Breaking the Cycle:

How to Stop Passing Down Stressful Habits

Stress is a part of life, and we all experience it. But, did you know that stress can be passed down through generations? Many families unknowingly teach their growing children unhealthy stress responses, and it can shape how they handle challenges for years to come. It’s never too late to break the cycle. April is Stress Awareness Month, so let’s dive deeper into how we can reshape our family’s mental legacy.

HEALTHY VS. UNHEALTHY STRESS

Please understand not all stress is bad. Healthy stress, like preparing for a big presentation or learning something new, can motivate us and help us grow. But unhealthy stress – the kind that causes paralyzing worry, anxiety and exhaustion – can create a tense home environment and lead to long-term emotional struggles.

Stress becomes unhealthy when small daily frustrations pile up and go unchecked over time. If you grew up in a household where stress meant yelling, shutting down or avoiding problems, you may be unconsciously repeating those patterns with your family.

HOW TO BREAK THE CYCLE

Talk About It

RECOGNIZING GENERATIONAL STRESS PATTERNS

Take some time to think about your childhood and how others in your home reacted to stress and how it made you feel. Remember, stress is not necessarily the issue, but how you respond to it can be. Pay attention to patterns like:

• Snapping at your family over minor things.

• Feeling constantly on edge or easily overwhelmed.

• Ignoring your own emotions or bottling them up.

• Using distractions (like social media or overworking) instead of addressing problems.

These reactions don’t only affect you but your whole household, as well. Children pick up on stress even when you don’t say a word. If they see stress being handled with frustration, avoidance or fear, they are more likely to mirror these reactions in their own lives.

Stress thrives in silence. Instead of hiding your stress, be honest in a way that’s age appropriate for each child. Saying, “I’m feeling overwhelmed, so I need a moment to breathe,” teaches them emotions are normal and manageable. They’ll need help along the way, so let them know it’s okay to talk about their stress, too. A simple, “How are you feeling today?” can create a safe space for your children to open up.

Change Your Mindset

Stress can feel bigger than it really is because our mind has a habit of exaggerating. When faced with a challenge, we can try shifting our perspective by replacing phrases like, “This is a disaster!” with, “This is a challenge, but I can handle it.” This will create a new habit that you’d be happy to pass down to your children.

Find Healthy Coping Strategies

Show your children how to manage stress in healthy ways, like:

• Taking deep breaths before responding to a problem.

• Going for a short walk when you’re feeling frustrated.

• Expressing feelings through journaling or art.

Ask for Help

Reversing generational habits isn’t easy, so it can be beneficial to incorporate therapy, join a support group or reach out to others who model healthy stress management. Lean on resources that will help you change.

Every family has challenges, but you can decide that stress won’t define yours. By changing how you handle stress, you’re not just improving your well being, you’re also teaching the next generation how to thrive in any situation which will help them personally and professionally. So, take a deep breath, and remember you have the power to create a home filled with peace and not stress.

The Importance of Confidence

Confidence

– some people have it; some people don’t. I watched my son as he readied himself for his role as Richard III in Shakespeare’s tragedy, rehearsing his lines with never a waiver or false step. When I nervously asked him if he was afraid he would forget some of the words in his soliloquy on stage, he looked evenly at me and said, in the confident tone he seemed to have even as a toddler, “No, I’m not. I won’t forget my lines. I don’t do that.” And, he was right – the day of the show, he was masterfully perfect; not a single mistake.

I represent the other end of the spectrum – I cannot do public speaking and have declined every single opportunity to do so because I am certain I’ll either forget what I’m supposed to say or, even worse, pass out in the effort. Of late, I’ve taken it upon myself to study the characteristics of confident people and, by doing so, become one myself, admittedly a daunting task in theory and in its prospective execution. Here is what my research has disclosed.

The word confidence comes from the Latin “fidere” meaning “to trust.” To be self confident is to trust in oneself and, as a result, to engage successfully in the world. Confidence is linked to self esteem – great confidence will boost your self esteem. The quality of confidence allows one to believe in their abilities and to actively embrace taking risks, pursue challenging goals and opportunities. Confident people understand that mistakes are integral to growth and that each misstep is a valuable lesson, a stepping stone, towards future success. When you are confident, you are more likely to step outside your comfort zone, try new things and bounce back

from setbacks because you have that pre-existing positive mindset which is based on a conviction that your judgment is trustworthy and sound. You can be as rich as Elon Musk, but you still can’t buy the positive self image and self worth that true confidence is predicated upon. Psychologists will tell you that confident people tend to be happier than those who aren’t. One individual, a doctor T.C. North, said in his article “The 12 Benefits of Increasing Your Self Confidence” that “A benefit of increasing your self confidence is it adds to your happiness, adds to your joy.” Another practitioner, Nathaniel Branden, continued that stream of thinking when he said that “the reputation you have with yourself – your self esteem – is the single most important factor for a fulfilling life.”

Clearly, confidence is critically important in life – it allows us to move more easily and happily through the world. But, how does one improve that self esteem which is inextricably linked with going boldly and unflappably into the word? I’ve put together a list that continues to help me – a constitutionally non-confident person – enormously, ideas gleaned from my research in the field of psychology:

• Psychologist Rick Hanson in his Psychology Today article (9/14/2018) says that confidence is linked to “being on your own side.” Are you REALLY on your own side, or are you undermining yourself with bad habits, harsh self criticism and bad choices? If so, throw out the story of your life if you are NOT a hero in it, and write a new story where you have a sense of agency and accept the fact that YOU are the architect of your own narrative. Refuse to be a victim or someone who blames everyone else.

• Take risks and see what happens. Let go of the fear of possibly making a mistake. Forget about the approval of others and what they might say which diminishes your ideas or actions. Don’t spend time with people who are not good for you. No one can take you down if you don’t give them the power to do so.

• Make a list of things you are good at. Give yourself compliments. Don’t carry things that weigh you down – feelings of bitterness, anger or resentment. Find it in your heart to forgive; that is one of the hardest lessons I personally have had to learn, but it continues to be a lifesaver.

• Stop comparing yourself to others – focus on the interior work YOU have to do on yourself.

• Practice relentlessly on being a better person, the type of individual you’d want your own child to be. More kind, generous and compassionate.

J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, famously said “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.” Few of us are born confident but, with a bit of copious effort, we too, as writer Louisa May Alcott averred, will “not (be) afraid of storms for (we are) learning how to sail (our) ship.”

