I was born in 1944. I grew up in a small town in central Illinois called Eureka. We had a grandfather for president. Dwight David Eisenhower. He made us feel good.

He made us feel safe. Eureka was a farming community of a mere 2400 people. It was quiet. Neighborhoods. Everyone knew everyone else, and everyone knew all their kids. People took care of each other. It was safe. No crack cocaine, no heroine. No guns in schools. AIDS was nowhere in sight. Cigarettes were the drug of choice. Sometimes beer. Never whiskey or wine, even though our parents might have a…shhh…“highball” over the holidays.

It was Verona!

In 1962 I went to college. The University of Illinois. Population? 35,000 students!

Whiskey! Wine! “Trouble” that starts with “T” that rhymes with “P” and stands for “pool!” Diners open all night! Fraternities! Sororities! Parties! Parties. And more parties. Girls! Girls! And more girls! Girls that didn’t look like the girls in Eureka!

That didn’t act like the girls in Eureka! Girls that kissed like the French! I flunked out of the University of Illinois in my freshman year with a 1.4 out of a 5.0 GPA! It was Milan!

Other guest artists lending their talents to this production are our sound designer Sarah Pickett and prop master, Charles Trieloff. This production also marks a kind of farewell performance for many our graduating MFA acting, design, and directing students whose work you have been viewing on our stages for the last three seasons. So I express my thanks for their providing our stages and Department with many memorable moments. Of equally great importance, a huge bow of thanks (imagine this being done with full kabuki conviction) from me to our great undergraduate students who have performed on stage, worked on building sets or costumes, hung lights, run light or sound boards, stage managed, were part of a run crew or contributed in any way to our productions this season. The wind beneath our wings, you are why we’re here.

I now bow my head three times in succession to my production staff. Gratitude for all the labors you have performed in making everything work, for the care shown to students and for caring about Theatre. They say it takes a village to raise a child; Theatre is very much the same. It takes many hands and many ideas to make it blossom and there are many different types of blooms.

When we bring in guest artists to work with our students, this inspires them and exposes them to other ways of making theatre, seeing that there are many varied paths which all can lead to memorable moments. We thank the College of Letters and Science Anonymous Fund Committee for making these opportunities possible.

And now dear patron, you are here to complete the ohana or family. I thank you most deeply for being here to see the plays the Department offers during a season and I pray that you will continue to support our students in their efforts to bring theatre to full flower here at UW-Madison.

Two Gentlemen of Verona, 1592

Two Gentlemen of Verona is most likely Shakespeare’s first comedy, and is considered to be a precursor to his more famous comedies. The play was conceivably based on two separate texts, a Spanish prose story written in 1542 by Jorge de Montemayor entitled Diana and a story told by Boccaccio found in Thomas Elyot’s Book Named the Governor (1531). The combination of these two plots creates Shakespeare’s plot of two pairs of lovers and two close friends.

The play has the smallest cast ever written by Shakespeare, and rarely do more than two or three people speak in a scene. The play also contains many inconsistencies and unclear details, which make the play, at times, appear haphazard, confusing or even insulting. Though the play has obvious problems, the techniques and structure utilized in Two Gentlemen of Verona are reflected in later plays: two lovers, fickle passions, betrayal amongst friends, banishment and disguise. These issues arise within the course of the drama, but are neatly (almost too neatly) put to rest during the final scene in the forests outside of Milan.

Young Loves, Young Mistakes Two Gentlemen of Verona is a play about first loves, best friends and the mistakes made when transitioning from childhood to adulthood. As the play begins, we find two best friends, Proteus and Valentine, who must leave one another and the comforts of home to become “gentlemen.” This production foregrounds that Proteus and Valentine are young, inexperienced men who leave their small, provincial home in Verona for the booming metropolis of Milan. Once in Milan, Valentine and Proteus encounter many circumstances that test them as friends, and as men. Following this same thought, the excitement of being an adult can also outshine the true importance of tough decisions.

