In the wake of a tradition that Italian banks have cultivated since the Renaissance, Intesa Sanpaolo is firmly committed to the promotion of art and knowledge, two cornerstones of our country’s identity, prestige and beauty.

These are the motivations that have led to the presentation in London of two masterpieces from the Intesa Sanpaolo collections, Officine a Porta Romana [Factories at Porta Romana] and Tre donne [Three Women], by one of the masters of twentieth-century art, Umberto Boccioni: two extraordinary paintings that form part of the display in the Gallerie d’Italia - Piazza Scala in Milan, one of the three museum venues the Bank has founded to share its palazzi and art collections with the public.

Today, these two artworks are presented at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art as part of the exhibition Woman + Landscape: Umberto Boccioni, 1907 – 1912, alongside other masterpieces by the Italian painter (including the famous Idolo moderno [Modern Idol]) held by the prestigious museum in London. The outstanding nucleus of artworks reunited on this occasion documents and explores Boccioni’s production that in the early twentieth century marked his passage from Divisionism to Futurism. This initiative underlines once more how exhibitions based on artworks from the Intesa Sanpaolo collections provide occasions for further study, advancement and dialogue between collections, as well as partnerships with institutions the world over.

Woman + Landscape is an “international” exhibition by virtue of its contents, vision, and participating experts and institutions. For our Bank, this event is an important recognition of our role in cultural exchange and promotion of Italy’s heritage abroad.

This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the opening of the Estorick Collection at its home in Islington, and a series of events have been organized throughout the year to celebrate this important milestone.

Woman + Landscape: Umberto Boccioni, 1907 – 1912 results from a partnership between the museum and Intesa Sanpaolo, formed in the context of an event concerning Art and Business organized by the Italian Embassy in London. The present collaboration is particularly fitting, since it explores one of the most important artists in our collection – and one of the masters of twentieth-century Italian art as a whole.

During the past two decades, the Estorick Collection has explored modern Italian art from a wide range of perspectives; Umberto Boccioni has featured in many exhibitions, as well as having been the subject of a monographic show dedicated to his sculpture.

This intimate tribute focuses on the period spanning his employment of the Divisionist technique and his adhesion to Futurism, and represents the beginning of a collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo and its collections.

Among the many events that have been organized at the Estorick Collection to mark its twenty years of activity, this focused display of works by Umberto Boccioni is certainly the most appropriate for a birthday celebration. Two very important guests are in attendance, in the form of works by the artist on loan from the Intesa Sanpaolo Collection, which enter into a dialogue with other pieces belonging to the Estorick’s own collection, revealing different aspects of Boccioni’s painting during the period spanning his employment of the Divisionist technique and adhesion to Futurism. The room hosts portraits of women – ‘excellent women’ – who were among the artist’s favourite subjects, and evokes the intimate conversations that undoubtedly took place between them against the developing backdrop of Milan at the turn of the century, reflecting technological advances and the changes they led to. Boccioni moved to Milan in 1907, and soon began to take an interest in the social fabric of the rapidly industrializing city. It was in this transformation that he found inspiration, using a language that was marked by a number of particularly important elements: light, movement and spatiality.

Works of this period, such as Officine a Porta Romana [Factories at

Porta Romana] (pp. 64-65, details pp. 33, 41) and La città che sale [The City Rises] exalt modern life, not only representing urban landscapes, but also revealing the artist’s interest in the events of which he was a witness, something also apparent in other pieces including Rissa in galleria [Riot in the Galleria]. The impressions received by Boccioni following the Venice Biennales of 1903 and 1905 complemented his study of the great masters and of portraitists such as Rembrandt and Van Dyck in the months spent between Paris and Russia in 1906. Upon moving to Milan, the artist engaged with the Symbolist-inspired Divisionism of Giovanni Segantini (1858-1899) and Gaetano Previati (1852-1920), and the works commissioned around this time were strongly influenced by their example, such as the wonderful Campagna Lombarda [Lombard Countryside] and Romanzo di una cucitrice [The Seamstress’s Novel].

