On a daily basis, Catie Jarvis celebrates finding her passion and turning it into a dream job. As a female business owner in a heavily male-dominated industry, Catie is embracing the journey while relying on lessons learned early from her parents.

“I was exposed firsthand to entrepreneurship and work ethic that has definitely influenced my ambitious drive for life,” she shares.

As an avid multi-sport athlete, Catie boasts a deep drive to succeed on her own, so hard work is a way of life. While she’s been in the cabinetry business since 2019, Catie went into business for herself only this year.

“I have a creative side, and I prefer to be hands on. The cabinet industry seemed like something that could satisfy my desire to work with my hands while also being creative,” she shares.

Her Passion is Your Next Project

Catie is quickly gathering loyal clients around the Triad and thrives on customers being happy. If it’s something she puts her name on, you know what you’ll be getting!

It’s a busy season, as fall is a common time for folks to plan kitchen remodels with the goal of an updated kitchen that’s ready for holiday entertaining. When she’s meeting with potential clients, Catie starts by determining their ultimate vision – do they prefer a modern or traditional aesthetic? Are there specific functional requirements they require in their cabinetry? It’s important to know if storage is a concern – how they plan to use the space – and, of course, an idea of budget!

With an eye on trends, Catie says white cabinets are still a classic, timeless choice and make the kitchen feel more spacious. “White cabinetry with natural wood tones is also a sought-after option,” Catie adds. “When used on the island or base cabinets, natural wood adds visual weight and elegance to a timeless white kitchen.”

EMORY, photos by MEGAN SMITH PHOTOGRAPHY

But, adventurous color choices are also popular! “Light blues and greens are a good choice for more moody vibes, paired with a warm-toned gold or brass hardware that creates a nice complement to the cool, neutral tones of these cabinetry color options,” says Catie.

She’s seeing bold colors and patterns for backsplashes, and also for increasingly popular glass tiles (which are surfacing more in varied shapes such as hexagon and penny tiles – quite a modern look). And, yes, subway tile is still in style! For kitchen and bath remodels, quartz and granite are still the most popular, and durable, while lighter countertops are trending as they really open up the space!

“Ultimately, is your dream look one of sophistication and elegance, cool and calm, or something more modern and sleek? We want to achieve your desired vibe and will find a color that aligns with your vision. If the cabinetry color is the only thing changing in the kitchen, we make sure we coordinate the new shade with existing elements in the kitchen,” she adds.

Always focusing on quality, Catie offers a refinishing process that involves a commercial grade spray finish, producing an impeccable factory smooth look. And, striving to build strong client relationships based on her conscientious efforts means everything to Catie. “I have a passion for making people happy while maintaining a reputation of excellence in this industry,” she adds.

Clearly, her clients agree!

Reach Catie Jarvis at 336.909.8485, or email her at catiedoescabinets@gmail.com to discuss your next home project, and follow Catie Does Cabinets on Facebook and Instagram for updates and images of some beautiful installations!

“Catie’s work is AMAZING! We recently completed some upgrades on a house we purchased last summer, and one of our projects consisted of adding built-ins in our living room. When it came time to sand and paint them, we wanted a professional cabinet painter who could apply a smooth and flawless, yet durable finish. Our

contractor recommended Catie, and we’re so glad he did! Her knowledge and skills were apparent upon our initial consultation, and her infectious personality is a bonus! She and Tony were efficient, neat and respectful of our home throughout the process. We couldn’t be more pleased! Thank you, Catie and Tony!” ~ Kerry M.

“I purchased a house that needed a kitchen update – cabinets, backsplash, countertops and hardware. Catie refinished the cabinets in the house, and the job was very well done. Not only did she do beautiful work, but her communication was on point and she was honest and realistic with the timeline, as well.” ~ Larissa N.

4Easy & Delicious

Crockpot Recipes

BACON RANCH CHICKEN

I love that this recipe is not only easy, but only requires five ingredients.

• Riega® Ranch Chicken Seasoning (available at Walmart, Harris Teeter, Fresh Market, Lowe’s Food or Amazon)

• 2 pounds chicken tenderloins

• 16 ounces of cream cheese

• 8 slices of cooked and crumbled bacon

• 1 cup of shredded cheese

While this one does require a few steps, it’s still so easy to make.

1. Place tenderloins in Crockpot (spray with cooking oil) and place a strip of cream cheese on each piece of chicken.

2. Sprinkle the seasoning packet over everything.

3. Cook on low for 7 hours, and stir it occasionally.

4. After 7 hours, shred chicken, then place crumbled bacon and shredded cheese over the chicken and stir everything together.

5. Cook on low for 10 minutes, and then do a final stir.

My family loves this dish, and it’s great to serve in many ways to mix it up. You can serve it alone with sides, on a bun, on top of rice with avocado or in a wrap.

Prepare a hit party appetizer and a family favorite dinner option with these easy recipes!

Whether you are looking for a simple option for meals or a great appetizer for a party, a Crockpot is a great kitchen appliance for either! It’s clearly a staple as this brand of slow cooker has been around since the 1970s!

Here are some of my family’s favorite dishes made from a Crockpot. I’m guessing most of these would be doable in any type of slow cooker if you don’t specifically have a Crockpot.

POT ROAST

This is a classic meal option. I love that I can throw it all together in the morning for dinner that evening – and, bonus, it makes the house smell delicious!

For this recipe, you can change out veggies or seasonings to ones you prefer, but below is what I put in.

• 1 cup of water

• Spices – I use oregano, basil, mustard seed, garlic powder and celery salt. Another great option to add is an onion soup mix packet

• Chuck roast or preferred cut of meat

• Carrots – I’ve found the baby carrots work best since they don’t require dicing, so saves me a little time

• White onion

• Red potatoes

• Celery

Simply throw everything in the Crockpot, and put it on low for 6 to 8 hours. Or you can also start it later and put on a higher heat for less time. If you go this route, be sure to cut up the meat to cook faster.

CHEESE DIP

I’ve had lots of cheese dips, but this one that my first college roommate always made has remained my favorite over the years. It’s great for parties or for dinner on taco night!

This one only has three ingredients.

• Block of Velveeta cheese

• Block of Monterey jack cheese

• Can of Rotel (undrained)

Simply mix everything together and cook on high for 2-3 hours or until it’s all melted. I love it with tortilla chips, but it’s also good with veggies!

BACON WRAPPED LIL’ SMOKIES

While we love all these recipes here, this is probably my family’s favorite. It’s so simple and tastes so good! I originally made it for a party, but we liked it so much, I often add it into a dinner as an app or the protein.

This one only requires four ingredients.

• 1 pack of bacon

• 1 ¾ cups of brown sugar

• ½ T of paprika

• 1 pack of lil’ smokies (we like to use the cheddar ones for a bonus flavor burst)

Like the other recipes here, this is another easy one to make!

1. Slice the bacon, wrap around the lil’ smokies and secure with a toothpick.

2. Mix the brown sugar and paprika.

3. Pour 1 cup of that mixture on the bottom of the Crockpot.

4. On top of the mixture place all the bacon wrapped lil’ smokies.

5. Sprinkle the remaining mixture on top.

6. Cook on high for three hours, stirring occasionally.

These bite-sized treats pair well with almost any form of potato or party spread!

