WELCOME Dear Friends of the Northshore Concert Band, We are delighted to share with you this afternoon a vibrant and exciting program.

Among the highlights, we open with the dazzling Fanfare for a New Era by Jack Stamp, followed by Frank Ticheli’s dramatic Angels in the Architecture, and we close with Philip Sparke’s Dance Movements. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to present this wonderful program to you, and then perform it again for the students at Rickover Naval Academy later this month. The generous donations to our Kickstarter campaign made this Chicago Public School performance possible.

Looking ahead, the Northshore Concert Band will welcome the Axiom Brass Quintet as our guest artists on our final series concert. We hope that you will return on Sunday, June 8th for our “American Salute” concert here at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall.

C O N D U C TO R A N D A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R Mallory Thompson Mallory Thompson is the director of bands, professor of music, and coordinator of the conducting program at Northwestern University. In 2003 she was named a Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence. As the third person in the university’s history to hold the director of bands position, Thompson conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, teaches undergraduate and graduate conducting, and administers all aspects of the band program. December 2011 marked the release of rising, her fourth compact disc with the Northwestern Symphonic Wind Ensemble on the Summit label.

Thompson received her bachelor of music education degree and master of music degree in conducting from Northwestern University, where she studied conducting with John P. Paynter and trumpet with Vincent Cichowicz. She received the doctor of musical arts degree in conducting from the Eastman School of Music, where she studied with Donald Hunsberger. Thompson maintains an active schedule as guest conductor, conducting teacher, and guest lecturer throughout the United States and Canada. She has taught conducting to hundreds of undergraduate students, graduate students, and professional educators. Thompson has served as a conductor or clinician at the College Band Directors National Association regional and national conventions, the Midwest Clinic, the Interlochen Arts Academy, numerous state music conventions, and the Aspen Music Festival. She has also appeared as guest conductor with the United States Air Force Band, United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” United States Army Field Band, United States Coast Guard Band, United States Navy Band, West Point Band, Dallas Wind Symphony, and Symphony Silicon Valley. Her professional affiliations include Pi Kappa Lambda, College Band Directors National Association, and the American We’ll blow your mind.

Bandmasters Association. Thompson first conducted the Northshore Concert Band in April 1999 and was named principal guest conductor the same season. She conducted one subscription concert each year and also appeared with the band at the 2001 Midwest Clinic.

In 2003, Thompson took on the expanded role of artistic director. The 2005–2006 season marked her first year as sole musical and artistic leader of the Northshore Concert Band, conducting the ensemble in all four subscription concerts.

ARTIST BIOGR APHY Alison Wahl Alison Wahl, a DMA student at Northwestern, was most recently seen there as Pamina in The Magic Flute, La Musique in Les Arts Florissants, The First Gossip in Ghosts of Versailles and as a soloist with the Baroque Music Ensemble, Symphonic Wind Ensemble, NUCO, and NUSO. She performs with the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Music of the Baroque, and the Chicago Arts Orchestra. Alison was a Fellow at the Steans Program at Ravinia in 2012, and performed as Clori in Haymarket Opera’s Clori, Tirsi, e Fileno, and as a soloist with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and CSO Chamber Music Festival. She received an Encouragement Award from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Second Place in the 2013 U. Madison Handel Aria Competition, and was the winner of the Musicians Club of Women Farwell Trust Award. She won the 2012 NU Concerto Competition, the 2011 Empire State Collegiate Competition, and the 2011 Chicago Council NATS. Alison was a soloist at the 2011 Kennedy Center Conservatory Project in Washington, D.C. In the summer of 2010, Alison was a Studio Artist with Opera North. She graduated summa cum laude from Amherst College, where she won the Eric Edward Sundquist Prize and the Consulate General Prize.

A recipient of the Edward Poole Lay Fellowship, Alison holds a Masters of Music with Honors from NU, where was awarded the Eckstein Scholarship and studies with Pamela Hinchman.

Northshore Concert Band

ABOUT US The Northshore Concert Band (NCB) is a 100-member adult symphonic band with membership drawn from the greater Chicago metropolitan area. Founded in 1956 by the late John P. Paynter, the ensemble has become internationally known and respected for its musical excellence, membership continuity, and service to music education. Dr. Mallory Thompson, director of bands and professor of conducting at Northwestern University, is NCB’s artistic director. Thompson is in great demand as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the United States and is widely regarded as one of the leading wind conductors in the nation.

NCB performs 10 to12 concerts a year in the Chicago metropolitan area, reaching over 20,000 people. These include a four-concert series at Northwestern University’s Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, educational outreach programs at area schools, many summer concerts at the invitation of various communities and venues, and professional band festivals and conferences. Over the years, the group has worked with many renowned soloists and conductors, including Doc Severinsen, Wynton Marsalis, Frederick Fennell, Leroy Anderson, and dozens of musicians from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, including Christopher Martin, John Bruce Yeh, Dale Clevenger, Adolph Herseth, and Mathieu Dufour.

