AtaGlance–TheAssessment andApplicationProcess

TheprocessforapplyingforascholarshipatFSMisthesameforbothYear7and Year9.Thenumberofscholarshipawardsfortheschoolisnotfixedbutisbased uponperformanceandmeritrelativetothesizeandstrengthofthefield. Exceptionalcandidatesmaybeconsideredformorethanonescholarship.The valueofanyscholarshipisatthediscretionoftheHeadmaster.

Eachsectionofthisguidecontainsmoredetailedinformationonthecriteria, assessmentanddecisionmakingprocessforeachScholarship,howeverasan overviewtheprocesswillinvolve:

1.AcompletedapplicationsenttotheRegistrar-admissions@fsmschool.com. ApplicationsmaybesubmittedatanytimeandwillbereviewedfromNovemberAugustforthefollowingacademicyear.

2.Candidates'applicationswillbereviewedbytherelevantschoolleader(s)and thoseshortlistedwillbeinvitedforaScholarshipAssessmentDay.Theinvitations willcontaindetailsofthetimingsoftheday,aswellasmoredetailedinformationto enablecandidatestofullyprepare.ForthosepupilsapplyingtojoinFSM,this invitationwillalsoincludearequestforareferencefromtheircurrentteacher(s) withintheirchosenscholarshipawardarea(s),alongwiththemostrecentcopyof theirschoolreport.

3.Scholarshipresultsandawardswillbeconfirmedwithin2weeksofthe assessment.

Onceawarded,scholarshipswillbereassessedannually,andweanticipatetheywill continueuntiltheendofYear11subjecttothesuccessfulcandidatesexhibiting satisfactorycommitmentandattitudetowardstheirownprogress.

WhatwearemostseekinginanAcademicScholar

AnAcademicScholaratFSMissomeonewholoveslearningandispreparedtoworkhard toachievetheirconsiderablepotential.Asaschool,wearepassionateaboutdeveloping ourpupilsaslifelonglearners,thereforewearealsokeentoawardAcademic Scholarshipstothosewhoareabletoreflectontheirstrengthsandweaknessesas learnersandwhoareseekingtofurtherdeveloptheirabilitytolearnbothindependently andcollaboratively.

Whilecurrentschools’referencesandotherinformationtheysupplyareanimportant touchstoneforourjudgments,thisisfirmlybalancedbyanindividual’sabilitytomakean impactwhiletheyarewithus.Wewanttofindoutifcandidatescanadoptameasured andholisticapproachtotheirlearningatFSM.

Howwillweassessshortlistedcandidates,includingwhattheywill needtoprepare/bringwiththem?

Unlikeourotherscholarships,AcademicScholarshipsareawardedbytheHeadandyou donotapply.TheHeadwillreviewavarietyofevidencewhenconsideringcandidates, forexampleassessmentresults,recentschoolreportsandreferencesfromschoolstaff. Forthoseseekingtojointheschool,thiswillincludetheresultsofassessments conductedaspartoftheadmissionsprocess.

WhybeanAcademicScholaratFSM?Whatwillbeavailableto furtherextendandbenefitpupilschosenasscholars?

InYears7-8,weensureeachAcademicScholarhasamentor(assignedbasedonthe pupils’interestsandstrengths),whowillmeeteachoftheirmenteesregularlyto supportandextendtheirloveofaparticularsubject/field.Ourprimaryambitionisnot toburdenthemwithextraworkbuttofurtherigniteandsparkinterestandextendtheir understandingaboveandbeyondwhatcanbeprovidedintheclassroom.

AstheyprogressintoYears9andbeyond,wewillmentorourAcademicScholarsto completetheHigherProjectQualification(HPQ),whichisequivalenttohalfaGCSE. Thisexcitingqualificationofferspupilstheopportunitytoinvestigateatopicoftheir choosing,recordtheirresearch,deliverapresentationandproduceawrittenreportor artefact.Aswellasahugelyvaluableprocessinitsownright,completinganHPQis invaluablepreparationfortheExtendedProjectQualification(EPQ)whichmanypupils areencouragedtocompleteinYears12-13,duetotheaddedvalueitcanbringto applicationstotopuniversitiesandemployers.

Whatwearemostseekinginascholar,includingwhatwe willbelookingforinanapplication

TheArtDepartmentprovidesastimulatingenvironmentwherechildrencanlearnto draw,paint,print,workintextilesandthreedimensions,workcollaboratively,design, imagine,discuss,reflect,adapt,developandachievepersonalbestsintheworkthat theydo.Weaimtoofferasmanyopportunitiesaspossibleforchildrentoexperience differenttechniquesandmethodologies,andtobeabletoexploreartintheclassroom andbeyond.Thechildrenareencouragedtoexpressthemselvesfreelyandcreatehigh qualityworkenablingthemtoflourishandbecomecreativeinspirationalartists.

