How did this collaboration come about?

J. NICOLE BROOKS: I heard an audio version of Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting on this wonderful radio program called “The Play’s the Thing” on a local NPR affiliate in Los Angeles. I was listening to the program in my car on a Saturday night. When I parked I found that I could not leave the car until the program was over because it was just that good.

Thrilled by a play that I’d only just heard for the first time, I knew I wanted to present it to the ensemble. So I began the process of tracking down the play and its author, Ed Schmidt.

ED SCHMIDT: On my end, this came out of the blue. I wrote the first draft of this play at least twenty years ago. The last real production of the play that I’d been involved with was probably twelve or fifteen years ago. I always thought that it deserved a longer life. So when I got a call from my agent and he told me that the Lookingglass Theatre was interested in producing Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting I said, yes, of course. Then I met Nicky.

We had an amazing discussion about the play over breakfast. Because we had similar ideas about the play and we liked and respected each other, I knew that if Lookingglass decided to do the production it would be in good hands.

Our theme for the season is “in just one moment everything changed.” I’m curious to know what drew each of you to this moment in history.

ES: At the time I began writing Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting, I was reading an autobiography of Joe Louis. This autobiography was actually written in collaboration with an old sports writer named Art Rust, Jr. Though the book was a notoriously unreliable autobiography, it was a good story. In fact, there was one paragraph that said that in April of 1947, Branch Rickey, the president and general manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers, called together Joe Louis, Paul Robeson and Bill “Bojangles” Robinson so that they could inform Jackie Robinson about the racial issues he would face as a player in the major leagues. I thought that was pretty fascinating so I started to do research on this meeting and quickly realized that it never took place. Then I started to think, wouldn’t it be great to put these guys in a room together? This was the idea behind the play.

JNB: What drew me to the play quite honestly is that each of these men influenced my life both personally and professionally. When I was a senior in college and I was facing some sort of benign racism at school, I can remember going to the library and checking out books about Paul Robeson Lookingglass Theatre Company 3

because I knew that he had confronted racial issues in his lifetime. I knew that what I was dealing with was nowhere near the severity of what those men and women faced back then but I drew a great deal of strength from Paul Robeson. I just had a great respect for this actor, athlete and scholar who spent much of his life promoting equal rights for minorities around the world.

This guy was a true renaissance man and I think somewhere deep down inside I have always wanted to be like that.

ES: It’s interesting because what drew me to Robeson was listening to my father’s records. There I was in the middle of Wisconsin putting on a record and listening to him sing “nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen” in that amazing voice. And honestly, though I hadn’t seen too many troubles in my life, something just hit me in the gut when I heard his voice. It’s funny that Nicky and I are coming at this from completely different angles and yet we are ending up in the same place.

The play premiered in 1989. Does the meaning and relevance of the play change in the context of life in 2012?

ES: For me the play is largely about what is the best way to bring about change in a society. It is an age-old question as relevant today as it was then. Should a person take the one step at a time approach as Mr. Rickey believed, or should he or she come out with guns blazing like Mr. Robeson? To some degree it’s the Martin Luther King, Jr. / Malcolm X debate. Today it’s not unlike some Democrats asking Obama to bring about immediate fundamental changes while others are willing to go at a more conservative pace.

JNB: One of the things that tortures me after reading this play is how closely it parallels some of things going on in my life. I do strive and wish to be more like Paul Robeson but I feel a lot more like Joe Louis. I live in Los Angeles and work in the television and film industry.

black woman in LA because there are less than 7% of people of color working behind of the camera as writers and producers. And I feel like it’s difficult to take a stand. I’m getting caught in the “well they gave us that role once on that one TV show.” I really hate that. I want to scrape away at that. In that respect I am looking forward to the journey of working on this project because there’s a lot to be learned by observing the struggles of those men and women of that time. Mr. Rickey included.

It’s always an interesting challenge to cast historical characters. What advice do you have for your cast members?

ES: I’ve noticed in various productions that different actors tap into different aspects of the persona. For example, sometimes Joe Louis has been portrayed as an angry and volatile presence in the room. On the other hand, there have been some actors who have found something beyond the Robeson persona and portrayed him as being much more of a vulnerable character. It depends on the actor’s focus.

