D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E In November of 2012 I was browsing items at a vintage flea market when I found Milton Bradley’s board game of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. A board game of a Broadway musical? Where is the Chutes and Ladders-type version of Les Miz or the Sweeney Todd version of Candyland. I thought it was funny. I liked the graphics on the box. I walked away. Then my partner said, “You have to get that. It’s a board game based on your favorite musical.” So I bought it. When I got home and really started looking at it I loved the colors, the cartoons, but most of all the text above title of the game reading “This is NOT a serious game.”

This is not a serious musical. It is satire written by some of the most brilliant comedy minds of their generation, maybe of any.

This show is a perfect storm of my favorites. I love this time period; I love mid-century modern design; I know way too much about pop music from this time period; I have a weird obsession with the Kennedys, specifically Jackie; and my favorite composer is Frank Loesser. There have been very few cabaret shows I have done in my career as a singer that haven’t included a Frank Loesser tune. Hell, I even have an Abe Burrows song in my audition book. When I graduated from college and all of the rest of my contemporaries were listening to Rent, the Matthew Broderick revival of How to Succeed…never left my CD player. In short, I love this show. It is one of the eight Pulitzer Prize-winning shows. I think it is perfect. I’ve approached this production wanting to honor it, stay out of its way, infuse it with some passion, and remember that it is not a serious show.

I’ve never played that board game. But boy does it look neato in my apartment.

BIOGR APHIES MATTHIAS AUSTIN (Twimble/Womper/ Matthews, u/s Jenkins) is excited to be making his Porchlight Music Theatre debut!

Most recently he was seen as “Bob Crachit” in Theatre at the Center’s production of A Christmas Carol. He has also played “Ernst Ludwig” in Cabaret with Light Opera Works, having previously appeared in LOW’S productions of H.M.S. Pinafore and Oliver. He recently appeared as “Beadle Bamford” in Sweeney Todd with Williams Street Repertory.

CLARE DOLAN (Ensemble, u/s Rosemary) is a recent graduate of the Chicago College of Performing Arts, she is proud to call Chicago home. Clare was most recently seen at Porchlight Music Theatre in Pal Joey. She has also worked in the city with Light Opera Works and as a swing for Theo Ubique’s Cats. CHRISTOPHER KELLEY (Johnson/Coffee Man/Waiter, u/s Tackaberry/Ovington/TV Announcer) is thrilled to be making his Porchlight Music Theatre and Chicagoland Debut! MICHAEL KINGSTON (Gatch/Toynbee, u/s Biggley) gleefully returns to Porchlight!

He recently performed 50Whatever/ Singin’Whatever at Davenport’s Piano Bar. Michael received two Jeff Award nominations (“Charlemagne/Bertha” - Boho’s Pippin and “Morris Cohen”- Timeline’s Fiorello!) Other credits include Theo Ubique’s The Light in the Piazza, Boho’s La Cage Aux Folles, Emerald City’s Peter Pan, Griffin’s The Robber Bridegroom, and The Neo Futurists’ The Last Two Minutes …... Michael is represented by Gray Talent. For Thelma, Grandpa, Pat, and Dixie.

BILL KURTIS (The Voice of the Book) has more than 40 years of experience as an award-winning journalist. He grew up in Independence, Kansas, and studied journalism at the University of Kansas.

After earning his degree, Kurtis decided to go to law school at Washburn University.