Wearelookingforallroundcreativeindividualswhoarepreparedtoputinhardwork andeffort,makingthemostofopportunitiesgiventothem.Theyneedtohaveagenuine interest,skill,passionandenthusiasmforthesubject.Candidatesshouldbecommitted, flexibleintheirapproachandhavealifelongloveofart.

Thecandidatewillbeexpectedtopresentaportfolioofworkwhichdemonstratestheir versatilityinarangeofmedia.Itshouldcontainamaximumof6piecesofworkwhich havebeenundertakeninthelast2yearsatschoolorhome.

Directobservationaldrawingtoshowtheirknowledgeofform,proportionandtoneanda teacher-ledcreativesession.

WhybeanArtScholaratFSM?Whatwillbeavailabletofurther extendandbenefitpupilschosenasscholars?

ArtScholarsarementoredbytheHeadofDepartment.Theyaregivenopportunitiestomeet anddiscusstheirtalentandworkagreeingwaystodeveloptheirskills.Studentsareoffered theopportunitytogotoexhibitionsandgalleriesbothlocallyandfurtherafield. Opportunitiesarearrangedforscholarstoleadondevelopingtheartisticskillsofyounger students.Therearealsodedicatedextrastudysessionsavailableforstudentstoattend wherepersonalisedadviceandguidanceisgiven.Studentsarealsoencouragedto contributetothesetdesignsfortheschool'sdramaproductions.

Dance Award

Whatwearemostseekinginascholar,includingwhatwewillbe lookingforinanapplication

DancescholarsatFSMwillbeexpectedtoengageinarangeofdancegenresincludingbutnot limitedto:contemporary,modern,jazz,tap,balletandstreetdance.Itisexpectedthatscholars willparticipateinadditionalstretching,strengtheningandbalanceclassestocomplementtheir dancetraining.AnFSMdancescholarwillparticipateinschoolperformancesandbecomean ambassadorfordanceacrosstheschool.Throughthethreestrandsofthedancecurriculum: create,performandanalyse,studentswillshowatalentanddedicationtobecominganexcellent danceartist.

Howwewillassessshortlistedcandidates,includingwhattheywill needtoprepare/bringwiththem?

CandidatesapplyingforaDancescholarshipshouldprepareasolodanceperformance,aminimum of2minutesinlength.Candidatesshouldbepreparedforaworkshopstyleauditionwheretheir abilitytopickupsetchoreographyandcreatetheirownchoreographywillbeassessed,alongside theirtechnique,flexibility,balanceandco-ordination.Candidatesshouldattendinfulldance attireandbepreparedtoworkbarefoot.

Howwewillassessshortlistedcandidates,includingwhatthey willneedtoprepare/bringwiththem?

DancescholarsatFSMwillbegivenindividualisedcoachingbytheDirectorofDance,giving thesestudentsspecifictargets,exercisesandtrainingtodeveloptheirDancetechnique. Scholarswillbegiventheopportunitytoperforminvariouseventswhichinclude,butarenot limitedto:concerts,assemblies,competitions,productionsandshowcases.Alongside developingtheirdanceperformancetechnique,successfulapplicantsforourDancescholar programmewillalsobegivenopportunitiestodeveloptheirchoreographicskills,givingthem first-handexperienceofworkingfromastimulus,choreographing,refiningandteaching Danceandshowcasingtheirchoreographicwork.Inadditiontothis,DanceScholarsatFSM willhavetheirownenrichmenttrips,wheretheywillgainexperienceofattendingworkshops withindustryprofessionalsandwatchingprofessionalDanceperformances.

Drama Award

Whatwearemostseekinginascholar,includingwhatwewillbe lookingforinanapplication

ADramaScholaratFSMispassionateabouttheirsubject.Theywilldemonstratenotonly theirindividualabilitytoperformaplannedpiecebutalsotheirwillingnesstocollaborate andworkcreativelywithothers.Theywilldemonstrateconfidencealongsidean understandingofsharingthespace.Theabilitytotakedirection(includingtakingarisk)will beessential.

Howwewillassessshortlistedcandidates,includingwhattheywill needtoprepare/bringwiththem?

Thecandidatesshouldpreparetwocontrastingmonologues(notpoems).Theseshouldbe betweenoneandtwominuteslongeach.

Successfulscholarswillshowtheyunderstandthecontextofthespeechesby demonstratinganunderstandingoftheplaytheyaretakenfrom.