JNB: As a director there are two tracks I like to follow. There is the technical track. For example, if you’re playing someone that is well known in history and technically he or she has a certain way of speaking, you have to abide by that. That being said I don’t want the actors to feel like they are just emulating what they see. The second track is that actors need to be a truthful to the organic experience that they are having while portraying their character. This is the inherent hurdle you have to jump over when you’re dealing with historical dramas. But who the hell wouldn’t want to play these guys? I would kill to play any of these gentlemen. And we’ve assembled a company of some of the best actors you’re going to see on stage. Just about all of them have been known in Chicago theatre for years and years. Seeing them onstage together will be like a rock concert. Or, rather, an all star game.

A DIRECTOR’S NOTE from J. Nicole Brooks

IN THIS DIGITAL AGE of smart phones, sleek laptop computers, tablets and iPads smaller than a legal pad of paper, GPS, flat screen HD-3D televisions, and Youtube.com, it’s hard to imagine that just 64 years ago people actually gathered around a radio for news of the world. There were no personalized internet radio services that chose music based on your favorites. Streaming only referred to an actual stream of water. There were no blogs, podcasts or tweets to discuss Joe Louis‘ second battle against Max Schmeling. Bill Robinson’s bright smile wasn’t a featured portrait on Facebook or Tumblr. Inventors, engineers, developers and businessmen contributed to how we experienced war, sporting events, music, theatre and advertisements. Radio, one can argue, contributed to how we met a young man from Southern California named Jack Robinson.

After a long day of work, those who couldn’t attend the actual game at Ebbets, Comiskey, or Griffith Stadium J. Nicole Brooks with Artistic Associates Ant would gather hony Fleming III and Kevin Douglas around a radio and listen to the game.

This journey of Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting was inspired by the love of baseball that I learned from my family. We followed the MLB (Major League Baseball), and with time I learned about the Negro Leagues. I grew up on the South Side in the Washington 6 Lookingglass Theatre Company

Park neighborhood. When a ball player would knock a homerun across the Dan Ryan, you could hear the fireworks nearly 20 blocks away. Til this day, a tiny smile crawls across my mother’s face when she hears those fireworks. Back then she’d always say “That’s right boys, put it on the board. For my 9th birthday, I got an autographed baseball from White Sox great Minnie Minoso.

I didn’t care that it was a boys’ game. Receiving that ball made me want to break the rules.

Baseball is a game of geometry. It has strict rules. But to me, baseball is much like the theatre. Kids don’t care much about having a field. They’ll play anywhere they please. Vacant lots. The street. Schoolyard. They improvise, just like we do in the theatre.

Who needed bases when you could use a tree? A tire? A rock?

My favorite baseball game as a kid was called “Piggy.” We riffed on the rules of baseball, because in our minds we could play the game anyway we wanted--as long as you stepped up to the plate, and tried to knock that ball into another world. Knock it past the closed doors and limitations. Those doors were kicked in by eminent athletes like Moses Fleetwood, Josh Gibson, and Jackie Robinson. I hope that we can all put down the digital whatchamacallits for a few minutes, step onto a field, step into a theatre, and appreciate this important moment in our American history.

Kevin’s other Chicago credits include Orlando at Court Theatre and before that A Civil War Christmas at Northlight. He is also a member of MPAACT (MA’AT Production Association of African Centered Theatre). Regional credits include Actors Theatre of Louisville, Baltimore Centerstage, Kansas City Rep and Alliance Theatre in Atlanta . Kevin would like to thank God for this opportunity and Nicky Brooks.

ANTHONY FLEMING III (Joe Louis/Artistic Associate) was last seen on stage playing Levee in August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, directed by Ron O.J. Parson, at Actors Theater of Louisville and Milwaukee Rep. He last appeared at Lookingglass in the summer of 2010 in Lookingglass Alice, completing a run of 5 cities over 4 years and 445 performances as the Cheshire Cat. Other Lookingglass shows include Race, 1984, Manuscript Found in Saragossa, The Arabian Nights, Icarus, and Fedra. Mr. Fleming has also performed with Victory Gardens (Hambone, Free Man of Color, Denmark), Steppenwolf (Division St: America, Take Me Out, The Glass Menagerie), Chicago Theater Co.(Journal of Ordinary Thought, Cut Flowers), and Famous Door (Cider House Rules). JAVON JOHNSON (Jackie Robinson) is a founding ensemble member of Congo Square Theatre and a former NEA and TCG panelist. He is a multi-award-winning actor/writer whose awards include the Black Theater Alliance August Wilson Award, the Kennedy Center’s Lorraine Hansberry Award, Sundance Theatre Lab, etc. Acting credits include Barbershop 2, “Prison Break,” “One Life to Live,” “House of Payne,” Daddy’s Little Girls, Othello in Othello, Sterling in Two Trains Running, Harold Loomis in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Flip in Stick Fly as well as Dave Robinson in Lombardi on Broadway.

