animal lover and cannot imagine life without the companionship and comfort of dogs, the precocity of birds, and the surefootedness of turtles.

Last summer, a great-looking tortoise showed up in my natural area. With a mere glimpse of him from my veranda, I was downstairs in a heartbeat to make his acquaintance. Seeming rather disinterested, he remained fairly stationary for a brief photo shoot. I named him “Chester” and invited him to stay. We carried him over to a pile of rocks, added a pan of water and, much as a motivated realtor would, encouraged him to survey the habitat in the hopes that he would find it appealing. Apparently, he did not. Or maybe he simply had other plans?

Shortly thereafter, I opened my front door to find a gray beauty hanging out. He meowed in an animated, feline version of ringing the doorbell. I named him “Slate.” Over the next 48 hours, this persistent, talkative fellow took up residence on my porch, on my lawn and in my bushes. He peered into every accessible door and window, impatiently awaiting an invite.

While my love for him was immediate, I knew we could not keep him. I posted on our neighborhood site, to no avail. My awesome-beyond-words neighbor brought over cat food (the good stuff, no less). I gave him milk and water and then settled in to see what was next. Unlike Chester, Slate needed no sales pitch to find my digs to his liking. He then disappeared as quickly as he had appeared. Perhaps he realized that he’d never be invited over the threshold?

How is it that our hearts take that unconditional leap of faith with animals, anyway? These “arrivals” were blissful. And while their tenure was short, my “heart leap” was deep.

It made me wonder if these two experiences had prepared me for yet another arrival and departure.

It was early morning when I opened the screen door to water my late summer plantings. I immediately heard a thrashing in the early fall leaves.

Looking to my right, I saw it—a house finch with what appeared to be a broken neck. I slowly approached as my mind raced—what can I do, is there someone I can call? I watched as he took his last breath and then settled into the unmistakable stillness of death. I paused with the bone-deep awareness that was nothing I could do. I didn’t know how he was injured, and for a moment, felt guilty that my startling him had hastened his inevitable demise.

And that’s when it hit me. That bird ate from my feeder, drank from my birdbath and likely had a nest tucked ever-so-carefully on my house. I had provided the invite, the welcome, my form of love.

I had “done right” by this little bird.

Collecting myself in the chill of our first fall-like day, I picked up my trowel, a makeshift gurney.

I looked at the still life that was this bird and placed him on the ground. I walked over to an old, worn cross I had picked up at an estate sale that summer, dug a small hole beside it, and placed the little bird there. Then I thanked him for bringing his own special life to this place I call “my” home and wished him everlasting peace.

Birth followed inevitably by death. Arrivals eventually followed by departures. While these are happy and sad bookends, all that matters is what lies between them. All that matters is what we do in the in-between.

Presents Storing Long Term Food Items

Embedded in our minds is the worrisome mantra, “what if” that spans topics from safety and financial security to the health of loved ones, pets and self.

Pondering “What can I do?” leads to a proactive decision to invest time in the ultimate insurance policy – valuable life skills comprising security, shelter, food, water and medical care! In any emergency from extreme weather to a personal disaster, you have the power to take charge of your fate by making plans and taking action!

Humans have a fond connection to items of comfort. On the top of the list is food, following a lengthy list of items defined by a feeling of wellbeing or consolation. Perhaps the recipe has an association to childhood or Mom’s home cooking, or containing chocolate or high sugar! As needs arise, the first step is to open pantry and cupboard doors and start extracting frequently used ingredients. Did you ever think about how often you open containers of sugar, flour, baking soda and salt? Rather than continue to purchase small bags, why not invest in bulk and start a longterm storage pantry?

Reaching Maximum Shelf Life Almost every container, whether plastic, papered or boxed, is not meant for sustainability. Bread wrapped in plastic bags eventually leads to mold if not eaten quickly. The solution is to change the food’s environment to ensure prolonged and stable shelf-life. Dry pasta left in its original packaging will last up to two years. Add eight years if vacuum sealed, and kept at a stable temperature of 70 degrees. While you can reseal bags, consider Mason jars and reuse the lid.

• With a hand-held, battery-powered sealer for regular and wide-mouth jars, consider having on-hand frequently used items, such as coffee, bulkloose teas, rice, beans, dehydrated soups, bouillon powder and salt. Just grab a quart jar and use until emptied!

TIP: Place a paper towel over powdered contents, such as pancake, biscuit and muffin mixes, ensuring particles do not compact hoses and corrupt the device.

FACT: Hard candies like lollipops and Jolly Ranchers have an indefinite shelf life. Peppermint candies last five years! Love dark chocolate? When stored in an airtight container and placed in a cool, dark place, it can last up to three years.

Calcium, Vitamin C and Electrolytes Bottled water is a must-have when creating a list of essential items. Don’t forget other types of liquids, which add to overall health and nutrition.

•C anned seltzer water lasts indefinitely and improves acid reflux and constipation.

•U nopened canned, powdered milk can last well beyond the “best by” date, approximately a decade, and is a good substitute for calcium.

• Tang provides calcium and vitamin C while boosting energy levels.

FACT: Dehydrated or freeze-dried foods may store for 20 to 25 years.

Buckets and Bags Most buckets come with a difficult to pry open, snappable lid. The next best option is a Gamma lid, transforming a container into a resealable, airtight and leak-proof storage unit. Calling All Sweet Potato Lovers!

North Carolina’s official vegetable, the beloved sweet potato, this upcoming February by learning more about this nutritious and delicious crop, as well as a few quick and easy recipes. Think you know all there is to know about this delicious veggie? Read on for a few new facts.

The sweet potato is naturally high in fiber, making it important to leave the skin on.

Another interesting fact about this crop is that sweet potatoes are roots, unlike regular potatoes which are underground stems.

Many enjoy this crop because sweet potatoes can be eaten in many ways, including baked, steamed, boiled, mashed, microwaved, fried, pureed, raw or juiced. Not only are these vegetables delicious, they are also nutritious.

They are high in beta-carotene, vitamins E and C, iron, potassium and vitamin B-6. Since the sweet potato is NC’s favorite vegetable, our state is the leading sweet potato producer in the United States. If all these facts have you now craving a dish featuring our state’s favorite veggie, why not learn a few new sweet potato recipes? Read on for three quick and easy recipes featuring our beloved crop!

Classic Sweet Potato Casserole A Thanksgiving staple for many, the sweet potato casserole is surely a dish that all can enjoy year-round. Try this one for a twist on the classic casserole.

INGREDIENTS: 4 cups sweet potatoes (cubed); ½ cup of sugar; 2 eggs, beaten; ½ teaspoon salt; 7 Tablespoons butter; ½ cup milk; ½ teaspoon vanilla extract; ½ cup brown sugar; 1/3 cup all-purpose flour; ½ cup chopped pecans.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Put sweet potatoes in a medium saucepan with water to cover. Cook over medium high heat until tender; drain and mash.

In a large bowl, mix the sweet potatoes, white sugar, eggs, salt, butter, milk and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Transfer to a 9”x13” baking dish.

In medium bowl, mix the brown sugar and flour. Cut in the butter until the mixture is coarse. Stir in the pecans. Sprinkle the mixture over the sweet potato mixture.

Bake in the preheated oven 30 minutes, or until the topping is lightly brown.

Sweet Potato Lasagna Try this twist on the classic lasagna recipe.

Not only will you enjoy the new flavor, it will also cut those calories you usually have with regular lasagna in half!

INGREDIENTS: Cooking spray; 3 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced 1/8”-thick (about 2 lb.); 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil; I large onion, chopped; 2 cloves garlic, minced; I lb. sweet Italian sausage, casings removed; Kosher salt; freshly ground black pepper; 2 c. marinara; I (5 oz.) package baby spinach; 16 oz. ricotta; 1 large egg, beaten; ¾ c. freshly grated Parmesan, divided; 1 tsp. dried oregano; 1½ C. shredded mozzarella; freshly chopped parsley, for garnish.

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 375° and grease a 9”x13” baking pan with cooking spray. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and cook until soft, 5 minutes then add garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute more. Add sausage and cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, about 6 minutes.

Season with salt and pepper.

Pour in marinara sauce and bring to a simmer. Cook until sauce thickens slightly, 5 minutes. Add spinach and cook until spinach is wilted. Remove from heat.

