D E D I C AT I O N She Loves Me is produced in memory of Guy Adkins, 1968 -2010.

Guy was a much beloved colleague, friend and artist to many in the Writers’ Theatre family.

We lost him this past May after his heroic struggle with cancer. Guy was fearless. His bravery revealed itself in his friendships, his love, his art and in the way he faced his mortality.

We set out to do She Loves Me for Guy, and although it turned out differently than we imagined, this musical about love is very much for him and very much about him.

Guy’s partner Sean Krill shares, “Guy loved She Loves Me. It was his favorite musical ever.

He loved the characters, the score and adored the book. I have no doubt his spirit—full of boundless energy, humor, joy and love—is alive and well tonight, reveling in the storytelling of She Loves Me; an earnest, clever and brilliant musical, unabashedly romantic and ultimately a very funny tale of love conquering all. The story of Guy’s life could—and I’m sure will—be told.”

SHE LOVES ME PROFILES Bernard Balbot (Arpad Laszlo) makes his Writers’ Theatre debut.

Recent Chicago credits include YEAST NATION, IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE: A RADIO PLAY (American Theater Company), and A CHRISTMAS CAROL (Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace). Other regional credits include CYRANO DE BERGERAC, OTHELLO, THE TWO GENTELMEN OF VERONA (Utah Shakespearean Festival), HAIR, ROMEO AND JULIET, ANDROCLES AND THE LION (Hangar Theater), TOUGH NUT CABARET, BOYS NEXT DOOR, GUYS AND DOLLS, TAMING OF THE SHREW and BROKEN SPOKE (Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama). In the fall of 2008, Balbot studied with the Moscow Art Theater School, portraying Trigorin in NIT’s production of THE SEAGULL. Many thanks to his family for their love and support.

Andrew Goetten (Busboy and Caroler & Understudy: Aprad Laszlo) makes his Writers’ Theatre debut.

He is a recent graduate of The Theatre School at DePaul University, where credits include AFTER THE END, HOLES, MACBETH and THE THREE MUSKETEERS.

Kevin Gudahl (Ladislav Sipos) returns to Writers’ Theatre after appearing as Reverend James Morell in A MINISTER’S WIFE, OTHELLO and THE DOCTOR’S DILEMMA. Stephanie Herman (Customer & Understudy: Amalia Balash) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut.

Chicago credits include CHESS and SWEET AND HOT: THE SONGS OF HAROLD ARLEN (Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre). She has also performed and studied with The Second City in Chicago. Herman has been onstage for over ten years and is currently studying vocal performance with Sharron Monfeli. She is grateful to Mom, Dad, Shane and Michael.

Heidi Kettenring (Ilona Ritter) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut.

(TimeLine Theatre) THE LIFE (Bohemian Theatre Ensemble) DESSA ROSE (Apple Tree Theatre) and work with Bailiwick Chicago, Lil’ Buds Theatre, Strawdog Theatre Company, Chicago Center for the Performing Arts, Silk Road Theatre Project, Chicago Dramatists, Light Opera Works, Emerald City Theatre and Hell in a Handbag Productions. Jeremy Rill (Keller and Waiter & Understudy: Steven Kodaly) makes his Writers’ Theatre debut. Chicago credits include THE MUSIC MAN (Light Opera Works), CANDIDE and ASSASSINS (Porchlight Music Theatre), JERRY SPRINGER THE OPERA for which he won a Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Supporting Actor, DENNIS DEYOUNG’S HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, PARADE (Bailiwick Repertory Theatre), PHANTOM (Theatre at the Center), CAN-CAN (Circle Theatre) and PASSION (Chicago Shakespeare Theater). Regional credits include A CHRISTMAS CAROL, ANNIE, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, SOUTH PACIFIC, CINDERELLA, PHANTOM (Wagon Wheel Theatre), WORKING, LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST and ASSASSINS (Alaska Shakespeare Festival). Rill is also an accomplished cabaret performer having been seen in numerous venues including The Park West, Voltaire, Gentry of Chicago, Wilmette Theatre, Club 3160 and Cornelia’s.