Javon has written national urban tours starring Vivica Fox, Boris Kodjoe, Richard Roundtree, Brian McKnight, James Avery, Robin Givens, Chante Moore and many others. Current projects: coproducer Invisible Life: The Movie with Edmonds Entertainment and eVision Films and Invisible Life: The Musical with original score by Ashford and Simpson.

ED SCHMIDT (Playwright) is best known for two plays he wrote and performed for small audiences in his Brooklyn home: The Last Supper, in which he prepared, cooked, and served a fourcourse meal for the audience; and My Last Play, in which, over the course of a hundred performances, he gave away all of his two thousand theater books, one to each audience member. SIBYL WICKERSHEIMER (Scenic Designer) is an award-winning set designer, artist, and an assistant professor in the USC School of Theatre. Sibyl’s regional design credits include productions at Lookingglass Theatre, Berkeley Repertory, The Kirk Douglas Theatre, The Geffen Playhouse, South Coast Repertory and associate set design for SITI Company’s Trojan Women (After Euripides) at the Getty Villa. She has designed in numerous theatres and companies in Southern California, including over 10 productions at The Actors’ Gang of which her designs for 1984 and The Trial of the Catonsville 9 have toured across the US, Greece, Hong Kong, Australia, Spain, Mexico, and to Colombia this spring. Sibyl has designed several unique projects such as a modular stage for the large scale dinosaur and sabertooth cat puppet performances at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Toy Story Musical for a Disney cruise ship, and the set for Diavolo Dance Company’s Transit Space. She is currently creating a large scale installation series with Janne Larsen entitled Big Haul, which has been installed at both Hi-Lite and Weekend Space. ALISON SIPLE (Costume Designer/Artistic Associate) has previously designed costumes for The Great Fire, Icarus, Fedra: Queen of Haiti, and Black Diamond at Lookingglass, where she is an Artistic Associate. Recent projects include Goodnight Moon (Chicago Children’s Theatre), Sophocles: Seven Sicknesses (Hypocrites), Taming of the Shrew (Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis) and Pirates of Penzance (Hypocrites). PROFILES (CONTINUED) RICK SIMS (Co-Sound Designer/Artistic Associate) has composed and designed sound for numerous Lookingglass productions and many other Chicago area theatres such as Steppenwolf, Congo Square, Writers’ Theatre, Lifeline, Griffin, The House, Court, ATC, Victory Gardens, Raven, Steep, Northlight and About Face. Out of town credits include Icarus at the Getty in L.A. with Lookingglass, and Gary at Boston Playwrights.

Rick has won a Jeff Award for lyrics in Hephaestus and a BTAA award for Congo Square’s Brothers of the Dust and has received several nominations for both awards. Rick is an Artistic Associate of Lookingglass Theatre Company and an associate designer with Aria Music Designs (Ray Nardelli and Josh Horvath). Rick also wrote the book, music and lyrics for Lookingglass’ Hillbilly Antigone.

MARIA DeFABO (Properties Designer) is captivated by creating and telling stories through the use of props. She is excited to be at Lookingglass again, where she has assisted with props for the past year. OLIVIA CASTILLON (Assistant Stage Manager) is thrilled to be joining the

Lookingglass family for her first full-length production with the company. Previously with Lookingglass, Olivia was production assistant on the concert version of Eastland as part of the “In The Works” series at Millennium Park. Other Chicago credits include: stage management apprentice on To Kill a Mockingbird and Middletown and assistant stage manager on Samuel J. and K. and Want with Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Olivia is also a resident artist with Theater Mitu, an experimental theatre company based out of NYC. Prior to her return to Chicago, credits with Theater Mitu include: assistant director on the workshop of DR.C (or how I learned to act in eight steps) at Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, assistant director on Blind Mouth Singing in collaboration with NAATCO, and production stage manager/tour manager on Death of a Salesman (BYU Tour).

