Speed Up Play with ‘Tee It Forward’ Nationwide Initiative Provides Greatest Playability and Enjoyment To help golfers have more fun on the course and enhance their overall experience by playing from a set of tees best suited to their abilities, The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association have partnered to support “Tee It Forward,” a new initiative proposed for golf facilities nationwide. Tee It Forward encourages all golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Golfers can speed up play by utilizing tees that provide the greatest playability and enjoyment. “Simply put, Tee It Forward can make golf much more fun for millions of people,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “We believe that by moving up to another set of tees, golfers will experience an exciting, new approach to the game that will produce more enjoyment and elevate their desire to come back and play even more golf.” With many more golfers hitting approach shots with 6- and 7-irons instead of hybrids and long irons, their chances for enjoyment increase. Also, playing from forward tees should result in fewer overall shots, shorter distance traveled on each hole, and potentially, fewer lost balls. Tee It Forward is not necessarily about creating a new set of tees - many facilities already have multiple tees in use every day. It is about changing the mindset of golfers in a positive way - encouraging people to consider setting aside playing from 6,500-6,700 yards and moving up to a length of 6,000-6,200 yards.

LOCAL COURSES Area courses on deck with the Tee It Forward initiative include Kane Country Club and Pine Acres in PA, and Concord Crest Golf Course and Holiday Valley Resort in NY. “The Tee It Forward program is a great way to make the game of golf more enjoyable,” said John Rook, Head Golf Professional at Kane Country Club. “Here at Kane Country Club, we have a short course as it is, but we still encourage members and guests to play the game from a forward tee. We also designate our tees as colors and not as genders. We have White, Gold, and Red tees, which can be played by any age and gender. I often enjoy playing a round from a forward tee - it’s fun and challenging at the same time.” Gail Ploetz, Owner of Concord Crest Golf Course, also supports the initiative. “Special events are scheduled for groups and families and we set up special tees so that they have a shorter distance to reach the greens. They enjoy it more and become interested in learning more about the game.” To learn more about the Tee It Forward initiative or to find a facility near you, log onto www.playgolfamerica.com.

The Power Of a Tourney Pink and Green Join Forces for Cancer Care in Olean, NY By Megan Sorokes On May 15 Bartlett Country Club of Olean, NY will be “all about pink” as golfers hit the greens for Olean General Hospital’s 2013 Golf to Fight Cancer Tournament. “It’s our third year hosting the tournament,” said Karen Fohl, Foundation President of Olean General Hospital. “It’s the first tournament of the season and receives a great response.” Melissa DeRose, Foundation Event Coordinator for Olean General Hospital added, “There will be a full field, and that’s about 144 golfers. We expect another 150 guests at dinner, so approximately 300 attendees total.” Golfers and guests will not only enjoy a nice dinner after the tournament, but they’ll also have the opportunity to participate in a silent auction. “We have great auction items,” Fohl said, noting several prizes include Disney tickets and PGA Championship tickets. “It’s a popular feature. All the funds benefit cancer care at Olean General Hospital and are used to finance new equipment for breast surgery and the Mildred Milliman Radiation Center, which is affiliated with Roswell Park Cancer Institute.” Both Fohl and DeRose said the event’s popularity continues to increase each year, which they believe illustrates the importance of quality cancer care to the community. “Everyone looks forward to it,” Fohl said. “Participants love to support this cause.” DeRose added, “The community really comes together for the cause, and we’re proud of the support. Everyone wears pink throughout the day … the flags are even pink. I think another big point of the tournament is that companies and individuals can participate in honor or memory of someone who has been touched by cancer.” There are various levels of sponsorship available for the tournament. “We currently have two Gold sponsors for the 2013 tournament- Exigence of Team Health, and M&T Bank,” DeRose said. “We’re holding out for one more at the moment.” Roswell Park will be this year’s lunch sponsor as well as the cart sponsor. “The tournament will be full of silver and bronze sponsors,” Fohl noted. “We’ve been blessed to fill spots soon after we send the invites.” Fohl and DeRose said all are welcome at the post-tournament dinner, and guests can also participate in the putting contest - another popular event at the tournament. Add DJ Gary Hendryx and Mercy Flight, which will provide a fly-over and ball drop to the 2013 tournament, and it’s sure to be a hit. For more information, call 716-373-2600 or visit www.ogh.org.

