Recipes Under $10 Ham and Pineapple Pizza Subs

Ingredients:

Directions:

1 (13.2-ounce) package refrigerated crusty French bread dough 1/2 cup lower-sodium marinara sauce 2 ounces Canadian bacon, sliced and coarsely chopped 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 1 cup peeled cubed fresh pineapple 1/4 cup sliced green onions (optional)

Preheat oven to 350°. Roll dough out to a 24-inch rope; cut dough into 2 (12-inch) ropes. Place dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until golden; cool completely on a wire rack. Cut bread into 4 (6-inch-long) pieces; split each piece crosswise.

Preheat broiler to high. Open each bread portion flat. Spread 2 tablespoons sauce over each bread portion; divide Canadian bacon evenly among servings. Sprinkle bacon with cheese; top with pineapple.

Broil 3 minutes or until golden. Garnish with green onions, if desired. Fold top half of bread over cheese mixture

12 eggs 4 slices bacon 3 jalapeno peppers 1 cup finely shredded sharp Cheddar cheese 1/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 red onion, minced 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard 1 pinch paprika, or as desired

1. Place eggs in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil, remove from heat, and let eggs stand in hot water for 15 minutes. Remove eggs from hot water, cool under cold running water, and peel. 2. Place bacon in a large skillet; cook over mediumhigh heat, turning occasionally, until evenly browned, about 10 minutes.

Drain bacon on paper towels; crumble when cool enough to handle.

3. Remove seeds and stems from jalapenos; mince 1 pepper and slice remaining peppers into very thin strips; set aside. 4. Cut eggs in half lengthwise; place yolks in a bowl.

Mash egg yolks with a fork; stir in minced jalapeno, Cheddar cheese, mayonnaise, red onion, and mustard. 5. Place egg whites cut-side up on a serving platter. Spoon yolk mixture into egg white halves; sprinkle with crumbled bacon and paprika.

I’ve decided to use the inperson experience that customers get when they come into my shop as an opportunity to show them how much we have to offer, an experience that they could never get online or in a catalog.” In addition to owning Orland Park Cyclery, he’s been an avid cyclist for 30 years, racing in all sorts of types of races across the US. For many years he rode his bike 10,000+ miles.

Community Involvement Orland Park Cyclery has provided seminars to Cub Scouts, teaching them about bike safety and repair. He plans to talk to the mayor, community groups and chamber of commerce to discover more ways to become involved in the community because he feels that “helping the community not only helps the business, it also builds better and stronger relationships which pays everyone back in the end.”

The future of the Orland Park Cyclery They are making changes and trying to move ahead, remerchandising the shop.

Saplis says, “I see the business growing even further, which will cause us to expand the building and open other locations. It’s hard to say time frame. There are a lot of factors & things have to be right to move forward on plans. Expansion plans will be implemented once I own the building, but expansion will probably start to happen over the next few years.”

Now that things are up and running quite well he hopes to be able to delegate more, while still being involved, just doing things that are more fun like bike fittings, group rides & such.

Growing some or all of your vegetables, herbs and fruit can save you time, the hassle of going to the store, and money. It’s relatively simple, doesn’t take much time or money to start, and provides you with the freshest, most nutritious produce.

When you go to the supermarket, you don’t know how long that they’ve been sitting on the shelf, how far they’ve traveled, or what they’ve been treated with. By growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs at home, you are able to eliminate all the guesswork.

Gardening Basics Part 1

But just because it’s relatively simple, doesn’t mean that growing your own garden is error-proof. You still have to know what you’re doing so that you don’t end up wasting your time and money. This series will cover some of the basics when it comes to gardening and what you can do to avoid the most common pitfalls.

Soil Type

Sandy Soil has the largest particles and feels dry

Determine What to Grow Where: Make a plan of

your garden, keeping in mind that the garden’s tallest plants in should be at the north end of the garden and permanent vegetables should be at garden’s south side.

When planning the garden, figure out what your family likes to eat. There’s no sense in growing food that you don’t want, as you’ll end up giving or throwing it away, unless you plan on growing it to sell at a farmer’s market.

How To Start

A rototiller will help with this process.

A good vegetable garden fertilizer should be rated in terms of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

By learning about things like soil and its preparation, sun and shade and garden journaling, locations and plans, you can ensure that when you start your garden it will be more successful than if you did not have this information to review. More on gardening next time. n

The owner of the previous shop where he was working found out about his inquiries and fired him, claiming a conflict of interest due to his interest in the other shop.