Theinterview(whichmaybegrouped)willofferthecandidatesanopportunitytotalkabout theirwiderunderstandingofdramaandtheirinterestinthetheatre.Candidatesshouldbe abletoexplainwhytheylovedramaandgiveexamplesofparticularplaysortheatrical experiencestheyhavefoundenjoyableorinspiring.Successfulscholarswillbeexpectedto demonstratetheyhavetakenanactivepartinpreviousproductions.

Theywillalsotakepartinanimprovisationtask.Candidateswillbegiventimetopreparea shortperformanceonagivenscenarioasagroup.Successfulscholarswilluseimaginative detailtocreateanengagingcharacterandsituation.

Ifcandidatesalsohaveaninterestinbackstage,i.e.lightingandsetdesign,theyshouldcome preparedtodemonstratehowtheirpreferreddesignskillcouldbeappliedtoasceneina productionoftheirchoice.

Smallpropsareallowed,alongwithrolesignifiers(ratherthancostumes)andcandidates shouldbringloosefittingorsportsclothing,suitableforthepracticalelementofthe assessment.

WhybeaDramaScholaratFSM?Whatwillbeavailabletofurther extendandbenefitpupilschosenasscholars?

AteachstageofFSMschoollife,thechildrenareinvolvedwithoneofthethreemajor performanceseachyear.Recentseniorproductionshaveincluded;'GuysandDolls','Charlie andtheChocolateFactory','Bugsy'and'PeterPan'.Successfulscholarswouldnotonlybe expectedtoauditionforaleadingroleonstagebutalsotakealeadershiprolebehindthe scenes.

DramaispartoftheFSMcurriculumfromYear3,sowerunwholeschoolprojectsincluding ourDramaticReadingcompetition,theatretripsandTEDTalks.Dramasessionsarepartof ouroptionalSaturdayEnrichmentandactivityprogramme.AnFSMDramaScholarwouldbe expectedtotakepartinallaspectsofdramaprovisionatschool,aswellasbeinginvitedto theatretripsanddramaticexperiencesnotopentoothersintheiryeargroup.

Wheresuitable,successfulscholarsmaybeinvitedtohelpwithJuniorDramaClubsor Productions.

Ouraimistonurtureeachindividualandfacilitatethedevelopmentoftheirtalentandability intheperformingarts.

TheFSMstageissetforpupilswhocanpairnaturalabilitywithoutstandingtalentandan aspirationtosucceed.

Music Award

Whatwearemostseekinginascholar,includingwhatwe willbelookingforinanapplication

MusicScholarsatFSMwillbeexpectedtomaintainhighstandardsofmusicalexcellence andtobeambassadorsformusicwithintheschoolthroughpersonalpracticeand enthusiasticparticipation.Theywillbeexpectedtotakepartinallschoolconcerts, participateinchoirsandensembleswhereappropriate,andpursuetheirinterestideallyto GCSEandbeyond.AnFSMMusicScholarwillbeencouragedtoflourishasamusician throughperseverance,resilienceandcamaraderie,developingtheirmusicmakingtothe highestlevelwhilehavingfunintheprocess!

Howwillweassessshortlistedcandidates,includingwhatthey willneedtoprepare/bringwiththem?

CandidatesapplyingforaMusicScholarshipatYear7shouldoffertwoormore instruments.OneoftheseshouldbeatGrade3standardoraboveandoneatanyother standard(oneofthesemaybevoice).CandidatesapplyingforaMusicScholarshipat Year9shouldoffertwoormoreinstruments.OneoftheseshouldbeatGrade5standard orabove,andoneatGrade3standardorabove.Oneoftheseinstruments(first,or second)maybevoice.Whilstitwouldbeidealforcandidatestomeettheaboveformal standard,giftandpotentialforaninstrumentarealsoimportant.

Candidatesinvitedtoauditionwillbeexpectedtopresenttwocontrastingpiecesontheir firstinstrumentandonepieceontheirsecond.Auraltestsandsightreadingwillalsobe performedtothestandardoftheirfirstinstrument.Therewillalsobeashortinterviewwith theDirectorofMusictoassessacandidate’smusicalinterestandpromise.Anaccompanist canbeprovided(wewouldaskforthemusicinadvance)butcandidatesmustbringtheir owninstrumentsandmusic.

WhybeaMusicScholaratFSM?Whatwillbeavailableto furtherextendandbenefitpupilschosenasscholars?