Golfing In a Ski Town

Welcome to Holiday Valley Resort and Conference Center Four Season Resort of Ellicottville, New York Boasts Double Black Diamonds in Both Winter and Summer TAMARACK CLUB

HOLIDAY VALLEY RESORT DOUBLE BLACK DIAMOND GOLF COURSE

MOUNTAIN COASTER

SKY HIGH ADVENTURE PARK Ellicottville, NY is synonymous with excitement and adventure. Holiday Valley Four Season Resort offers some of the best golfing around, as well as luxury course-side accommodations, and adventurous tree-top obstacle parks for thrill seekers. The downtown district is located just a mile north of Holiday Valley Resort on Route 219 (50 miles south of Buffalo, NY and less than 3 hours from Toronto.) With its eclectic shops, variety of restaurants, nightlife for all ages and a remarkable line-up of festivals throughout the year, Ellicottville has been named as one of the “Top Adventure Towns in America” by National Geographic.

By Brenda Perks

Ellicottville, New York has long been known as a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. And why wouldn’t it be? With its rolling topography and proximity to Lake Erie’s famous lake effect snow, the landscape offers every snow lover something exciting to do. These elements have helped make Holiday Valley the award winning resort that it is today. But when the last chairlift shuts down for the season and winter succumbs to spring, it only means one thing for the folks at Holiday Valley … Golf Season! While golf has been a priority at Holiday Valley for many years, recently the resort upped its game (so hopefully you can as well). Its redesigned 18-hole par 70 “Double Black Diamond” golf course is more challenging than ever, yet playable by golfers of varying skills, and offers some of the most premier scenery in Western New York. Still have your doubts that a ski resort can successfully double as a golf resort? Consider this: Between 2005 and 2008 nearly $2 million in renovations was completed. The front nine offers a nice selection of relatively flat terrain where a series of bunkers and ponds increase the complexity level on every hole. Just how good is the Double Black Diamond course? In 2009 Golf Magazine nominated the course as one of the top redesigns in the country. Now, more than ever, Holiday Valley is a destination resort for golf enthusiasts and their families. And while the front nine plays a bit longer, it is at the back nine where you will find a challenging mix of narrow, well-manicured fairways all of which are intertwined within the base of the mountain. The 6,500-yard course offers a strategic mix of unique terrain and wellwatered fairways. Between the complexity of the terrain and the scenic views, the Double Black Diamond course has something every golfer - no matter the ability level - can appreciate. If you’re looking to enhance your ability level, lessons are available through Steve Carney (Master PGA Golf Professional – one of only 212 in the country), Tom Dirito (USGTS Instructor), and Kyle Benish (PGA Assistant). Holiday Valley also welcomes the return of the nationally recognized Phil Ritson-Mel Sole Golf School every year, located at the Holiday Valley Driving Range.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Holiday Valley isn’t a renowned resort based solely on its golf course though. The accommodation options that await you and your family after you are finished golfing are what really give Holiday Valley its flair. The Inn at Holiday Valley is located just to the side of the golf course and features an indoor/outdoor pool, hot tub, sauna, and fitness room. After a challenging day on the Double Black Diamond, you’ll appreciate the numerous options for relaxation. If you are in the mood for a little more seclusion, Holiday Valley Rental Management represents over 240 condominiums, townhouses and village homes so you should be able to find lodging that fits your particular style. Speaking of style, the course-side Tamarack Club is a condominium/hotel located right next to Holiday Valley’s recently constructed (an massively large) main lodge. The Tamarack

houses an indoor/outdoor-heated pool, hot tubs, sauna, exercise room, full-service spa, valet/ bell service, an on-site restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining. John Harvard’s Brew House, the club’s award-winning, on-site restaurant, offers not only a variety of great menu options, but boasts over 20 craft beers, including some from the local Ellicottville Brewing Company. The restaurant, open daily for lunch and dinner, prepares its meals from the freshest ingredients at affordable prices. Guests of the restaurant can enjoy take-out services, as well as summertime patio dining, poolside service and room service. Phone 716-699-5350.

