6. Growth, Supervision and Evaluation

As per Alberta Education’s Teacher Growth, Supervision and Evaluation Policy, the Principal and/or Executive Director(s) must provide ongoing supervision of teachers, as outlined in Appendix V. This may include:

 Providing support and guidance to teachers.

 Observing and receiving information from any source about the quality of teaching a teacher provides to students.

 Identifying the behaviours or practices of a teacher that for any reason may require an evaluation.

 All teachers will receive supervision support and feedback throughout the course of the year.

6a. Teachers

Teacher evaluations will be conducted by the Principal or Executive Director(s), in accordance with the Evaluation Philosophy and Guidelines (Appendix V).

This may include when:

 A teacher is in their first year of teaching at Foothills Academy.

 A teacher is operating on an Interim Certificate, Letter of Authority or Temporary Letter of Authority.

 The teacher has requested an evaluation in writing.

 There are purposes of gathering information related to a specific employment decision.

 On the basis of information received through supervision, the Program Co-Ordinator or Executive Director(s) has reason to believe that the teaching of the teacher may not meet the teaching quality standard (TQS).

 Administration conduct drop in observations, or walk-throughs, sometime accompanied by other staff.

The write up of evaluations is outlined in the Evaluation Philosophy and Guidelines (Appendix V), and may consist of:

 Evaluations may consist of three separate observations. Each observation will comprise of a pre-observation meeting, to ascertain the specifics goals and planning of the lesson; the observation itself; and a post-observation meeting/reflection, to discuss the lesson, provide feedback, note areas of strength and areas for growth. The evaluation will be written formatively from the three observations.

 The teachers will be provided with the rubric/measures for the observations, linked to the Teaching Quality Standards (Appendix V).

 Evaluations may consist of a week-long observation, where administration observe one lesson per day, providing feedback mid-

week, and observing the applications from the feedback through the end of the week.

 Drop-in observations will occur throughout the year, as well as brief, ten minute walk around observations (sometimes with other staff), the rubric for which is in Appendix V.

This policy does not restrict the Principal or Executive Director(s) from taking disciplinary or other action, as appropriate, where the Principal or Executive Director has reasonable grounds for believing that the actions or practices of a teacher endangers the safety of students, constitutes a neglect of duty, a breach of trust or a refusal to obey a lawful order of Foothills Academy Society.

This policy does not restrict the Executive Director(s) from taking any action or exercising any right or power under the School Act.

This policy does not restrict Alberta Education from not inquiring or reporting upon any disputes arising from the dissatisfaction of an individual teacher with the evaluation report of Foothills Academy.

6b. Administration Evaluation

The Executive Directors will formally evaluate school administration annually. The evaluation will be conducted based upon Alberta Education’s Leadership Quality Standards and Foothills Academy’s Administration evaluation measures.

6c. Educational Assistants

Educational Assistants will be provided with a one-page supervision summary sheet by their immediate teacher during the course of the year. Educational Assistants are supervised and evaluated by their immediate teachers.

Educational Assistants can request in writing for an evaluation from school administration.

6d. Auxiliary Staff Evaluation

All auxiliary staff will be provided with supervision evaluations by their immediate supervisors over the course of the year. The staff will be made aware of the criteria for the measuring of their supervision.