Jerry Bock (Composer) was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 23, 1928.

That was his first out-of-town tryout. Thirty years later, he and Sheldon Harnick gave birth to THE BODY BEAUTIFUL in Philadelphia. That was his fourth out-of-town tryout. In between was CATCH A STAR, a fleeting revue that, according to critic Walter Kerr, posed the question; “What do you call something between a flop and a smash?” Kerr’s answer? “A flash.” Next, Jule Styne and Tommy Valano midwifed Bock, Larry Holofcener and George Weiss into birthing MR. WONDERFUL starring Sammy Davis Jr. The title song and Too Close For Comfort are still active off springs. Bock and Harnick’s celebrated collaboration yielded five scores in seven years: THE BODY BEAUTIFUL, FIORELLO! (winner of Broadway’s triple crown: The Tony Award, The New York Critics’ Circle Award and The Pulitzer Prize in drama, the fourth musical to do so), TENDERLOIN, SHE LOVES ME (winner of Variety’s poll of critics as best musical, citing Bock and Harnick as best composer and lyricist), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (winner of nine Tony Awards, most notably the citation for best musical of the year), THE APPLE TREE and THE

ROTHSCHILDS. In addition to the 1989 silver anniversary production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (from which a major excerpt was featured in JEROME ROBBINS’ BROADWAY), a highly esteemed revival of THE ROTHSCHILDS enjoyed a successful run off-Broadway the following year. Since then, Bock and Harnick were triply honored by being inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame, receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Spirit of American Creativity Award from the Foundation for a Creative America. But the “award” that Bock holds near and dear is the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Wisconsin. It was there that he met his wife Patti, and it was there that he decided to be a composer.

Bock is a member of a number of professional guilds and associations, among which the BMI Foundation, Inc. is a membership he relishes.

As for Patti, his wife, George, their son and Portia, their daughter, Bock confesses they are his longest running hit.

Sheldon Harnick (Lyricist) was born in Chicago on April 30, 1924. He attended Portage Park Grammar School 1930-1938 and started studying violin while in grammar school. He attended Carl Schurz High School 1938-1942 and continued violin studies and music theory at the Boguslawski Musical College. During his junior and senior years at Schurz, Harnick began to write parodies, sketches and some original songs with collaborator Stanley Orzey.

In 1943 he was drafted for World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946 (Rank: T-4).

While stationed at Robins Field, Georgia, he worked as a performer and wrote songs for shows put on by the volunteer Special Service Group. Harnick was a technician in the Signal Corps, attached to the Air Force; where he created entertainment on his own time. He also, entered Yank Magazine’s parody contest and was one of five 2nd prize winners. After his discharge from the Army, he worked as a violinist in Bud Whalen’s dance band around Chicago. Harnick then enrolled at Northwestern University School of Music 1946-1949, where he earned a Bachelor of Music Degree, majoring in violin. He contributed to Northwestern’s annual student revue, the Waa-Mu Show: 1947-1953. After graduation he worked with Henry Brandon’s dance orchestra around Chicago and the midwest. When the band had to be trimmed in order to continue to book engagements, Harnick was one of several musicians let go.