Seeing the bike shop offer as one too good to miss, he forged ahead, hiring a mediator, and putting together business plan and 3-year prospectus numbers. Soon thereafter, he sat down with the chairman Governor’s State Small business Association who sifted through everything and after lots of questions, gave him the green light. Meeting with the mediator, he explained his analysis, his background in cycling shops, the timing, who he had talked to, and his lifelong dream.

Karyn, his then fiancé wasn’t sold on the idea, felt that he should choose between her and the business as doing both was too much. Karyn explained to the mediator her concerns. The mediator told Karyn that while she wasn’t taking sides, she felt that Jim had to do this now. She said that if he didn’t get a chance to do this their marriage would most likely fail and asked how they could bring her on board with this, allowing the wedding as planned.

He knew once he took over, some changes would need to be made, even though most of the services, products, brands they sell were in place, but is careful in what he does so as not to “upset the apple cart” all at once. He made a priority list, tackling the most important items first.

Saplis really loves helping people and being able to pass on his knowledge, and feels that helping people in this way is extremely rewarding. But owning a cycling shop isn’t free of challenges. He typically puts in 65+ hours weekly.

Despite her initial reservations, his wife Karyn is “super thrilled” at how well their business is going.

Advice

Saplis has the following advice to would-be entrepreneurs: Learn all you can about the business you’re looking to get into.

Make yourself as close to an expert as you can and that will still not be enough when you own your own. Prepare as much as you possibly can. Be ready for anything so that when something that you didn’t expect pops up you’re better prepared to handle them because everything else was planned for and taken care of.

He has the following advice to the community: He thinks that adults need to see bikes like they did when they were kids as fun form of freedom that is exercise. Anyone who can step through a bike frame can ride one. If everyone had this childlike mindset when it came to biking, people would be happier and healthier, with the added benefit that motorist would pay more attention to cyclists. He says “Everyone needs to rediscover their inner child and ride a bike again. Remember how that felt? Who doesn’t want to feel that way again?!”

After hearing this, Jim was told by someone to go talk to Al, the owner, of Orland Park Cyclery. He was told the owner was getting up in age and his lease would soon expire, and because the shop’s sales had declined over the past few years, he was practically giving the shop away. Saplis spoke to the owner who gave him an all-inclusive figure.

After he married and returned home from the honeymoon, he happily took possession of the business. From start to finish, he put in 100+ hours to purchase the business.

Jim worked at several other types of jobs, but his heart was never into these other ventures. But when it came to the cycling businesses, he found his true passion. On three separate occasions, he was hired at a failing bike shop, starting as a mechanic, he worked his way up to running everything.

Within a very short time, he turned the business around, made them profitable, and increased sales. During this time he considered buying and/or opening his own bike shop in the Chicagoland area.

The owner of the last shop, he was managing, had constantly been dropping comments that she would sell him the shop. One day he wanted to close the deal, but was turned down, saying that now wasn’t the right time.

After Karyn gave the nod, Saplis moved onto the negotiations. At first they were far apart, but after checking out his references, Al said “Don’t worry Jim, whatever it takes let’s make this happen.” His references felt that if anyone could turn around the business, he could.

Easter is a time for eating eggs, ham, lamb, and hot cross buns, all of which can be good for your health, if eaten in moderation. With each food presented, a brief history as to why it’s appropriate for Easter will be presented. Read on: Eggs

According to the Huffington Post, “Eggs have an important place in the ritual of the Passover Seder. They are a central part of Easter celebrations. And while the humble egg's status as a healthy food has had its ups and downs in the arena of public opinion, recent research has suggested that eggs, when eaten in moderation, do a body good.”

Eggs are a great source of protein, containing vitamin A, potassium and various B vitamins including folic acid, biotin and choline. Choline is a vital component in fetal brain development, helps to reduce inflammation as well as improve neurological function and brain health including the ‘happiness’ hormones such as serotonin, dopamine, norephinephrine. Not many foods are as nutrient dense as an egg is. Eggs contain many nutrients needed specifically brain and nerve health.

Despite getting a bad rap for containing fat and cholesterol, egg yolks are where many of the vitamins and nutrients are found, including lutein and zeaxanthin, which helps protect against vision loss. The Huffington Post continues “Eggs are also high in sulfur, an essential nutrient that helps with everything from vitamin B absorption to liver function. But sulfur is also necessary for the production of collagen and keratin, which help create and maintain shiny hair, strong nails and glowing skin.” Many of egg’s nutrients are more readily absorbed with the presence of fat, so the fat in the eggs, in this case is actually beneficial, provided that one eats a wellbalanced diet besides.

