Si potrebbe guardare a casa Ceschi, disegnata dallo studio vicentino traverso-vighy, come al classico esempio di buona architettura italiana applicata al tema “tradizionale” del progetto contemporaneo all’interno di preesistenze ambientali. E in parte è proprio così. Il corpo di fabbrica esistente è stato “ascoltato” con attenzione e intelligenza: recuperato con tecniche tradizionali nelle sue mura originali, i segni del nuovo intervento su strada sono appena percettibili grazie ad un disegno asciutto ed elegante dei serramenti esterni che giocano con il filo raso parete al piano terra, e con un arretramento significativo nelle bucature alte che lascia intuire la metamorfosi avvenuta; mentre all’interno il progetto si sviluppa seguendo una linea autonoma con una struttura auto-portante in legno lamellare che costruisce la nuova identità della casa, le sue relazioni pieni-vuoti, le gerarchie e una relazione sofisticata e consapevole con le luci (naturale e artificiale). Ne deriva uno spazio caldo, domestico, asciutto, quasi montano nella sua voluta austerità e schiettezza nei dettagli ridotti al minimo essenziale.

One may look at the Ceschi house, designed by the traversovighy firm from Vicenza, as a classical example of good Italian architecture applied to the “traditional” theme of contemporary design inserted in an environment with existing, older buildings.

And this is to some extent really the case. The architects have “listened” to the existing building carefully and intelligently: its original walls have been renovated with traditional techniques, and the signs of the new additions on the side facing the street can only just be inferred due to the minimal and elegant design of the outer casing that plays with the line flush with the wall on the ground floor and with the pronounced recession of the upper windows, that allow one to perceive the metamorphosis that has taken place. The interior is on the other hand designed as an autonomous entity, with a self-supporting structure in laminated wood which constructs the new identity of the house, its relationships between masses and empty spaces, the hierarchies and a sophisticated and conscious relationship with the illumination (natural and artificial). The result is a warm, domestic, minimal interior that almost reminds of mountain

Casa Ceschi si trova nel centro storico della città di Vicenza e proprio con le peculiarità del luogo tenta di stabilire un legame, oltre che un equilibrio sia formale che strutturale.

La sua posizione, che la addossa all’antica cinta muraria della città, ha imposto un intervento particolarmente attento, che mette in relazione la necessità di preservare l’involucro storico, fortemente legato al tessuto urbano, con quella di riadattare gli ambienti interni in modo funzionale.

Gli scavi sotterranei hanno portato alla luce altre porzioni di cinta muraria risalenti al XII secolo, rendendo l’intervento più complesso ed affascinante.

Ogni progetto intrapreso dallo studio si pone prima di tutto l’obiettivo di incidere sugli ambienti in cui si inserisce nel modo più leggero possibile, che si trovino in un contesto paesaggistico o che l’ambiente da salvaguardare sia, come in questo caso, quello architettonico. Da questa filosofia derivano degli interventi progettati al dettaglio, spesso costituiti da elementi montati fuori opera, oggetti architettonici in grado di mantenere una forte indipendenza 14

Ceschi house is located in the old town of Vicenza, and it is precisely with the peculiarity of the place that it seeks to establish a bond, as well as a both formal and structural equilibrium. Its position by the ancient town walls has called for a particularly attentive design, where the need to preserve the historical outer shell with its close ties to the urban tissue has been related to the necessity of readapting the interior in a functional key.

The excavations in the basement have brought to light other parts of the town walls, dating from the XII Century, making the project more complex and fascinating.

Every time we face a new architectural challenge we try to thread as lightly as possible, to create as little disturbance as possible in the environment we are working with, whether the latter is an environmental or, as in this case, an architectural one. The result of this philosophy is projects where every detail has been carefully planned, and where many parts consist of pre-assembled elements, architectural objects capable of maintaining a marked structural independence, and that at the

Il progetto di illuminazione, pensato per abbassare i consumi e sfruttare la luce naturale, si fa in questa zona particolarmente attento, sia per far arrivare la luce esterna fino al piano cieco, sia per valorizzare le superfici irregolari delle mura che ne segnano il perimetro.

The lighting design, ideated in order to reduce consumption and exploit the natural light, has been particularly attentive in this area, both to make the daylight reach the floor without windows and to enhance the irregular surfaces of the outer walls.

Ad inserirsi nelle pareti svuotate di casa Ceschi è una nuova struttura, uno scheletro di legno lamellare di larice che si sviluppa su tutta l’altezza dell’edificio, definendone la distribuzione e instaurando con il contenitore un rapporto collaborativo dalle alte prestazioni antisismiche. a new structure has been inserted within the gutted walls of Ceschi HOUSE; a skeleton in laminated larch wood which reaches the full height of the building, defining its distribution and establishing a collaborative relationship with the container characterized by an outstanding anti-seismic performance.

La copertura rielabora la pratica costruttiva tradizionale, ridisegnando delle tavelle in cotto di 60x30x3,5 cm, posate su un’orditura mista di acciaio e legno. Il pacchetto isolante di copertura utilizza pannelli di canapa cosÏ come il rivestimento interno delle pareti storiche preesistenti. the roof revises the traditional building practice, redesigning the terracotta tiles of 60x30x3,5 cm dimensions, laid on the mixed warping of steel and wood.

