D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S “The main-travelled road is hot and dusty in summer, and desolate and drear with mud in fall and spring, and in winter the winds sweep the snow across it; but it does sometimes cross a rich meadow where the songs of the larks and bobolinks and blackbirds are tangled. Follow it far enough, it may lead past a bend in the river where the water laughs eternally over its shallows.

Mainly it is long and wearyful and has a dull little town at one end, and a home of toil at the other. Like the main-travelled road of life, it is traversed by many classes of people, but the poor and the weary predominate.”

--Hamlin Garland, 1891 Hamlin Garland’s Main-Travelled Roads is unflinchingly pragmatic. His short stories of historical fiction do not idealize the life of the farmer. He is utterly honest about the hardships. Yet, he is equally generous in his lush descriptions of the land and his overwhelming respect for the farmer.

While reading his stories, I found myself in awe of human progress but also startled by how little has changed. We can plow a field much faster now. We can travel with great speed. We can send messages in mere seconds. Yet, love is just as confusing as ever.

And loss never gets easier.

Direct as Garland is, his writing has a notable optimistic undercurrent—moments of such hope that his language truly sings.

I hope you’ll enjoy these stories of old Wisconsin. You will be treated to a clear-sighted glimpse of the past, which could likely feel quite familiar. ~Molly Rhode

BIOGR APHIES PAUL LIBMAN (Music) and DAVE HUDSON (Book & Lyrics) Paul Libman and Dave Hudson (members, Dramatists Guild and ASCAP) have written six musicals together since they began collaborating in 2003. They are the only two-time winners of the Richard Rodgers Award, which was created for the development of new musical theater. Their productions of MAIN-TRAVELLED ROADS (2007) and DUST AND DREAMS (2005) received the prestigious award. Several of their musicals have been produced at American Folklore Theatre in Door County including MAIN-TRAVELLED ROADS, MUSKIE LOVE, A CABIN WITH A VIEW and CHEESEHEADS, THE MUSICAL. Three of their musicals have been performed at the Stages Festival of New Musicals at Theatre Building Chicago. They are currently working on their next show for American Folklore Theatre, BING! THE CHERRY MUSICAL. HAMLIN GARLAND (Author of MainTravelled Roads, the collection of short stories) Hamlin Garland (1860-1940) was born in West Salem, Wisconsin (near La Crosse). A prolific author, he wrote over 45 books and nearly 500 pieces for periodicals. Garland spent his early years in Wisconsin, and later his family struggled to make ends meet on farms in Iowa and South Dakota. In 1884, he went to Boston to begin his writing career, but was unable to afford a college education. Determined, he spent his days at the public library and produced stories about rural life, which gained him quick popularity. Among his first writings was Main-Travelled Roads, a collection of short stories about smalltown and rural life, published in 1891.

Though best known for his reflections on Midwestern life, he visited many regions of the United States in search of adventure and writing material. He

traveled to the American West to take copious notes on Native Americans and he followed the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898. Garland gained experience with biographical writing with an extensive serial for McClure’s Magazine about the life of Ulysses S. Grant. In 1917, Garland published A Son of the Middle Border, an autobiography of his early life and his experiences with westward expansion. It was so popular that he soon followed with A Daughter of the Middle Border, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1922. He spent the final decade of his life in Hollywood, California where he researched and wrote about psychic phenomena. Throughout his lifetime he was intimately involved with major literary, social and artistic movements in America and his interests extended to nearly all aspects of society. Garland left behind a rich and vivid literary legacy that preserved a distinctive glimpse into American life.