Become A Communicator Better and Strengthen

As women, we often find ourselves taking on multiple roles in our personal and professional lives. We wear many hats, juggling responsibilities and expectations with grace and finesse. However, this multiplicity of roles can sometimes lead to difficult situations where we find ourselves in unexpected circumstances, struggling to communicate effectively.

THE IRONIC ROLES WE PLAY

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you’re expected to be the voice of reason, only to realize you’re the one who needs guidance? Or perhaps you’re expected to be nurturing, but you’re feeling fiercely independent?

These role reversals can lead to communication breakdowns as we struggle to reconcile our own needs and expectations with those of others. Sometimes, for example, the caregiver becomes the one needing care. At other times, it is the peacemaker who becomes the source of conflict.

Even though these ironic roles can be a source of frustration and confusion, they can also present an opportunity for growth and self awareness.

CAPITALIZING ON STRENGTHS AND IMPROVING WEAKNESSES

To become better communicators, we must first understand our own strengths and weaknesses. What

are your natural talents and abilities? With what areas do you struggle? We can build confidence and develop a sense of authority and expertise when we acknowledge and capitalize on our own strengths, and when we find our passion and conviction, our communication skills can effectively inspire others.

On the other hand, we also need to acknowledge and understand our weaknesses. Doing so can help us adapt more successfully to different personalities and communication styles. Acknowledging our weaknesses can help us learn the active listening skills that help others feel heard. We can learn to reduce defensiveness, become more empathetic and understanding, and find common ground.

WORKING WITH DIFFICULT PERSONALITIES

We’ve all encountered people who seem to rub us the wrong way. Perhaps their communication style is abrasive or their personality clashes with ours. However, we can learn to keep our emotions in check. By understanding the true nature and tendencies of ourselves and others, we can learn to respond with patience when others irritate us. We can identify trigger points that we need to

navigate around and can learn to adopt a neutral tone to build bridges, deescalate tension and help us find common ground.

For example, if you’re working with someone who is highly analytical, you can adapt your own communication style to focus on their data-driven insights and logical reasoning. If, instead, you’re working with someone who is highly emotional, try to focus on empathizing and validating their feelings. Listen carefully, ask questions if appropriate and, above all, remain patient and respectful.

BRIDGING GAPS AND BUILDING BONDS

So, how can we overcome communication barriers and build strong, meaningful relationships? Here are a few strategies to get you started:

Practice Active Listening: Focus on understanding the other person’s perspective, rather than simply waiting for your turn to respond.

Use “I” Statements: Rather than making what might feel like an accusatory statement, focus on your own feelings by using an “I” statement that shifts the emphasis to your own feelings instead. For example, you might turn the phrase, “You make me really mad” into “I feel really

mad.” The emphasis is now on you, not on the other person. Using the “I” phrase, they will not feel accused and won’t respond defensively.

Seek Common Ground: Find areas of agreement and build on those to create stronger bonds.

Be Open to Feedback:

Be willing to listen to and incorporate the feedback of others, and be open to giving constructive feedback in return.

Resolving conflicts and improving overall communication helps to increase collaboration and teamwork in the workplace and, by becoming better communicators, we can build stronger, more meaningful relationships that enrich our personal and professional lives.

Becoming a better communicator will create deeper, more lasting connections with others, but it requires self awareness, empathy and a willingness to grow and adapt.

Capitalizing on our strengths, improving our weaknesses and working with difficult personalities can help us build stronger, more meaningful relationships that bring joy and fulfillment to our lives.

Since taking over, he has dedicated his impressive professional career to continually improving and expanding the family practice. He carefully designed and built their current office location in 2012 and, shortly after, partnered with Dr. Symmes. He is married to Montine, and they have two adult children, both recently married. He is active at Home Moravian Church and loves spending his free weekends in the NC mountains. Dr. Wilkinson also enjoys exercising at the YMCA, riding his bike and recently started to enjoy yoga classes with his wife!

Born and raised in Winston-Salem, Dr. Symmes attended R.J. Reynolds High School, going on to North Carolina State University where he majored in biology and graduated valedictorian. Dr. Symmes completed his dental education at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2011, then practiced in Charlotte for four years. He happily returned to Winston-Salem to team up with Dr. Wilkinson in 2014, helping to grow the practice and expand the dental services offered. “I feel fortunate to practice in my hometown, where I can treat friends, neighbors and our greater community.” Dr. Symmes is actively involved with Samaritan Ministries, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and Torchbearers International. In his free time, Dr. Symmes enjoys spending time with his wife, Bethany, and their two children, Catherine and Henry. Dr. Symmes is also a recreational pilot – a passion that started young as he grew up flying with his father.

Dr. Becherer grew up in Chapel Hill, NC and moved to Winston-Salem six years ago. She and her family have put down roots here and are happy to consider Winston-Salem “home.” She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for her undergraduate degree in chemistry, then worked as a dental assistant in Manhattan for a year. She returned to UNC for dental school, where she developed her clinical skills, graduated with honors and was elected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. After dental school, Dr. Becherer completed an Advanced Education in general dentistry residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, and she joined Peace Haven Family Dentistry in 2019. Dr. Becherer met her husband, Tripp, at the UNC School of Dentistry, and they now have two young children, Audrey and Dean. She and her family love walking around Sherwood Forest with their greyhounds. She is an active member of the Junior League of Winston-Salem and enjoys quilting, traveling and exploring vintage/ consignment home goods stores.

AMY M. PIERCE, DMD

Dr. Amy Pierce was born and raised in Greenville, SC, and earned her undergraduate degree from Clemson University before attending the Medical University of South Carolina, where she earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. She met her husband, Trent, at MUSC, and after graduating in 2014, they moved to Winston-Salem. Dr. Pierce has been practicing general dentistry in King, NC, for the last 10 years, where she’s created a welcoming and gentle environment for all patients. Fancy fork

Welcome back to the Fancy Fork – your seasonal produce insight and farm-style recipes that are made to satisfy.

Strawberries are finely back; but, there’s also a few more spring delights to cherish this month like papayas, kumquats, limes, mangos, oranges, pineapple and kiwi. For the vegetables this month, we’ve got endives, carrots, celery, fennel, kale, spring onions, sunchokes, turnips, radicchio, fava beans and asparagus.

This month’s recipe is all about strawberries, as well as a few tips on making the perfect cup of matcha. They’re not only one of the most

STRAWBERRY MATCHAS

PREP. TIME: 10 MINUTES | COOK TIME: 10 MINUTES

TOTAL TIME: 20 MINUTES

INGREDIENTS

2 cups fresh strawberries or frozen and thawed ¾ cup granulated cane sugar

1 cup + ¼ cup water, divided 1 tsp. matcha

½ cup milk of choice

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Trim the stems off the strawberries and slice in half, then add to a large saucepan. Add in one cup water and sugar. Stir to combine before placing over medium high heat.