StudentschosentobeMusicScholarsatFSMwillbeindividuallymentoredbythe DirectorofMusicwheretheywillbegiventheopportunitytomeetanddiscusstheir specialismsregularly(thereisalsothepotentialforregularMusicTheorylessonsonan individualbasis,withtheaimtotaketheABRSMGrade5theoryexamifnotalready completed).FSMofferstheopportunityforregular(formalandinformal)concerts, Christmasservices,assemblies,competitionsandproductions,thereforetheyhave ampleopportunitytoperforminfrontofanaudience.Itishopedinthefuturethatthe MusicScholarswillhavetheirownconcertatalocalvenue,wheretheycanshowcase theirtalentsinamorespecific‘recital’setting.Finally,MusicScholarswillhavetheirown enrichmenttripstowatchprofessionalchoirsandorchestras,aswellascombinewith DramaScholarstowatchmusicalproductionsintheWestEnd,andclosertohome.

ScienceandTechnology Award

Whatwearemostseekinginascholar,includingwhatwewill belookingforinanapplication

Scholarsshoulddisplayapassionforthesubjectandhavestrongacademicpotentialdemonstrablereadingaroundthesubjectorsupra-curricularengagement(e.g.projects completedathome,visitstorelevantactivitiesetc.)shouldbeevidentintheapplication.

WearelookingforscienceandtechnologyscholarswhodisplaytheengineeringLearning HabitsofMind-curiosity,creativity,open-mindedness,resilience,resourcefulness, collaboration,reflectionandethicalconsideration.Theseshouldbeevidentinthewider projectsthattheyhavecompletedathomeoratschoolandshouldbecomeapparent throughoutthepracticalandinterviewelementsoftheassessmentprocess.

Scholarsshouldhavestrongpracticalskillsasdemonstratedbyapracticalelementinthe assessmentprocess

Strongcommunication,leadershipandinterpersonalskillstoenablethemtobeeffective leadersinsideandoutsidetheclassroom.Thiswillbedemonstratedbothintheinterview andinthepracticalaspectoftheassessment.

•Thereare2practicaltasks,oneComputing/DTtaskandoneScienceoneinsmall groups-Followingasetofinstructionstocompleteanunfamiliartask.Worktogether effectivelyasateam,demonstratinglearningpowersandinterpersonalskills.Students arenotrequiredtobringanythingforthispartoftheassessmentprocess.

•GoogleFormscholarshipassessment30minutes-wewilllendthestudents Chromebooksifrequired.Studentsmaywishtobringapencilcasetomakerough jottings.

•Interview-withtheHeadofDigitalLearningandHeadofSciencetodiscussand reflectonthepracticaltaskandfindoutmoreabouttheirpassionforthesubject.

Sport Award

Whatweareseekinginascholar,includingwhatwewillbe lookingforinanapplication

Firstandforemost,weareseekingtalent.BeingaSportsScholarisabouttheabilitytolead physicallyonthesportsfield.Oursuccessfulcandidatescantakeonfeedback,reflectontheir ownperformanceandmakeprogress.Beingcoachableandhavinganoutstandingattitudeto yourtheirprogressionandbringingonothersaroundthemisaqualitythatweseekoutinall ofourSportsScholars.Whilstwelookforscholarstoexcelinatleasttwoofourmajorsports (Football,Hockey,Rugby,Netball,Cricket,Athletics,TennisorSwimming),wewillconsider thosethatareexceptionalinone,beittraditionalornon-traditional.

Howwewillassessshortlistedcandidates,includingwhatthey willneedtoprepare/bringwiththem?

Candidateswillundertakeaphysicalscreeningandpracticalactivitysession.(Thiswillinclude fitness,mobilityandstrengthtesting).

CandidateswillmeetourDirectorofSport.Theywilltakepartinpracticalsessions:thatwill includeanarrayofsportsandactivities.

ThebreadthofopportunitythatourSportsScholarswillreceivewillbevastand engaging.Itisnotjustaboutbeinganexcellentathlete,itisaboutmakingsurethat whenitcomestosportingopportunity,itisgraspedwithbothhands.

WhenSportsScholarsatFSMleaveat16,theywillhavereceivedsuchanarrayof opportunitiesthattheywillneverfearandwillalwaysembracenewandchallenging opportunities.Ourmissionistoprovideandpromoteopportunitiesthatmotivateand encouragestudentstobeaspirational.

Scholarswillreceivebi-weeklyStrength,Conditioning,MobilityandFlexibilitytrainingon topofGamesandPE.TheSportsScholarshipprogrammeisdesignedtoequipour studentswiththeknowledge,understandingandabilitytosustainalong,healthy,and prosperouscareerasanathleteinahighlydemandingandcompetitiveindustry.