In Two Gentlemen of Verona, we watch Proteus, Valentine, Julia and Silvia struggle with decisions as they stand on the threshold of adulthood. Some moments seem overthought, and others hasty, but all reflect the youth and inexperience of these four characters. They are all young adults who are making the mistakes of children, and thankfully every mistake made within the course of the play can be rectified. Ultimately, the play is about forgiveness. Throughout the plot mistakes are made, hearts are broken, vows are tossed aside and respect is forgotten, but as the play comes to a close forgiveness and healing is proffered and accepted.

The play both hails male friendship, and to a degree devalues, albeit comically, the male-female love dynamic. Two Gentlemen of Verona explores for the first time in Shakespeare’s body of work the concept of metamorphosis within love, specifically 4 University Theatre

T WO G E N T S I N T H E C A N O N ( c o n t .) the change in a man when he loves a woman. These changes, as the play explores, are not always for the better, and can bring out the worst characteristics in a man.

On the other hand the love shared between two male friends yields an elevating level of intimacy. As a result Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of the mended friendship. It is only once Proteus and Valentine forgive one another that the romantic relationships can also be mended and marriages may be assumed to take place. Though the play stresses the importance of forgiveness and friendship it does so at the expense of the female characters. At this point in his career Shakespeare had not yet mastered the nuanced and complex endings seen in many of his more famous comedies, but instead he allows for reconciliation between Proteus and Valentine too quickly and at the cost of both women. Neither Julia nor Silvia are consulted at the end of the play, and Silvia is silent for the final moments of the play. These moments draw attention to the importance of the friendship between Valentine and Proteus, but challenge the modern audience by favoring the male voice over the female voice. The ending cannot be fixed entirely without severe rewrites or cuts, thus this production has re-arranged the final scene to create a more balanced account and to allow the women to have at least some say in their futures.

William Bolz (Duke) last appeared on this stage as Boris Kolenkhov in You Can’t Take it with You. Now in the final semester of the MFA acting program, William has been seen on campus as Jim Casy in The Grapes of Wrath, Dr. Arnholm in The Lady from the Sea, and the Father in Blood Wedding. He recently performed the one-actor play Underneath the Lintel as his Masters thesis production. Long active in Madison area theatre, he has worked with American Players Theatre, Madison Rep, CTM, Strollers, and Madison Theatre Guild. He can also be seen in Blame Society Films’ locally produced internet comedy series Chad Vader.

Liz Cassarino (Julia) is an MFA Acting Candidate finishing her last semester and is thrilled to be playing Julia as her last role here at UW-Madison, and to once again, share the stage with all of her wonderfully talented classmates.

semester of study in the MFA Acting program. Previous favorite roles include The Groom in Blood Wedding, The Ringmaster in Elephant’s Graveyard, Macduff in Macbeth, and a bevy of characters in the one-man show Pounding Nails in the Floor with my Forehead. Kristin Hammargren (Silvia) is excited for her final production at UW-Madison to bring together such a high-caliber cast, crew, artistic team and playwright.

Originally from Minnesota, she has a degree in theatre and vocal performance from Lawrence University and is mere weeks away from mastering the fine art of acting here at UW. Past UT roles include Cinderella in Into the Woods, The Bride in Blood Wedding and Agnes in UT’s co production with Forward Theater of The Farnsworth Invention. Kristin recently premiered Discovering Austen, her original one-woman show about Jane Austen for her MFA Thesis project. Thank you so much to the acting faculty for three years of support. Thank you to my family for being here. That five-hour drive means more than you know. Thank you, Tom, for caring enough to watch my “Who is Silvia” character study power point. And thank you for supporting theatre.

Peter Hiller (Outlaw) will have a BA in philosophy and theater in a few weeks.

With his degree, he plans to take the obvious next step: architecture school— after spending some time in Nairobi working in documentary film. Peter is grateful to First Stage Theater Academy, where he spent eight summers and took his very first Shakespeare class just after his tenth birthday. This past fall, Peter was heard live on WPR’s Old-Time Radio Drama broadcast of The Time Machine.

Other Shakespearean credits include A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Puck) and Twelfth Night (Sebastian). He has a rabbit named Charles.