2. Bring the water to a boil, then simmer for 8-10 minutes. Let cool for 5-10 minutes before either straining or blending until smooth.

3. Place in a glass container to store in the fridge for up to two weeks, or one week if blending with the strawberries.

4. To make the matchas, add ¼ cup of the strawberry syrup to the bottom of a large glass. Fill the glass with ice.

5. Add the whole milk on top.

6. Shift the matcha into a large mug or whisk to get rid of any lumps. Pour in the ¼ cup HOT water and use a matcha whisk to whisk briskly from side to side, then up and down, until a frothy layer forms on top.

7. Pour the frothy matcha on top of the whole milk.

8. Stir with a glass straw to combine and enjoy!

A perfect matcha begins with the matcha itself. You want to use a quality matcha powder, and you want to whisk it properly so that it creates a frothy layer on top. For this, I highly recommend using a matcha whisk. When whisking, I like to think of the M & Z’s concept. So, you are whisking briskly from side to side (making a “Z”) and then up to down (making a “M”). Repeat that cycle until that frothiness begins to form.

Local Legends: Author Charlie Lovett

I’ve always been an avid reader across various genres. With so many books to choose from, sometimes I struggle picking between the plethora of options.

While I do enjoy a good TikTok book recommendation (if you haven’t read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, you should), I tend to decide my next read based on the author. I’ve worked my way through nearly all of my two favorites, Ken Follett and Ruta Sepetys, so I’m always on the lookout for something new.

Besides going by authors I’m familiar with, one of my other favorite ways to find a new read is when friends or family give me suggestions. It should be a love language in itself to tell someone “I read this and thought of you.” Bonus points if you hand them the used book to borrow, pages still dog-eared and all.

This got me thinking: I have been proactively shopping local lately to support small businesses in my community, so why not read local? Why not learn about local North Carolina authors’ books through a variety of genres and lengths, expanding my horizons to the talented authors just in this area? On top of that, I can provide some book suggestions for anyone who is struggling to find a good book or author to commit to.

CHARLIE LOVETT

Charlie Lovett is a Winston-Salem native, current resident and the author of eight books. His work has depth in genre – ranging from a study on the life of Lewis Carroll to historical thrillers and even a book for young readers. Fun fact about Lovett – he is known for having a collection of Lewis Carroll works and even curated an exhibition on the late author.

THE ENIGMA AFFAIR

My favorite genre is historical fiction, so I naturally gravitated towards The Enigma Affair when I was sifting through the choices for a Lovett book to read. This World War 2 thriller centers around a librarian and a criminal that work together to decipher a Nazi message encoded on an old Enigma machine.

The Enigma Machine was an excellent read – fast paced, exciting and well researched. I knew a little about what an Enigma machine was after watching the film The Imitation Game, but I learned so much more through Lovett’s novel and was entertained by the dynamic cast of characters. That’s what draws me towards historical fiction; being able to learn about a time period I am unfamiliar with while navigating the interpersonal struggles of the characters.

Historical fiction isn’t your thing? That’s fine! I recommend checking out Lewis Carroll: Formed by Faith if you’re interested in nonfiction and biographies. Do you want to give your kids an exciting book full of magic? The Book of the Seven Spells Book One: Guardians may be the perfect fit. Lovett has a lot to offer across various topics; all of his books and links to where you can buy them are on his website.

I haven’t had a chance to get through Lovett’s full catalog of works, but I am looking forward to shifting my focus when I read into a local lens. So, if you shop local, why not read local, too? Winston-Salem’s Charlie Lovett is a great place to start.

Smoked Cheer Wine Party Ribs

Pit Master Tip

There are a lot of different methods for baby back ribs. You can smoke hot and fast for two hours until a target temperature of 203 degrees or low and slow for five hours. I take the membrane off to penetrate more smoke flavor. You can score it or keep it on. If removing, the easy way is to use a paper towel to peel it away from the back of the ribs.

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 3-4 hours

Yields: 1 rack of baby back ribs

Smoked ribs that take a fraction of the time it takes to make regular ribs!

Ingredients:

1 rack baby back or St. Louis-style ribs

2 T BBQ rub

1 Stick of unsalted butter

2 T brown sugar

Apple cider vinegar for spritz

First, set your smoker to around 250 degrees. While the smoker is heating up, flip your rack of ribs over and cut in between each bone making single ribs.

Season with your favorite BBQ rub and place on the smoker at 250 degrees for two hours.

Once your ribs reach an internal temperature of around 170-175 degrees, place them in an aluminum pan with one stick of butter, some brown sugar and Cackalacky Sweet Cheerwine BBQ sauce.

Mix everything together and cover with aluminum foil. Place back on the smoker for another 1.5 to 2 hours. These come out perfect every time and are great for your next get together or just making them for your family.

3 Heartwarming Questions My Husband Asks Our Son Every Night

When you’re a parent of small children, bedtime can feel like a marathon with no finish line. The goal? Stick to the routine and maybe – just maybe – everyone will make it out unscathed.

In our house, bedtime has followed the same general script for as long as I can remember: pajamas, potty and teeth, read a book, make up a story (but only in the glider, because apparently any other location is unacceptable), song and snuggles. And, let’s not forget about the occasional passionate speech from our son about the deep injustices of bedtime. Rinse and repeat.

One night, after a Zoom meeting ended earlier than expected, I tiptoed upstairs to see if there was still time to make a surprise guest appearance and sneak in a few extra snuggles. I stood in the hallway and could hear my husband’s voice, calm and familiar. I quietly pushed open the door and knelt beside him at our son’s toddler bed.

“Did Daddy already sing?” I whispered.

“Not yet,” my son whispered back, “we’re doing questions.”

Questions? I glanced at my husband, giving him that look – the kind only two people who’ve been together forever can decipher without saying a word. And, that’s when I

learned about the three simple, beautiful questions my husband has been asking our son at bedtime every night.

1. What was your favorite part of today?

2. What are you grateful for today?

3. Did you help anyone or show kindness today?

I was genuinely taken aback – in the best way – by the intentionality of this quiet conversation time my husband had created. I realized how easy it can be to just go through the motions to get our son to sleep after a long day, but here was my husband, carving out a small but meaningful space each night to pause, reflect and connect.

