After writing three deeply biting social commentaries – Waiting for Lefty, Awake and Sing, and Paradise Lost – three plays that took him from a starving artist lifestyle to a Hollywood writing contract of $2,500 a week – Odets’s return to NY and the Group Theater in 1937 was marked by a significant change - the shift from the political to the personal.

At the center of Golden Boy is a pair of individuals who have sacrificed their passionate dreams for a financially secure reality. They are tortured souls, haunted by their lost ideals but unable to face again the uncertain future without the comfort their choice has afforded them.

While Odets’s politics are certainly still present, they exist on the periphery – they inform the action, but are no longer the

driving force. They’ve been replaced with his own personal struggle, the demons he wrestled choosing between the poor and passionate advocate and the rich Hollywood golden boy.

And yet, despite his inner turmoil, he does not paint a picture that all is lost. The passionate advocate for a better life for the downtrodden, present in his early work, is still there. It’s heart beating, buried beneath layers of protective cynicism, but present none the less. In that same journal, he writes “Inner contradictions are not solved by throwing out half of the personality, but by keeping both sides tearing and pulling . . . until an amalgam on a high level of life and experience is achieved.”

In Joe and Lorna, Moody and Bonaparte – we feel that struggle, that tearing and pulling. Even though the physical boxing is occurring just offstage, the internal, emotional, and deeply personal struggle to find that balance remains front and center.

BIOGR APHIES JERRY BLOOM (Carp) was last seen in Paul Edwards’ Jeff-Award winning adaptation of Peyton Place at City Lit. He has also worked with Chicago Shakespeare, First Folio, Shaw Chicago, Strawdog, Raven, Eclipse, Collaboraction, Promethean, and now, happily, with Griffin. Jerry has the honor to have been in the original Chicago casts of Never The Sinner, Hauptmann, and Noises Off. He currently does character voices for commercials and unnecessarily violent video games.

DAVID CADY JR. (Mickey) is excited to be working for the first time with Griffin Theatre. His recent credits include Montague in Romeo and Juliet (Midsommer Flight) Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing (Fury Theatre), Adam in As You Like It and Polonius in Hamlet (both with (re)discover theatre), Millet in Fuddy Meers (Ka-Tet Theatre), and the Soothsayer in Julius Ceasar (Muse of Fire). He also worked for a year as a cowboy in Japan, at Universal Studios Japan. David has trained in Chicago with Black Box Acting School, and has studied First Folio with Susan Hart and Jeffrey Carlson. He has a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Eastern Illinois University.

JOHN CONNOLLY (Roxy) is glad to be back at the Griffin Theatre, with Jonathan Berry and working with a great cast. Last year he was Swanson in Griffin’s wonderful production of Flare Path then spent the summer doing Spoon River Anthologies with Provision Theater and rounded out the year as Nicky in Broadsword at The Gift Theatre. One of his favorite roles has been Klopstock in Bonheoffer’s Cost at the Provision Theater. Some of his other roles include Martin in Ruby Sunrise, Valeen in The Lonesome West and Martin in White People to name some the work he has done with The Gift Theatre where he is a proud founding member. John lives in Norwood Park, loves the Cubs, loves his family, loves his car and likes most of his friends. He is a comic book geek.

BIOGR APHIES JASON LINDNER (Tokio) is honored to be in this Griffin production and overjoyed to be working with Jon and the rest of this overwhelmingly talented cast and crew.

Jason is an actor and playwright whose work has been seen across the country and internationally in the UK. He is a proud graduate of the Yale School of Drama (‘02) and University of Michigan (‘99 - Go Blue!).

His play “The Half-Life of Memory” will be produced this spring by Cold Basement Productions, directed by Sophie Blumberg.

LAURA LAPIDUS (Anna) sends big thanks to all the folks at the Griffin for having her back. Previously, she understudied for Port.

Laura most recently appeared in Pains of Youth with Odradek Theatre/ Oracle B*Sides. Other credits include work with Redtwist Theatre, The Neapolitans, Artemisia, and Pavement Group, where she is a proud Artistic Associate. Laura teaches at Piven Theatre Workshop, and sometimes runs away in Spring to teach at the University of Michigan’s New England Literature Program. Right now though, she is thrilled to be staying put. Laura holds a BFA from the University of Michigan. Thanks to my family.

MORGAN MAHER (Siggie) is a proud ensemble member wih the Griffin.