Two drawings of 1907 and 1908 represent a perfect introduction to Boccioni’s work at this time, revealing the central role played in the artist’s imagination by female figures. Numerous portraits of his mother, Cecilia Forlani, his sister Amelia, his friend Ines and a number of other female acquaintances chronicle the evolution of his style. The use of counter-light and other atmospheric luminous effects characterize most of these portraits which, although different in terms of style and inspiration, represent a constant, obsessive search to express love and filial adoration.

Two works in charcoal Donna seduta [Seated Woman] (p. 55, detail p. 27), 1907 and Donna anziana seduta [Seated Elderly Woman] (p. 57, detail p. 42), 1908 present fairly traditional subjects and compositional arrangements, but for Boccioni these links with tradition in no way restricted his avant-garde research; the theme may not have been innovative, but did not limit experimentation. In fact, a number of details may be observed that provide insights into how Boccioni began to explore ways of overcoming various challenges, using light to give dynamism to forms – as in the woman’s hair in the 1908 work. The streaks of white at the left allow us to sense the subtle vibrations of the light entering from the window, just as they highlight 26 / 27

the fact that the woman’s hand is not resting but is suspended in the vibrant atmosphere. In the 1907 drawing, forms are succinctly defined by marks that do not render them static or heavy, and which almost appear to foreshadow those ‘lines of force’ that would subsequently become fundamental to the artist’s development of a Futurist vocabulary. In a somewhat conventional image, a new energy thus begins to emerge that gives rise to innovative results without cutting all links with tradition, something reflecting the artist’s strong emotional bond with those people who were ever-present in his life; Boccioni’s avant-garde approach was always tempered by the humanity that surrounded him.

Alongside these two drawings is a work on long-term loan to the Estorick Collection, titled Ritratto di Betty e Nora Baer [Portrait of Betty and Nora Baer] (p. 59, detail p. 29), 1909, depicting the mother (Betty) sitting on a chair holding her two year-old daughter Nora. Betty’s family was originally from Karlsruhe, and after moving to Milan almost certainly became friends with Boccioni through the artist’s mother, in her capacity as a seamstress and embroiderer. According to the Boccioni file conserved in the Getty Research Institute, Betty lived at via Canova 36 together with her friend Elisa Hammerschlag Ruberl. Both were repeatedly portrayed by the artist and mentioned in his many letters to the critic and collector Vico Baer, ​​a cousin of Betty’s and an important point of reference for Boccioni during his short but prolific career.

A work dating from 1914-15 titled Le due amiche [The Two Friends], depicts Betty and Elisa alongside one another in the painter’s studio. The portrait is a Divisionist interpretation with Symbolist overtones, in which light dissolves in the bodies and the environment. The portrait of Betty and Nora Baer remained the property of the family, and was only exhibited on the occasion of an exhibition organized as tribute to Boccioni at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan in 1933. It arrived in England around 1946, when Marianna Baer, the younger sister of Nora, moved to London with her second husband, Rudy Traub. Further confirmation of Betty Baer’s appreciation of Boccioni’s work is given by the presence of two works listed as 28 / 29

port develops between these paintings and drawings, highlighting interesting perspectives and creating an original narrative that enables us to explore an important aspect of the painter’s artistic production. In these paintings we can see the excursus and the growth of Boccioni’s ideas which, departing from a Divisionist technique and an interest in social issues, arrives at a Futurist decomposition of space via Cubism. In a certain sense, these works recreate the intimate space of a Milanese living room at the beginning of the twentieth century with its window open to a city undergoing continual transformation; I like to think that when visitors enter this gallery they will leave behind the Georgian building that houses the Estorick Collection for a while. The ladies gathered here chat pleasantly, perhaps commenting on the recent changes Milan has undergone, while the window – open to the landscape beyond – lets in the new wind of change and progress.