Later that evening, I asked my husband where the idea came from.

He thought for a moment and said, “The one thing my family gave me – without question – was a strong ability to focus on the positive parts of my day.” We talked about what a huge help gratitude can be for both of us in managing stress and even keeping moods balanced.

He went on to explain that he started asking the questions after noticing our son beginning to hyper-fixate on moments that didn’t go well – a struggle at school, a mistake he made or a fear he couldn’t shake.

“I get worried sometimes,” my husband admitted. “I know how easy it is to get stuck in that loop of only seeing the negative. So, I thought if we could create a nightly habit of remembering the good – the joy, the things we’re thankful for and the ways we show kindness – it might help shift his focus and build a stronger sense of self worth. I love how confident he is and I don’t want that to fade.”

And, then he added something that stuck with me and I think all of us as parents want for our children. “I hope that one day, this becomes second nature for him – that he grows up seeing his own worth, being proud of who he is, even with his imperfections.”

These three simple questions can sometimes make our son’s little brain spark the funniest, most random conversations. “He’ll suddenly ask me a totally unrelated question, or we’ll end up giggling about something silly – and that’s the best part. It’s my favorite time of day with him.”

It’s too easy to get caught in the mechanics of the bedtime routine – the teeth brushing, the books, the “I’m thirsty” requests right before lights out. We have to pause to remember that connection with our kids doesn’t have to be complicated. A simple question or two (or three) can create a lifelong impact and memory for our kids if we’re intentional enough to make space for it.

Summer camps are a great way to provide children with fun, lifelong memories. Salem Gymnastics & Swim’s Totally Kids Camps are truly unlike any other camp offered in the Triad. Salem’s Totally Kids Camps offer options for kids ages three and a half (potty trained) to 11 years old. Camps start June 2nd and end on August 8th. These classes are led by our professionally trained staff. No one knows how to do gymnastics, swimming and ninja like Salem does!

Camps at Salem have flexible options for parents to choose from. This includes a 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. morning camp for preschoolers and a 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. camp for schoolaged children. Scott Ertl loves helping families – whether it’s simply reminding them to breathe and relax, or making sure they laugh together and feel the love they have for each other.

After 22 years as a school counselor, Scott retired five years ago and has facilitated Parent-Child retreats for schools and churches off-and-on for more than 18 years. He offers this analogy to paint the clearest picture of his goals! “You know when it’s a heavy downpour and your windshield wipers just aren’t working well? That’s the last time you want to be out there changing the windshield wipers to put new ones on. And then, by Saturday afternoon, it’s escaped your memory to change those wipers –until the next rainy day. You may now be asking, ‘What does that have to do with anything?’ Many families have hectic mornings, frustrating meals and drawn-out bedtime routines that are stressful for all. There is simply not the time (or mindset) to create positive alternatives because they are feeling defensive, reactive or rushed. And, when there is a calm time, it’s simply not on their mind (like changing those wipers). Parent-Child Retreats offer a

time for families to talk about what’s working well and what they want to improve when they are feeling calm, creative and in partnership with each other, instead of adversarial,” he shares.

Scott’s retreats – which include pairs of one child with one parent – also offer fun times to play games, laugh and reminisce about enjoyable times from the past.

“Through humor and meaningful conversations, we create dialogue where there may have more recently been silence,” he adds, a good reminder that our daily lives can always be better!

Scott has trained hundreds of school counselors, PTA leaders and school principals to facilitate his style of retreats and authored the book “How to Facilitate a Parent-Child Retreat” to help counselors plan, publicize and coordinate their own events with confidence and success.

Personally, he now schedules one local retreat per month, for organizations able to attract at least 50 parent-child pairs to attend.

The Joyful Results of Parent-Child Retreats

“My wife and I have two school-age boys, so I don’t give up many Saturdays to facilitate retreats now since we’re going to baseball and basketball games, Scouts, JROTC and wrestling events with them.”

Scott shares that his favorite part of each retreat is the surprise at the end.

“The parent and child write a love letter to each other. I give them specific prompts and ideas to make it easy. The kids are so excited to give it to their parents, but I stop them from doing so right then. Instead, I ask them to go someplace special when they leave the retreat, like a park, favorite tree, backyard or church so they can share it with each other and explain what meant most to them from their letter. The next time they are feeling out of sorts with each other, they can ask the other to go back to the rock/tree/ park to talk and reconnect.”

Parent Kristal Howard, who attended a recent retreat at Ward Elementary, is eager to spread praise for the process.

“The Parent-Child Retreat, facilitated by Scott Ertl, was nothing short of phenomenal. It’s hard to put into words, but the entire time I was there, I kept thinking how thankful I was to have signed my son, Abel, and myself up to attend. I also kept thinking to myself how great it would be to have this retreat at other schools, particularly at the school where I formerly worked and where I work currently. Even our church! The interaction, the opportunities for reflection, the hands-on activities, the movement, the modality, the ‘a-ha’ moments and the ‘I am not alone’ moments – the entire three-hour session was very engaging and extremely enlightening! Five stars! Highly recommend!”

First, lose the idea that your kids are going to embrace sitting still for 20 minutes. Children will absolutely experience the benefits of meditation even in short, playful sessions! You can do a “ocean breathing” exercise where they close their eyes pretending to be different sea animals breathing underwater. You could try a simple, guided meditation where you create prompts to imagine they are doing specific actions in their mind. If you’re looking for something less creative on your part, check out a kid’s meditation YouTube video or an app like “Smiling Mind.”

Build a Bedtime or Morning Meditation Routine

Find a time of day that’s easy to add in a new habit. In the evening after teeth brushing and storytime, you can help your little ones relax by doing a simple “body scan” meditation where they close their eyes, lay in bed and focus on relaxing one part of their body at a time from head to toe. Morning routine leaving something to be desired to set your kiddo up for a strong day? Add in a quick 60-second gratitude meditation that reflects on what they are most appreciative for to set them up for positivity.

Get the Whole Family Involved

Behaviors and habits our kids see modeled by the adults in their lives are more likely to be adopted. Once or twice a week, can you make time to sit down together, get comfortable and do some deep breathing exercises or a short guided meditation? Maybe you’re trying to get the family moving more? Go outside for an after dinner walk and prompt family members to listen carefully to what sound they hear in nature? What can they focus on and listen for in their environment and share?

4 Winston-Salem Landmarks that Pay Homage to Our Past and Present Every Day

This month’s hidden gem is all about Winston-Salem. In fact, I share pieces of Winston-Salem culture and history, known as the city’s “landmarks” this month. These sites are as important to our city as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. Below are four Winston-Salem landmarks that you need to visit! Each has its own history and significance in our city.

