Tonight we present to you a magical evening of jazz and spoken word honoring the legacy of master jazz drummer and co-founder, Mr. Billy Higgins. We have meticulously designed a concert lineup in the spirit of Billy, which we felt he would appreciate and love.

With your contributions combined with the generosity of our myriad of talented artists, and the hard work of our volunteers, we have been able to keep The World Stage alive, vibrant and thriving. Your support makes a world of difference to us and indicates that you are within this quest to preserve the history and rich culture that this art form contributes to the community and the world.

The World Stage was founded 25 years ago by Billy and Poet Laureate Kamau Daaood. We provide various workshops that are geared to assist in developing the talents of aspiring artists while also functioning as a premier jazz venue.

OUR LEGACY

HISTORY The World Stage Performance Gallery is a non-profit,

arts, educational and performance venue in the Leimert Park Village, the heart of Los Angeles’ African-American cultural community. The mission of the World Stage is to provide leadership to secure, preserve and advance the musical and oral tradition of African-American music and literature. Home to a talented list of musicians, poets, writers, singers and storytellers are also workshops where classical and emerging forms of creative expression are supported and presented.

The World Stage opened in 1989 just in time to help lead Leimert Park’s last renaissance. The Brockman Gallery, the anchor of the Village’s cultural life for over two decades, was getting ready

World Stage Stories, a printed and videotaped series, presents a rare glimpse into the lives of those who have championed the indigenous American art form of jazz, was produced by Chet Hanley and Jeffrey Winston in collaboration with Clint Rosemond as the executive producer.

As a vital part of the World Stage’s educational component, these intimate portraits enlightened as well as entertained. Each artist presented a brief clinic, demonstrating the various aspects of jazz such as theory, harmony, rhythm and improvisation. Early exposure plants the seed,

Determined to keep alive the flame of community arts in Leimert, the late world renowned master jazz drummer, Billy Higgins and poet and community arts activist Kamau Daáood rented the former Brockman storefront on Degnan Blvd and christened the new space The World Stage Performance Gallery. It was in the wake of the 1992 unrest that The Stage, as it is affectionately called, and the surrounding neighborhood really took off. Leimert Park Village became a safe haven--a place for healing, renewal, fellowship. “It seemed like it happened overnight,” Dwight Trible remembers.

Some of the biggest names in jazz have passed through those doors, to teach a master class, or just jam: Horace Tapscott, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Herbie Hancock, Dianne Reeves and Cedar Walton, just to name a few. The Anansi Writers Workshop, founded by Kamau Daáood, opened the doors for internationally renowned poets and writers to pass through such as Wanda Coleman, “ S e e k i n g

inspiring young people to develop a solid work ethic and genuine appreciation for the arts.

The World Stage fosters exchange and interaction between artists of all levels, from beginning to advanced, and provides a place for artistic self-discovery, experimentation and critical feedback from an expressive audience. Master musical, vocal and literary classes, uniquely embrace, nurture, and link youth with elders in a nourishing environment.

The World Stage Performance Gallery is more than a space; it is also a spirit built by the contributions of many artists that recognized the need to secure an institutional base that reflects the flavor and rhythm of this vibrant community.

BIOGRAPHIES Jazz vocalist DWIGHT TRIBLE has been hailed by the LA Weekly as “our main local conduit for cosmic energy.” He has awed audiences all over Southern California with his versatile, imaginative style and vocal dexterity.

Winner of the 2011 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, CARMEN LUNDY is an accomplished singer, composer, actress, and painter. Juan Rodriguez of The Montreal Gazette says of her: “A classic jazz singer – not retro, but the real deal – with an adventurous style and imposing voice.”

BENNIE MAUPIN is best known for his work with Herbie Hancock as well as his atmospheric bass clarinet playing on Miles Davis’s classic Bitches Brew album. He has also collaborated with artists such as Roy Haynes, Woody Shaw, Lee Morgan and the late Horace Silver.

Flutist and saxophonist HUBERT LAWS is that rare musician who moves effortlessly from jazz to classical to R&B. A graduate of Julliard, he has played with the Jazz Crusaders, been a guest soloist with numerous orchestras, and is featured on Gil Scott-Heron’s classic track “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” In 2010 he received an NEA lifetime achievement award.

Inglewood native KAMASI WASHINGTON combines serious jazz chops with an ability to collaborate with hip-hop artists like Snoop Dogg, and R&B singers like Raphael Saadiq and Chaka Khan.

He has recorded with Gerald Wilson, George Duke, and Quincy Jones. His ambitious, 3-disc Epic is one of the year’s most highly anticipated releases.

A noted alum of the famed Watts Writers Workshop, poet and “word musician” KAMAU DAÁOOD has consistently drawn inspiration from jazz. He has performed alongside musicians from Horace Tapscott to Billy Higgins, with whom he co-founded The World Stage. A selection of his poems is collected in The Language of Saxophones and recorded on the CD “Leimert Park.”

PATRICE LOUISE RUSHEN has done it all. As a pianist she won a solo competition at the Monterey Jazz Festival at the age of 18, and two years later debuted on the Prestige label with Joe Henderson. She had success in the 80’s as an R&B singer, in the 90’s as a musical director for Janet Jackson, and in 2004 was the first female musical director for the Grammy Awards.

As a musician, composer, and arranger, MIGUEL ATWOOD-FERGUSON has appeared on over 300 recordings. Fluent in jazz, classical, and hip-hop, he has worked with an impressive range of musicians including Ray Charles, Erykah Badu, Dr. Dre, Rihanna and Big Boi (Outkast). He is one of the most sought-after studio players and musical directors in the southland.

A resident ensemble at The World Stage, S.H.I.N.E. MAWUSI (“Sisters Healing, Inspiring, Nurturing, and Empowering, in the Hands of God”… MAWUSI means “In the Hands of God”) was formed by Rene Fisher-Mims to spread knowledge of West African Drum culture to women in the diaspora.

JAHA ZAINABU is a literary poet, spoken word artist, storyteller, visual artist and motivational speaker has been featured in venues throughout the country such as The Getty Museum, The World Stage, and The Nuyorcian Café, and appeared on BET’s Lyric Cafe and Robert Townsend’s “Spoken.” She runs a weekly writing workshop at Nishati Vibrations in Inglewood, CA.