NCB has produced eight CDs and receives playtime on Chicago’s classical music station, WFMT, among others. The band has also toured in Canada and Europe and extensively throughout the United States. NCB’s mission is deeply rooted in the concept of “community” and in encouraging involvement in music for people at all stages of life. NCB strives to be a leader in performance, educational outreach, recorded works, and new commissions, while reaffirming the heritage of bands in America. Several programs in NCB’s Lifetime of Music initiative help further the band’s educational mission. NCB co-sponsors the Northshore Concert Band/Northwestern University Festival, which annually provides 3,500 Chicago area young musicians the opportunity to perform solos and ensembles, with NCB members serving as judges and clinicians. The band also awards its John P. Paynter Scholarship to an outstanding young musician and invites dozens of talented middle/high school students to perform with the band at the Winter Concert to help encourage young people to pursue their musical endeavors after graduation.

The ensemble’s musicians come from throughout the Chicago area, northern Indiana and southern Wisconsin, and represent many professional backgrounds. Approximately half are professional music educators; the rest have a diverse set of occupations, including business executives, attorneys and physicians. Musicians range in age from 20 to 85, many with a tenure of two decades or more with the ensemble. All of the musicians are selected by audition and are strongly committed to volunteering their time and talents to the group.

NCB has sponsored three adult band conferences and has published a guide to organizing community bands, along with a CD-ROM of written resources for administering adult bands. These community band resources are available for download on our website, www.northshoreband.org.

PROGR A M NOTES Fanfare for a New Era Jack Stamp A musician of diverse interests and talents, Jack Stamp received his bachelor’s degree in Music Education, master’s degree in Percussion Performance, and doctoral degree in Conducting from Michigan State University. Stamp’s primary composition teachers have been Robert Washburn and Fisher Tull, though he has also studied with internationallyrenown composers David Diamond and Joan Tower. He is currently Professor of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and teaches courses in conducting. The Keystone Wind Ensemble, a community ensemble founded and conducted by Stamp, has produced many celebrated recordings over the past twenty years.

Fanfare for a New Era bears the dedication “with congratulations to Lt. Col. Lowell E. Graham.” It was written as a celebration to Lt. Col. Graham’s appointment as Commander of the United States Air Force Band, a position he served from 1995 to 2002. The composer writes: “As I envisioned the piece, I knew that I heard something energetic and vibrant, highlighting the talents of this fine ensemble and its new musical leader.” As is typical of Stamp’s compositional style, a bold theme is established by the brass and then enriched and developed by the ensemble with elements of fugal counterpoint, minimalism, and chorale-style augmentation. Throughout, the work maintains a brisk tempo and conveys a sense of determination and optimism.

Angels in the Architecture Frank Ticheli Frank Ticheli is one of America’s most frequently-performed composers of music for concert band. More than a dozen of his pieces have become standards in the repertoire for middle school, high school and college ensembles. Ticheli was winner of the 2006 NBA/William D. Revelli Memorial Band Composition Competition Contest for his Symphony No. 2; other awards include the Charles Ives and the Goddard Lieberson Awards, the Walter Beeler Memorial Prize, and First Prize in Virginia CBDNA Symposium for New Band Music. Ticheli joined the faculty of the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music in 1991, where he is Professor of Composition. From 1991 to 1998, Ticheli was Composer-in-Residence of the Pacific Symphony, and he still enjoys a close working relationship with that orchestra and its music director, Carl St. Clair.

Angels in the Architecture, commissioned by Kingsway International Foundation, was premiered at the Sydney Opera House on July 6, 2008 by a massed band of young musicians from Australia and the United States led by American conductor Matthew George. The work unfolds as a dramatic conflict between the two extremes of human existence: one divine, the other evil. The title is inspired by the Sydney Opera House itself, with its halo-shaped acoustical ornaments hanging directly above the famous performance stage. The piece begins with a single voice singing a 19th-century Shaker song: I am an angel of Light I have soared from above I am cloth’d with Mother’s love.

I have come, I have come.

To protect my chosen band And lead them to the promised land.

The composer writes: This “angel” - represented by the singer - frames the work, surrounding it with a protective wall of light and establishing the divine. Other representations of light, played by instruments rather than sung, include a traditional Hebrew song of peace (“Hevenu Shalom Aleichem”) and the well-known 16th-century Genevan Psalter, “Old Hundredth.” These three borrowed songs, despite their varied religious origins, are meant to transcend any one religion, representing the more universal human ideals of peace, hope, and love. An original chorale, appearing twice in the work, represents my own personal expression of these aspirations.

Just as Charles Ives did more than a century ago, Angels in the Architecture poses the unanswered question of existence. It ends as it began: the angel reappears sings the same comforting words. But deep below, a final shadow reappears - distantly, ominously.

