Fostering Healthy Balance & Academic Rigor.
Forest Ridge provides an academic environment characterized by high expectations and equally high levels of support. Our rigorous academic program challenges students with a demanding curriculum that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and intellectual growth.
Our experiential learning approach brings education to life through hands-on projects, realworld problem-solving, and community partnerships, empowering students to apply their learning in meaningful, practical contexts.
Middle School Curriculum
Our middle school program is grounded in rigorous academics that form a solid foundation in both content knowledge and academic skills. Through intentional learning experiences informed by the research of the Association for Middle Level Education, students grow their skills to be deep learners and authentic leaders who:
• Actively seek challenges in a variety of subjects and settings outside the classroom, doing so with confidence.
• Listen with openness.
• Communicate clearly.
• Support the success of others while practicing personal well-being.
During these critical adolescent years, the middle school program provides experiences that foster critical-thinking skills, and builds the resilience needed for students to meet the rigor and demands of the upper school.
Our middle school curriculum uniquely offers:
• Rigorous, hands-on lab science courses all four years of middle school that connect directly with our outdoor education experiences as well as our innovative Tech Maker curriculum.
• Math classes at least one grade level above their assigned grade, with options for students to accelerate through three years of upper school math courses by the conclusion of their 8th grade year.
• Access to international language classes for all four years to build global citizen competency.
• Intentional opportunities for students to develop their identity and voice in all classes.
Upper School Curriculum
Forest Ridge’s upper school curriculum is a dynamic blend of rigorous core academic subjects and innovative multi-disciplinary classes, aimed at developing the skills necessary for students to be successful in college, and more importantly, life beyond. Students engage deeply with challenging courses in mathematics, science, literature, social studies, international language, religion, and the arts, ensuring they develop deep critical thinking and analytical skills. Complementing this robust academic framework are multi-disciplinary classes that aim to push students to draw connections across different fields of study and apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of cross-curricular ways.
The MOD Schedule
The upper school MOD Schedule is an innovative, research-backed schedule that divides the academic year into 6 MODs, each lasting 28-30 academic days. During each MOD, students take 3.5 classes, which gives students more time for deep, ambitious learning, a better opportunity to retain what they’ve learned, and tangible ways to transfer the critical skills they’re developing. With fewer, yet longer, classes, breaks between periods, and time to explore other areas of interest, our MOD schedule allows girls to more fully grapple with the curriculum and enhance their skills while encouraging a more balanced lifestyle – with space to pursue their passions.
Scan here for more information on the MOD Schedule.
Learn by Doing.
Students learn best when their courses of study are relevant and connected to the real world. Through a collaborative, hands-on approach to education both in and out of the classroom, our students take an active role in their learning, applying academic concepts to real-world experiences. Putting theory into practice, we engage our students’ curiosity, enhance their critical thinking and problemsolving skills, and support their creativity, making learning more meaningful and relevant, ultimately deepening our students’ understanding and retention.
Immersive Week
A dedicated week where students engage in hands-on, experiential learning activities that extend beyond the traditional classroom. Immersive courses include opportunities such as week-long immersion trips, local field trips, service-learning experiences, and interdisciplinary projects. This week-long event allows students to explore new interests, develop practical skills, and deepen their learning through real-world experiences.
Sacred Heart Exchange
One unique benefit of a Sacred Heart education is the opportunity to participate in a reciprocal cultural exchange with a student from another Sacred Heart school. With over 150 Sacred Heart schools located in nearly 40 countries, our students are given the opportunity to step outside of their comfort zones, immerse themselves in another culture, build their confidence, grow their independence, and refine their language skills, all within the embrace of a mission-aligned international network of schools.
Middle School Camp
Each year, middle school students participate in a multi-day, overnight outdoor camp experience designed to enhance their classroom learning, provide real-world leadership skills, and build upon their social and emotional skillsets. While building community, students gain practical knowledge about themselves, their environment, and their ability to make a positive difference for the needs of the Earth and its people.
