UNITY IN THE COMMUNITY

Co-Chairman of Dunbar festivalParaDe, Cornell agent, talks about the uPComing festivities

Back

LadyChelle of Ford Entertainment

Magazine recently interviewed Cornell Agent, co-chairman of the Dunbar Festival Parade, about the upcoming annual festivities. Agent, a lifelong resident of Fort Myers, grew up participating in it and feels honored to help put it together.

The Dunbar Easter Parade is a 78-year-old tradition that brings the community together. Agent emphasized that it’s no longer just a predominantly Black or African American parade, but a parade for the entire city to enjoy. This year’s parade is expected to be the largest ever, with five bands, horses, and other entertainment.

Front row Valerie Ervin, Antionette Gilmore, Windy Gavin, Vonda Curry, Tauyna Cola, DeMarshan Diggs, Kim Thomas row Cornell Agent, Algee Johnson, Allorica McCauley, Amber Ware, Martin Byrd, Vivian Thomas, Eddie Hardin, Todd Thomas

The parade is organized by the Dunbar Festival Committee, which Agent co-chairs alongside Tauyna Cola. They began planning the event last August with the goal of creating a parade that is more diverse and reaching out to more people. Agent said the parade will offer something for everyone and encourages all to come out and support this unity in the community type of day. The community will also have the opportunity to participate in an event after the parade at the Stars Complex featuring two DJs from Miami, food, clothing, jewelry vendors, and more.

Agent emphasized that the overall message of the Dunbar Easter Parade is that the community can overcome any obstacles it faces. He hopes that everyone who attends will feel like they have made a difference and will come back year after year to enjoy this family reunion-like event.

He expressed gratitude to the committee and everyone who has helped plan the event, noting that Martin Byrd, President of the Dunbar Festival Committee, “has been there to assist with everything he was asked for, and it has been a pleasure to work with him on this event.”

The overall message of the Dunbar Easter Parade is that our community can overcome any obstacles that it has ever faced. It’s the unity in our community that we’re reaching out to.

- Cornell Agent, co-chairman of the Dunbar Festival Parade

Tamara “Joy” Hunter has been selected as the Grand Marshal for the upcoming Dunbar Easter Parade in 2023. She is a 20-year educator and a graduate of Norfolk State University. Mrs. Hunter is happily married and a proud mother of four honor graduates. She has been advocating for the community from a young age, with her grandmother starting her early on community service.

Mrs. Hunter has continued to partner with various community leaders and groups to meet the needs of underprivileged families and academically struggling students. As the Grand Marshal, Mrs. Hunter will be leading the parade in the city of Fort Myers and will remind everyone that it takes a village to raise a child and to “be kind because someone is pretending it’s sunny on a rainy day.”

CONQUERING IMPOSTER SYNDROME: TIPS FOR BOOSTING SELF-CONFIDENCE AND ACHIEVING SUCCESS

Imposter syndrome is a psychological pattern where an individual doubts their accomplishments and feels like they are a fraud, despite evidence of their competence. It can be a significant barrier to personal and professional growth, affecting one’s self-esteem and confidence. Here are some tips on how to conquer imposter syndrome:

Recognize and acknowledge your feelings: The first step in overcoming imposter syndrome is to recognize and acknowledge your feelings. Don’t dismiss your thoughts or feelings, but rather acknowledge them and address them.

Reframe your thoughts: Focus on your achievements and the skills that you bring to the table. Reframe your thoughts from “I don’t deserve this job” to “I have earned this job through my hard work and skills.”

Seek validation: Talk to colleagues, friends, or mentors who can validate your skills and accomplishments. Sometimes hearing positive feedback from others can help to counter negative self-talk.

Set realistic goals: Setting realistic goals and focusing on achievable outcomes can help you feel more in control and build your confidence.

Embrace learning: Imposter syndrome often stems from a fear of failure. Instead of seeing failure as a reflection of your inadequacy, embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Celebrate successes: Celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. Recognizing and celebrating your accomplishments can help boost your self-confidence and combat feelings of inadequacy.

Practice self-care: Taking care of your physical and emotional well-being is crucial in combating imposter syndrome. Make time for activities that make you feel good, such as exercise, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones.