He then worked with Xaviar Cugat’s orchestra on a theater date in Minneapolis but was fired after the first show. Harnick went to New York in 1950 to try to be a theatrical song writer. His first song in a Broadway show was The Boston Beguine in NEW FACES OF 1952. Over the next few years he contributed songs to the following Broadway and off-Broadway revues with music written by Harnick, David Baker or Lloyd B. ANDERSON’S ALMANAC, THE SHOESTRING REVUE, SHOESTRING 1957, KALEIDOSCOPE, THE LITTLEST REVUE and VINTAGE 1960. He also had songs in several Julius Monk Cabaret shows. Harnick wrote the lyrics for his first musical HORATIO (book by Ira Wallach and music by David Baker), produced at Margo Jone’s theater in Dallas in 1954. This show was later produced off-Broadway in 1961 under the title SMILING THE BOY FELL DEAD. Harnick worked on the theater staff of a summer resort, Green Mansions, for the full summer season in 1955, half the season of 1956 and several weeks in 1957. He received a call to write lyrics, anonymously, on THE AMAZING ADELE in 1956, but it was never produced on Broadway and SHANGRI-LA in 1956. He then wrote the lyrics for PORTOFINO in 1958. Harnick met Jerry Bock in 1956 and proceeded to collaborate on the following productions: THE BODY BEAUTIFUL (1958), a closed-circuit television industrial show Ford Tractor Show (1959), FIORELLO! (1959), TENDERLOIN (1960), MAN IN THE MOON for the Bil Baird Marionettes (1963), SHE LOVES ME (1963), TO BROADWAY WITH LOVE for The New York Fair (1964), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (1964), contributed several songs anonymously to BAKER STREET (1965), THE APPLE TREE (1966), a television musical The Canterville Ghost (1966) and THE

ROTHSCHILDS (1970). They also wrote material for the then Mayor of New York, John V. Lindsay, for his appearances before the Press Club Show INNER CIRCLE 1966 and 1970-1973. From 1958 to 1959 he worked on Industrial Shows for such firms as Buick, Esso Gas, Nabisco, Columbia Phonograph, Milliken and worked on one Ballantine Beer commercial with Jerry Bock in 1965. In 1973 Harnick worked with Mary Rodgers on: PINOCCHIO (1973) for the Bil Baird Marionettes and wrote the song William’s Doll for Marlo Thomas’s Television Special: Free to Be You and Me (1974). Coming to New York from Philadelphia after attending Temple University and serving in the US Air Force, he has been represented in New York City by the play THE WARM PENINSULA, the libretto for an operatic version of Eugene O’Neill’s DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS and the book and lyrics for a recent production of SIX WIVES at the York Theatre Company.

Michael Halberstam (Director) is the artistic director and co-founder of Writers’ Theatre.

Her frequently Joseph Jefferson nominated costumes have been seen at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Goodman Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Court Theatre, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Northwestern University, Victory Gardens Theater, Pegasus Players, Oak Park Festival Theatre, Colorado Shakespeare Theatre and many others. She recently designed BECKY’S NEW CAR, a Steve Dietz play, at Indiana Repertory Theatre. For 15 years she has designed WELCOME YULE for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Jessica Redish (Choreographer & Associate Director) makes her Writers’ Theatre debut. She is the founding artistic director of The Music Theatre Company in Highland Park, where she recently directed and choreographed THE 9/11 REPORT: A BIPARTISAN MUSICAL FANTASIA by Michael Mahler, ERIKA’S WALL as well as presentations of WHIDA PERU: RESURRECTION TANGLE and Charles L. Mee’s SUMMERTIME, which she adapted with composer/lyricist Alan Schmuckler. Redish served as movement director for the off-Broadway production of ADDING MACHINE directed by David Cromer.

She also directed and choreographed various productions for the New York Musical Theatre Festival and the New York International Fringe Festival. Redish has served as a guest director and choreographer at Roosevelt University, Hollins University and Northwestern University,

Kathryn M. Lipuma (Executive Director) joined Writers’ Theatre in March 2007. Previously, she served as Executive Director of the award-winning Signature Theatre Company in New York for nine seasons. At Signature, she produced 28 productions including award-winning revivals of Horton Foote’s THE TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, August Wilson’s SEVEN GUITARS and Lanford Wilson’s BURN THIS and worked with such acclaimed writers as Edward Albee, Lee Blessing, Horton Foote, Maria Irene Fornes, John Guare, Bill Irwin, Romulus Linney, Paula Vogel, August Wilson and Lanford Wilson. During her tenure, the

Among its numerous awards and accolades was recognition as Outstanding National Theatre of the Year and the launch of Signature Theatre Company’s successful $15 Ticket Program, which has become a national model for subsidized ticket programming.