CLARE ARENA HADEN (Mrs. Dingman, Nina and Delia) Clare is thrilled to be making her Milwaukee theatre debut at MCT. She recently moved to Milwaukee with her husband, actor Scott Haden, after receiving an MFA in acting from UW-Madison in May of 2009. Favorite roles there included Ms. Pennywise in URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL, Abby in THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS and Stella in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. She was also seen at Children’s Theatre of Madison as The Ghost of Christmas Past in A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Clare trained as a vocal/dialect coach under Susan Sweeney and has worked in that capacity for productions with American Players Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, The Alley Stage and Children’s Theatre of Madison. This summer she and her husband directed the youth theatre programs for the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre in Grand Lake, Colorado. SCOTT HADEN (Dave & Ed) Scott is thrilled to make his debut with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre! He comes to Milwaukee via Madison and Chicago, where he has performed with Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Writers’ Theatre and Madison Repertory Theatre. You may have seen Scott during past summers with the American Players Theatre.

Favorite roles there include Cornelius in THE MATCHMAKER, Cloten in CYMBELINE and Nicola in ARMS AND THE MAN. When not on stage, Scott serves as the managing director for the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre in Grand Lake, Colorado. But at the moment, he couldn’t be more excited to share the stage with his brilliant and beautiful wife, Clare.

JENNIFER L. SHINE (Aggie & Lucinda) Jennifer is thrilled to make her MCT performance debut in MAIN-TRAVELLED ROADS. A proud graduate of Marquette University, Jennifer lives in Chicago where she has performed with Village Players Theatre and Handbag Productions. Credits include Val in A CHORUS LINE and Clarice in RUDOLF THE RED-HOSED REINDEER. Academic credits include Hannah Ferguson in THE SPITFIRE GRILL, Amalia Balash in SHE LOVES ME and the title role in MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE. She first worked with MCT as a directing intern for the 2008 production of WELL. Many thanks to Molly, Michael and Alissa for this wonderful opportunity. CHASE STOEGER (Will, Mr. Kennedy and Otis) Chase is happy to be back with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre after appearing in HAY FEVER as Simon Bliss. Milwaukee audiences have also seen him at Skylight Opera Theatre, First 6 Milwaukee Chamber Theatre

Stage Children’s Theater, Milwaukee Shakespeare, In Tandem and Bialystock and Bloom. For the past four years Chase has spent his summers in Door County with American Folklore Theatre, where he most recently appeared as Sam Clemens in LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI. Chase appeared in the 2007 premiere of MAIN-TRAVELLED ROADS at American Folklore Theatre. He is honored to reprise the role of Will Hannon here at MCT. In his spare time Chase blogs about his latest crocheted creations on his website, www.realmencrochet.com.

ALISSA RHODE (Musical Direction, Piano) After spending a lovely summer with American Folklore Theatre, Alissa is delighted to be spending autumn with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. She has worked many places and worn many hats, including music director, arranger, composer, pianist/ conductor and all-around keyboard gal. Alissa holds her bachelor’s degree in music composition from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in liberal studies from UW-Milwaukee. She serves as lead music director for the First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee and Eurythmy pianist for Tamarack Waldorf School. She also teaches private lessons and has way too much fun performing with The Rhode Sisters, a Feisty Folk Trio.

RICH HIGDON (Bass Player) Rich Higdon is a multi-instrumentalist who hails from West Jacksonport in Door County. He has traveled across Wisconsin and beyond playing bass, jug, spoons, washboard and even the sinkaphone. Rich is a founding member of a Sheboygan-based old-time blues band called the Water Street Hot Shots, who were finalists in the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

As an actor, Rich worked extensively with director Paul Sills, pioneer of story theatre. Rich is also a professional potter.

MOLLY RHODE (Director) MAIN-TRAVELLED ROADS is Molly’s directing debut at Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. She was previously seen at MCT in one of her favorite plays, TRYING, with Richard Halverson. As an actress, Molly has appeared on all of Milwaukee’s professional stages. She makes Milwaukee her home, but she has spent many summers away at American Players Theatre, the Utah Shakespearean Festival and American Folklore Theatre. It was at AFT where Molly was lucky to appear in the 2007 world premiere of MAINTRAVELLED ROADS as Aggie. She holds a BFA in theatre studies with emphases in directing and playwriting from Southern Methodist University. Later this season, she will direct MISS NELSON IS MISSING! and choreograph U: BUG ME, both at First Stage Children’s Theater, as well as assistant direct H.M.S. PINAFORE for Skylight Opera Theatre.