OLD SALEM TEAPOT

Old Salem is one of the biggest pieces of Winston-Salem history. After all, it’s part of the “Twin City.” This coffee pot dates back to 1858 when local tinsmiths Julius and Samuel Mickey put it up as a way to advertise their tin shop that was located on South Main Street. It serves as a constant reminder of our city’s history and origins.

SHELL-SHAPED SHELL STATION

This historic landmark was built in 1930 by Quality Oil Company of Winston-Salem. Its creative and distinct shell design was even patented. Seven other shell-shaped stations were built in the area; however, this one on Sprague Street is the only one remaining. Preservation North Carolina restored it in the 1990s. Today, it serves as a great way to see how, even in the past, Winston-Salem was rooted in innovation and creativity.

WATER TOWER OTTER MURAL

As the City of Arts and Innovation, this list isn’t complete without this massive, 15,000-square-foot mural on a Winston-Salem water tank. Completed in April of 2018, the artist, Daas, used it to pay homage to the importance of our water resources and native flora and fauna. Not only is it beautiful to view, but this mural is award-winning. It won the Knope National Championship in a March Madness-style competition against 84 other municipal water facilities. This mural is a great reminder of the artistic side of our city.

WINSTON TOWER LETTERS

Anyone from Winston, or that lived here prior to summer of 2023, fondly remembers “Winston Tower” across the top of the downtown skyscraper. Until 1971, this was the tallest building downtown and, until two years ago, those letters stood high in Winston-Salem. Last year, two local businesses repurposed the letters. You can find the WS at Camel City BBQ Factory and the ET at Easy Tiger Beer Garden. These letters are a great sign of how our city constantly finds ways to create new ventures alongside the old history.

Located off 421, Wilkesboro is one of the small towns that serves as the gateway to the North Carolina mountains. It provides visitors with charm, outdoor adventures, culture and history. From Cub Creek Park to downtown shops, it’s an extremely family friendly and centric town.

It is a great base to visit numerous state parks like Rendezvous State Park or Stone Mountain State Park. You are in close range to some beautiful waterfalls like Moravian Falls or Cascade Falls. Everything about this area is truly an outdoor lovers’ dream.

History comes to life through music every April in Wilkesboro through the magic that is MerleFest. Founded in 1988, it is named after world-renowned flatpicker Doc Watson’s late son, Eddy Merle Watson. It showcases and celebrates music of the Appalachian region. You’ll hear a mix of music including old-time, classic country, bluegrass, folk, gospel, blues, Americana, classic rock and many others.

Unlike many music festivals in NC, MerleFest is an alcohol-free festival. This makes it perfect for families, especially those with young kids. Furthermore, there are numerous activities for children of all ages.

One popular area for families and kids is the Little Pickers tent. There are crafts, an art wall and the opportunity for visitors to play the different instruments they see and hear at MerleFest.

MerleFest Director Wes Whitson shares that the 2025 lineup will not disappoint. It includes Bonnie Raitt, The Avett Brothers and the return of their Late Night Jam, hosted by Sam Bush, which will include several legendary performers.

Whitson’s tip to MerleFest visitors is to, “Be prepared for all seasons. Spring in Wilkes County can present any situation and, most of the time, we get a little rain before it’s all said and done. Our fans don’t seem to mind a little rain.”

Those downed trees are littered along the north side of the upper ridge but, luckily, the domes and decks suffered minimal damage.”

Last year, she completed a two-year development process to the property, originally discovered and purchased by her father in the 1970s. She has honored his memory by building a destination that would make him proud! The 40-acre property is a scenic escape for sure and turned out to be picture perfect for setting up geodesic dome tents and introducing guests to the popular concept

Even after Hurricane Helene ravaged the area in October of 2024, she was thankful for her manageable damages – compared to so many – and quickly adapted her focus by collaborating with an amazing charity called Lansing’s Bridge to Recovery to make lodging space available for volunteers.

“This organization was formed by an incredible couple who are still working to rebuild driveways and bridges impacted by the storm in Ashe County,” she shares. “They were kind enough to send one of their contractors out to make our gravel road passable again. Debby has been using that downtime to make Glamping Wild an even better experience for guests and plans to introduce a selfguided forest bathing trail, certified by the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy (ANFT), as part of her upper trail clean up. The first phase of the certified forest bathing trail is expected to open before summer. She’s also working on a collaboration with a local chef to offer a Wilderness Tea Experience to guests, combining the luxury of afternoon tea service with a touch of nature and local flair. Debby hopes to have that guest experience online before the end of Summer 2025.

Debby also endured another emotional setback in the weeks prior to Hurricane Helene, losing two beloved pups who were by her side all through the building process. But always maintaining her resiliency, she’s still going strong while she prepares to reopen Glamping Wild this month. In other wonderful news, Debby is excited to introduce a new rescue pup! Sure to instantly become the “mascot” for this dog-friendly glampground, sweet “Ziggy” will be spending lots of time onsite this spring, and he’s sure to greet you with lots of wiggles and cuteness if he’s in residence during your visit!

Showers, Shovels & (Gentle) Shoves

The saying, “March winds and April showers bring May flowers” was first recorded in 1886 and, over the years, it was shortened to a version we are more familiar with –“April showers bring May flowers.”

The history of this proverb is credited to a poet in England. Thomas Tusser penned the phrase, “Sweet April showers do spring May flowers” as part of a longer poem written in the mid 1500s. Poetry analysts suggest it’s more likely a metaphor for patience when going through challenging things and the promise of better days ahead than it is an accurate description of seasonal weather patterns. However, as the reference to April showers originated in the United Kingdom where it tends to be especially wet, it could be that Tusser was simply acknowledging the sogginess that ushered in the start of spring.

Regardless of the meaning, we have widely accepted this adage as true, but is it? If you are talking about the volume of rain in April compared to other months for the overwhelming majority of the US, then no. April is actually the fifth wettest month of the year (National Centers for Environmental Information). However, if you are speaking of rain showers, then yes, April does have more showers than any other month, regardless of where you live in the country. Why is this? The answer lies in understanding the distinction between “rain” and “rain showers.”

RAIN: The result of the boundary shared by two bodies of air. These fronts can span hundreds of miles and consist of many cloud types. The clouds create precipitation that can last for days across a large geographical area, producing a lot of rain and, sometimes, flooding.