Spread a thin layer of marinara mixture evenly across the bottom of prepared dish. Layer sweet potatoes on top of sauce, slightly overlapping. Spread about 1 /3 of ricotta mixture over sweet potatoes, then pour 1/3 of remaining meat sauce on top. Repeat to make two more layers. Top lasagna with mozzarella and remaining ¼ cup Parmesan.

Cover with aluminum foil and bake until sweet potatoes are almost cooked through, about 45 minutes, then remove foil and bake until sweet potatoes are forktender and cheese is lightly golden, 15 minutes more.

Garnish with parsley and let sit to cool.

Sweet Potato Chili Warm up on those cold February days with this delicious chili recipe!

INGREDIENTS: 2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil; 1 medium onion, chopped; 1 bell pepper, chopped; 3 cloves garlic, minced; 1 Tbsp. tomato paste; 1 lb. Italian sausage; 1 Tbsp. chili powder; 1 tsp. dried oregano; ½ tsp. garlic powder; ¼ tsp. cayenne; Kosher salt; freshly ground black pepper; 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed into 1” pieces; 3 c. low-sodium chicken broth; 1(14.5-oz.) can diced tomatoes; freshly chopped parsley, for garnish DIRECTIONS: Heat oil in a large pot over medium heat.

Add onion and bell pepper and cook until soft, 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 minute more, then add tomato paste and stir until well coated. Add sausage and cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon until no longer pink, 7 minutes. Add chili powder, oregano, garlic powder, and cayenne. Season with salt and pepper.

Add sweet potatoes, broth, and tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer, covered, until sweet potatoes are tender, about 15 minutes.

Garnish with parsley before serving.

Six seconds releases the maximum levels of oxytocin and serotonin—the best type of feelgood hormones. Science can measure the biochemical changes derived from the brain. In the need for physical touch to lower anxiety and stress, we cuddle, hold hands, and accept companionship from family, friends, and pets. Love truly is empowering, for one moment to many years. In the expanding list of objects, places, and living creatures, each of us can connect with something that our hearts define unconditionally as love.

Most of us can define their perception of why we have a romantic attraction and constant affection. Needless to say, the answer continues to be a work in progress, and perhaps for you, too!

February is American Heart Month! Last month when we turned that calendar and finally said “good riddance” to 2020, many of us made some resolutions to make healthy changes to lower our risk of developing heart disease.

Some of those changes may have included: • Losing weight • Quitting smoking and staying away from secondhand smoke • Controlling cholesterol and blood pressure • Limiting alcohol consumption or being more mindful about moderation • Get active and eating healthy Controlling and preventing the above risk factors is important for mitigating heart disease, but did you know that limiting stress can also reduce the risk of heart disease?

According to the American Heart Association, more than 1 in 3 women has a form of cardiovascular disease. And heart disease is the leading cause of hospital stays for men in the United States. Due to the prevalence of the disease, the AHA recognizes each February as American Heart Month in hopes of raising awareness about the disease and how to prevent it.

Stress and Heart Health

While there are risk factors that contribute to heart disease that you can’t control, reducing stress is one thing that you can help control.

When stress is excessive, it can contribute to a host of health problems, including high blood pressure. If high blood pressure goes untreated, it can result in heart disease.

When watching these videos, keep in mind that it may be helpful to envision stress reduction and finding calm with two distinct layers or components. Think of it as giving more space to the “ceiling” of your blowup/breakdown point. The idea is to stay in a more balanced range on the stress meter before letting it creep too high.

One layer involves general self-care and things you can incorporate into daily life.

You can work these in anywhere and at any time — whether you are stressed at that moment or not.

Secondly, there are what we refer to as “inthe-moment” techniques that can reduce movement up the stress meter when you are in a traffic jam, or you’ve received one of those emails that get you worked up, or you’ve just learned you or a loved one have potentially been exposed to COVID. In-the-moment techniques simply involve using the techniques when you need them most.

TOGETHER, these two can complement each other. Daily stress management habits give you a better starting place, and then, in-the-moment techniques help you stray less from that point, maintaining better balance.

When you don’t have either of these layers, you reach your upper-stress zone more quickly. If you have only one or the other, it also helps, but not as much.

When to Seek Help If the stresses in your life become more than you can bear or manage with these simple techniques, consider seeking professional assistance. A knowledgeable professional will be able to work with you to devise time management skills and stressreducing techniques.

TIPS FOR QUIETING A BUSY MIND

Yes, even the title is a little daunting, isn’t it?

From the point of view of this writer—whose mind is admittedly cluttered with details, deadlines, and countless worries—it’s a skill I know I need to master also: Quieting my mind. I’m fine with the exercise aspect of yoga, for example, but clearing my thoughts for a calmer presence is another story entirely.

Whether you’re setting aside your “me” time before work or later, after a long day, it’s hard not to keep going over your to-do list in your mind, thinking ahead to what’s for dinner that night, or even zeroing in on a little pain here and there while you’re bending and stretching. Happily, there are tips to head you in the right direction, whether you’re new to yoga and meditation or simply scheduling a much-needed “relaxation break” with yourself during a day of occupational madness!

• Put your phone down at least a half-hour before a yoga class. Sure, it sounds simple, but down means literally nowhere within reach!

• Spend a few minutes outside in nature to clear your mind and reduce your anxiety level. Consider a short walk before beginning a class or take a seat outside somewhere after work to start fresh again.

• Listen to calming music on the drive from work to your next destination. (Hint: humming along can also be self soothing!)

• Visualize what you’re trying to achieve: If you’re aiming for that sense of calm and relaxation you might only experience at the beach, close your eyes and picture the ocean. Or, simply close your eyes and pay attention to what you see (we bet you won’t see just a black space!)

• Reset your breathing. If your concentration is waning, first pay attention to the pace of your breathing. Try this easy breathing pattern to start: Breath in through your nose for four seconds, hold the breath for three seconds, then release the breath through your mouth for another four seconds.

• Focus on the quiet and calm of the space you plan to exercise or meditate in. Look around for a focal point to center your thoughts.

• If you’ve come from a negative situation at work, take a few minutes to count your blessings—out loud. You’ll instantly feel calmer!

• Develop a list of “peaceful” words to repeat to yourself throughout the process—thoughts that will pull you back to a more relaxed state.

Practicing both yoga and meditation can totally change the way your body reacts to stress, and although it can be a challenge to let yourself “rest,” doing nothing can be amazingly good for the soul!

But it takes time—and practice—so, above all, be gentle with yourself, and don’t expect perfection right away. Don’t fight your active mind so much that you contradict its amazing abilities—but learn to balance the ebb and flow of your thoughts with a goal of restoring and energizing both your body and soul!

Harmless Cleaning Agents and Eco-Safe Formulas

coercive power of commercials led you to try several cleaning products, designed for one part of your home. Since not all formulas lived up to their promises, the outcome resulted in dozens of unused, high-priced bottles cluttering kitchen, bathroom and laundry shelves.

Something new does not deter from the ol’ standard of products you can rely on and costs pennies to make! Combining water with one other ingredient, you’ll likely create a quality cleanser that offers a smile of satisfaction every time!

BAKING SODA: Sodium bicarbonate is a wondrous powder more abrasive than soap to dislodge particles and remove stains from fabrics and fruits to kitchen surfaces. Simply sprinkle baking soda on an area in which you wish to clean, wet a sponge and start scrubbing! As most odors are acidic, the powder neutralizes to absorb and produce a clean scent.

• Sprinkle baking soda over dirty dishes, allow to sit; then, wash.

• Revitalize kitchen sponges by soaking them in baking soda and water.

• Odorous areas, such as litter boxes, carpets, mattresses, upholstery and laundry will benefit from any number of responses, from stain removals to brightening fabrics.

• Combining vinegar and baking soda will unclog a drain and remove grease from ovens.

BORAX: The mineral includes sodium’s borate and tetraborate, and a salt of boric acid.

As a soft white crystal, it requires water to dissolve. Just mix two tablespoons of borax with one quart of hot water, and the result is an all-purpose cleaner. With greater concentrations of borax, you can have the means to clean mold and mildew or wash floors.

• As a rust remover, combine borax, warm water and lemon juice into a paste; then, apply!

• Borax, warm water and dish soap combined in a spray bottle can spot clean outdoor furniture!

• If urine odors cause you problems, dampen the area first with water, then rub with borax, and allow to dry. A vacuum cleaner will remove the residue.

•S ave money on laundry detergents by mixing equal portions of borax, washing soda and soap flakes. Add distilled, white vinegar to each load!