Overcoming imposter syndrome is a process that requires self-awareness, reflection, and positive self-talk. By focusing on your accomplishments, seeking validation, setting realistic goals, embracing learning, celebrating successes, and practicing self-care, you can conquer imposter syndrome and build the confidence you need to succeed.

Acknowledge your ACCOMPLISHMENTS and focus on the SKILLS that you bring to the table, rather than doubting your worth and feeling like a fraud.

& JAZZ DEVON & JAZZ

Nobody gives the internet everything - Devon

Over the Years, and timeframe, I done got a thick skin- Jazz DEVON

Ladychelle: It’s the one and only Devon & Jazz! My daughter loves you guys. Let everybody know who you are and where they know you from.

Jazz: So I’m Jasmine, everybody knows me from social media with of course Bae. We’ve been doing this for a while now. We started on Facebook and kind of just went from there.

Ladychelle: Is that something that started on purpose?

Jazz: Honestly, no, it was literally just like accident. Like, not accidentally, but, it just happened naturally. It wasn’t forced or anything. Bae can tell you cuz he was the one who started everything really.

Devon: Basically it was, a picture that went viral and then when the picture went viral, Facebook started going live, like around that time too. And then we started going live, we was like, all these people liking our pictures and our posts and stuff. We go live and see nobody tuned in, and then a whole bunch of people started tuning in from there. We just went from there and they were the ones who inspired us to start YouTube up.

Ladychelle: I love that. Now was it hard to step into a lane that not a lot of people believed in?

Devon: No. Not for me. Cause I always been like an outgoing person, so I always been the person that was down to do whatever. If it was a dollar, I was down to do it. So basically, no, not for me, but for Jazz, I mean it was kind of different for Jazz.

Jazz: I didn’t really care too, too much for it. But as we continue to keep going, it kind of just became, you know, natural and a part of our every day. But at first I wasn’t with it.

Ladychelle: You guys went through a lot, the audience have been able to see your ups and downs, your challenges. Is that hard having everybody in your game room?

Jazz: Well, for me, in the beginning it was very hard, but over the years, and timeframe I done, you know, got a thick skin. I never used to really, it used to break me down. Sometimes it used to irritate me cuz so many people was in tuned with what we were doing in our life, knowing our ins and outs, our whereabouts and et cetera. So it was kind of a lot for me sometime. But for Devon it was never really.

Devon: It wasn’t bad for me because I always been in the limelight. Even just in school and in the city. If I did something, it seemed everybody knew about it or if it was a problem everybody knew about it. So everybody always had opinions if it was in person or on the internet.

Ladychelle: As parents from a parents’ point of view. Just switching the gear real quick. Do you ever hesitate in including your daughter?

Jazz: I shielded her from basically, certain stuff, certain videos, if it don’t make sense, to put my daughter in it and it has nothing to do with her, then no, she’s not in it. But if she happens to, you know, walk in to like a video or something like that. But as far as us doing a

daily vlog, she’s in it like no matter what. We even gave her her own YouTube channel and stuff. So now she just, she picks up a camera on her own and started vlogging and going around the house. And it’s not even recording, she just talking to the camera.

Devon: This is gonna be something she enjoys and this is gonna be her lame because she’s seen mommy and daddy do it for so long. But I don’t like sometimes, you gotta be careful with the internet cuz the internet is a lot.

Ladychelle: Now is there anything that the audience don’t get to see?

Devon: Well we got stuff that the internet don’t see for sure. Cause we don’t record every single day. And we don’t put everything on camera. So yeah, we got private stuff. Personally, I don’t feel like nobody gives the internet everything.

Ladychelle: I agree with that. Are you using this platform to do other things?

Devon: I’m down for whatever come with it. Long as it makes sense. If somebody wants us to sign us to a network and take our YouTube show onto a bigger platform, if it makes sense, I’ll do it.

Ladychelle: We love watching you guys, so I can’t wait to see what you guys got in store. Where can we follow you?

Jazz: When we have anything major, everything will be on YouTube.

Devon: Yeah, it’ll be mentioned in our video somewhere. You gotta watch the videos.

