Welcomes you!!

We hope you enjoy your stay in Forsyth – for a day, for a week, or maybe for the rest of your life!

We hope that you will enjoy the variety of eating establishments, places to shop, recreation and events; those you remember from your last visit, and those that are new. Not here long enough to see it all this trip? We invite you to plan your stop with your next trip and see more of the greatness that is Forsyth, Montana. Play. Eat. Drink. Shop. Explore.

Enjoy!

We are glad you found us and look forward to seeing you again!

Forsyth, the City of Trees, is located in a valley along the banks of the Yellowstone River. Economic benefits come from tourism, agriculture, railroad, coal mining, and various small businesses Forsyth has great schools, a library, hospital and nursing home, social and medical services, assisted living, retirement living community, parks, and all essential services to complement our great location along I-94 and the Yellowstone River! Forsyth’s vision is to be a vibrant, well-kept community that supports family values, fulfills economic, educational, and social needs, and provides a “hometown” quality of life.

Forsyth was named for General James W. Forsyth, who landed here from a river steamer before there was a town. With the abundant growth of cottonwood in the area, steamers often stopped to refuel their engines. The town was established in 1880 and earned its post office in 1882 when the Northern Pacific arrived. The opulent buildings located along Main Street reflect the wealth of Forsyth's early years. In 1910 the Milwaukee Railroad extended north into the Judith Basin opening a new territory for settlement and establishing Forsyth as a trading hub. The economy today is stilled fueled by the railroad.

The town is located along the Lewis and Clark Trail. In the exploration of the great Northwest Territory, Captain William Clark passed through what would become Rosebud County on July 28, 1806, en route down the Yellowstone River to meet Meriwether Lewis, who was traveling down the Missouri River.

Forsyth eventually became the county seat for Rosebud County, the fourth largest county in the state. The County and Forsyth boast hunting and fishing – antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, ducks, geese, pheasants, grouse, partridges, and wild turkeys! And don’t forget the agates!

Forsyth really does have it all – Yellowstone River access, golf, movie theatre, bowling alley, museum, library, shopping, eating establishments, parks and playgrounds, county fairground, camping, lodging, hospital, pharmacy, and more!

If you are here over the weekend and would like to attend religious services, we have a variety of denominations and non-denominational churches for you to choose from.

Forsyth is a wonderful place to live … or just stop by for a visit.

Forsyth became a Montana Main Street Program community in 2023.

Rosebud County was established on February 1, 1901 and is located in Southeastern Montana covering approximately 5,027 square miles (5,010 square miles is land and 17 square miles is water). The County Courthouse began construction in 1912. (To learn more about the history of the Rosebud County Courthouse, go to www.rosebudcountymt.gov/resources/ and/or visit the Rosebud County Museum located in Forsyth.) Rosebud County estimated population is 8,329 as of the latest census in 2020.

Rosebud County is mostly rolling, small hills. Elevations range from 2,441’ to 4,807’ above sea level.