At the start of his career, he worked for a television station in Topeka, Kansas, before moving to Chicago in 1966 to work for WBBM-TV. In 1970, he joined the staff of a CBS station in Los Angeles and soon had his first taste of national news, serving as a contributor to CBS Reports. He returned to Chicago in 1973 to become a news anchor at his old station. During this time, he won several awards for his reporting. Kurtis covered the war in Vietnam, including the fall of Saigon, and created a documentary about the city’s orphans. In 1982, Bill Kurtis joined the national program, CBS Morning News, as a co-host. But after three years, he returned to Chicago, resuming his role as anchor at WBBM-TV. In 1990, Kurtis began a new phase of his career as a host and producer of documentary television series. Establishing his own production company, Kurtis Productions, he created Investigative Reports, Cold Case Files, and other programs for the A&E Television Network. As a producer, Kurtis earned two Emmy Award nominations for Cold Case Files for Outstanding Nonfiction Series in 2004 and 2005. He also serves as host on the popular American Justice series, which looks at famous legal cases and their impact on the law. In addition to his television work, Bill Kurtis has written two books: Bill Kurtis on Assignment (1983) and The Death Penalty on Trial: Crisis in American Justice (2004). He 6

also lent his deep and distinguished voice to the 2004 news comedy The Legend of Ron Burgundy starring Will Farrell. Devoted to his home state, Bill Kurtis has invested in several businesses there and operates a ranch near the town of Sedan. Commitment to conservation, he serves on the board of directors for several organizations, including The Nature Conservancy and the National Park Foundation.

IRIS LIEBERMAN* (Miss Jones) makes her Porchlight Music Theatre debut with this production. A Joseph Jefferson Awardwinning actress, Iris has performed leading and featured roles in over 165 productions.

Recently: Elegy (Richard Christiansen Theatre) directed by Dennis Zacek, Fiddler on the Roof (Paramount Theatre) directed by Jim Corti.

LEXI LYRIC (Secretary/Scrubwoman, u/s Smitty, u/s Krumholtz) was last seen at Porchlight Music Theatre in Pal Joey. She is so pumped to be returning to perform this wonderful show!

She is currently a senior at Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University majoring in music theater. For the past two years she has been performing at Summer Repertory Theater in Santa Rosa, California in shows such as Xanadu, (Kira) Shrek, (Dragon/ Mama Bear) Fox On The Fairway, (Murial), Pirates of Penzance (Edith). She has most recently been seen in Triumph of Love and Do I Hear a Waltz with The Music Theatre Company and is represented with Paonessa Talent.

FRED ZIMMERMAN* (Biggley) makes his debut at Porchlight. Fred has appeared at theatres across Chicagoland, including Northlight, Court, Goodman, Drury Lane Oakbrook, and over 17 productions at the Marriott Theatre. a busy freelance business writer, and a very popular corporate entertainer, appearing as “Fred Zimmerman - The Chicago Mentalist.”

JULIA ZAYAS-MELENDEZ* (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be making her Porchlight Music Theatre debut. Julia has worked with many theatres in Chicagoland, including Route 66, Marriott Theatre, Drury Lane, Fox Valley Repertory, Apple Tree, About Face, Chicago Dramatists, Steppenwolf, Remy Bumppo, Rivendell, Next, Court, Madison Repertory, and Theater at the Center. A graduate of Emerson College, Julia began her career in Massachusetts, with Opera Boston, Boston Theatre Works, The Theatre Offensive, Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, SpeakEasy Stage, and Shakespeare & Company. She also spent a season at Tri-State Actors Theater in Sussex County, NJ, and celebrated World Theatre Day 2009 in Konya, Turkey with ShawChicago.

FRANK LOESSER (Music & Lyrics) began his songwriting career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing songs to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His work with composer Irving Actman in the 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a songwriting contract in Hollywood, where he spent the next eleven years working with such composers as Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs from that period include “Two Sleepy People,” “Jingle Jangle Jingle” and “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You.” The first song for which Loesser wrote both words and music was “Praise The Lord And Pass The Ammunition,” written during his World War II service. His Hollywood work after the war included the hit songs “Spring Will Be A Little Late This Year,” “A Slow Boat To China,” and the 1949 Oscar-winning song “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” In 1948 Loesser was approached by fledgling Broadway producers Cy Feuer and Ernest Martin to write music and lyrics to George Abbott’s libretto for an adaptation of the classic Brandon Thomas play Charley’s Aunt. The new musical, which starred Ray Bolger, was called Where’s Charley? and was a hit. This led to Loesser’s next show, the hugely influential and successful Guys and Dolls in 1950, also produced by Feuer and Martin, with a script by Abe Burrows and Jo Swerling. In 1956 Loesser wrote the libretto, music and lyrics for his next show, The Most 8