SKY HIGH ADVENTURE PARK

Holiday Valley’s newest adventure, Sky High, offers an Aerial Park and a Mountain Coaster in a natural setting on the Resort’s grounds. Visitors to the Aerial Park can explore the tree top courses - cross bridges, climb ladders, navigate obstacles and soar on zip lines. Jadedness won’t be of concern with eight different courses to choose from, each increasing in difficulty as they rise in height above the ground. Sharing similarities to a roller coaster with cars that ride on a track, the Mountain Coaster invites riders to load a car and ride up the hill parallel to the ski lift. At the apex, the car begins its thrilling descent zigzagging and spiraling down through the woods. Riders can control their speed using handles on the sides of the car. While the Aerial Park is open only during the summer months, the Mountain Coaster is open during the winter season as well. Since the opening of Sky High a couple summers ago, Holiday Valley has consistently worked to improve and add more features to the aerial park, providing a freshness to it with the coming of each season. You can bet a return trip to Sky High will never grow stale.

DOWNTOWN

Head less than a mile from Holiday Valley and you’ll discover the excitement of downtown Ellicottville, NY. Park the car and plan your adventure on foot, as everything is within walking distance. Between the four blocks of the downtown business district, visitors will find hours of enjoyment browsing through the many unique boutiques and gift shops, tasting the many flavors of the restaurants, and dancing the night away to live performances hosted by many of the bars on a regular basis. The local Chamber of Commerce sponsors themed events and festivals throughout the year, including the annual Summer Music Festival in July, the Taste of Ellicottville in August, and Rock ‘N Roll Weekend in September. Between all that Holiday Valley has to offer, coupled with the many attractions you’ll find downtown, it’s no wonder Ellicottville is ranked one of America’s Top Adventure Towns! Holiday Valley Resort in Ellicottville, NY can be found on the web at www.holidayvalley. com, phone 716-699-2345. The toll-free reservations number is 1-800-323-0020. Visit the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce website at www.ellicottvilleny.com to see a complete listing of the many shops, restaurants, attractions and exciting events and festivals happening throughout the year.

Play the Scenic Hills The Pennhills Club: Bradford, PA

One of McKean County’s Must-Play Courses is this 18-Hole Championship Layout Designed by Walter J. Travis in the 1920’s By Megan Sorokes

THE PENNHILLS CLUB BRADFORD, PA The Pennhills Club holds many fine country club traditions and also prides itself in its fresh, new approach to private club membership. The warm, fun, family-friendly atmosphere makes your membership here very rewarding. The enthusiastic, positive growth the club is experiencing, due to golf course improvements, excellent food and beverage service as well as the new social activity programming has kept memberships affordable.

With its championship golf course and majestic brick and slate clubhouse, The Pennhills Club is among the area’s must-play courses. “There are many people who travel here, stay and enjoy playing the course,” Dave Talon, golf course superintendent said. “We’re surrounded by mountains. They’re all around. It’s pretty as a picture.” Talon added that golfers play the course for various reasons, noting a few unique features that distinguish Pennhills from other locations. “The thing that attracts golfers to us is that we have the undulation in the fairways,” he said. “There are changes and subtle breaks. When they’re rolling fast, they can be the toughest greens around.” Jerry Hustak of Olean, NY added, “Pennhills’ greens are well-kept and generally very fast. They are challenging but fair.” Hustak added that he plays the course about once a year, advising those who have never played the course to “practice your putting because the greens are challenging.” The Pennhills Club opened in 1936 with the merging of the Country Club of Bradford and North Penn Club. Kevin Mosher, Pennhills Club’s general manager, said Walter Travis, a world-renowned architect, designed the 18-hole course with its elevated fairways and challenging greens. He said another notable architect, Clifford C. Wendehack, built the clubhouse in 1936 in less than a year. “They broke ground to build the clubhouse in September 1936, and we opened in June 1937,” Mosher said, noting that the club offers many amenities including a swimming pool and fine dining. “We also do wedding receptions, averaging 15 to 20 a year.” Pennhills is also the home of numerous tournaments, such as the Zippo Open and CanAm Challenge, a competition between Canadian and American golfers. Mosher said the Can-Am Challenge is one of the club’s biggest tournaments. Various golf and getaway packages, as well as special rates for group day trips are available at Pennhills throughout the summer season and into the fall. Special Canadian resident memberships and special non-resident memberships - both with unlimited golf - are also available. For more information on The Pennhills Club, its memberships or packages, please call 814-368-6159 or visit the club’s website at www.pennhillsclub.com.