CORN STARCH: In the far corner of your kitchen cupboard lies a low-cost, miracle product extracted from corn! Sprinkling on carpets and fabrics, from smelly shoes to stained clothing, will remove stains. Grease stains require time, roughly 10 hours, for complete absorption.

•M ixing one-part water with two parts cornstarch offers a non-abrasive scrubbing cleaner, applied to bathrooms and kitchen surfaces, pots and pans!

LEMON: If you adore lemon-scented products, start using the juice for your cleaning needs.

•S queeze the juice of half a lemon onto countertops or cutting boards; then, use the lemon to scrub away stains. Rinse with water and dry!

• Tired of stains on Tupperware? Squeeze lemon juice into a container; then, sprinkle baking soda and allow to sit overnight before scrubbing.

•S prinkle salt onto a lemon half and apply to clean tarnished brass or copper!

MINERAL OIL: Think of all the ways you require a means to protect the wood, prevent rust or remove stains. The answer is mineral oil!

•R ub the oil over cutting boards to prevent bacteria from lodging into crevices!

•D ab onto stains an effective prewashing strategy.

• Quick application to stop squeaky doors!

• Apply to folding chairs to prevent rust!

SALT: According to the Salt Institute, the natural mineral extends to 14,000 uses! It serves as an effective, gentle scouring agent while boosting cleaning and deodorizing.

• Pouring salt and hot water down the kitchen sink regularly deodorizes and prevents grease build-up.

• A pinch of salt cleans cast-iron!

• Need a solution for coffee stains?

Combine salt with a dab of dish soap and scrub!

• Swirl an ice cube and salt in a coffee pot for easy washing!

• Worried about the excess suds in your laundry or preventing freezing if linedrying outdoors? Add salt!

DISTILLED WHITE VINEGAR: Well-known for its natural, non-toxic cleaning abilities, it slices through grime and kills bacteria! Just use equal parts water to white vinegar to clean kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

• Pour directly onto cutting boards to disinfect.

• Place the showerhead into a plastic bag, and allow it to rest overnight in white vinegar! Make sure it’s submerged!

• Use vinegar in your laundry to protect colors from fading while promoting an added softness to fabrics.

• Combine equal parts of water to vinegar solution to keep glass surfaces sparkling!

Creating a Generation of Readers

Kennedy once said, “There are many little ways to enlarge a child’s world. Love of books is the best of all.” Books provide a wide variety of treasures for people of all ages, especially children. Stories take young readers on journeys, adventures, help them learn lessons or discover other worlds. The value of a novel and what it gives a child can never be truly measured.

But, one of the main questions regarding books remains the same: how does a child become an active reader if they don’t like to read? The answer is easy and simple.

One of the most influential things a parent or guardian can do is to engage the child, starting when they are an infant. A great way to spend quality time together is when a parent reads to their newborn.

Picture books with vivid illustrations can capture a baby’s attention, and stimulate their social development and thinking skills. Interactive picture books are also beneficial to older infants and toddlers.

Some will encourage the child to look, point, or touch certain elements. Lastly, these types of books build vocabulary and word recognition. A baby will learn to identify images, sounds, and new words through their parent’s voice and interaction. Don’t be afraid to reread a book multiple times, either.

to match any child’s interests. Parents and children can take turns reading aloud sentences, pages, or chapters. Reading aloud can help a parent determine their child’s reading level and comprehension.

After finishing the selection, spend some time discussing what you have read, what might come next in the plot, and your opinions on the novel. As much as you can make a child an active participant in the reading, the more likely they will enjoy and remember the process.

Once you have finished a story, go beyond the tale and make it come alive.

Complete activities based on the plot and characters, go on virtual or in-person trips to places that represent the setting, rewrite your own version of the ending, or watch the movie version, if available. For example, within The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne, there is a story titled “Late Lunch with Llamas.” The plot revolves around Jack and Annie in South America, where they are on a quest to rescue a farmer’s stolen baby llama.

Their adventures take them to the top of Machu Picchu and back. Some activities for extending “Late Lunch with Llamas” could include learning more about llamas, South America, and Machu Picchu, making a traditional dish from South America, or visiting a nearby animal park that is home to llamas. Books are more than just words and pictures; they open the door to many other opportunities

to explore. When a child is starting to read, no matter what type of books, it is important to make sure they experience everything the story has to offer.

As a child grows, it can be harder to keep them interested in reading. With tons of distractions around every corner, sitting down and reading a book may not be appealing to a thirteen-year-old. To combat this, a parent can set an example of reading in the home. First, read a book in front of your child, or factor out a time each day/week for the whole family to read in the same room together. This time could be in the afternoon, evening, or on the weekends. Second, celebrate writers and novels. Have conversations on what authors you enjoy reading or the different genre of books you prefer. Make special trips to the library often with your child.

You could also have monthly themes for the various books each family member is reading. These themes can be based on the holidays within the month, such as Earth Day in April. All family members could read an environment-related book.

And finally, create a nook just for books and reading within your home. This area could be used by the whole family or there could be an individual area for each reader. This special space will aid in making a person’s reading experience just a little bit better.

Cultivating a generation of readers starts at home and soon after the child is born.

A person can become a book lover at any age. Using these tips will bolster that love and help maintain it for a child’s entire life.

Brussel sprouts are a cruciferous vegetable that not only makes a delicious side dish but also fuels your body with key nutrients.

Being low in calories, Brussel sprouts are high in minerals, protein, fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K. Especially during these cold months, it’s important to have proper consumption of vitamin C as it helps support immune functions, tissue repair, and iron absorption to fight those viruses. In addition, just a half cup of cooked Brussel sprouts has over 2 grams of fiber which helps to promote a healthy digestive system by feeding the beneficial gut bacteria.

FUN FACT: Did you know that this nutrientdense vegetable really is named after the capital of Belgium? Brussel sprouts were first introduced in Louisiana during the 18th century by French settlers. They became quickly adored as this little vegetable was established as a commercial crop in California by the early 1900s. Today, the U.S.A produces nearly 70 million pounds of Brussel Sprouts every year.

Crispy Baked Garlic & Parmesan Brussel Sprouts Servings: 4 INGREDIENTS: 1 lb. Brussel Sprouts 2 tbsp. Olive Oil 3 Garlic Cloves, crushed 4 tbsp. Parmesan, grated 1/2 tsp. Salt INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 400F. Line a baking pan with parchment paper.

2. Trim and halve the Brussel sprouts. Toss into a large bowl with 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan, olive oil, crushed garlic, and salt.

3. Evenly spread onto the prepared baking pan, then sprinkle with the reserved one tablespoon grated parmesan.

4. Bake for 15 minutes, flip the Brussel sprouts, then bake an additional 10-15 minutes, until crispy. Enjoy warm!

Perhaps you want to start saving money while investing in safer cleaning products, or have an immediate answer to the question, “What’s for dinner?”

There are hundreds of ways to live with a more sustainable home!

The Five R’s We’ve all heard the phrase, “reduce, reuse, and recycle;” yet, did you know there are two additional categories?

One is “refuse” (garbage). It’s a mindset to choose green living, which implies discarding and no longer buying cleaning agents and plastic sponges that are not biodegradable or end up in the landfill.

Begin Composting Yard and food scraps make up 25 to 50% of what we throw away. Just imagine tossing banana and potato peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, newspaper, dog hair, leaves, and grass cuttings into an open or closed bin, which will result in a nutrient and mineral enriched soil. February is Rheumatoid Arthritis Awareness Month

Burning.

Throbbing. Gnawing. Aching pain.

Exhaustion. Pain that is synchronized in the joints. So, if the right knee hurts, so does the left.

We’re talking about rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, for short.

It’s an invisible, autoimmune disease and a form of arthritis that can be developed at any age. A rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis is difficult since the symptoms are similar to other diseases. A doctor may do a blood test to measure the C-reactive protein as an indicator of rheumatoid arthritis, as well as use a visual assessment of joints for swelling, redness and warmth. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the immune system doesn’t work properly and attacks the lining of the joints. Hands, knees and ankles are commonly affected by the disease.

Those who live with rheumatoid arthritis may have good days and bad days; finding the right treatment is often challenging. But, there are some things that those who are living with the disease wish others knew: 1. N ot all arthritis pains are the same. Rheumatoid arthritis isn’t the same as osteoarthritis, which occurs from normal wear and tear on our joints as we get older. It’s not that other forms of arthritis aren’t painful or valid. But, rheumatoid arthritis is considered to be the most disabling form of arthritis.

