Joseph Caruana is a co-founder of Elements Contemporary Ballet. He received his training from the Pacific Northwest Ballet School, The Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, and through workshops with the Boston Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet, and the Lou Conte Dance Center. Prior to joining Elements, he was a member of River North Chicago Dance Company for three years. He has performed with Spectrum Dance Theatre, SD Prism Dance Theatre, Civic Ballet of Chicago, and Evanston Dance Ensemble. As a choreographer, he has been accepted as a finalist into the McCallum Theatre’s Dance under the Stars Choreography Festival, and recently presented work as part of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events DanceBridge program. He would like to thank Mike and his family for supporting him in everything he’s done.

Angel was recently selected as a finalist in Palm Desert’s McCallum Theatre Dance Under the Stars Choreography Festival 2011. Special thanks to all of the individual donors who made our participation in this festival possible!

T H E C O M PA N Y Callie Croom (apprentice) began her training under Barbara Pontecorvo in Dayton, Ohio. In 2001, she joined the pre-professional company, Gem City Ballet, performing noted ballets such as George Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco, Who Cares?, and Serenade. Upon graduating from high school, she was accepted to Butler University on an academic scholarship. After receiving her BFA from Butler University, Callie relocated to Chicago to begin a professional dance career. She was admitted to the Visceral Dance Center Scholarship Program in June 2011, and is now thrilled to be working with Elements Contemporary Ballet.

Gabrielle Del Re had the privilege to study ballet with world renowned teachers such as Gelsey Kirkland and David Howard. She trained at the prestigious Faubourg Academy of Ballet under the direction of Watmora Casey and Avnun Yakubov, and because of her artistic versatility as a dancer she has been invited to train Spring Engagement 3

T H E C O M PA N Y ( c o n t .) under multiple companies such as Houston Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Boston Ballet and The Joffrey Ballet. Gabrielle is also a Radio City Rockette and has performed in the documentary movie titled, A Diamond In The Rock: 75 years at Radio City Music Hall and featured in the book, Radio City Spectacular, A Photographic History of the Rockettes and Christmas Spectacular. Some of her national appearances include The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen De Generes Show, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and she has been a guest artist on the hit television show Dancing With The Stars. Gabrielle would like to thank her sister and parents for their continued love and support and is grateful to Mr. Gosney for his allowance of artistic freedom.

Nicole Erickson is a mountain girl from Colorado. She joined the Colorado Jazz Dance Company at age twelve and moved to Chicago six years later to share two seasons with River North Dance Company before becoming a founding member of Elements Contemporary Ballet. Following a five-year tenure with Elements, Nicole began dancing with Tania Perez-Salas Compania De Danza (TPS) in Mexico City; after premieres in Mexico City, the company completed a US tour including The Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Most recently, she

Over the years, she has received awards and scholarships from Jazz Dance World Congress, Joffrey Dance Competitions, and The University of Arizona. Nicole is is excited to be dancing with Elements Contemporary Ballet once again and awaits her return to TPS in Mexico City at the end of May. Anthony J. Foster is a true product of Chicago land’s finest educators, choreographers and theaters. His all-encompassing and diverse training background includes authentic tutelage in the forms of classical ballet and pioneered jazz technique from direct descendants of the late George Balanchine and Gus Giordano. His training background includes The School of Ballet Chicago, Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago & Barat College Conservatory of Dance and his dance collective is a culmination of styles, methods and disciplines including contemporary, abstract and classical ballet, funk, hip hop, house and jazz brought on by early-aged exposure to street-style, breakdance and gymnastic training, (1996 IHSA State Gymnastic Team member). He has graced the stage leading such ballets as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Les Patineurs & The Last Waltz and has

been featured in music videos for artists Echo and Groove Jam. His television credits include season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance. Anthony has begun his 8th season working with the dancers of Soleunique Dance Co., of which he is artistic director, choreographer and owner. When away from the home-studio, Anthony travels the U.S. teaching guest classes, conventions and setting choreography.

He has had the honor of teaching on faculty for Columbia College Chicago, The College of DuPage, Embracing The Dream Dance Conference and Dance Masters of Wisconsin.

Luke Joiner previously danced with Alabama Ballet for six seasons. With the Alabama Ballet, Luke has been seen in An American in Paris as Jerry along with other featured roles in The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Don Quixote, George Balanchine’s Donizetti Variations, Serenade, and The Nutcracker, Teri Weksler’s Quixotic, Leslie Browne’s Brahm’s Trio, Marius Petipa’s Carnival In Venice, and Concert Fantasy, unRAVELed, Shostakovich Opus 102, Swan Lake, Flames of Paris pas de deux, Le Corsaire pas de deux, Romeo & Juliet, Giselle, Firebird, Dracula, Graduation Ball, Septime Webre’s Where the Wild Things Are, Coppelia, Le Corsaire as Conrad, George Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes, and Jordan Morris’ Verdi.