Spicy Chicken Sandwiches

For the LOVE of

SPONSORED BY CASUAL FURNITURE WORLD

Pit Master Tip:

You can substitute chicken breasts in this recipe if you want; the reason I use thighs is because they are harder to dry out and they have much more flavor. Also, if you choose, you can roast the jalapeños that were in the marinade to use on your sandwich as well.

Spicy and delicious! You are going to love these sandwiches!

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 1 hour

Yields: 4-5 Sandwiches

Ingredients:

5-6 boneless skinless chicken thighs

1 can of La Costena pickled jalapeños and carrots

3 T of Spanish rub

1 stick of salted butter

1 cup hot sauce

5-6 slices American cheese

This is a recipe that has gone viral online. I was shocked at how much flavor they had. I changed up the recipe a bit for some extra flavor. First, trim as much of the excess fat from the chicken thighs as you can. Use a can of La Costena pickled jalapeño and carrots as your marinade, and pour the can into a gallon Ziploc bag. Marinate your chicken for 24 hours. Pull your chicken out the next day and season in your favorite Spanish rub. I used Lanes BBQ Fiesta seasoning on these. You can smoke these or do them hot and fast on the charcoal grill. Cook your chicken until an internal temperature of 165 degrees. While your chicken is cooking, get a cast iron pan and melt a stick of butter and a cup of your favorite hot sauce together. Let that melt, and baste your chicken. Melt a slice of American cheese on each piece of chicken. Use a brioche bun and add Duke’s Mayo to toast it up on the grill. Assemble your sandwich and enjoy!

These Ideas Will Help You Host a Haunted Party That Guests Will Always Remember PARTY Like a Rockstar Halloween Party

Halloween is one of the best holidays to throw a party! Whether you host a family friendly gathering or an adults-only soiree, there are so many cool and festive ideas to try out. The fact that there are so many Halloween movies should be your first tip that you’ll have lots of inspiration to throw this type of party.

Below are a few ideas to throw a spectacular and memorable Halloween bash this year that your friends and family will talk about well into the new year!

SPOOKY SNACK IDEAS

Like many other holiday parties, the best part is often the food. One wonderful thing about Halloween is you can turn normal staple party foods easily into “haunted” goodies. A few simple ideas to get you started are:

• Pigs-in-a-blanket morphed into Mummy Dogs

• String cheese (a staple kids’ party food) can turn into fingers when you add a slivered almond slice

• Turn Oreo cookies into spiders by adding red hots as eyes and red licorice as legs

• Cut slices of cheddar cheese with pumpkin cutters and put them on burgers if grilling out

If you love charcuterie, there are also so many fun boards to try for Halloween or fall in general, such as a caramel apple board. Simply cut up apples, melt some caramel, then put out delicious toppings. I’ve also seen a few different ways to utilize meat, cheese, veggies and fruits to look like the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus.

THRILLING ENTERTAINMENT

In addition to the many food ideas for Halloween parties, there is also an abundance of entertainment options to consider.

First, you can make an extensive playlist of Halloween themed songs to set the mood. Don’t forget classics like “Thriller,” “Monster Mash,” “Ghostbusters” and “I Put a Spell on You.” Regardless of the age of partygoers, there are festive songs available for all ages!

There are also lots of fun game ideas for Halloween parties. Many tend to center around the main food of the season…pumpkins – like pumpkin toss or pumpkin bowling.

If you want to go all out, you can create a haunted house in a room or backyard. You can keep it simple with some dark areas with decorations and pop-up skeletons or more elaborate with live people helping you to pull off some scares.

When in doubt, if the party needs livening up, pull a 13 Going on 30 move and get everyone to dance to “Thriller!”

GET DRESSED FOR THE HOLIDAY

Outside of themed parties, which can get expensive, Halloween parties are the one time it’s not only okay but encouraged to wear costumes. I mean – who doesn’t love a good costume party? If this is a family friendly party, remember to keep in mind – and ask your guests to do the same – to keep the costumes appropriate, as many Halloween costumes lean towards either too scary or inappropriate.

FALL DECOR DOUBLES AS PARTY DECORATIONS

Another great thing about Halloween parties is that all the amazing fall decorations you have up in your house can also double as party decor. So, don’t feel like you need to go out and spend a ton of money on party decorations. Simply add in a few Halloween plates and napkins, maybe some fake spiderwebs and you are set!

Embrace all Halloween has to offer when it comes to parties and throw a fiesta that is one for the books. No matter who you plan to invite, kids or adults, at any time of day, you can utilize any of these ideas for a fun time for all!

HOME IS WHERE THE WORKOUT IS

Building Strong Families at Washington Park CrossFit

While there are many definitions of home, there’s none better than home is the space where you can be your truest self!

Owners Gavin Culler, Brooke Eagle and Scott Tyler opened Washington Park CrossFit in October of 2022, with a love for fitness and the dream of building camaraderie within their workout community. Mission accomplished – as the current member tally is 120, and enthusiasm for the Winston-Salem gym grows stronger and brighter every day!

“Nothing makes my heart happier than seeing our members bond with one another and spend time hanging out – both in and out of the gym,” shares Brooke. “As an adult, it can be hard to make friends, and I love that we're creating a safe space for like-minded individuals. We all have CrossFit in common – but we also have such a diverse group of members (age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, skill levels and language).”

These days, you might happen upon a group of members playing pickleball on Monday nights, or heading to Easy Tiger beer garden down the street for a post WOD (“workout of the day”) beverage. Enjoying brunch at Acadia Foods across the street after morning classes is a common treat, and there are tons of community events throughout the year, including a school supply drive for the Educator Warehouse, AARF fundraiser, the annual “Friendsgiving” and the immensely popular “hot girl hour” program – a six-week program for ladies to try out CrossFit in a stress-free, all-female format.

Spend a few minutes chatting with some “mom” members of Washington Park CrossFit – who happen to be sharing our

cover this month with their adorable offspring – and you’ll immediately feel that unmistakable sense of belonging. Finding a second family at Washington Park CrossFit has been a special blessing to members Emma and Tyler Weddington, Amanda and Carl Teachey, and Lisa Sun and Adam Wells, who have all found joy in introducing fitness to their young children and being able to share family time during their personal workouts.

“Adam and I wouldn't be able to participate if the gym wasn't a family affair,” shares Lisa Sun. “For parents, there's often a sense of guilt when you're not doing something for your child and, as working parents, there are only a few hours between getting home and your child's bedtime. Both our mental and physical health would suffer without our gym. It's a family affair because we are all able to be here – including our son, Max!”

Lisa had been doing CrossFit for a few years, but joined the Washington Park gym on day one, drawn to its ideal location amid historical homes and its community focus. She loves that members’ kids play with each other and want to mimic their parents.

“They swing on the rings and try to do handstands, literally anything they see us do. It’s fun to see their sense of play and exploration in the gym. Everyone here is supportive while also having a good time. We egg each other on and commiserate with each other after a tough day – I love my gym family!”

Emma Weddington, her husband, Tyler, and their son, Nash, recently moved here from Arizona and instantly became part of the WPCF family.