2. There is not a cure. Any treatment for rheumatoid arthritis is meant to slow the progression of the disease and minimize the side effects and symptoms.

3. R heumatoid arthritis fatigue is a very real thing. Living with chronic pain like rheumatoid arthritis is challenging. Simple tasks like taking a shower, walking the dog and fixing supper may feel overwhelming and add to the physical exhaustion that is a symptom of the disease.

4. N ot all days are created equal. When rheumatoid arthritis hits – it may hit out of nowhere. Some days may be great, and out of nowhere, the symptoms hit like a Mack truck. So, when plans get canceled because of a flare-up – give grace and understanding.

5. U nderstanding is appreciated, but being bombarded with advice is not always helpful. There is a ton of information available about rheumatoid arthritis. Those who have the disease are working with specialists who are addressing their symptoms accordingly. Over-the-counter treatments may work for some kinds of arthritis pain, but rheumatoid arthritis is a different kind of beast.

6. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease. This isn’t a matter of aches and pains. It’s a medically diagnosed disease of the immune system, and to an outsider – it may look like all is fine. But, not all diseases manifest themselves in visible ways.

More than 1.5 million Americans are living with rheumatoid arthritis. Most of them are women, though, as previously stated, rheumatoid arthritis can affect anyone at any age. The long-term effect of the disease can result in disfigured hands and joints.

If you, or someone you know, has any of the following symptoms – you may want to talk to your doctor: • Joints that are tender, warm or swollen • Joints that are stiff in the morning or after any period of inactivity • Fatigue • Fever • Loss of appetite Rheumatoid arthritis tends to show up in fingers and toes first before spreading to other joints – the wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and ankles.

in the Carolinas is a perfect time to curl up with a good book. Especially considering that the COVID-19 pandemic is still requiring us to socially distance and stay home more often. What better way to embrace reading than by celebrating National Library Lover’s month? This February, join book lovers across the country during the month-long celebration of school, public, and private libraries of all types. This is a time for all to recognize the value of libraries and to work to assure that the nation’s libraries will continue to serve.

Every community has a library. This quiet place can be a true refuge for many. They are a quiet place to read, think and learn. Libraries not only house countless books and research opportunities, they also offer other services to the public. For those searching for a new job, the library has numerous job and employment resources. For young adults needing to write a research paper for school, the library can offer databases and subscriptions to help scholars find credible sources for research papers. For those new to our country, local libraries often provide free English classes to help with the naturalization process.

Read on for a few ways to show the love we all have for these institutions.

Consider a Contribution! While libraries always can benefit from financial contributions, this is not the only way one can contribute to this neighborhood treasure. Here are a few ways you can make an impact.

First, you can nominate your library as your community, school, or corporate organization’s project for the year.

Secondly, you can buy your library a subscription to a popular magazine.

Finally, you can give financially to the library through inviting your company to enable a matching program for charitable giving.

Promotion, Promotion, Promotion!

Just like any business, libraries cannot run without financial support. Many people are not aware of the funding problems libraries are experiencing nationally—or in their own communities. With this said, there are a few things that one can do to help.

First, you can attend local government meetings to urge city and county legislators to invest in libraries as a vital community resource. Another thing one can do is urge school and college administrators to make library funding a high priority. Finally, you can speak up for libraries at campus or community groups that you belong to. Such groups can also help get these treasures the funding they rightfully deserve.

Volunteer your time! While, of course, financial contributions will help libraries on many levels; these institutions also greatly need help running their services. One can help by donating time and energy.

What are a few ways to do this?

First, an individual can offer to be a helping hand to a library’s staff. Secondly, you can offer to become a literacy tutor for struggling scholars. Finally, one can volunteer to work in one of their programs, from reading stories to children, to helping with career resources.

In the hilarity of the events from beginning to end, one aspect still resonates. The father-inlaw recommended Windex to cure a developing pimple. The astounding response: “It worked, who knew?” In the moment of difficulty, we have surrendered to the trial of a recommended cure to boost wellness, ease pain, and save money. Some advice worked miraculously, while others failed miserably! Most likely, you occasionally drink cranberry juice to prevent a urinary tract infection, consume a teaspoon of raw honey for allergy relief, and eat chicken noodle soup when sick. It’s a shame many of the traditional home remedies and wives’ tales fell out of favor in the medical community. The lengthy sideeffects of pharmaceuticals confirm that we need a natural solution.

Perhaps, the following list will recall a memory of someone quite special, or instill a need to devour particular fruits, vegetables, herbs, or extractions!

February 7: Celebrating Laura Ingalls Wilder Day

Ingalls Wilder was born on February 7, 1867. She found fame in her later years after writing the Little House on the Prairie books, which chronicled her childhood and early days of marriage on the prairies and wideopen spaces of the American Midwest.

She has charmed generations of readers, as well as viewers who tuned in weekly to watch her stories come to life in the television series based on her stories.

In the 1933 book, Farmer Boy, we meet Laura’s future husband, Almanzo. As the youngest child, Almanzo experiences the growing pains of having to wait for what he most wants: a horse of his very own.

In the last year, there’s been a resurgence of interest in Little House on the Prairie— in large part thanks to Alison Arngrim, who played mean Nellie Oleson on the television series. During the shutdown of 2020, Ms. Arngrim began daily afternoon readings from the book, hosting a Facebook Live storytime each afternoon.

She has delighted both adults and children alike with her fun and engaging readings that were interspersed with stories from the TV show.

In the 1935 book, Little House on the Prairie, Pa decides to move the family from Wisconsin to Kansas, and life takes on a whole new set of challenges.

And along the way, Laura learns that she should never be afraid to discover new things.

3. Don’t be afraid to try something new, or to be open to those who are different from you.

4. Difficult seasons are best navigated with the support of family.

With a renewed interest in the life and adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder, February is a great time to remember her and the lessons she’s taught us. Those lessons include:

In the 1937 book, On the Banks of Plum Creek, the Ingalls family moves to Minnesota when Laura is between the ages of seven and nine. She experiences the challenge of going to school for the first time and natural disasters that include locusts and a blizzard.

In the 1939 book, By the Shores of Silver Lake, the family moves again, this time to South Dakota. By this time, Laura’s sister Mary has gone blind, and the family learns how to navigate the challenges and obstacles that come with such a life-changing ordeal. Also, we

In the 1940 book, The Long Winter, we learn about the winter of 1880, which brings blizzard after blizzard to the South Dakota Territory. The constant storms interrupt train service, which had brought goods and food to the area. Almanzo and a friend make an appearance, bringing wheat to the desolate town, despite the winter storms.

7. Family takes care of family.

In the 1941 book, Little Town on the Prairie, the Ingalls family has worked together to give Mary the opportunity to go to college. In addition to helping fund her older sister’s education, Laura earns her first teaching certificate, and Almanzo begins making regular appearances.

8. Finish what you start, even under difficult circumstances.

In the 1943 book, These Happy Golden Years, 15-year-old Laura is invited to teach her first school class and finds herself in a miserable position. Almanzo comes to her rescue and, week after week, drives 24 miles round trip to take her home on the weekends. At the end of her assignment, Almanzo pursues the relationship in earnest, despite Laura’s initial misgivings about him.

Motivating Elementary Students with an Online Learning Format

Change alters morale, especially in young children who thrive in an environment of rules, a dependable schedule and peer interaction. While parents may feel overwhelmed by remote learning, there are several ways to help your child grow and learn.

Maintaining Routine Remember the hustle and bustle before school? The sound of alarm clocks and the pounding of running feet down staircases?

High-volumed chatter and the whirlwind of actions, hoping to slow time? You can improve the morning experience by asking the kids to set their alarm clocks and come down to breakfast promptly at a set time.

Make decisions on what to serve that will boost excitement to the morning routine.

How about preparing a crockpot oatmeal breakfast or making something simple, such as frozen waffles? Try concluding each week by offering a new family activity, such as making pizza, watching a movie with a bowl of popcorn or playing a board game! Anything is possible to promote a good day!

Eliminate Distraction Working and learning from home presents logistic challenges for families. Business calls and team meetings do not create the ideal environment for a young learner, ready to abandon the desk for a more pleasurable activity – playing.

Children, too, need an appropriate location to engage in live lessons, perhaps with a microphone headset. Lessons may range from 10 to 45 minutes; therefore, make a pact with your child to remain seated during lessons. Implementing classroom rules at home may ease potential wonderings.

