I

t’s official; summertime is coming to a close. Children and teachers are back in school, and my house is quiet again. It’s always a little sad and an adjustment for me when they first leave but this year is different. My oldest daughter, Briana, will be graduating in December and my youngest, Morgan, will graduate in May. So, needless to say, it was a bittersweet final college move-in. I’m excited for graduation celebrations to come and the next phase of life this will bring for them but a little sad that they will be one step closer to full adulthood. As always, I’m just amazed at how quickly life seems to go by; how did five years go by so quickly?

So, fall is practically upon us and, as usual, there are more fun events happening than I have time to attend! The Make-A-Wish® fundraiser (see pg 1), Apple Fest @ Historic Bethabara Park (see pg 16), Fiesta (see pg 84), Autumn in Old Salem (see pg 83), Wake Forest Football (see pg 63) and Kersey Valley Corn Maize and Spookywoods (see pg 16 & 55) to name a few! September and October have some of my favorite times of the year other than summer. The weather in our area is usually just perfect, although who knows what kind of weather we may end up with based on how it’s been thus far in 2014. Snow in October, maybe?

hoppers at the recently renovated Lowes Foods stores in the Winston-Salem area are greeted by a sign that says “Welcome to Our Farm.” They’re not kidding. As you enter the front door of the newly renovated Lowes Foods stores, the aroma of fresh herbs fills the air. Not just bags of herbs. Live herbs growing in real soil and ready for shoppers to harvest and take home.

‘Cakery walk.’ This fun event involves team members from the Cakery, who place plastic cake squares on the floor and initiate a traditional cake walk dance to special music,” Davis said. “Best of all, shoppers and their families can join in the cake walk, and the winner receives a cake square as a prize. It’s whimsical fun for kids of all ages.”

“We are continuously updating the concepts for our renovated stores,” Lowes Foods brand director Kelly Davis said. “Last winter, our Clemmons store was the newest concept. We’ve built on what we learned in Clemmons and other locations by adding even more to the shopping experience on Robinhood Road.”

Lowes Foods’ Robinhood Road store also features a unique new area called Boxcar Coffee & Chocolates, a place where select coffee beans are freshly roasted and a variety of chocolate barks are prepared at the store. And, as the name implies, Lowes Foods has recreated a train-like boxcar inside the store so that guests can sit and enjoy their fresh coffee, chocolate and other foods.

After cutting a few fresh herbs, shoppers at Lowes Foods’ Robinhood Road store enter a virtual greenhouse, brimming with locally grown potted plants, fresh-cut flowers and floral accessories. And what would a trip to the farm be without fresh produce? You can count on it at Lowes Foods.

“In all our stores, we strive to stock the produce department with as many fresh local fruits and vegetables as possible. Of course, it varies by season. Recently, the produce departments have been filled with baskets of fresh local peaches,” Davis added. “The produce area of the newly renovated stores also feature Pick & Prep, where shoppers select fruits or vegetables and Lowes Foods’ Pick & Prep hosts use their advanced knife skills to chop, slice or julienne them.”

Just past the produce section of the Lowes Foods’ Robinhood Road store emerges a highlight of the shopping experience: the Cakery.

Unique to the Robinhood Road store, the Cakery is a new Lowes Foods concept where being square is incredibly cool. The Cakery features “scrumptiouslyumptiously” (a special Lowes Foods word) delicious square cakes in all sizes and shapes that are assembled before eyes with buttercream icing made in-store. Don’t forget to request a sample of the icing – supplied to you, of course, on tiny square spoons.

Like other recently renovated Lowes Foods, the Robinhood Road store features SausageWorks, where kids can press buttons and turn knobs in a virtual sausage factory. Kids like interacting with the Lowes Foods’ Sausage Professor, who has created more than 20 unique flavors of sausage, including The Star Spangler, a cheeseburger flavored sausage and The Grillmaster, a sausage that eats like a steak. The store also showcases the Chicken Kitchen near its entrance, where a giant chicken chandelier alerts shoppers by playing a special version of the Chicken Dance when freshly roasted chickens emerge from the oven. And, yes, you can dance along with Lowes Foods hosts.

As you enter or exit Lowes Foods, don’t forget to check on the giant blackboard that lists upcoming events at the store’s Community Table. Lowes Foods has the Community Table as a centerpiece at all its newly renovated stores, where both adults and kids can sample, enjoy and learn how to prepare foods. You can even meet the folks who make many of the local products sold in Lowes Foods. In addition to sampling, the Community Table also features events such as crafts for children and even couponing classes.

Natural Family Fun at Mill Creek General Store

Studies and articles about removing chemicals and processed foods from one’s diet are constantly circulating on social media and news sources, but sometimes it’s hard to shell out the extra dollars or drive the extra miles to make it happen. Mill Creek General Store in Mount Airy aims to make it easy and fun to shop for healthy, natural foods without traveling in the high traffic areas of the city. “The more naturally one can eat, the better. The closer to scratch, the healthier, because one avoids excess additives and ingredients,” said Helen Holmes, co-owner of Mill Creek General Store with her husband, Ben. “According to a newsletter I read called the Blaylock Wellness Report, it’s advised to stay away from processed foods with more than five ingredients. That’s tough to do. For instance, we should stay away from things like MSG, also known as monosodium glutamate. Even though glutamate is naturally in our bodies and in many foods.” Helen continued, “MSG is a flavor enhancer and added to make foods taste better. Present in the brain, neuronal cells react to the chemical by being excited, speeding up our cells’ processes, so that these cells then die prematurely. That’s just one additive. But we no doubt get many additives in processed foods harmful to our bodies.”

To do their part, Mill Creek General Store offers as many chemical-free and natural products as it can, while still giving their customers what they want. “Not everything in our store is ‘natural’ or ‘organic.’ We’re a strange mix, because that’s what our customers want,” said Helen. “We do offer the ‘healthier’ options for those customers with special dietary needs who seek out gluten-free or chemical-free products.”

“When a product is stated to be ‘natural,’ the following criteria for the ingredients are used: unrefined cane sugar, molasses powder, sea salt, non-GMO expeller, pressed high oleic canola oil, unbleached and whole wheat flour, non-GMO soy sauce powder, non-GMO native corn starch and maltodextrin, domestic rice grown from non-GMO-tested seed, dried herbs, spices and essential oils, natural plant-based colorings, natural flavorings, natural antioxidants and acidulents like vitamin C, vinegar powder, lime juice powder, citric acid and rosemary oil,” she related.

Aside from offering customers healthy and natural foods, Mill Creek General Store provides a fun and entertaining day trip. Located in the town that inspired the set of Andy Griffith, Mill Creek combines local interests and history to create a nostalgic memory of the 1930s and 40s. “We named our store Mill Creek because it’s located on the creek side of Mount Airy, an old mill town. A very old brick mill building is located just across the street from our store,” said Ben Holmes.

“We incorporated the local mill theme into the design of our store.”

Ben said that Mill Creek General Store provides a fun stop for lunch and shopping. Shoppers can stop in and get a fresh sandwich made to order. With the relaxed atmosphere of Mount Airy and the tourist attractions nearby, it’s easy to turn your trip to Mill Creek General Store into a fun, family-friendly day trip.

“A Marine recruiter was recently in our store and he said he had been to many restaurants in many towns over the years, and by far we had the best Reuben sandwich he had ever eaten,” Ben said. “All our sandwiches and wraps are made with fresh ingredients, and we build custom orders with the ‘Make-Me-A-Sammich’ option. We understand what it’s like to want to feed your kids something healthy, so we are happy to make the classic peanut-butter-and-jelly with freshly milled peanut butter or a fresh grilled cheese.”

An even bigger benefit to shopping at Mill Creek General Store is that your dollars will be supporting a local family business. “Our two older girls work hard at the register, at packing, at stocking, whatever needs to be done,” Helen said. “Our three younger boys are great workers as well, packing, stocking and serving in the soda fountain area. Although nearly 51% of adults aged 65 or older living at home reported some form of incontinence, it should not be considered normal or an inevitable part of aging. "Incontinence occurs when muscles are too weak or too active. If the muscles are weak, patients may have accidents. If muscles become too active, there may be a strong urge to go to the bathroom. There are other causes of incontinence, such as prostate problems, and nerve damage. Even certain diseases such as Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis can compromise bladder functions. Although 75% of the patients I see are women, it does happen to men as well."

His interest in sphincters, valves, how the bladder works and making artificial bladders out of bowels has led him through a distinguished career which included a residency at the highly regarded Lahey Clinic. s summer winds down and kids return to school, consider taking a moment to ponder your own daily routine. Are you making the choice to take time for exercise, healthy meal preparation and even quiet rest? If the answer to that question is “No,” you are not alone.

Be proactive about your nutrition.

Pick one day during the week when you typically have some free time. Spend part of that day planning and preparing healthy meals and snacks for the week ahead. The meals can be placed in the freezer and used throughout the week when life feels hectic. When we come in exhausted and hungry at the end of a long day, it is too tempting to grab “convenience food.” Having sensible options on hand is critical when working to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

It is crucial to have a plan in place when it comes to exercise. Between work, kids, and the everyday demands of life, it becomes too easy to skip valuable workouts. If you wait to “fit it in” when it’s convenient, it simply won’t happen.

Plan exercise sessions into your week and stick to your commitment.

Something as simple as planning a walk or a bike ride is a great first step.

The important thing is that you have planned it in advance because it is a priority.

Ankle Sprains An Injury That May

Cane, DPM, FACFAS Mothershed, Mothershed, Arne, Cates and Cane ith an estimated 25,000 people spraining their ankles in the United States on a daily basis, this injury is very common and usually considered minor. However, about 25% of those suffering from an ankle sprain experience long-term joint pain and weakness. Understanding what happens when an ankle is sprained, and how to assess the damage, is crucial to developing an effective treatment plan and preventing ongoing problems.

The ankle becomes sprained when the ligaments that connect the bones to the foot, ankle and lower leg are stretched or torn. Ankle sprains usually happen when you make a rapid shifting movement with your foot planted. It is a common injury when playing soccer or being tackled in football.

Generally, the ankle rolls outward while the foot turns inward, resulting in what is called an “inversion injury.” The ligaments on the outside of the ankle will become stretched and possibly torn. Less frequently, the ankle will roll inward while the foot rolls outward and this is defined as an “eversion injury,” which damages the ligaments on the inside of the ankle.

The injury to the ligaments varies in severity, and podiatrists grade these based upon the intensity of damage. Grade 1 involves stretching or slight tearing of the ligament with mild tenderness, swelling and stiffness. While experiencing some discomfort, you will be able to walk with minimal pain. Grade II is diagnosed as a larger but incomplete tear with moderate pain, swelling and bruising. Damaged areas will be tender to the touch and walking is painful. The most severe version, Grade III is a complete tear of the affected ligament or ligaments with extensive swelling and bruising. Walking is usually impossible because the ankle will give out and the pain is intense.

Symptoms usually increase in severity with increased damage to the ligaments. In more serious sprains, you may hear or feel a tearing sensation and a pop or snap. You will usually experience extreme pain initially and become unable to walk or put any weight on your foot.

If moderate or severe sprains do not heal correctly, your ankle joint may become prone to re-injury. This can occur with the slightest trauma, such as stepping off a curb. In extreme cases, your ankle may become unstable and easily re-sprained, with persistent pain and swelling.

When a patient comes to me with an ankle sprain, I ask them about prior injuries and examine their ankle to see if additional injury has 26 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

occurred. If the sprain is mild, X-rays may not be needed. In more severe sprains, X-rays are usually taken, as it is possible that a bone in the ankle or foot may break at the same time a sprain occurs.

The treatment I prescribe for ankle sprain patients usually follows what is described as the PRINCE approach. Protection involves the use of a protective brace, such as an air stirrup or another form of ankle support, along with a compression wrap, such as an ACE bandage for the first 24 to 36 hours. Rest entails using crutches until walking without them is no longer painful.