“The community at the gym is like no other,” shares Emma. “I have been a member of many CrossFit gyms over the years, and the moment I dropped in on my first class, I knew this was our new fitness home. What sets it apart is not only the coaches being excited and happy to meet us, but also our fellow class members. They got to know my family, and now all our kids are playing together and asking about each other outside the gym which really makes me happy!”

Emma and Tyler are thankful they can bring Nash along to the gym.

“He gets to watch us work out together and is now mimicking our movements at home, making us proud! Tyler and I were both athletes growing up, so fitness has become a passion. It would be an honor to watch my son find that passion for a sport or fitness and go all in! I think it’s important to show Nash that the gym is a safe space for everyone and that it’s okay to have good days, bad days, show emotions, be competitive and show up for yourself, which builds so much confidence internally. The CrossFit culture is all about community – so for our gym to support the family unit and want us to succeed is important. Coaching is top-tier and very hands-on, and it’s gratifying to see money being put back into the gym, whether it’s cosmetic upgrades or new toys for the members!”

Amanda Teachey, her husband Carl, and daughter, Maris, are original Washington Park CrossFit members

“I joined Washington Park about six months ago and have been pleased with that decision every day. The coaching staff is knowledgeable and down-to-earth. The environment is friendly, and the space is clean and tidy (this really matters to me). Perhaps the most distinctive quality of the gym is the space for women to thrive and excel in their fitness goals. This is a place that has achieved the right balance of warmth and challenge.”

and were excited to see WPCF preparing to open, after relying on garage workouts at home during the pandemic.

“As a young couple starting a family, we were looking for a gym, but also for a social outlet,” Amanda explains. “Since the gym was building a new membership from scratch, everyone came from varying fitness method backgrounds and all phases of life. I think that led to a diverse membership that organically created their own community from the start!”

Amanda and Carl quickly recognized that WPCF is willing to meet you where you are as an athlete – but will also encourage members to push past their comfort zones.

“Members support one another, motivate each other and hold each other accountable, but there’s also a competitive spirit sprinkled in there that keeps things interesting!” she adds. But, the family factor sealed the deal for Amanda and Carl.

“Bringing our daughter with us was a non-negotiable, so Carl and I were hoping for a gym that would tolerate a toddler (now preschooler) and have been extremely lucky to find a community that has truly embraced her being there. Our gym family has definitely become ours (and her) extended family! Especially having a daughter, I want her to be exposed to strong, powerful women, and appreciate her body and what it’s capable of. Maris has so many amazing role models to look up to at the gym!”

All three moms agree on the importance of teaching their children to prioritize physical and mental wellness and want their young family members to see that fitness ultimately brings people together.

Brooke says the staff welcomes members to bring their children to the gym as long as they are able to entertain themselves while their parents exercise.

“Our ‘cover models’ have both parents as members, so if both work out, bringing children along is the only option. These kids do great – they have an enclosed playpen with toys to keep them occupied – plus they are used to being at the gym.” What a positive sign for the future!

3 Lesser-Known Milestones As You Enter Retirement Making Dollars, Making $ense

As you may already be aware, the earliest someone can begin drawing Social Security benefits is at age 62. As you enter the red zone for retirement or perhaps are already retired, I want to share three less common retirement age milestones that are important pieces of your overall financial plan.

The first of these is the age of 50. Once you turn 50, the IRS currently allows you to make yearly “catch-up contributions.” These are additional amounts you can contribute to your 401(k) s and IRAs above and beyond the standard annual limits for people under the age of 50. This benefit is designed to help you save additional money for retirement. Not enough pre-retirees take advantage of this, perhaps because they are unaware that they are allowed to.

The next milestone occurs at age 65. Most Americans qualify for Medicare at this age, which covers a sizable portion of doctor visits, hospital care and other medical services. However, navigating the enrollment and benefits for each part can be cumbersome, so consider seeking guidance from a healthcare or Medicare specialist.

The last milestone I want to share with you is at age 73. This is when you enter the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) stage. One of the benefits of contributing to 401(k)s and IRAs during your working years is that it lowers your taxable income, therefore, it lessens your tax burden. However, you are not allowed to keep growing your retirement savings tax-free forever. The government eventually wants to tax it. Per the current IRS guidelines, you will have to start taking portions of money from your retirement funds by no later than age 73 and pay taxes on those distributions.

These are just a few ages that contain important planning components of which you might not be aware. At the end of the day, you do not know what you do not know, and learning things that you were not aware of can enhance your savings and goals and keep your financial plan on track.

“I will always trust Weeks Flooring with my projects. The crews were expert, diligent and cared about achieving excellent results. They were all also very polite! Having a continued mess for a month, consisting of two complicated phases of installation, was stressful, but the crews did what they could to make it as easy as possible. They cared about getting the same color of flooring upstairs as I had downstairs, despite the challenge of varying light levels in the different spaces. I hope to have Weeks Flooring return next year to complete another project for me.”

Imprints Cares Launches Capital Campaign, Completes New Building

Imprints Cares, a local nonprofit organization nurturing children, strengthening families and building community by providing multiple programs in the spaces of education and health equity, has announced the public phase of its capital campaign and completion of its fully renovated, 21,000-square-foot headquarters, the Helen and Woody Clinard Center for Thriving Families. The facility is located at 711 Coliseum Plaza Court in WinstonSalem in the former DataMax building.

Imprints Cares serves children and families from before birth until the completion of middle school and provides a variety of supportive programming focused on everything from home visitation during pregnancy and infancy to before and after school care, parenting programs to summer enrichment camps and an inclusion program.

The capital campaign, with a comprehensive goal of $5.5 million, will cover the purchase cost and renovations of the new building and also supplement several of the programmatic needs of the organization.

The move to Imprints Cares’ new headquarters has recently been completed, with the official ribbon cutting ceremony taking place on Thursday, October 17th at 11:00 a.m. In addition, Imprints Cares and its neighbors in Coliseum Park Plaza will welcome visitors during a Community Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, October 19th from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The public phase of the capital campaign and building opening coincide with Imprints Cares’ 55th birthday, which took place on September 15th.

“The Helen and Woody Clinard Center for Thriving Families is a great achievement for Imprints Cares and a true asset to the community,” said Executive Director of Imprints Cares Claudia Barrett.

“We are equally excited to launch the public phase of our capital campaign and look forward to crossing the finish line on our $5.5 million goal which connotes the 55 years that we have been serving children and families in the community,” she added. “It is a truly exciting time for our organization, and we cannot wait to see what the next 55 years bring.”

Boutique Style That’s Easy to Love GRETCHEN’S TREASURE CHEST

Like all “girl moms,” Michele Mathias delighted in filling her daughter, Gretchen’s closet with adorable outfit options!

“When Gretchen was a baby, I loved dressing her in all the cute outfits I could find,” shares the Davie County native. “But the outfits from big box stores did not hold up very well and, after a few washes, looked old and worn out. I started searching for better quality and found several boutiques online that had the cute, everyday outfits I wanted.”

It turns out those held up quite well, and once Gretchen outgrew them, Michele took those clothes to a local consignment store where they would sell quickly – sometimes the same day she brought them in.