Emailing Questions Remote learning offers the necessity for students to pose questions to teachers after school hours. Encourage children to take responsibility for creating an email and using appropriate

words, avoiding slang, to express problems or needs. In the process, they learn how to construct a letter format while forming complete sentences, including a conclusion, signature and punctuation. Grades and Missing Assignments In a technological format, students now have plenty of resources at their fingertips.

The “Power School” website enables students to view grades as well as identify missing assignments. Forgot Mrs. Marshall’s math lesson? Then, access the videoed lesson to gain understanding. Parents can establish times to view grades either daily or weekly, and praise for improvements or openly discuss a plan to tackle time management. If playing occupies the time for completing classwork assignments, perhaps, the solution is to wait until evening. Kids may feel happier with the new arrangement.

Experiment with Assignments Without group learning experiences, children must rely on themselves to complete assignments. The high expectation can lead to emotional frustration from screams to tears.

Parents can assist by offering an alternative approach!

Reluctant readers may enjoy listening to a narrator, whether read-aloud or through an

audiobook. Check out various apps for the cell phone, Kindle or iPad, which may allow a bookmark and the ability to rewind by 10 seconds to one minute.

Schedule a Zoom session with your child’s best friend to talk about an assigned book or assignment. The interaction will instantly cheer up both children and encourage motivation!

Most children achieve success with the help of visual aids; therefore, consider purchasing a magnetic whiteboard. With a variety of colored erasable markers, children can brainstorm writing ideas, learn to recall key vocabulary terms or practice mathematics problems.

Incorporate learning strategies as your child prepares for a test. For spelling words, ask him or her to circle little words within the main word or separate through syllables.

Other methods include creating meaning groups, songs, jingles, retrieval cues (such as mnemonics) or talking out loud.

Transition to Paper and Pencil Keyboarding for an extended period requires healthy breaks to flex the fingers.

Try implementing alternative activities during cold days, such as teaching the life skill of threading a needle and learning the art of embroidery, learning cursive or practicing yoga positions! Engaging the mind in a new focus may lead to enjoyment and contentment!

Monitoring Progress Many parents feel left out of the educational process.

Viewing assignments online is not an easy task, compared to a folder of completed work and tests. Rather than feel discouraged, take a moment to reach out to your child’s teacher to convey your concerns regarding motivation or the reason behind incomplete assignments.

Distance learning cannot provide the whole picture, but parents can explain difficulties and receive wellneeded guidance!

Do you stand straight, peering around occasionally to assess your environment? While it’s not always easy to avoid walking alone, especially at night, you can become part of a vital statistic, involving 50% of women, who want to feel more secure when walking alone day or night!

Walking to a Vehicle We all have some form of alarm bells, a feeling of concern and the need for caution.

In all cases, it’s wise to trust your instincts.

If a security guard or business employee is not available to escort you to your vehicle, use your surroundings. Join a group leaving the building to increase your safety, or walk with purpose, on a well-lit pathway, directly to your destination. Make sure keys are in readiness to unlock the door! After entering your vehicle, do not sit and wait, but lock the doors, and leave immediately.

TIP: Never leave your keys in the ignition, especially at a gas station.

TIP: Of all the essential items to keep in your vehicle, consider a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

The safest purse requires two-steps to enter, perhaps a buckled flap over the zipper, and a shortened strap. Take the time to clean out your purse periodically to ensure only the essential items, including relevant credit cards, are carried. Make sure your wallet lies at the bottom, rather than at the top!

TIP: Do you know what items are in your purse? Keep an up-to-date list of every credit card you carry. Make sure to list the company’s name, number, and account number.

Walking with a Cell Phone With hands-free devices, either corded or wireless, individuals can block out the world’s noise and focus on a conversation, audiobook, or favorite song. Thus, victims do not sense they are about to have their phones plucked from their hands or pockets. Instead of walking and scrolling at the same time, implement the following safety habits.

As a rule, never take acts of safety for granted! Most attackers do not want to be seen; therefore, take the time to turn around and look your follower in the eye; then, cross the street and find a location; perhaps, an open business, where a number of people can assist.

Arriving to a vehicle, do not drive directly home! Report your experience to the police department!

Say No to Uncomfortable Situations

Instinct plays a vital role in safety! Never feel embarrassed in using the word, “No!” Saying it out loud indicates a personal preference and helps individuals avoid distrustful circumstances. If you feel leery, try the following solutions: • Think first of what the consequences may be if you said “Yes.” Pondering what could go wrong is one means to promote safety!

• Create a code word with family members and roommates. It may lead to a vital rescue!

• Find an escape route that allows you to leave without confrontation. Determine if friends can assist and you can leave in a group.

STEMulating Activities for Kids

Within

recent years, technology and science have been on the fast-track. New innovations, medicines, and advances have appeared and influenced our way of life. There has also been a push for engaging children in these fields. One avenue to expose children to these areas is through STEM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, activities. Through STEM, children not only learn more about science and technology, but they develop life skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration. In return, children want to learn more and explore these fields, pursue careers in them, and help maintain our country’s future growth and stability, as we continue to become more technological.

There is no correct age to introduce your child to STEM and you don’t have to start with a big exercise. In fact, your child may already be doing something STEM- related, such as building structures with LEGOS or playing with slime. A common thread with the activities is that they are all hands-on, interactive, and can hold a child’s attention. Looking for a good place to begin? Try these STEM activities at home.

Activities for Kids under Five Young children can still reap the benefits of STEM through everyday actions. Be sure to ask questions and try different ways to conduct these experiments. The more you can explore, the more learning that will take place. For example, by • Creating ramps and buildings with household items and toys; • Water play and seeing what items will float or sink; • Experimenting with shadows and their effects; • Blowing bubbles; • Discovering their own five senses through the Apple Activity. In this experiment, you will need: 5 different varieties of apples, paper plates for each, a knife for cutting, paper

for reflections, and a marker. Place each apple on a paper plate and label the plate with its type. Let your child observe each apple’s differences with their five senses. What does it look like (color and shape)? What does it smell like? What does it feel like? Have them make notes on their senses on the paper. Then, cut the apples into slices and give your kid another opportunity to analyze the apple slices with his or her five senses, this time adding in the sense of taste. What does the apple taste like? Does it crunch? These simple questions can lead into big observations and developmental skills.

MATERIALS: 1 Cup milk 4 Teaspoons white vinegar Bowl Stove or microwave Strainer Paper towels A Spoon Molds for shaping DIRECTIONS: 1. In a pot, heat the milk on the stove or in a microwave until it starts steaming.

Remove from heat.

2. Pour the white vinegar into the milk and mix together, stirring gently for about one minute. The milk will begin to curdle.

STEM is all around us. It is something that can be easily added to each day and can have an immense impact on children.

Many ideas are out there as to how you can include STEM in your family’s routine.

Don’t be afraid to research, investigate, and experiment with your child. Not only will skills and lessons be learned, but memories will also be made.

Footprints in the Snow

is a fairly wellknown poem that you may have heard of called, “Footprints in the Sand.” It involves someone looking back on his life with the Lord and seeing the past represented by two sets of footprints on a beach.

The man notices that during some of his most difficult times, there is only one set of footprints.

Confused, the man asks God, “Why did you leave my side during my most trying times?” Lovingly, God reminds the man that he never left his side.

Instead, the times when there was only one set of footprints were the times that God picked the man up and carried him.

Even as a 47-year-old man, I’m not ashamed to admit that I have needed to be carried by others in my life. At seven years old, I had just been through a very confusing time. Having been raised in a loving environment by my grandparents for six years, then being betrayed by my parents in an abusive eight-month relationship, I found myself desperately needing a strong father figure. My adopted father stepped up and filled that role in my life when I needed it most.

Having spent the first six years of my life in upstate New York, I had an affinity for snow. My adopted parents lived in a quaint home nestled in the mountains of western Virginia. The house was surrounded by thousands of acres of National Forest.

Throughout those woods were miles of trails—trails that in the summer served as my bike paths. In the winter months, those same trails were transformed into the paths one might find in the magical land of Narnia. Our location and elevation provided the perfect ingredients for snowstorms when they tracked up the spine of the Appalachian Mountains.

Occasionally, the timing of my new father being home from work on the weekend and a nor’easter moving up the East Coast worked out just right to create one of my most cherished childhood memories.

If we talked at all, it was little. Now wasn’t the time for talking. Now was the time for silence and letting the sanctity of the moment sink in. Plus, one never knew when an owl might fly overhead or a startled deer might bound out of a nearby thicket. On and on we would walk, just a young boy and his father, neither, for the moment, with a care in the world. Behind us, the same two sets of footprints were being filled in by the still falling snow.