Breaking Barriers: Sarasota Six’s Speaks Music, Film, and Technology

LadyChelle: It’s your girl, LadyChelle, Ford Entertainment Magazine, and I’m speaking with Sarasota Six. What’s up? Introduce yourself and let everybody know who you are.

Sarasota Six: Yes, my name is Sarasota Six, formerly known as Big Six from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

LadyChelle: Okay. Tell us more about what you do as an artist. Give us the gist of your artistry, gifts, and talents.

Sarasota Six: I feel blessed to be able to do it all, but music is my love. I’ve been doing music for a long time. I also have a podcast, but it’s currently on hold. I’m just focused on making money right now.

LadyChelle: Tell us about the nature of your music, the vibe, and paint a picture for the listeners.

Sarasota Six: So the type of music I make today is, more fun, more enjoyable type of music. You know, there’s enough gangsters and killers out there. So I just try to switch up the vibe, and, and have fun with the music, make music for the women. So I keep that in mind when I’m in the lab, you know?

LadyChelle: So you on purpose stay away from toxic subjects in your music. Is that what you would say?

Sarasota Six:I wouldn’t say on purpose because, I came from that environment, but, you know, it’s just like a conscious decision to try to stay away from certain things. I mean, like I said, it’s, it’s plenty of stuff that’s being promoted right now today, so I, we, don’t need more of that. But sometimes, you have to touch on it just so people can understand the authenticity of your music, you know?

LadyChelle: Let’s dig into that a little bit more. A lot of artists, they kind of use music as their therapy almost. So as they’re a certain type of lifestyle, they have to put it on music. So tell me about coming from an environment that, you know, is, for a lack of better word, negative, but turning it to reflect the positive.

Sarasota Six: Well, it comes with maturity. When you young, that’s the shit to do, you know? Of course. And the music is telling you to do it. So you just, you go through stuff and you learn and you get smarter and then you watch people around you, people fall off, people die, people go to prison. So you kind of try to walk that fine line, you know?

LadyChelle: Yeah, because a question that I like to ask people

is, do you think life is imitating art? Or do you feel like art is imitating life?

Sarasota Six: I feel like art is imitating life. I mean, you take your, when people make music, when you create, you take your experiences or you take the experiences of people around you, you take that energy and recreate more art. So when people say there’s nothing new under the sun, that’s exactly what it is, you know? Cause people just, we as human beings, we just take the energy and just recreate art.

LadyChelle: Music you say is, is your first love, like, what other loves do you have in regards to art?

Sarasota Six: Oh, yeah. I have two movies written. Right now I’m just getting them into the correct format, and trying to get them out there, get some funding behind ‘em. So yeah, definitely movies. I also have a book that’s on the way and I dabble into technology also, so I have some NFTs that’s on the way too.

Ladychelle: Tell us a little bit, tell us a little bit more about your book.

Sarasota Six: Well, I don’t have an official title for the book because, my editor made me change it <laugh>. But, the book is, actually a horror, slash drama, a black horror film. So

that’ll be different, you know? It deals with racism, but it’s actually like a reverse racism. So it’s gonna be very interesting for our people to actually see this type of a movie.

LadyChelle: I love that. I love creatives who, function outside of the box. So I’m definitely looking forward to seeing all of those projects.

Sarasota Six: That’s my motto right there, outside the box, like, don’t even put me in the box.

LadyChelle: Definitely. Now, I had a quick nosy question. Sarasota Six, you say you hail out of Fort Lauderdale, break down the name for me real quick.

Sarasota Six: A lot of people hit me with that one. I’m a Floridian, you know, Florida is my home, every city, you know, no disrespect to the, to the people that’s in the city, but if you are a Floridian, you are a Floridian. You can move around anywhere, you know what I’m saying? I firmly believe in wiping your feet before you go into anybody else city, you know? And that’s what I do. But Sarasota is a place in Florida that I would like to end up and retire in. Why? Because it’s nice, it’s beautiful. It’s one of the most beautiful cities in Florida, you know? Like I said, formerly, my name was Big six, I just dropped it big and put Sarasota on the front because that represents Florida.