“People were soon asking where I found these outfits,” says Michele. “Once Gretchen started kindergarten, my husband, John, and I discussed opening a store.”

With a degree in business administration from High Point University, Michele worked in textiles, retail and management before taking a break from the workforce when Gretchen was born. But, the time was right for a new adventure and, after searching available spaces, she and John decided Harper Hill Commons Shopping Center was a perfect location.

Since their grand opening last March, Michele has been focused on scouting boutique outfits at affordable prices, and merchandise for the store is carefully chosen.

“I ask myself: Is this practical? Is it something a parent would want to dress their child in? I look for something that both children and parents will love while also keeping it affordable. Even though it may cost a little more than the big box store items, these outfits are better quality and last longer,” she explains. “A bonus is that most of the brands I carry are small batch, meaning usually only around a thousand pieces of each print is made. Some are exclusive designs, so unlike mass-produced items, you won’t find them everywhere. I carry different brands than the other children’s boutiques in Winston-Salem, but I don’t see it as competing with other stores. I see it as supporting small businesses!”

Michele also loves that most brands she carries are mom-owned, and some of her brands “give back” with every purchase.

“Charlie’s Project gives back to charities who help with autism because the owner’s son, Charlie, is autistic. Most of their clothing is made from bamboo – soft, comfortable, breathable and best of all, tagless. That’s perfect for children with sensory issues or kids that don’t like itchy tags! I also carry a large selection of high-quality bamboo blankets, great for the cooler weather.”

The shop also carries a popular line of hair bows – handmade by a mom in Texas – and North Carolina-based products including candles, bath bombs and jewelry for both moms and daughters. There’s also a “kids’ corner” where children can color and play while moms (or dads) shop.

Shopping on the website is easy, and Michele plans to release one collection each month that will be available in-store at least two weeks before it’s available online. She also offers a rewards program where every purchase earns points towards discounts. Follow @gretchenstreasurechest on Instagram, and you might see an invitation to have your child (sizes newborn to youth size 16, boys and girls) model for the boutique. Come by the shop for more details!

Gretchen, by the way, is now an eight-year-old second grader at Meadowlark Elementary School.

“I would say Gretchen approves of 95% of the styles in the shop,” says Michele. “The other 5% is not Gretchen-approved, but Mom-overruled!”

It seems Gretchen is a little fashionista in her own right!

Visit Gretchen’s Treasure Chest in Harper Hill Commons Shopping Center, 4916 Old Country Club Road in Winston-Salem, 336.306.9930. Boutique hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Sign up for emails at gretchenstreasurechest.com to stay up-to-date on new collections, and follow the boutique on Facebook and Instagram @ gretchenstreasurechest.

Fall is here, and it’s time to embrace all the Triad has to offer families! One hidden gem in Forsyth County that embodies fall family fun is Smith Hollow Farm. Our family loved visiting for the first time last year, and it will absolutely become an annual tradition to visit.

It’s a great place to spend a couple of hours or all day! There is so much to do for all ages. Read on for more details on what they have and tips to plan your trip there.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY

They have a robust range of activities for all ages. Some of the offerings include:

• Horse rides

• Corn maze

• Pumpkin patch

• Two fire pits

• Apple chukin’ slingshot

• Archery

• Outdoor games, like volleyball, horseshoes and tic tac toe

• Animals, including cows, sheep and chickens

• Bouncy animals for little ones

• Tractor and fire truck train rides

These are merely some of the many things to do on the farm. When you first walk in, they have a map that details every single thing to do there. We took a photo of it on our phones and made sure to hit all the activities that worked best for our family.

GORGEOUS AUTUMN VIEWS

In addition to the extensive things to do, there are so many gorgeous spots with great views here. There are tons of photo opportunities. All the trees show off the many colors with their leaves changing at this farm.

TIPS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DAY

First, everything is outdoors, so plan accordingly when it comes to attire. You are not allowed to bring in outside food, but they do have concessions and picnic tables to enjoy food there.

There are two parts, the lower farm and the upper farm. The path that connects those two is a bit of the hill and beyond that the paths are bumpier. So, while it is technically strolleraccessible, it gets a little rough! If you have a sling for babies, then that is highly recommended over a stroller.

Those under two years old are free, but all others are charged the same $17 per person admission. They accept cash and credit/debit cards but do not have an ATM onsite. Most of their activities are included, so it’s well worth the cost. A few extras you can purchase there include concessions, horse rides, pumpkins and fire engine train rides.

When nagging orthopedic pain or an unexpected sports injury starts to weigh down your everyday mobility, finding the most advanced care possible is an absolute must!

With Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, your care team consists of board-certified orthopedic surgeons who prioritize getting you back to what you love. If your issue involves the hand or upper extremities, their skilled hand surgeons work with therapists, athletic trainers and medical assistants to put together a personalized treatment plan.

Dr. Walter “Hal” Wray brings 16 years of experience to the practice in Clemmons, handling procedures in the outpatient surgical center, but offering many treatments right in the office. Dr. Wray often performs in-office carpal tunnel releases, trigger finger releases and smaller hand procedures.

“This is always a benefit to patients who can drive themselves, don’t have to fast beforehand or change medication schedules, such as blood thinners,” Dr. Wray explains. “It’s also typically less costly and avoids the risks of anesthesia.”

Originally from the area, Dr. Wray grew up in Clemmons, graduated from West Forsyth High School and attended UNC-Chapel Hill for undergraduate studies before heading to Bowman Gray medical school, interning and doing his residency at Duke and a hand fellowship at the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center.

He enjoys that the field of hand surgery is constantly changing.

“I love that hand surgery is really a mix of skills – some orthopedics, some plastic, some vascular and even neuro, if nerves in the hand need repair,” he adds.

“I was inspired by my dad who was a family practice physician here in Clemmons for 40 years,” shares Dr. Wray. “I love this community and hope to practice here for a long time to come.”

Healing for the Active Life You Deserve

What does he feel sets Novant Health Orthopedics & Sports Medicine apart? “We love what we do!”

With 11 years of experience, Dr. Derek Bernstein sees patients in the practice’s Winston-Salem office, where he performs surgical procedures at Medical Park Hospital, as well as at the Novant Health Orthopedics outpatient surgical center.

“I fell in love with orthopedics in medical school,” shares Dr. Bernstein. “One of the most important goals of orthopedic care is returning people to function which is particularly important with the elderly population because restoring function allows for a better quality of life, the ability to maintain functional independence and slows down the aging process so to speak. With both operative and non-operative procedures, I love helping patients get back to their daily activities. With degenerative issues such as osteoarthritis, I consider, if this was my mother’s hand, what would I want done?”

Following medical school at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Bernstein completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Houston Methodist, Texas Medical Center and a fellowship in Hand & Upper Extremity Surgery at the Philadelphia Hand Center. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Dr. Bernstein was the first of his siblings to come to Wake Forest University, but the others soon followed suit!

When asked what sets the Novant Health Orthopedics team apart, Dr. Bernstein highlights their multidisciplinary approach to care.