The first flakes might begin falling around midday. Within minutes, the snow fell with more intensity and filled the air. The frozen ground quickly became coated in white.

By 4:00 p.m., the sun was setting behind the mountain and a few inches of snow blanketed the ground. In preparation for our adventure, my father and I would place our boots, gloves, coats, hats, and overalls around the wood stove to warm them up.

Outside, the world grew darker, but the snow reflected enough light to create a scene from a Thomas Kinkade painting.

When our gear was fully warmed, we suited up to make our way into the frozen landscape outside. As we stepped out of the mudroom off the kitchen, the hushed world in white enveloped us. Neither of us spoke. We simply absorbed the beautiful scenery around us. The sound and feel of snow falling are things that you never forget: snowflakes hitting the dry leaves in the trees above, bouncing off your

Quietly, we made our way across the yard to the path in the woods—two sets of footprints, one enormous, the other small.

With our eyes adjusted to the lower light, we made our way down the path. The smell of pines and snow combined with the cold, damp air and entered our noses. Clouds of warm breath hung in the air as we trudged through the half-foot of freshly fallen snow.

Eventually, my smaller legs would start to become weary. And somehow sensing this, my new father would place his gloved hands under my armpits and with the greatest of ease lift me high into the air upon his shoulders. The two sets of footprints now became one. With snowflakes gently kissing my face, I rode confidently and comfortably upon my father’s broad shoulders as we headed, slightly cold, but with warm spirits, back toward the inviting glow of home.

Having placed our wet gear back around the wood stove to dry, we would sit together at the kitchen table talking over cookies and milk as the storm continued to rage outside.

Several years later, my father’s strong legs that once carried me at a critical time in my life were crushed in a horrific accident. But that’s another story for another time.

When I needed it most, the two sets of footprints became one. We all have to be carried from time to time. And we must never let those who carried us forget how much we appreciate them. For even in our darkest hours, when we felt like we couldn’t go on any further, there was someone there to lift us up.

with “Christmas for the City”

As

we continue living in COVID world, our holiday season was anything but normal. All of us tried to capture some degree of holiday spirit, given our circumstances. “Love Out Loud” is a local organization that faced a similar challenge this Christmas.

Love Out Loud launched “Christmas for the City” in 2008 with the goal of helping local churches connect with the community and celebrate Christmas in meaningful ways together. It began as a 3-night event at the Millennium Center that included music, crafts, art, food, and activities that were provided by local churches and organizations. In 2019 the event had grown exponentially to over 12,000 guests and 1,200 volunteers over one evening at the Benton Convention Center. Over 3,500 donated meals were served, 12 performance spaces filled the air with music, from the Parkland High School Marching Band, to theatre, to a gospel choir, to dance ensembles flowing through the hallways. The Convention Center was full of the Christmas spirit.

With all of our pandemic restrictions, Love Out Loud knew this effort was more important than ever, so they had to figure out how they could present Christmas for the City, 2020 style. I spoke with Liz Miller, Partnership Director at Love Out Loud, about how the Christmas for the City teams began planning in May 2020, all while keeping the “magic” of Christmas for the City and doing so in a safe manner for the community.

Ultimately a partnership with The City of Winston-Salem, The WinstonSalem Fairgrounds, and The Drive became a Drive-Thru Christmas experience. The Drive-Thru included live music, dancing, giveaways, Chick-fil-A sandwiches, Sunshine Beverages, a collection of supplies for Senior Service’s “Remember in December” initiative and, of course, Santa!

Liz explains, “After the Drive-Thru, individuals could continue to a short Drive-In service with amazing gospel music, powerful speakers, prayer, and encouragement, in a time when connection is so needed. Honks could be heard echoing as makeshift “Amens” during the service.”

I Am Not Enough

I was recently having a conversation with a friend of mine who was thinking of getting a ring that said, “I am enough.“ My first thought was, “What a great idea!” She’s single, and I understood that she was looking for a visual reminder that she is worthy and doesn’t need to settle. But the more we shopped online for this message, the more I grew disenchanted by it. Finally, I said to her, “I know where you’re going with this, but the more I think about it — you aren’t enough. That message is misleading. Only Jesus is enough.”

convinced Eve that God was holding back from her (Genesis 3), he deceived her into believing that she had to take action if she wanted more power. She bought the lie that says, “‘I am enough,’ not God.”

Some may roll their eyes and think I’m splitting hairs. But as one who wrestles with the sin of self-reliance, I know how easy that trap is to fall in — where you try to do it all yourself and trust no one to help you or support you. I know the dangers of how that mentality can creep into your faith, too, and cause you to forget to go to Jesus with everything. Hands raised here…. Been there, done that. Still do from time to time.

But that is not remotely close to what the Bible says. In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul shared that he had a personal struggle. He prayed about it, but the answer wasn’t, “You’re enough.” The answer was, “God is enough.”

Verse 9 says, “And He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

When Peter wrote that we should cast our cares on Jesus (1 Peter 5:7) — he meant it.

After all, Peter heard Jesus’ personal invitation that applies to all of us — “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Jesus cares about the things that we care about.

Things that may be insignificant in the longterm, but because He cares about us, He cares enough to listen, guide, and direct us.

Take pride in the truth that you can’t and aren’t supposed to be enough. Thank Jesus that He is! And He always will be!

But Satan has been convincing us of that lie, “I am enough,” since the very beginning.

Even in the Garden of Eden, when he

As I said earlier, I too struggle with the “I am enough” deception. Ask anyone who has ever worked with me. I don’t delegate very well.

My professional motto has been “Shove over and let me drive.” In short — get out of my way because “I am enough.”

Doesn’t that feel AH. MAZ. ING?!?!?! To know that it’s not about YOU, but it’s all about HIM!!!! That we aren’t supposed to be enough, and we’re not supposed to carry these loads!!!! That truth should make you feel a huge weight lifted off your shoulders.

All out of Love?

Okay, I will get this off my chest before going any further. I’ve never understood why we as a society look for guidance from those who are, generally speaking, the least likely to be able to provide it. I know this seems horrendously judgmental, but also, I believe it is true. What am I talking about? I recently read a scholarly article about the influence celebrities have on us, and it truly is a bit mind-boggling. If you have any doubts about its validity, research how much an actor, entertainer, or professional athlete is paid to endorse everything from diapers to dentures. If these folks didn’t have significant sway in what we buy, what we do, or what we believe, there is no way these top companies would be shelling out the big bucks.

They became mega corporations for a reason.

Celebrities’ superhuman influence doesn’t bother me much when it comes to shaping our society’s fashion or sneaker choice. But it irks me to no end when we seek guidance from this group on the big questions.

Like: “Why do we exist?” “What is our purpose?” Or “What is love?” (Including romantic love...Valentine’s Day is upon us, after all.) Please understand, I am

no puritanical curmudgeon. I enjoy pop music, especially from the 80s. Who doesn’t love big hair, screeching guitar, or leather leggings?! And I do believe many of these vocal artists, from “Journey” to Justin Bieber, are able to capture the pubescent heart-wranglings perfectly.

But as Paul writes to the church in Corinth, “When I was a child...I thought like a child...but when I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.” In other words, sooner than later, we have to grow up. This is particularly true when it comes to love, including the love we have for our spouse. If we don’t, we will be in a world of hurt. Why? The form of love that pop singers have been crooning about since crooning began is sensual, primal, emotional love. The topsy-turvy, up-anddown variety. I am not saying they are “all out of love” (“Air Supply”) as they indeed describe an element of the “L” word. But to quote Steve Winwood, “Bring me to the Higher love.”

If we really want to “know what love is” (“Foreigner”), its fullest expression that will lead to a lasting marriage, we are best served turning to Love itself, God, rather than to “Spotify” or a celebrity’s blog or vlog. God in Christ taught us who to love (our enemies, our neighbors, and pretty

much everyone in between), then showed us what love is by dying on the cross for us. Paul, through God’s Spirit, summed it up: love is “patient, kind, not envious, not boastful, selfless, doesn’t keep record of other’s mistakes…” 1 Cor 13:4-5. A biblical scholar would point out that Paul was not specifically addressing love between a husband and wife here, but it applies all the same. Believe me, after 26 years of marriage, this is the kind of love that will enable you to grow old together rather than consulting a divorce attorney.