Past productions include The Burnt Part Boys, No More Dead Dogs, and Stage Door. Other recent credits include The Crownless King with The House Theatre of Chicago, The Casuals with Jackalope Theatre Company, and She Kills Monsters with Buzz22 Chicago as part of Steppenwolf’s Garage Rep. NIALL MCGINTY (Frank/ Sam) is excited to be working with the Griffin Theatre Co. CONNOR MCNAMARA (Pepper) is thrilled to be working with The Griffin Theatre Co. for the first time. He was seen working over the last year in The Brig for The Mary Arrchie Theatre Co. and in The Intruder as part of Step Up Productions’ Holidaze Short Play Festival. As a writer, Connor’s short story Meeting God Jr is a current finalist for The Aeon Award, an Irish literary award in Science Fiction and Horror. He would like to thank all collaborative forces involved in this product, along with each of their respective accents.

Connor is a very proud graduate of The School at Steppenwolf, and is exclusively represented by Grossman & Jack Talent.

JOHNNY MORAN (Lewis/ Barker) first appeared on the Griffin stage last fall in The Burnt Part Boys. He has also performed with A Red Orchid (The Earl), The Hypocrites (Cabaret -

Winner of 5 Jeff Awards), Strawdog (Big Love, Red Noses, Marathon ‘33, Old Town), The NeoFuturists (Fear), and his home company, The Factory Theater (Ren Faire: A Fistful of Ducats, Easy 6, The New Adventures of Popeye, Black and Blue).

NINA O’KEEFE (Lorna) is proud to making her Griffin Theatre Company debut. Nina is a graduate of the School at Steppenwolf and Millikin University. She most recently appeared in Bedroom Farce at Eclipse Theatre Company.

Other Chicago credits include After the Fall, Democracy, Resurrection Blues and Candles to the Sun at Eclipse Theatre Company; Heddatron and The Ugly One at Sideshow Theatre; Our Town at Lookingglass Theatre; Enron at Timeline Theatre; Float at About Face Theatre; and Sketchbook 6 & 8 at Collaboraction Theatre. She is currently doing voiceover work for the radio series, Our Fair City now in it’s fifth season. Nina is represented by Stewart Talent Chicago. She is also a company member with Eclipse Theatre, and an Artistic Associate with Sideshow Theatre and Collaboraction. Love to Dad, Mom, Patrick and Erik. For Gramps.

PAUL POPP (Drake/ Driscoll) is stoked to be working with Griffin Theatre, Jon Berry and the extremely gifted cast and crew of Golden Boy. Previous Griffin shows include Stage Door directed by Robin Witt, Dead End, There’s A Girl In My Hammerlock and Picnic all directed by Jon Berry. Other credits include The Road To Ruin, Throwing Smoke and Incident at Vichy with Steep Theatre Company. Popp also played Kendricks in Job Opportunity, a play that took place a car moving about Chicago with Incognito. Film credits include Tito in The Mentor and Bob in The Winning Ticket.

MARK PRACHT (Moody) was raised near Colorado Springs, Colorado, and graduated from the University of Nebraska, Kearney. He’s worked as an actor, director and Golden Boy

playwright in Chicago since 2001. He served as Artistic Director of Brown Couch Theatre Company, where he directed Stop Kiss, and was an ensemble member of Stage Left Theatre Company, where he appeared in Pygmalion and Warped. Favorite roles include McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Open Eye Productions), Harry Teal in Dashiell Hamlet, Milt Shanks in The Copperhead, and The Creature in Frankenstein (all City Lit Theatre). Mark would like to thank Jon and the entire Griffin family for the opportunity to play this amazing role, and CByrd, who has always been steadfast in her love and support of my crazy adventures.

DAVID PRETE (Eddie) is honored his Chicago debut with the Griffin Theatre.

Prete is an actor, director, and writer who worked in NYC for fifteen years before moving to Chicago where he recently received his MFA in Directing from Northwestern. He cofounded Water Theatre Company in New York, and starred in the world premiere of On The Line at the Cherry Lane Theater produced by Mike Nichols and Bill Haber. He has also acted in Los Angeles and at many regional theaters in America, and in independent films screened at the Santa Barbara Film Festival, the Long Island Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of NYC. Chicago directing credits include: Fat Pig (Steppenwolf Garage) and Bruce Norris’ Purple Heart (Northwestern). He graduated from the New Actors Workshop where he studied with Mike Nichols, George Morrison, and the late Paul Sills. He also studied Grotowski’s plastiques for three years with Andre Gregory. His critically acclaimed books of fiction, Say That to My Face (2003) and August and Then Some (2012), a Chicago Tribune Editor’s Pick, were published by W.W. Norton.

