ABOUT NORTHWESTERN SET TLEMENT

Northwestern University Settlement Association (Northwestern Settlement) nurtures, educates, and inspires children and families in need, empowering them to take personal responsibility and attain self‐sufficiency. Since its founding in 1891 by Northwestern University (as a separate and financially independent institution), Northwestern Settlement has served Chicago’s West Town community by offering wrap‐around services that holistically meet the complex needs of our “neighbors.” Through a wide variety of programs and services that focus on education, social services, and the arts, Northwestern Settlement staff and volunteers serve more than 40,000 neighbors each year.

We believe it is important to invest in our children to ensure a brighter future. Our children and youth programs have been carefully designed in order to provide activities that are appropriate both physically and developmentally for each child. Our youngest children are served by our Head Start program; children then have the opportunity to enroll into Rowe Elementary School. Children can also take part in our School Age Program (an after school program), and youth and teens have the option to attend our House In The Wood summer camp. The AmeriCorps Project YES! team works with children at Northwestern Settlement and eight local schools, in addition to mobilizing community volunteers.

We also believe in empowering and supporting our neighbors and the family as a whole.

We have a multitude of programs that provide the support to empower our families to tackle the challenges they encounter and to grow and thrive in the West Town community. Our Emergency Services Program meets immediate needs through a food pantry, direct assistance, and holiday services. Adventure Stage Chicago creates dynamic and transformative theatre for young audiences that activates the imagination, inspires dialogue and strengthens community among families, educators and artists.

F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R The creation of Augusta and Noble began over a year ago when I asked playwright Carlos Murillo to collaborate with us on a play that explored the lives of real people in our West Town neighborhood. After ten years of making plays about somewhere else, we felt it was time we tell a story that takes place right outside our lobby doors. The community we find ourselves a part of is diverse and growing. So how might we, as a theatre company, be seen as an important—as an essential—fixture to the continuing evolution of our neighborhood?

By telling stories that are immediately relevant to our neighbors’ lives.

By offering our space and the experience of our productions as a safe place to explore difficult subject matter.

By encouraging constructive dialogue amongst our viewers, especially once they exit the building and go about their daily lives.

By involving the fullest spectrum of ages in the conversation because young people have a valuable and legitimate perspective on the happenings of our world. Indeed, they deserve a seat at the table of our most difficult discussions.

This impulse to engage you in a thoughtful, socially conscious experience stems from our roots as a program within the Northwestern Settlement House, a social service organization with a 120-year track record of doing good and important work here in West Town. From its earliest days, West Town distinguished itself as a gateway for immigrants. And so Carlos and I embarked on a great journey of listening to our neighbors tell us how they came to Chicago and why. And one reason consistently rang out above all others: the promise of a better life.

Enter the Castillo family, a fictional set of characters that should still be very familiar to you.

Daughter Gabi struggles with homework, with getting along with her parents and her brother, with making friends. Her parents struggle with raising a family, with making money, with watching their children grow up. They also struggle with a singular secret that jeopardizes the stability of their family and the future they imagine for themselves.

As part of the Settlement legacy, Adventure Stage offers Augusta and Noble as an invitation for you to imagine new possibilities for yourself whether your family came to Chicago last year or last century. We want to spark the sensation of hope and possibility in a world that is too often wracked with hardship. We want to open up conversations that are inclusive of everybody – both young people and adults – because we believe that young people have an important role to play in making a positive difference in the world and elders have everything to gain by listening.

Augusta and Noble is the final destination for the Castillo family who came to Chicago many years ago. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to wonder how you got here.

PERFOR MER BIOGR APHIES Kathryn Acosta (Gabi understudy) is so excited to be working with Adventure Stage Chicago!

In Chicago, she has had the opportunity to work with Northlight (in conjunction with the Chicago History Museum), The Factory Theatre, Babes with Blades, as well as others.

Kathryn graduated from Columbia College Chicago last spring. She is also a certified advanced actor/combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors.

Kieran Kredell (Ricardo Wojciekowski) is pleased to be returning to Adventure Stage Chicago, where he was last seen as Pavel in And A Child Shall Lead. He is an actor, writer, and performance artist based in Chicago since 2008. He is one half of the dance/comedy/performance art duo LADY/WATCH, seen regularly at Salonathon and recently featured at the Metro. He holds a BA in Theater and Religion from Wesleyan University, and has trained at the American Conservatory Theatre and at Second City.

