You’re On the Trail to Something Big: McKean County, PA Events Springing to Life in the Allegheny National Forest Region There are plenty of opportunities in the Allegheny National Forest Region for visitors to have an un-FORE-gettable time this spring. Trail Central, located just 30 minutes south of Ellicottville - just over the state line into Pennsylvania - has many paths to follow or forge … it’s all up to you. Springtime here offers a wide variety of activities and events. The Pennhills Club in Bradford is a private club, but welcomes visitors and groups to try out the course. The first-ever We Gotta Regatta will take participants up the Tunungwant Creek by boat, canoe or kayak on Saturday, May 19 in Bradford, Pa. A celebratory pig roast will be held at the Crook Farm on Seaward Avenue following the Regatta.

HEAD TO THE FAIRWAYS

Kane Country Club, located on Scenic Route 6, has a scenic challenge for even the most accomplished golfer. On Wednesdays, the club has a deal you can really sink your teeth into. For $30, you can golf 18 holes with a cart plus have a steak dinner afterwards. Tee times start at 10am. The weekend rates are $39 if you tee off before 2pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday. After 2 pm, the price dips to $30. These prices include 18 holes of golf plus a cart. If you travel in a group of 16 or more, you can play 18 holes of golf with a cart for just $25 per person - any day of the week or weekend. They like it so much that starting May 1, they are offering a customer loyalty program. When you come and golf once, you will receive a $25 certificate for a future visit. With a 3½ star rating from Golf Digest Magazine, this 18-hole championship course with a 136 slope rating will test all golfers. Pack up your clubs and head for Pine Acres Country Club, located at 1401 West Warren Road outside of Bradford. The club boasts an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Walter J. Travis in the 1920s. The club offers packages of $135 per day, which includes unlimited golf, all lodging and food. Celebrate spring’s arrival by joining in a variety of fun-filled activities that celebrate food, wine and the great outdoors. Pay homage to the leek, a locally grown aromatic wild onion. Stinkfest, celebrated Saturday, May 5 from 11am-6pm, is held on East Main Street between South Kendall and Fisher Avenues. This is an outdoor event - held rain or shine - and it includes food vendors featuring the delicious but odorous leek, craft vendors, kiddyland, entertainment and the ever-popular outhouse race. www.stinkfest.org. The first-ever “We Gotta Regatta” will take place from 2-6pm on Saturday, May 19 in Bradford. Participants can paddle by canoe or kayak nine miles north on the Tunungwant Creek from Browntown to Crook Farm. Or plan to join the party at Crook Farm, located on Seaward Avenue where a celebratory pig roast will be held. This will include free draft beer (with proper ID) and live music from 4-6pm by Hartle & Copeland. The cost of the pig roast is $20. There is no charge to actually participate in the regatta. The event is a fundraiser for the Tuna Valley Trail Association. Tickets are available by emailing info@ tunavalleytrail.com. The Allegheny National Forest Photo Trek will be held Friday, May 18 through Sunday, May 20 at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. Set your sights on learning new photography skills in an outdoor setting by joining award-winning photographer Ed Bernik for a weekend photography workshop that treks out into the forest. Along the way, you will find out how to choose a lens and become more knowledgeable about exposure, composition and flash when shooting in color and black and white. The price is $625 for those who desire overnight accommodations; $425 for those who do not. You must be 18 years of age or older to participate. If you prefer a little wine, then head over to Kane, Pa. for Flickerfest May 26-28. This annual event, held at the Flickerwood Wine Cellars & Lounge in Kane, includes wine, food, artisan vendors, a wine-making competition and live music. The winery, located at 309 Flickerwood Road, will also have a new wine available - Kinzua Journey - in honor of the Kinzua Sky Walk. A part of the proceeds from this wine, a semi-sweet blend of three white wines, will be donated to the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau. www. flickerwood.com And while you are in the area, don’t forget to experience the Kinzua Sky Walk for yourself. This amazing masterpiece was once the highest and longest railroad bridge in the world. It was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003, and then reinvented as the Kinzua Sky Walk which features a viewing platform that extends over 600 feet into the Kinzua Gorge. Admission to the park is free; it is open from dawn to dusk.