For at least 24 to 72 hours or until the swelling goes down, I tell my patients to apply an ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes every 1 to 2 hours during the day. After 48 hours, a contrast bath, which alternates cold and warm water, is prescribed.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be taken as directed, not only when you have pain, but throughout the day and night for the first few days after injury. Compression involves the application of an elastic compression pack, such as an ACE bandage, which will help decrease swelling for the first 24 to 36 hours. I also advise my patients that a compression wrap does not offer protection, so they should also wear a protective brace if they want to walk on their injured ankle. Elevation entails raising the ankle above the level of the heart for two to three hours a day to decrease swelling and bruising.

Appropriate treatment and rehabilitation exercises are critical to the healing of ankle sprains. Surgery to the torn ligaments may be recommended if there is a severe ligament tear or multiple tears, or if the bone remains unstable after rehabilitation. Surgery is also a consideration if a bone has been broken.

Ankle sprains may be minor, but if they are not, they may develop into a lifetime of discomfort. As a podiatrist who has treated thousands of these injuries, I encourage those who have sprained their ankle to monitor the injury carefully, and if it does not respond to common-sense home remedies, be sure to check with your doctor for treatment before it becomes a chronic problem.

Learn the benefits of 3-D mammography By: Lee Ann Naylor, MD Director of Breast Services, Triad Radiology Associates 3-D mammography , also known as breast tomosynthesis, is an exciting breakthrough in breast imaging and is considered to be a major improvement over standard 2-D mammography .

During a standard mammogram the entire breast is included on each image, causing the internal tissues of the breast to overlie one another. Sometimes the overlapping tissues can obscure or hide a cancer, making it difficult or impossible to see on the standard mammogram. In addition, areas of dense normal tissue can be superimposed on one another causing an appearance that mimics a cancer or other abnormality.

The difficulties related to superimposed tissues on standard mammograms are more common in dense breasts, but can occur in less dense breasts also. Therefore 3-D mammography helps to decrease the impact of overlapping tissues in many women, but especially those with dense breasts.

A woman having a 3-D mammography exam will find that it is performed similarly to a standard mammogram, with the breast held in compression. However, for the 3-D exam the x-ray machine moves in an arc or semicircle over the breast, rapidly taking a series of low radiation x-ray exposures in addition to the standard mammogram views. This only takes a few seconds longer than a standard mammogram. A computer program then processes the data to create a stack of 1 millimeter thick images that better show the internal structure of the breast….in 3-D. to looking through a deck of cards one at a time. This 3-D technique greatly reduces the interference and confusion caused by overlying tissues. Some breast cancers are much more easily seen on the 3-D images than on the standard mammogram, while some areas of concern questioned on the standard mammogram are shown on the 3-D images to be simply due to normal tissues.

This means that 3-D mammography has increased sensitivity, specificity and accuracy over standard mammography. In fact, a recent major study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association in June, 2014 indicates that 3-D mammography has a 41% increase in detection of invasive breast cancers (which are the most lethal type of breast cancer), a 29% increase in detection of all breast cancers, and a 15% decrease in the number of women recalled for additional imaging.1 These significant improvements make 3-D mammography a great step forward in the early detection of breast cancer, with the added benefit of decreased patient anxiety and inconvenience due to a lower recall rate for additional imaging.

When Your Child’s Friend Has Cancer

By Stacy Leighton eptember is Child Cancer Awareness Month. There are no two ways about it— “cancer” is one of the scariest words in the English language. But when it is our child’s friend who has cancer, we can be completely derailed. Know that you and your child could be an integral part of their friend’s well being and hope for healing. You can be the lighthouse in the storm.

When children have cancer, friendships are more important than you may know.

Studies show that positive relationships boost certain hormones that help conventional medicines. Elevated positive feelings raise our Serotonin, Norephinephren and Oxytocin (creating a happy, even sense of well being) and lower our Cortisol (improving our immune system). But there is even more that you can do to help.

First, reach out to the family; ask them what you can do for them. Explain that you’d like to talk to your child about his friend’s illness. Is it okay to tell your child? You will want to know how much their child already knows.

When you are ready to talk to your child, try to be as calm as possible; children take emotional cues from us. Check yourself, chose your timing and audience carefully. Have a few good children’s books (listed below) on hand. Keep it brief and leave space for questions. Some children will have a lot of questions; some may need time to absorb it. Invite them to come back and ask questions any time. It might go something like this: “Your friend Bobby is sick. It is called cancer. Do you know what that means?”

“Can he play?’

“I think so. Because of germs, we’ll want to make sure we keep especially clean when we visit. We’ll call his mom to see when he feels up to it.”

“What can I do to make him feel better?”

“Just be yourself. You might feel scared at first, but don’t worry.

The more you guys hang out, the easier it will be to have fun.”

“It’s okay to ask him about cancer or the hospital. He may want to talk about it, maybe he won’t. He may just want to act normal.”

“Is he going to die?”

“Sometimes people do die from cancer; sometimes they get better. We don’t know, what we do know is that being sick can make people feel tired and sometimes sad.”

“What can I do to make him feel happier?”

“Let’s make a best-friend care package! Baseball cards, games, art supplies, movies that will make you guys laugh.”

“Maybe you can bring him his homework and you can do it together.”

As for their families, they, too, may need a break. Organize a food tree, where friends take turns cooking for the family. You might also offer to stay with the boys, so they can go grocery shopping, to a movie or for a walk. You and your child can offer a shining light during some very dark and challenging days.

“Can I get sick from being with him?”

“No. Cancer is different from a cold or virus, you can’t catch it from him.”

“Will he be in school?”

“Probably not, he might need to be in the hospital or stay home to protect him from germs that might make him sicker.”

Welcoming Home a NICU

By Lisa S.T. Doss octors and nurses who work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit can be described as miracle workers. It takes great faith to surrender a newborn infant to the professionals, but parents—out of sheer love for their fragile baby—willingly do so without question. The time spent in the NICU is a journey of time, worry and hopefulness.

There is great emotion in hearing the words “released from care.” Welcoming home a NICU baby carries a greater responsibility than with infants who were discharged three to five days after delivery. Some premature infants may require continuing medications, home medical care, use of medical equipment and appointments with specialists. With preparation, a new chapter begins at home.

Milestones to be Discharged The removal of ventilators and C-Pap machines, intravenous lines, and the transfer to a crib are all celebratory milestones. It means the baby is growing stronger and soon will be able to go home. To be released, infants must: • be able to regulate their own temperature, • weigh a minimum of four pounds, • be able to breathe independently, • successfully breast and/or bottle-feed.

Working alongside the primary nurse, parents will gain confidence caring for their child while in the NICU; however, all those opportunities feeding, dressing, bathing and checking vitals are actually in preparation for the transition home. Coordinating through the pediatrician and other medical specialists, parents will be given a medical care plan.

Pediatrician Visit A day or two after release, your pediatrician will begin monitoring your baby’s medical and developmental needs. Across the first six-weeks, it is important for a key person, such as a spouse, to assist in asking vital questions and listening to the doctor’s recommendations. In addition, writing questions in advance will assure all concerns are covered.

Home Monitoring Initially, parents will need to take extra notice of their baby’s health. Minor conditions often will change unexpectedly. High temperatures, symptoms of dehydration, an infected belly button or circumcision, rapid or labored breathing, forceful vomiting, or continuous diarrhea will be a reason for parents to call the doctor’s office and proceed to the emergency room.

Feedings While moms will heed the advice never to wake a sleeping baby, the exception lies with a premature infant, who often sleeps for long

• undressing the baby down to a diaper.

• using a baby wipe around your neck and forehead.

• massaging legs or tickling around your sides or neck.

• talking excitedly or singing upbeat songs.

• keeping a supply of breast milk, either frozen or refrigerated, and beginning to bottle feed.

For babies who only gain a few ounces the first month, a pediatrician will recommend a supplemental formula to boost caloric intake.

In two weeks, parents will feel relieved to see a healthier child and a substantial weight gain.

Every parent has a different experience, once their baby comes home from the NICU. Yes, monitoring your baby’s health, in addition to the frequent doctor appointments, lessens over time. While coming home is a great milestone, parents will happily celebrate prolonged periods of wakefulness, smiling and laughing, and, most importantly, transitioning into 0–3 clothing.

What I Want My Son To Know About How to Treat Others

To others, who don’t know he’s on the spectrum, my son can seem quite selfish and self-centered, but he isn’t. For example, during a recent visit to the allergist, Parker-John became terrified at the thought of enduring the “skin test” used to test patients for their reaction to various allergens. When the nurses came in to do the test, my son freaked out completely. I had to speak soothingly while physically forcing him to get on his stomach, be still, and expose his back for the test, which consisted in the nurses putting allergens on his back.

Parker-John was afraid needles would be involved (they weren’t). He bucked. He yelled. Frankly, he frightened me almost as much as he frightened the strangers in the room.

eople are fragile, and often, those who seem most frightening actually are the most frightened. Many who are unpleasant toward others act that way because of intense feelings of unworthiness or shame, brought on by painful experiences. That’s why I want my son to treat everyone with respect, even when those folks don’t give him the same respect. Is this an easy task? Nope. Do I, as a person guiding my son’s education, always live by this dictum? Nope.

After the ordeal was over, I spoke to him. I told him how his actions scared me and the others. I told him that, if he were just a little bigger, he might have hurt someone. Parker-John looked at me, startled. “I don’t want to hurt anyone, daddy,” he said. His eyes began to fill with tears just at the thought of hurting someone else. That’s truly who my son is; he’s a person who cares about the feelings of others. He just may not come across that way.

But something else I want him to know is that it’s never too late to change your focus on others. I’m trying to teach him to take a pause during situations with “difficult” people and try to hold them in compassionate thought. I want him to know that, when others treat him poorly, it doesn’t give him the right to do the same.

I won’t always be around to give him these lessons or to give him honest, loving feedback. Nonetheless, I will provide that feedback as long as I can. Thus, I want my son to know that others often are frightened—just like he was during his skin test. Or they’re frustrated, overwhelmed, filled with pain, distracted, etc. I would love to teach Parker-John that most people walk around as happy as clams, but that’s just not been my experience.

I also want my son not to suffer from “only child’s disease.” I can relate.

My little brother wasn’t born until I was ten, so I think of myself as a recovering only child. I was used to being the center of attention and not having to, say, share Christmas cash from relatives. I still have a tendency toward thinking that what I have to say is most important, that I shouldn’t have to wait for others, that others are occupying “my” space. I am not proud of these tendencies and work all the time to overcome them.

My son, Parker-John, isn’t just an only child, however. He’s also on the autism spectrum, which makes him even more likely to focus on himself.

And I want him to know that others are not sharing “his” space.

Everyone is sharing the limited space and resources that exist on our planet. People are not obstructions. They’re people. And they matter, regardless of their station in life.

If I can teach him these two, related lessons, then I believe I have accomplished one of my most important goals as a parent: to create a compassionate, empathic human being.

Small Stories for a Big World

By Kim Underwood ometimes, Doobins wakes up in the middle of the night and has difficulty getting back to sleep.

S

When that happened one night recently, Garnet and I were talking with him about it the next morning. The trouble, he said, is that he starts thinking about things and that makes it hard to go back to sleep “I know you never have that problem,” Doobins said. “You don’t think about things as much as I do.”

making ships in a bottle. Having to be that painstaking would drive me bonkers. He liked making ships in a bottle, though, because having to pay such close attention cleared his mind and relaxed him.

Anyway, when Garnet saw the imaginary printout of my thoughts, she said that, if she arrived in hell and was told she would have to read it, she would say, “Surely I wasn’t that bad.”

I laughed.

This from a young man who is 11. Garnet and I both started laughing.

“Yeah,” Garnet said, “when I wake up in the middle of the night, I just lie there and think, ‘Gosh, it’s dark in here.’”

I told Doobins that it’s too bad you can’t just print out your thoughts.

If you could, I said, I would print out a list of the things that I fret about when I wake up in the middle of the night and make him read it. As I said that, I reached high with one hand and low with the other to show an imaginary printout more than a yard long.

