Forest Ridge is grounded in Sacred Heart and Catholic tradition, enriched by the 27 different faiths represented in our student body. Our Sacred Heart tradition anchors our community and connects us with 150 schools worldwide (25 of which are right here in the United States). Together, as the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, we are dedicated to the values of Christian education articulated nearly 200 years ago by the foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat.
We are still guided by the strong goals our founders set forth even as we evolve the way we educate our students today.
The Goals and Criteria outline the essential principles and values of Sacred Heart education. As a Sacred Heart school we educate to:
One of the most unique facets of attending a Sacred Heart school is that you are part of an international family and have opportunities to attend school anywhere in the United States or around the world. Our international exchange program allows students in 8th through 12th grade to immerse themselves in a new language and culture. In addition, living and learning in a new environment helps students develop critical personal skills. Opportunities are available to study abroad for as little as one week to an entire semester. Many students remember their Sacred Heart exchange as one of the highlights of their Forest Ridge experience and often make lifelong friends with their sisters from other schools.
A PERSONAL AND ACTIVE FAITH IN GOD A DEEP RESPECT FOR INTELLECTUAL VALUES
A SOCIAL AWARENESS WHICH IMPELS TO ACTION
THE BUILDING OF COMMUNITY AS A CHRISTIAN VALUE
PERSONAL GROWTH IN AN ATMOSPHERE OF WISE FREEDOM
Our community enjoys many rich traditions, steeped in the Sacred Heart experience. A few of the most beloved traditions include:
Convocation: Convocation is the opening ritual at Sacred Heart schools, during which each student, teacher and staff member are called individually by name. Recognizing that each person plays a vital role in the school community, school cannot officially begin until each member is called.
Congé: Congé is a surprise day when classes are replaced with a day of fun. Congés occur unexpectedly, with all the planning done in secret. Originally, the activities and games were planned by the Religious Sisters for the girls of the boarding schools. The tradition has carried over to the schools of today and provides the older students an opportunity to exercise leadership skills as they plan activities for the entire school.
Ring Ceremony: Held each May, the beloved Ring Ceremony is one of the most cherished traditions of the year. During this ceremony, juniors are presented with their school rings by their senior. The name of the junior called by each senior is a closely-held secret until the moment of the ceremony. It is a longstanding tradition that juniors wear their rings with the Sacred Heart facing inwards, symbolizing their time at Forest Ridge receiving the love of the Sacred Heart. During Ring Ceremony, seniors turn their rings outward, symbolizing that they are stepping out to share that love with the world.
Forest Ridge educates all students to the highest academic standards, while challenging students intellectually through a curriculum that values curiosity, inquiry and investigation. In order to educate students who are ready to meet the ever changing needs of our world, we commit ourselves to the following program pillars.
Forest Ridge teaches our students not what to think–but how. As a Sacred Heart School, Goal Two calls us to educate to a deep respect for intellectual values. Inspiring curiosity and joy through a curricular program that empowers our students to explore new intellectual horizons, delve deep into their academic interests, and take ownership of their learning, our students gain an understanding of themselves and their place in the world.
Our girl-centered learning environment fosters inquiry-driven and independent research, providing student choice, which ultimately cultivates an authentic love of learning in our students. Through their learning, our students develop the sense of purpose needed to make a positive impact on their world.
Relationships are central to learning at Forest Ridge. Whether student to student, one course to another, or classroom to their outside world–education at Forest Ridge is interconnected.
Our multidisciplinary curriculum, rich with integrated and collaborative learning opportunities, pushes our students to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of cross- and extra-curricular ways. Through service learning, our students step out of the classroom and into the community, gain awareness and compassion for others and their circumstances and foster a true sense of reciprocity in service. The international Network of Sacred Heart Schools, made up of over 150 schools, provides our students with the opportunity to attend school anywhere in the United States or around the globe, introducing them to a variety of perspectives as they experience the interconnectedness of the world firsthand.
Girls learn best when their learning is relevant to their interests and their world. Through a collaborative, hands-on approach, our students take an active role in their learning, applying academic concepts to real-world experiences. Students are engaged intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically, as they investigate areas of interests and passions. Putting the theoretical into practice, students are able to apply what they’re learning to make a tangible difference. Experiential learning at Forest Ridge, comes to life through our signature programming, promotes the cultivation of confidence, competence, and courage, spurring our students to become change-makers in an ever-evolving world.
Cultivate the wish to learn, rather than the wish to be taught...If we wait to be taught, we shall never learn.
Spring Immersives: Spring Immersives are a one-week course during which students take one integrated, academic class which covers topics not traditionally explored in the middle and upper school curriculum. Interim courses include experiential learning opportunities such as week-long immersion trips, field trips, service-learning experiences and labs. Sample interim courses include: Conservation in Focus: Lopez Island & the Salish Sea; mural design; and the Science of Escape Rooms.
Advanced Integrated Studies: Advanced Integrated Studies (AIS) is an senior capstone project that provides students the opportunity to explore a topic of interest beyond the classroom. AIS is an interdisciplinary, selfdirected experience that requires an extended process of inquiry and is designed to encourage students to think critically and creatively. Recent AIS projects include: Sustainability: Climate Change and Water Scarcity; Financial Implications of Malware Attacks; and The Psychology of Color.
Endorsement Pathways: The Forest Ridge Endorsement Pathway Program provides our upper school students with the opportunity to deepen their learning in a specialized area of interest, differentiating themselves from their peers. Each Endorsement Pathway consists of a series of contentrelated courses and learning experiences that provide students with in-depth knowledge and exploration in one of the three areas: Global Citizenship, The Arts and STEM.