“Experiential learning aligns seamlessly with our commitment to educate to a deep respect for intellectual values. When coupled with a strong core curriculum, experiential learning enhances our students’ educational journeys by empowering them to apply their knowledge and skills in meaningful and relevant ways outside of their classroom.” —
Mary Rose Guerin, Head of School
Uncovering Purpose.
“AIS allowed me to dive deep into a topic of interest- pediatric mental health, exploring how childhood trauma affects adult behavior. I knew that I was interested in mental health and was considering an occupation within that field, but completing my AIS project helped me confirm my aspirations to work within pediatric mental health in the future.” — Lilly ’24
Forest Ridge’s academic program provides opportunities for students to discover who they are and what most inspires them. Through a learning environment that provides student choice and fosters inquiry-driven and independent research, students are empowered to explore new intellectual horizons, delve deep into their academic interests, take ownership of their own growth, and ultimately develop a lifelong love of learning.
Advanced Integrated Seminar
Advanced Integrated Seminar (AIS), a senior capstone project, provides students the opportunity to independently explore a topic of interest beyond the classroom. As an interdisciplinary, self-directed experience, AIS requires an extended process of inquiry and is designed to encourage students to research effectively, think critically, and creatively present their findings to an audience of educators and peers.
Recent AIS projects include: The Secret Life of Bacteria: Treating Bacterial Infections without Contributing to Antibiotic Resistance; The Experience of Unhoused Women; Dirt on the Brain: The Benefits of Gardening for School-Aged Children; and Music and Mental Health: A Look at Mental Health and Management Techniques in the Classical Music Industry.
Endorsement Pathways
The Forest Ridge Endorsement Pathways is a structured academic path that allows students to focus their studies on a particular area of academic interest. Each endorsement consists of a series of required courses and academic experiences designed to develop specific skills and knowledge in one of the following categories: Global Leadership, The Arts, or STEM. To earn an endorsement upon graduation, students must engage in activities that display their knowledge of content, leadership in a related field, and service to a relevant cause. They present their learnings in a final portfolio.

Middle School Global Days
During Global Days, a 3-day long experience, middle school students pause traditional classes to explore a topic with global implications. Students spend Global Days learning in cross-grade level “family groups,” applying their newly acquired knowledge as they participate in service learning related to the year’s theme.
Support for all Students.
Forest Ridge strives to provide a balanced level of support to all students that encourages them to find success while continuing to nurture personal growth. We believe students grow in courage and confidence as they discover new abilities, learn from mistakes, cultivate strengths, develop empathy, and exercise resilience in meeting challenges and therefore aim to create student-led learning environments and supports that foster these experiences.
Learning Support Services
Our accommodations-based program supports students with disabilities who qualify under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Accommodations at Forest Ridge provide access to our academic program but do not alter or modify curriculum nor do they change what a student is expected to master in the class content. Our learning support specialists seek to assist students to realize their potential in a comprehensively accessible environment that promotes self-awareness, self-motivation, and self-advocacy.
ELL Services
Forest Ridge welcomes students from around the world to immerse themselves in speaking, reading, writing, and learning in English. Our English Language Learners (ELL) program provides differing levels of support in each division during a student’s transition into our English-taught curriculum.
Guided Study
To support all middle school students in fully engaging with our rigorous curriculum, our schedule provides a daily 35-minute Guided Study Hall. During this time, students utilize our Learning Management System to view feedback and updates, review their school-provided planner with their advisor, work on assignments in a quiet environment, and check in with teachers when they need help.
Building Confidence, Discovering Voice.
Forest Ridge offers a comprehensive arts and athletics program that empowers students to explore their creativity, build confidence, and grow in resilience. With numerous opportunities for artistic expression and a variety of sports available year-round, every student is encouraged to participate and develop their talents in a no-cut, supportive, and inclusive environment.
The Arts
The fine and performing arts are an integral part of the Forest Ridge experience. Whether throwing on the wheel in pottery class, painting a self-portrait in Advanced Studio Art, singing at Benaroya Hall with the Chamber Choir, performing in the spring musical, choreographing an original performance for Dance Fest, or managing behind the scenes in stage crew, our arts program provides students the platform to express their creativity, explore their personal identity, grow in confidence, and practice resilience, ultimately empowering them to express themselves authentically and with conviction.
