Peter bernstein Biogr aphY Peter Bernstein New York guitarist Peter Bernstein (b. 1967) has been an integral part of the world jazz scene since 1989. He has been sought out by musicians from all generations -- touring with legendary players such as Jimmy Cobb, Lou Donaldson, Bobby Hutcherson, Lee Konitz, Sonny Rollins, and Dr. Lonnie Smith and jazz stars of today such as Eric Alexander, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Nicholas Payton, and Joshua Redman. His recognizable guitar voice graces over a hundred recordings.

As a leader, Bernstein has recorded six highly regarded albums, displaying not only his masterful interpretations of standards, but also his inventive and lyrical compositions. His latest project, Monk (Criss Cross), shows Bernstein’s deep understanding of the complexities of Thelonious Monk’s music, while never becoming overshadowed by Monk’s powerful personality. Bernstein also has taught at the Julliard School, Berklee College of Music, North Texas State University, the New School Jazz Program, and the Jazz Conservatory in Amsterdam.

Guitar legend Jim Hall has said that Bernstein “is the most impressive young guitarist I’ve heard... He plays the best of them all for swing, logic, feel and taste, and has paid attention to the past as well as the future.”

Wisconsin Conservatory of Music

Prometheus Trio biogr aphies Timothy Klabunde, violin WCM faculty member since 2005. Mr. Klabunde is the Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has been an orchestra member since 1980. He was a violin and chamber music student of Leonard Sorkin, Abram Loft, Bernard Zaslav and George Sopkin (the Fine Arts Quartet) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Mr. Klabunde has served as Concertmaster for the Milwaukee Ballet and Milwaukee Civic Orchestras and has appeared as violin soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra and the Manitowoc Symphony.

Chamber music appearances have included the Festival de Belles Artes in San Miguel, Mexico, live on WFMT Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Series, WPR broadcasts from Madison’s Elvejem and Chazen Art Museum and the Fourth Annual International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France. This year includes concerts at the Washington Island Music Festival and as a member of the Prometheus Trio at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. Mr. Klabunde is an adjunct instructor of violin and a member of the Clarus piano trio at Cardinal Stritch University.

Scott Tisdel, cello WCM faculty member since 2000. Associate Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Symphony, has also served as Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra since his arrival in Milwaukee in 1987, and has appeared as soloist with both ensembles, as well as with the Waukesha and Manitowoc Symphonies and the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra. Prior to his arrival in Milwaukee, Mr. Tisdel served as Principal Cello of the Florida Orchestra in Tampa and was a member of both the Oakland and San Jose Symphony Orchestras in California. In addition to being the founding cellist of the Prometheus Trio, he was a founding member of the Conservatory’s Paganini Trio and the Strings in the Mountains Chamber Music Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Mr. Tisdel has recorded for Arundax, CRI, Fleur de Son, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Oris Records.

Stefanie Jacob, pianist WCM faculty member since 1987. Stefanie Jacob made her solo debut with the Boston Pops at age 17 and her Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1984. An avid chamber musician, she was twice awarded second prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and was awarded Indiana University’s Leo Weiner Prize for Chamber Music.

Ms. Jacob has performed as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra and the Waukesha and Manitowoc Symphonies, and has appeared as a collaborating artist on Milwaukee’s Artist Series at the Pabst and WFMT-Chicago’s nationally broadcast Dame Myra Hess Series. She has recorded for the Arundax, CRI, Fleur de Son and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music labels. A graduate of Harvard and Indiana Universities, Ms. Jacob taught at the University of Tampa from 1985 to 1987, and since then at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, receiving an award for Excellence in Studio Teaching from the Milwaukee Civic Music Association in 2007. In addition to her work with the Prometheus Trio, she also performs as the Duo Coriolan with husband Scott, and as the Duo Cosi with violinist Susan Waterbury.

m at t h e w a n n i n B i o g r a p h Y Matthew Annin, french horn Matthew Annin is currently principal horn of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Matthew was previously a member of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, where he performed on several tours with the CSO, including tours to Japan and Carnegie Hall, in addition to performing on several orchestral recordings. Matthew has also been a member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and the Louisville Orchestra. He has also performed with the Saint Louis Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra, Peninsula Music Festival, Chautauqua Symphony, and Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. Matthew was a fellow at the New World Symphony, Tanglewood Music Center, and Music Academy of the West, where he appeared as soloist with the Music Academy Festival Orchestra.