Other recent acting credits include: The Counterfeiters, The Dinner Party Project (Dog & Pony), Alien Queen (Scooty & JoJo), Last of My Species, The Astronaut’s Birthday (Redmoon), The Flowers (About Face).

Gabi Mayorga (Gabi Castillo) is originally from Jalisco, Mexico, raised in the New Mexican desert and graduated in 2010 from The Theatre School at DePaul University. She is honored to make her Adventure Stage debut with this wonderful team. Her credits include Crave (Rivendell), Sonnets for an Old Century (Steppenwolf Garage), Ezperanza Rising (Goodman Theatre), Electricidad (Merle Reskin Theatre), and Las Soldaderas (Aguijon). She has also done a few commercials and can be seen in

some independent films such as La Trinchera Luminosa del presidente Gonzalo and Lost in Isle 4.

Miguel Nunez (El Coyote) is very excited to make his ASC debut. He was last seen in the world premiere of I Put the Fear of Mexico In’em with Teatro Vista. Miguel has worked in Chicago theaters including: Victory Gardens, Profiles Theatre, Pine Box Theatre, Vitalist Theatre, The Mammals, Lifeline Theatre, Halcyon, The Gift Theatre, Salsation!, Redmoon and many others. You can catch him in some commercials, films and some web series. He grew up in Venezuela where he started his acting career. Miguel will next be seen in Lifeline Theatre’s summer production of The Three Musketeers.

Isabel Quintero (Dolores Castillo) is so happy to return to Adventure Stage where she was last seen in The Blue House, by Jose Cruz Gonzalez. Ms. Quintero has worked around town at The Goodman, Steppenwolf, Teatro Luna, Congo Square, Victory Gardens, American Theatre Company, Lifeline, Halcyon, Chicago Children’s Theater, Teatro Vista, and many others, in plays like Esperanza Rising, The House on Mango Street, The Reluctant Dragon, The Mark of Zorro, The Magic Ofrenda and more. This past summer, Ms. Quintero worked with the Chicago Public Library sharing bilingual stories with children and parents all across the city.

Tommy Rivera-Vega (Jesus Castillo) is thrilled to be making his ASC debut!

Ivan Vega (Reymundo Castillo) is thrilled to return to Adventure Stage Chicago where he was last seen in Katrina: The Girl Who Wanted Her Name Back. He is an actor, co-founder & Executive Director of UrbanTheater Company (UTC).

Carlos has taught at the University of Iowa, the Kennedy Center, and is an Associate Professor at The Theatre School of DePaul University, where he heads the playwriting program. Carlos is also a resident playwright at Chicago Dramatists and New Dramatists. This is his first time working with Adventure Stage.

Tom Arvetis (Director, Producing Artistic Director) is indebted to the talented playwright, designers and performers who have brought this project to life. Tom’s most recent directing projects include Six Stories Tall with ASC last fall and the touring remount of 500 Clown Trapped. Other directing credits for ASC include And A Child Shall Lead by Michael Slade; Katrina: The Girl Who Wanted Her Name Back by Jason Tremblay; The Blue House by José Cruz González; and A Woman Called Truth by Sandra Fenichel Asher. Tom also wrote and directed I Dream in Blues with Chicago blues veteran Katherine Davis. His adaptation of Sharon Creech’s award-winning novel Walk Two Moons (seen here last season) is about to receive another production at Prime Stage in Pittsburgh, PA, and will soon be published

by Dramatic Publishing. Tom was an Ann Shaw Fellow with TYA/USA in 2009 and is a board member with the American Alliance for Theatre and Education. He couldn’t do any of this without the love and support of his wife, Dana, and their three beautiful daughters—Lyra, Simone and Vivian.

Dani Bryant (Assistant Director/Dramaturg) is a Chicago-based devisor, director and performer. Originally from Tennessee, Dani attended The North Carolina School for the Arts and received her BFA from the Hartt School of Theater. She is an artistic ensemble member of Adventure Stage Chicago where she also serves on staff. Away from ASC she is the founder of Knife & Fork-- A Chicagobased theatre company committed to transforming the way stories are told about food & body politics. Dani’s plays include Binge, Kitchen, Feminists Who Lunch, and Diets Are A Girl’s Best Friend with Walkabout Theater, Molè with Adventure Stage Chicago & The Last Meal Man with Collaboraction.