Trevon Jackson (Outlaw) is an MFA acting graduate student from Austin, TX completing his final semester currently studying at UW-Madison. “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” marks his ninth Wisconsin theatrical production.

Trevon made his WI debut in 2009 in Federico Garcia Lorca’s “Blood Wedding”, followed by “Into the Woods” (The Narrarator), Music Theater of Madison’s “The Wild Party” (Sam), John Steinbeck’s “The Grapes of Wrath” adapted for stage (Noah/others), CTM’s production of “Most Valuable Player” (Jackie Robinson), “You Can’t Take it with You” (Donald) at University Theatre, Forward Theatre Company’s “The Farnsworth Invention” (Stan Willis) and most recently August Wilson’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (Levee).

Joe Lullo (Valentine) is thrilled to be a part of The Two Gentlemen of Verona.

Joe is currently pursuing his MFA in acting at UW Madison. Joe has spent the past two summers out at APT, and has also performed with Madison Opera.

Joe has also acted at summer stock and dinner theater venues in Wisconsin, and he toured the states with CLIMB Theater and Missoula Children’s Theater.

Joe would like to thank his mother and father for encouraging him to follow his dream, and Ken Hill and Bob Amsden for all their support. Joe would also like to thank Alanna Reeves for all her support and love.

Stuart Mott (Musician/Outlaw) is a junior at UW Madison majoring in Theatre and Drama, Acting Specialist with a certificate in Integrated Liberal Studies.

Madison credits include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Bat Boy, [title of show], You Can’t Take It With You, and Elephant’s Graveyard. Stuart’s motion capture work appears in Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Jake Penner (Outlaw) is a senior majoring in English Literature. Most recently he appeared in Children’s Theatre of

Patrick Reed (Launce) is excited to be portraying Launce in his third production with UT. In the past year, you may have seen Patrick in The Rocky Horror Show, Ti-Jean and Brothers, or Twelve Angry Men. While an avid thespian, Patrick spent his undergrad years at UW-Madison pursuing a degree in History and International Studies, a degree that he completed this last December.

While not looking to a career in theatre, he means to continue his hobby wherever his career may take him. Patrick sincerely hopes that he has woken up in time for tonight’s show. Enjoy!

Alanna Reeves (Speed) is a graduating senior majoring in Theatre and Gender & Women’s Studies, Alanna is excited to be appearing in her first Shakespeare play and is grateful for such an open and encouraging rehearsal process.

Other UT credits include You Can’t Take It With You, The Grapes of Wrath, and Lady From the Sea. Prior to arriving in Madison, she appeared in several shows at St. Croix off Broadway Dinner Theatre in Hudson, WI as well as several tours with Missoula Children’s Theatre.

Alanna currently teaches after-school theatre classes at Waunakee Parks and Recreation, and writes educator resource guides for the K-12 performance series at the Overture Center for the Arts. She thanks her friends and family for always encouraging her to boldly pursue her dreams wherever they may take her and sends a special thanks to Joe for tolerating the craziness of these last three years in school.

Santiago Sosa (Proteus) is a third year University of Wisconsin MFA acting candidate from Guayaquil, Ecuador.

In 2002, Santiago earned both a BFA in directing and acting from Texas State University. Regionally, Santiago has worked as an actor for companies like Illinois Shakespeare Festival, American Players Theatre, Muse of Fire Shakespeare Festival, Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, Magic City Actors Theatre, The Bolding Studio, Shadow Stage Players, Harrison Shakespeare Theatre, Theatre Downtown, All Things to All People, as well as co-founding both the At Random Theatre and the From the Branch Theatre Companies.