“Specifically within the hand surgery program, we have two fellowship-trained hand surgeons from top institutions and a robust team of three very experienced physician assistants who not only see patients in the office, but also assist in surgery. Hand therapy is also a critical component of treatment, and we have 4 CHTs (Certified Hand Therapists) that practice in Winston-Salem, Clemmons and Kernersville. These are therapists who start from either

the occupational or physical discipline and obtain additional training and certification specifically in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation.”

Dr. Bernstein is also trained in endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery, performing hundreds of these surgeries a year.

“Patients can sometimes be hesitant to address carpal tunnel syndrome because they have busy lives and worry about an extended recovery period,” he says. “While everyone recovers differently, if you feel comfortable after your endoscopic surgery, I will allow you to go back to your activities as soon as the next day.”

For example, Dr. Bernstein recently performed the procedure on a mother of two, who had surgery on both hands, six days apart. Both times, she returned to her demanding skilled job the next day. Another patient had both wrists treated over the Christmas holiday – and was back on the golf course within days.

Themagic of fall is upon us, and there’s nothing quite like snuggling with your favorite person or four-legged friend once the temperatures take a cooler turn. If you’re re-thinking your home fireplace setting this season, stop by Casual Furniture World in Winston-Salem!

Every element of their inviting showroom makes shopping a pleasure, and it’s always a plus to view gas logs, wood stoves and electric fireplaces in person before choosing what’s right for your home. At Casual Furniture World, you’ll find the largest display of gas logs and fireplaces in the Triad – along with videos set up to educate customers on easy and safe operation.

“These purchases are usually a two-part process,” explains Winston-Salem Store Manager Ken Smith. “Most people don’t know exactly what they already have – and what they might be looking to replace. There are so many code restrictions involved in navigating these products. Clients may first come in and browse the options and then we put together a measure sheet to send home with them to gather more details.”

Determine what best fits your space and decide if you want to achieve actual heating or if aesthetics is more your goal. Then, think of Casual Furniture World as your one-stop shopping destination, as they will also do estimates for gas line installations and complete yearly inspections on your fireplace purchases. Yearly inspections by seasoned Casual Furniture World technicians typically start in September, and service requests can be conveniently completed online.

“We recommend a routine check-up for your gas logs once a year,” says Ken. “Servicing gas logs is like servicing your car – proper upkeep will keep these products lasting much longer! If well cared for, gas logs and fireplaces can last for many years.”

The team is definitely noticing that customers are focusing on efficiency, and they can offer you expert advice on choosing between vented or vent-free gas log sets to create a warm, inviting space. The popular Carolina Campfire vented gas logs set features Radiant Heat technology allowing you to have the most realistic log set with warmth mirroring that of a real wood fire. The most popular vent-free option is currently the Berkley Oak Refractory cement log set, offering fine detail and hand-painted beauty on each of the seven logs included.

“You’ll find that vented gas logs are typically the most realistic and produce more of a dancing flame, in an orange/yellow shade,” Ken explains. He adds that electric fireplaces are the fastest growing segment in indoor fireplace options and have a much more realistic appearance than in the past. Electric versions are typically selected more for ambiance, not to actually provide heat for your space.

You’ll also find an attractive selection of glass doors to refresh your fireplace set-up, in a variety of colors, right inside the Casual Furniture World showroom! Virtual showroom tours are also available online, delivering an immersive experience that lets you view available choices, while envisioning how to best update your current living space for those wonderful cool days ahead.

Visit Casual Furniture World and meet their professionally trained sales and design team – ready to guide you in making this your coziest fall and winter ever! Their showroom is located at 1500 Hanes Mall Boulevard in WinstonSalem, 336.760.1766 and online at casualfurnitureworld.com. Hours are Monday through Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m – 5:00 p.m. You can also visit their showroom in Myrtle Beach, SC, and follow them on Facebook and Instagram @CasualFurnitureWorld.

An Escape from the Ordinary Carolna Reaisance Festval

Enjoy a touch of fantasy and history at one of the best fall festivals in NC.

I fondly remember attending the Carolina Renaissance Festival as a high school field trip for my arts and humanity class. Even though it was many years ago, everything about the experience is so fun and such a unique experience that it’s impossible to forget. I certainly never imagined then that, years later, I’d enjoy attending the festival with my own family.

Ironically, the spring after that high school visit, the movie “A Knight’s Tale” came out in theaters. If you haven’t seen it, it’s all about jousting and the Renaissance time frame. Plus, it had Heath Ledger before he was the Joker and Paul Bettany before he was Vision. Do yourself a favor, and watch it at least once.

If you have seen the movie, then I’m sure you were wondering while watching it what it was like to live during that time. Well, wonder no longer. Simply visit the Carolina Renaissance Festival this fall, and you’ll get a good idea of entertainment and attire back then.

While many festivals come and go, this one has truly stood the test of time as this year is the 31st annual Carolina Renaissance Festival.

STEP BACK IN TIME

You don’t need a time machine to see what the Renaissance period is like. This festival brings it to life for all its attendees.

It is more than merely a day trip or place of entertainment because it is educational as well. Fun meets learning every day of the festival.

You can easily forget your daily troubles in our fast-paced world and escape to a much simpler time, if only for a day.

As soon as you walk through the gates, you’ll enjoy the magic and myth of the Renaissance.

FUN AT EVERY TURN

The Carolina Renaissance Festival is entertaining for all. There are peoplepowered rides, games of skill, 16 stages with continuous theater and circus shows, and plenty of shopping with more than 140 merchants. Add into the mix comedians, jugglers and acrobats, and there is endless entertainment.

Then, of course, there is my (and many others’) favorite attraction, the Queen’s Tournament Joust! It is spectacular to watch. I mean, where else can you see competitors riding horses and hitting each other with lances in 2024?

When she was a little younger, my oldest daughter’s favorite attraction was the Circus Siren Sea Fairy Mermaids. Clearly, many other kids and kids at heart loved it as it was featured last year in the Netflix documentary series MerPeople

Two new entertainment options this year include Witch Trials! and Princess Sofia & Princess Catalina

Last, but certainly not least, is all the amazing and delicious food. The fan favorite is always the Giant Turkey Leg. However, the recent new addition, the Transylvanian Chimney Cakes, is rising in popularity!

GET READY FOR MAGIC & FUN AT THE CAROLINA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

Are you ready to step back in time to a magical and exciting era in human history? Then, visit the Carolina Renaissance Festival any Saturday or Sunday from October 5th to November 24th. They are open rain or shine 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. those days.

You can find the festival at 16445 Poplar Tent Road, Huntersville, NC 28078. Parking is free!

Building a Strong Family Through Legacy and Identity

What makes your family unique? Every family has its own identity, shaped by the values, traditions and culture that bind you together. We’ve heard the saying that we don’t choose our family; that is true, but God does and He desires for us to create a family legacy that honors Him. It’s important to appreciate and celebrate our family history and discern how to move forward as an impactful unit. Purposeful conversations and planning will tighten a family bond for generations, so let’s talk about how to pave the way.