Matthew received a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. An avid runner, Matthew attempts to run over 1,000 miles each year. Matthew enjoys spending time with his wife, Christine, and spoiling their cat, Zoe.

Eric Jacobson, trumpet WCM faculty member since 2008. Eric Jacobson is a professional trumpet player, clinician, composer and private instructor residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Eric freelances in the Milwaukee and Chicago area playing in groups such as Luis Diaz Quintet, D’CalleSon, De La Buena, Kings Go Forth, Tristan Royalty Squad, Orquesta Tumbao, We Six and leading his own jazz Quintet. Eric has been fortunate to experience performances and lessons with well-known artists, such as Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, Jim Rotondi, Tim Hagans,Tito Puente Jr., Joan Rivers, Eric Benet, Mayer Hawthorne, Robert Randolph and Wynton Marsalis.

Eric was recently recognized in Jazzscope magazine By David Hoffman as having “[a] gorgeous round sound on both the trumpet and flugelhorn” and being “on his way to being a jazz giant.”

In 2001 Eric released his debut jazz CD entitled Inspiration which features some of Milwaukee’s best jazz musicians as well as New York trumpet sensation Brian Lynch. Eric released his second album in 2011 called Two A.M. Live at the Jazz Estate and his third album will be released in Fall 2012, featuring Brian lynch and piano legend Barry Velleman. Eric has been busy performing and touring around the world the past two years with Soul band Kings Go Forth featured in “Time” as being 2011’s best Soul band.

Eric Schoor, tenor saxophone WCM faculty member since 2012. Saxophonist Eric Schoor, a native of Southeastern Wisconsin, currently performs extensively throughout the Milwaukee area. Eric has had the good fortune of working with many of the area’s most accomplished jazz artists. He is currently a student at 12

UWMilwaukee pursuing two B.F.A.s (Jazz Studies and Multiple Woodwinds). Valuing diversity in music, Eric performs in a variety of styles from bebop to classical to pit orchestras to funk/ rock. Eric can be heard regularly in Milwaukee’s jazz venues such as The Jazz Estate and Caroline’s as well as Thursdays at O’Donoghue’s with Gary Christiansen’s All-Star SUPERband.

Paul Silbergleit, guitar WCM faculty member since 1996. B.A., Oberlin College. An accomplished jazz composer as well as performer, Mr. Silbergleit has played clubs, concert halls, and festivals throughout the area as both a leader and a sideman. He has appeared with Jack McDuff, Jon Faddis, Richie Cole, Tierney Sutton, Melvin Rhyne, Brian Lynch, David Hazeltine, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, among others. Both his 1996 debut CD Silberglicity (on which other Conservatory faculty members are featured) and his 2003 release, My New Attitude, have made it onto the jazz charts with nationwide airplay, and he can also be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Mr. Silbergleit also teaches at Cardinal Stritch University, and is the co-author of 100 Jazz Lessons in Hal Leonard’s Guitar Lessons Goldmine series, as well as a featured instructor in the their Guitar Licks Goldmine DVD series. *Mark Davis, piano WCM faculty member since 1992. B.S., with honors, Skidmore College. Mr. Davis is Chair of the Jazz Institute and a member of the Conservatory’s We Six. His WCM instructors included Adelaide Banaszynski and David Hazeltine. Later studies included work with jazz legend Barry Harris. He has performed with many jazz luminaries, including Jimmy Heath, Charles McPherson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, and Frank Morgan. He is also on the faculty of Wisconsin Lutheran College, Cardinal Stritch University and Alverno College. Mr. Davis can be heard on the We Six CD Bird Say. *Jeff Hamann, bass WCM faculty member since 1998. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six jazz sextet, Mr. Hamann attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, winning first place in the Jazz Studies Scholarship competition four years in a row. He has worked as a clinician and jazz festival judge in the Milwaukee, Kenosha and Waukesha public schools as well as at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison and UW-Green Bay. Performing with such well-known artists as Frank Morgan, Marlena Shaw, Steve Allen, and Eric Alexander, he has toured throughout the Midwest and has appeared at Jazz Yantra in Bombay, India. Jeff is also the bassist on Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know show, airing Saturdays on Wisconsin Public Radio and broadcast nationally on NPR stations. He can be heard on the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. *David Bayles, drums WCM faculty member since 1997. B.F.A. Music Education UW-Milwaukee. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six, Mr. Bayles has worked with such jazz artists as Slide Hampton, Barry Harris, David Hazeltine, Vincent Herring, Brian Lynch, Jack McDuff, Bob Mintzer, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Jim Pugh, Melvin Rhyne, and Ernie Watts. Dave performs at jazz clubs and music festivals throughout the Midwest. Recording credits include the Luis Diaz Quintet (On the Edge), the Curt Hanrahan Quintet (Hang Time), the Juli Wood Quintet (Movin’ and Groovin’) We Six CD (Bird Say), Steve Wiest (Excalibur), Doug Lawrence (Kid’s Are Pretty People). Dave’s orchestral credits include timpani with the Rome Festival Orchestra and percussion with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. As a clinician for Yamaha Music Corporation and Zildjian Cymbals, he travels and teaches widely throughout the U.S. and Canada. philomusica biogr aphies Jeanyi Kim, violin Jeanyi Kim is the Associate Concertmaster (Third Chair) of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra.