Production Kenneth Albers (Director, AEA/SSDC) A native of Eureka, Illinois, Ken received his B.F.A. degree in Theater from Illinois Wesleyan University and his M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota. For nearly five decades his work as an actor and director, in more than 300 productions, has been seen throughout the country in theaters such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Cleveland Play House, Great Lakes Theater Festival, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Portland Center Stage, American Players Theater, Actor’s Theater of Louisville, Missouri Repertory Theater, Indiana Repertory Theater, Syracuse Stage, Yale Repertory Theater, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Two River Theater Company, and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. In 1987, Ken staged the world premiere of Donald Freed’s The Last Hero for the Abbey Theater in Dublin, Ireland. This marks Ken’s third production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona. He has previously staged the play for Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas and for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon. Ken resides in Ashland with his wife, actress Catherine Lynn Davis. He has two children, Dr. Elizabeth Albers of Sacramento and attorney Matthew Albers, Esq. of Cleveland. He is also the proud grandfather of six thriving grandchildren, Cora, Leah, Sara, Owen, Emma, and Jack.

Katy Lai (Scenic Designer) is finishing her third year MFA in scenic design. She designed Eurydice, Valparaiso and The Lady from the Sea for UT last two years.

She also did her first costume design last semester for Ti Jean and His Brothers.

Before moving to Madison, she was the Production Director for ABA Productions Ltd in Hong Kong and also Set Designer for Around the World in 80 Days and the Peter Pan Asia Tour 2007-2008. She has also worked in stage management, production management and in all other aspects of technical theater in Vancouver, Canada and Hong Kong.

Sarah Woodworth (Costume Designer) is an MFA graduate student in Costume Design at University of WisconsinMadison and received her Bachelors of Science in Theatre Design and Technology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Some of her past costume design credits include Bat Boy, You Can’t Take it With You, Twelfth Night, Assassins, Intimate Apparel, Ruthless!, The Secretaries, God’s Ear, Mary’s Wedding, Road to Mecca, Fugitive Songs, Point of Revue, Polaroid Stories, and Katatonika (world premiere, 2009 Prague International Fringe Festival). She would like to thank her future husband for all of his support and love.

Jono de Leon (Lighting Designer) is a third year lighting design graduate student at the University of Wisconsin Madison and this is his final design with the UW Madison MFA Program. Jono has had an amazing time working on this show and collaborating with his fellow grad students in order to create this production and would like to thank the design and production teams for their efforts. She is ecstatic to be closing her time here at University Theatre with Two Gents and would like to thank Ken, the wonderful cast, crew, and her fantastic ASM team for making it one of the most rewarding productions she has Stage Managed.

Allyn Weber (Technical Director) This is Allyn’s third time serving as Technical Director for a University Theatre production. His recent work includes Ti Jean and His Brothers and Eurydice for University Theatre and Grease and The Music Man for The Heartland Festival at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.

Allyn would like to thank his loving wife Anne Marie, daughter Katelyn, and his family for their support. He would also like to thank Fred Foster of ETC for his invaluable help in creating the handrail assembly that can be seen up stage on this set. Thank you Fred!

Charles J. Trieloff II (Prop Master) Charles received his M.F.A. in Set Design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Design Credits: For University Theatre: Antigone, The Passion of Dracula, A Little Night Music, Man of La Mancha, The Water Station, Smash, Steel Magnolias, True West and Stop Kiss. For CTM: Little Women, Narnia, Goodnight Moon, A Wonderful Life, Bunnicula, and A Christmas Carol. For Madison Opera: Opera in the Park. For Forward Theater: Going to St Ives, The Farnsworth Invention.

Charles has also been a visiting artist at UW-Whitewater, where he designed A Lie Of The Mind, Hay Fever, Guys and Dolls, and Antigone. In Madison he was the prop master at Madison Repertory Theatre for nine years, and currently is the prop master at American Players Theatre. He has also designed props for Forward Theater, CTM, Madison Ballet, Madison Opera. Outside of the theater world Charles has designed the themed reception areas for Children’s Dental Health’s Old Sauk Road location.

Niccole Carner (Dramaturg) is a second-year PhD student in Theatre and Drama with a primary interest in modern Scottish nationalist theatre, specifically new works within Scottish theatre. She is also interested in how Irish drama has influenced and shaped Scottish theatre. She received her MA in Literary and Cultural Studies from Carnegie Mellon University, with a certificate in Renaissance Studies from the University of Strathclyde, Scotland.

