Welcome This is the very first edition of the brand new e-bulletin produced by your local Cheshire West & Chester Alzheimer’s Society team. We really hope you like it!

We plan to send out a new e-bulletin four times a year and will email each one out to you so ---- if you change your email address ---- don’t forget to let us know! Feel free to print out a copy if that is easier to read or if you want to share it with anybody you know.

You may know that we have had a bit of a change-around in the Cheshire West and Chester team so, on the next page, you will see some new (and old!) faces and learn a little about us all.

In future issues we are also going to take a look at the various activity groups and see how we can make them even better for you. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let us know ---- we would love to hear from you. You can email us directly at westcheshire@alzheimers.org.uk or ring the office (our phone number is shown below) or have a chat with us at one of the groups.

You will also notice that, at the back of the e-bulletin, there are two calendar pages, showing all the groups and activities for the next two months. If you print those pages you pin them up on the wall or put them on your fridge to use as a useful calendar and add your own appointments. We hope you find that really useful ---- we wouldn’t want you to miss anything. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy this very first edition of ‘ForgetMeNote’!

Meet Your Team As you may know, 2015 saw a few changes to the way your Cheshire West & Chester team is organised, with a move of the Chester Office to Curzon House. We also said a sad farewell to some dedicated team members and the arrival of some new faces. In this section you can meet the team and find out a little bit about their backgrounds. The one thing that we can all guarantee is that we will continue to support you in whatever way we can!

Jane Spruce Services Manager My passion to get involved with Alzheimer's Society began when my father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease over 4 years ago. At the time I knew very little about the disease so I therefore made it my mission to learn more about dementia. I completed my City & Guilds Diploma in Dementia in February 2015.

Due to my personal circumstances and my overwhelming desire to help and support people affected by dementia I decided to change my career and to get involved in helping to promote an awareness of dementia. I therefore initially joined the Alzheimer's Society as a volunteer on the Information Stand at the Countess of Chester Hospital. After that I became the Dementia Action Alliance Coordinator for Cheshire East, where I worked relentlessly promoting and encouraging companies and organisations to support the local community to become more dementia friendly. I was appointed as the Services Manager for Cheshire West & Chester in November 2015 and I am thoroughly enjoying my role and working hard with my team to improve our local services for people who are affected by dementia.

Carol Levis Dementia Support Manager As Dementia Support Manager, I have a varied role within the Society. I help support people affected by dementia to gain knowledge and information or to access services. I also support the team, perhaps by covering one of our popular activity groups if they are off. At times I will attend events such as information days where I will man an information stand or meet with other organisations to exchange information or ideas. The Alzheimer’s Society is often invited to social groups to give a talk so I may be asked to do that as well.

Julie Bardell Dementia Support Worker I became a volunteer in the Society in 2010 as a member of the campaigns team, having had personal experience of dementia with my own father, and then went on to assist at the Whitby Group and helped set up the Countess of Chester Hospital information desk. I joined the society staff as a Dementia Support Worker in April 2012. I'm still an active e-campaigner and I'm still passionate about dementia care!

Forget Me Note 2

Jenny Monk Dementia Advisor I have worked for the Alzheimer’s Society for eight years. I have a background in Citizens Advice Bureau work and management and as a qualified counsellor. I work as a Dementia Adviser and I was formerly a Dementia Support Worker. I also lead the Alzheimer’s Society Walking Group which meets once a month. My role is all about helping people to live positively with dementia.

Gill Poole Dementia Support Worker I have been in post for seven years this month. My role in the Society is to support and provide information to carers, people with dementia and their extended families and friends. I also facilitate a local Dementia Café and provide Dementia awareness at various settings. I have personal experience of Dementia in my family. My career background originates from a General Nurse qualification followed by Registered Mental Health Nurse. I mainly worked in the acute setting but towards the end of my nursing career I worked on a Dementia Specialized unit on the Wirral. I am married and live locally and have a grown up family, which includes two grandchildren who keep me very busy. I am very interested in travelling at home and abroad and I like to take the opportunity to hike as much as possible.