The yolk's health benefits should not overshadow egg whites, however, which are a low-calorie, low-fat source of perfect protein. In fact, eggs are considered the "gold standard" for protein quality because their amino acids are the most digestible to humans.

But all eggs aren’t created equal; it’s best to buy “cage-free” or “free-range” eggs from chickens that are allowed to roam, picking what it wanted to eat. Such eggs are higher in various vitamins due to its (relatively) stress free lifestyle. Better yet, purchase eggs directly from a local farmer at a farmer’s market who focuses on growing eggs in a healthy environment.

These fats can be reduced if it is 100% grass fed. It is also an excellent source of iron, providing 20% of men’s and 12% of women’s recommended daily intake, in addition to providing 30 grams per serving. It also contains vitamin A, Vitamins B1, B3, B6 and more than 100% of B12, which are essential for metabolic reactions in the body, in addition to 30% 45% of the daily requirement of Zinc (depending on the serving size), which is essential for growth, healing and a healthy immune system.

Earth Day is an annual worldwide event held to increase awareness and appreciation of the Earth's natural environment and examine our lifestyle and see what we could do better. According to earthday.org, “The fight for a clean environment continues in a climate of increasing urgency, as the ravages of climate change become more manifest every day.” In honor of Earth Day, let’s look at how your daily choices affect the environment.

What is an Ecological Footprint?

According to ecologicalfootprint.org, an Ecological Footprint is a tool that scientists use in order to calculate the strain humans demand of nature. It measures how quickly people develop waste and take in natural resources like: oil, timber, paper, metals, and fish. The Ecological Footprint is a useful idea because most people don’t realize the environmental impact of their decisions.

Your Home/ Belongings How large is your home?

The larger that your home is, the larger its Ecological Footprint is, because of the building materials, and energy usage.

Where is your home?

Do you live in the inner city, an older suburb, newer suburb or a rural area? According to myfootprint.org, in new suburbs carbon emissions are generally higher than elsewhere because far more energy is required to develop public infrastructure, housing, and both personal and commercial transportation.

Compact urban living is less energy intensive because infrastructure is in place already, and, in many places, there is public transportation available. “In rural areas, greater self reliance on local food, energy, and water resources and fewer short trips on congested roadways lead to lower energy requirements relative to sprawling suburbs.”

What type of a climate is your home located?

According to myfootprint.org, “Colder climates require more energy for heat and somewhat more for lighting and cooking. Hot and humid climates, on the other hand, require more energy for cooling and refrigeration.” Colder areas seem to require the most energy.

Was your home or any portion of it built with recycled materials, wood certified as sustainably harvested, or any other green design features? According to myfootprint.org, “Green buildings significantly reduce demands for energy, water, and materials through ecologically… [sound] design, construction, operation, maintenance, and

removal practices… Passive solar heating, water efficient fixtures, recycled materials and other green design features can generate up to 30% in energy savings, reduce carbon emissions by 35%, reduce water use by 30 to 50% and save 50 to 90% in waste disposal costs.”

Approximately what share of your home furnishings are second hand or made of either recycled or sustainably produced materials? The less new furniture you have, the smaller your ecological footprint will be. Buying secondhand furniture also costs less than buying new and it’s usually sturdier to boot. In lieu of buying older furniture, you can also consider buying those made from sustainably produced methods.

How often do you buy new things to replace old ones?

According to small-farm-permaculture-and-sustainable-living.com, “Changing fashions, constantly updating technology trends [“planned obsolescence”], and the thrill and perceived status of having ‘new stuff’ compels people to throw away perfectly serviceable goods and replace them with new items. All of this adds to the volume of resources taken from Earth and the volume of waste that must be disposed of each year.”

It’s best to use things until they genuinely need to be replaced. When you replace things that are worn out, consider buying secondhand, or those made from sustainably produced methods. Instead of buying something, you can also consider renting or borrowing it from someone who has what you need.

When you buy clothing or paper products, how often do you select items labeled as recycled, natural, organic, or made of alternative fibers such as hemp? The more of these types of materials you buy, the better for the environment it is.

Garbage & Recycling How much garbage does your household produce?

The more you throw out, the greater your ecological footprint will be. The more you can conserve, recycle, the smaller your ecological footprint will be. The true goal is to have zero waste.