WORD ASSOCIATION AND LEGACY

It might feel taboo, but getting the family together for unconventional conversations is helpful. A simple conversation starter could be for the whole family to think about what words they want to be associated with the family name. It’s different for each family, but thinking about this can help guide how you live and interact with the world. Do you want your family to be known for kindness, resilience or creativity? Maybe it’s integrity, generosity or a sense of adventure. Whatever it is, defining these core values is a great first step in shaping your family’s identity.

This can lead to talking about a family legacy you want to establish or continue. This is the lasting impact your family will have, both on each other and the world. Could you be the family that always gives back to the community, shares wisdom and integral history, or always lends a helping hand? When you’ve decided, embody those values in your everyday lives, and over time, the collective family will be known for those very things.

BUILDING AND DISMANTLING IDENTITIES

All families have accomplishments to be proud of and sinful patterns they want to eradicate. To preserve the good and prune the undesirable, history must be discussed. Include the young family members so negative history doesn’t repeat itself. Contrary to what some may believe, sharing it all will give them a strong sense of family identity and empower them to make their own choices to contribute to the family story that is still being written. No matter their ages, every family member plays a role and has the insight to share, so make everyone feel included in the process of evolving the family legacy.

KEEP IT LIGHT WITH FAMILY TRADITIONS

As you weave the tougher conversations into family gatherings, there should still be times for celebrations and fun filled occasions. Traditions are a family’s heartbeat. You can create new traditions or honor those passed down through generations. Whether it’s a weekly game night, an annual trip or coming together during the holidays, make sure family gatherings don’t become associated with uncomfortable or tense discussions. There can be a healthy balance of work and play.

Your family is a powerful God-ordained system that can guide you in life’s ups and downs. By embracing your heritage, addressing hardships, having important conversations, instilling strong values and still having fun, you will build a strong identity that leads to an honorable legacy. So, take time to reflect on what makes your family special, involve everyone in the journey and remember that the story you’re writing today will be the one your family treasures for generations to come.

Getting A Puppy After Losing Another:

What Time Is The Best Time?

After losing Bella to kidney failure in January, I swore to everyone I would never be able to get another puppy. Watching life fade out of her big brown eyes was the hardest thing I ever witnessed. This said, it surprised everyone, including myself, when this past June, our family decided to adopt a new black and white Shih Tzu named Bandido.

This decision was not an easy one. Bella’s death left a huge hole in my heart; one that, no matter how busy I was, nothing seemed to fill. After speaking with several friends who had gone through the same thing, I realized there was no correct answer for if we should get another one. Some friends waited weeks before getting a new friend, while others were never able to adopt again.

The first thing that helped me realize a new dog would soon be in our family’s life was how I reacted towards other dogs.

When a pup walked by, I was like a child, bending down and fawning over him or her. Also viewing how much my children desperately missed Bella helped our decision. When we saw how excited they would get around other dogs made me determine that we should be open to adopting a new one soon. While my decision was a personal one, if you are going through the same thing, read on for a few tips that helped me make my final decision.

TIP #1: ALLOW YOURSELF TO GRIEVE. After any type of significant death, it is normal to react rashly. However, these first few weeks are important to the grieving process. These are times when you should allow yourself to lean into the sadness and properly heal. It is completely normal to be sad, angry or lonely for a while. Avoid immediately filling this void with a new dog if you have not processed your feelings over the loss of your last dog. If so, you may end up placing negative feelings onto your new dog or having unreasonable expectations.

TIP #2: REALIZE NO DOG WILL REPLACE YOUR PREVIOUS ONE. This was a difficult yet necessary step for me. I knew that no other dog would ever replace my sassy girl, but I also realized this was a beautiful thing. I began to become excited to meet this new animal and get to know his or her unique personality. While it may be normal at first to compare the new pup to your former one, it is vital not to do this. Remember, every dog is different and will have its own strengths and weaknesses.

TIP #3: CONSIDER EVERYONE – INCLUDING PETS – IN YOUR DECISION. For us, this was an easy step, considering we all were on board. However, when my husband lost his dog, McKensie, a black lab, to stomach cancer in 2019, we decided it would be best to not get another dog, at least immediately. Bella was so devastated over this loss, we had to put her on medication, therefore, we felt getting a brand-new pup would not bode well for her mental health. We also had two little ones under two around the same time, and we did not think we had the bandwidth to sign on for a new pup. Like everything in life, timing is everything with this decision.

TIP #4: REALIZE HOW MUCH LIFE WILL CHANGE WITH A NEW FAMILY MEMBER. Getting a new dog truly is like having a new child. Everything changes. When we finally decided to get a new puppy, I needed to draw out a budget for expenses. We also realized our carefree weekend trips would soon be over. We now had to consider our new friend and if the location was pup friendly.

TIP #5: REALIZE HOW MUCH WORK PUPPIES CAN BE! While I loved Bella, she had developed a few unpleasant habits that I should have gotten under control early on. When we knew that we would be getting a new puppy, my husband and I were quick to sign up for some local puppy obedience classes. A variety of local pet stores offer them, and already, I can vouch for them to be worth every penny. While “Dido” is not perfect, he is already learning many things that are vital towards having a well behaved pooch.

In the end, we are pleased with our decision to invite Dido to our family. While I may always have a hole in my heart, I can attest it is not as big as it was after Bella’s death. And, in a way, I can thank Bella herself for helping play a part in making me realize my heart still had plenty of room for loving another pup.

Child Safety Series

Ghostly Guidance for Trick-or-Treaters of All Ages

Each month, this series will provide important facts and tips surrounding child safety in an effort to support parents and caregivers as they navigate reducing risks and creating the safest environment possible for the children in their lives.

Who’s ready for a little spooky fun? Before you set out trick-or-treating, remind your family that staying safe is your top priority. Halloween is a great time to make memories with your kids, but it’s crucial to be aware of risks. For instance, the National Safety Council notes that children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than any other day. Additionally, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that an average of 3,200 people visit the emergency room due to Halloween-related injuries with 46% being under 18.

So, whether you’re going to be chasing down toddlers all night or letting your high schooler have fun out with friends, we are sharing a breakdown of tips for a safe and happy Halloween!

LITTLE GOBLINS ON-THE-GO: 12 MONTHS+

From first timers to tiny tots with a few years under their belts, Halloween can be more of an adorable photo op than a candy filled adventure, but safety is still crucial.

Costume Safety: Make sure costumes fit comfortably; not too tight, too baggy, overly hot or cold. Avoid masks as these can obstruct vision and breathing; instead, use non-toxic face paint.

Visibility: With nighttime festivities, keep infants and toddlers visible with reflective tape or glow-inthe-dark accessories like glow sticks on bodies or strollers.

Street Safety: Always hold hands and use crosswalks and sidewalks. Stay visible to drivers

by carrying a flashlight or using lighting on your stroller.

Candy Caution: Keep candy out of reach of infants and toddlers to avoid choking hazards and early exposure to processed sugar.

CANDY CRAZED KIDDOS: 5+ YEARS

Elementary school-aged kids are excited to get to that candy and feel a bit independent but still count on supervision to keep them safe.

Adult Supervision: Children need help navigating neighborhoods and a mindful eye to monitor candy intake and unnecessary safety risks.

Costume Considerations: Ensure costumes are visible at night and are an appropriate length to avoid tripping. Before the big night, test any face paints to avoid reactions.