Angeles Ballet, and The San Francisco Ballet School where she also attended a full year. Lyz has performed with The Joffrey Ballet as part of their children’s cast of The Nutcracker and in Taming of the Shrew, and has danced in American Ballet Theater’s Le Corsaire. Lyz is currently a psychology major with a dance minor at Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU). With NEIU she has performed in the American College Dance Festival and the opera The Secret Garden. She has danced with Concert Dance Inc., and is currently also a member of Reveries in Motion, a dance company that donates proceeds of their performances to various charities.

Lyz’s favorite type of dance is contemporary movement en pointe, and she hopes to choreograph more pieces that incorporate this style.

Michelle McCrea (apprentice) is excited to be joining Elements Contemporary Ballet as an apprentice her first season. Originally from Mokena, IL, Michelle’s early training began in Orland Park at the American Dance Center with Jack and Kathleen Villari.

With ADC Michelle has had the amazing opportunity of competing at the International Dance Festival in California. Michelle completed her degree from Northern Illinois University Lyz Krieger began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre her training in the Studies with an emphasis in dance Chicago Ballet Arts school and the Ruth performance. Michelle’s favorite roles include as a soloist in Carmina Burana.

Noelle Paige is a native of Pensacola, FL and danced with Ballet Pensacola for 10 years. She has also studied at multiple programs across the nation, including the Rock School in Pennsylvania, Princeton’s American Repertory Ballet in New Jersey, and LINES Ballet’s Student and Professional Intensives in San Francisco, on scholarships. Noelle has also studied with Mobile Ballet, Montgomery Ballet and the Northwest Florida Ballet through the course of her training. Paige has performed in Christine Duhon’s Upwardly Mobile and In The Upper Room as well as Richard Steinert’s Thunderstruck and The Nutcracker. Noelle is also the winner of the 2006 “Women in The Arts” award and “Pensacola’s Rising Star” award for 2010.

Ricky Ruiz received his initial dance training in his hometown of Miami, FL and was a graduate of Coral Reef Senior High Magnet Dance. He attended the University of South Florida on academic and talent scholarships and graduated Cum Laude with a BFA in Dance Performance in the Spring of 2007. While in college, he was an apprentice at Ann Reinking’s Broadway Theatre Project for two consecutive summers. Ricky has worked with such choreographers as Dan Karaty, Laurie Stallings, Kiki Lucas and Melissa Thodos among others. He has performed a wide variety of repertory ranging from works by Jose Limon to Bob Fosse. He’s had the opportunity to perform and showcase his choreography in numerous regional festivals. As part of a weeklong residency in 2006, he presented work in Castano Primo, Italy. Ricky is an enthusiastic and eager instructor and travels the country teaching and setting choreography. Among the many teams and schools he choreographs for are FSU, GSU and OU. He is a guest teacher throughout Florida, and works permanently at Focal Point Dance Studios in Miami.

Prior to working with Elements, Ricky was a member of River North Chicago Dance Company.

Katie Steffenhagen began her dance training with Jean Wolfmeyer School of Dance at the age of 5. In 2003 she graduated from Virginia School of the Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia under the direction of Petrus Bosman. She then when on to dance with Ballet West in Salt Lake City, Utah and attended the Joffrey Ballet School in New York City, New York. In 2007-2009

she danced for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines performing choreography of Sherry Zunker, Jeremy Plummer, Frank Chaves, Laura Dunlop, and Harrison McEldowney. In 2009 she began working with C5 under the direction of Jeremy Plummer. Katie also had the privilege of dancing for Harrison McEldowney’s finale at Dance for Life 2010, and is now excited to be in her second season with Elements Contemporary Ballet. Katie would like to thank her family for all of their continued love and support.

Yu Suzuki, a native of Japan, received her B.F.A. in theatre arts with an emphasis in dance performance from Northern Illinois University under Randy Newsom. Her early training began at Faubourg School of Ballet under Watmora Casey

and Avnun Yakubov, and continued at several studios in Japan. She has been a dancer for Radio City Rockettes for two seasons, as an original cast of first national arena tour, and also has danced with Madison Ballet in their production of Cinderella. Her performances include a soloist role in Epilogue by Paul Christiano, With Blinders On by Karen Reedy, Tiempos Goyescos by Luis Montero, and title roles in Paquita, Giselle, La Corsaire, and Raymonda.

Megan Walsh is in her third season with Elements as a full company member. Prior to joining Elements, she had been an apprentice with the company for two years. Megan began training under the guidance of artistic director Mike Gosney when she was 14

Megan performed Joseph Caruana’s Angel, one of twelve finalists selected to dance at the McCallum Theater’s Dance Under the Stars Festival in November 2011. She has also been a guest artist with Ballet Legere’s production of the Nutcracker. Megan began her dance training at Dance Center Evanston, with director Bea Rashid. As a teenager she was a member of its youth company, the Evanston Dance Ensemble, and performed with them for six seasons in such productions as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe; FAB!; and Alice in Wonderland. Also during her high school years she was a member of Loyola Acadamy Dance Company and performed with them for four seasons.

Megan has received scholarships to attend the Cecchetti summer programs at Hope College and has been accepted into the Joffrey Ballet summer programs. Megan has trained in the Cecchetti Method through Grade VII.

