e’ve all heard the story of the jar with rocks in it that appears “full.”

It’s not full. You can add sand in the jar to fill it just a little more so the sand now occupies the space between the rocks.

Then, when you think that there is no possible way to add any more to the jar, water is added and it is filled to the brim.

ou’re engaged! You want to shout it from the rooftops! This is more than okay as long as you don’t know anyone within earshot and the surrounding area doesn’t have any kind of noise ordinance. You will want those closest to you to hear the news in a personal way. To make it special, consider the following:

• Share the news in person, if possible, with those that should know first – close family, your chosen wedding party and other close friends. If an in-person meeting isn’t possible, call them as soon as you can or send a personalized note sharing the news before it becomes common knowledge.

• Avoid obnoxious or inappropriate posts on social media. You have every right to be happy, but consider the permanency of the Internet, and share your news in a tasteful, mature way.

• Less is more! Keep it short and sweet. We have all read those blogs that highlight what the most annoying Facebook posts are, and many of them come from those who divulge way too much detail on such a public forum. Your relationship is private, and the intimate details should be kept private.

By Martie Emory ven if you’ve just begun to plan your wedding, you already know how vital your wedding vendor relationships can be.

Just as you’ll be counting on them to give you peace of mind to enjoy your day, give them your full respect along the way!

• Always, always be respectful of their schedules. Be on time for every appointment.

• If you must cancel a meeting, call them as soon as possible to open up that time slot for another bride.

• Consolidate your correspondence as much as possible – as in gather your thoughts and send only one email, not four or five. Remember, you’re not their only client!

• Give each vendor as many details about your plans as possible so they can truly share your “vision” of your celebration.

• Keep them up-to-date with changes: a bridesmaid who had to drop out or an elderly grandparent who now needs special seating, for example.

• Respect their talents and don’t micromanage their decisions. You’ve hired them, now trust them to make the day unforgettable!

• If you’ve met with a wedding professional and received a quote for their services, let them know in a timely manner if you’ve decided to go with another vendor.

If you think you might be a turning into a Bridezilla, ask yourself the following to find out.

1. Did you force your bridal party to wear dresses that contain any of the following: bows positioned anywhere near the derriere, lace Madonna gloves, anything in the neon family, or dresses made from potato sacks?

2. Do you find yourself yelling a lot, and if so, do people stop and stare?

3. Has your wedding planner blocked your calls, changed her number, or taken out a restraining order?

4. Do people back away from you when you approach them or cower as if a cell phone might suddenly be propelled at their face?

5. Is the bottom of your foot sore from stomping?

6. Does your wedding budget exceed the GNP of developing nations?

7. Is your father working the night shift at your local fast food joint to pay for it?

8. Have the groomsmen ceased to call you by name in favor of more colorful nicknames?

9. Does your wedding binder resemble a nuclear missile attack plan?

10. Do you find yourself repeating “But it’s my day!” over and over again to anyone who will listen?

If you answered yes to any of these, take a deep breath and remember that getting married is about building relationships (yes, even with your mother-in-law). Stay focused on the one relationship that matters most - your marriage. There will be plenty of time to torture the kids with butt bows and fuchsia flounces later!

• Your fashion “boards” are easily shared with out-of-town bridesmaids (read: finding a dress they all love).

• The boards you create that showcase table settings or menu ideas are easily shared with out-of-town in-laws.

• Step back and visualize what your “dream” really is. Are you hikers and explorers on the weekends? Consider saying your vows outdoors with rustic wooden benches and a simple altar.

• For true romantics – you’re already planning to recite poetry to each other during the ceremony – there’s a charming little white chapel just waiting for your special day.

• Whether you wear your hair up or down, it needs to hold the style throughout the day and evening without looking stiff or being uncomfortable. A professional knows how to provide this.

• Make sure the vendor is available for your wedding date before scheduling a trial run. Take pictures of yourself once you have selected the hair style and makeup that is the look you desire.

If possible, schedule your formal bridal picture for the same day.

• In choosing the right vendor, ask yourself the following: Did she ask me questions and listen to my preferences?

Selecting Your Photographer

By Meghan Corbett he cost of professional photography can vary greatly, so before meeting with anyone, set a budget you are comfortable with and do your research. This means asking for referrals, researching online and getting to know a photographer as well as possible before scheduling a meeting. You are busy…there is no need to waste your time or a potential photographer’s time if he or she is way out of your price range or has a style you do not like.

Once you have a good idea that a photographer may be a good fit, set up a meeting to see if your personalities would work well together during a busy, possibly chaotic, day. Make sure he or she knows what you want by showing examples of shots or styles you like.

Some photographers have prices that only include their time and a certain number of printed images. Make sure that you will get everything you want for the price you are quoted. This can include a wedding album, parent albums, engagement and bridal portrait sessions, framed bridal portrait and even a CD of all of the images your photographer has taken.

The best advice anyone can give you as you begin this process is to be as organized and knowledgeable as possible before making any decisions. Hopefully, you will find a photographer who is as helpful as he or she is talented, so the memories from your big day will be flawlessly captured and will last for years and years to come!

