SAFER GRANT

The Forney City Council approved acceptance of a $2.89 million FEMA Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant to fund nine new firefighter positions over three years. Prepared and submitted by Fire Chief John Holcomb and Grant Coordinator Nicholas Nix, the grant will strengthen the department’s staffing and emergency response capabilities. FEMA will cover 75% of salary and benefits in years one and two, and 35% in year three. This marks the department’s third SAFER Grant award under Chief Holcomb’s leadership, reflecting a continued effort to enhance public safety as Forney grows. The onboarding and compliance process will begin soon, with the performance period starting in March 2026.

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES NEW FIVE-YEAR WASTE AND RECYCLING AGREEMENT WITH CWD

Forney City Council approved and authorized a new five-year solid waste and recycling services agreement with Community Waste Disposal (CWD). The City’s current contract, established in 2021, will end on February 28, 2026, and the new agreement will take effect on March 1, 2026, continuing through February 28, 2031. Under the new contract, existing service levels will remain the same, with one significant improvement: residential recycling collection will increase from every other week to weekly service.

LAYNE’S CHICKEN SITE PLAN APPROVED

MEETING DATE: OCTOBER 21ST, 2025 The next council meeting will be on November 4th.

The City Council approved a site plan for Layne’s Chicken, to be located east of the intersection of South F.M. 548 and Kroger Drive. The request, submitted by Aqueous Engineering on behalf of the property owner, establishes the site design for a new drive-thru restaurant. The property, currently used as overflow parking for the AMC Classic movie theater, is part of the Mustang Crossing Planned Development, which was approved by City Council on November 18, 2003. Under this zoning, drive-thru restaurants are permitted by right.

FORNEY FIREFIGHTERS AND CAREFLITE CREW HONORED WITH LIFE SAVING AWARD

Mayor Jason Roberson, the Forney City Council, and Deputy Fire Chief Russell Bannister recognized Firefighters Lauren Powers and Hayden Matthews, along with CareFlite crew members Nicholas McCarty and Stone Phillips, for their quick and coordinated response to a medical emergency on August 28, 2025, that saved a patient’s life. The team’s swift actions and professionalism exemplify the department’s motto, “Whatever It Takes.” Each was presented with the Life Saving Award in recognition of their dedication and service to the citizens of Forney.