As an orchestral musician, the Toronto native has performed in illustrious venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Barbican Centre, Salle Pleyel and the Concertgebouw. She has been a Guest Assistant Leader of the London Symphony Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. In 2008, Kim, along with pianist Daniel del Pino, recorded for a Boosey & Hawkes book/CD compilation entitled, 10 Violin Solos from the Masters. The recipient of the Yale Bach Society Award and the Stuart Walker Memorial Scholarship, Kim holds a doctorate degree from Yale University, from which she also earned her MMA, MM, and BA degrees. Her major teachers include Erick Friedman, Kyung Yu, Berl Senofsky and Rebecca Henry. Dr. Kim has been a faculty member of the Elm City ChamberFest and the Eleazar de Carvalho Festival in Brazil.

Alexander Mandl, violin Brazilian violinist and conductor, Alexander Mandl, maintains a versatile career as soloist, conductor, chamber and orchestra musician, and educator. Mandl has performed worldwide at renowned halls, including Alice Tully, the Memorial of Latin America, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, and Carnegie Music Hall. As a soloist and orchestra musician, he has collaborated with notable conductors, such as Eleazar de Carvalho, Gunther Herbig, Robert Shaw, and Krzysztof Penderecki. A dedicated and passionate chamber musician, Mandl has collaborated with eminent artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Jian Wang, Mathieu Dufour, Erick Friedman, Sidney Harth, Aldo Parisot, and Caio pagano. He is a founding member of the Philomusica Quartet, and Quintessence Piano Quintet, which performs in the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series, with live broadcast on WFMT, Chicago. Mandl is the Concertmaster of the Kenosha Symphony and the Racine Symphony, and Assistant Concertmaster of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra.

Conducting posts include the Elm City ChamberFest orchestra, the Lakeshore Youth Philharmonic, and guest of the Paraiba Symphony in Brazil. A recipient of the prestigious Ivan Galamian, Andrew Carnegie Tradition, and the Yale Alumni awards, Mandl serves on the faculties of the UW-Parkside, Wisconsin Lutheran College, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, and various festivals including the Sunflower Music Festival. In 2002, Mandl recorded for CD Baby’s Heavenly Lullabies dedicated to the orphans of 9/11, produced in New York City, and J.S. Bach’s E major concerto with the UFPB Chamber Orchestra (Brazil) under the direction of maestro Sidney Harth. A graduate of Yale University, Carnegie Mellon, and UW-Madison, Dr. Mandl has recently edited Leopoldo Miguez’s Violin Sonata Op. 14 and transcribed W. Kilar’s Orawa for Aldo Parisot and the Yale Cellos.

Nathan Hackett, viola Violist Nathan Hackett is a proud member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. During the 2007-08 season, he served as its Co-Assistant Principal violist. He is Principal violist of both the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra. Also very active as a chamber musician, Mr. Hackett performs with many of Milwaukee’s leading musicians in recital series for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, Wisconsin Lutheran College and most recently Chamber Music Milwaukee, with University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee faculty and MSO musicians. While a student at UWM, Mr. Hackett studied viola with Jerry Horner and chamber music with members of the Fine Arts Quartet. Other influential teachers have been Peter Slowik and Burton Kaplan.