RAIN SHOWERS: The result of the jet stream moving northward, changing the air pressure and leading to an explosion of cumulus clouds (the white, fluffy ones) produce rain showers. The cloud groupings are smaller than those of a frontal rain, and the precipitation typically only lasts several minutes to a few hours which means... less rain.

The real wisdom in the proverb “April showers bring May flowers” may be that it signifies spring has officially arrived and it is time to head outdoors, enjoy the warmer temperatures, appreciate the rain showers, grab a shovel or trowel, and get busy with gardening activities!

NATIONAL GARDENING DAY:

APRIL 14, 2025

April, National Gardening Month, falls within the spring season for most of the country when conditions are suitable for planting. April 14th is highlighted as a day to celebrate this satisfying pastime as well as encourage gardeners and would-be gardeners alike to launch a year of homegrown delight of one kind or another – flowers, vegetables, herbs, houseplants, etc. Whether you live on a multi-acre property where alley cropping is possible, a postage-stamp-sized lot that is better suited for a raised garden bed or an apartment where small container gardens on a windowsill or balcony is best, you can have a beautiful garden with a little effort and access to sunlight, water and soil (unless you opt for a hydroponic garden). The types of garden and potential planting spaces are as vast as your imagination. Here are a few ideas to get you going on your gardening journey.

TEN GARDEN IDEAS:

Vertical – Use trellises, wall planters or other vertical structures for growing climbing plants, vegetables or roses.

Container – Select repurposed items like wood pallets, mason jars, baskets and buckets to grow herbs, flowers or other plants.

Themed – Get creative with this project – fairy, Zen, rock, pollinator, edible, butterfly, Mediterranean, hummingbird, etc.

Art – Choose plants for artistic purposes (e.g. flowers that produce dyes, grasses for weaving or plants to dry for decoration).

Monochromatic – Use any color as the base, and select a variety of plants to create different shades and hues.

Formal – Create a balanced, symmetrical design with a geometrical pattern and straight lines.

Wildlife Friendly – Provide a garden haven with an assortment of plants that offer food and shelter for all sorts of wildlife.

Succulent – Use any container with drainage holes to create a beautiful and resilient arrangement that is very forgiving.

Cottage – Plant a variety of perennial and annual flowers in an informal crowding manner (vegetables and herbs optional).

Meditation – Use a balcony, patio or corner of the yard to design a peaceful environment that is perfect for relaxing.

Spring Cleaning Your Pantry

A deep, thorough cleaning of your pantry is helpful to do once or twice a year. If you cannot remember the last time you cleaned out the pantry, don’t worry, it’s okay. Most of us don’t think to deep clean our pantry like we do other areas of our house. What we know, however, is that foods tend to sit there for months and even years. Before we know it, we have expired food taking up space that could have been eaten or donated. Think of cleaning your pantry when you’re spring cleaning your house. Did you just finish getting rid of your winter clothes and coats that didn’t fit this season? Now, turn your attention to the food, spices and oils that you haven’t used in a while! It’s good to go through it all, donate what you do not think you will eat and plan to begin using some of the foods that have been tucked on the back of the shelf before it’s too late!

Spring cleaning your pantry can help you save money, help you feel organized, reduce the clutter of your pantry and kick-start your meal planning goals with the foods you have forgotten that were in there. You can do one big overhaul in a day, or you can tackle it shelf by shelf and do a little at a time. As you are pulling items off the shelves, not only are you able to clean up the food that is there, but you can wipe down any spills or residue on the shelves, as well. (We’re talking about you, honey container!) As you put the food back on the shelves, do you want to organize it like it was? Or do you find that you want to put some items in a bin, so they don’t tip over? Or maybe they need to be at a level that your children can get to. Rethink the storage of where foods are within your pantry, and make it make sense for yourself and your family.

When cleaning your pantry, make sure you look at expiration dates. Toss it if it’s expired. If it’s close to expiring, think about whether you are going to use it or not. If not, create a pile to donate. There are plenty of food pantries in the area that would love to have your unopened foods.

TIPS FOR EXPIRATION DATES:

• Spices and herbs should be used within a year of opening. If you are unsure how long a spice has been open, you may want to replace it with a new container. It can be helpful to write on the bottom of the spice or herb the date that you open it, so when you clean the pantry again, you know how long it’s been open.

• Some oils, especially if you are not using them frequently, can go rancid if sitting in the pantry unused. If it looks questionable and you can’t remember the last time it was used, toss it.

• For canned goods, organize them in order of expiration date as you’re putting them back in your pantry. The ones that expire sooner, put them at the front. Meal plan with those sooner than the canned goods at the back of the shelf.

• If you have nuts in your pantry, think about placing them in the freezer. They will last longer stored in the freezer than in the pantry.

• Some baking supplies, like baking soda, can be used for cleaning if it’s past its expiration date.

As you toss or place items in the donation pile, make sure you have your grocery list handy to write down what you need to replace. As you put food back on the shelves, look at what you might be missing that are staples for yourself and your family. Stock up on items that you use often, and plan meals for any items that will be expiring soon! It may be daunting now as you are going through each food item, but in the end, you will have a refreshed pantry, and you will feel good about the items that are in the pantry. You may even have a start on next week’s meal plan knowing some of the items are expiring soon. You’ve got this – happy spring cleaning!

Things Wedding Guests Think But Won’t Say

Weddings are beautiful celebrations of love, but as a guest, there are often unspoken thoughts. While couples plan their big day with the best of intentions, here are some common things wedding guests might be thinking, but won’t openly express.

Recent social media posts about disgruntled wedding guests are numerous and include complaints like couples charging guests to attend or demanding expensive gifts. The idea of being appreciative for what you get or the old saying of “it’s the thought that counts” seem to have gone out the window. But, there are a few areas that are particularly sensitive to wedding guests.

DESTINATION WEDDINGS ARE EXPENSIVE

A wedding in a tropical paradise or a historic European city sounds magical and romantic, but for guests, it often means spending a small fortune. Flights, hotels and time off work add up quickly. If you’re having a destination wedding, be mindful that some guests may have to decline due to financial constraints.

A CASH BAR SHOULD BE KNOWN AHEAD OF TIME

Guests love an open bar, but if you’re having a cash bar, let people know in advance so they can come prepared. No one likes the awkward moment of realizing they don’t have cash on hand when it is time to order a drink.

LONG GAPS BETWEEN THE CEREMONY AND THE RECEPTION ARE FRUSTRATING

A long wait between the wedding ceremony and the reception can be a buzzkill. Guests may find themselves with hours to kill, often in an unfamiliar area. If a long gap is unavoidable, consider providing refreshments or a suggested activity nearby to keep guests entertained.