According to myfootprint.org “Recycling our wastes has enormous environmental and economic benefits in the form of reduced landfill space, fewer demands for raw materials, less energy consumption, less air and water pollution, lower waste-disposal bills, and cheaper goods. Recycling one metric ton of paper saves 17 trees. It takes 40 - 95% less energy to produce goods with recycled aluminum, glass, plastic, or paper than it does to manufacture them with raw materials… Zero waste does not aim to simply manage waste, but eliminate its creation in the first place.”

School

If your school recycles already, but doesn’t do so optimally or completely, consider starting an education campaign to ask why people don’t recycle and showcase the benefits of doing so. Another way to bring your school’s ecological footprint down is to suggest a greywater system that takes the water from the showers and uses it to water the stadium’s fields. If your school leaves its lights on when students leave the classroom, try to be the last one out and turn the lights off behind you. Every little bit helps!

1.Alternative fuels generally produce fewer emissions that contribute to smog, air pollution and global warming; 2.Most alternative fuels are not derived from finite fossilfuel resources 3.Alternative fuels can help any nation become more energy independent.

Electricity: If you can afford it, try getting electricity that is at least partially from natural resources such as hydroelectric, solar, and wind. Better yet, if you have room, and can afford it get solar panels, and/ or a wind generator for your house.

Hydrogen is another fuel that can be used to heat. Some models use ordinary tap water as its fuel source. While it might not be the cheapest system to setup in the US, there is technology combining solar power to convert water into hydrogen for cooking.

However it should be noted according to hydrogentwo.com “It's conceivable (depending on location) that a single solar panel could produce all the hydrogen needed for household cooking purposes. That's cooking for FREE after the initial investment in the solar panel, electrolyzer, storage and conversion from propane to hydrogen.” Baking, on the other hand, doesn’t work *quite* as well without oven modifications, as baked goods tend to turn out “soggy” Propane is another good fuel for both cooking, home heating. It also is the fuel used in those little campfire stoves and lanterns. According to usepropane.com, it contains “50 percent less carbon than fuel oil, which means it produces far less particulate pollution when burned… Studies by the Environmental Protection Agency show that propane heating systems generate 68 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions than electricity, because most electricity is produced by coal-fired power plants.”

Biodiesel is a biodegradable alternative fuel that can be used for heating based on nontoxic and renewable: vegetable oils or animal fats, even those recycled after restaurants have used them for cooking. According to motherearthnews.com “Made from new and used vegetable oils or animal fats, this fuel also has the advantage of being [able to]…be created in just a few months, and the plants grown to make biodiesel naturally balance the carbon dioxide emissions created when the fuel is combusted. What's more, the resulting fuel is far less polluting than its petroleum-based alternative.”

In order to be able to determine what your Ecological Footprint, you need to find out what types of questions to ask and determine if there’s anything that you can do to make your impact smaller. How much less would our Ecological Footprint be if we looked at each of these questions and seriously asked ourselves “What can I do to leave the world a better place for generations to come?”

Ethanol is an alcohol-based alternative fuel that is made by fermenting and distilling crops such as corn, barley or wheat. There are a few ethanol based fireplaces on the market that throw out decent amount of heat.

Do you ever wonder, why you don’t always get the results you expect? There’s an old saying “Garbage in, garbage out.” When you continue to do the garbage same thing over and over again, you’re always going to get the same garbage back out. Thinking otherwise is the very definition of insanity.

This series of articles will present a different item that is either unnecessary or harmful in our daily lives and why you should think about avoiding it or something we need to add to our routine in order to help improve our lives in some way.

What is meant by sugar?

Sugar is a generic term used to identify simple carbohydrates: fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose, among others. Sugar are what simple carbohydrates break down and are found naturally in foods such a fruits and fruit juices, milk, and milk products, some vegetables, and added to foods such as sodas, white bread, white rice, pasta and pasta sauce, snack foods, sweets, etc. These added sugars are what gives people the most health problems, and are the main of the focus of these articles.

Having said that, processed and refined carbohydrates are also problematic because they break down in the digestive system faster causing blood sugar levels to rise too rapidly. That’s why refined flours, sugars and sugar syrups pose such a problem for our systems.

Still More Nasty Side Effects of Sugar

According to drlwilson.com, “Eliminating refined starches, white sugar and other 'junk' food helps reduce chemicals in the diet and increases nutrient levels.

Sugars and Yeast. Dietary sugars can lead to mostly symptomless, but difficult-to-treat yeast infections.

Sugar & diabetes. In addition to being a major contributor to the development of diabetes, in that it plays a factor in weight gain, sugar also affect various other parts of your body once you become diabetic, including: •Sugar May be a direct cause of diabetes. According to an article entitled “Diabetes Can Be Caused by High Sugar Intake Alone, New Study Finds” on blog.seattlepi.com, scientists have found a correlation between rising sugar intake and diabetes.

