A MESSAGE FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR We are so thrilled that Josh’s first show is making its Wisconsin premiere at Skylight since he had our company in mind while writing Adding Machine. Josh spent a lot of time here during his high school and college years. We are delighted for his success not only with Adding Machine, but with his second show, A Minister’s Wife, which runs through June 12 at Lincoln Center in New York City.

We would like to thank the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for its generous support of Adding Machine. We were so honored to learn that we were recipients this year and we are pleased that the NEA values our commitment to supporting new works and to providing educational opportunities in conjunction with this production. We would also like to thank our Clarion Society, whose multi-year commitments help make our future secure.

We have made great progress on our goal to match the $150,000 Challenge Fund that was created by several generous donors this year. With less than $16,000 left to go, we are within reach our goal. Your new or additional gift will help us complete the challenge by the end of our fiscal year on June 30th.

It has been a wonderful season at Skylight with six productions of which we are extremely proud. Finally, in April we were saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of a longtime Skylight friend, Dr. Sydney Johnson, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, and his entire family. Dr. Johnson supported Skylight in so many ways, as Board member, donor, subscriber and even as unofficial photographer. He will be remembered and sadly missed.

Amy S. Jensen and Bill Theisen A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E W R I T E R – J O S H S C H M I D T In 1992, I saw my very first theatrical production, Candide, at Skylight’s Jefferson Street space. I was dragged there by my piano teacher Susan Sonneborn. Contrary to my expectations, the event made quite an impression on me. I was captivated and surprised by how the actors emerged from all parts of the house, performing right in front of my seat at times. Of course, I was thrilled with the virtuosic little orchestra crammed into a closet space in front of the tiny stage. One can pinpoint my interest in pursuing a career in the arts to this very moment.

In 1996, Ray Jivoff and Tony Clements hired me to accompany them for their cabaret The Ray and Tony Dog and Pony Show. Soon after, Richard Carsey hired me to be assistant musical director and synth programmer on Wings. These two projects represent my first two professional gigs as a musician. For the early part of my career, Skylight was my artistic home outside of my music composition/ technology studies at UWM with Yehuda Yannay and Jon Welstead. I will never forget that, or how those experiences changed my life.

Before I knew it, I found myself fully immersed in all that was music and performing arts in this city. I was playing gigs with two bands, Clamnation and Mississippi Cactus. I was curating and performing in two new music concert series at UWM. I landed composition/sound design gigs with theatre companies like Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre and Milwaukee Shakespeare in addition to large scale composition work with Wild 2 Skylight Opera Theatre

Space Dance Company and Foothold Dance Theatre. My career radiates outwardly in concentric circles from my formative experiences in Milwaukee.

Back at Skylight, I think of three individuals who influenced my life profoundly as a musician, even though my technical abilities fall far short of theirs. Playing gigs over the years with Jamie Johns, Mike Lorenz, and especially Richard Carsey became an education in and of itself. I remain in awe of what could be accomplished with just those three guys playing - 2 pianos and percussion. When the time came to actually add my two cents to the continuum of musical theatre, this was the model that I hung my hat on. The music and orchestrations for Adding Machine, in all their sound and fury, are a direct consequence to those three guys and what they are capable of.

People tell me that the music for this is hard. I respond to that in two ways. First - yes it’s hard. Second - it is all possible. What made the Jefferson Street space so magical is that the impossible was rendered possible on a nightly basis. When the original creative team received the task of adapting Elmer Rice’s titanic play Adding Machine into a technically limited 140 seat elementary school theatre in Evanston, IL (Next Theatre), we were being asked to do the impossible just like those teams who inhabited that Skylight space of old. Night after night, we had to scale the impossible mountain without gimmicks, bells, or whistles. Just that alone seemed to be worth the price of admission. Every night - all involved rose to the occasion. In my mind, there is nothing more thrilling to witness; there is nothing more invigorating, more human than an entire company tackling the task of making the complexity of the human condition that Rice aspired to communicate, clear an engaging for everyone despite all odds.