KEEP THE VOWS SHORT AND SWEET

Your love story is beautiful, but lengthy vows can test the patience of even the most devoted guests. Keep vows heartfelt yet concise – your guests will appreciate it.

OUTDOOR WEDDINGS WITHOUT SHADE ARE BRUTAL

Sunburn, overheating and sweating through formal attire are real concerns. If your wedding is outdoors, consider providing shaded areas, fans or even cold refreshments to keep guests comfortable.

VAGUE DRESS CODES LEAD TO CONFUSION

“Dressy casual” or “festive formal” can be open to interpretation. Guests don’t want to show up over- or underdressed, so be specific about attire expectations. If in doubt, examples or photos can help guide your guests.

IF YOU SAY “NO KIDS,” DON’T MAKE EXCEPTIONS

When you specify “no children” on the invitation, but then allow some guests to bring their kids, others will notice – and they might not be happy about it. If you want a child-free event, be consistent with the rule you established.

RSVP ONLINE, PLEASE!

I for one, could keep Hallmark in business, because I love sending cards. Cards and letters are a throwback to an age when people took time to share their feelings, but in today’s fast-paced life, RSVPing online is the way to go. Mail-back RSVP cards are charming, but your guests might find them inconvenient, especially if you send the invite out and the RSVP gets misplaced before it is returned or gets lost in the mail.

A LONG FIRST DANCE CAN FEEL ENDLESS

Your first dance is a special moment, but if it drags on too long, guests may start shifting in their seats. Keep it to a reasonable length or invite others to join in after a short while.

IF GUESTS LEAVE EARLY, DON’T TAKE IT PERSONALLY

Not everyone can stay until the last dance. Some guests have long drives home, early work commitments or just get tired. It doesn’t mean they don’t love and support you – they just need to head out a bit earlier.

At the end of the day, your wedding is about celebrating your love, but keeping these guest considerations in mind will ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience for everyone!

ADVENTURE AWAITS: PART 1

Trekking – Kick Off Spring with Walking Adventures

Warmer weather is finally here, and that means it’s time to get outside! There is so much fun to be had outside that I’m writing a seven-part series on all the adventures that await you and your family.

In this first part, I’m focusing on “trekking.” Walking is a great way to not only get exercise, but have an adventure, as well. I know walking might sound boring, but there are so many ways to make it fun, even for little kids. I share those ideas and some of my favorite trails to walk in Forsyth County below.

IDEAS TO ADD ADVENTURE TO YOUR TREK

• Create a nature scavenger hunt, and find items on your walks.

• Add timed sprints to your walks, and see who wins each one.

• For places with creek beds or water, like Salem Lake or Tanglewood, add in some splash time.

• Work on learning names of different plants and/or birds.

TRAILS TO HIT FOR YOUR NEXT WALKING ADVENTURE

Here are four of the many great parks or trails in Forsyth County.

Reynolda Gardens & Village

Spring and summer are especially beautiful at Reynolda Gardens and Village. There are gorgeous flowers and foliage almost everywhere you look on the trails, at the gardens and around the village.

I love the waterfall here, as well. It’s small but very picturesque. The lawn in front of the waterfall is a great area to stop for a picnic.

Stuart & Emma Thomas Memorial Trail

Located on the Crossnore Communities for Children property, this trail is truly a hidden gem in our community. The 92 acres of land incorporate trails that include views of everything from pastures and trees to our wonderful Winston-Salem skyline.

There are two entrances to this trail, which are off of Reynolda Road and Gillette Street. Depending on which route you take on the trails, the distance runs up to two and a half miles. One thing to note, there is minimal shade on this trail.

Tanglewood Park

While Tanglewood Park attracts many people for its many amenities, there is an intricate trail system around the entire park. The 1,100 acres feature numerous trail options, including the 2.2mile Red Multi-Use Trail.

One of the best parts about walking Tanglewood is you’ll never know what you’ll come across. You could find a cool train on display, a wonderful Children’s Garden, horses and so much more!

Salem Lake

The trails around Salem Lake have almost unmatched views in this area. If you are ambitious in your trekking adventure, this is a great choice as the loop around the entire lake is seven miles long.

In addition to the stunning views among the walking trails, there are plenty of little creeks and water holes to make pit stops for water fun. Don’t forget to also visit the new playground and marina there to add to your adventure.

When considering my days as a future mom, I never considered the fact that meal planning could sometimes be more difficult than actually raising children.

But alas, it has been a thorn in my side for many many years. Dinnertime occurs at the most inopportune time of the day … parents are arriving home from work … kids are getting home from school … homework needs to get started … kids need rides after school activities … the baby needs a bath and a 7 pm bedtime … you get the idea. Unless you have a clone, it is next to impossible to get everything accomplished. Using Alexa to create your shopping list is a convenient way to stay organized during meal planning. As you think of items throughout the week or discover you’ve run out of something, you can simply ask Alexa to add it to your list. Once your list is complete, you can access it through the Alexa app on your phone, making it easy to use while grocery shopping in-store or when placing an online grocery order.

Online Grocery Shopping/Pick Up & Delivery

One of the best time-savers for busy parents is online grocery shopping. Many stores in the Triad offer curbside pickup, allowing you to shop from the comfort of your home and pick up groceries when it’s convenient for you. Planning family meals becomes easier when you can browse recipes and add ingredients directly to your cart. Piggy-backing on the idea of online shopping, you can also have food delivered right to your door.

Salad for Lunch

In addition to the meal planning dinner drama, lunches can be a burden as well. And I’m not just talking about the kids – moms need to eat lunch, too! One of my favorite ideas is prepping salads for the entire week in either mason jars or Tupperware containers as individual servings.

Kids Lunches

I have two tried-and-true ideas for taking the stress out of this – 1. Buy lunch at school, 2. The kids pack lunches themselves. Seriously people – take this off your plate! My children packed their own lunches even in the early years of elementary school.

Rotisserie Chicken

Sounds like such a simple solution – because it is! Rotisserie chicken is an amazing value and provides enough chicken to make 2 – 4 meals! Use the chicken throughout the week for soups, pizzas, chicken salad, stir-fry, etc.

Instant Pot and Crock Pot

The time-saver of all time-savers! I love the fact that I can throw something in the Crock Pot when I leave in the mornings and the house is filled with the amazing smell of dinner when I return. We have plenty of good recipes on TMoM in our recipe section.