BRANDY KLINE (Stage Manager) Brandy is pleased to be traveling on this road in such fine company. Brandy has worked as stage manager, prop master and stagehand for a number of theatre and dance companies in Milwaukee. MCT credits include KIMBERLY AKIMBO and A LESSON FROM ALOES (deck chief ), THE FOURTH WALL and TRYING (prop master) and 16 shows as production manager/

company manager. Her training includes a BA in theatre from Lawrence University and stage management and props internships at Milwaukee Repertory Theater and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. Other favorite adventures include Renaissance Theaterworks, Bialystock & Bloom, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Spoleto Festival USA. LISA SCHLENKER (Scenic Designer) Lisa is most often found managing the properties department for Skylight Opera Theatre, where she is a 20-year veteran. An Augustana College music and theatre graduate and a 1988 graduate of the technical theatre MFA program at UW-Madison, she is also an active member of the national organization The Society for Prop Artists & Managers. Lisa’s design work has been seen on the stages of Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Theatre X, African American Children’s Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, Milwaukee Shakespeare and Skylight Opera Theatre. Lisa is also proud to assist with the upkeep of facilities at Skylight Opera Theatre and the Broadway Theatre Center. Thank you for supporting live local theatre!

ELLEN KOZAK (Costume Designer) Ellen Kozak is glad to be back with Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Among her many designs for film and video are documentaries The Road to Emmaus and Wisconsin Death Trip for HBO, German Immigration to the U.S. for Deutsche Welles and Harvest of Joy for WELS. She has also designed a special line of Pizza Hut futuristic uniforms and Northwestern Mutual CEO superhero uniforms.

She is currently working on upcoming segments for the Pioneers of Television series. They will air in January on PBS. JASON FASSL (Lighting Designer) MAIN-TRAVELLED ROADS marks Jason’s ninth production for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, including TAKE ME OUT, TALLEY’S FOLLY and AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS. Other designs this season include productions for Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Ballet, Peninsula Players, First Stage Children’s Theater (artistic associate), Renaissance Theaterworks, Next Act Theatre, YoungBlood Theatre Company, Children’s Theatre of Madison and The Fireside (resident designer). Jason toured with THE MAGIC OF DAVID COPPERFIELD, Susan Stroman’s revival of THE MUSIC MAN and on board two Royal Caribbean ships. Michael has been acting professionally for 33 years and has appeared in regional theatres all across the country.

His most recent performances have been as Dr. Alfred Feldmann in MCT’s DUET FOR ONE and as Sancho Panza in Skylight Opera Theatre’s MAN OF LA MANCHA. Last year, Michael was honored with an “Artist of the Year” award by the City of Milwaukee Arts Board.

KIRSTEN MULVEY (MCT Managing Director) Kirsten Mulvey is in her second season as managing director of Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. She worked previously at MCT as wardrobe crew for the Shaw Festival (early 1990’s), and interim development director (2005).

Since her last appearance at MCT, Kirsten served as a major gifts officer for Milwaukee Public Television Friends and ran her own development consulting firm, KM Creative. Kirsten holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in theatre and communications from Marquette University and is a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE). She has been managing director of Wild Space Dance Company (where she currently is on the board of directors) and development director of the Florentine Opera and the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin.

Talk Theatre: Prior to select Wednesday matinees is Talk Theatre, an opportunity for patrons to participate in an informal discussion with the producing artistic director and other artists involved in a production. The Talk Theatre discussion begins at 12 noon. The Skylight Bar & Bistro is open for lunch service beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Talkbacks: Fun and informative discussions with cast members are regularly scheduled following Thursday evening performances.