Cardinal Hills Golf Course: Randolph, New York Gentle Rolling Hills and Undulations Provide an Enjoyable yet Challenging Golf Experience; Take Advantage of Special Spring Rates By Megan Sorokes

Gentle rolling hills, old growth maple trees and beautiful scenic views make Cardinal Hills Golf Course a premier golf destination in Western New York. “It has a classic feel to it,” said Eric Brown, general manager of Cardinal Hills. “We have some major change in elevation, so when you get to the top (of some hills), it’s almost a 360-degree view and it’s pretty panoramic.” E.A. Keith opened Cardinal Hills in July 1928 with a nine-hole layout. In the late 1960s, Sam Abbott developed it into the 18-hole, par-72 course that exists today. Yardage ranges from 6,109 at the back tees to 5,605 at the front tees. “All the holes are rated by handicap. The number one handicap is usually the hardest hole, and ours is a par 5,” Brown said. “The hole is number two with 490 yards. A lot of people comment that it’s a beautiful hole to play.” Jared Mazzant, an Aero-Thermo engineer at Dresser-Rand Company in Olean, NY, said the layout of the course is one reason he enjoys golfing at Cardinal Hills. “The layout is great,” Mazzant said. “There are a good multitude of different types of par 3s, 4s and 5s as in short, long, tight, open, straight or dog-legged. There is a good mix of hazards and bunkers.” Guests at Cardinal Hills welcomed many changes at the course just in the past few years, with more expected for this upcoming season. According to Brown, after management changed a few years ago, they began remodeling the course to enhance its reputation. “We went through a stagnant stage and nothing was improved,” Brown said. “Now we’re trying to change things around. We made modifications to some of our holes. We’ve tried to pick up a few - two to three - projects a year to improve the course as much as possible.” Cardinal Hills Golf Course, its clubhouse and amenities are open to the public. Additional amenities at Cardinal Hills include pro shop merchandise, dining at the clubhouse and a relaxed bar atmosphere. Weekend, weekday and senior rates are available. Cardinal Hills also offers special spring rates for a limited time. For more information, please call 716358-5409 or visit the course website at www.cardinalhillsny.com.

CARDINAL HILLS RANDOLPH, NY

Located just two miles off Interstate 86 (exit 16) in New York State, Cardinal Hills Golf Course is easily accessible to golfers from all over the region. The course was founded in 1927 as a 9-hole layout, and was developed into an 18-hole course in the early 1960’s. Gentle rolling hills and undulations provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf experience. The beautiful scenic views and natural rural settings which surround the course are one of a kind.