RESTAURANTS WITH FAMILY MEALS

Discovering restaurants with convenient family meals near me can be a lifesaver for busy parents. Whether it’s a chaotic weekday evening or a laid-back weekend, grabbing family-style meals to go can make dinner a breeze. Not Too Old To Learn New Tricks

Fear – the dictionary defines it in several ways – foreboding, dread, dismay, terror, fright, panic, horror, concern, anxiety and apprehension among others. These defining words apply to the most common reasons people fear something. Other types of fear are those described as anxiety disorders ending in the word phobia, characterized by a fear of a specific object, activity or situation. Arachnophobia, the fear of spiders; Ophidiophobia, fear of snakes; Acrophobia, fear of heights; and Glossophobia, fear of public speaking – are just a few of the many phobias that people suffer from or confront.

I wasn’t aware of my mother’s acrophobia until we went to the World’s Fair and took in the IBM exhibit. Being enclosed in a large egg-shaped structure, sitting high up with rows and rows of small benches, feeling like if you moved you would fall, and knowing you couldn’t leave until it was over, was a lot to take. My mom did her best to stay calm, but it was obvious by how tight she was holding my hand that she was frightened. Remembering it years later, I was surprised that she got through it without having a panic attack.

I can’t recall what triggered my first experience of acrophobia, but there have been several incidents throughout the years. I have been told that my fear is not of heights but of falling. I agree with that opinion. I can climb up to the top row of a stadium, but my fear sets in when I turn around and see how far I could fall. I see people bounding up the steps, not even holding onto the hand rail and wonder how they could do it so easily.

So, why is this article titled “Not Too Old to Learn New Tricks”? On our recent trip to Disney World, I watched our grandchildren go on rides I couldn’t imagine going on at their ages. A ride one of our granddaughters went on and loved when she was four, she wouldn’t go on again until this year. Not sure what changed; maybe she faced her fear and overcame it. It gave me pause.

For a few years, I had toyed with going on the Wild Africa Trek at Disney World. It is something you have to reserve in advance. In reading about what it entails, you have to walk several paths, and at one point, you have to cross two swinging bridges. I was led to believe they weren’t that high up. As it was a surprise Christmas gift from my husband, I knew I had to go. It was wonderful. My husband and I were having a great time, and then we got to the bridges. They were up quite high, the first being over the hippo pond, the second over the crocodiles. I watched as others crossed, and it was time to face my fear – after all, it was Disney World, it had to be safe. I moved slowly at first, but I got faster as my courage outweighed my fear. The second bridge I got across quicker, although still not a speed demon. No matter, I had done it.

There was only one ride left that I had refused to go on. I learned even my six-year-old grandson had gone on it, but it was too late for me to change my mind. On our way home, I told my husband that we needed to go back for just a day, so I could go on Tron. He told me it would still be there on our next family trip. True, but will I be able to face my fear again? I’ll be an even older dog then.

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective

How One Question Defines Us

I was thinking about two things recently, graduation season approaching and a good friend who lost his longtime job. I realized these two completely different scenarios shared a common concern – confronting life’s most frequent query.

You’re at a party, mingling with friends and “new acquaintances,” and someone inevitably asks, “So, what do you do?” Suddenly, you feel the spotlight on you. Depending on your age, the reaction can vary. In your early 20s, this question can stir up a cocktail of emotions – excitement, anxiety, pride and perhaps a touch of dread.

Those fresh out of college might feel a combination of exhilaration and pressure. You’ve just spent years studying, likely racked up some student debt and now you’re expected to have a stellar job that makes it all worthwhile. But, let’s be real, very few people land a dream job right out of the gate. You might be working in a temporary position or in a role that doesn’t exactly match your degree, and that’s perfectly okay. The average person holds around 12 jobs throughout his or her lifetime.

The scrutiny might feel even more intense for those who chose a different direction. It’s as if you’re constantly being judged for not following the so-called “traditional” path. But, here’s the thing – success doesn’t require a diploma. Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates are famous examples. The key is to focus on your strengths and passions and keep pushing forward. Nevertheless, this question can be a rollercoaster. You might feel inadequate if you’re not where you thought you’d be by now. Social media doesn’t help either, with its endless stream of highlight reels showing your peers landing amazing jobs, traveling the world and living seemingly perfect lives. But, here’s a reminder – what you see online is often a curated version of reality. Everyone has their struggles and setbacks; no one is immune.

As for those in their 30s and 40s, by this point, you’ve likely settled into a career, so the question “What do you do?” might evoke a different set of emotions.

Perhaps, you started with big dreams and high hopes, however, reality steered you towards a job that pays the bills but doesn’t necessarily ignite your passion. Then, there are life’s tests – family responsibilities, financial pressures and unexpected opportunities – that often shape our career paths in ways we could’ve never predicted.

Emotionally, this stage of life can be challenging. Our society places so much importance on professional achievements. Therefore, we often equate our self worth with our job title which can be a heavy burden to carry. But, it’s important to remember that your worth isn’t tied to your profession. As Brené Brown, author and researcher, reminds us, “Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.”

For those in their 50s and 60s, this question can induce a mixed bag of feelings from pride to reflection, nostalgia and sometimes even a twinge of regret.

By this stage in life, your proficiency is maximized and your profession becomes a significant part of your identity after decades spent honing your skills, building a career and amassing a wealth of experience and knowledge. This can be a source of immense pride and accomplishment. However, societal expectations can add a layer of pressure. There’s often an unspoken assumption that, by this age, you should have “made it” in your career. This can be daunting, especially if you feel you haven’t achieved all that you set out to do. Few ever do. However, it’s possible to find fulfillment and purpose at any stage of life. As Carl Jung, the renowned psychiatrist, once said, “Life really begins at 40. Up until then, you are just doing research.” This perspective highlights the ongoing journey of self discovery and growth that continues throughout our lives. It’s comforting to realize that every

stage of life brings new opportunities and experiences.

So, how can we improve the way we perceive and define people based on their answers to this question? First, let’s start by emphasizing individuality. Encourage conversations that go beyond job titles. Inquire about hobbies, interests and personal achievements. This way, we can get a more comprehensive understanding of the person. By approaching the question with sensitivity and openness, we encourage more heartening and enriching conversations.

Finally, how do you handle this question personally, when asked, without feeling uncomfortable? Start by owning your journey. Whether you’re happily content, still figuring things out or taking a different path, be proud of who and where you are, and embrace the uncertainty and the possibilities that come with it. Remember, you’re thinking about this far more than they are, so don’t spend too much energy on it.

Maya Angelou said it best, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