Garnet’s father, Tim, is a gifted machinist, carpenter, mechanic, industrial designer and poet. His work requires him to fabricate parts for giant machines, and, one day soon after I met him, he was telling me about having to make a giant screw for a machine at work. The tolerances, he said, were only one 3,000th of an inch. He was telling me this because he was excited about meeting the challenge.

It never ceases to amaze me how different people are in that respect.

Something that is satisfying for one person would be nightmare for another. That’s the way it was with Tim’s challenge. I’m not gifted in that way, and I later told Garnet that, if I arrived in hell and was told that, for the rest of eternity, my job would be to fabricate parts with a tolerance of one 3,000th of an inch, I would say, “Surely I wasn’t that bad.”

I also thought that after I interviewed a man for a story about him

“Really,” Doobins said, “I wouldn’t want to read anybody’s mind.”

I agreed. You just wouldn’t want to know what all is in there. If other people could read my mind, I would be embarrassed because so much of it is so mundane. As it is, Garnet already has to listen me fret about all sorts of humdrum topics, such has how much trouble it would be to fix the soft place in the bathroom floor.

No telling what it would do to her if she also had to hear thoughts that were even more dull, such as whether I should throw away the sock with a hole in the toe or wear it a few more times.

I do sometimes wonder what Doobins is thinking, because I imagine that is far more elevated than much of what fills my head. Several times during the day, he will announce that he is going to play in his imagination. When he goes outside to do that, I might watch him through a window for a minute and imagine that he is dispatching galactic evil-doers as he jumps about.

I once asked him whether he cared to tell me what he thinks about when he is playing in his imagination.

“No,” he said.

“I respect that,” I said and went back to wondering what I would do if I ever won the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes.

The Mommy Diaries:

Mommy’s First Trip Away By Emily Eileen Carter hadn’t planned on leaving my son for any reason during his first year of life. Not only because I’m breastfeeding, but because he is my right arm, my heart. Even the thought of leaving Lucas and being apart from him for more than 24 hours at this tender age had seemed unbearable.

I

However, life doesn't always go as planned. When Lucas was just over 3 months old, I received a call from my best friend Natasha, that she has an aggressive form of advanced-stage breast cancer. I was devastated; how unfair for her to be suffering through such a lifealtering disease at only 32. I wept many nights while nursing my son, I felt so helpless to help Natasha. I wanted to fly up to NYC and be with her immediately, hug her, talk with her, be by her side; but with an infant son this trip would be challenging.

No matter what I knew, I had to visit her. I thoroughly debated taking my son with me. However, as much as his auntie would love to see him (and I would prefer him to be at my side) it was just too risky with her formidable chemo regime and low white blood cell count. In addition, I wanted to devote my undivided attention to her and really be present and not distracted by my little one on my short visit.

Leading up to my trip, I grew nervous: Would he notice my absence?

Would he cry all day? Would he be able to sleep? Would I? I realized as the trip grew closer that this trip was probably going to be harder on him than on me.

I departed PTI in early July, my stomach churning as I sat on the tarmac waiting to take off. I knew my little man was in the best hands possible.

His father, along with his grandmothers, auntie, uncle and cousins were surrounding him and caring for him in my absence. Yet my fears and doubts consumed me. In fact, my usual nervousness about flying was dwarfed in light of this larger anxiety of being away from my son. After arriving in NYC, I briskly walked down the street amid towering skyscrapers, I not only noticed the hip New Yorkers, businessmen and tourists, but my eyes gravitated to babies and young children in strollers. I began to second-guess my decision not to bring my son.

Upon arriving at my friend’s apartment, I embraced her in the big bear hug I had been dreaming of over the past few months. We sat, I pumped milk and talked for several hours. We then went wig shopping and out to dinner and a comedy show. It was truly amazing to be at her side, and I grew teary several times as she relayed the frightening and isolating experience of the chemo she was going through.

My husband called my first night to convey that our little man had not gotten his afternoon nap and went to bed 2 hours past his normal bedtime. I was sick with worry. I wanted so badly to be in both places at once. The helpless feeling of not being able to comfort my child wracked my emotions so much I nearly threw up. at all my first night away from my son.

However, when I talked with my mother-in-law the next day, I found out my son was back on his normal play-and-nap routine. What sweet relief!

I relaxed a little, went shopping with my BFF, and we made a slow Italian dinner that night. Once again, I was reassured by a p.m. phone call from my husband that Lucas was doing just fine. Then, of course, I wondered if he missed me at all.

My last morning in New York, I spent some final hours discussing her treatment, her working with cancer, and the impending surgery and radiation treatment. As hard as it had been to leave my little man, I knew as I hugged my friend one last time before leaving that every bit of that stress and anxiety was worth it.

When I returned home that afternoon, my husband swept me up at the airport. He relayed all the details of our Lucas’s past few days. He proudly told me of getting up and changing and feeding him at night all by himself. When we returned, Lucas was napping. We he awoke, I burst into the room scooped him up, then nursed my aching chest. He smiled lazily, not overly excited, as if to say, “Hey mom, what’s the big deal, love you, same as ever.”

You are also growin g so big and long, when I look at your newborn photos I can’t believe you were ever that sm all.

This parenting thin g sure isn’t easy. I wo rry about so many things related to you, because I lov e you so much. But it’s an ad venture, and I am gl ad to be sharing it with you!

very once in a while I hear something come out of the mouths of my children and I think, “Brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?”

Their ideas are so simple, yet entail so much common sense.

As a new school year begins, I thought we could all use some words of wisdom from the children and teens in our lives. I asked students, “How can your mom and dad help you to be successful at school this year?” Their answers are below.

Read them, digest them, share them, and put them to use! Sometimes children can teach us just as much as we teach them.

Harris, age 8 – “Make me do my homework as soon as I get home from school, so I won’t complain later when I have to stop playing to do it.

Sam, age 12 – “Help me when I ask for help and really need it, but let me do things on my own when I don’t ask for help.”

Anna, age 8 – “Give me a huge hug every day before I go to school!”

Aaron, age 5 – “Let me tell you all about my day when I get home.”

Josh, age 11 – “Please don’t sign me up for too many things after school. Sometimes a boy just wants to chill out!”

Caroline, age 7 – “Help teach me the lessons I’m learning in school.”

Javon, age 4 – “Make me eat my fruits and veggies, so I can get the energy I need.”

Claire, age 10 – “If I ask for help when something is hard and I start crying, keep working with me...don’t tell me to stop crying first...it makes me feel bad when you tell me to stop. Sometimes I just need to cry about my homework.”

Caleb, age 18 – “It was great for me when my parents helped me with studying when I was younger."

Nikki, age 6 – “Help me with my homework if it is hard, but also help me unpack my lunchbox, if I have leftover food.” (aka “I might not always like what you pack me for lunch!”)

Jake, age 10 – “Buy me the right school supplies. Like, don't get me those extra erasers, because then I play with them in my desk and it distracts me.”

Sofia, age 14 - “Keep my brother from bothering me while I am doing my homework. I need a quiet studying place.”

Ann Marie, age 8 – “Come to eat lunch with me.”

Wodajo, age 10 – “Let kids be themselves.”

McLean, age 15 – “Be supportive but not over the top…for example, I like it when you all give me encouragement and you are present, but I'm glad you usually don’t push me too hard so that I’m stressed”

Grace, age 9 – “Help me when there is schoolwork I don’t understand.”

Mary Stuart, age 19 – “It helped me when you reinforced the idea of working first, then playing...try to always get homework done first. Also it helps me now in college to have a big calendar with all of my assignments and projects with due dates.”

Emma, age 14 – “Don't get frustrated if we don’t understand the explanation to a question we have about homework, projects, or extra credit. Also when we don’t get the right school supplies ((calculators, rulers dictionaries, etc.)), even if we say we are sure, don’t be upset with us. I know when that happens to me I am already upset with myself, because I can’t use it and I can’t get a new one if it’s expensive, and when you do it makes me even more upset.”

Camille, age 10 – “Let me snack while I do homework. Play school with me while I’m doing my homework. It’s fun for both parents to go school-supply shopping with me.”

Parker, age 11 – “Store an electrical chip in my brain to help me memorize multiplication facts.”

The View from My Section...

Father Knows Best...Or Does He? he answer to this question can depend largely on where you’re getting your information from. Historically, Hollywood has been inclined to mirror society in its depiction of fathers in films and on television. That is, until the most recent decade or so, when the reverse began to occur and instead, society’s beliefs have come to mirror Hollywood’s. This wouldn’t be a problem, except when television shows no longer depict (for the most part) today’s dads, or exhibit the genuine truth about how fathers feel about their roles in the home.

The sitcoms taking place in the 60s and 70s, and even into the 80s and 90s, were pretty accurate in their portrayals of the modern-day father.

However, an interesting trend began to emerge in the mid- to late-90s, and well into the 2000s. Woman began to take up a larger portion of the work force, and they were also beginning to take on more leadership roles within the work force as well. Families were now becoming largely dominated by two-income households. This changed the dynamics not only of the family lifestyle, but also of the family structure itself.

In prior decades, families mostly consisted of dad at work and mom at home with the children. Mom’s roles included that of parenting, managing the home, meals, cleaning, school work, washing clothes, keeping the individual schedules running smoothly without a hitch, packing lunches, PTAs, parent/teacher conferences, managing children’s playtimes, planting flowers, decorating and much more (this is by no means an all-inclusive listing). The fathers, on the other hand were the primary providers as far as the financial needs were concerned, they were the last line of parental discipline in most cases, and took out the garbage, managed the lawn, took care of the cars and walked the family dog each day (again, not all-inclusive here).

In the last twenty years however, changes began to take place. For the women, life became much different. Being in the workforce did not preclude them from having to continue (as best they could) maintaining the same duties as before they entered the work force. In other words, they worked in the office and then came home and worked their “second job.” Men, on the other hand, were also beginning to take on a different role. They were becoming more involved in their children’s lives; coaching little league teams; attending, along with mom, those parent/teacher conferences, actively taking part in school functions, such as plays, holiday parties and so on. A new “softer” side was beginning to appear and be well-received by society.

Then came the Great Recession in December 2007; along with it came a dramatic change in the American family. More and more men were

being “downsized” and left unemployed for long stretches of time. The result: more women were being thrust into the role of sole or primary financial provider for the family. Equally, men were also being pushed into unfamiliar territory. Families began to develop into a much different structure, where some men were taking on the more “traditional” female roles of managing the home and children. The concept of the “Stay-atHome Dad” was becoming increasingly prevalent in the culture.

Interestingly, although it was undeniable this trend was occurring, society was, and still is to some degree, reluctant to acknowledge it completely. Regardless of how well they perform their responsibilities at home, for instance, Stay-at-Home Dads face challenges with the general public by not taking on their “traditional” roles as primary provider. In spite of this, however, these men, as well as the men actively in the work force, are taking on a different style of parenting than was the case in decades past. Many of today’s dads are much more sensitive when it comes to being protective of their children and how they grow up. They’re also more appreciative of those special moments and milestones that naturally occur with their children.

They’re helping more with homework and school projects, and taking a more active role in their children’s activities and lives in general. As this is occurring, a paradigm shift is beginning to take place that we may not fully appreciate for another twenty or thirty years or more. In this paradigm, mothers’ and fathers’ roles are not predefined, and all families do not adhere to strict guidelines in structure and responsibility. It’s quite different from what we’ve come to know for the better part of our entire existence as a nation.

This phenomenon of change is much like change in general, in that it’s not always easy for everyone to immediately accept. However, it doesn’t appear to be a temporary blip in our country’s history. On the contrary, it seems to be the birth of a new look that is taking hold in more and more households and working quite well in many cases. Despite this new look for dads, moms need not be alarmed, for they will always hold the primary soft spot in the family for their children to land on. It’s just in their DNA.

Better Marriages in North Carolina

s the Editor for our biannual publication, Forsyth Woman Engaged! I see a lot of weddings. I see the lavish place settings, the spectacular flowers, the extravagant cakes, and the culmination of thousands of dollars spent to celebrate the union of two people. Planning a wedding takes a lot of work. But after the last song is played and the honeymoon is over, the real work begins—the marriage.

