Shiny Sheet Feature In 1867, Thomas W. Burgess, an ambitious Scotsman, paddled throughout Lake Muskoka to determine where he might settle in anticipation of the Free Grants and Homestead Act of 1868. He selected a site in the area and laid his claim for 1000 acres around the (now) Bala Falls where Lake Muskoka falls into the Moon River.

He envisioned a future community built around the falling water that could and would in the future provide a source of power for a flour mill and eventually electricity for the area.

recalls a visit by two sisters who had spent a couple of summers in Muskoka over 60 years ago. “They were looking for the cottage they stayed in back then.

They did their best to remember and describe the property and through their memories I figured out where to aim them. They came back nearly in tears, excited that they had found the property and could revisit their memories.”

Burgess returned the following year (1868) with his family to start his settlement and eventually form a community. His foresight was such that it wasn’t long before others could see his vision and came to settle and support the developing community around the water fall.

Thomas W. Burgess (Sr.) was great-grandfather of Mark Gidley, a broker with Forest Hill Real Estate Inc., Brokerage. Thomas, with his family, opened a saw mill, store and bakery to serve the pioneers.

In 1872 Thomas opened a post-office named after Bala in Wales. That year the Musquosh Road linked Bala to Gravenhurst and by the 1880’s the settlement was benefiting from a growing tourist trade that began to invest in summer cottages.

Thomas and Margaret Burgess had 11 children who helped to expand the settlement. Their son, Dr. Alexander M. Burgess (Sandy), became the town doctor, and when the settlement was incorporated as a town in 1914 he became the first mayor and started Bala Electric Light and Power. Son J.W. Burgess opened the general store and mercantile, and Thomas Jr. built Roselawn Lodge on the Moon River. Daughter Kay and her husband opened Carr’s Cozy Cabins and Carr’s Pavilion, an ice cream parlor and dance hall at the falls.

In 1948, Walter Gidley, husband of Alison Burgess, the youngest daughter of Thomas Jr., established Gidley Real Estate and Insurance Ltd. in Bala. Mark joined his dad Walter in the summer of 1968 to sell real estate and eventually became both an Insurance and Real Estate Broker. Mark and his wife Patricia bought the business in 1972 and Walter retired a few years later. In 1995 the insurance portion of the business was sold and in 2012, Mark and staff joined Forest Hill Real Estate Inc., Brokerage.

On another occasion, Mark met a well-dressed, elderly couple as they were strolling Thomas W. Burgess (Sr.) along Main Street early one morning. “They explained that they had both worked at Dunn’s Pavilion as youngsters. Sometime after, university behind them, they married, had successful careers and had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. As a special gift their family hired a limo to drive them to Bala to revisit those early days; they hadn’t been back since the summer they met.

They told me they’d found that few things had changed. The roads were better and the summer station was gone, but so much was the same. Because Bala in many ways hasn’t changed it brings back a flood of memories for those who return.”

Over his 48 years of selling real estate, Mark has honoured Thomas Burgess’ legacy by helping many families realize their Muskoka dreams. He says it is those folks, many who still drop by to visit, that make his work so meaningful and rewarding. Greatgrandfather would be proud.

Thomas W. Burgess passed away in 1907 at the age of 77, but his legend lives on in Bala and through his great-grandson, Mark.

As a long-term resident, Mark’s familiarity with Muskoka has allowed him to provide more than just insurance and real estate advice. He
