Hope Rising EDU info@hoperisingedu.com www.hoperisingedu.com

What does hope mean? Is hope wishing for something or is hope wanting something? There is a big difference.

A wish is like a fantasy, something you can not control. But hope is something you want. It is something you know you can have because you can make it happen.

My Best Me makes hope easy to learn. More hope means better grades, thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Hope will help you find excellent friends, improve your opportunities and create a successful future.

My Best Me will teach you that hope is not a wish or an emotion; it is your decision. Anybody can have hope no matter who they are or the challenges they face.

Hope is like a treasure map. The treasure is your goal or the thing your really want. The journey to the treasure is your pathway. Your dedication and attitude to make it happen is your willpower.

Here are the three simple steps to hope

1. You set a goal. Your goals are all the treasures or things you want in your life.

2. You find a pathway. These are the many different ways or roads that lead you to your treasures.

3. You build willpower. This is the strength and force within you to get to your treasures no matter what obstacles are in your way.

Look at page 2. What are the three steps for creating hope?

1. You set

2. You find

3. You build

Understand

The My Best Me lessons talk about you, what you believe in, and what you experience in life. The feelings you face might be experiences your classmates struggle with as well. Write your feelings down in your journal and/or talk about them with your teacher, counselor, parent, or guardian.

Apply

Your teacher will ask everyone in your class to sign a Student Pledge because the lessons talk about personal things. That means that everyone promises to actively participate in class, be kind, thoughtful, and trustworthy with your classmates’ feelings in order to build hope in one another.

Watch

Watch this true story of Norman and Lisa. Why did Norman have hope? Do you think Lisa had hope when the current was pulling her under and away? What gave her hope?

Reflect

Do you think you have hope? Please explain. Do you think you can increase your hope? How?

I use hope by setting goals, finding pathways, and building willpower to make my dreams become reality.

Healthy Habits 14

Goal Pathways

Observe

To learn that I am responsible for creating healthy habits in my life

Circle the picture(s) that shows a healthy habit. Cross off the picture(s) that shows an unhealthy habit.

Comment

What is a habit? __________________________________________________________

What is one reason you chose the circled picture as healthy?

What is one reason you chose the crossed out picture as unhealthy?

Understand

We all have healthy and unhealthy habits. Habits are activities that we perform regularly. Sometimes living an unhealthy life seems so much easier than living a healthy one. We need to understand that unhealthy habits result in unhealthy bodies, but we can start changing those habits today.

38

• Find a healthy habit you want to develop.

• Focus on one new habit at a time.

• Think about the steps you will take to create the new habit.

• Write down your goal and hang it somewhere you will see it often.

• Make a game of the new habit.

• Give yourself at least 30 days to fully develop the habit.

• Ask your family and friends to help you develop this habit.

• Reward yourself for following your plan.

• Do not give up, even if you mess up. Keep at it!

• Share your success with others.

Write

Let’s see some examples of healthy habits. Draw a line to link the habit with the image.

Wash my hands before I eat

Brush my teeth 3 times a day

Clean my room everyday

Thank my mom for my food

Make my bed every morning

Play outside everyday

Sleep 8 to 10 hours every night

Apply

Here is some advice for how to make a healthy habit. Think of one healthy habit you want to establish and apply these instructions.

Reflect

Decide on one new habit that you would like to create now and the reason why. I am going to __________________________________________________________.

Make a poster about the new habit you want to establish in your life. Use pictures and drawings to help motivate you to accomplish your goal.

Watch Watch Rules Don’t Apply to Me by Julie Cook

Understand

On the street, there is a lot of movement. We see people hurrying along on sidewalks. There are many cars, bicycles, motorcycles, and buses driving here and there. Everyone is in a hurry and wants to arrive as soon as possible.

The signs on the previous page help prevent accidents. They are there to keep everyone moving in an orderly and safe manner. If we obey the signs, we can arrive on time at our destination safely.

Act

Look at the picture of this neighborhood. What signs can you add to make it safe for the drivers and people walking around the neighborhood?

Reflect

What signs did you choose to add to the neighborhood? Why?

What rules do you think we need or do not need? Why?

Do you understand why we have classroom rules? Please explain. Are there classroom rules we might need to add or remove? Why?

I obey the signs and rules on the road for my safety and the safety of others.

Sounds All Around

To learn to control the sounds I make

Goal

Pathways

Write

Draw a line between a sound and the object that produces it.

"Lemons, lemons, get your lemons!"

Chirp, chirp, chirp

Meow, meow, meow

Choo, choo, choo

Honk, honk

Woof, woof

Ding dong

Tick-tock

Read

Listen to the story, Decibella and Her 6-Inch Voice.

Understand

There are many sounds and noises that exist all around us. Some of them are pleasant to listen to, like the sound of a bird singing, the praise and encouragement of a dad as he talks to his son, and the waves on the seashore. Yet, other noises can be bothersome, like Decibella’s screaming, a dog barking, or a loud motor. Noises can pollute the air, just like smoke and bad odors do. We produce noises in many

4yu.info/?i=92231

60
23

ways, like with our hands, feet, and voices. Some sounds can irritate others, such as tapping our desk and listening to our music without earphones. When we scream or say unkind words, we create noise pollution. Instead, it is kind to consider others and their activities and ask ourselves, “Will this help or hurt?”

Play - The Market Tunnel

• Stand in two lines and make a tunnel with your arms.

• Each tunnel member is secretly given the name of a fruit. Everyone is given a different fruit name.

• One classmate will be given a piece of paper with the name of a fruit written on it.

• As that person goes through the tunnel, everyone shouts as loud as they can the name of the fruit they were given.

• The classmate going through the tunnel has to guess who the “sales-person” is of the fruit he/she wants to buy.

• Here is a different version of the game: as someone passes through, one person at a time gently says a friendly word to the one passing by.

Comment

Was it easy to guess who was selling your fruit when everyone was shouting at the same time? How did it make you feel? What are 5 ways that Decibella learned about voice volume? Where would it be okay to use our 6-inch voice?

Reflect

What friendly things do you say to others? When do you say them?

Are the words you say to others the same ones that you would like to hear?

I avoid creating noise pollution and only make sounds that are pleasant to hear.

Reaching My Dreams 30

Goal Pathways

Observe

To learn to work hard and never give up in order to achieve my dreams

Look at the pictures below. What do you see happening?

Comment

What is the story about?

What did the boy like to do and what was his dream?

What are some obstacles he had to overcome?

What was he able to accomplish?

76

Watch

Read-along with the book

Little People, Big Dreams: Stephen Hawking by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vega.

What obstacles did Stephen Hawking face?

Did they stop him from achieving his dreams? What goals was Stephen Hawking able to achieve?

Understand

Everyone has dreams and goals that they hope to achieve in their lives. However, there will be times when we encounter obstacles that could interfere with the pursuit of our dreams and might even seem to stop us. In these moments, more than any other time, it is important to stay positive in our thinking, to focus on accomplishing our goals, and to continue with confidence. Then, whatever you set your mind to, you will be able to achieve.

Act - Sharing Compliments

Write one of your goals or dreams at the top of a piece of paper. Pass the paper around the classroom so that every student writes a compliment or words of encouragement on all the other papers. After everyone has done so, return the paper to its original owner. When you are feeling discouraged, you can read these words of encouragement to help you meet your goals.

Reflect

Name obstacles that prevent you from making your dream come true?

What are some ways you can overcome these obstacles?

I will work hard, never give up, and fulfill my dreams.