A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R – K ATE B U C K L E Y The composer Josh Schmidt and the librettist and lyricist Jason Loewith, in their musical version of Elmer Rice’s The Adding Machine, have been faithful to Rice’s description of the expressionistic style of his original work: “We discard objective reality and seek to express the character in terms of his own inner life.” In addition, Schmidt and Loewith have created a musical that flirts with naturalism while swimming in expressionism, and even surprises us with touches of absurdism. The result is a complex and revealing piece of art.

Schmidt and Loewith’s combination of expressionist, naturalistic and absurdist techniques allows us to experience the misery and the grim fate of a man who has been replaced by a machine after 25 years on the job. Even though the dehumanization of the industrial age did crush many a soul, Loewith and Schmidt have given Mr. Zero three important opportunities to avoid his fate; when he is fired, before his execution, and in the afterlife. But he cannot change. He misses his last chance at romance and salvation, and he continues his journey through the never-ending misery of humanness. And yet, we feel a strange, unsettling empathy for this man.

Josh Schmidt’s score is an unconventional marvel, illustrating the unrelenting tediousness of the characters’ lives. It is passionate and demanding as it gives voice to anger, resignation, and hope. It is a musical vocabulary that is born of popular song, gospel, and ragtime influences. The music and lyrics are a world away from the typically sweet, contemporary musicals we are used to hearing.

The entire work has a stark, tension-filled energy. The first time I heard this music, I was enthralled by its surprises. I hope it will do the same for you.

WHO’S WHO Parker Cristan (Mr. One) – Parker is thrilled to be returning to Skylight Opera Theatre!

Previous Skylight performances include West Side Story, The Most Happy Fella, and The Producers.

Other favorites include La Cage Aux Folles (as various Ca Gelles) in Milwaukee, St. Louis and Miami; Guys and Dolls (as Sky Masterson); Grand Hotel (as The Baron); and Assasins (as John Wilkes Boothe) as well as many other local and regional shows. On the small screen, Parker has appeared on Dexter, The Chicago Code, Pleading Guilty, and Tom Holland’s Driven. On the big screen Parker can be seen in Taz Salini’s Gringo Wedding as well as South Beach Dreams. Parker has served as Cruise/Entertainment Director for three major cruise lines based out of Miami, New York and Seattle, but is so grateful to be back home in Milwaukee.

Chris Krasovich (Mrs. One) – Apart from the occasional on-demand performance, Chris Krasovich has been off the boards and in the ‘burbs for the last five years raising two beautiful children.

Before that time she enjoyed performing with this and many wonderful companies in the area, including M&W, In Tandem Theater, and Broadway Baby Dinner Theater. She has been seen most recently in performances for the Sunset Playhouse’s Musical Mainstage cabaret series. Favorite roles include Jennifer in I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change; Lilly/Kate and Lois/Bianca in Kiss Me Kate (several years apart); and Wanda Kazlakowski in A Cudahy Carolers Christmas (originated role; original cast recording). She is thrilled to be back at the glorious Cabot Theatre for this amazing show.

Jonathan Stewart (Mr. Two) – Jonathan was last seen at Skylight in The Barber of Seville. Other Skylight appearances include La Boheme, White Christmas, Patience and Gianni Schicchi. Last fall he had the great pleasure of appearing as Joseph Horner in the world-premiere reading of Fortuna the Time Bender vs.

The Schoolgirls of Doom with Milwaukee Opera Theatre. Favorite roles include Rocky in Damn Yankees, Sam in Street Scene, Rudy in The Christmas Schooner, and Mr. Erlansson in A Little Night Music.

Toni Fletcher (Mrs. Two) – Toni is excited to be a part of the Milwaukee debut of Adding Machine, and to be back working with Skylight Opera Theatre. Toni has performed in past productions at Skylight including: Pirates of Penzance, Man of LaMancha and Animal Crackers.