Street Smarts: Teach and remind kids about using crosswalks and looking both ways before crossing streets as well as holding hands of younger family or friends.

Candy Inspection: Always review candy from events and strangers before consumption. Discard unwrapped or suspicious pieces and those that pose allergic reactions or choking hazards.

PRETEEN PUMPKINS: 11+ YEARS

Middle schoolers want to be given more freedom, but their enthusiasm and impulse control just might go head to head on Halloween!

All Together: Encourage groups for trick-or-treating, and set clear boundaries on where they can and cannot go!

Stay Connected: If you won’t be together, equip kids with cell phones or make sure the supervising adult has your number in case of emergency or check in.

Curfew: Set a specific time that your child understands they need to be home or meet you somewhere specific.

Stranger Danger: Reminders can save a life! Talk with your kids about never entering the home or car of someone they don’t know and keeping track of their friends.

TEENAGE TRICKSTERS: 14+ YEARS

While some adults may want to roll their eyes when they think of teens trick-or-treating, why not let them still have their festive fun?

Have a Plan: Ask your teen who they are going with and where they plan to be, so you know in advance.

Driving Safety: Remind driving teens that streets will be filled with younger children, so they should drive slowly and stay alert. Zero texting when driving!

Substance Awareness: Have an open talk with your kids about drugs and alcohol as well as peer pressure to give them added confidence and awareness.

In Case of Emergency: Have emergency contacts saved in their phone and remind them you are their safe space if something goes wrong.

Above all, have a plan for how you’ll celebrate Halloween this year and prepare your kids of every age on how to be safe and have fun!

A Flavorful Classic to Celebrate Your Next Event

Since 1991, Little Richard’s has been the much-loved first name in barbecue in the Winston-Salem area, sharing the deliciousness of recipes passed down through generations of connoisseurs at this family owned local treasure.

The bustling – and newest – Stratford Road location, along with smaller destinations in Clemmons, Yadkinville, Mt. Airy and Walkertown, are all operated by members of the first and second generations of the Karagiorgis family. You’ll feel comfortably at home at each restaurant, and the Winston-Salem location – officially dubbed Little Richard’s Smokehouse Bar-N-Que – features a rustic vibe with points of local history adorning the walls as well as the lively conversations among friends!

Owner Stephen Karagiorgis and his sister, Victoria Kaliviotis, are enormously proud to nurture the family business they grew up around and continue to broaden Little Richard’s reach by investing and taking the business to new levels! Stephen has been a big part of Little Richard’s evolution and growth, while Victoria recently joined him to expand and market the catering and events arm of the business.

“BBQ is a local staple and so versatile – it can work for a formal gathering, corporate event, family get together or anything in between,” adds Victoria. “We want to make Little Richard’s your go-to for any of those occasions!”

“We offer customized catering for your individual event,” shares Stephen. “Celebrate with our BBQ and savory sauces (a flavor to suit every palate), and we will deliver right to your location. While our smoked meats may be thought of as a more casual meal, they can easily be elevated to elegance!”

Corporate events for 1,000-plus participants are easily accommodated, or maybe you’re interested in a special delivery to your game-day tailgate! (Hint: Thanks to the richness of Little Richard’s sauces, BBQ holds up surprisingly well for an all day event – always moist and delicious)!

The Stratford Road gathering spot blends all the things regular customers have known and loved from the past – namely the authentic taste of smoked pork, chicken, ribs, sausage and brisket – and blends them with some new, tasty twists, all served in a casual setting that’s both fun and warmly welcoming. Every Little Richard’s classic – and all your favorite smoked meat entrées – are on the extensive menu, including their line-up of eight amazing signature sauces. Their newest flavor sensation, “Whole Lotta” sauce, affectionately named for singer Little Richard’s classic hit tune, “A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” is already a customer favorite! Relax and enjoy a full bar menu including craft beer and an inviting outdoor patio with TV and comfy space for sports watching. In fact, a fantasy football league draft or two has been known to take place right here! And, the private dining room is becoming a popular spot for groups to

gather from birthday parties, baby showers, corporate events and class reunions to graduation dinners and noteworthy family occasions.

“Our private dining room can seat 50 to 70 guests while our sunroom is a bright space that can accommodate 20 to 25 guests and also opens right onto the outdoor patio, sprinkled with café lighting for evening get togethers,” says Victoria. “We’ve expanded our catering menu to include more event and work-friendly options such as boxed meals and appetizer platters.”

As the holidays approach, there’s no better option for private parties or festive office gatherings than Little Richard’s tradition of meat pulled fresh off smoked shoulders (smoked for 16 hours, the old fashioned way) and taken straight to the chopping block. Create your own customized menu from chopped BBQ, BBQ chicken, smoked wings, brisket or ribs with classic sides that feature BBQ slaw, cole slaw, baked beans, collard greens, green beans, mac & cheese, pinto beans and potato salad. Beverages and desserts are also available, and full service catering includes an onsite staff to serve buffet style.

Locals know Little Richard’s cuisine is irresistible in every sense of the word, with equally outstanding customer service and a super friendly staff – all the ingredients needed for your next memorable gathering!

Uncovering Our Most Authentic Selves

Nothing reminds me more how much of a miracle in motion we are than watching this once tiny mustard seed that grew within me, transform and blossom into a full fledged person. Bearing witness to this incredible growth, aside, the hardships of parenthood beckons us each to continue or reclaim practices to re-arrive at a sense of peace, joy and abundance

If you are anything like me, you may identify with the idea that we continually die a million little deaths only to be reborn again, more ourselves, every day as mothers. We are placed in this unique position when we become moms to connect more deeply with the process and unfolding of life. The suffering you may experience along the way often has to do with your resistance to rather than ability to flow with these opportunities for awakening over and over again.

Enter some basic (but shockingly challenging, hard to commit to/fit in/prioritize), practices of nourishment that help me ground, recall abundance – of energy, time, patience, joy…and inner peace:

Working out. Moving my body daily. A good dose of endorphins, first thing in the morning, in particular, can really do wonders for wiping the slate clean, helping me re-up my pantry of peace and patience. Whether or not you can fit it in early morning really doesn’t matter though – do what you can, with the time that you have.

Meditation/mindfulness practice – I find this concerted time in stillness to be with my thoughts or, in the case of yoga, move mindfully through my body which harnesses the energy of them – is essential. The world is noisy. This time gives us a chance to pay attention to what feeds our energy, the same way we want our toddlers to have a chance to exert and come to know their own. To connect with the changing nature of our mind and body is a gift – what a bore a static life would be. But, the paradox is that we need to find some way to break from the constant nature of doing what parenthood thrusts us into, and the noise – so we can reconnect with the opportunities that lay within the juggling act.

Eat breakfast. Eat lunch. Eat a snack. Eat dinner. Eat dessert. Make homemade food as often as possible. Hydrate! Sleep as much as possible (when the baby sleeps, right?!). Let this be a reminder that your children have demands for their own nourishment, and that cannot and should not diminish the demands of your own body, mind and spirit, to honor yours. You are the vessel for it all. Our kids are watching us, and so, in this way, we have accountability buddies right within home.

resource we cannot get back. Make time for the people you love. If you cannot show up as your authentic self to those relationships, it might be time to let them go… energy on all cylinders – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual, is our second greatest resource.