“An additional 150 calories from sugar per person per day – the equivalent of just one 12-ounce soda drink – increased the prevalence of [rate of people getting] diabetes by one percent in that population. The longer the exposure to the higher amount of sugar lasted, the more pronounced the diabetes risk became. Conversely, when-

ever sugar consumption was reduced, diabetes rates diminished as well.”

•Your mouth: including your teeth, causing an increase in plaque, a prime contributor to cavities. It may eventually cause loose teeth. You may even develop pain when chewing. If left alone, plaque will build up along your gums, making them more difficult to clean. Your gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily—signs of the first stage of gum disease, called gingivitis.

If the gum disease gets worse, it can eventually lead to periodontal disease. Diabetes can also make you more susceptible to tongue problems, dry mouth, and nonhealing ulcers (mouth sores).

•Kidney Disease (Nephropathy): The digestion process creates waste products from protein, the kidneys filter these out our blood, to become part of the urine.

According to diabetes.org, “High levels of blood sugar make the kidneys filter too much blood. All this extra work is hard on the filters…In time, the stress of overwork causes the kidneys to lose their filtering ability. Waste products then start to build up in the blood. Finally, the kidneys fail.”

•Skin problems: according to diabetes.about.com, ~Dry Skin: is more common among diabetics. Skin becomes flaky, sore and red, cracking easily, and causing infections. High blood sugar levels contribute to dry skin because bodily fluids are removed by urination to help eliminate sugar. ~Bacterial infections which can thrive due to excess glucose. These are capable of producing painful and swollen, inflamed skin, and can be treated with antibiotics and improve with blood sugar control. “Examples of bacterial infections are boils, eyelid styes, carbuncles, nail infections and hair follicle infections.” ~Itchy Skin in moist areas of the body can be caused by fungal infections. Fungal infections thrive in high blood sugar levels. “Examples of fungal infections are: yeast infections, jock itch, ringworm and athlete's foot.”

•Diabetic Nerve Damage (Neuropathy). According to virginiamason.org, “diabetes has such a devastating effect on the nervous system… [because] excess sugar in the bloodstream reacts negatively with an enzyme in the cells surrounding the nerves and damages them ~Distal neuropathy affects both the hands and feet and is the most common form of neuropathy.

~Diabetic amyotrophy affects the nerves in the thighs, and may eventually lead to foot drop, which is an inability to lift the foot if nerve and muscle damage is present.

~Diabetic diarrhea is caused by neuropathy of the small intestine’s nerves; conversely if the large intestine’s nerves have neuropathy, constipation may result. Additionally, the sphincter muscles nerves are damages, stools may be passed without warning. ~Bladder Neuropathy allows the bladder to retain urine, leading to urinary tract infections. ~Postural hypotension (low blood pressure when standing) can occur when nerves are damaged and cannot compensate for the rise in blood pressure. Fainting or dizziness can result.

•Diabetes & Heart Disease. According to wustl.edu, “Normally, when the heart pumps harder, the blood vessels that feed it open wider to bring the heart more fuel. But in people with diabetes this function often is impaired. Poorly controlled blood glucose levels in type I diabetes can have a negative effect on blood flow to the heart.”

Sugar & Peptic Ulcers: According to wikihow.com “Patients with peptic ulcers should avoid diets rich in red meat, fried or fatty foods, and refined foods, such as flour or sugar [which]… can lead to further ulcer irritation and an increase in stomach acid.”

Sugar & osteoporosis According to healthy.net, “our modem diet might not be good for our bones…[because] many of us ingest too much sugar, caffeine, salt, and alcohol. Consumption of each of these substances is report-

Sugar Causes Heart Disease According to sott.net “Without inflammation being present in the body, there is no way that cholesterol would accumulate in the wall of the blood vessel and cause heart disease and strokes. Without inflammation, cholesterol would move freely throughout the body as nature intended. It is inflammation that causes cholesterol to become trapped… the biggest culprits of chronic inflammation…are the overload of simple, highly processed carbohydrates (sugar, flour and all the products made from them) and the excess consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like soybean, corn and sunflower that are found in many processed foods.”

What to do if you’re concerned

There are several things you can do if you’re concerned about consuming sugar in your diet. To start, don’t eat anything processed, or eat as little processed food as you can. One of the best ways to do this is to eat USDA certified organic foods. Complain to companies about the excess sugars that are added to processed foods. Also, encourage everyone you know to do the same. If enough people take action, the companies will have no choice but to take notice and change their tactics accordingly.