NATE SANTANA (Joe) is beyond thrilled to be working with Griffin Theatre on Golden Boy. Previously, he has worked with Teatro Vista on White Tie Ball and Momma’s Boyz; City Lit Theater Company’s Comrades Mine; First Folio’s Merchant of Venice and Romeo and Juliet; Bohemian Theatre Ensemble’s The Rainmaker (Jeff Nomination); 6

BIOGR APHIES The Side Project’s world premiere of Slipping (subsequently produced at Smock Alley in Dublin, Ireland); and with The Phoenix Theatre of Indianapolis on References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot. He received his B.A. in Theatre from Valparaiso University and can next be seen in Oak Park Festival Theatre’s summer production of The Importance of Being Earnest.

NORM WOODEL (Bonaparte) Norm first appeared on the Griffin Stage in 2008 in On The Shore Of The Wide World. His Chicago Theatre credits include; Good For Otto by playwright David Rabe at The Gift Theatre - Haunting Julia - Eclipse Theatre, The Casuals - Jackalope Theatre, I Am Going To Change The World - Chicago Dramatists, Festen, a 2011 top pick by Chris Jones at Steep Theatre, and Tony Winner, Joe DiPietro’s F**king Men with Bailiwick Chicago. He’s been seen on Television in Matlock, The Dottie West Story, Early Edition, Elvis on ABC, and, in Music Videos with Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire. Woodel is one of Chicago’s most successful Voice Over Artists having voiced documentaries like When Weather Changed History on the Weather Channel, as well as, commercials for Subway and Promos for CBS News.

JONATHAN BERRY (Director) is a director and teacher in Chicago. He has been working with The Griffin since, 1998 and has been an Artistic Associate since 2000, where his productions include: Miller/Tysen’s The Burnt Part Boys, Sheik/ Sater’s Spring Awakening, the North American premiers of Simon Stephens Punk Rock (Jeff award Director, Lead Actor, and Ensemble) Port, and On the Shore of the Wide World, Stephen Sondheim’s Company, William Inge’s Picnic, JB Priestley’s Time and the Conways (Jeff nom – director/ensemble), Sidney Kingsley’s Dead End, Brendan Behan’s The Hostage and R.C. Sheriff’s Journey’s End. As an Artistic Associate at Steep, his productions include: John Donnely’s The Knowledge, David Eldridge’s Festen, Deirdre Kinahan’s Moment, Howard Korder’s The Hollow Lands and Brecht’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Steppenwolf productions include the SYA production of A Separate Peace, and the world premier of Melinda Lopez’s Gary as well as the staged reading of Suicide, Incorporate.

REBECCA BARRETT (Lighting Design) is thrilled to be designing Golden Boy. She has worked as a lighting designer and lighting coordinator in the Chicago area for the past 10 years. Her favorite designs include Golden Child (SRR) for which the design received an After Dark Award for Design/Technical Achievement; Pajama Game, You Can’t Take It With You, Never the Sinner, Glass Menagerie (NU); Dorian (Bailiwick). Rebecca recently received her MFA for Lighting Design at Northwestern University.

She graduated from Ithaca College in upstate NY with a B.F.A. in Theatrical Production Arts.

Upcoming designs include House Theatre’s production of Dorian.

DAN STRATTON (Set Design) is happy to be working with Griffin for the first time. Dan studied art at the University of Michigan and received his MFA from Northwestern University.

He teaches stage design at Columbia College, and North Central University. Design credits include The Tennessee Williams Project (The Hypocrites), Paulus (Silk Road Rising) Motortown (Steep) The Beautiful Dark (Red Twist Theatre), Invasion! MIEKA VAN DER PLOEG (Costume Design) has designed costumes for many Chicago theaters, including About Face Theatre, The House Theatre of Chicago, Next Theatre, The Building Stage, Albany Park Theater Project, Dog and Pony Theatre, RedTwist Theatre, Pegasus Players, the side project, and Filament Theatre Ensemble. She is currently the costume shop manager at Lookingglass Theatre. Further credits include wig and make-up work at The Lyric Opera, Chicago Opera Theater, and the Goodman, as well as assisting at Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Broadway in Chicago, Victory Gardens, and the Court Theatre.

RICK SIMS (Sound Design) has designed sound for numerous Chicago area theaters such as Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, Congo Square, Writers Theatre, Lifeline, Griffin, Chicago Childrens Theatre, The Hypocrites, The House, Court, ATC, Victory Gardens, The Raven, Steep, Northlight and About Face. Out of town credits include Icarus at the Getty in L.A. with Lookingglass, and Gary at Boston Playwrights.