Adrien Zitoun, cello Cellist Adrien Zitoun joined the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in 2001. That year, as a member of the Eusia String Quartet, he was awarded the Gold medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. In his native land of France, Mr. Zitoun studied musicology at the University of Sorbonne in Paris for one year, before being accepted into the National Superior Conservatory of Music in Lyon, where he studied cello with Yvan Chiffoleau. At this time, he also played with the Ensemble Orchestral de Mâcon and Symphony Orchestra of Lyon-Villerbanne and taught at the Privas and Brignais School of Music. In 1996, he obtained scholarships that enabled him to continue his music studies in the United States. Here, Mr. Zitoun earned his Artist Diploma and a Masters of Music from Indiana University, where he studied with Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi and Janós Starker. An active teacher, Mr. Zitoun is on the faculty at Wisconsin Lutheran College, and has a handful of dedicated private students.

Eli K alm an Biogr aphy Eli Kalman, piano Romanian-born pianist Eli Kalman has performed extensively in Romania, Israel, Germany, Hungary, Japan, United States and Canada. Hailing from Romania and Israel, he was the recipient of the Paul Collins Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship for Excellence at UW-Madison. His lifelong passion for chamber music has been featured in performances at the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, “San Francisco Performances”, “Tuesday Evening Concert Series” in Virginia, at the Sylvia Adalman Artist Recital Series at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore, on the Emmanuel Music-Schumann Chamber Series in Boston, the Connoisseur Series at Wichita State University, Myra Hess Series in Chicago and many other venues. He was an enthusiastic artist-in-residence at the Chamber Music Festival at Banff, Canada and for five years a guest artist at the Token Creek Festival. Recent solo and chamber appearances have also featured him as a soloist with the Water City Chamber Orchestra and on numerous live broadcast recitals on “Sunday Afternoon Live from the Chazen” on WPR and from WFMT Chicago. Earlier in 2013 he performed with his regular partner, cellist Parry Karp from the Pro Arte Quartet the Integrale of Beethoven’s works for Piano and Cello at Farley’s House of Pianos Series in Madison.

As a recording artist, he offers the works for solo piano and cello and piano by Erwin Junger (2001) and Robert Schumann’s Sonatas for Violin and Piano with violinist Rose Mary Harbison (2006). His latest recording entitled “The Jewish Soul” is with cellist Amit Peled from the Peabody Institute and it was released on Centaur Records in 2009.

Dr. Kalman spends his summer as piano faculty at the Young Artist Seminars at Rocky Ridge Music Center in Colorado where he shares with many students his passion for music with the greatness of a unique natural setting at 9000 feet altitude. Since 2006 he serves as Professor of Piano at University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. Prior to his appointment at UW-Oshkosh he has been on the piano faculty at the Center of Arts, Mizra and the association “Maestro” based in Israel and prior on the faculty at the Lyceum of Arts, Baia Mare in Romania.

festive soiree with robin pluer biogr aphies Robin Pluer, voice WCM faculty member since 2004. Ms. Pluer is a perennial WAMI Award winner as well as the Shepherd Express’ Best Female Vocalist. She has composed and performed music with Paul Cebar and John Sieger. With Juli Wood, Connie Grauer and Kim Zick (Mrs. Fun) she created The Rhythm Club to perform an eclectic array of jazz, pop, R&B and French songs. Robin collaborated with Peter Buffett, recording a song for his album, Songs from an East Side Attic. Robin combines vintage French chansons from the 20s, 30s and 40s with contemporary songs which she performs each year at Bastille Days in Milwaukee. Robin studied with Martha Artis (at WCM), Jessie Hauck, and Sylvie Frere. She has also studied at L’Alliance Francaise of Manhattan and at UWM. Juli Wood, tenor saxophone Wood has been blessed with the opportunity to make music her passion and her life for the last 25 years. Juli plays alto, tenor, and baritone saxes, and she loves to sing. She has been lucky enough to play with some great jazz veterans including Melvin Rhyne, Earma Thompson, Jodie Christian, Ira Sullivan, Barry Harris. She has entertained around the world at jazz festivals and clubs. A few of her favorites were: Skansen Jazz and Blues fest in Stockholm; Pori Jazz in Finland; Bent J’s club in Aarhus, Denmark; Elo Jazz and Blues in Oulu, Finland; Arlandia Jazz fest on Aland Islands; Paappa’s Music Pub in Tampere and Storyville Jazz Club in Helsinki. Stateside she has played extensively throughout the midwest. Her home is now in Chicago where she has led her own groups at Andy’s, Green Mill, Green Dolphin St., Pete Miller’s, and Katerina’s.