5

Remember how we tell our kids “You are what you think. What you think, you become!” Same goes for us. We need to commit to returning to this mantra and doing the things we need to do that support our desire to continue becoming. We are growing and changing right alongside our kids.

Becoming a mother has been a complete and total trip for me. The most fulfilling trip I am taking in life and also the hardest to navigate at certain points. But also, serenely simple and blissfully easy at others.

Within the challenge, I am reminded by connecting with these seemingly basic tenets of “self care” that joy and peace may still always be located, and abundantly so, right within. We just have to be ready to surrender enough so that we can land back at the root from which the seed came. 1 2 3 4

It’s a Grand Life Grand

Autumn and the Changes It Brings

Going from summer to fall in Wilmington isn’t that much of a change weather wise until later in the month. Although I love seeing the leaves change color, unless I go away from the coast, there are only a few spots near me that have some trees with fall color changes. I look forward to bringing out sweaters and lightweight jackets, clothes I haven’t had on for months and some new ones that I am anxious to wear.

Autumn means changing the decor from cool colors to those warm, vibrant ones that go well with the glow from lit logs in the fireplace. After looking at the same items out and about in my home, I love the change to pumpkins, wreaths with fall leaves, items denoting Halloween (even though they’re mainly for my grandchildren) and, later, a few to celebrate Thanksgiving.

The season also means soccer is back on with Saturday games close by for three of our grandchildren, and tournaments that take us to the ones that are out-of-town to see our eldest grandson play. Dance classes, practices, taekwondo, cotillion, school events and more keep the grandkids busy and their parents, too. I enjoy summer with most of its days being somewhat unstructured –doing things when the mood strikes you – instead of having set plans every day outside of school. School starting brings up many situations that impact children and schedules.

There are a lot of changes in curriculum from when my daughters were in elementary, middle and high school. I have problems with some of them and am glad I don’t have to deal with helping anyone with homework. Two of my grandchildren attend their

neighborhood schools. One is in third grade, and the other has just started middle school. I know that neither of them had homework in elementary school other than an occasional worksheet. I haven’t asked the one in sixth grade if she has had any so far. I know the other five grandchildren have something every night. I’m opposed to a lot of homework. I understand that some think it teaches students about time management, but I also see the pressure of having a well-rounded transcript when applying to colleges. It makes for many nights of less sleep than needed in order to be their best.

I despise the new math concept for students who have no trouble understanding the way it used to be taught. For those who need it broken down in order to grasp a problem, I believe those can be taught the new math. There is more than one way for a child to learn, but taking an entire page to find the answer to a basic problem needs to be taught only to those who need that help. I spent a number of years tutoring elementary school students in math and reading. It was so rewarding seeing them understand how to solve a math problem or finally grasp the sounds letters make and how words are formed. Watching a child who could barely read excited about checking books out of the library just a few months later was extremely rewarding. Their smiles said it all!

There are a number of nice things that come with growing older. One is knowing that you don’t have to go back to school unless you want to. The other is knowing your older grandchildren assume there is no way you will understand their homework, so won’t ask for your help.

Enjoy the fall weather. I’m going to go see if the leaves are changing!

The View from My Section – A Father’s Perspective Unlocking Nature’s Secret to Healthier Living

During one of our late-night chats last summer, my adult son and I were discussing the concept of “grounding, or earthing.”

According to research, it’s been found to be quite beneficial in many areas. It’s said to help improve your quality of sleep, reduce stress, boost your energy levels and improve mood. In addition, studies found “a reduction in white blood cells and an increase in red blood cells, which hints at better immunity” and allows for faster healing of wounds. The process involves “making direct contact with the earth’s surface and thus receiving its natural electrical charge.” The science behind the activity is described in this way. “The earth has a negative charge, while our bodies have a positive charge due to the buildup of free radicals and other toxins. When we walk barefoot on the earth, we allow the negative charge from the earth to flow into our bodies, neutralizing the positive charge and bringing balance to our systems.” Thus, using the earth’s natural frequencies to bring harmony to the body. In addition, it’s said that walking on the uneven surface of the grass provides natural acupressure, “stimulating various points on the soles of the feet that are connected to different organs in our bodies. This can help to improve circulation, reduce pain and inflammation, and stimulate the immune system.”

You can do this most commonly by walking barefoot in the grass, or as in the case of the local park or your backyard, you can lie down completely on the ground. The point is to make direct contact. There are also electronic devices sold to accomplish this indoors, for those who are not able to routinely get outside for one reason or another. A word of caution – be aware of anything on the surface that may cause injury, as well as, wash your feet thoroughly afterwards to avoid any potential exposure to harmful microorganisms

My son felt – much like I did at first – skeptical, though he is very health-conscious with his exercise routine, diet and nutrition. I tried it out a few times by sitting in my yard and enjoying the nice weather (with my bare feet fully embedded in the grass). I can’t say fully whether the positive effect I felt from it was psychosomatic or real. Regardless, I did feel some positive benefits afterward (more energy and enhanced mood).

One idea expressed for the need for grounding or earthing is related to how limited our time spent outdoors in nature has become for many of us. I know growing up without various forms of electronic entertainment made it easier for all the kids on the street to want to get outside and play games, sports, hike, camp and anything else. Today, it’s different.

My son and I agreed this may not be equally effective for everyone. Yet, it’s hard to argue with the natural positive feeling you receive when you can get outside and enjoy the weather,

scenery, fresh air and other organic benefits of nature. It’s easy to get caught up in your daily routine and omit this important aspect of life. And, I’m not limiting this to simply the grounding or earthing approach. In lots of neighborhoods, many people have their daily walks or jogs. They eagerly promote the benefits of this habitual practice. Others are actively involved in regular outdoor activities, sports leagues and more. They naturally receive the health benefits of both exercise and nature in combination. I had one friend and coworker who went rock climbing several times a year. That’s a little out of my comfort zone, both physically and concerning the risks involved. He, however, was very experienced, well-trained and highly proficient in the skill.

In my experience, being in nature (in various forms) also helps with your mental health. Have you ever been working on a problem and constantly hit a dead-end with no new ideas in sight? Then, you take a break and walk outside to clear the air so to speak, and suddenly, you’re able to see the problem differently and determine a potential solution much easier and faster than before. Or, visited the mountains or beaches and just sat and enjoyed the views, producing an almost quasi-meditative state.

October in the Carolinas is generally a good time of year to enjoy the outside. The temperature is more moderate, the weather is more predictable, allergies can be less of an issue and problem critters are too busy preparing for winter to bother you as much. My wife and I agreed that if we didn’t have an outdoor routine by this month, we would start one. Whether it’s grounding, walking, going hiking or simply enjoying live outdoor music with bare feet in the grass, I’m looking forward to experimenting with it again.

“Wow, look at the grass stains on my skin. I say, if your knees aren’t green by the end of the day, you ought to seriously reexamine your life.” ~ Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes, 1992 Musical Selection: Micah Edwards - Getaway (Official Video)