Rick has won a Jeff Award for lyrics in Hepheastus and a BTAA award for Congo Squares’ Brothers In the Dust and Bulrusher, and has received several nominations for both awards. Rick is an artistic associate of Lookingglass Theatre Company and an associate designer with Aria Music Designs (Ray Nardelli and Josh Horvath). Rick also wrote the book, music and lyrics for Lookingglass’ Hillbilly Antigone.

KENDRA THULIN (Dialect Coach) is pleased to be working with Griffin again, having previously coached dialects for Flare Path.

Other dialect coaching credits: Northanger Abbey, Remy Bumppo, The Knowledge, Moment, Love and Money, Festen, Steep Theatre, Brighton Beach Memoirs, Raven Theatre and 25 Saints, Pine Box Theatre. Kendra is a professor at Columbia College Chicago, where in addition to teaching voice and acting, she has vocal and/or dialect coached over fifty-seven productions. Acting credits include A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, Stage Left Theatre, Motortown, Fallow, Luther, Pornography and Harper Regan (Non-Equity Jeff for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Principal Role) at Steep Theatre, where she is an ensemble member. Other credits include Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom and State of the Union, Strawdog Theatre, Hunger, Lifeline Theatre, Want, Steppenwolf First Look Repertory, The Goat, Red Twist Theatre.

AMANDA HERRMANN (Properties Designer) is very happy to be joining the team at Griffin.

Previously she has worked at Peninsula Players, American Blues Theater, Paramount Theater, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Lookingglass Theatre, Victory Gardens, Silk Road Rising, Lifeline Theatre and DePaul Theater School.

As a young designer, she is grateful for all the opportunities to work in this hard working community. Amanda is a graduate from Ripon College in Ripon, WI. CHRISTOPHER J. NEVILLE (Properties Designer) is excited to work with Griffin Theatre on this project. He has also worked at Theatre at the Center, Silk Road Rising, and Congo Square. Christopher is also a Properties Artisan at Paramount Theater in Aurora, IL and an Artistic Affiliate with American Blues Theater. Studying costume and properties design at Oakland University in Rochester, MI, he is thankful to be a young designer in the Chicago theater community.

JON RAVENSCROFT (Stage Manager) has been stage managing for 8 years, working primarily with the Griffin (Flare Path, Burnt Part Boys, Spring Awakening, Port, Company) and Steep Theatre (Moment, Pornography, Harper Regan). Other Chicago credits include The Wedding Singer with Haven Theatre, St. Crispin’s Day at Strawdog and work with Lifeline Theatre, Caffeine Theatre, Theatre 7 of Chicago, Dog & Pony Theatre Co., Chicago Children’s Theatre and The Sweat Girls.

JOE SCHERMOLY (Assistant Director/ Production Manager) is a proud Griffin Theatre company member where he has designed and built sets for many shows including Spelling Bee, Flare Path, Punk Rock, No More Dead Dogs, Port, Constant Wife.

Elsewhere in Chicago Joe’s set design work has been seen at Theatre Wit (Completeness, Seven Mammoths), Strawdog Theatre (Duchess of Malfi, Master and Margarita, Richard III), Lifeline Theatre (Tale of Two Cities, The Count of Monte Cristo, The City and The City), Sideshow Theatre (Idomeneus, The Ugly One) Eclipse (Beyond the Horizon, The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek) and more. Joe studied set design at Northwestern University and is the Technical Director at Lifeline Theatre. He has received two After Dark Awards and two Jeff Nominations. Thanks to Jon for letting him stretch his boundaries and to the cast for a making it so much fun.

Griffin Theatre Company

A N N UA L F U N D WILLIAM MASSOLIA (Artistic Director) is a founding member of the Griffin Theatre Company. He is the author of over 30 plays and adaptations including, Be More Chill, Little Brother, Stardust, Loving Little Egypt, Shakespeare’s Dog, Ash Can Alley, and The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. His play Letters Home recently completed a 19 city National Tour of North America and his children’s play, Frindle was presented in 50 US cities since 2009. Massolia is a 7-time Joseph Jefferson Award nominee for his work as a playwright. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, Mr. Massolia is a past member of the League of Chicago Theatres Board of Directors, a recipient of an IAC Playwriting Fellowship Award and currently sits on the theatre advisory panel for the Illinois Arts Council.

RICHARD BARLETTA (Artistic Director) is a founding member of the Griffin Theatre Company. In his almost 30 years of theatre he’s directed over 125 productions, many of these with the Griffin. Richard holds an MFA in Directing from the Goodman School of Drama and a BS in theatre from the University of Evansville. In addition he has directed productions at the Theatre School, DePaul University and Loyola University in Chicago. He received Joseph Jefferson Awards for both directing and ensemble with the Midwest premiere of Stags and Hens.