Taking these steps may be a bit more expensive, but you’ll be able to take pride in that you did all that you could do to protect yourself and your loved ones. n

The problem is sometimes the symptoms of inflammation don’t recede, causing the immune system to be stuck in the ‘on’ position. “Refined sugar and other foods with high glycemic values jack up insulin levels and put the immune system on high alert.” Eicosanoids are short-lived hormones which can turn on or off inflammation depending on their type, and become pro-inflammatory when insulin levels are high.

Refrigerators & Freezing Chest Empty out the refrigerator’s contents into a chest cooler; similarly empty the freezer’s contents discarding anything that is spoiled, save any plastic or glass containers.

Set aside the contents of both, as well as ice cube trays. Remove refrigerator drawers, and shelves. Place in a sink with soapy water to let soak. Unplug refrigerator, and carefully slide forward, making sure not to tilt the refrigerator.

Vacuum the refrigerator’s coils with a brush attachment.

Wipe down the freezer, making sure to remove any built-up frost. Refill the ice cube trays putting them back in their holder.

Plug the refrigerator again, and return the food to the refrigerator, wiping containers with a damp rag as they are replaced.

As you put foods into the refrigerator, label the container with a permanent marker what’s inside and when it was cooked; you may also wish to put a “use by” date on it as well. Most leftovers can keep for three – five days. Soups typically can last for a week.

Once a week go through the refrigerator and throw out anything that you are not sure of. It’s better to waste potentially good food rather than have to visit a hospital.

Defrosting Upright and Chest Freezers (These instructions are for non- “self-defrosting” freezers.)

As with the refrigerator, unplug and empty the freezer, placing items in a cooler and put aside. You may wish to do this task on a day that is below freezing outside, so that you don’t have to worry about buying ice and /or borrowing your neighbor’s coolers. If it’s above freezing, it is recommended that you pack the cooler with ice to prevent the frozen foods from thawing.

Typically speaking, there will be a layer of frost that has built up on the shelves and walls. Take as many large pots as you can and fill them up with boiling water. While the pots are coming to a boil, gather as many rags as you can to sop up the water.

If you have an upright freezer, place several pots on the top shelf. As the frost comes off, it will fall onto the shelves below.

Clean off these chunks of ice as they fall. As the water gets cold, put back onto the stove to boil again and repeat the process until all of the freezer’s shelves are free of frost.

If you have a chest freezer, simply put the pots in the freezer and close the lid.

The raised temperature will start to loosen the ice buildup on its walls. These type of freezers take more towels to clean as the ice will fall to the bottom.

For either type of freezer: Once all the frost is gone, wipe the freezer’s walls and shelves down with a rag dipped in a combination of water and baking soda, drying well afterwards, making sure to clean the freezer’s gaskets. Replace food.

How NOT to defrost the Freezer So Often Don’t use the freezer like a refrigerator. If you’re going to go in it, know what you’re after, and close it tightly afterwards.

Don’t open the freezer when the kitchen is hot from cooking.

Label containers so you know what is in them.

With the prevalence of genetically modified organisms, dangerous pesticides, and herbicides being sprayed on the fruits and vegetables, more and more of us are choosing organic when we can. But due to misinformation on the market and some companies pushing everything organic, it can become confusing what to buy organic, and what we don’t have to worry about.

Why Buy Organic?

There are many reasons to buy organic foods. Organic fruits and veggies don’t use manmade chemical pesticides, fossil fuel- or sewagebased fertilizers or genetically modified seeds. It is healthier for you because the soil is left in better condition after repeated plantings.

Organic farmers who take the best care of their land will do “crop rotation” to reintroduce nutrients back into the soil, and even sometimes letting ground fallow, that is letting the ground rest without crops being put into it for a season or more in order to let it recuperate. Fruits and vegetables thus grown are also healthier because you don’t consume harmful pesticide residues left on conventional produce.

But not so fast. Just because something is “all natural” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good for you! If you’re concerned, inquire what a company’s specific practices are before you decide to buy.

What’s the problem with non-organic produce?

According to Environmental Working Group (EWG) pesticide exposure is linked

with a range of other health problems, including: hormone disruption, cancer, brain toxicity, and skin, eye, and lung irritation.

Traditional farming uses chemicals which contaminate fruits and vegetables, but the problems aren’t just isolated to the skins of the plants. According to rodalenews.com, “what many people don't realize is that the problem of pesticides in food… sink into the most nutritious parts of fruits and vegetables—and can't be washed or peeled off.”