In fact, anyone who has been married can attest to the fact that marriage takes work in order to work! One of the number-one problems in marriage is defined as poor communication. On the flip side, couples who have strong communication skills with one another identify it as an area of major satisfaction! That’s not merely a coincidence.

Better Marriages is a national non-profit with state-level and local-level chapters. They offer members access to resources designed to help strengthen the connection between couples.

The Winston-Salem chapter of Better Marriages North Carolina is working hard to make sure that the wedding is just the first page in a lifetime of celebration between two people. They encourage couples to invest in their marriage as the most important thing they can do for one another. But this organization isn’t just for newlyweds! While they provide resources for pre-marriage, they also offer services for wellestablished couples. It is an organization designed for couples at any and every stage of their relationship. It is a support group for any couple who wants to build a stronger and healthier marriage.

Couples who participate can learn so much from one another. Better Marriages is not marriage counseling, but it provides an opportunity for couples to share. Jean Larson, one of the group’s members, shared, “Someone in the group may suggest a conversation on ‘holiday stress.’

The leader couple will initiate discussion around the topic while couples can use questions asked to fuel private discussion, or they can share openly with the group.”

Better Marriages hosts monthly events in the Winston-Salem area, as well as regional events across the state several times a year. Their next event is on September 16th and all couples are invited to attend! The discussion will be led by Ana Tampanna, a professional relationship coach, and will be called “Rituals, Intimacy, and Family Culture.”

“The program will be interactive,” shared Ana Tampanna. “We will be discussing these three important parts of the family. Every couple and family has their own rituals which couples will be challenged to define.

We will discuss how rituals play a part in our daily lives, as well as the moments we want to celebrate.”

Ms. Tampanna also will lead a discussion on intimacy. “Most people think of intimacy as sex,” said Ms. Tampanna. “Sex is not necessarily intimacy; however, true intimacy can lead to sex or provide deep connection without sex. There are experiences which touch and move people deeply, communicating special caring.”

Ms. Tampanna also plans to engage the audience in a discussion on family culture. “How can we be intentional with our family culture?

Is the impact on our children and others what we want our family culture to be?”

This discussion will hopefully lead to awareness and, if necessary, changes that will strengthen the marriage as well as the family.

TEACHERS, FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT,

MAKING A PROFOUND DIFFERENCE

By Lisa S.T. Doss n the first day of school, a life-changing event can occur when a child walks through the doorway of a classroom. Across one school year as elementary students, Dawn Wooten and Alison Flippen found inspiration and learned life-long skills extending into adulthood. As successful educators in our Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools themselves, they both give credit to their former teachers: either Mrs. JoAnne Vannoy North Goetz, or her sister, Mrs. Peggy Hawkins, in the sweetest chapter of their lives—retirement.

In the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, Dawn Wooten has earned the title of teacher, principal, and educational consultant during 40 years. Her life changed in the late 1950s when she entered Miss Vannoy North’s fourth-grade class at Union Cross Elementary School.

By commemorating her favorite teacher in retirement, Dawn recalled that one special year by writing an article titled, “The Pink Angora Sweater.” Dawn writes, “We came from farm families and blue- collar workers who wanted to live out in the ‘country.’ Our life was simple and uncomplicated. Thus, Miss Vannoy was the nearest thing to class, charm, intelligence, beauty and warmth that we had ever seen. You knew you had arrived if you were fortunate enough to end up in her fourth-grade class. At the age of ten, I did not have any idea what effect she would have on me or my future. I remembered everything about her, and that was who I wanted to be.”

Dawn Wooten's first appointment as principal was at Philo Middle School. On her staff, she was surprised to find Mrs. JoAnne Vannoy North Goetz and her sister, Mrs. Peggy Hawkins. During a private lunch, JoAnne's advice of “do what is right and best for the children” guided Dawn across 25 years as a principal. “I do not know how many students these two ladies have touched in positive ways. I believe they did their best, and their values represent thousands of other wonderful teachers who also love their students and guide them with a firm hand,” writes Wooten.

the same cloth. Peggy worked tirelessly to be the very best teacher she could be every single day. I think Joanne, as big sister, had imprinted Peggy from an early age and those qualities were passed on to Peggy’s students. Even today, when I run across former Philo students, they always talk about Mrs. Hawkins and Mrs. Vannoy North Goetz.”

On January 18th, 2014, the headline, “Alison Flippen Named Union Cross Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year,” appeared in the Winston Salem Journal. Of all the teachers who have entered Alison’s life, she credited the moment to her fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Peggy Hawkins. She recalled her former teacher’s classroom and chose to emulate its nurturing community environment with her own students.

Alison shared, “Mrs. Hawkins was worth remembering. I have a vivid memory of her classroom. I don’t remember working out of workbooks or completing ditto sheets. I remember her projects, and feeling like we were a classroom family.” Despite meeting Peggy in 1985, the secrets to a successful classroom remain genuinely effective today.

Alison has been teaching for 15 years.

Hawkins was touched to be mentioned in such an important achievement. She shares, “I taught grades first through sixth for 31 years. I loved being a teacher. The most rewarding moment is seeing your former students and giving them a hug in a store. I retired in 1994 with a wonderful taste in my mouth, and blessed with wonderful students.”

The Dreaded Junior Year

asp, the rumors are true! Once students cross that invisible line as upper- classmen, the most challenging year of high school begins. Yes, the year is comprised of intense classes and serious teachers, college preparation and visitations, and, lastly, balancing obligations and having fun. By knowing the expectations in advance and creating a tangible plan, Juniors can juggle all of the components with relative ease.

Organization and Time Management From the first day of school, Juniors noticed a change in the air. Perhaps, classes were described as “more challenging,” or “faster paced,” and teachers appeared more serious. Crossing over to become an upper-classman required added responsibility and expectation; therefore, teachers are, in fact, preparing their students for the demands of college and life beyond high school.

Reflecting upon the Sophomore year, students learned how to balance classes, extracurricular activities, community and church service with the need to socialize with family, friends, and each other. The Junior year adds studying for college entrance exams, attending college fairs and meetings, and a fair amount of research. Students can create a visual timeline of each day’s activities to truly see how their time is constructively used.

Sacrificing an after-school activity may be essential to ensure there is enough time to complete homework, study for tests and quizzes, and prepare for one or two college entrance exams. Creating a workable, consistent study plan in the evenings, Monday through Thursday and Sunday, will keep students on schedule without feeling overly stressed.

SAT and ACT Testing Believe it or not, history, English, language, and math teachers have been preparing students for 50 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

the SAT for years. Lucky for Juniors, English teachers will be focusing on developing and practicing those writing skills for the state exam; therefore, students need to pay attention for two reasons. Avid readers will have an advantage in studying for the SAT test, since they already have a grand knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and an established extensive vocabulary. Lastly, students who successfully passed algebra and geometry will undoubtedly find the math portion challenging, but familiar.

Since the big, cumbersome SAT book may appear daunting, some students may find success in signing up for a structured SAT class. This will establish a studying schedule, practice and test-taking tips, and a feeling of confidence during the official test.

In addition, The College Board website offers free practice exams.

Decide today on a date to take the Spring 2015 SAT test. It will provide students with a fixed deadline to prepare for that date, and allow time to retest for an improved score.

Research college entrance expectations to determine whether taking the ACT test would add value to an application.

Big Decisions Most students have been thinking about their future since childhood. The time has arrived to make important decisions.

There will be college fairs, meetings with admissions counselors, and trips to visit nearby colleges.

•Keep business cards of all admissions counselors in an accessible location.

•Create a pro and con list of favorite schools. By April, students should make a decision on which schools they intend to apply to.

•Talk about college preparation with

guidance counselors, and openly discuss concerns with family members and friends.

Portfolio Development Today’s students need to create a document, similar to a resume, which identifies academic classes, awards, athletic, musical, and/or artistic achievements; work experiences including internships; volunteer and community service; and personal hobbies and interests. A portfolio will complement a resume by including certificates, letters of recommendation, and examples of work.

By next summer, students will be writing college essays, receiving recommendation letters from teachers, and preparing to mail college admission packets by October or November 2015 for early acceptance.

Having Fun! The Junior year will be challenging and difficult, a year of sacrifice and learning experiences. There will be numerous opportunities to take a well-needed break from studying and have fun. Yes, to live a balanced life, students must spend time with family and friends. As students become college Freshman, memories of the Junior year may arise. Looking back, students will be glad they made it through with a great plan and supportive family and friends!

Investing in Our Students! ollege Knowledge is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization hosting private college fairs and awarding substantial scholarships to North Carolina students.

Scholarships awarded range from $2,500 to $10,000. These scholarships are granted to students who successfully pursue and obtain an undergraduate or graduate diploma. Students are registered at the fairs and then must complete essential criteria, at which time the organization will transfer award funds to the student’s chosen college or university. The college or university must be participating in College Knowledge programs in order for any program monies to transfer on behalf of a student.

The mission of College Knowledge is to provide substantial scholarships to students, thereby reducing college loan debt. Our innovative approach offers an exclusive opportunity for students and parents to comfortably spearhead their interest through exploring alternatives presented by colleges and universities at each fair. College Knowledge is strategically designed to present a blueprint for students to follow, with reasonable criteria that do not require an essay and without a hidden agenda.

The goals and objectives of College Knowledge are to invest in our students for generations, as they are the entrepreneurs who will forge the future. The significant difference between College Knowledge private college fairs and other fairs nationwide is the immediate award of substantial scholarships to students at every event.

Universities and colleges are invited to participate in fairs by qualifying invitation. This year’s 2014 schedule offers two events in the fall: September 16th and November 11th from 4–7 p.m. Universities register to participate and then receive event folders identifying venue

and other details of each fair. Since the fairs are hosted in central North Carolina, students from surrounding counties may attend and participate at no cost and with no essay.

Colleges and universities continue to increase tuition beyond the rate of inflation.

College students are saddled with crippling debt of more than $1 trillion in student loans. College loans are not forgiven and may be repaid through garnished wages, as well as social security benefits. Excessive student borrowing is likened to risky mortgages.

College Knowledge offers financial alternatives, enabling students to complete post-graduate studies while minimizing loans.

Criteria for students awarded scholarships include: • Registration at College Knowledge private fairs; • GPA of 2.5 or higher; • Family combined income of less than $110k annually; • Interview with CEO, VP, or CMO of the College Knowledge organization; • Presentation at a future College Knowledge fair; • Assisting and advocating at two private College Knowledge fairs; • Providing a copy of acceptance letter, financial award letter, and proof of deposit; • Completing and obtaining undergraduate/graduate degree, or paying back 50% of award granted.

Consequently, students need to ask their selected university’s admission office if they participate with College Knowledge programs.

Parent Portal – Are You Making The MOST of It?

By Kelly Melang wonderful time of the year; school’s right around the corner, as we feel the hint of cooler weather. Every parent plans on starting the school year off right, and one weapon in our arsenals is Powerschool Parent Portal.

Parent Portal is a great online database, allowing parents to keep track of their children’s academics, catching problems before they start, not when the first progress report comes home. This amazing tool, with special hints and tricks, can make your child smarter and more responsible when it comes to school work and grades.

It’s the most

Logging In, the home base of Parent Portal, is specific to your school and is easily accessed through the school’s website. A User-name and Password are created by the school administrator. If you have two children in the school system, both children will be under one login. If you do not see both children, contact the administrator of the school of the missing child for instructions on adding them to your Account.

Students are listed in alphabetical order. Powerschool Parent Portal accounts go inactive once the school year is complete, coming back online October 1st.

The Powerschool Parent Portal Landing Page is your Home Page for students. If you have more than one student in the system, in the left-hand corner you’ll see both names. Simply click on the child’s name and the system with the update of their current grades.

Grades are shown by the semester, with the cumulative grade showing at the end. Columns indicate semester (S1, S2.)

Click on the semester grade, drilling down to a detail page showing you how the grade is calculated. This includes testing, assignments and missing assignments.

If you have any questions regarding any part of the grade, click on the teacher’s name to view their e-mail address.

