By Marcus Colchester, Patrick Anderson and Sophie Chao. First published by Forest Peoples Programme in 2014. This document seeks to compile some of the lessons learned from decades of engagement with the peoples and forests of Indonesia and their supporting organisations. It also draws from discussions held at the international Palangka Raya Conference and the recommendations made in the ensuing Palangka Raya Declaration on Deforestation and the Rights of Forest Peoples, with the intention of providing guidance and recommendations for rights-based and improved forest management and protection in the light of the Indonesia’s new presidential era. While the authors alone are responsible for any errors of fact, we recognise an enormous debt to our Indonesian friends and mentors and other Indonesianists who have led the way in rethinking forest policy in Indonesia.