Rejouissance James Curnow James Curnow received his first musical instruction in the public schools of Michigan and The Salvation Army Instrumental Programs. After studying conducting with Harry Begian and euphonium with Leonard Falcone at Michigan State University, he pursued formal composition studies with many composers for concert band, including F. Maxwell Wood, James Gibb, Jere Hutchinson and Irwin Fischer. Curnow has taught all areas and levels of instrumental music and currently resides in Kentucky, where he owns and operates Curnow Music Press, Inc. Rejouissance was commissioned by the St. Joseph Michigan Municipal Band in 1987. It is written “in honor of, and lovingly dedicated to John E. N. Howard to celebrate forty years as Conductor, 1948–1987.” The work is based on the Martin Luther chorale, “Ein’ feste Burg” (A Mighty Fortress Is Our God), and the character is intended to capture the essence of the French word “rejouissance.” This term literally translates to “enjoyment” Echoes of Light

or “to make happy,” though in music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries – it was used to describe a short composition of a lively or playful nature. The composer describes the structure of his work as “a fantasia, in which a ‘free flight of fancy’ prevails over contemporary conventions of form or style.”

Serenade, Op. 22c Derek Bourgeois Derek Bourgeois is a prolific British composer, having published thirty-five symphonies, seventeen concertos, seven major works for chorus and orchestra, two operas and a musical. Additionally, he has produced many shorter works for brass band and wind ensemble. In Great Britain, he is well known for his compositions for television and film.

Born in Kingston, he graduated from Cambridge University and spent two years at the Royal College of Music where he studied composition with Herbert Howells and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult. Since 1970, Bourgeois has served in a variety of teaching and conducting positions, including those at Bristol University, the Sun Life Band, the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the Bristol Philharmonic Orchestra, and the St Paul’s Girls School in London (a post most famously held by Gustav Holst).

Now retired from teaching, he currently works as a full-time composer in Mallorca, Spain.

Bourgeois first wrote Serenade, Op. 22c for solo organ in 1965 to be performed at his own wedding. The music was meant to accompany guests as they left the ceremony; rather than allow them the luxury of proceeding to orderly “wedding march-style” rhythms, the composer wrote the work in unexpected, irregular metric groupings, shifting the pulse with quirky, dancing rhythms. Bourgeois later transcribed the work for a variety of orchestrations, including this popular version for wind ensemble published in 1980.

Dance Movements Philip Sparke Philip Sparke, an award-winning British composer who studied composition and trumpet at the Royal College of Music, is known and commissioned worldwide for his brass band and wind ensemble music. About Dance Movements, the composer writes: Dance Movements was commissioned by the United States Air Force Band and first performed at the Florida Music Educators’ Association Convention in January 1996. It is cast in four movements which play without a break. In many respects, the circumstances of the commission itself were the musical inspiration for the piece: I had been asked to write for a very large band, which included piano and harp. It was the first time I had used these instruments in a concert band score and (as in Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements) their presence colored the score and, indeed, the type of music I wrote.

The four movements are all dance-inspired, although no specific dance rhythms are used. The first has a Latin American feel and uses xylophone, 8

cabasa, tambourine and wood block to provide “local” colors. The opening theme is played by horns and saxophones amidst stabbing chords from extreme registers of the band. A gentler theme follows on piccolo and clarinet, followed by the flute, oboe, trumpet, harp and glockenspiel. When the main motif of the movement finally arrives, it includes a dotted rhythm that recurs at all significant moments.

The second movement starts with a rustic, English country dance tune that is continually interrupted. It passes through various keys and stages of development until a bubbling ostinato arrives on piano, harp, and glockenspiel.

The oboe presents a languid tune, which is then taken up by soprano and alto saxophones. Clarinets and lower winds introduce a new idea that is interspersed by snatches of the ostinato. Eventually the oboe theme reappears, accompanied now by rich low chords. The dance tune establishes itself once more before winding down to a close.

Though the third movement was composed without a specific dance analogy, it should be seen as a love duet in classical ballet. The mood is set by whispering muted trumpets, harp and vibraphone. Declamatory statements from horn and trombone speak in dialogue as a slow and majestic chorale begins. Trumpets lead to the emotional climax, where the original trombone statement reappears, ushering in a return of the opening trumpets figures.

The fourth movement is the product of a ten-year fascination – almost obsession – with the music of Leonard Bernstein, and owes its existence to the fantastic dance music in West Side Story. It bursts into life with a passage featuring the percussion section.

The whole band then joins in until a driving bass ostinato is established.

Melodic fragments are passed around the ensemble as a gradual crescendo leads to a unison passage. After a return of earlier material, the brass eventually play a noble fanfare, dispelling the darker moods and ending the work in a blaze of color.