A great resource for any parent is the E-mail Notifications Section of the Landing Page. This allows you to set up e-mail notifications for many different parts of the student’s school year. First, click on settings and make sure a current contact e-mail is included with your user account. Click on e-mail

notifications and a list of different alerts will be available: • a summary of current grades and attendance.

• a detailed report showing assignment scores for each class.

• a detailed report of school attendance.

• the account balance.

• school alerts.

Once choosing what alerts are important, you can set up the frequency of e-mails arriving in your inbox: • never • weekly • every two months • monthly • daily E-mail alerts also allow you additional e-mail addresses for these reports; both parents and the student receive regular updates of school progress. When adding additional e-mail addresses to the account, separate them with commas.

Many parents have a busy work life, making it difficult to spend quality time with teachers. Powerschool Parent Portal has a Teacher Comment Page on the Landing Page, allowing teachers to leave comments regarding a student’s behavior or achievement. For parents of high school students, this comments area also shows dropped classes with comments. To interact with the teacher regarding comments, click on the teacher’s name for their e-mail address.

Finally, Test Results from the Navigation Menu helps you review each Standardized Test by school year. Included in this information is Section, Score Group, Raw Score and Scaled Score. Simply click on the year to view the results.

Using Parent Portal effectively from the beginning of the school year ensures that everyone starts off, and stays on the right track.

The Milestones that Matter

worried that preschool won’t be able to keep my children intellectually stimulated,” she said to me.

“Hmmm,” I said.

“Because they are so advanced, you know. I’ve been keeping a journal.”

She waived an imaginary pen in the air. “Oh, hmmm,” I said.

And there she is, the Over-achiever Mom. Most of us know one.

Wound tighter than a top, she raises the bar to unattainable heights.

As a mother, she is crafty, well read and organized, and her children are impeccably groomed. Her walls are adorned with annual family portraits right out of Vanity Fair, above shelves lined with scrapbooks Martha Stewart would envy!

“SHE” is not ME. Our baby books are incomplete. Our family portraits (never annual) boast at least one bad haircut, two goofy smiles, and no one is ever looking in the same direction. Her children wash up before dinner, always use their manners and take turns when speaking. In our house the children kiss our cheeks with sticky faces bearing gifts of lightning bug jars or pretty rocks, and the conversations are lively.

I mark my children’s height on the wall in the mud room. She has meticulously chronicled her children’s developmental milestones with 60 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

graphs and charts in handmade journals. As impressive as that is, she is not like most of us.

Do we need to play less and worry more?

“Hmmmm,” I don’t think so.

Milestones are important, as a Child Development professional I get it. I have listed a few of my favorite books below. These provide parents benchmarks in order to monitor their child’s typical development. I have taught hundreds of children and raised a few; still I have never met a “typical” child. In fact, I realized early on that neither of my children attained a single milestone “on time.”

Some were earlier, some later; none were reached at the same as their sibling reached theirs. Is this indicative of something serious?

Of course not.

Milestones are like Pirates’ Codes— “More like guidelines than actual rules.”

Age, weight, gender, exposure, necessity, diet and nutrition, physical, cognitive, social and emotional factors will influence exactly “when” your child will accomplish “what.” But trust that they will get there, in most cases in their own good time. And you will be there to see it, with or without your journal and pen. What matters is that you were there.

Milestones and memories make up the story of our lives.

Instead of keeping graphs and charts, in this family we decided to create a time capsule for each child. Okay, so it’s really a shoebox. It is stuffed with memories. Some items might be: pop culture trivia from the

day they were born (price of gas, #1 song, president etc…), a hand-written letter from Mom and Dad, a mix tape or CD from their childhood, a variety of special photos, quotes, family stories, stories about them, something they wrote when they were little and a treasure or two. These boxes are mine to keep until they get married. On their wedding day I will wrap their box in pretty paper and hide it among the other gifts.

Whether you keep track of your child’s milestones in a journal, on a wall, or in a time capsule, is up to you. Our children are grown now. It has been one fun ride, and I have enjoyed every minute. Try not to over-worry, remember the Over- achiever Mom? Her kids are also amazing, but sometimes I wonder if she spent so much time worrying about the rules and goals that she missed the game entirely.

High School How to Help Your Tech-Savvy Child Navigate Social Media

If your children don’t already use Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and/or Twitter, chances are it’s only a matter of time before they’ll want to join the sea of social networking. That’s not such a bad thing, as long as they are aware of the unintended consequences associated with using these sites. Even if your child is the first person you turn to for help setting up your new tablet, you can still help guide him/her through the complex process of learning how to use social media effectively and sensibly. To do so, consider discussing the five W’s: who, what, when, where and why.

Who: Do your children really know who is on the other end of their communication?

Information shared electronically may go to places the sender did not intend. Any text, image or video that is posted to a social media site can end up on the screens of prospective employers and others.

Privacy settings can be breached, and not usually by a users’ friends.

Moreover, if your children can’t verify that they know—on a personal level—to whom they are talking, they should probably cut communication ties.

What: Let’s talk about what’s being sent and received by your children.

Cyberbullying and sexting are some of those dreadful, but necessary, topics to discuss with your children. Cyberbullying should be talked about in terms of being either a victim or an instigator. In some school districts, cyberbullying can lead to disciplinary consequences, even if it occurs off school grounds. Also, does your teen know that sexting can carry legal penalties under some conditions?

When: Just because electronics can be used 24/7 doesn’t mean they should be.

Many parents employ a “cellphones off at bedtime” policy. Even if your children don’t routinely talk or text at 2 a.m., their friends might forsythfamilymagazine.com 64 •• forsythfamilymagazine.com 64

and may try to reach them. Keeping the phones off—and perhaps in care of mom and dad for the night—prevents that from happening.

This guideline can be adjusted according to the age and maturity level of the child. Keep in mind that recent studies suggest that 24/7 cellphone availability is not healthy for adults, either.

Where: There’s a time—and a place—for everything.

You may also want to establish electronics-free zones. Mealtimes, family devotions, game nights and/or personal conversations can be times when it’s helpful and appropriate to establish a pattern of all family members (parents, too) silencing their electronic gadgets. It’s not that electronics are inherently bad; however, they can distract us from doing other things that are important.

Why: The most important W of all…. Help teach your child why it’s important to make good choices when communicating online, so that it sticks.

Discuss what kind of internet “image” your children want to have. Ask them to think of three adjectives they would like to describe their image. Dear Teens: Solve Worry and Stress With a “Workable Plan!”

Srespective order, about schoolwork, especially organization and ix hundred school students said they worried the most, in

time-management skills, keeping up with classes, and getting good grades; social issues, such as fitting in, having friends, being judged, or being teased; and one of four claimed that third on the list was having a good social and personal image. With so many thoughts zooming around in teenagers’ minds, they are obviously still learning how to juggle the numerous responsibilities on their shoulders. The answer is never simple, but with calm guidance and a great “plan” in place, teens can become confident students and remarkable leaders.

Create a Working Plan By living in the present moment, students often avoid thinking about the events that occurred in the past, or the eventual arrival of the future. Over the years of being a student, some means of eluding responsibility will always fail, such as procrastination and cramming.

While it may be hard to implement initially, a working plan is essential for student success. Promise! Consider the following questions: 1. Think about your after-school schedule Monday through Thursday, including all clubs, organizations, community service projects, church responsibilities, and a part-time job or an internship.

Are there any school or work obligations during the weekend?

To visualize your schedule, use a desk calendar.

2. How much time is needed to complete homework, reread notes, or correct quizzes or tests on a given night? Using your calendar as a guide, do you have enough time to complete school work, factoring in your extracurricular activities and/or practice schedule? Sometimes, students must sacrifice a few activities to reduce stress levels.

3. While organizations, clubs, church, and community service provide opportunities for socialization, is there time during the week for your family, friends and yourself, too?

Creating a workable plan is a promise to yourself. By setting boundaries and following a schedule, there will be room for all the important aspects of high school life, especially eating well and exercising, laughter and a good night’s sleep.

Manage Time and Organize Reflection is a tool to help students improve upon their strengths and weaknesses. How many times have you said, “That project turned out great! I’m glad I started early!” It’s easy to become frustrated by a mistake or a low grade; however, have you ever “reflected” upon a project, decided to do things differently next time, and noticed that tweaking your method resulted in a better grade?

What makes you a great student? Perhaps you can easily find your notes, which are sequentially dated and have a headline, or you consistently record your assignments in one location. What areas do you need to improve upon? Many students find they are easily distracted or become too sleepy during homework sessions.

The following tips may help.

If deadlines sneak up unexpectedly, would using a dry-erase board or a desk calendar help you to visually be aware of due dates? In addition, starting a project immediately and setting deadlines for completion allows extra time to check for errors.

Would studying your hardest subject first and your favorite subject last keep you focused?

If easily distracted, could you study at the kitchen or dining room table for 50-minute stretches and take 10-minute breaks?

Rereading notes and handouts after class, and correcting or reviewing all quizzes and tests are two strategies that help students learn material for long- term understanding. While this method may add 10 additional minutes of studying per subject, it eliminates the bad habit of cramming a substantial amount of information days before a test.

Tweak the Plan Obviously, the plan is not going to be perfect after the first “tweak.”

Creating a workable plan will help teens learn more about themselves, and their efforts will be noticed by teachers, coaches, parents and peers. While stress is exhausting, a plan has the potential to boost confidence, grades and overall well-being. Don’t give up! Instead, determine what is wrong and come up with a solution. A workable plan is like a dance; once the rhythm begins, all of the steps will soon fall into place.

Suzie Phelan has witnessed firsthand the changing patterns of home décor. As the owner and Seamstress of Stitches, Phelan has seen the progression from formal dining and living rooms to homes with a more comfortable/everyday approach.

“People like the feel of a more casual home now, as opposed to 25 years ago,” said Phelan. “In the past, homes had a dining room that people used on special occasions, like Christmas. Originally from a rural town in Maine, Phelan initially learned how to sew on a field trip to the local 4-H camp. After completing her collegiate studies in business, Suzie moved to North Carolina and began to decorate her own home. “I called for an estimate on window treatments and they gave me an exorbitant price,” said Phelan.

“So I decided I would do it myself.”

Little did Phelan know her do-it-yourself attitude would launch a new career. “After completing my project, the neighbor wanted me to do her windows,” said Phelan. “I turned her down many times over several months, until she came to my doorstep with fabric in hand and said, ‘I know you can sew well enough.’”

NC 2-1-1 Offers Information on Local services, Businesses and Volunteer Opportunities

By Karen Holbrook hen residents of Forsyth County find themselves in need, there is one service that allows them a quick solution. NC 2-1-1 is a service that assists users with connecting to local services, such as food pantries, tobacco cessation resources and school supplies.

Sponsored by the United Way, 2-1-1 offers an easy way to gain access to information without having to search for hours.

Accessible through telephone or internet, NC 2-1-1 aims to be as user-friendly as possible.

To use NC 2-1-1, callers simply dial the number and they are connected, 24-hours a day, with multi-lingual staff to help them locate the service they desire. Similar to the concept of 9-1-1 for emergencies and 4-1-1 for directory assistance, 2-1-1 connects people to community services.

The Web version of the system works by allowing users to either scroll the list of common search words or enter their specific search request to find information. If a user is looking for information regarding After School programs, they would click the link that takes them to a list of facilities offering those programs. They can also limit results by listing a zip code and distance.

Once users find a facility or service they are looking for, they can click that business’s name and find detailed information. An overview, contacts and detailed information about the organization is available, as well as a Web site, if applicable.

In 1999, the United Way organization used their commitment to funding information and referral services to take initiative in the structuring of a 2-1-1 system. To begin organization of the call system, the United Way had to first submit an application through the North Carolina Public Utilities Commission. Zachary Glontz – Young Entrepreneur

I was 13, the last thing on my mind was starting my own business. Outside of the occasional babysitting job, I was pretty content to do a few chores to earn my allowance. While 13 is a fairly young age for anyone to consider running a company, Zachary Glontz did just that, when he started Animal Doodies.