Fra le diverse celebrazioni che sono state organizzate alla Estorick Collection per festeggiare i vent’anni di attività, questo piccolo focus su Umberto Boccioni è sicuramente il più appropriato a una festa di compleanno. Gli ospiti sono due importanti tele in prestito dalla collezione Intesa Sanpaolo, che abitualmente sono esposte nelle Gallerie d’Italia - Piazza Scala, sede museale della banca a Milano, e che si troveranno a dialogare con le opere nella Estorick Collection, svelando segreti ed elementi del periodo fra il Divisionismo e l’adesione dell’artista al Futurismo. La sala ospita ritratti di donne, donne eccellenti che sono state uno dei soggetti più amati dal pittore, ed evoca la intima conversazione delle signore in salotto con in sottofondo la Milano che cambia dell’inizio del secolo, riflettendone le nuove scoperte tecnologiche e i mutamenti da esse derivanti.

Boccioni si trasferì a Milano nel 1907 e iniziò a interessarsi alle problematiche sociali della città che stava velocemente industrializzandosi, e proprio in questa trasformazione egli trovò la sua ispirazione, usando un linguaggio contrassegnato da alcuni elementi di particolare importanza: la luce, il movimento e la spazialità. Nelle opere di questo periodo infatti si esalta la nuova vita moderna, di

dalla finestra così come evidenziano che la mano della donna non è ferma ma sospesa nella vibratile atmosfera. Anche nel foglio del 1907 si notano alcuni tratti che Boccioni utilizza per delineare in maniera succinta le forme, senza bloccarne il movimento, o che rende pesanti, quasi linee di forza, che poi diventeranno fondamentali nello sviluppo futurista dell’artista. In un’immagine consueta si fa largo un’energia nuova, che darà esito a risultati dirompenti, senza per questo tagliare ancora con la tradizione. Ciò è reso possibile proprio perché in Boccioni era forte il legame affettivo nei confronti di quelle persone sempre presenti nella sua vita. L’avanguardia di Boccioni è sempre temperata dall’umanità che lo circonda.

Successivo ai due disegni è il quadro in prestito a lungo termine presso la Estorick Collection Ritratto di Betty e Nora Baer (p. 59, dettaglio p. 29) del 1909, che ritrae la signora Betty Baer, sorridente, seduta su una poltrona con in braccio la figlia Nora, di circa due anni. La famiglia di Betty era originaria di Karlsruhe e dopo il trasferimento a Milano era diventata amica di Boccioni quasi sicuramente attraverso la madre dell’artista Cecilia Forlani, la quale era venuta in contatto con la famiglia grazie alla sua attività di sarta e ricamatrice. Secondo la rubrica di Boccioni conservata al Getty Research Institute, Betty risiedeva a Milano in via Canova 36 insieme all’amica Elisa Hammerschlag Ruberl. Ambedue sono state più volte ritratte e sono sempre ricordate da Boccioni anche in molte lettere al critico e collezionista Vico Baer, cugino di Betty, punto di riferimento importante per tutta la breve ma sicuramente prolifica carriera dell’artista.

Agli anni 1914-1915, risale il dipinto di Boccioni Le due amiche, che ritrae Betty ed Elisa, l’una a fianco all’altra, all’interno dello studio del pittore. Questo ritratto presenta una visione divisionista con una maggiore sensazione simbolista dove la luce si dissolve nei corpi e nell’ambiente. Il ritratto di Betty e Nora Baer rimase sempre di proprietà della famiglia e fu esposto soltanto in occasione della mostra organizzata in omaggio a Umberto Boccioni presso il Castello Sforzesco di Milano nel 1933. Il dipinto giunse in Inghilterra intorno al 1946, quando Marianna Baer, sorella più giovane di Nora, si spostò a Londra insieme al suo secondo marito, Rudy Traub. Ulteriore Un salotto a Milano

temente caotico, per poi ricomporsi subito appena riguadagnata la giusta distanza di lettura. Le modalità con cui è applicato il colore permettono di avvicinare l’Idolo moderno più facilmente a opere che Boccioni realizzò nel corso del 1910, come Rissa in galleria o, addirittura, a dipinti eseguiti alla fine del primo decennio.