Happy Fella, adapted from Sidney Howard’s play, They Knew What They Wanted. This impressive score contains over 30 musical numbers and makes extensive use of operatic techniques and forms, including recitative, arias, duets, trios and choral numbers. In 1960 he provided the score and was co-librettist for Greenwillow. In 1961, Loesser wrote the score for the Pulitzer Prize-winning How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. His last show, Pleasures and Palaces, closed in 1965 during out-of-town try-outs.

ABE BURROWS (Book) After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio script writer and writer/performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, co-written with Jo Swerling, with a score by Frank Loesser.

Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Make A Wish, Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Say, Darling, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (which he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays include Cactus Flower (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed).

JACK WEINSTOCK (Book) a native New Yorker who attended Columbia College and was a graduate of NYU’s Bellevue Medical College, was in private life a doctor. He did not start to write professionally until he met his collaborator Willie Gilbert, first as a patient and then as a friend. In addition to his successful writing career, “Dr. Jack” (as Weinstock’s friends called him) successfully lived two lives, one as author and one as doctor. He was medical director of a life insurance company, surgeon at two hospitals, and had a Fifth Avenue medical practice. Jack Weinstock died in 1969.

WILLIE GILBERT (Book) came from Cleveland, Ohio, received a B.S. in education, but pursued a career as a comedian. Together Gilbert and Weinstock won Tony Awards as co-writers of How to Succeed... Subsequent stage credits include the 1963 musical comedy Hot Spot and the 1965 hit comedy mystery Catch Me If You Can. TV credits range from science fiction to classic children’s shows like Howdy Doody, and sketches for comedian Jackie Gleason. Willie Gilbert died in 1980.

MICHAEL WEBER (Managing Artistic Director) The recipient of two Jeff Awards, Weber’s productions of Pal Joey and Assassins (Porchlight), Grand Hotel (Drury Lane Water Tower) and She Loves Me (Theatre at the Center) were each nominated for the Jeff Award for Best Production-Musical. His numerous directing credits include Fifth of July at Oak Park Festival, Beauty and the Beast at Marriott, Over the River and Through the Woods at The Mercury Theatre, and Cirque du Symphony at Sears Center Arena. Michael is a Central Regional Board Member of Actors’ Equity Association, author of the new play WAR of the WELLeS and a proud subscription drive host for Chicago’s PBS station, WTTW.

Kory has served as the Music Director/ Conductor for Theo Ubique’s Passion, resident Music Director at Haven Theatre (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, The Wedding Singer), pianist/ conductor for Theo’s Smokey Joe’s Café (Royal George transfer), and as AMD under Roberta Duchak at Drury Lane Oakbrook (Xanadu, Singin’ in the Rain). Kory frequently works with The Music Theatre Company (Young Artist Program, 48-hour Musicals, Zanna Don’t, Lucky Stiff, Triumph of Love) and has also worked with Chicago Children’s Theatre, Bailiwick, and National Pastime Theatre, Hell in a Handbag, and Street Tempo Theatre. Some of his other Chicago credits include Bernarda Alba, Hello Again, and LaChiusa’s The Wild Party.

ROB LINDLEY+ (Director) returns to Porchlight having directing last year’s Jeff Award-winning Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill and the 2007 production of A Wonderful Life. Rob also annually directs and hosts the Chicago Sings concert series for Porchlight along with husband Doug Peck. Recently Rob directed the Off-Broadway production of 50 Shades! The Musical. Rob is a Jeff Award-winning actor, having appeared in productions at Court Theatre, Writers’ Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Mercury Theatre, Apple Tree Theatre, and of course at Porchlight where Rob has been an Artistic Associate for close to ten years. Currently Rob is spending time in the studio with his vocal trio Foiled Again recording a holiday album set to release later in 2014.

