Understand the application of a drop hammer In all kinds of drop forgings, powder hammer or drop hammer plays a vital role in the process. The drop hammers used are typically a mechanical process where the upper die and the weight are uplifted first with the help of a belt or chain and then dropped. This is why the forging process is called drop forging. If the two metal bars used in the process are heavy and meant for a heavier forged product, then power hammers are uplifted hydraulics. Drop forging process In the drop forgings, the forging die has two parts – the upper part and the lower part. The upper part of the die is onto the ram that can move up and down while the lower part of the die is fixed at a position on the anvil. The material is at first heated to the targeted temperature and placed in the lower part of the forging die. The material is then constantly hammered until the material fills the die cavity. Two types of drop forgings are used – open-die forging and closed-die forging. All types of metals that can be given a specific shape by heating are used in the drop forging process. As such, steel, magnesium, stainless steel, and aluminum are used in this process of forging while the use of aluminum is the maximum die to its price and various advantages.