The insulating package on the cover uses hemp panels as the inner facing of the existing historic walls.

Ogni portale è composto da segmenti accoppiati di travi e pilastri di legno lamellare di larice, tenuti insieme da piastre metalliche, barre filettate e dadi ciechi. La scelta dei materiali e lo schema di assemblaggio offrono, oltre all’efficienza strutturale, anche un’ottima prestazione antisismica.

Each portal is made by coupled segments of beams and columns of laminated larch wood, held together by metal plates, threaded rods and cap nuts. materials choice and assembly diagram offer, as well as structural efficiency, an excellent performance even in case of earthquakes.

Giovanni Traverso (Bolzano, 1969) e Paola Vighy (Vicenza 1969) si laureano nel 1994 presso lo IUAV di Venezia con tesi: “Luce e Architettura: un piccolo padiglione per la Biennale di Venezia”, relatori Arrigo Rudi e Marina Vio. Da subito indirizzano il loro interesse verso il lighting design perfezionando i loro studi presso The Bartlett University College of London con un Master of Science in Architecture “Light and Lighting”. Nel 1996, sviluppando le relazioni tra luce e architettura, fondano a Vicenza lo studio traversovighy. I loro progetti seguono un percorso coerente che porta alla realizzazione di edifici leggeri, basati su sperimentazione, prefabbricazione ed economia di risorse, collaborando con la produzione artigianale locale e cercando di stabilire un equilibrio tra sapienza tradizionale e ottimizzazione tecnologica. Questo processo progettuale porta a stabilire uno stretto legame con il contesto pur mantenendo una forte identità ed indipendenza formale. Negli ultimi anni l’attenzione per il territorio si è trasformata in un vero impegno progettuale, volto all’impiego di tecnologie sostenibili: ne è esempio il lavoro svolto per la stessa casa Ceschi e il nuovo edificio ad energia zero in fase di progettazione tra le colline della provincia vicentina che diventerà nuova sede dello Studio.

Anche nel campo del disegno della luce lo studio mantiene uno sguardo attento rispetto alle tematiche della sostenibilità e cerca di stabilire un rapporto equilibrato tra luce naturale ed artificiale, conscio dell’importanza dell’illuminazione nei ritmi vitali dettati da cicli stagionali e circadiani.

Varie ricerche sviluppate dallo studio si sono occupate in maniera approfondita di queste tematiche producendo progetti di illuminazione come quello polimorfico pensato per i bar e coffee shop Illy o il sistema di controllo della luce naturale per la sede Salvagnini di Sarego (VI). Tra i loro principali incarichi professionali il Salvagnini Technical Center ad Izumi, Giappone (2004), la nuova sede aziendale Spidi Sport a Sarego, del 2006, il sistema di illuminazione per la cappella Bacci nella basilica di S. Francesco ad Arezzo e la nuova area commerciale dell’Aeroporto Falcone-Borsellino a Palermo.

I loro lavori sono stati recentemente raccolti nel volume edito da Umberto Allemandi “Space made light, Traverso-Vighy 1994-2009”. Giovanni Traverso è Sustainability director per PLDA (Professional Lighting Design Association) e docente a contratto nel Master di Lighting Design dello IUAV, presso ISAI e VIA (Vicenza Institute of Architecture - University of Florida).

Giovanni Traverso (Bolzano, 1969) and Paola Vighy (Vicenza 1969) graduated from IUAV of Venice in 1994, presenting dissertations on “Light and Architecture: a small pavilion for the Venice Biennial” with Arrigo Rudi and Marina Vio as advisors.

They immediately focused on lighting design, completing their studies at The Bartlett University College of London with a Master of Science in Architecture “Light and Lighting”. In 1996, developing the interaction between light and architecture, they founded the traversovighy firm in Vicenza. Their projects develop along a coherent trajectory that leads to the creation of light buildings based on experimentation, prefabrication and a sparing use of resources; they cooperate with local craftsmen and try to find an equilibrium between traditional knowledge and technological optimization. This design process leads to the creation of close ties with the context, without thereby renouncing a strong identity and formal independence. In recent years the attention to the local territory has turned into a true design commitment, aimed at the use of sustainable technologies, as witnessed by the work on the Ceschi house and the new zero-energy building they are currently planning, which will stand among the hills in the province of

Vicenza, and become the new head office of the firm. The firm continues to keep abreast on developments in the lighting design sector, keeping an attentive eye on sustainability issues and seeking to maintain a balanced relationship between natural and artificial light, conscious of the importance of illumination in the life rhythms determined by seasonal and circadian cycles. Various research projects conducted by the firm have studied these issues in depth, and have produced lighting projects as the polymorphic design ideated for the bars and coffee shops of Illy or the daylight regulation system for the Salvagnini headquarters in Sarego (VI). Their most important assignments comprise the Salvagnini Technical Center in Izumi – Japan (2004), the new corporate headquarters of Spidi Sport in Sarego, realized in 2006, the lighting system for the Bacci chapel in the basilica of S. Francesco in Arezzo and the new shopping area of the Falcone-Borsellino airport in Palermo. Their works have recently been presented in the volume “Space made light, Traverso-Vighy 19942009”.