Dani is currently an Artist in Residence at Victory Gardens Theater.

Kitty Campbell (Prop Design) is delighted to be involved with her second production at Adventure Stage. Kitty hails from Maine and holds a BFA in Art History from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Her most recent design credits include: The Feast at the Prop Theatre, Six Stories Tall at Adventure Stage, and Flare Path at Theatre Wit. She would like to thank her excellent family and friends for their continued support. She would also like to thank Adventure Stage for letting her be a part of such an engaging and exciting show.

Morgan Gire (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be returning to Adventure Stage Chicago.

Morgan is a freelance stage manager in Chicago and has had the wonderful fortune of working with such companies as Halcyon Theatre, Actor’s Training Center and The Chicago Sketch Fest.

Becca Jeffords (Lighting Design) is thrilled to be joining the talented team at Adventure Stage to bring to life the story of Augusta and Noble. She is a Chicago area lighting designer who recently received her MFA from Northwestern University. Recent designs include Best of the Best Volume 1 (Evanston Dance Ensemble), Machinal (Northwestern University), Sweeney Todd (Hope College), Funeral Wedding: The Alvin Play (The StrangeTree Group), South of Settling and The Glass Menagerie (Steppenwolf Garage), and Romeo and Juliet (Two Pence Shakespeare).

Simon Lashford (Scenic Design) is delighted to work with Adventure Stage Chicago again after recently designing Walk Two Moons. Simon is currently the Lead Designer for RedBox Workshop in Chicago where he designs theatre, children’s environments and museum exhibits. He also runs his own design and drafting company.

Past Chicago Theatre credits include set design for Chicago Dramatists Voyeurs de Venus and Hickory Dickory; set, puppet and mask design for TriArt’s Offending Shadows, Seashore and Freedomland as well as set design for Fortinbras with Defiant Theater and Great Society with Famous Door. Past company credits include San Francisco and Santa Fe Opera. Simon received his B.A. with honors in Theatrical Design from Virginia Tech. Love to Allison, Wyatt and Willow for their support.

Nathaniel Nesheim-Case (Assistant Stage Manager) has been an actor, designer, and stage manager for over 50 shows in Chicago and Minneapolis, and learns something new every day. This is his first production with Adventure Stage, and he is proud to be a part of this wonderful show.

Rob Steel (Sound Design & Original Composition) Recent credits include Cymbeline, Twelfth Night and Hamlet at Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival, the films Undocumented, Blood on the Plain, Good Hair and Other Dubious Distinctions, Scarlet, Father/Man, the video game Zombie Yoga, the video installation Climate of Uncertainty at DePaul University’s Art Museum and Lobster Stew for Soprano and Virtual Instruments. His opera, Frequency Response, in conjunction with Chicago Opera Vanguard is in progress towards a workshop in Winter 2014. He is on faculty at the School of Cinema and Interactive Media at DePaul University where he runs the Sound Design program and the Sound Studios. He is a recipient of After Dark awards and awards from ASCAP and the Illinois Arts Council.

SPOTLIGHT ON CARLOS MURILLO ASC: Can you describe the collaborative process this play has gone through up to this point?

CM: We first started talking about the project a year and a half ago.

When Tom [ASC’s Producing Artistic Director] asked me to write it, I began attending Adventure Stage’s theatre workshops to start to get to know the community. It was a great mixture of young people and adults, and a lot of our interactions left a deep impression on me. Over the summer and early fall we identified people from around the community to interview.

Many were kind enough to sit down with us and tell their stories, which were amazing to hear. Then I started writing – the character of Gabi and her story began to emerge.

Tom and I would meet periodically to discuss story and scenes I was writing. The input had been really useful – again since this is my first time writing for a young audience, it was great to see the work through the lens of someone with much more experience in this particular area. In November we invited actors in to read the work in progress. I am presently in the process of completing the play. We start rehearsals at the end of February.

ASC: Where did the idea for this particular play begin?