By Rebecca Olsen f you are looking to incorporate little ones into your ceremony, but are worried they may not cooperate, here are a few tips to keep them engaged and happy on your big day.

1. Give them a task. Giving children a purpose will help keep them focused and less likely to wander or get into trouble.

‘haSHtag/noun (on social media sites such as Instagram, Twitter & Facebook) a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages (and pictures) on a specific topic. aving a wedding hashtag is a fairly new trend… I didn’t even know what a hashtag was when I got married (which was only 2 years ago)! In 2012, only 9% of weddings used a hashtag…and in 2014 the percentage jumped up to 55%! I personally love this new trend, and I can’t think of a better way to view and compile wedding photos taken by your friends and family!

A few things to keep in mind if you decide to partake in the wedding hashtag trend: • Make it unique! Ask a creative friend or family member to help you come up with some options if you are struggling…or try a “hashtag generator” (I found this one at www.weddinghashtagwall.com/wedding-hashtag-generator) • Check to make sure no one else has already used the hashtag you’ve chosen.

• Let people know about it! Have it displayed at your wedding, of course, but consider adding it to your wedding website, save-the-dates and invitations as well.

• Have fun with it! Hashtags are a great way to get your guests involved in your special day.

• Have your guests throw unique items as you walk through their tunnel to your limousine, car, carriage, etc. – leaves in the fall, flowers/flower petals in the spring, fake snow in the winter, mini beach balls in the summer, confetti, oatmeal or bird seed to keep the wildlife happy, or even paper airplanes with sweet wishes for the bride and groom included.

• Give guests a way to make your exit truly shine with sparklers to line the exit, bubbles for some added whimsy, balloons for a celebratory twist, pom-poms in the colors of your alma mater or streamers so your friends and family can get creative!

• Rent a red carpet and give all your guests disposable cameras or ask that they use their phones with flash to give you the celebrity treatment as you exit your big event!

• Have your guests launch Chinese sky lanterns with best wishes for you and your groom written on them.

By Meghan Corbett egardless of how digital our lives become, handwriting a thank-you note will always be the proper way to thank someone for a gift. People will often tell you not to worry about writing a note because they know you are busy, but you should always write one, no matter what.

While writing dozens of thank-you notes after a large event such as a wedding can be tiring and tedious, you have plenty of time to spread out the task. You will also have a new spouse who should absolutely share in the responsibility. You can split thank-you notes based on whether the gift was from a guest on your side or your spouse’s side to make it easy. Once the blank cards are ready for writing, consider these suggestions to make your thank-you notes as genuine as they should be!

• Try to avoid short, impersonal thankyou notes. Yes, it is exhausting for your hand, but your guest deserves a thoughtful thank-you card…not just a “thanks for the gift…it was great seeing you!” Maybe throw in something you remember talking to them about at the reception or something memorable that has happened in your life since the big day.

• Use neat penmanship. Take your time, and make sure your note is legible.

• Make sure to mail your thank-you notes within the appropriate time frame. Contrary to popular belief, you should have thank-you notes mailed within three months of the wedding date…not one year. If you can write and mail on the day you receive the gift, it is even better.

Preserving Your Dream Dress

By Rebecca Olsen inally you’ve found the perfect wedding dress and made it your own. No doubt you’ll want to preserve your dress and the memories it holds for future generations. Deciding whom to trust with this important task can be difficult. Here are a few things to consider.

• Check with local dry cleaners. Your bridal store is not the only option for having your dress preserved.

Make sure to ask if they do the cleaning and packaging on site or contract the work out.

• Look for materials that are acid free and PH-neutral, including tissue paper, the box, tape, and viewing window. Muslin fabric is also an excellent choice for wrapping.

• Some brides are forgoing full packaging and opting to store their dresses in archival bags for the first year, bringing them out again for first anniversary pictures. Make sure to have your gown cleaned regardless. Stains that cannot be seen with the naked eye can yellow with time.

• Look for guarantees. Some companies require you to sign a waiver saying they are not responsible for damages.

A reputable company should be willing to stand behind their services.

• Plan to pay. Preservation starts around $150 and goes up from there, depending on the type of gown, the extent of cleaning needed, and the choice of storage options.

• Finally, find a cool, dry, sunless place to store your gown long term, so it will be just as beautiful in years to come!

Honeymoon Tips • Decide on a budget and stick with it!

Work with a travel agent to help find the best deals on flights, hotels, and rental cars. Consider travel insurance.

• As tempting as it is, DO NOT make reservations in your married name.

You will be required to provide ID at the airlines and if you’re taking your honeymoon immediately following your wedding, you will not have time to adjust your identification to match your reservations.

• If you’re planning to go out of the country, be sure you have a current passport! It can take 4 – 6 weeks to receive your passport; plan ahead.

• Create an agenda. Make a copy of it and your important documents in case something is lost or stolen. Give a copy to a trusted friend or family member in the event of an emergency.

• A week before departing, confirm all your reservations.

• Make a list of important phone numbers, including the closest US Embassy if you are traveling overseas.

• When packing, refer to your agenda to make sure you have the clothes and shoes you’ll need for the types of activities you’re planning (and leave room in the suitcase for him!).
