NOTES FROM THE PL AY WRIGHT In his book The Question of God, Dr. Armand M. Nicholi, Jr. writes, “Did Freud and Lewis ever meet? The possibility is tantalizing. After Freud immigrated to England…(a) young Oxford professor visited Freud during this time but has not been identified. Might it have been Lewis?”

His speculation sparked this play.

In 1939, the year in which the play is set, Dr. Freud is at the end of a long and brilliant career and Prof. Lewis has begun to build his own.

Born in 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia, Freud received his first doctorate degree in medicine in 1881. Five years later, he married Martha Bernays and established his own private practice. The writings he became famous for began with Studies on Hysteria written with Josef Breuer, published in 1893, the year Freud’s daughter Anna was born.

The early 1900s brought the publication of The Interpretation of Dreams, The Psychopathology of Everyday Life, Three Essays on Sexuality, and the beginning of his relationship with Carl Jung which deteriorated with their disagreements about the nature of the unconscious. Their friendship ended in 1913 when Freud’s Totem and Taboo was published. Later books included The Ego and the Id, Civilization and Its Discontents and Moses and Monotheism. Internationally known in his lifetime, Freud’s career caused much controversy, but his importance as a founding figure of Psychoanalysis is undeniable and lasting.

Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1898. At the time this play is set, Professor C. S. Lewis had yet to write the masterpieces he is most remembered for, including The Chronicles of Narnia – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; The Screwtape Letters; or his influential writings on Christianity including Mere Christianity, Surprised by Joy and The Four Loves. These books have sold millions of copies and continue to be read and beloved.

Lewis’ conversion from atheism to theism took place when he was 33 years old.

On September 3, 1939, the date of their meeting in Freud’s Last Session, Dr. Freud was 83 years old to Prof. Lewis’ 41. Though Lewis was half Freud’s age, the clash between these two men is timeless.

His play Dr. Ruth, All The Way, will premiere this summer at the Barrington Stage Company and The Fabulous Lipitones, a musical comedy co-written with John Markus, will premiere at the Theatrical Outfit in Atlanta in Summer, 2013. With composer Randy Courts Mark has written the musicals The Gifts Of The Magi, Jack’s Holiday and Johnny Pye. He wrote the Tammy Wynette Musical Stand By Your Man for the Ryman Theater in Nashville. Television work includes Writer and Creative Consultant for “The Cosby Show”. He cowrote Carroll Ballard’s film Duma and produced and directed the documentary MY DOG, An Unconditional Love Story, with Richard Gere, Glenn Close, Edward Albee and others. Mark wrote the award winning children’s book “Three Cups”. He is a member of the DGA and the WGE. Mark is an Associate Artist of the Barrington Stage Company and recipient of the William Inge Festival’s New Voices Award.

DR. ARMAND M. NICHOLI, JR. (Author, The Question of God) is Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital and has been elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association “In Recognition of Significant Contributions to Psychiatry.” He has also been nominated several times for the Harvard Medical School Prize for excellence in teaching. He is the author of The Question of God, made into a PBS series, and editor and co-author of The Harvard Guide to Psychiatry.

TYLER MARCHANT (Director) directed the World Premiere of Freud’s Last Session by Mark St. Germain at Barrington Stage Company (where it extended and became the longestrunning show in the theatre’s history).

He also directed its subsequent New York transfer, first to the Marjorie Dean Theatre and later to New World Stages.

Tyler has worked as a freelance director and also served for over six years as the Associate Artistic Director at Primary Stages from 2000-2006. His work on new plays led him to Primary Stages where he worked with playwrights such as Terrence McNally, Horton and Daisy Foote, Stephen Belber, John Henry Redwood, A.R. Gurney, Lee Blessing, Michele Lowe and many others. Other New York directing work includes several productions, workshops and readings of new plays by Neil LaBute, Edwin Sanchez, Stephen Belber, Steven Dietz, Victor Lodato, Julia Jordan, Dan O’Brien, Anthony Clarvoe and Lucy Thurber among others. From 20012006, Tyler served as the Vice President of the Association of Non-Profit Theatres Companies (ANTC) in New York City. Recipient: Doris Duke/Andrew W. Mellon/TCG “New Generations Grant.”

Tyler currently teaches Directing and Acting at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, where he began teaching in 2007. Tyler received his M.F.A. in Directing at the University of South Carolina and is a member of SDC. JASON EPPERSON (Production Manager) has been a freelance manager, producer, and designer in the Chicago area for the past 12 years. In addition, he is the General Manager of the Mercury Theater, where he has been involved in it’s recent re-opening and many renovation projects. Jason is the head of the Technical Theater program at his alma mater, Columbia College Chicago, one of the largest theater departments in the world. by Artistic Director Julianne Boyd.

BSC’s mission is threefold: to present top-notch, compelling work; to develop new plays and musicals; and to find fresh, bold ways to bringing new audiences into the theatre- especially young people. BSC garnered national attention when it premiered William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin’s musical hit The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in 2004, which later transferred to Broadway. Freud is BSC’s 13th world premiere production. Next up this summer - the world premiere of Mark St. Germain’s Dr. Ruth, All the Way, a one-woman play based on the life of sexpert Dr. Ruth Westheimer.