At Forest Ridge, we empower girls to push their own limits and lead from the heart. Our curriculum and programs prepare students to be brave, resilient leaders who are fully equipped with the cultural competencies necessary to engage meaningfully as compassionate citizens.
Rooted in the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria, the student experience at Forest Ridge focuses on the holistic development of each student, preparing her mind, body and will. In the classroom, students are pushed academically, while learning to value feedback as opportunities for growth and deeper learning. Through campus ministry retreats and religious studies courses, students embark on a path of discernment and realize their full potential as socially aware, empathetic thinkers.
Leadership at Forest Ridge takes many forms. Whether a student is leading on ASB, while playing on the soccer field or organizing a new school club, students learn important leadership skills that will follow them throughout their lives. In grades five and six, all students participate in leadership labs, learning the foundational concepts of leadership. These experiential and exploratory classes are designed to provide opportunities to practice and experiment with specific leadership skills and discover themselves as leaders in a feedback-rich environment.
Girls’ schools empower students to be bold leaders. 93% of girls’ school grads say they were offered greater leadership opportunities than peers at coed schools and 80% have held leadership positions since graduating from high school.

A Sacred Heart education is incredibly powerful because of the commitment to the holistic development of each student.
There’s no doubt that Sacred Heart schools are academically rigorous institutions. But above that, we also have a deep commitment to fostering the social, emotional and spiritual development of our students so that when they graduate they are able to succeed in this ever-changing world.

Forest Ridge graduates demonstrate the curiosity necessary to boldly face the unknown. We know that our students face a future that is certain to be complex and competitive, and our programming, both in and out of the classroom, helps students develop the inner strength to follow their own convictions and be the very best version of themselves, no matter the odds.
Athletics: Students can choose from eight sports across three seasons, including volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, tennis and golf. From beginner to elite, our no-cut athletics policy ensures every athlete can participate no matter her level of experience.
Performing Arts: Our drama program puts on four high-quality, all-girl productions each year. Our high-school choir program includes a Glee choir and a select Chamber Choir that tours internationally. Our handbell program has a beginner choir and an advanced ensemble.
Experiential Trips: All middle-school students participate in a multi-day, Northwest overnight experience with their grade, designed to enhance curriculum, practice previously-learned leadership skills and build upon their social and emotional skill sets. While building class community, students gain practical knowledge about themselves, their environment and their ability to make a positive difference for the Earth and its people.
Clubs: Each year girls in the high school take the lead and create fun and exciting new clubs based on common interests. In the middle school, clubs are led by teachers, but are based on current student interests.
Community Service: One of the essential goals of a Sacred Heart education is to graduate girls who are “educated to a social awareness which impels to action.” This entails a significant emphasis on service learning throughout a girl’s experience at Forest Ridge. Through these opportunities, Forest Ridge hopes to foster empathy, promote civic engagement, teach the skills of building community and instill a willingness to step out of one’s comfort zone to learn across all manner of perceived boundaries.
The extracurricular program at Forest Ridge is designed to work in tandem with the academic program. Offerings are designed to empower our students to cultivate their talents, find their purpose and explore interests outside the classroom. Forest Ridge provides a wide range of opportunities, including athletics, outdoor exploration, STEAM, theater, dance and performing arts.
As a college preparatory school, the entire Forest Ridge community works together to provide our students with the skills and experience they need to find success in college and beyond. Our exceptional Director of College Counseling offers highly individualized coaching and support, as well as unlimited hours of guidance, to each high school student during her college search.
Throughout the college counseling process, our Director of College Counseling focuses on the whole student – her strengths, both in and out of the classroom, and her long-term goals and ambitions in college and beyond – to find the right-fit college for each graduate. For some students that right-fit college is a large, nationally recognized research institution across the country and for others it is a smaller, liberal arts college closer to home. While the Forest Ridge college matriculation list is diverse and varied, one constant remains – the impact of a Forest Ridge education is felt far beyond college.
We know that every college decision is unique and personal. To find the right fit college, juniors and seniors receive individual and group coaching, participate in college application workshops and our College 101 workshop series and visit with admission officers from more than 100 college and universities each year.
Our curriculum isn’t just interdisciplinary, it’s integrating multiple ways of thinking and doing. The more students can see how subjects are intertwined, the better we are preparing them for what the world looks like now and will look like in the future. Of course we want our girls to get into their top choice colleges, but we also want them to flourish in college. We don’t want them to just be able to get jobs, we want them to be the changemakers that the world needs.
Being a part of our residential program means you are joining a family. With 26 boarding students from all around the world, our five-day and sevenday boarding students develop the skills that allow them to enhance their cultural competency, global fulency, social responsibility, leadership and independence. Our small size, thoughtfully crafted program and focus on the individual provides an environment where each student is seen, known and loved in full expression of the Sacred Heart mission.
