2010 T H E D E N V E R D AY S P T.1

Pete sells his car, puts his shit in boxes and flies to London to find work brewing. There, Pete writes to more breweries and this time with more success. He helps set-up London Fields Brewery.

Wanting to make the step from ameteur to pro brewer, Pete decides to move to Denver, a Mecca of brewing.

Before moving to Denver he writes to a load of breweries looking to hang out a day a week and learn in exchange for the offer of cleaning toilets but – alas! – none of them take him up.... But he continues to brew at home whilst working at Irish Bar Katie Mullins (where Larry the manager’s a prick!).

PUMPKIN PORTER WIN Pete knew he wanted to work at The Kernel or Camden Town breweries. So he set about to win their hearts (or better, a job!) with an offer of a home brewed batch of Pumpkin Porter from his garden in Dalston. It didn't win him a job at The Kernel BUT he did score a trial shift with Camden Town. They offer him a job, and this is where he meets James Garstang who was Head Brewer. At Camden Pete learns a lot, completes two brewing diplomas, and enrols in a BSc in Biochemistry.

HOPPING TO BELGIUM

Pete starts looking into how he can brew WORK on a larger scale but to set up his own plant he needed money… So instead he settles for brewing it on someone else's equipment. After scouring the UK he meets the Leroy family in Boezinge, Belgium via email. So Pete took 75 kg of American hops on the Eurostar and brews the first big batch of WORK. With his sidekick Cassie (the dog) he set about taking it round London pubs and almost sells out of the 6000L brew. He brews two more batches that year.

FOREST ROAD, E8 Pete leaves Camden Town and starts working as a consultant at Siren Craft Brew in Reading. Around a similar time he finds a room available at a house on Forest Road in Hackney. The house is inhabited by four pals who all went to school together: Pippo, Joss, Marcus and Freddie. Competition for the room was tough – but as Pete showed up with a case of beer and a promise to help them to brew at home – the token American from Boston is welcomed into the crew.

The Forest Road Brewing Co. Taproom & Bar opens with a taproom/ bar out front and the kegs in the back. Not long after Pete starts coming up with new recipes, most notably, POSH Lager.

WORK, WORK, WORK

Work is born!

Now with several solid years of brewing exerience under his belt, Pete starts brewing in the Forest Road garden on a trusty home brew kit. Forest Road Brewing is born... After the third batch the recipe was becoming a success, and was named WORK IPA. He took it to the Prince Arthur pub next door and it’s a hit with the locals. He starts thinking that it might be time for him to start doing his own thing!

GROWING THE TEAM Sarah Dobsen joins the Team as Production Manager. She quickly finds a new best friend in Cassie, the brewery dog.

Lewi Jones joins as a delivery driver – but by 2022 finds himself brewing with the team. Pete had stayed in touch with James Garstang – the Head Brewer who had hired him back at Camden Town Brewery. James had watched Pete's progress over the years, with Pete often trying to poach him to the Forest Road team. Eventually James came on board, even though they still had no brewery site of their own!

The kit is shipped from Santa Rosa (via the Panama canal) to Southampton. Pete flies out to watch it going through the Panama Canal with his dad. Documenting this with a photo seemed particularly important, as when he was viewing the kit back at Russian River, he'd seen a photo of the exact same kit sailing under The Golden Gate Bridge, on its original arrival from Germany. It arrives in the UK as the country goes into the first national Covid19 Lockdown! So it gets put into storage until they find the right site.

James finds the original Russian River (Santa Rosa, California) 6000 Litre brew kit on an auction site.

Pete guesses owner Vinnie Cilurzo’s email address and ends up flying out to see it. They make a formal offer and figure out the logistics of shipping it over to the UK, how much they need to raise to do it. Pete writes to everyone in his address book to ask for investment and manages to raise $175,000 in a day by a 5pm deadline!

FIX UP LOOK SHARP

Choosing to take on most of the installation work themselves, another 9 months passes getting the kit up and running.

While the work on the new brewery is going on in the background, the Forest Road team respond to the Lockdown by turning the tap room into an offy, building a web shop, and getting on Deliveroo. With the pubs closed and keg sales down, Pete decides to take the pints to the people. He renovates an old utility van into a beer dispensary, and makes bookable appointment slots available on the website.

Home Sweet Home!

After 9 months, sitting waiting at the docks, the brew kit finally arrives at its new home, Juno Way.

HOP ON At Forest Road, we’re all about the underdog.

When you visit our brewery, you might spot a picture of Bruce on the wall. Why is he there? Well, he’s the owner of Dinky’s Blue Belle Diner in Holden, Massachusetts, and when we needed investment in 2021, he chipped in.

With Forest Road, what you see is what you get. We don’t have big investors. We’re not owned by a multinational corporation. We started on a tiny kit in an East London backyard, and we’ve grown through hard work.

