DIRECTOR ’S NOTES A troubled young woman is invited for a weekend in the country. It is at the home of a free spirited lady, her handsome husband and her aged father. The guests include the young woman’s father, the father’s Boss and the Governor’s Lady. There are a few guests who do not have invitations. The address is Heartbreak House. And heartbreak is the common ground that this fractious group shares.

All great plays are able to hold up the mirror to another time or place. Heartbreak House is the greatest play of one of the English language’s greatest playwrights, George Bernard Shaw. Here Shaw is writing of England in the first part of the 20th century. It is a world that is overripe, overfed and scared as hell. It is a place full of certainties and assumptions, yet without security. It is a place where people argue and call each other names. It is the land of the have’s and the have-nots, but one can’t be too sure of which is which. It is a country at the end of its empire.

HEARTBREAK HOUSE PROFILES Jeannie Affelder (Nurse Guinness) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut. She recently played Simone Beck in TO MASTER THE ART directed by William Brown and was seen speaking French in WHEN SHE DANCED (TimeLine Theatre Company). She has performed with First Folio Theatre, Bailiwick Repertory Theatre, Court Theatre, Circle Theatre, Chicago Dramatists, ShawChicago and City Lit Theater Company, where she was awarded Joseph Jefferson Citations for Best Production and Best Ensemble for THE GOOD TIMES ARE KILLING ME. Affelder is a former weekend voice and guest host on WBEZ Radio. She sends love always to D, C, M and J. Atra Asdou (Ellie Dunn) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut. Recent Chicago credits include MAKE ME LOVE YOU (The Verge Theatre Company), WRATH: REVERB (Goodman Theatre), SCORCHED (Silk Road Theatre Project) and THIRST (Chicago Dramatists). Asdou can also be glimpsed in a commercial for Ji Ga Zo. She is represented by Gray Talent Group and holds a BA in Theatre from Loyola University Chicago.

John Reeger (Captain Shotover) returns to Writers’ Theatre where he was last seen in BACH AT LEIPZIG. He has been a proud member of Actor’s Equity for 37 years.

Recent credits include THE ILLUSION, THE WILD DUCK (Court Theatre), THE MUSIC MAN, THE DROWSY CHAPERONE (Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire), RICHARD III, AMADEUS (Chicago Shakespeare Theater), CURTAINS (Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace), 42nd STREET and LES MISERABLES (Fulton Theatre in Lancaster). Reeger co-authored the holiday musical THE CHRISTMAS SCHOONER with Julie Shannon, which has received more than 100 productions throughout the USA and England. Reeger has received a Joseph Jefferson Award, an After Dark Award and an Illinois Artist Fellowship. Reeger and his wife, actress Paula Scrofano, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary this summer. They are very proud of their grown children Adam and Alison.

Karen Janes Woditsch (Hesione Hushabye) returns to Writers’ Theatre where she has been seen in multiple roles in DO THE HUSTLE, Gertrude in ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, Emilia in OTHELLO (After Dark Award), Masha in SEAGULL, Jennifer Dubidat in THE DOCTOR’S DILEMMA, Belle Stark in ROCKET TO THE MOON, among many others.

Martin Yurek (Hector Hushabye) makes his Writers’ Theatre debut.

Yurek has appeared at Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Court Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, Northlight Theatre, Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Illinois 8 Writers’ Theatre

Theatre Center, Ravinia Festival, Victory Gardens Theater, Chicago Dramatists, ShawChicago, Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, Theatre at the Center and The Theatre Building Chicago.

Regionally, Yurek has appeared at the MaltzJupiter Theatre, Utah Shakespeare, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre, Riverfront Playhouse, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Madison Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, New American Theater, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Riverside Shakespeare and five seasons with Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival (in residence at the University of Notre Dame). Off-Broadway Yurek appeared at the New Victory Theatre. Yurek received his training at the Theatre School at DePaul University.

George Bernard Shaw (Author) was the most celebrated and influential Irish playwright of his generation. In a career that spanned seven decades, he wrote over 60 plays, of which many have entered the canon of Western drama. His plays include MRS. WARREN’S PROFESSION, ARMS AND THE MAN, CANDIDA, CAESAR AND CLEOPATRA, MAN AND SUPERMAN, MAJOR BARBARA, THE DOCTOR’S DILEMMA, MISALLIANCE, ANDROCLES AND THE LION, PYGMALION, HEARTBREAK HOUSE and SAINT JOAN. Born in Dublin in 1856, Shaw moved to London at the age of 20 and began writing criticism before garnering major success as a playwright. He also was a socialist and an active member of the Fabian Society. Shaw is also the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize for Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938 for PYGMALION). His success had made him a household name in the English-speaking world by the time he passed away in 1950 at the age of 94.