She has also performed with such local theatres as Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, First Stage Children’s Theatre, Milwaukee Shakespeare, and BunnyGumbo. Toni is thrilled to be jumping back into the role of Mrs. Two after first playing her with Next Theatre’s production of Adding Machine. You can see Toni next season with BunnyGumbo’s Combat Theatre.

Niffer Clarke (Daisy)* – Niffer appeared in the original off-Broadway production of Adding Machine, (Mrs. One and Mrs. Zero understudy) and is thrilled to now be playing the role of Daisy. Next season at Skylight he will appear in Things That Go Ding! Favorite directing projects include Hair at the Sunset Playhouse; The Sum of Us for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre; An Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boufe for Bialystock and Bloom; West Side Story at UW-Milwaukee and Ragtime at Milwaukee High School of the Arts.

Liz Pazik (Mrs. Zero)* – Liz is happy to be back on the Skylight stage and to be working with colleagues (and friends) Kate Buckley and Ray Jivoff. She was last seen here as Katisha in The Mikado in the inaugural season of this beautiful theatre. Liz is a proud, long-time member of Actors Equity Association and has played everything

from a trumpet playing stripper to a country singing Nun! She originated the role of Mrs. Fezziwig in the National tour of Scrooge, The Musical! starring Richard Chamberlain. Other favorite credits include: Miss Tweed (Jeff nominated performance) in Something’s Afoot!; “Crazy” Aunt Harriet in The Man Who Came to Dinner; Miss Shields in A Christmas Story; Maggie in 42nd Street; Nettie in Carousel; Mahiette in Dennis De Young’s Hunchback; Miss Gulch/Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz; Angela Bodine in Honky Tonk Angels, Truvy in Steel Magnolias. She has performed at a variety of regional theatres including Drury Lane Theatres, Marriott Lincolnshire, Peninsula Players, TATC, Bailiwick and Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. She returns to “Chicago Shakes” this summer in a new musical version of Pinocchio and in the fall will be happily performing yet another nun in The Sound of Music at Drury Lane Oakbrook Theatre.

Steve Koehler (Boss)* – Steve’s Skylight credits include: Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Orin Scrivello in Little Shop of Horrors and Caleb in The Spitfire Grill. Other on-stage credits include: Lloyd in Guys on Ice with The Milwaukee Repertory Theatre and AFT; Howie in Rabbit Hole with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Steve teaches physics and acting at Milwaukee High School of the Arts. He and his wife Julie-Honey have been blessed with two boys, Alexander Steven (16) and Austin Max (13).

Rick Pendzich (Shrdlu) – Rick makes his second appearance with Skylight after playing Mark Cohen in last season’s rock opera, RENT (for which he received the Lee Doherty Ross Debut Artist Award.) He has also had the pleasure of working with Milwaukee Skylight Opera Theatre 7

Kate Buckley (Stage Director) – Ms. Buckley is pleased to be back in Milwaukee for her first musical at Skylight. Her theatre credits include productions at The Goodman Theatre, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespearean Festival, American Players Theatre, Kansas City Repertory, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Clarence Brown Theatre, Madison Repertory, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Writers Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, and Next Theatre, where she served as artistic director for four years. Formerly a founding member of Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, she is currently a professor at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Kate has been honored by the Joseph Jefferson Committee on numerous occasions, has received two After Dark Awards for Outstanding Direction, a Distinguished Alumni Award Aurora University and Creative Research Award from the University of Tennessee.