Western New York has an assorted selection of golf courses. With the combination of its plush, green rolling hills and its wide-open landscapes, this area offers a magnitude of golfing opportunities that can challenge even the most seasoned of golfers. But what if you’re in the mood for something a little easier in the golfing stratosphere … maybe something that would make for a good date night … or that the entire family can enjoy? Well, then you are probably talking about miniature golf and in that case your options are limited. Luckily for you there is a solution. Snuggly nestled in between Salamanca, NY and Bradford, PA sits Limestone, NY, home of Mystic Water Resort. Conveniently located on the edge of a scenic 20-acre lake, Mystic Water Resort offers a variety of family entertainment options. Known throughout Western New York for its serene location, this unique facility is much more than just a miniature golf destination. Situated within the grounds are rental cabins that one would be hard-pressed to classify as “roughing-it” in terms of camping accommodations. Each cabin is capable of comfortably sleeping four people and comes with a furnished living room, two bedrooms (one with a Queen size bed and one with bunk beds), a fire pit and charcoal grill. A fully equipped kitchen also allows guests all the conveniences of modern living even though the view outside the window depicts nothing but old-fashioned country living. Owned and operated by Bill and Karla Rounsville, a very gregarious and energetic couple, Mystic Water Resort started off as a driving range twelve years ago when Bill thought it would be fun to put his waterfront property to use while allowing golf fanatics to work on their swing. And after some initial issues of finding floating golf balls, the Rounsvilles were on track for a newfound labor of love. “In today’s economy you couldn’t make it if you didn’t do all the work yourself,” said Bill Rounsville. “Over the years my extended family has been great about pitching in and helping us get projects done. But recently they don’t seem to visit as much. I think they’re afraid of getting roped into more work.” Soon after the aquatic driving range opened, the Rounsvilles began talking about building the miniature golf course. But they knew that if they were going to go that route they would have to go all in. Using their property, which at one point was a horse pasture, they began building cabins around the lake and they expanded by building a rustic pavilion not too far from the lake. Over the years the pavilion received some additions as business started to expand. Before they knew it, Bill and Karla were renting out the grounds for birthday parties, graduations, corporate outings, reunions and even weddings. The miniature golf course is an 18-hole championship facility that is sure to test the short game skill-set of even the most accomplished golfer while still providing plenty of fun for kids of all ages. Fusing a perfect blend of natural grass, floral, shrubs, water, and hand-laid stone, a group of local landscapers constructed a course that is as pleasing visually as it is to play on. And as far as degree of difficulty is concerned, you will quickly learn that this course is no pushover. The course was developed in such a manner that on a fair number of the holes, if you are not careful, you will find your ball rolling right back to you. The Rounsvilles’ business philosophy centers around the idea that you have to put the money you make back into your establishment in order to make it succeed. “Word of mouth has really helped us get new customers but we also advertise in various county magazines and we belong to the Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce, which has been very effective because we’re now starting to get skiers renting the cabins during the winter. We’re not that far from Ellicottville and we offer a great value for families looking to rent a place to stay.”

The First Tee program is supported by golf’s major organizations, including the LPGA, Masters Tournament, PGA of America, PGA Tour, and the United States Golf Association

2013 Program starts in July The First Tee program, established by the World Golf Foundation in 1997, is committed to providing learning opportunities to participating youth who would not otherwise have access to the game. Offered to children 18 and under, the program ultimately strives to instill in participants The First Tee Nine Core Values of: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment. The First Tee program is organized and based out of World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida, but has progressively developed outlets across the U.S., including Concord Crest Golf Course of East Concord, NY Through the Life Skills Experience, young people discover how skills essential to success on a golf course can also help them flourish in life. As a result of their involvement in The First Tee program, Concord Crest has developed a 3-hole, par 10 practice facility on-site. Class sizes remain small, at a ratio of six students to one coach, allowing for a more individualized approach per student. A fee of $60 is charged for the six-week program, however, Concord Crest does offer scholarships. For more information about The First Tee program at Concord Crest Golf Course, call Sue Frentz, Director of Golf, at 716-474-9162 or visit www.concordcrest.com. GET OUT IN NATURE

It’s a white water rafting and angling paradise: Famous for its thrilling springtime rapids and listed in the top 10 steelhead fishing sites by fishing magazines, Cattaraugus Creek is high on the must-do list of whitewater adventure seekers. Hire a guide or maneuver on your own through class II and III plus rapids while soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the Zoar Valley dotted with pristine waterfalls, majestic cliffs and old-growth forests. The abundance of naturally populated and well-stocked creeks, streams and lakes throughout Cattaraugus County annually attract fishing enthusiasts angling for trout when the season opens April 1. Savor the sweetness of “Maple in the Mountains”: As warm spring temperatures arrive, so does the eagerly awaited sugaring season. Maple trees all over the county are tapped to release the clear ambrosia that becomes Western New York’s nectar-sweet maple syrup. Visit state-of-the-art to old-fashioned maple production facilities on two Maple Weekends: March 16-17 and March 23-24. Your whole family will enjoy touring local sugar shacks, learning how maple syrup is made and relish melt-in-your-mouth pancakes smothered in locally made syrup. On April 27-28, Franklinville’s Western New York Maple Festival hums with hundreds of arts and crafts booths, all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfasts, maple syrup products, food vendors and entertainment for all ages.