So, what is the point of all that? Celebrities and professional athletes may or may not be the most reliable source to show us how to wear our hair, which shoes might get us the most attention, or which stocks to buy. And Pop vocalists might hit many of the right notes when it comes to describing adolescent romantic angst.

But when it comes to answering life’s biggest questions, these folks are often “dancing in the dark” (Bruce Springstein) as much as, if not more than, we are. So as we ponder on this Valentine’s Day what kind of love will last a lifetime, I urge us to look no further than the One who didn’t only preach it, but lived it out. His variety of love is the type of love that will “lift us up where we belong.” (Joe Cocker, J. Warners).

work/life balance can be challenging enough before you become a parent, and once you add “mom” to your list of roles, finding that sweet spot becomes exponentially more difficult. Suddenly, you’re pulled in two distinctly different directions and want to give your all to both. As an added complication, now that many of us can work from just about any location, it can be hard to “turn off” work when you’re at home, potentially taking precious time away from your ability to be fully present with your family. Enter stress and guilt and the feeling you’re not quite good enough at work AND at home. Not exactly how you’d like to live your life, huh?

Here’s some good news: You’re most definitely not alone. A majority of mothers of young children are now in the workforce, so more women than ever are trying to figure out how to make this delicate dance work. Secondly, there are some steps you can take to try to make the most of balancing your career and your parenting responsibilities. (Remember, though: The most important thing is to figure out what works for YOUR FAMILY. Okay, with that disclaimer out of the way, here are a few things to consider as you work toward work/parenting balance in your life: Recognize the ebb and flow of both work and family. There are likely seasons to your work life, just as there are within your family’s schedule.

Occasions like the first day of school or sick days require more focus on your kids. Conversely, it’s likely there are probably times in your work life that require more attention, whether it’s prep for big client meetings or a predictably busy tax season. Give yourself grace and recognize that if there’s not a perfect 50/50 balance between work and family, that’s completely normal!

Lean on your village. Do you have people in your life offering to help you with juggling things? Learn to say yes to their generosity, and believe them when they say they’re glad to help. Also, don’t be afraid to take initiative to add to your village when you need to, whether that means splitting carpool duties with another parent or figuring out a way to share portions of your workload with a

colleague when it makes sense to do so.

Establish appropriate boundaries. If you’re someone who can work from anywhere, make sure you DON’T. It’s up to you to put limitations in place to make sure you aren’t bringing your laptop to bed night after night or checking work e-mails on your phone during family meals. In the same way, it might work well for you to schedule pockets of time to work outside of standard business hours when you need to make sure you’re caught up.

Work with your partner or support system to get childcare in place during those windows, and do your best to get work done during the scheduled time, and then put it away so you can be present with family.

Remember, you aren’t alone. It’s worth repeating: More moms are trying to balance work and family now than ever. That means you have women all around you who can relate to your situation and who can offer advice, support, or just an empathetic listening ear when you need one.

February, the month of hearts, candy, flowers, cards, gifts and love. Many people think Valentine’s Day is a holiday perpetrated by several commercial enterprises. In truth, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated as far back as the ancient Roman ritual of Lupercalia. The history is unclear about who St. Valentine was and how he became associated with this rite. The different theories on who and how this romantic day evolved makes for interesting reading. The one thing we know for sure is that this special day has lasted for centuries.

As a child, I fondly remember taking a shoe box to school and decorating it with cut-out hearts and lace doilies in anticipation of it being filled with valentines from classmates. Even then, the girls secretly hoped for a special valentine from a boy they liked; the boys pretending not to notice the girl’s reaction.

paper, tissue paper or whatever you have that will cover it. I also like to have some child’s scissors, construction paper, colored felt, glue sticks, doilies, stickers, crayons and washable markers, so the children have choices to use in their creative endeavors.

I doubt, with COVID still hanging around, that schools will be having any parties. I hate all the things our young people have missed this past year. So many fun-filled events they won’t have a memory of. As grandparents, whenever possible, we can take it upon ourselves to make these days for our grands as special as possible.

These items can also be used to make special cards for their parents. While cleaning out my parents’ home, my sister and I found several homemade cards that my mom had kept. There is something endearing about a child giving a gift he or she had made and are so proud of. No matter how it turns out, it came from their heart.

Again, while making cards, cover the work space, so the glue, and possibly glitter, make for an easier clean-up.

Help them where need be, but let them take the lead in the process.

If you live near your grands and are able to see them face-to-face, there are several projects you can work on together. Plan a day to bake and decorate cupcakes and/ or cookies. If you don’t have any already, buy a few cookie cutters appropriate for the day. Have on hand several decorating items, such as frosting, candies, sprinkles, food coloring, etc. Lay out paper or a throw- away tablecloth—little people tend to be messy—and let the good times roll.

These ideas are clearly for the young ones. For the older grands, or the ones that you aren’t able to be with, send a small token to let them know you are thinking of them.

A gift card is always appreciated if you don’t know what or can’t find something they would like. Another idea is promising a special outing with them the next time you are together. It gives you the opportunity to learn what their interests are, what’s important to them, what they’ve been doing, etc.

You can also help them decorate a box for some special valentines from you that you can secretly put in their new box. Have items to wrap the box—wrapping paper is always good, but you can use aluminum foil, parchment

I love spending this kind of time with my grandchildren.

Not only is it quality time, but it makes for a bonding experience and wonderful memories that will bring a smile to my face for many, many years, as well.

2010, Erinn Dearth founded Letters From Home in Winston-Salem, NC, a singing and tap dancing USO-style show with a mission to honor veterans, active military heroes and their families by reviving patriotism through music.

The show’s idea came from Erinn’s father, Pat Dearth, a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. Since its inception, Letters From Home has performed over 900 shows across 41 states, and in 2020, hosted several live online events. A documentary produced by Our State Television on the group won an Emmy award, and in 2019, they traveled to Normandy, France to perform for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. The current touring performers of Letters From Home are the recently engaged Dearth and Dan Beckmann, but throughout the years, the group has seen many performers who are all returning- in some way- for celebrations around the 10th anniversary of the show.

Dearth, Beckmann and past members of the group Courtney Groves, Amanda Newman, Serah Haley, Chelsea Vanderhamm, Heidi Shafer and Brynn Lewallen all sang together for the first time in a video of “When You’re Smiling” that can be viewed now on the Letters From Home YouTube and facebook pages.

Additionally, a 10-Year Reunion calendar is available for purchase, featuring memories throughout the years of life on the road with Letters From Home. Calendars are $20 and all proceeds go to the Pat Dearth Veterans Performance Fund, which allows the group to perform across the country in veterans hospitals and VA homes, and in these times create digital content to be enjoyed by veterans from their homes.

When asked what her favorite part of Letters From Home has been, Erinn Dearth said that without a doubt, it’s been the thousands of people the group has met along the way.

“Reflecting on the friendships that have blossomed over the past ten years has been a truly humbling experience”, she said. “Audience members have become friends, and those friends have become extended family”.

people leave behind a mark that is so significant, we have to honor them. We have to find some tangible way to let their name and legacy live on. Such is the case for a woman named Bonnie Felk. Bonnie passed away on June 26, 2020, and those who knew her remember her as a woman with a sweet smile, a loving heart and a generous spirit. She was a devout Christian who invested her time advocating for the sanctity of life at Compassion Care Ministries.

“Bonnie joined our team in November, 2008,” said Compassion Care Center’s executive director, Jennifer Hemric. “Since I only had five months of seniority in the organization, we worked closely together, learning the ministry side-by-side. Everyone in our organization loved Bonnie, and she was a diligent, hardworking woman who truly loved the women we serve.”

Jennifer continued, “At Compassion Care Center, we welcome women who find themselves in unplanned pregnancy situations. It was a perfect mission for Bonnie, for whom this wasn’t just a job – it was a calling. She loved to nurture and love on these women, many of whom were scared, alone and uncertain of their next steps. After we lost Bonnie last year, we knew we wanted to do something to honor her life and years at Compassion Care Center. But, we weren’t sure what we wanted to do.”

While the team mulled over their options, God was already at work with a plan.

Companion Ministries of Yadkinville, whose mission is to provide homes for the homeless, had been given some land. Their ministry envisioned a tiny house community; however, they could only put one house on the property per the town regulations. The two organizations had worked together in the past, and since they could not create the tiny house community they envisioned, they decided to donate the tiny house and lot to Compassion Care Center.

“Bonnie was aware of the house being built,” said Jennifer. “Unfortunately, she never had a chance to see it, but she was excited for the work Companion Ministries was doing.