Prior to her time at Signature, she spent six years in development with Chicago’s Goodman Theatre. Ms. Lipuma has been a guest lecturer on arts management in the graduate programs at New York University, Marymount Manhattan College and Northwestern University and has acted as management and fundraising consultant for many not-for-profit organizations. She has served on numerous arts and funding panels, including the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Philadelphia Theatre Institute for the Pew Charitable Trust, the Multi-Arts Production (MAP) Fund, supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, The Rockefeller Foundation and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Lipuma currently serves on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the League of Chicago Theatres. She is a graduate of The George Washington University in Washington, DC. A B O U T W R I T E R S ’ T H E AT R E In 1992, Artistic Director Michael Halberstam and Artistic Associate Marilyn Campbell founded Writers’ Theatre to create an environment where the written word and the nurturing of artists were the foundation of all productions. Its first venue was discovered through a mutual friend who knew that the owners of a newly opened bookstore in Glencoe were looking to develop play readings and workshops in their store. The limited space available in the bookstore became Writers’ Theatre and gave way to a new aesthetic that has been a company hallmark ever since—-intimacy.

Very quickly, Writers’ Theatre became a welcome addition to the already vibrant Chicago arts community, garnering significant critical acclaim and quickly establishing a reputation for itself as a home for world-class art and artists. As a result, its first seasons were marked with unprecedented growth. While continuing to produce at the bookstore and in an effort to accommodate its growing audiences, Writers’ Theatre opened a second performance space in 2003—-the theater housed in the Woman’s Library Club of Glencoe. Because of the loyal support of its audiences and contributors, Writers’ Theatre has evolved into a sophisticated two-venue organization with award-winning productions, more than 5,400 subscribers and a $3.4 million operating budget. In 2007, Writers’ Theatre debuted nationally with its New York premiere of the acclaimed production CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. In its history, Writers’ Theatre has offered more than 81 productions, including 14 world premieres. As a direct result of the consistent artistic quality of the work, the company has been recognized with numerous awards and accolades: 65 Joseph Jefferson Award nominations, including five nods for Best Production; nine Joseph Jefferson Awards and 12 After Dark Awards, as well as numerous citations to Artistic Director Michael Halberstam for excellence and contributions to the field. Now in its 19th Season, Writers’ Theatre has enjoyed 18 seasons of operating in the black, playing to an average of 91% audience capacity and is pleased to be heralded as one of Chicago’s most respected cultural treasures.

E D U C AT I O N O U T R E AC H & AU D I E N C E E N R I C H M E N T Writers’ Theatre’s education outreach programs have served more than 30,000 students throughout Chicagoland. Our outreach programs include Write On! and Novel Series Study Plan, which are artist-in-residency programs that bring students and Writers’ Theatre’s artists together to explore classroom studies and The MLK Project: The Fight For Civil Rights, a touring outreach performance that chronicles a student’s journey through the Civil Rights Movement.

Our audience enrichment programming includes From Page to Stage, a free, public collaboration between Writers’ Theatre and North Shore libraries that explores the literary and theatrical themes of our stage productions and our pre-show lectures and post-show discussions--all of which are free and open to the public.

A B O U T T H E WO M A N ’ S L I B R A R Y C L U B O F G L E N C O E The Woman’s Library Club of Glencoe, the building that currently houses the Writers’ Theatre 108-seat venue, was the third women’s club to be formed in Illinois and the 61st in the entire country. Organized in 1872 for “social and intellectual improvement,” the Club enlarged its purpose in 1928 “to promote the welfare of the community.” In 1947, its purpose was again enlarged and revised “to promote philanthropic and intellectual interests and the welfare of the community.” The Club chose its name because it was designed to use funds paid by the members to form the nucleus of a library for Glencoe. The first Clubhouse, at 654 Greenleaf Avenue, was used from 1906 until 1928. The present Clubhouse was opened on October 5, 1938.

The 2010 Gala took place on April 16th, when more than 350 of Writers’ Theatre’s closest friends and allies gathered in the Grand Ballroom of the Peninsula Hotel in downtown Chicago to celebrate the Word and the Artist. The event raised nearly $500,000 to support the Theatre.