“I pittori ci hanno sempre mostrato cose e persone poste davanti a noi. Noi porremo lo spettatore al centro del quadro”. Questo principio, espresso nel manifesto da Boccioni, indirizza la sua ricerca successiva verso una fusione dinamica tra spettatore, ambiente e spazio in continua evoluzione. La macchina e la velocità sono i simboli principali della città moderna. Lo sviluppo di questo tema si realizza nelle opere dedicate alla trasformazione della periferia milanese da terreno agricolo a società industriale, come nel caso di Officine a Porta Romana. In questa tela l’artista rappresenta una società in pieno sviluppo: un preludio a La città che sale di due anni più tardi. L’intento dell’artista è quello di mettere in evidenza il sostanzioso cambiamento della vita urbana moderna, che si fa sempre più frenetica e dinamica. Il paesaggio rappresenta la zona dei Bastioni di Porta Romana, dove abitava: una periferia urbana tra fabbriche e case in costruzione, ancora per metà campagna, colta alla luce cristallina dell’alba come sottolineano le ombre allungate degli operai che vanno al lavoro. Nel dipinto si uniscono l’esaltazione della vita moderna, che per i Futuristi trova il suo fulcro proprio nello sviluppo della metropoli industriale, e l’utilizzo della tecnica divisionista.

Il quadro però pone in un immediato contrasto la nuova atmosfera della città, che si ridesta, con il fluire lento degli operai. Periferie attraversate dalle ombre lunghe dell’alba e dai carri che trasportano materiale edilizio per una città che sta dilatandosi al suo esterno, celebrando così l’avvio dell’età industriale anche in Italia. Boccioni non solo ritrae la città, ma guardandola da lontano, analizza anche l’umanità delle persone che la popolano e che sembrano così piccole e insignificanti nella corsa all’industrializzazione, ma a cui invece il pittore, proprio attraverso questa distanza, dà una voce e un’umanità. all’inizio del Novecento e che tormentano l’artista in questo periodo, è dimostrata dai dettagli e dal taglio prospettico estremamente sicuro che cristallizza nella luce la costruzione sulla destra del dipinto.

Boccioni in quest’opera usa ancora la tecnica divisionista, ma è già arrivato in un certo senso a una conclusione che precede la nuova ricerca e fase dell’artista evidente ne La città che sale.

Studio per ‘La città che sale’ (pp. 66-67, dettaglio p. 49), 1910, come recita il titolo, è uno studio preparatorio per il grande capolavoro conservato al Museum of Modern Art di New York che Umberto Boccioni dipinse tra 1910 e 1911, in un momento di cruciale importanza per la definizione del linguaggio futurista e di cui esistono vari disegni preparatori e bozzetti. La fase preparatoria de La città che sale – così come la sua iconografia e il suo essere punto di snodo tra tecnica divisionista, cultura simbolista e nascente poetica futurista – è stata ripetutamente oggetto di discussione da parte degli studiosi e diversi sono stati, fino a oggi, i tentativi di ricostruire il percorso che Boccioni seguì tra l’estate del 1910 e il marzo del 1911, quando egli finalmente arrivò a completare l’opera. Questo studio non è però un bozzetto veloce, ma documenta una cura nel modulare la luce e il colore dopo aver definito la composizione fin nei dettagli e un processo di sviluppo dal Divisionismo attraverso la compilazione del Manifesto tecnico della pittura futurista. Nonostante il formato ridotto, infatti, in questo studio si trovano pressoché tutti gli elementi che sarebbero andati a comporre il dipinto definitivo: le figure in primo piano, impegnate ad arginare il moto dei cavalli; gli animali, che sul primo e secondo piano ingombrano la scena descritta da piccolissime pennellate di colore puro, che rendono perfettamente l’atmosfera concitata della città in pieno sviluppo. Nonostante l’astrazione raggiunta, come proposto dal manifesto in cui dichiarava che “il moto e la luce distruggono la materialità dei corpi”, si distinguono facilmente molti elementi: il ponte, la locomotiva blu che esce fuori da una delle arcate sbuffando il suo fumo azzurro nell’aria e il grande edificio in costruzione.