How to Choose Organic as Cheaply as Possible

•When buying organic fruits and vegetables, buy what you need for your immediate use for recipes. Due to the increased cost, if you buy something and end up wasting it, you will end up wasting more money.

•According to “Saving Money on Organic Food” at organicliaison.com, “Remember that thin-skinned fruits and vegetables are the MOST susceptible to pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and so on. If you have to limit your purchases, be sure to buy the following foods ORGANIC: apples, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, pears, lettuce, peppers, and spinach.”

•Buy in season and in bulk. That way the fruits and vegetables that you buy will be both freshest and plentiful. After you get them, whatever you’re not going to use, prepare and freeze or can for future use.

•Use coupons wherever possible. Buying organic is expensive enough. If you can save money from the manufacturer, why not take advantage of it?

What to do if you’re concerned

Buy organic whenever possible, but for those items that you do not buy organic, make sure to wash or peel the fruits and vegetable skin to avoid as much contamination as possible.

Grow your own fruits and vegetables.

That way you know what you put on them (if anything.) If you’re able to have a little plot of land yourself, don’t use pesticides or herbicides. There are natural methods of dealing with both weeds and insect infestations on your plants if you take some time and energy to look for them.

Get to know your local famers. Talk to them at the farmer’s market and ask them what practices that they use.

Lobby! Talk to your congressman and senators to get pesticides and herbicides outlawed in order so that your children and grandchildren don’t have to worry about them in the future.

If you have some old t-shirts, and don’t really want to get rid of them, there are a variety of things that you can do to find other uses for them that take just a bit of time and effort.

Most of the things you can do with them don’t even require many more materials, and if they do, more likely than not they’re lying around your house, just waiting to be found. raglan sleeves, which means extending the sleeve so that there is a single piece to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from underarm to collarbone. Replace material with a lacy fabric, adding a centimeter for seam allowance. If you like, cut off some of the bottom of the shirt and accent with the same lace you used for the sleeves, allowing for a seam once again.

T-Shirts Repurposing

“Lacy Thing.” Starting with a white t-shirt, and make

T-Shirt Apron: Starting with an over-large t-shirt with a design on it, cut as large of a rectangle out the front of the shirt from as possible. You can use a smaller shirt, but when doing so, you’ll have to either use coordinating fabric, or use another shirt, for the straps or ruffle. According to rufflesandstuff.com “You can also make the apron larger by using a coordinating knit [fabric] to make a larger rectangle for the ‘background’ of the skirt image.”

Fold the bottom of the shirt to the bottom of the design, folding the t-shirt’s hem down for a more professional appearance. Sew this folded-up into four even sections, one of the section being divided again in half for two spoon slots. Cut the back of the shirt into 4 strips of 4 inches wide, by 24 inches long. Fold each strip of fabric in half and sew the cut sides together, and sew along the fold. Sew one of these strips on each side of the apron for the ties, and sew another two at the top for the part that goes around your neck.

(Non-sewing method)As an alternative to sewing a tshirt apron, you can simply cut up an old shirt to make an apron. Take an old t-shirt design side up and cut the sleeves and seams off at an angle to-

wards the collar. Flip over and cut along the collar seam. Then cut the t-shirt armpit to armpit, removing the section that is from the collar seam down to where you just cut. Cut from the bottom of the t-shirt up to 3 inches from the armpit on both sides, cutting off that rectangle.

Cut up 1½ inches and over to the opposite armpit. When you get to the other armpit, simply cut up. These two pieces of t-shirt become the ties. If you want, take the leftover material and sew pockets and/or a ruffle on the apron.

Braided T-Shirt Yarn Rug: Make t-shirts into yarn.

For instructions on how to make T-shirt yarn, see last month’s issue of For Sale Local online. Start with t-shirt yarn, as many “balls” of yarn as you want your rug to be.

The more t-shirt yarn that you start with for this process, the larger your rug will be. Braid the tshirts together as if you were working with a plait of hair (that is 3 sections), attaching the t-shirt yarn to a peg in order to make it easier to braid, and making sure to tighten as you go along, so that it does not unravel later on. You can either do all the braiding first, and then sew or sew as you go along.

When braiding, think about how you want the final rug to look like. If you want solid bands of color, several of your braids need to be the same color, or similar. If you want a more variegated color scheme, mix up the colors as much as possible. When starting a new color, either sew the one strip to the next, or if you don’t want to mess with sewing the different colors together, make a tiny hole in one strip and looping the new color through.