Elements Contemporary Ballet combines the beauty of classical technique with the intensity of innovative contemporary dance. Artistic Director Mike Gosney co-founded Elements with dancer and Managing Director Joseph Caruana in 2005, presenting the company’s first full length concert on one year later on September 19, 2006 at the Harold Washington Library in downtown Chicago. Using the four elements of nature; fire, earth, air, and water; as a basis to each represent a major facet of dance for study and movement creation (expression, physicality, focus, and freedom; respectively), Gosney has since built a uniquely stylized repertory that the company now performs in annual concerts along with original work by guest choreographers such as James Gregg (BJM Danse), Sean Hilton (Armitage Gone! Dance), Brian

As a choreographer, Mr. Gosney’s work has appeared in The A.W.A.R.D. Show! 2010, The Best of Dance Chicago, Looptopia, Around the Coyote Arts Festival, The Atlas Agenda, Joel Hall’s Dances from the Halls, Evanston Arts Week, productions with the Evanston Dance Ensemble and Evanston Symphony, and in many other Chicago area festivals and dance performances. In addition to his work with Elements, Mike is on faculty at Dance Center Evanston and Visceral Dance Center, and has previously taught at Joel Hall Dance Center, Lou Conte Dance Center, Gus Giordano Dance Center, DancenterNorth, Eastern Illinois University, and College of Lake County. Mr. Gosney has orchestrated events for Evanston Arts Week and DanceArt Outreach Program, and formerly served as Artistic Director of Koslynn Dance Academy and SASS Productions.

Artistic Director Mike Gosney, co-founder of Elements Contemporary Ballet, has been teaching and privately coaching ballet for 20 years. His students have been accepted into prestigious companies, programs, and schools such as the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Houston Ballet, Boston Ballet, Milwaukee Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, LINES Ballet, Tisch School of the Arts, The Juilliard School, Point Park University, American Ballet Theatre, and many others.

Artistic Associate Victoria Vargas was born in the city of Maracaibo, Venezuela and has over 20 years of experience as a professional dancer. She studied Ballet at the School of Fine Arts and danced with El Ballet Nacional de Venezuela and El Ballet Contemporaneo de Caracas. She has performed at some of Venezuela’s biggest stages in productions such as the Miss Venezuela beauty pageant, as well as on multiple TV ad commercials. In the USA, she has performed with The San Francisco Opera House, Dallas Opera House, and The Lyric Opera of Chicago. She was a founding member of Luna Negra Dance Theater, where her role as Frida was hailed by the press as a “lush and emotional interpretation [of the artist]”.

For the last 12 years Chicago has been Victoria’s home town, where her work as a teacher involved the development of the community outreach program for Luna Negra Dance Theater as well as an original outreach program titled UNO. This earned her a nomination by the City of Chicago as one of the most prominent Latinos in the expansion of the educational programs for minority communities. For her work as a chorographer she has been invited by the National Ballet of Panama to stage her popular ballet, The Dreams of Reason, an exciting and theatrical piece that explores the darker ideas of Spanish painter Francisco de Goya.

Bread & Roses Productions was started in 2010 by Josh Weckesser and Lauren Girard to provide the theatre and dance community of Chicago a one-stop shop for all their technical and design needs. Knowing that finding reliable and professional freelancers for the off-loop community can be difficult Josh and Lauren, through their contacts in the community, have the ability to locate and contract stage 10 Elements Contemporary Ballet

T H E C O M PA N Y ( c o n t .) managers, lighting, set, costume and sound designers, any crew that may be needed for the show and even photographers and videographers.

The name, Bread & Roses is inspired by James Oppenheim’s poem “Bread and Roses,” which makes strong statements about the needs of a person not just for their daily bread (substance), but for roses (beauty) also. It is the business (bread) of art (roses) that the company concerns itself with. In a perfect state of nature, the professional life of the free-lance technician working in the off-loop community tends to be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short (with apologies to Hobbes). By building strong and long-lasting bonds Bread & Roses hopes to fight that trend.

Working primarily in circles of dance Josh’s designs have been seen across Chicago, the US and international borders. Josh is excited to continue his work with Elements. Josh has also been working closely with Molly Shanahan / Mad Shak Dance Company as a lighting designer and core collaborator since 2003 on such project as Eye Cycle, as well as My Name is a Blackbird and critically acclaimed Sharks Before Drowning.

He lit Sidra Bell’s “Risoluta” as well as Frank Chaves’ “Simply Miles, Simply Us” for River North Dance Chicago, for whom he also serves as lighting director. As well as lighting “Why Gershwin?” for Billy Siegenfeld at Jump Rhythm Jazz Project. Josh is also Production Manager for the annual Dance Chicago Festival, Production Manager / Lighting Designer for the Chicago Human Rhythm Project and Lighting

Designer for Be the Groove and the Leopold Group. Josh has also worked closely with other Chicago based companies such as DanszLoop Chicago, Chicago Dance Crash and Inaside Dance Chicago among others. Recently Josh founded Bread & Roses Productions (www. breadandroseschicago.com) with Lauren Girard, a company dedicated to providing production support to stages filled with dancing everywhere.