ANDREW WHITE (Artistic Director/ Ensemble Member) has appeared in more than thirty Lookingglass productions, most recently Ethan Frome. He has taught in various Lookingglass Education and Community programs and residencies and recently co-founded a new company, Mosaic Experience, which uses an arts-based approach to dialogue about diversity.

He is currently writing a new play about the Eastland disaster of 1915 which will have its world premiere at Lookingglass this summer. His family in Evanston includes one wife, Shari, and two children, Julia and Asher.

RACHEL E. KRAFT (Executive Director) is in her seventh season as the Executive Director of the Lookingglass Theatre Company. Her 20-plus years of experience in arts management include over a decade as director of development at the Goodman Theatre, in addition to key roles with the Arts and Business Council, Northlight Theatre and the Chicago Dance Coalition. Rachel is a charter board member of the documentary film organization the Kindling Group, a trustee of the Jewish Women’s Foundation of Chicago, and serves on the Alumnae Council of the Chicago Foundation for Women. She is an officer of both the League of Chicago Theatres and Theatre Communications Group, the local and national service organizations for theater.

MARA BLUMENFELD recently designed My Fair Lady at Asolo Rep for Frank Galati, is working with Mary Zimmerman on The White Snake for Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and looks forward to being back home at Lookingglass for Cascabel and Eastland.

DAVID CATLIN appeared this winter in House Theatre’s production of The Nutcracker and will direct The Little Prince next spring at Northwestern. David teaches acting at Northwestern.

THOMAS J. COX appeared in Lookingglass’ production of The Great Fire this fall, and is spending the winter and spring being a stay-at-home dad with Joanie and serving as the Master Teacher for Lookingglass’ Education and Community Programs.

LAWRENCE E. DiSTASI is currently practicing handstands or working at The Actors Gymnasium Circus and Performing Arts School, where he is CoArtistic Director. He recently appeared in the concert version of Lookingglass’ Eastland for the “In the Works” series at Millennium Park.

CHRISTINE MARY DUNFORD is developing The Memory Ensemble, a Lookingglass-Northwestern (CNADC) program that uses improvisation to improve quality of life for people experiencing memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s Disease, and her adaptation of a book about living with memory loss is in development in gglassworks. She will be teaching as an adjunct instructor at Northwestern in 2012, and will be performing in Eastland with Lookingglass this summer.

LAURA EASON’s productions in 2011/2012 include: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Actors Theatre, Denver Center, St. Louis Rep, Kansas City and the New Victory in NYC) and Sex with Strangers (Sydney Theatre Company, Australia). JOY GREGORY’s play previously produced with Lookingglass, The Shaggs: Philosophy of the World, ran

DAVID KERSNAR is currently directing Pulcinella for Lookingglass and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as well as King of Hearts for Roosevelt University.

JOHN MUSIAL recently wrote and directed The Great Fire at Lookingglass.

DAN OSTLING has enjoyed being in Chicago teaching this fall. Upcoming projects include Eastland here at Lookingglass, Bruce Norris’s Clybourne Park at the Mark Taper Forum, The Convert directed by Emily Mann at McCarter Theater, and Mary Zimmerman’s White Snake at Oregon Shakespeare Festival.

DAVID SCHWIMMER produced and directed the film Trust which is available on iTunes. He and his wife welcomed their first child last May, and he is currently filming The Iceman.

JOEY SLOTNICK most recently starred in the world premiere of Ethan Coen’s Happy Hour at the Atlantic Theater Co. in New York City.

TRACY WALSH recently choreographed a dance for The Last Act of Lilka Kadison at Lookingglass. She works in a school where she also runs an after school drama program.

TEMPLE WILLIAMS is Executive Vice President and General Manager of 51 Minds, a television production company. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife Cyndi Finkle and their daughter Sullivan Clare Williams.

MARY ZIMMERMAN was in Boston this fall with Candide, which won five Joseph Jefferson Awards in Chicago and six Helen Hayes awards in Washington, D.C. last season. This winter she is directing an adaptation of the Chinese story White Snake at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