It was a generous donation that will allow us to help young women with unexpected pregnancies have temporary housing to get on their feet. It’s a retreat meant to help those in need in a time of crisis. As we prepared for the house’s ribbon-cutting, the idea to name it “Bonnie’s House” seemed perfect. A fitting tribute to a woman who was loved by both Compassion Care Center and Companion Ministries. We are so pleased that Bonnie’s legacy lives on through such a wonderful asset to our center. Everyone who knew and loved her agreed that it was a befitting tribute!”

This Valentine’s Day, consider making it a movie night-in with the kids, with an array of healthy treats to make and eat before the credits roll. From pink popcorn to frozen yogurt-dipped strawberries and fizzy drinks, we have your festive snacks covered!

PINK POPCORN

FROZEN YOGURT-DIPPED STRAWBERRIES

CUPID PUNCH (SHIRLEY TEMPLE)

INGREDIENTS:

10 cups Popcorn (unflavored or kettle corn)

1 cup Pink or red candy melts

1 ( 5.3 oz.) container strawberry or chocolate Greek yogurt

3 cups Lemon-lime soda

3 Tbsp. Coconut oil 1½ cup Mini-marshmallows

Pink sugar or sprinkles (optional)

Pink or red sprinkles, decorating sugar, etc.

1. C ap strawberries and cut them in half.

1. In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave candy melts and coconut oil until thoroughly melted, about 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds. Stir until smooth enough to drizzle.

2. Line a large cookie sheet with foil. Using a fork, zigzag-drizzle half of the pink mixture all over the foil.

3. Pour a thin layer of popcorn on top and lightly press into the pink drizzle. Sprinkle marshmallows on top of popcorn. Drizzle the remaining pink mixture on top and immediately add sprinkles and decorative sugar so they will stick.

4. Allow pink drizzle to dry and harden, then toss and enjoy!

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

A Different Kind of Love Story

Social media can teach us some interesting things. Not everything is good or even true, but occasionally I come across a valuable nugget of information that’s of benefit. This happened to me when I read a post explaining, “Why your dog sits with you while you’re using the restroom.”

Having a family pet that does this made the posting all the more appealing. The post asserts (and I later confirmed through research) that it’s in a dog’s very nature to run with a pack.

Consequently, within the pack environment, when a dog begins to do their business, the pack keeps a guard out for them, protecting them in what they know naturally is their most vulnerable moment.

When our family dog sits at our feet or stands in the doorway during our “most vulnerable moment” they are protecting us, just as they would their pack. Because in essence, we are their pack, and depending on your relationship in said pack, you may even be the leader.

Upon learning this, it changed my whole perspective on the perceived annoying habit our dog was displaying.

Once I fully understood that she was merely protecting me, I saw the situation differently. I appreciated her concern for my welfare, even though I preferred not to have the company at that moment.

I also began to notice her tendencies at other times as well. For instance, whenever I sit in our family room by myself watching television, my dog, (female Maltese, by the way), if she’s not in my lap, will sit directly in the walkway leading into the room facing away from me and toward the entrance. I realized she’s still watching out for me. She does the same for my wife in this situation.

To prove her unconditional love for my son as well, whenever my wife and I leave to go out and my son is in his room, if our dog isn’t in there with him, she sits quietly in front of his door facing outward. Again, she’s keeping guard over him even when he’s not watching.

To see her do this for my family and to understand her genuinely good

intentions, I have to admit, does strengthen the bond between us even more. It also reminds me of a story my mom used to tell about a Labrador retriever she and dad had before I was born. Mom worked the second shift at the time, and dad said every night about the time Mom was to come home, Kippy (their dog) would scratch at the door to go out. He would then proceed to sit at the end of the sidewalk waiting for mom to pull into the driveway. At which point, he would politely walk beside her and be her security in the night as she walked in the house. He did this every time without

fail, regardless of the weather. Now that’s protection!

As for our beloved family pet, she’s getting older now. She doesn’t run around and play quite as much as she used to, and though she enjoys it immensely, she does get tired after her routine trips to the park. This makes me appreciate all the more the effort it must be for her to constantly feel obligated for our protection. So when I take her out in the yard to do her business now, and she turns to look at me in her most vulnerable position, I make sure to place myself between her and the road, thus giving her that same feeling of protection she gives us, letting her know that we’re also looking out for her.

When treated appropriately, a dog’s love is unconditional. It’s that unconditional love that makes them such a valuable part of the family. Remember this the next time they’re under your feet or blocking the doorway when you leave the room. It’s just their way of keeping you safe.

Lastly, I want to dedicate my column this month to Annie. She was an adorable Maltese that belonged to my cousin, and the very thing that motivated me to get one for my family. She passed away peacefully last year after living a long, happy, and adventuresome life. She got to go everywhere with my cousin and his family. She made a lasting impression on me as well, and we miss her. Here’s to Annie!

+ More, as its name implies, is much more than just a coffee shop. It is where joy happens. It is where differences are celebrated. It is where people are empowered. That’s why they’ve defined the word “Moji” as “the joy of jolt you get when you make somebody happy.”

So what makes Moji Coffee + More so joyful? Is it the brightly colored atmosphere or happy paint splatters that decorate the floor? Is it the enthusiastic greeting you receive when you walk through the doors? Is it the splendid art covering the “Moseum” wall? Yes, it is all of these things. But the best part about Moji Coffee + More is its people. Moji Coffee + More is making a wave in the local Winston-Salem community and beyond by employing people with disabilities, or as they like to say, people with DIVERSE abilities!

About 70% of people with disabilities are unemployed, which is why Executive Director, Tim Flavin, was determined to establish a place right here in WinstonSalem that would work toward lowering this number and empowering the disability community. As a vision became a reality, the coffee shop opened its doors on Trade Street in 2019 and since has provided not only employment but job readiness training to over 30 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Not only have these individuals succeeded as baristas, but they have shown the community much more.

The employees at Moji Coffee + More, playfully called Mojistas, spend their days mastering skills as baristas with the guidance of a job coach, but their training goes beyond that. Each day is an opportunity to work on various vocational skills such as communication, job preparedness, cashier skills, customer service skills and much more. For Mojista Sam Garrison, who now has moved into his own home and obtained a second job, Moji is “an opportunity to have a job like anyone else and to be able to have independence like everybody else to work toward my goals.” Known for his punny jokes and willingness to help whoever is there, Sam is just one of the many individuals Moji has seen gain independence and confidence from their time on the job.

“At the heart of Moji Coffee + More is the desire to show the community and the world just how capable people are, regardless of their differences. I have met some of the hardest workers in my life here and have seen so much self-growth.

It’s something I would want any employer to be a part of and share the joy of celebrating these people” says Natalie Hughes, General Manager of Moji Coffee + More. She explains their hope for 2021 is to share their mission broader, inviting other employers in the community to follow suit in providing well-deserved employment to individuals with diverse abilities. “We are actually working with Leadership Winston-Salem to gain a commitment from other employers to hire and to share how they can support employees with disabilities in an inclusive manner.”

The possibilities for the individuals at Moji Coffee + More and thousands of others in the disability community of the Triad are boundless with the support of a good team and most importantly, the belief in them and their capabilities. Amongst some of the talented individuals at Moji Coffee + More are artists, writers, musicians, historians, bakers, and so much more. This past year, Moji Coffee + More has supported several people with IDD by highlighting their abilities and liasoning other roles in the community. Meagan Matejka, a Mojista and colorful artist, was selected by the Public Arts Council to have her artwork on a bus station as a part of the city Artistic Bus Shelter Program. Claire Athens, who loves ancient history, is now baking at the new Ketchie Creek in Clemmons. Matthew Kelly, another Mojista, works a second job with UpDog Kombucha.

Tim Flavin, Executive Director and Special Olympics coach of over 25 years, explains why expanding the mission beyond the walls of Moji Coffee + More is so important to the disability community. “For some, this job may be theirs forever. For others, they may not want to serve coffee, but here is a place to start. They may want to go one to be a librarian, a nurse, a writer and we want to help them get there.” Along with the hopes to see their own team grow, Flavin explains that the team at Moji Coffee + More wants to impact as many lives of people with disabilities as possible. “We are so proud of the people we’ve hired. But as we began to hire people in the community, we thought 31 is a good number… but what about everyone else.”

Despite all obstacles of 2020, the team of Moji Coffee + More is hopeful for an impactful 2021 where even more individuals with diverse abilities can be employed and empowered.