What we work hardest at is the quality of our beer. When we heard that one of the world’s greatest breweries – Russian River in Northern California – was selling its brewhouse, we knew we had to get our hands on it. We worked night and day to raise the cash, sailed it through the Panama Canal and now it has a new home, here in London.

We think you’ll agree it was worth the effort when you taste our beer.

BEER IS FOR EVERYONE. After a decade of craft beer disrupting the beer industry in the UK and globally, the beer drinker is more demanding and educated than ever.

We believe that this means we need to make things more simple, not more complicated.

We take pride in keeping things simple. However, achieving expertly balanced simplicity in our product is far from simple in practice.

We are OK with that. We work hard on our beer to make it easy.

Beer should not be about effort, or trying to “understand” it. Food and drink should be enjoyable, and naturally tasty to you. If it feels like a mental puzzle to be solved or a source of bewilderment as you struggle to “get it” then we think it’s not doing what it should be doing.

Beer should give endlessly and ask for nothing in return. That’s our work. We grind tirelessly to ensure our beer gets incrementally better every day. We don’t want it to flip flop and change on you. We won’t continually tweak the ingredients to experiment at your expense.

You have worked hard for the money you spend on our beer, so it is our duty to make sure it is tasty, solid, dependable and as welcome as a hug from a friend.

OUR UNIQUE HYBRID. AN IPA WITH BOTH HOP AND MALT CHARACTER Dark blonde appearance cues a burst of flavour from the first glimpse. Effervescent with a full, rententive foam.

Soft, plump, juicy orange blossom on aroma, doesn’t overwhelm with citrus/grapefruit the way that some IPAs can. Hop character is mellowed with a touch of caramel, just warmed toast, and dried stone fruits.

On the palate a big wave of initial flavour. Toasted malty notes hit first, then alcohol warmth and hop bitterness. Smooth, delicate carbonation.

Floral notes emerge on the linger.

Bitterness lingers on the tongue (rather than the throat) and subsides quickly, ready for the next sip.

OUR CLASSICALLY CRISP, EASY DRINKING LAGER Technically, you can only feel crispness or lightness when you taste something, but in POSH you can hear it.

The carbonation prickles and sings before the glass even reaches your mouth. Bright, barely blonde in appearance with light whipped foam.

On aroma, citrus and delicate leafy notes are underpinned by mild, fresh cereal.

On the palate, the first sip instantly coats the whole mouth in crisp and refreshing astringency, waking up every single part of the tongue.

The unmistakable flavour of hop bitterness, fresh grains, and puckering lemon dart and flicker over the tongue, then quickly dissipate, ready for the next refreshing sip.

OUR TRULY SESSIONABLE PALE ALE Bright yellow gold appearance with airy, whipped foam. Richly gold and bright with full, retentive foam.

Juicy, freshly scooped passion fruit aromas escape from the beer as soon as it hits the glass.

On the palate, tight, prickling carbonation hits the tongue, allowing the light passion fruit character to rise and develop in the mouth.

This is accentuated with an underlying sweetness and mild alcoholic warmth. Zesty lemon is the final flavour note, before finishing in a gentle dryness and crisp bitterness.

Unlike other IPAs RIDE’s bitterness doesn’t build from sip to sip, and sits on the tongue instead of in the throat, so it’s a truly sessionable Pale Ale

OUR FULL ON FLAVOURED CLASSIC AMERICAN IPA Bright yellow gold appearance with airy, whipped foam.

Zesty tangerine on the nose (like the good ones from M&S at peak season) which evolves into plump grapefruit.

On the palate, an energetic burst of orange citrus flavour makes its entrance and coats the tongue. Slight drying sensation flashes through the mouth before rounded bitterness kicks in.

Delicate carbonation makes the body smooth and easy, despite the higher ABV than the majority of IPAs. Gentle alcoholic warmth and mild tartness can be found in the linger, which tugs at the back of the jaw and waters the mouth like sherbet or fizzy sweets.

IF YOU’RE ANYTHING LIKE US, YOU MIGHT LIKE THE OCEAN. Since we like the ocean, like a lot, we work really hard to minimize our environmental footprint. It’s been a major part of our mission since we began We believe that this means we need to make things more simple, Our spent grain after a brew goes to a local pig farmer as feed named Darryl.

We recover every single bit of water that could have let off as steam or waste.

Every little thing about our cans are 100% recyclable and plastic-free.

The can shell, the lid, the label, and even the box that they come in.

Our entire keg-fleet is stainless steel – we reuse and refill them.

The pallet-wrap that we use is made from vegetables.

The only remaining single-use plastic we have left to replace is the keg caps that go to customers. While they are fully recyclable – we’re still working on replacing them too.

We just think it feels way better swimming in the ocean knowing that we’re not part of the problem.