CM: It evolved over several months. We’d interviewed a good number of people in the community, heard their stories. While every story was unique, there were a number of issues that would come up time and time again. Immigration was a big theme – the challenges of adapting to a new country, culture, economic situation – especially when the question of legal status is in play. How does all this impact the children of immigrants?

Where do they stand in relation to their identities? From that, a number of images arose – the idea of a trickster coyote coming face to face with a young girl who is navigating a major transitional moment in her life being the main one.

ASC: What’s your relationship to the West Town neighborhood?

CM: I didn’t have much of a relationship prior to working on this project. But since spring of 2012, when we really started to work on this project, I’ve spent a lot of time at the Settlement House, met a lot of people through the Adventure Stage theatre classes, and had the opportunity to do a lot of interviews with members of the community. What I’ve learned is that West Town is an incredibly diverse community with a rich and evolving history.

ASC: Who and what inspired the central character of Gabi?

CM: I would say that Gabi is a composite of a lot of inspirations… As part of our research we interviewed a number of young people around Gabi’s age. Hearing their stories was a huge inspiration. Also talking to parents of kids that age, I learned a great deal about that particular age range, and the kind of worries, concerns, hopes parents have for their kids.

There are people from the deeper past that also inspired me – folks dealing with the very problem she’s facing in the play. And lastly – I have a nine year old daughter, Eva, who is very bright and loves watching plays – I wanted to create a character she could relate to, feel for and root for.

ASC: How was your process in creating Augusta and Noble different than some of your previous work?

CM: It’s very different. This play is the first that I’ve written for young audiences, so it’s August and Noble

been a great learning experience. Being new to this kind of storytelling, it’s been great to work closely with Tom and the company as I develop the piece – he knows this audience extremely well and the kinds of stories that resonate with them. Tom has been amazing in guiding me in the right direction, while honoring my own unique methods of storytelling.

It’s also been an incredible experience to get to know members of the community and to hear their stories. I hope that what I’ve written is a positive, yet truthful reflection of their experience.

ASC: What do you hope an audience takes away from the story you’ve created?

CM: There is so much debate in this country about immigration, especially the status of immigrants that come without legal clearance. It’s very tempting to get caught up in the politics of it and lose sight of individual lives and what’s at stake for families. Seeing this issue through the eyes of a young girl hopefully humanizes the issue and hopefully will inspire healthy discussion.

ASC: When did you first start writing? Was there a particular moment when you realized that playwriting was what you wanted to do with your life?

CM: From the time I was a child I was always writing, making up stories and acting in plays. When I was a teenager I thought I wanted to be an actor, and began to study it seriously in college. I did a semester at the National Theatre Institute at the O’Neill Center in Connecticut when I was 19. I became very excited about writing plays there – there was a playwriting course that met once a week and I found that I was more focused and intensely driven in that class than any of the acting classes I was taking. I also wrote my very first play… I never looked back.

ASC: What in this play speaks to your own life? Is there a particular character you most identify with?

CM: I am the child of immigrants – my mother was from Puerto Rico, and my father was born in Colombia. I grew up with one foot firmly in the culture of my parents and another foot firmly planted in American culture. It’s a strange duality that really has shaped me, my world view and my work. In that sense I deeply identify with Gabi, who is trying hard to figure out who she is as the child of Mexican immigrants. I also identify with the parents – as a parent myself, I am always hyper aware of the decisions I make in relation to my kids and how it will impact them. Sometimes you do things with good intentions, but the outcome can be negative – I really feel Dolores’ and Reymundo’s dilemma. They want the best for their children and are doing what they think is right for them. But parents make mistakes, but hopefully they can learn from them and do better. In the end, my job as a playwright is to identify with ALL of my characters, even characters like the Coyote, who is the villain of the piece. You have to acknowledge all of your characters’ humanity….

ASC: What message or feeling are you hoping audiences will walk away with?

CM: I want audiences to really experience the world through Gabi’s eyes as she goes on her journey. She’s just a kid who is learning some difficult and painful truths about her family’s history, and the challenges of being an undocumented immigrant in this country.

I want people to feel hopeful that on the other side of the journey there will be hope for her and all like her.

by Sandy Asher and inspired by their own personal stories. Trailblazers is a mentorship program that pairs one young person (age 12-15) with a professional theater artist. These mentor pairs work alone and together as a group, using art to form strong relationships, explore the best parts of themselves and connect with their community.