Athletics
Forest Ridge students can choose from a variety of sports across three seasons, including basketball, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and more. Whether you are an experienced athlete, new to a sport, or somewhere in between, the Forest Ridge Ravens have a place for you. Our no-cut policy assures every student the opportunity to be a member of a team.
Student Leadership
Forest Ridge believes that all girls are leaders. Whether they are leading on ASB, playing on the soccer field, or organizing a new school club, students learn important leadership skills that will follow them throughout their lives. We encourage every student to lead in some capacity during their time at Forest Ridge, stretching themselves to take an active role in our campus and community.
Clubs
Each year, students take the lead to create fun and exciting new clubs based on common interests. Clubs include: knitting club, environmental club, service club, women in STEM, student hiring interview committee, bookworm buddies, rock climbing, and many more.
A Culture of Belonging.
The Department of Faith and Justice anchors the work of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat’s vision of education by reimagining how the Sacred Heart is experienced in the PNW. We cultivate a culture of care that appreciates the diversity of our community by ensuring each student is seen, heard, and valued for all their intersectional identity markers. From celebrating interfaith holidays to being actively socially aware, our students are constantly sharpening their skills of resilience and dialogue.
Retreats
At Forest Ridge, retreats provide an opportunity for students to explore our Sacred Heart values, justice work, and their own spiritual beliefs. Middle School retreats tend to be one-day, while our Upper School retreat program offers off-campus, multi-day, overnight experiences at each grade level. During these retreats, students explore their values and belief systems through various forms of prayer, play, group activities, keynote speakers, and reflections.
Faith Celebrations
As a Catholic school serving families of all faiths, our vision of education supports each child in their spiritual exploration within their own faith tradition. As such, Forest Ridge celebrates all major Catholic feasts within the liturgical calendar, as well as feasts that commemorate the Sacred Heart and our patron saints. Additionally, we acknowledge and celebrate faith traditions across the globe, such as Eid al-Fitr, Navaratri, Diwali, Hannukah, Yom Kippur, and more.
Service Learning
Service is vital to the mission of Sacred Heart education. We partner with local non-profit organizations to support the most vulnerable in our communities by being an active agent of compassion and change. Students participate in service learning and reflect on their impact several times throughout the academic year.
Affinity Groups
Affinity groups are a cohesive group of students that share an identity marker with similar experiences and backgrounds. These groups are essential to the life and culture at Forest Ridge. Affinity groups meet every week and are led by elected upper school students who receive rigorous leadership training and are moderated by campus adults who receive culturally responsive professional development. Together, our affinity groups promote a social awareness that impels to action, build community with games and activities, and prepare whole-school heritage month assemblies.
Our affinity groups include:
• Black Student Union
• Latine Student Union
• Multi-Racial Student Union
• Asian American Pacific Islander Student Union
• International Student Union
• Queer Straight Alliance

Introducing three exceptional alumni who are making significant strides and demonstrating remarkable accomplishments in their endeavors.
Sesana Allen ’14 has been busy since graduating from Forest Ridge. In December, she was featured in Forbes Magazine 30 Under 30 for her work at a venture firm, Smash Capital. She led the firm to invest in several startups, including Fizz, a social gaming platform. Sesana is also the co-founder of the Anti-Racism Fund, a non-profit that has raised more than $1 million in its mission to combat racism and promote equality through justice system reform, education parity, health and wellness, community outreach, and social justice advocacy. In her spare time, she produces a podcast that explores issues facing millennials and Gen Z. Sesana is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, Economics and Mandarin.

Today, Shireen is the Director of Organizing at Public Rights Project, a legal advocacy organization that bridges the gap between government allies and communities impacted most by key issues like voting rights, state abuses of power, reproductive justice, and workers’ rights.
Shireen’s passion for helping others includes developing winning strategies for political campaigns and ballot initiatives in Washington and Georgia, helping to create a digital strategy for the 2019 Climate Strikes which brought almost 8 million people together in a single day, and power building in Black and Brown communities to help them fight for their rights.