Amy Robinson Peer Support Group Facilitator I started working for the Society in November 2015 and have a split role; half in West Cheshire & Chester as a Peer group Facilitator and half in the Wirral as a Dementia Support Worker. Whilst studying law at university I began volunteering with Age UK where I met the manager of a local residential care home, who introduced me to her line of work and I began work in the EMI unit of the home, gaining a real passion for working with people with dementia and learning about the illness. I finished my time at University but knew I wanted to continue in this line of work. I have since worked as a Senior Care Assistant in a residential home and as a Field Care Supervisor for a community care company. My Grandad was diagnosed with mixed Dementia in 2011 and my family and I found invaluable support through the Alzheimer's Society's website. My parents and I cared for him for a number of years so I have personal experience of how the illness can affect families. I live with my partner Darren and our two beautiful children, Evie (3) and Ella (1), who keep me extremely busy when I'm not at work!

Jane Stubbs Dementia Support Worker Hello! I’m Jane Stubbs and I have been a Dementia Support Worker based in Northwich since May 2012. I previously worked as Assistant Head of Learning Support in a secondary school for twelve years but the desire for a career change and also my personal experience of dementia led me to the Alzheimer’s Society. I enjoy my role and find it very rewarding to be able to give people the help they need. On a personal note I am married to Rob and have three children, Tom and twins, Lucy and Edward and outside of work I enjoy travelling and running the Guide group in my village.

Rosaleen Winterburn Winterb urn Dementia Support Worker I started with Alzheimer’s Society as Volunteering Officer for Cheshire & St Helen’s in November 2010, and during this time I managed to meet most of the volunteers and staff across the locality. Since October 2014 I have been the Befriending Manager for Cheshire West & Chester area.

Gill Yates Dementia Support Worker and Service Administrator I have worked for Alzheimer’s Society for four and a half years. I am the Service Administrator for the whole of Cheshire West and Chester and also currently Dementia Support Worker in the Vale Royal area covering some hours for Liz whilst she is on maternity leave with her gorgeous baby girl. My role is to ensure that all services are delivered as efficiently as possible by working behind the scenes completing all admin related tasks from booking venues and raising purchase orders to processing invoices. I am usually the initial point of contact for people telephoning or calling into the office and am responsible for processing all donations that are very generously sent to us. I am married to Dave and have two children, Madeline who is nine and Lucas who is six, so they keep me very busy when I am not in work!

What’s in a Name...?

Have you ever wondered what all those role titles actually mean? Wonder no more…

Services Manager The Service Manager manages and supports the delivery of services that meet the needs of people affected by dementia. They support all employees and volunteers of the Society in achieving its overall strategy and vision.

Dementia Support Manager Dementia Support Managers manage Dementia support workers to provide support to people with dementia or their carers.

Dementia Support Worker Dementia Support Workers provide support, information and guidance to people with dementia and their carers, helping to maintain their independence, improving their sense of well-being, and putting them in more control of their lives. They assist people with dementia and their carers to identify their needs and access to services.

Dementia Adviser Dementia Advisers work with people who are newly diagnosed, discussing with them the implications of their diagnosis in terms of how to respond to and understand the symptoms of dementia, claiming Attendance Allowance, Council Tax Discount, applying for Lasting Power of Attorney, joining our groups and becoming more aware of local services and activities.

Service Administrator The Service Administrator provides administrative support to the Cheshire West & Chester Team, including financial procedures and petty cash.

National Museums Liverpool: Liverpool: House of Memories House of Memories is an award-winning training programme, which targets the carers of people living with dementia. It provides participants with information about dementia and equips them with the practical skills and knowledge to facilitate a positive quality of life experience for people living with dementia.

House of Memories offers dementia awareness training for professionals, as well as buddy days for families, friends and volunteer carers. Dementia Friends Rob Catlow is an Alzheimer’s Society volunteer who delivers ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions.

Awareness Sessions As many readers will know, there is a national initiative aimed at raising awareness of dementia which has been running for something like two years so far. It's called Dementia Friends.

I am one of many hundreds of people who have been trained up to be what are rather grandly called ‘Dementia Friends Champions’, so that we can lead awareness sessions across the country.

The aim is to reach 4 million people by 2020, and at the time of writing (December 2015) the current total of people who have attended one of the sessions is just shy of 1.4 million.

I have so far delivered fifty such sessions, to a huge range of audiences, including: • Cheshire Constabulary • local Library staff • junior school children • 6th form students • care home staff • GP surgery staff • church groups • businesses and shops • and more…!

Although the session follows a set script, to ensure the main messages are covered, there is always the need to consider the perspectives of the different audiences, to keep it as relevant as possible. There are also specialised scripts for youngsters.

Champions A forum of Champions across the North of England has just been set up and I've been selected to be part of that group, with our first meeting scheduled to be held in Leeds in January 2016.

This will be a brilliant way in which we can share best practice, and maybe find ways of reaching as many different audiences as we can.