William Brown (Director) directed the world premiere of Brett Neveu’s DO THE HUSTLE at Writers’ Theatre, where he has directed productions of OLD GLORY, AS YOU LIKE IT, ANOTHER PART OF THE FOREST, ARMS AND THE MAN, OUR TOWN, ROCKET TO THE MOON, MISALLIANCE, THE GLASS MENAGERIE and Arthur Miller’s INCIDENT AT VICHY. For the last five years he has directed A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Goodman Theatre and at Northlight Theatre he has directed LADY WINDERMERE’S FAN, THE CHALK GARDEN and his own adaptation with music of SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER. At American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, he has directed HAY FEVER, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, A MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT DREAM, NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, Shaw’s YOU NEVER CAN TELL, ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL, THE CHERRY ORCHARD, TWELFTH NIGHT and Thornton Wilder’s THE MATCHMAKER. He is the Associate Artistic Director of Montana Shakespeare in the Parks where he most recently directed ROMEO AND JULIET. Brown received a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Henry Kissinger in NIXON’S NIXON. Keith Pitts (Scenic Designer) returns to Writers’ Theatre, where he previously worked on OLD GLORY, AS YOU LIKE IT, THE SAVANNAH DISPUTATION, OTHELLO and THE PUPPETMASTER OF LODZ. Pitts has been designing scenery in the midwest since 2000. In addition, Healy teaches drawing, painting and design to young theatre artists at DePaul University. She is a member of United Scenic Artists #829.

Andrew Hansen (Composer and Sound Designer) returns to Writers’ Theatre where his work was last heard in DO THE HUSTLE. He is an associate artist at TimeLine Theatre Company where recent productions include IN DARFUR, TO MASTER THE ART and FROST/NIXON. He designed MARY at Goodman Theatre, THE OUTGOING TIDE at Northlight Theatre and THE CRITIC at American Players Theatre.

Hansen has received 18 Joseph Jefferson Nominations, two Joseph Jefferson Citations and three After Dark Awards.

Jesse Klug (Lighting Designer) returns to Writers’ Theatre, where he previously worked on TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT and OH COWARD!. His Chicago theater credits include Broadway in Chicago, Goodman Theatre, Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Drury Lane Theatre, Victory Gardens Theater, Lookingglass Theatre Company, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Court Theatre, Strawdog Theatre Company, Uma Productions and American Theater Company, among others.

Bobby Kennedy (Dramaturg) resumes his role as dramaturg and marks his third season as Writers’ Theatre’s producing assistant/literary associate. He has previously worked on DO THE HUSTLE, SHE LOVES ME, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, THE OLD SETTLER, OH COWARD! and ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD. Kennedy co-founded The Spontaneous Theater Project in Boston and served as assistant director and dramaturg on the company’s debut production of THE SHAPE OF THINGS. He has also worked with Huntington Theatre Company, New Repertory Theatre and Metropolis Performing Arts Center. Kennedy is an alumnus of Boston University.

Eva Breneman (Dialect and Vocal Coach) returns to Writers’ Theatre after working on TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, THE MAIDS, THE PUPPETMASTER OF LODZ and BACH AT LEIPZIG. Michael Halberstam (Artistic Director) is the co-founder of Writers’ Theatre. Halberstam has appeared in numerous Writers’ Theatre productions including RICHARD II (title role), LOOT and MISALLIANCE. Previously, he spent two years at The Stratford Festival in Ontario and performed in TIMON OF ATHENS, THE KNIGHT OF THE BURNING PESTLE (title role), MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and AS YOU LIKE IT. Halberstam’s other Chicago acting credentials include productions with Wisdom Bridge, Court Theatre and Chicago Shakespeare Theater. He spent two and a half years teaching Shakespeare at The Theatre School at DePaul University and has received awards for excellence in theater management and/or artistic achievement from The Chicago Drama League, The Arts & Business Council, Chicago Lawyers for the Creative Arts, The Chicago Associates of the Stratford Festival and most recently The 2010 Zelda Fichandler Award.

Kathryn M. Lipuma (Executive Director) joined Writers’ Theatre in March 2007 after nine seasons with the award-winning Signature Theatre Company in New York where she was Executive Director. At Signature, she produced 28 productions including award-winning revivals of Horton Foote’s THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, August Wilson’s SEVEN GUITARS and Lanford Wilson’s BURN THIS and worked with such acclaimed writers as Edward Albee, Lee Blessing, Horton Foote, Maria Irene Fornes, John Guare, Bill Irwin, Romulus Linney, Paula Vogel, August Wilson and Lanford Wilson. During her tenure, the organization enjoyed consistent growth

and recognition. Among its numerous awards and accolades was recognition as Outstanding National Theatre of the Year and the launch of Signature Theatre Company’s successful $15 Ticket Program, which has become a national model for subsidized ticket programming. Prior to her time at Signature, she spent six years with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre.