Joe Cerqua (Music Director) – Joe is a freelance composer, sound designer, vocalist, and producer. He is thrilled to be making his debut with Skylight Opera Theatre. Recent projects include composing and designing sound for Pinocchio at Deaf West in Los Angeles, Sense and Sensibility at Northlight Theatre, Going to St. Ives at Forward Theatre, The Circle at American Players Theatre, In The Next Room at Forward Theatre, Emma at the Cleveland Playhouse, Bus Stop at Kansas City Rep, and compositions and performances with the Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre. Joe has composed music and designed sound for over 200 productions around the nation including productions for Steppenwolf Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, Oregon 8 Skylight Opera Theatre

Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre, The Mark Taper Forum, Court Theatre, The Alliance, BAM, The English Speaking Theatre of Vienna, National Jewish Theatre, and Northlight Theatre to name a few. His work has been “Jeff” recognized 11 times. He is the recipient of 5 After Dark Awards and an Ostrander Award. His scores and sound designs for Homebody/Kabul, SideMan, Broken Glass, How I Learned to Drive, and Master Class have all enjoyed national tours. He is the Supervising Producer for the Music Department at Columbia College Chicago and the Producing Director/Composer in Residence for the Cerqua Rivera Dance Theatre, an award winning and critically acclaimed 13-piece jazz orchestra and 12 member dance company. Future projects include composition and sound design for The Taming of the Shrew at American Players Theatre and concerts with Cerqua Rivera.

Jeremy Ramey (Music Director) – Jeremy is a concert pianist, conductor and Jeff nominated music director based in Chicago. Some of his favorite music directing projects include Altar Boys at Downtown Drury Lane, Hats! with Grammy award winner Melissa Manchester and Tony nominated director Lynn Taylor-Corbett, Forever Plaid at Drury Lane Oakbrook and C’est la Vie at Light Opera Works. Jeremy is proud to have worked on and music directed the first production of Adding Machine in 2007 at Next Theatre. He received his training in piano performance at Rhodes College, Northwestern University and The Juilliard School of Music. He has taught at Northwestern University, Columbia College, Loyola University and the University of Memphis. He is also the music director at Unity Church on the Northshore. Jeremy is excited to be a part of Skylight’s production of Adding Machine and especially thanks Josh Schmidt and Jason Loewith for writing such a remarkable piece.

Ruben Piirainen (Assistant Music Director) – Adding Machine is Ruben’s third Skylight production, having worked previously on H.M.S Pinafore and Cosi fan tutte. He holds degrees in piano performance from Lawrence University and Bowling Green State University. He has worked with numerous local groups including Sunset Playhouse, Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, Present Music, Festival City Symphony, Waukesha Civic Theatre, Music by the Lake, and many top high school theatre programs. Singers around the world use his extensive recordings for Hal Leonard’s Singer’s Musical Theatre Anthology and Disney Songs series. He has performed in over 100 recitals across the country and made his international debut at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Holly Payne (Costume Designer) – Currently the costume director at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Holly graduated with an M.F.A. in costume design and technology from the University of Arkansas. She has designed elsewhere at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Shakespeare, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, University of Tulsa, American Players Theatre, Florentine Opera, First Stage Children’sTheater and Theatre Squared in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Some of her favorite designs have been RENT here at Skylight, Waiting for Godot at APT and The Bombitty of Errors at the Milwaukee Rep. Thanks to Skylight for this opportunity and to the costume shop for all their great work. Much love to ACB for being a fantastic partner.

Nathan Stuber (Set Designer) – Adding Machine is the first design Nathan has produced for Skylight.

Currently based in Spring Green, Nathan is the resident Assistant Technical Director for American Players Theatre and has been known to design scenery for his friends at APT, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Next Act and Bialystock and Bloom.

Gary Ellis (Sound Designer) – Gary Ellis is serving in his fourth year as Skylight’s audio visual supervisor and has been an audio engineer in theatre for over 15 years. He began his career as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, but got hooked on theatre after years of watching performances at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He was so happy to be a part of Skylight’s production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris earlier this season and RENT last season. Other shows he has mixed include White Christmas, The Spitfire Grill, The Producers, Blues In The Night, Sunday In The Park With George, Side Show, Dames At Sea and Violet. Gary studied technical theatre at San Francisco State University. Previously, he worked at The Santa Fe Opera, Theatreworks in Palo Alto, California and Summer Repertory Theatre in Santa Rosa, California.