If any reader thinks the talk, which lasts about an hour (and involves no technology whatsoever!), would be of interest to any business, retail outlet, school, social group (like WI, for example), neighbourhood group etc. that they might have links with, please do get in touch with me (see below). I'm sure we can arrange something mutually convenient.

In Memory…

Jimmy Dowling’s wife, Maureen, lived with dementia and sadly passed away last year.

Here, Jimmy writes about his experience and how he and his family raised funds for the Society.

Six years ago my wife Maureen was diagnosed with Dementia.

It was awful news and at first life continued as normal. As her illness took hold I looked after her at home with the help of my whole family.

Each day passed and more and more of Maureen disappeared. At times she still had a sense of humour and she continued to make us laugh with her one liners and quick wit. She became very agitated all the time.

In July 2014 I found I had bowel cancer and I was forced to put Maureen into a nursing home. This was a horrible day and very upsetting. Thankfully I recovered well and I visited Maureen six days a week and took her out every afternoon.

In October 2015 Maureen became ill with pneumonia and she wasn't strong enough to recover and passed away peacefully on the 12th October.

Gill Poole from our local Alzheimer’s Society helped me and my children a lot during Maureen's illness and we decided to have any donations from Maureen’s funeral donated to the Cheshire West and Chester department of the Alzheimer’s Society. The donations totalled £750.

On Saturday 14th November my Daughter and Granddaughter organised a charity craft fair in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society. The event was very successfully and raised a further £820.

Coffee morning Local fund raiser, Susan Swain, has been having charity coffee mornings for the last fifteen years, inviting her many friends and family members.

The proceeds from the coffee mornings, which include raffles, cake and biscuits sales, have gone to many local charities.

Susan decided that, for her first coffee morning in 2016, the donations would be for her local Alzheimer's Society.

Gill Poole, Dementia Support Worker, gave a short awareness talk and enjoyed the fabulous company and the coffee and cake.

Amazingly ÂŁ195 was raised in a very short time. This donation will be spent very wisely for people with dementia and their Carers.

Creative Corner We all know that we are blessed with an amazing band of volunteers but did you know that they are a creative lot as well? Here are two pieces by one of those volunteers, Barbara Harrison, who had personal experience of caring for her husband with dementia.

Parallel Worlds He lives in a different world to mine.

He goes where I cannot follow.

He sees scenes I cannot view.

He speaks to people I cannot see.

He sees beyond my world to dimensions I cannot comprehend.

Can I be blamed for not understanding?

Can I know where his thoughts take him?

Can I be expected to read his mind?

Can I foresee the demons chasing him?

Can I know what ideas torment his struggling brain?

I try to put myself in his shoes but I can be logical; he cannot.

I can work things out; he cannot.

I can distinguish distortion from truth And tell when my judgement plays me false.

How would I cope with my loss of brain function After being so astute?

How would I deal with my muddled thoughts After being so orderly?

How would I communicate effectively When I cannot find the words?

How would I express my frustrations When I have been so able?

How would I make me understand When I don’t understand myself?

We live in parallel worlds.

Some days we never meet.

Other days we meet halfway, Coming back the other way.

There are Carers and then there are Carers Paid carers are a breed apart.

Some care from the heart.

Just a job for others.

Some are brisk and businesslike, Too busy to heed And unable to hear.

Some are bossy and directive Like their own way.

And are unwilling to listen.

Some are depressed and weighed down By their own difficulties.

And are too preoccupied.

Some are thoughtless, disrespectful, And unhelpful.

And do not see the need to change.

Some are grudging and vindictive, Wielding power And bullying covertly.

BUT Some are quietly competent, Caring and focussing On each individual.

Some are inspiring, Acknowledging difficulties, Yet making light of obstacles.

Some are enablers, Encouraging and positive, Motivating gently.

Some are intuitive, Knowing need before asked And doing willingly.

Some are gentle, Considerate and kind, Adding zest to life.

Forget M e Not Café Forget Me Not café is run by Sharon Dodds (RMN) and seeks through informal activities and discussions to explore the local community`s perceptions of dementia. The café seeks to support people living with dementia and those close to them.

Meets on the first Monday of the month at the Conservative Club, Main Street, Frodsham.

Our Services Support Groups If you are living with dementia and would like to meet and spend time with others affected by dementia, you will be welcomed at our Support Groups. Transport to groups can be arranged through our volunteer drivers - please contact the office for more information on 01606 781110.