According to mypoppet.com.au, “To make an oval rug, take a long, straight piece of braid and fold it around itself.” If you want a short, wide rug, start with a shorter length; conversely, if you want a longer, narrow rug, start with a longer length. When laying out the rug, make sure to wind it clockwise, otherwise it won’t work, and the work will get stuck under the sewing machine arm.

Fit your sewing machine with a “jersey” needle and with an extension table if you have one. Start sewing at the top of the initial loop with a sewing ma-

chine set for the widest Zigzag stitch, but medium length setting. As you sew, push the edges together.

When you get to the first curve, loop the braid around the end, tucking the beginning tail underneath, and sew around, fastening the loose braid end. As you go around the corners allow extra braiding to prevent the edges curling up. When finished, tuck the end of the braid under the rug and sew over a couple of times to fasten in place.

T-Shirt Drape Vest: Taking an extra-large men’s tshirt, remove the arm, neck, and seams. Open up and drape over your neck in front of your body.

T-Shirt Pillows: Take a t-shirt and cut as equal sized rectangles out of the material, front and back using a pair of “scalloping” scissors, if desired to make a zigzag pattern in the material. Sew around three of the edges of the rectangle. Take poly-fill and stuff to the desired firmness. Sew up the last edge. Decorate with ribbons, buttons or lace, if desired.

Grommet Shoulder Top: Separate the t-shirt along

the top, removing both the top and collar seams. Replace seams on both sides with a piece of leather or similarly sturdy material. Evenly space grommets along both sides of the replaced seam. With a cord, t-shirt yarn, or ribbon, refasten both sides back together.

Fashion House Inspired Top: Turn a t-shirt inside

out. With sewing chalk sketch out a design onto the fabric, leaving allowances for the seams; they are to be left intact. Carefully cut out the shapes, and turn rightside out again. Wear a halter dress over the t-shirt for wowing effect.

Braided-Back-T-shirt: Start with a t-shirt, front side

down. Cut a J from the right side from about inch or so from the center of the t-shirt to about ¾ the way down the shirt. Repeat process with the left side, making a reversed J shape instead. Looking from the top of the t-shirt, you will have a rounded up-side down letter T if you have done it correctly. Cut the middle section of the shirt into 3 strips and braid, stretching the t-shirt fabric as you go along.

Cut each of the sides of the letter T into 4 sections. With the bottom 3 such sections, cut into 3 strips and braid, once again stretching the t-shirt fabric as

you go along. Tie or sew with coordinating thread the angled braids onto the middle section. Cut off the sleeves at the seams. After doing so, cut the last section into thirds and braid, stretching as you go along, and tie or sew to the center braid. Note: while sewing will make it stay together better, it can be tied, but may untie during washing, forcing you to repeat the whole process again, so sewing is recommended.

T-shirt Wreath: Starting with a foam wreath and

T-shirt iPod/MP3 holder: Measure around your upper arm. Measure the length of your iPod or MP3 player,. The width of the material needs to be the same as the measurement around your arm, plus a bit more for seam allowance. The height of the material needs to be double the measurement and a 1.2 inch allowance on either side. Hem both sides.

Female T-Shirt Summer top: Start with a

short-sleeved t-shirt. Measure a piece of elastic around your chest just under your arms, pulling it snugly; the smaller chested you are the tighter you’ll want the elastic to be. Cut the elastic leaving an extra inch or more for sewing, you can always trim it later.

Attach a safety pin to the elastic, making a small hole in the existing bottom hem of the tshirt, running the elastic through the hem, sewing the elastic ends together. Sew the small hole you made shut. Fold the shirt’s sleeves square with the top of the shirt and pin in place with safety pins.

Mark a straight line at the shirt’s shoulder level, pinning to hold in place, and cut. Hem the bottom of the sleeve and new opening. Sew both remaining edges of the sleeves to the shirt to use as pockets.

You can repeat the process of adding elastic to the armhole hem, as above, but it really isn’t necessary. If you feel that the sleeve openings are a bit too large and any items stored therein will fall out, you can close the sleeve hole on top some with a few stitches.

With these suggestions, why don’t you raid your drawers and closets for old t-shirts to figure out new ways of using them? More suggestions on how to repurpose things next time. n

a t-shirt cut into strips, wrap the wreath tightly with the t-shirt fabric, gluing as you go along. Accent with dried flowers, miniature figurines, ribbons, letters, etc. If you want the wreath to have a specific design when you are finished, pay attention to the way that you cut the t-shirt up.