Jason Fassl (Lighting Designer)** – This production marks Jason’s ninth lighting design for Skylight, including, Madame Butterfly, Little Shop of Horrors, RENT and Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris.

Other designs this season include productions for the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Ballet, Peninsula Players, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, First Stage Children’s Theatre (artistic associate), Forward Theatre Company, YoungBlood Theatre Company, Next Act Theatre and The Fireside (resident designer). Lillian Tillson (Assistant Stage Manager) – Lillian Tillson is happy to be joining Skylight for her second season as Assistant Stage Manager.

Paul Madden (Assistant Stage Manager) – Paul is happy to be back with Skylight Opera Theatre for Adding Machine. He is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Theatre department and has recently worked in various backstage capacities for UWM, the Boulevard Ensemble Studio Theatre, and Skylight Opera Theatre. He has also been seen onstage in the Boulevard Theatre’s productions of The Marriage of Bette and Boo and All’s Well That Ends Well and Soulstice Theatre’s Another Antigone. In addition, he made his directing debut this season during the Boulevard Theatre’s one-act series, Four Play. Paul would like to thank mom, Cindy, Noah, family and friends, the Boulevard Theatre, and the UWM faculty for all their support.

It is meant to provide in-depth background information about the show, including information on the composer and author, source material, historical perspective on the setting, and information about the Skylight directors, designers and performers. The guide is available on our website and in the lobby of the theatre.

Bad Weather Policy...Skylight does not cancel or reschedule performances due to inclement weather, nor can we offer refunds.

Johnson Bank Cabaret Series...Friday and Saturday evening performances in the Cabot Theatre are followed by a free, 45-minute cabaret show in the Skylight Bar & Bistro. There is not a cabaret performance on opening night.

Emergency Contact…If you need to be contacted during the performance, an emergency number is available for your convenience: (414) 908-6645. This extension is a message center for the house manager. Please leave your seat location so we may contact you.

Food and Drink...Skylight Bar & Bistro, located on the second floor of the Broadway Theatre Center, is a full-service bar with a pre-theatre dinner menu open two hours before Cabot Theatre performances, at intermission and after performances with the exception of Sunday evenings. For reservations, call Kafevino at (414) 224-4900.

Group Discounts...Groups of 10 or more are eligible for our group discount. Make your event unique and ask about our rental spaces for a pre- or post-show reception with cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres, dinner or dessert. Parking...Convenient, free or low-cost parking is available in several locations.

Metered street parking throughout the Historic Third Ward is free after 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays. The Italian Community Center parking lot, three blocks east of the theatre at Jackson and Menomonee streets, is free after 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays; daytime parking is also available for a small fee. Structure parking is available for a small fee in the Third Ward parking structures located at Chicago and Milwaukee streets (two blocks east) and Chicago and Water streets (two blocks west).

Recording Equipment & Cameras...The use of recording devices and/or photography is strictly prohibited in the theatre during a performance.

Special Patron Services... A limited number of infrared hearing systems are available on a first come, first served basis. Audio description, sign language interpretation and wheelchair seating are available and can be arranged in advance by calling (414) 291-7800.

Hours...Monday through Saturday noon to 6:00 p.m. and two hours prior to all performances. Skylight tickets are available for purchase online at www.skylightopera.com — 24 hours a day/7 days a week!

Ticket Exchanges… Season tickets may be exchanged for tickets to another performance of the same production by mail, fax, or in person, up to 48 hours in advance of a performance. Reservations for ticket exchanges may not be made less than 48 hours in advance of the original performance date. Subscribers and single ticket holders who lose their tickets may contact the box office for duplicates; seating locations are on record. All sales are final.

Ticket Donations...Ticket holders who are unable to use their tickets may donate them for resale and receive a receipt for a tax-deductible contribution. Just ask the box office for a contribution receipt. Tickets are not refundable, nor may the ticket value be applied to future ticket sales or outstanding pledges.