Juli has been featured at the Chicago Jazz Fest in her own quintet with Mel Rhyne; with Jeru, a Gerry Mulligan tribute; and with an all female jazz band, SHE. Juli played the 2010 Chicago Jazz fest with veteran Chicago jazz pianist, Jodie Christian. She has three CD’s out to date, the first one featuring Melvin Rhyne on the organ called Movin’ and Groovin’ The Juli Wood Quintet,

For the past twenty years Juli has led a jazz quartet for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s ACE program (Arts and Cultural Education), which performs for third graders in schools throughout the area. Juli is also a member of the Prohibition Orchestra.

Stas Venglevski, accordion His artistry, dazzling technical command, and sensitivity have brought Stanislav “Stas” Venglevski, a native of the Republic of Moldova, increasing acclaim as a virtuoso of the bayan. A two-time first prize winner of Bayan competition in the Republic of Moldova, Stas is a graduate of the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow where he received his Masters Degree in Music under the tutelage of the famed Russian Bayanist, Friedrich Lips. In 1992 he immigrated to the United States. Stas is an accordionist, a musician, an arranger, an entertainer, and a teacher. Stas’ repertoire includes his original compositions, a broad range of classical, contemporary and ethnic music. He has toured extensively as a soloist throughout the former Soviet Union, Canada, Europe, and the United States, including numerous performances with Doc Severinsen, Steve Allen and with Garrison Keillor on the Prairie Home Companion radio show. Additionally, he has performed with symphony orchestras throughout the United States. He performed the world premiere of Concerto No. 2 by Anthony Galla-Rini and also the world premiere of “Bayan and Beyond,” composed for Stas by Dan Lawitts. He is a regular participant the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community Education Program (ACE); has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; has done television commercials and performed in theater productions; produced numerous recordings including a transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite for Bayan as well as one of original compositions. He has published several books of original compositions. Stas founded Accordion XXI Century Series in 2010 so that the Midwest audiences can experience the amazing range of the accordion and bayan by bringing artists from all over the world. In a concert setting, these gifted musicians share their skills and cultures to provide the audience with a unique musical experience.

Peter Roller, guitar Peter Roller has a PhD in Ethnomusicology from UW-Madison and he is Associate Professor and Chair of the Music Dept at Alverno College. Roller has a book being readied for publication

by History Press on Milwaukee Garage Bands. Based on oral histories about amateur Rock groups from the mid 1950s through the early 2000s, it shows the value of such music-making in the neighborhoods of anytowns like Milwaukee with each generation. Roller has performed with Robin since they both were in Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans in the late 80s. He has also performed and recorded with bluesman Steve Cohen, black gospel quartet The Masonic Wonders, and ukulele star Lil Rev. Roller’s solo slide guitar piece “Rancho Mirage” was included on the best-selling compilation Masters of Acoustic Guitar (Narada) and his first full length CD of original guitar music, Blue Fog, was released in 2010.

Connie Grauer, piano and vocals, and Kim Zick, drums (MRS. FUN) MRS.FUN plays nu jazz. Complex, sophisticated and adventurous, their music is a unique blend of off-center jazz, ultra-funk, spoken word rap, and their own brand of neo-cabaret. Intelligent lyrics, stellar musicianship and a dynamic stage presence are hallmarks of their music. The MRS. FUN sound is derived from Connie Grauer’s funky bass-driven keyboard playing, combined with Kim Zick’s skillful in-the-pocket drumming. “Grauer is a piano player with few equals whose drive and energy spills across the stage and into the audience like nitrous oxide. She’s got a left hand that doesn’t quit, the mark of any great pianist, and a right hand with limitless boundaries.” Zick holds court as a “heart-stopping drummer” whose “grooves get so far out, most people need a map to get back.” Voted Best Contemporary Jazz Group by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry(WAMI) three consecutive years, Grauer and Zick have also received WAMI awards for Best Instrumentalist: keyboards and drums. Grauer has also received awards for Best Female Vocalist and Best Stage Entertainer.
