Baker County commissioners gave the goahead Wednesday for the county’s emergency services manager to prepare the paperwork necessary to declare a drought emergency. “We need to declare the county is in an emergency based on the fact that we’re dry this year and we had a drought last year,” Commissioner Tim Kerns said. “We haven’t even made up for that.” Last year the commissioners declared a drought emergency on March 18, and Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed a drought declaration for the county on April 20.

DALLAS — Gunmen shot and killed five police officers and wounded seven others during a protest over fatal police shootings of black men in other states, authorities said. It appeared to be the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement since the 2001 terrorist attacks.

State Sen. Ted Ferrioli predicts Oregon voters will reject a $3 billion-per-year corporate tax hike in the Nov. 8 election, but the John Day Republican also expects he and his legislative colleagues will end up debating the same issue in 2017. Ferrioli, the Senate minority leader whose district includes Ferrioli Baker City, took an informal two-day tour of Baker County Wednesday and Thursday.

The Veterans Memorial Hall in Baker City was quiet Thursday afternoon, but Bobby Henshaw knew the tranquility wouldn’t last long. “It’s gonna be loud in here on Saturday,” Henshaw said. Henshaw is commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3048, and as he wiped

clean a table in the Hall he talked about preparing for one of the bigger VFW fundraisers: breakfasts during the Hells Canyon Motorcycle Rally. He expects close to 150 bikers and other Baker City residents to fuel themselves with an early meal both Saturday and Sunday. Bikers and the VFW are a natural fit, Henshaw said.

“A lot of the bikers that come to the breakfast, I’d say 30 to 40 percent of them are veteran biker groups,” Henshaw said. “They feel safe and comfortable here.” Everyone is invited to attend the breakfast at the Hall, 2005 Valley Ave. (between First and Second streets).

The Wednesday morning arrest of two Baker City men and a search of the home where they had been staying resulted in two more arrests Wednesday afternoon. Police first arrested Jason Troyer, 40, on a Parole and Probation detainer and two outstanding warrants. Jacob Grammon, 20, was arrested on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm. District Attorney Matt Shirtcliff said Thursday that he declined to file that charge.

Nothing silent about summer at Baker schools ■ Crews are replacing the high school boiler and doing other projects at South Baker, Middle School

By Chris Collins

ccollins@bakercityherald.com

There’s a lot of digging going on around the Baker School District this summer. And the dirt that’s flying now is making room for changes that will provide a safer, more comfortable and even more enjoyable environment for staff and students when school resumes at summer’s end, district officials said. At South Baker Intermediate

TODAY Issue 26, 24 pages

School, workers have made repairs to the roof-draining system on the northwest end of the building, said Doug Dalton, the District’s chief financial officer and business manager. Along with that work, new curbing and wider sidewalks are being installed to make more room for students as they wait to get on and off the buses. The changes also will provide more room for buses to turn onto the street after leaving the school.