Catherine Lynn Davis (Assistant Director) a native of Escanaba, Michigan, a graduate of Case Western Reserve University, and a professional actress since 1983, Catherine’s work has been seen at many of the country’s leading regional theaters including the Kansas City Repertory Theater the Repertory Theater of St. Louis, as well as the Madison, Indiana, and Yale repertory Theaters. She has also “trod the boards” of the Geva Theater Center Syracuse Stage, Milwaukee Chamber Theater, New American Theater, Portland Center Stage, The Cleveland Play House and The Gentlemen of Verona 11

Renaissance Theaterworks. In addition Catherine was a resident company member with the Milwaukee Repertory Theater for more than a decade, a resident actor with the acclaimed Oregon Shakespeare Festival for ten years, and a company member with American Players Theater in Spring Green, Wisconsin. “Cate” has played some of Shakespeare’s greatest leading ladies including Juliet, Viola, Olivia, Cordelia and the Fool in Lear, Desdemona, Miranda, Regan, Mistress Ford, Titania,

Hermione, Paulina, and Isabella. Her extensive resume includes Cleopatra in Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra, Raina in Arms and the Man, and Julia Craven from his Philanderer. She has assayed both Irina and Natasha in Chekhov’s Three Sisters, played the title roles in Educating Rita, Antigone, and The Diary of Anne Frank. In addition to her classical work she has created roles in World Premieres for playwrights Marie Irene Fornes, David Edgar, Romulus Linney and Marie Kohler.

F R I E N D S O F U N I V E R S I T Y T H E AT R E The FRIENDS of UT is a group of individuals that serves as a support organization for UW Madison’s University Theatre, providing members with opportunities to connect with and offer support for student actors, dramaturgs, directors, and designers involved in University Theatre productions. FRIENDS of UT plan and host receptions prior to productions, enjoy exceptional performances together, and work to encourage broader awareness and appreciation of the UW Department of Theatre and Drama throughout the community.

Funds raised by FRIENDS of UT will provide much needed production support, including technical enhancements such as state-of-the-art equipment upgrades, as well as special guest artist residencies that will support the training of our students.

In the past, Friends of UT have enjoyed invitations to a special post-performance reception with Olympia Dukakis as well as a pre-performance discussion with show directors. They sponsored a visit with Anthony Rapp (from the original Broadway cast of RENT). Funds raised were used to support a Suzuki acting workshop with Brandeis Professor Eric Hill and several guest sound designers.

The group sponsored a day trip for FUT members and UT students to Ten Chimneys in Genesee Depot, WI. Recently, the group attended a performance of the play Ten Chimneys being produced by the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.

Restrooms: Restrooms and drinking fountains for patron use are located in the lower level of the theatre lobby. Wheelchair accessible facilities are available on the lobby level. Please use lower level facilities unless special needs dictate otherwise.

Emergency Calls: Doctors and parents are asked to leave the campus security phone number, 264-2677, with their service or sitter. Please inform the house manager of your seat location if the possibility of a call exists.

In order not to disturb other patrons, please turn off all paging devices, electonic devices, cell phones and watch alarms.

Latecomers: Performances begin promptly. Latecomers will be seated only at a suitable break, which in some cases may not be until intermission.

Exchanges and Refunds: No refunds are given, but exchanges may be made up to 24 hours prior to the ticketed performance date when tickets are available.

Patrons who cannot use their tickets are asked to contact the Vilas Hall Box Office 24 hours in advance of the performance. Postdated tickets have no value and cannot be exchanged. Unused tickets can be donated to the theatre for resale, the proceeds of which will go to improvements of the theatre.

Ticketing: Any person entering the theatre must have a ticket. Babes in arms can not be admitted. UT discourages bringing small children to the theatre except when the production is specifically for young audiences.

Accessibility: University Theatre can accommodate your special needs. Call 265-2787 for information regarding wheelchair accessibility and hearingassist systems.

Parking: Parking passes are available for purchase by arts patrons in UW owned parking lots close to venues. Call Campus Arts Ticketing at 265-2787 for more information.