What could make a young man take such a step? “Since I was a little child, I always admired entrepreneurs like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs,” said Zachary. “I knew even then that I had to start my own business to learn how to manage clients, market my ideas and manage employees. If I wanted to be successful, I had to find a niche that needed to be filled. This is just the beginning. This is where I learn how to be a successful businessman one day.”

Glontz came up with the idea for Animal Doodies while in his own yard. “My stepdad, Mark Snow, always asked me to clean up the poop in the back yard, so my little brother could play out there,” said Zachary.

“While I was cleaning the yard one day, it clicked! I could make money cleaning up dog waste for others.”

Coming up with a name was a bit of a challenge for the fledgling company.

“At first, the name was Cacacollectors,” said Zachary. “My uncle had actually come up with that name. For some reason, people didn’t really understand the name, and no one was signing up for the service. It was at that time that I decided to change it to Animal Doodies. Since then, the name change has made all the difference in the world.”

Getting the word out began with the basics. “We originally got our few first customers using

flyers,” said Zachary. “The first time I put out 50 flyers, and the next thing I knew, someone gave us a call. After the flyer period, the website started to kick in. I also advertised on Small Business Saturday, and I had a booth at the AARF Easter Egg Hunt. The rest of my customers found us using our website.”

Now in its third year, Animal Doodies has gone from a staff of one to four. Zachary’s employees all attend West Forsyth High School, where he is also a student. His grandmother was happy when Zachary got his driver’s license, as she was the one who drove him from job to job on weekends.

Animal Doodies offers several options to meet their clients’ needs.

They currently service the communities of Clemmons, Lewisville and Winston-Salem. Fees are based on the number of dogs and the frequency requested. The most popular option is a weekly yard cleaning, which costs $10 for one dog, going up in increments to $26 for five dogs. The client can also choose to receive bi-monthly service, where the price for one dog starts at $12, up to $28 for five dogs; monthly service starting at $14 up to $30; or a one-time service from $40 to $48.

Not content to stop there, Animal Doodies is now offering their services to cat owners as well. “We recently started a cat litter cleanup,” said Zachary. “This is where the homeowner places the litter box on the front porch during the scheduled day and we come by and remove the cat waste from the litter box.”

Zachary and his employees seem willing to take on a number of different projects, including working for Wells Fargo cleaning up after the horses during a parade for A&T State University.

Zachary's next venture is to contact local apartment complexes to see if they can use Animal Doodies’ services. It is this willingness to expand the business and work hard that will continue to make this young entrepreneur successful in the business world.

Hospice & Palliative CareCenter

yan Wood touched countless individuals during his lifetime—a lifetime we all know to have been cut way too short. He courageously battled cancer until January 10th, 2013, and since then, Ryan has been a source of strength for others battling disease and an inspiration for all those who know his story. There is no way to relate to the pain of losing a child unless you have suffered a similar loss, but one thing that ties us all together is the comfort we feel when Hospice is involved with our loved ones’ care.

“Like so many others, I thought Hospice was there to help with end-of-life care,” said Robin Bralley, Ryan’s aunt. “To make the patient as comfortable as possible and support the family in the care of their loved one during that process. Hospice & Palliative CareCenter is so much more than people think. They are there to help people live to the fullest until the very end, and are there to support families beyond the passing of a loved one. Unfortunately, the need for Hospice has touched my family too many times; but, Hospice & Pallative CareCenter has been there every time. My father’s second wife, my dear grandmother, my aunt and my teenage nephew have all been under the care of Hospice. Loss of a loved one is always difficult, but the loss of a young person like my nephew is almost unbearable. I witnessed first-hand the care they provided to my brother and his family during Ryan’s passing and the care and concern since. They truly are angels on Earth!”

Many of those touched by the care received at Hospice are unfamiliar with all they offer until care and assistance is needed. “Now that I have had first-hand experience with Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, I have learned that they support the patient, but also the family,” said Caroline Wood, Ryan’s mother. “The nurses were professional and caring, and I was impressed by the fast response when we were referred to Hospice. They cared for our 16-year-old son, Ryan. Ryan was only under Hospice care for four days before he passed away, but in that short time, Hospice came in and did everything that they could to make him comfortable. They delivered supplies, and nurses came in to check on him. They sent a chaplain to talk to Ryan and to us as a family. They offered support for Ryan, and support for us as parents and caregivers. Hospice let us know that they would be there for us after Ryan was no longer here. Hospice supports the patient and the family physically and spiritually.”

What most people do not know is how much Hospice assists families, even after their loved ones have passed away. “Since Ryan was only under Hospice care for four days, we did not have time to experience much of the patient care part of their services,” said Caroline.

“Most of my experience with Hospice has been with grief counseling services, since Ryan has been gone. I knew right away that losing my son was more than I could cope with on my own, so I had my first meeting with a Hospice grief counselor 2–3 weeks after Ryan passed. Our daughter, Ryan’s 12-year-old sister, has gone through grief counseling at Hospice as well.

They have counselors that specialize in helping children.”

There is no time frame in place for getting past the grief you feel when you lose a loved one, and Hospice understands that some people will never fully move on, but their support and guidance is there as long as necessary. “Ryan has now been gone for almost 19 months, and I still see my counselor every eight weeks or so,” said Carolina. “Grief counseling has helped me to learn what I can do, what is just too painful, that there is no time limit and grief is different for everyone. Honestly, I believe that my counselor has kept me from going crazy. Losing a child, in my opinion, is the most horrible thing that any human being can go through, and without my counselor’s knowledge and guidance, I know that I would be swallowed up by my pain. I have a daughter, and I have to keep going for her. Without professional help through grief counseling services at Hospice, I would not be able to keep going for her.”

Ryan’s family has inspired many others, and their ability to be there for others is truly heartwarming. “Ryan left a hole that will never go away,” said Caroline. “Through groups and Camp Carousel, we have met many other bereaved parents that we have bonded with. Only those that have been through the loss of a child can relate and understand the pain that we live with every minute of every day. From the day that we got Ryan's diagnosis, it has been a roller coaster of emotions. We have had tremendous support from family and friends. Even with all of the support, it has been difficult finding an outlet for our emotions. Most people don’t want to hear all of the dark, deeply personal and ugly sides of cancer and death. Hospice has given us a safe place to go to talk openly about our emotions. There is no judgment, only compassion, understanding and validation.”

Coming Together The Valerie Anne Moser Memorial Golf Tournament Spreads Love around the World

hen Beverly Moser speaks about the annual event that honors the memory of her young daughter, and also benefits children in another country, you immediately understand, and feel her passion for, this labor of love that has come full circle.

Beverly and Dave Moser’s daughter, Valerie, drowned in a backyard pool in July of 2000 at the tender age of three. The family— which includes Valerie’s twin brother, another brother and two sisters— was fortunate to have a wonderful friend, Dan Toohey, who helped them walk through their grief and had the idea of launching a memorial golf tournament. His initial vision was to raise between $8,000 and $10,000, which they accomplished the very first year! Even though the Valerie Anne Moser Memorial Golf Tournament benefits local groups as well, its largest impact can be felt far away in Utraula, India.

“On this side of the world we’re playing golf and on the other side of the world lives are being saved,” says Beverly, who is always amazed at the success of the golf tournament, which began in 2000 and continues to grow larger each year.

Dave Moser had been involved in a mission trip to India and immediately thought of the Prem Sewa Hospital and Emmanuel Church School when he and Beverly were searching for the perfect tribute to their daughter. The funds donated from the golf tournament have been used by the hospital for a variety of community outreach programs— including a much-needed eye clinic and scholarships for the children of hospital workers—as well as the creation of a neonatal unit which bears the title “Valerie Anne Moser Neonatal Unit” proudly displayed above the entrance.

Traditionally held the first Friday in October at Salem Glen Golf & Country Club in Clemmons, NC, the 2014 version of the Valerie Anne Moser Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for October 3rd. The Mosers hope that not only will the tournament be at full capacity this fall, but that they can increase corporate sponsorships to promote local businesses and widen the spirit of the event within the community.

“The tournament reaches a lot of people,” says Beverly.

“People always say it is such a joyful experience. It is just so full of joy.”

For the Moser family, their annual event not only raises awareness of how much outreach is needed around the world, but it also reaffirms that even through the most tragic events can come a shining light!

Keep the Shelves Stocked Throughout the Year, How You Can Help the WSFC School’s Educator Warehouse Story and Pictures by: Maria Glazener hile the stores fill their shelves with holiday decorations (already?) and another school year is underway, there is still a need for school supplies at The Educator Warehouse.

“Just because all of the initial school supplies have been bought that doesn’t mean teachers and students will not need them further into the school year,” said Karel Chandler, chair of the Educator Warehouse. The continuous budget restrictions make it harder for teachers to stock their classrooms each year. “We try to provide much needed resources for teachers throughout the year by giving them an opportunity to shop at the warehouse, four times a year, once each quarter. We would not be able to keep the Educator Warehouse going without the incredible support of our sponsors, donations and volunteers.”

The BB&T Lighthouse Project funded money, equipment and time to update computer software and organize and put together shelving units for storage earlier this year.

Many other local businesses help out each year including Triad Orthodontics, Lowes Hardware, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Joanne’s Fabrics and the Ingredion Plant all made donations to the Educator Warehouse. And businesses are not the only ones donating; many retiring teachers donate their books and teaching materials to help new teachers just entering the profession. Some donations come from unlikely sources; one of the largest private donations came from Dragon Slayer Motorcycle Club.

Family Fun Planned for FIESTA

owntown Winston-Salem is once again going to take on a Latin flair and a salsa beat for the 22nd Annual FIESTA Street Festival. On Saturday, September 13th, the Hispanic League will hold their FIESTA Street Festival, sponsored by Nationwide Insurance, on 4th Street, Poplar Street, Spruce Street, Holly Avenue and at Winston Square Park. More than 25,000 people brought downtown Winston-Salem to life last year with Hispanic/Latino live music, arts and crafts, authentic food vendors, a parade of flags and the super fun children’s area.

New to Fiesta this year is the “Running of the Bulls.” The Camel City Thrashers, Winston-Salem’s Roller Derby team, will be playing the role of “the bulls” as they playfully chase runners down Holly Avenue and up Spruce Street. Whoever gets to the finish line first without being tagged is the winner.

The Kilpatrick Townsend Children’s Area will be at Winston Square Park, located at 310 N. Marshall Street. Plan to bring your family for the day from 12–7 p.m. The area includes a Children’s Stage with local, live acts, including Ballet Folklorico Guadalupano, Flamingo guitarist Eudelio Solis, Grupo Panailli, Ashley Elementary students, and even a Kids’ Zumbathon. The Children’s Area will also have an arts and crafts station, face painting, piñatas, balloon art and Clifford the Big Red Dog to keep the children entertained. Other highlights will include the Forsyth County Public Library Book Mobile, children’s building projects with Home Depot and three large inflatables provided by the Winston-Salem Dash.

How to Savor and Save Those Fun, Family-filled, Sunshiny, Summer Days

ush, rush, rush. As another school year begins and your daily norm turns into a regimented schedule of coming and going, you think to yourself, where did those long days of summer go? Were we not just at the beach, or lake, or pool, enjoying the lazy, hazy days of summer? Wasn’t I just soaking in the sunshine and eating fresh, ripe vegetables?

All too soon, the seasons pass and that glorious summer vacation will be just a memory. Memories you will certainly want to preserve, but with everyone living in the fast lane, where will you find the time to document your life’s events?

Technology can certainly be your best friend in chronicling your summer vacation and your day-today life. Many applications, or “apps,” are available to help you stay on top of your life’s scrapbook and, best of all, many of these programs are easy to use!

Tripbook is an app that is available on iTunes and helps chronicle your trip by adding photo locations and allowing you to add text and comments along the way. The premise is to be able to share your journey with family and friends in a collage form, on Facebook, or through e-mail.

Google+ has a feature that creates a timeline story of your trip for you, by arranging photos and using your location spots as a way to remember your travels. Google does this for you and then you can add, delete or enhance the info and also send it out to friends and family.

