N O T E F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R Greetings – The Oxford dictionary defines “cabaret” as “a nightclub or restaurant where entertainment is performed.” As we program our Stackner Cabaret seasons, we look for productions that explore what “entertainment” means – “to provide amusement or enjoyment.” I believe you will find “Entertainment,” with a capital E, in Ain’t Misbehavin’.

In the past four years of my tenure as Artistic Director, we have programmed a variety of shows in this space from biographical revues like Always…Patsy Cline, to performances like Mind Over Milwaukee, to plays like The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), to actor/musician revues like Blues in the Night. They are all very different shows but what they have in common is “Entertainment.”

This production entertains by reconceiving Ain’t Misbehavin’ as a show in which audiences see triple or quadruple threat performers act, dance, and play their own instruments.

Up close and personal in the intimate Stackner Cabaret space, the multi-talented cast of Bethany Thomas (back with us after her memorable performance in Ragtime) Erin Willis, Chris Culberson, Britney Coleman, and Kenney Green will share with you the music and entertainment of the Harlem Renaissance. This whole production is overseen by Associate Artist Dan Kazemi in his directorial debut at The Rep, after working with us as the musical director of over eight shows, including Ragtime, Blues in the Night, Cabaret, and Next to Normal.

Luther Henderson, Musical Adaptor Luther Henderson has worked on more than two dozen Broadway productions in various capacities.

For Ain’t Misbehavin’ he was the original pianist as well as orchestrator, arranger and musical supervisor.

Mr. Henderson orchestrated and co-composed Jelly’s Last Jam. He was nominated for a Tony Award in 1997 for orchestrating Play On!, as a dance arranger and/or orchestrator, Mr. Henderson’s credits include Flower Drum Song, Do Re Mi, Funny Girl, Hallelujah, Baby and No, No Nanette. Mr. Henderson counts his work with Duke Ellington, Andre Kostelanetz, Jule Styne, Carol Haney, Richard Rodgers, Polly Bergen and Lena Horne as the most important milestones of his career.

He is married to actress and director Billie Allen.

Aimee Hanyzewski, Lighting Designer Aimee Hanyzewski is glad to be back working at The Rep. Aimee has designed in the Stackner Cabaret for such hits as From My Hometown, Fire on the Bayou, Grafton City Blues and in the Stiemke Theater for The Year of Magically Thinking. She also worked on The Rep’s A Christmas Carol for six years as the Associate Lighting Designer. Currently, Aimee is a freelance lighting

designer in the Madison and Chicago area.

Barry G. Funderberg, Sound Designer Barry is excited to return to The Rep for his 67th production. Memorable Rep productions include Woody Sez, Blues in the Night, Othello, The 39 Steps, The Cherry Orchard, Pride and Prejudice, Armadale, Mary Stuart, Work Song, and Angels in America. Off-Broadway, Barry designed the critically acclaimed New York premiere of Wittenberg at The Pearl Theatre Company. Regional theatre credits include Fake, Carter’s Way, and Mother Courage and Her Children at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, sixteen productions at Utah Shakespeare Festival, including the recent regional theatre premiere of Peter and the Starcatcher, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre , Arizona Theatre Company, City Theatre (Pittsburgh), CenterStage (Baltimore), Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Peninsula Players, American Players Theatre, LA Theatre Works, and Indiana Rep. Chicago credits include Next Theatre, Theatre at the Center, and Lookingglass Theatre Company.

Barry has received four Chicago Equity Jeff Award nominations, the 1996 and 2008 Jeff Awards for Sound Design, and an MFA in sound design from Purdue University.

Jenn Rose, Stage Movement Director Jenn is a choreographer and teaching artist residing in Philadelphia.

She has choreographed numerous regional theater productions with some of her favorites being Spring Awakening, Honk!, Spelling Bee, and Little Shop of Horrors.

Jenn has collaborated and created new works for BalletFleming, 213 Ain’t Misbehavin’ –

She is the artistic director/choreographer of Loose Screws Contemporary Tap Company, a Broadway World Philadelphia Audience Choice Award winner, and a three time Barrymore Award nominee.

Keep an eye out for Jenn’s choreography in Christmas Dreams, an 80-minute feature dance film. She would like to thank Dan for this journey out west. Jenn is grateful to be inspired everyday and looks forward to what is yet to come…

Richelle Harrington Calin, Stage Manager Richelle Harrington Calin has been with Milwaukee Rep since 2004.

Milwaukee Rep credits include: Bach at Leipzig, The Clean House, Intimate Apparel, Gem of the Ocean, A Christmas Carol, The Voysey Inheritance, Life Could Be a Dream, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Night is a Child, I Am My Own Wife, Greater Tuna, Pride and Prejudice, Shear Madness, The Lady with All the Answers, Yankee Tavern, Route 66, Cabaret, Bombshells, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Yellowman, Othello, The Mountaintop, How The World Began and End of the Rainbow. Ain’t Misbehavin’ is the 150th production of her professional career.

Rachel Lantow, Stage Management Intern Rachel, originally from Lakeville, Minnesota, joined The Rep’s intern company as a graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato where she earned her BFA in Theatre Design/Technology. Rachel has worked for Highland Summer Theatre in Minnesota for two seasons and this past summer she stage managed in Nebraska for Crane River Theater. She wants to thank her family for always supporting her decisions to pursue the dreams laid on her heart, and her close friends for their impact on her life. “For my Audience of One, for my family, and for Kaela.”

Frank Honts, Assistant Director Frank was Assistant Director for The Whipping Man, Woody Sez, Noises Off and Venus in Fur earlier this season, and prior to that, Frank worked as artistic associate at Forward Theater Company in Madison. Recent directing projects include 9 Circles (Midwest premiere) and Speech & Debate. In addition to his work as a director, dramaturg, and assistant director at Forward Theater, Frank has worked with American Players Theatre, California Shakespeare Theater, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Madison Opera, and Children’s Theater of Madison. Education: AB, History, Brown University.