ERIK BARRY (Lighting Design) is delighted to be making his Porchlight debut with How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (Porchlight Music Theatre). Previous Chicago Designs include Do-Gooders (16th Street Theatre), A Christmas Wish (Quest Theatre Ensemble) as well as productions with The Museum of Contemporary Art, and Nothing Special Productions. He has works regularly as an electrician at theatre’s such as The Goodman, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Steppenwolf, Lookingglass Theatre, The Marriott Linconshire and many more. He has designed over 40 productions in his career.

Highlights include The Rocky Horror Show with The University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as The Fiddler on the Roof, Chicago, and Forever Plaid with the Summer Theatre in Meredith Village He holds an MFA in Lighting Design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

AARON SHAPIRO+ (Production Manager) is excited to be working with Porchlight Porchlight Music Theatre

Music Theatre! He is currently the Executive Director and co-founder of Studio BE in Lakeview. After college, Aaron founded Oracle Productions and opened their 40-seat black box theatre in Wrigleyville, where he served for 4 years as Artistic Director. He has worked professionally in Chicago as a director, stage manager, producer, actor, production manager, electrician, carpenter, sound technician, run crew, technical director, scenic designer and lighting designer for over 40 different Chicago theatre companies.

HEATHER TOWNSEND+ (Assistant Director) is delighted to serve as a Porchlight Artistic Associate, where she has performed in Porchlight’s productions of The Gifts of the Magi, Nine, Sunday in the Park with George and Macabaret. Recently, she performed in the Mercury Theatre’s critically-acclaimed production of A Grand Night for Singing, with music direction by fellow Artistic Associate, Eugene Dizon. Other Chicago credits include work with Northlight, Remy Bumppo, Shattered Globe, Dog & Pony, Fox Valley Rep, Chicago Opera Vanguard, Caffeine, Circle, Buffalo Theatre Ensemble, Bohemian Theatre Ensemble, Apple Tree, Next, Theatre Wit, City Lit, Stage Left and Pegasus and readings with the Goodman and Steppenwolf. She is a graduate of Columbia University and The University of Chicago Law School.

DINA DiCOSTANZO+ (Assistant Choreographer) is an actress, singer and dancer who performs regularly in and around Chicagoland. Her stage accomplishments include work at Marriott Theatre Lincolnshire, Drury Lanes Oakbrook and Water Tower, Victory Gardens, Paramount, The Mercury, Theatre at the Center, Northlight Theatre, CenterStage Baltimore, and Capital Rep in Albany NY. She earned a Jeff Award nomination for her performance as “Flaemmchen” in Grand Hotel at Drury Lane, Water Tower. Dina choreographs for many projects and theatres including Fremont Street Theatre in Palatine where she received a Broadway World nomination for her choreography of The Drowsy Chaperone and will be working on Crazy For You this summer.

Stage773 conducts two primary activities: to provide subsidized space rental to Chicago’s many off-Loop companies and to produce its own work. In addition to space to perform, tenants receive full box office, front of house and customer services, marketing support and 24 hour technical assistance. In the course of a month, over 30 different performances will be presented on the stages of Stage 773 including our very own Cupid Players are now in their 11th year, joining SMUSH!, a weekly open mic featuring the funniest people in Chicago performing sketch-comedy, improvisation, stand-up and smushing them together on one stage. In addition to these groups, Stage 773 produces the Chicago Women’s Funny Festival and now the Chicago Nerd Comedy Festival. Stage 773 also offers advanced education programs including master classes for adults as well as training programs for recent graduates.

Additionally, we are seeking individuals who have experience in the fields of finance/ accounting, fundraising, and legal: not for profit and real estate. Ideal candidates have diverse networks and/or ties to art-supporting companies in the Chicago area.

Volunteers contribute, on average, about 4-6 hours a month attending board and committee meetings as well as board-related events. In exchange for your service, you have the opportunity to interact with a truly dynamic group of people and play a vital role in Chicago’s cultural community.