Lipuma has consulted with not-for-profit theatres, hosted fundraising seminars for development professionals from across the country and has been a guest lecturer on arts management in the graduate programs at New York University, Marymount Manhattan College and Northwestern University. She has served on numerous arts and funding panels, including the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Philadelphia Theatre Institute for the Pew Charitable Trust, the Multi-Arts Production (MAP) Fund, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Lipuma currently serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the League of Chicago Theatres. She is a graduate of The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

ABOUT THE WOM AN’S LIBR ARY CLUB OF GLENCOE The Women’s Library Club of Glencoe (WLC), whose building now houses Writers’ Theatre’s 108 seat venue, was the third women’s club formed in Illinois. Organized in 1872 for social and intellectual improvement, the Club formed the nucleus of a library for Glencoe. The club earned their name when its first building was used as the town’s library until the Glencoe Public Library was completed.

Organized 140 years ago and still working, today’s WLC members meet bi-monthly to sew for Stroger Hospital patients and monthly to play bridge, book discussions with Random Readers and to enjoy an informative luncheon program. Committees are assigned functions such as collecting books for hospitalized children and operating the business of the Glen Cote Thrift Shop, located at 372 Hazel Avenue, Glencoe. The club organizes fundraisers thought the year, with proceeds distributed to charities. WLC’s most treasured byproduct is friendship.

WRITERS’ HISTORY In 1992, Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Artistic Associate Marilyn Campbell founded Writers’ Theatre to create an environment where the written word and the nurturing of artists were the foundation of all productions. Its first venue was discovered through a mutual friend who knew that the owners of a newly opened bookstore in Glencoe were looking to develop play readings and workshops in their store. The limited space available in the bookstore became Writers’ Theatre and gave way to a new aesthetic that has been a company hallmark ever since—-intimacy.

Very quickly, Writers’ Theatre became a welcome addition to the already vibrant Chicago arts community, garnering significant critical acclaim and quickly establishing a reputation for itself as a home for world-class art and artists. As a result, its first seasons were marked with unprecedented growth. While continuing to produce at the bookstore and in an effort to accommodate its growing audiences, Writers’ Theatre opened a second performance space in 2003—-the theater housed in the Woman’s Library Club of Glencoe.

This inviting 108-seat performance space offers the company’s trademark level of intimacy and allows a new scale of production, while affording the opportunity to expand audiences, programming and educational outreach. Because of the loyal support of its audiences and contributors, Writers’ Theatre has evolved into a sophisticated two-venue organization with award-winning productions, more than 5,700 subscribers and a $3.5 million operating budget. In 2007, Writers’ Theatre debuted nationally with its New York premiere of the acclaimed production CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. In its history, Writers’ Theatre has offered more than 81 productions, including 14 world premieres. As a direct result of the consistent artistic quality of the work, the company has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades: 55 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations, including four nods for Best Production; nine Joseph Jefferson Awards and 12 After Dark Awards, as well as numerous citations to Artistic Director Michael Halberstam for excellence and contributions to the field. Now in its 19th Season, Writers’ Theatre has enjoyed 18 seasons of operating in the black, playing to an average of 91% audience capacity and is pleased to be heralded as one of Chicago’s most respected cultural treasures.

E D U C AT I O N O U T R E A C H & A U D I E N C E E N R I C H M E N T Writers’ Theatre’s education outreach programs have served more than 30,000 students throughout Chicagoland. Our outreach programs include Write On!, an artist-in-residency program that brings students and Writers’ Theatre’s artists together to explore classroom studies and the Novel Series Study Plan, an arts and literature curriculum. The MLK Project: The Fight For Civil Rights, is the touring outreach performance that chronicles a student’s journey through the Civil Rights Movement.

Our audience enrichment programming includes From Page to Stage, a free, public collaboration between Writers’ Theatre and North Shore libraries that explores the literary and theatrical themes of our stage productions and our pre-show lectures and post-show discussions--all of which are free and open to the public.

W O R D P L AY G A L A 2 010 The annual WordPlay Gala, a spectacular evening of food, drink and merriment to benefit Writers’ Theatre, is the most important fundraising event of the year. The 2010 Gala took place on April 16th, when more than 350 of Writers’ Theatre’s closest friends and allies gathered in the Grand Ballroom of the Peninsula Hotel in downtown Chicago to celebrate the Word and the Artist. The event raised nearly $500,000 to support the Theatre. Writer’s Theatre would like to thank the following patrons who so generously endorsed the ambitions of the Theatre through donations, the purchase of table and raffle tickets, and participation in the Live Auction and Paddle Raiser.

As of April 4, 2011 when this program went to print, the 2011 gala had not yet occurred.