Everalbum is an app that is available on both Android and iPhones. This app allows you to back up your photos and store them on the cloud. You access your photos everywhere you go. You can also upgrade this app for editing options.

Bookstome is a subscription service that automatically pulls your Instagram photos, lays them out and then prints them into a hard-cover book. You can get them monthly or quarterly, and they ship for free. You can also tag photos you do not want to include. You can include up to 320 photos per album!

Groovebook is an app that will automatically send you a photobook of your photos each month. You can upload up to 100 of your photos from your phone and receive a 4.5 x 6.5 photo book for just $2.99, including shipping and handling.

Freeprints is an app where you can order 1,000 free 4 x 6 photos a year (85 photos a month). You order the photos directly from your phone and only pay shipping. You can easily access your photos from Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, Dropbox and Picasa.

You can also order different-sized photos at a reasonable price.

The photos arrive printed on quality photo paper. The process is super easy and a great way to print out photos from summer family outings and throughout the year!

ou would never guess by walking into the Clemmons Food Pantry building that 10 years ago the pantry was only the dream of a few dedicated community members in a Sunday school class at Clemmons United Methodist Church.

“Each year, our Sunday school class would adopt a family at Christmas to help with food and gifts,” said Linda Shawcross, a member of the Spiritual Growth Sunday School class and founding food pantry volunteer. “One year, we had the thought that people really need more help than just one week a year.”

From that moment, the class turned the dream of running a food pantry into a reality. The Clemmons Food Pantry has grown from serving 30 clients during the first three months the doors were open in 2004 to now serving more than 600 families a month.

Scott Smith, the pantry’s Board President, explained that major economic and employment shifts greatly increased the number of people served. Those 600 families represent an average of 1,400 individuals – half of which are children.

“What many people do not realize is the pantry serves clients throughout Forsyth County,” said Smith. “As jobs were downsized or lost, the families that walked through our doors often needed assistance for the first time in their lives. Moms, dads and grandparents sought help from across the community. They needed help, and we were able to respond because of the support we received from the community.”

In September, the Clemmons Food Pantry, now a separate nonprofit organization, celebrates its 10th anniversary. Like in 2004, pantry shelves are kept stocked through food drives from local organizations and neighborhoods and financial contributions from individuals, local faith communities and area businesses. In addition, the pantry is a partner agency with Second Harvest Food Bank and receives salvage products from local businesses like Food Lion, Lowes Foods, Big Lots and Panera. Each year, the pantry provides more than 330,000 pounds of food to Forsyth County community members.

This year, the pantry finally outgrew the 650 square-foot-space it had been in for nearly 10 years. The new space is bigger, brighter and offers clients a more comfortable waiting area. “While the most basic purpose of the pantry is to provide supplemental food to families, we also believe everyone should be treated with dignity and respect,” said Steve Eller, Board Vice President.

“Our volunteers greet each family as if they were a neighbor and help carry groceries to their cars.”

Clemmons Food Pantry demonstrates the accumulation of the best efforts of a community to pull its resources and gifts together to love and provide for neighbors who need a helping hand.

Lobster Forks

By Tami Rumfelt hile sorting through years of accumulated stuff in my kitchen, I came across something that made me laugh…lobster forks. A set of 10 lobster forks, to be exact. What made me laugh is that, at one point in my pre-married life, I actually believed that my husband and I would spend evenings dining on lobster with 8 of our closest friends.

The reality is that within the first 5 years of our marriage, my husband and I had 3 children and had already accumulated a mass of debt. The only time those forks have been used is when I needed something small and pointy to poke a hole with. If I knew then what I know now, I’d have registered for a set of indestructible plastic dishware and a lifetime supply of carpet cleaner when I got married.

Even though our life together didn’t turn out quite like I had planned or imagined, my love for my husband and my commitment to our marriage has never wavered.

Would I enjoy having more money, a bigger house and a nicer car? Probably. But, I treasure my husband and the life we do have together far more than anything money could buy.

I sometime wonder if my love for Jesus runs that deep.

Sure, I’m all about praising and thanking Him when life is going well. But, when the going gets tough, I’m way too quick to start griping. After all, why should someone who has a relationship with the King of the universe ever have to suffer?

But, the truth is that becoming a Christian does not give us a “Get out of problems free” pass. In fact, many people face daily persecution and suffering because they are Christians. Jesus even said in the Book of John that “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This is how we can praise him in both good and bad times, by remembering that He is still in control and working for our ultimate good, even on days when life doesn’t meet our expectations.

An Active Imagination

ew people would deny that creativity is a good thing. This ability of transcendence has allowed us to travel to every known corner of our planet and to the far reaches of the universe through stories and visual arts. It has afforded us the opportunity to connect with our ancestors through poetry, plays, sculptures and paintings of the countless poets, playwright and artisans. It constantly stretches our yearning for knowledge and exploration of worlds and ideas yet unknown, but ever beckons for our discovery of them. Yes, it is without a doubt that creativity is a good thing...most of the time.

F

As one who considers himself to be naturally creative, I can attest that creativity has been a valuable asset in my profession. But for a child, well, let’s just say that a creative mind can also be a dangerous thing.

My father was also a pastor, so one would think that I knew how to behave in church. It would seem logical to think that, but to be honest, that was rarely the case. For me as a child, I found church to be about as exciting as learning long division. My dad was normally a great storyteller, but for some reason, it seemed as soon as he stepped behind a pulpit, all he could say was “Blah, blah, blah God, blah, blah, blah.” Yep, real exciting stuff. I could not take the boredom, so I would secretly begin to play, acting if I was one of my favorite television characters. It was one Sunday morning, when I was about five or so, my dad was preaching and I slipped into being the character Matt Dillon, from Gunsmoke. Yes, in my mind, I was Marshall Dillon, sitting in Miss Kitty’s saloon watching this ornery character, who was causing

a bit of a ruckus. To me, it became all too real. This stranger in town began to stare me down and finally started pointing at me as if to call me out into the street. Squinting my steely eyes, I slowly nodded as I imagined walking out into the dusty street, hand readied at my right hip, ready for a showdown. Still keeping my eyes on this desperado, he spoke to me in a quite familiar voice; it was the voice of my father, who, noticing I was up to no good, had interrupted his sermon to issue his fatherly warning, “Tim, you better behave yourself!” That may have been what he said to me, but what Matt Dillon heard was, “Draw!” With that, I quickly drew my hand up in the form of an imaginary gun and yelled, “POW!” as I fired one shot from my six-shooter.

Much to my chagrin, the outlaw staggered a bit, but did not drop facedown into the street. No, instead, he came down and grabbed my arm, abruptly arousing me from my fantasy world into the harsh reality that I was being taken out of church for a different type of smack-down.

It’s scary when you realize that you have messed up and you are about to face the undesired results. A writer of a letter to the Hebrews expressed this same sentiment as he wrote, “It’s scary to fall into the hands of the living God!” (Hebrews 10.31 CEB).

The day I “fell into my dad’s hands” was scary. I got what I deserved.

But immediately afterward, I fell into his arms and he hugged me as he said over and over how much he loved me...and I knew he meant it.

Churches Reach Out to Help Others with Concert

ver the years, Shallowford Square in Lewisville, NC has become a gathering place for family, friends and neighbors to enjoy plays, picnics and concerts. On September 27, 2014 at 6 pm, nationally-known Christian recording artist, Jim Cole will be in concert to benefit the Lewisville Community Assistance Program. “We at 89.3 WBFJ-FM are very excited to host this concert and welcome Jim Cole back to the area. Jim Cole sounds remarkably like James Taylor, so if you like JT, you'll love Jim Cole. The concert is free, however, we encourage everyone to bring a non-perishable food item, plus a love offering will be received for the Lewisville Community Assistance Program,” said Kurt Myers, WBFJ-FM. The Lewisville Community Assistance Program provides food and financial aid to families in need in the Lewisville area and is supported by twelve churches from different denominations. Two local businesses and several churches are sponsoring the event: Hayworth-Miller Funeral Homes, Lewisville Drug Company, Lewisville UMC, Lewisville Baptist, Sunrise UMC, Generations Church, Westside Christian Church and Robinhood Road Baptist Church.

“I'm very grateful for the financial and prayer support from the community. This is going to be a great time for friends to gather and to help others in times of need. So it's a win-win for everyone.

Opening act will be Westside Worship from Westside Christian Church followed by Jim Cole. We will have food vendors offering hot dogs, popcorn, cotton candy, slushies, snow cones and more. We truly hope that this concert will build a sense of faith and encouragement to the community through the hope, love and saving grace of Jesus Christ," commented Kurt.

t’s hard to believe that Pro Dance Academy is entering its third season. We sat down with owner, Miranda Lobs, to recap this past year. “It’s still hard to take in how blessed Pro Dance has been in just a short amount of time. We had 130% growth in our enrollment this year.

Our baby classes are busting at the seams, our teen classes are growing, our all-boys hip-hop is strong. But, I truly can’t take the credit for it. God has blessed our studio with an amazing staff that invests wholeheartedly in our students, and awesome families that have been loyal to us and who, through word of mouth, have been paramount in our growth,” says Miranda. She admits that there are other factors that have helped in their growth, as well, such as their state-of-the-art dance facility and dance retail shop, their unique approach to their recital, and their business model that Miranda says she runs through the lens of being a mom of three and always asking herself what she would be willing to do if it were her child.

The biggest change for the studio this past year was the formation of their competition team, the Academy. Miranda had hopeful, yet very realistic, expectations for the new “Academy.” “I wanted the girls to be able to ease into the competition world while deepening their passion for dance. It was important for us to convey to them that competition is less about winning and more about expressing your 96 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

love of dance through your performance. It’s about feeling a sense of accomplishment in all your hard work and dedication. It’s about working together with your teammates to tell a story,” according to Miranda. She adds, “We told our girls as long as they did their best, their best would always be good enough for us!” Well, indeed it was. In their first year competing, the “Academy” managed to take in numerous 1st place and platinum awards. In addition, they scored in many 1st and 2nd place overall categories, as well as receiving an Overall High Score of the Day. “To tell you we are anything less than proud of these girls would be an understatement of how we truly feel. Our Academy has worked very hard this year and they exceeded everyone’s expectations!” beams Miranda.

So then, what’s in store next year for Pro Dance Academy?

According to Miranda, one of the values of Pro Dance is to “keep it in the family.” They like to utilize the businesses of families who take classes at the studio. “Clemmons is a small community,” acknowledges Miranda, “It’s important to support each other where we can. If I can help promote or use a business of a family that takes at the studio, I’m going to do so.” With that mindset, she also feels it’s important for fellow Clemmons organizations to connect with each other. So, Pro Dance Academy is excited to announce they will be the official home of the Forsyth County Broncos Cheerleaders this year. Pro Dance will host Broncos Cheer practices during their football season and will team up with the Broncos Cheerleaders’ Coaches to offer post-season clinics for the girls who aspire to learn how to cheer. “This is an exciting partnership for us,” Miranda exclaims. “In the past, you were either a cheerleader or a dancer. It doesn’t have to be this way. I am both, and I believe that being skilled as a cheerleader and a dancer can open up so many more opportunities in these girls’ dance/cheer futures.” And what better organization to team up with than the Broncos? “My sons have played Broncos Football for 4 years. Broncos is a huge staple in our community, and Pro Dance is excited to add them to our family!” says Miranda.

wenty-one years ago, Kathy Miller launched One Shot Photography.

More than two decades later, she has worked with countless people to catch the perfect moment and create lasting memories on film and now, digital pictures. Those who have worked with Kathy know the personal attention and fantastic energy she puts into every shoot. Her strong vision for photography is evident in her work, and the expertise she brings is unmatched.

One Shot Photography was born from Kathy’s interest in working with people and photography. From the beginning, she has known the importance of being ready to capture the important moments in life.

“I had a clothing store in the 90s, and one day a friend of the family stopped by after one of my stints in Nashville and asked, ‘How is Ms. One Shot doing today?’—the sound of that just worked,” said Kathy. “In 1993, while attending an Alan Jackson concert in Charlotte and, of course, I had somehow smuggled my camera in, I got this incredible shot of Alan leaning over to communicate with his fans— his fingers and the fans’ fingers meeting, and from that picture our slogan became ‘photos that tell a story.’ In my business, sometimes you only get one shot to get the photo that tells the story. I worked with Alan Jackson’s Fan Club, and was published in his world-tour magazine, Neon Rainbow Magazine, and his monthly publications. I also photographed for Today’s Country and had various photos published in Country Weekly Magazine for the next 12 years. In 1999, a friend asked me if I could photograph her wedding—now, hundreds of weddings later, we are still

A great deal of Kathy’s success comes from her dedication to her work. “I am not a stay-at-home mom,” said Kathy. “I work professionally about 16 hours a day six days a week and sometimes even seven! We have a full service studio as well as a separate environmental studio along with a frame shop for all her customers’ needs. We try to offer input, as well as 90% of the props and clothing for each photo session, so that our customers walk away feeling like they got exactly what they wanted and more. We love it when they tell us they are mad at us because we gave them too many choices, and they can’t make a decision!”

As a professional photographer, Kathy understands the importance of creating lasting memories. “I want the new generation to not have all their memories on cell phones and Facebook, as that may go away someday and all they would have left would be the memory of that photo,” said Kathy. “I want people to know that the photos they take are not for them, but for generations to come, to see how they lived, worked and played. I wish every family could have a large portrait of their family displayed in their home to look at every day and say, “Remember when!” As we all know, families are what holds the world together in these times. As I tell my kids all the time, when you have nothing else in life, you will have family, so why not put that photo on the wall to remind yourself of that every day?

Though Kathy is extremely talented and

experienced in photography, she understands the importance of refreshing her techniques and adapting to new technologies. “I attend workshops and classes to stay up-to-date with the latest technology and techniques,” said Kathy. “When I started my business, computers, cell phones and digital cameras had not even been made available yet. My photography started in the film world, where you had to wait 2–10 days to see if what you shot worked! I now teach a photography workshop and share the things not to do.”

One Shot Photography offers photography services for businesses, including commercial, special events, product shots, as well as weddings, families, children and senior portraits. While Kathy Miller does book up quickly, she is always willing to help even on short notice. “If I am available, I will do it immediately,” said Kathy. “I believe in photography that is fun, exciting and modern with a twist of tradition; you never know what kind of pose or prop I might come out with! The key to winning in this environment is offering products and services that are unique and meaningful to your clients. I just love when customers say, ‘Just tell me you are not going to just give me a CD; I want finished products.’”

Have you ever shared pancakes with a pirate?

What about bacon with a ballerina? If the answer is no, then you’re in luck. You’ll be able to do just that on October 4th at the Ronald McDonald House Character Breakfast!

Celebrating its 5th year, the Character Breakfast is a morning full of fun with some of your child’s favorite characters, from local favorites like the Demon Deacon and Bolt from the Winston-Salem Dash to classics like Elmo and Cinderella. And, of course, Ronald McDonald himself will be there! He wouldn’t dare be anywhere else.

This year’s event, which will be held for the first time at Bridger Field House at BB&T Field, promises to be another exciting time, filled with a great breakfast buffet, an impressive raffle, hugs and autographs from a wide variety of popular characters and an endless supply of fabulous photo opportunities. The best part of all, though, is that the event supports the work being done at the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem on Hawthorne Road.

“The Friends of the Ronald McDonald House are so excited about the 5th annual Character Breakfast,” said Stacy Petronzio, President of the Friends of

Ronald McDonald House, the volunteer group who puts on the event. “It’s been such a huge hit that we have to keep moving to a bigger venue. I look forward to the event all year, seeing the smiles on the faces of the young children at the event, and knowing that through the work we do, we are bringing smiles to the faces of the families staying at the house as well.”

The Ronald McDonald House is a “home away from home” for families of children who are receiving medical care in our community’s hospitals. There are currently over 300 Ronald McDonald Houses worldwide in over 30 countries. Winston-Salem’s house—one of six houses in North Carolina—turns 30 years old this September 14th!

“It is fantastic that the fun the children and their families have at our Character Breakfast translates into helping the children and families that stay at the Ronald McDonald House,” said Chuck Kraft, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem. “The generosity of the community makes this all possible. The Character Breakfast can’t help but bring a smile to your face, regardless of your age!”

t’s that time of year again when families across the country perfect their tailgating recipes, prep the picnic basket, pack up the car or truck and hit the asphalt for some football fan fever. Tailgating is almost a sport unto itself, and kids don’t have to be left out of the mix. In fact, as football tailgating is a family favorite, why not let the kids join in by helping to prepare some yummy tailgate dishes the whole family will enjoy?

TAILGATE PRETZELS Kids enjoy getting their hands in the dough and twisting it into different shapes.

Consider having the kids form the shape of footballs, letters of your team name or the numbers on their favorite players’ jerseys.

Ingredients: 1 package yeast 1 ½ cup warm water 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon table salt 4 cups flour 1 egg, beaten Kosher salt to sprinkle Directions: 1. Pour the warm water into a large bowl.

Sprinkle on the yeast and stir.

2. Add sugar, table salt and flour.

3. Mix and knead the dough.

4. Give the child a small ball of dough to roll and then twist into letters, numbers and shapes.

5. Place pretzel dough on a greased cookie sheet.

6. Stir a little water into the beaten egg and let the kids brush the beaten egg onto the pretzels.

7. Sprinkle with Kosher salt.

8. Bake at 425 degrees for 12-15 minutes, then let cool.

9. Serve with your favorite mustards and ketchup for dipping.

EASY CHILI-CHEESE DIP

PIGS IN A BLANKET WITH CHEESE

Ingredients: 1 (8 oz.) package of cream cheese 1 (15 oz.) can of chili (with or without beans) 1 (8 oz.) package Mexican or taco cheese blend

Ingredients: 8 hot dogs 4 slices American cheese, each cut into 6 strips 1 (8 oz.) can crescent dinner rolls

Nachos for dipping Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Spray the bottom of a small casserole dish with cooking spray and let kids help spread cream cheese over the bottom with a flat spoon or spatula.

3. Pour the can of chili over top and let kids help again to spread the chili.

4. Kids can sprinkle to coat top with as much cheese as they want -- ½ or all of the bag.

5. Bake for 15-20 minutes, cool and serve with favorite nachos.

Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

2. Have an adult make a slice in the middle of each hotdog, stopping an inch before each end.

3. Kids can help insert 2 strips of cheese into each slit.

4. Separate crescent roll dough into individual triangles.

5. Kids roll up each cheese hotdog in the triangle of dough, then place on an ungreased baking sheet, cheese-side up.

6. Bake for 12-15 minutes until rolls are golden brown.

7. Pack and serve at your tailgate with your favorite condiments.

hen it’s time for a high school student to choose a college, no amount of information packets, e-mails, or photos can really capture the essence of a school like an on-campus tour. The summer before your junior year would be a great time to start preparing for your college tours. You need plenty of time to visit in-state schools and to allow for travel time for out-of-state schools. Summer isn’t always the best time to get a good feel for the campus, because there are not many students attending classes then.

To get a realistic idea of the atmosphere on a campus, it would be good to go during the fall or spring semesters and to try to catch a sporting event that interests you.

To prepare for these crucial tours, it’s a good idea to go online and find out what last years’ freshman class looked like in regards to admission standards, to determine your chances are for admission. It’s a good idea to always have a few “reach,” “match” and “safety” schools on your list to figure out where you stand, based on average SAT and ACT scores. A “reach” school is one whose average admission standards are well above your scores; a “match” school is one where your admission GPA and SAT fall within the average of their admission standards; lastly, a “safety” school is one to which you would easily be admitted based on your scores. You also want to note the percentage of student acceptance based on total number of applicants. In general, parents add a unique perspective to college tours. They are more likely to ask about cost, student services and graduation rates, so make sure your parents provide input on your list of college tours. They also have the most say in your ability to travel to all of the schools on your list.

During your scheduled college tours, you want to listen closely during information sessions and come prepared to ask a lot of questions.

Depending on the size of the high school you are attending, you may want to ask about the student to teacher ratio. If you attend a large high school, it may not matter to you that freshman biology has 500 people, but it might really matter to someone at a small school who is used to having access to teachers and small classroom sizes. You might also want to know if basic-level classes are taught by the professors versus their graduate assistants, who may or may not be teaching for the first time.

You gain much more information if you schedule an official tour through the office of admissions at each school. Most official campus tours are led by current students who can give you better insight into questions you might have regarding student life. Most tours can be scheduled online and typically consist in visiting the library, a dorm, a particular building your major might be housed in, and campus attractions.

Small-campus tours might only take an hour, while campuses that have 30,000+ students might take well over two hours to tour.

As you become more savvy in regards to questions you should ask and places you should visit on your tours, you may find that return visits to those earlier colleges might help you make a more informed final decision, so give yourself enough time to make second visits to those schools that make your final cut.

It’s not absolutely necessary to have an official tour of every college you are interested in attending. If you have friends at colleges that can let you spend the night in a dorm, then an unofficial tour may be the way to go. Whether it’s an official tour or an unofficial visit with a friend, make sure you set foot on all the campuses that will be receiving your application.

The Ruins of Gorlan: The Ranger's Apprentice: Book One

By John A. Flanagan Genre: Fantasy Age Range: 9-12 Reviewed by Lisa S.T. Doss Adventure, mystery, danger, learning about tracking, and the art of archery, this book had all the elements that would captivate a reader.

While the first chapter may be slow to move the story forward, readers only have to wait until the next chapter. Will is a boy who has his dreams set on battle school to become a knight; instead, his talents of stealth and courage place him with the Rangers. The author does a fantastic job of taking the reader slowly through the scenes, thoroughly explaining various concepts, while building the excitement. This is a story of friendship; the rewards of honestly and talent; and the quest of time and maturity. As a reader, I was drawn to the chivalrous nature of the adults in the story. Fairness, justice, compassion, and discussions of frankness and agreement were appealing traits. And when the first book is over, there's book two, and...finally, book twelve.

By Veronica Roth Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction Age Range: 14+ Book Reviewed by Rebecca Olsen With the movie debuting in March, this author has been getting a lot of well-deserved attention. If you enjoyed The Hunger Games, then you’ll likely be drawn in to this trilogy set in futuristic Chicago, which has similar social themes. Forced to choose a faction where only one trait is valued, Beatrice Prior can’t be categorized as honest, brave, intelligent, self-less, or peaceful. In a strictly controlled society where factions are thicker than blood, she has to hide her “divergence” at the risk becoming an outcast or worse. Beatrice chooses the Dauntless faction to hide, where she is able to take risks and find adventure, but is also forced to fight other initiates to survive and face her biggest fears in drug induced hallucinations. When another faction attempts overpower the city’s leaders and take control, Beatrice is left with a choice to make. Will she fight to protect her family and the faction system that controls her future? Or will she fight for the freedom to choose another way of life?

By Anne Lamott Genre: Memoir Age Range: 15+ Book Reviewed by Emily Eileen Carter I love author Anne Lamott. Her books Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith and Grace (Eventually): Thoughts on Faith have greatly impacted my life. She is one of the most raw and honest spiritual writers I know. So, when I had my son, I knew that Operating Instructions, A Journal of My Son’s First Year was a must read.

This vivid, frank, and humorous account of Anne’s first year raising her infant son has been such a great support to me as a new mom. Not only do I feel a bit less crazy as she describes how wrecked she is without sleep and the constant care required for a newborn, but I really connected to the tiny details, nuances, and joys she experiences that make parenting such a delight. In addition to addressing her faith and fear raising of an infant son as a single mother, Anne delves into the dark, lonely parts of the soul that every human confronts at some point. However, she never fails to offer hope and love through sharing her faith and wonder in the miracle of her son.

We often read and hear about some great place someone went for a date night, or that new place around the corner with fantastic drink specials during happy hour, but we rarely get the same information about breakfast and lunch destinations.
