STAN’S DONUTS OPENS 13TH LOCATION

Photos courtesy of Stan’s Donuts

As of December, Orland Park is the site of the newest outpost of Stan’s Donuts, Chicagoland’s beloved coffee and pastry shop led by founder and master baker Rich Labriola. The Orland Park location is home to Stan’s second drive-thru window and features an outdoor patio. The Stan’s team kicked off the opening celebration in Orland Park on Dec. 5 with a few sweet incentives: The first 100 guests received a free boxed doughnut and a limited-edition Stan’s T-shirt. Some lucky guests whose birthday coincided with the opening received the new Stan’s Celebration Cake doughnut. It’s made from two classic yeast doughnuts, which are stacked and covered in vanilla French butter cream frosting, coated with sprinkles, and topped with a mini doughnut. Rich Labriola, of Labriola Baking Company, opened the first Stan’s Donuts & Coffee in Chicago in 2014, after partnering with Stan Berman, founder of the iconic Los Angeles shop that bears his name. Stan’s serves a vast array of award-winning doughnuts, coffee, breakfast sandwiches, dunkable cookies and specialty drinks. At Stan’s and at Labriola’s other Doughboy Restaurant Group restaurants, he uses fresh butter, eggs and vanilla and other quality ingredients to ensure the tastiest experience possible. a AROUND CHICAGO............24 CHEF PROFILES...............10 CHICAGOLAND NEWS..........8 CLASSIFIEDS..............37-38 DINING WITH MS. DINING WITH

MS. X JANUARY 2021

ALOHA POKE CO., 630 Davis St. EVANSTON, Ill.; 224-9997298. This is how it works: Pick your bowl size, base type, type of poke and type of protein. I ordered the Aloha Bowl with brown rice for my base and marinated chicken. You can get the chicken naked too. I loved the sweet taste of the pineapple with the heat of the jalapeños. The bowl also had scallions, onion and cucumbers with a sesame vinaigrette dressing. It was fresh, healthy and delicious. In the bag there was a fork, chopsticks and soy sauce. EINSTEIN BROS BAGELS, 1745 Shermer Ave. EVANSTON, Ill.; 847328-9888. There’s a huge sign on the window saying they’re open. They have bagels, breakfast sandwiches, cookies, coffee, soft drinks and more. I picked up some bagels, which included Asiago; everything; and cranberry bagels. I picked up a tub of their onion and chive cream cheese too. The bagels are fresh baked, soft, tasty and the cream cheese is very flavorful. FULL MOON RESTAURANT, 1300 Skokie Hwy. LAKE BLUFF, Ill.; 847689-0733. This is a large, old school diner offering a huge menu. It’s good place for breakfast, too. I ordered the club sandwich with fries and it came with soup. The portions are very generous. What makes this place stand out is not only the food, but the friendly staff. The owner is charming: He knows his customers and he makes you feel welcome. They do a nice job! GOLDY’S GRILL, 1023 N. Northwest Hwy. PARK RIDGE, Ill.; 847-8259725. This is a small place in a strip mall serving breakfast and lunch only. I tried one of their deli sandwiches: turkey, American cheese on wheat bread, lettuce, tomato and it came with a pickle. Since I ordered it deluxe, it came with soup and choice of side. I chose the chicken soup and the potato salad. Great value and everything was really good. FYI: it’s cash only! NORTH SHORE KOSHER BAKERY, 2919 W. Touhy Ave. CHICAGO, Ill.; 773-262-0600. One of my favorite things is coffee cake. You will find an assortment of coffee cakes here; my preferred choice is cherry. Last time I stopped in, not only did I pick up a coffee cake but I also had to get a few Danishes too. Their raspberry and apricot Danish made with cinnamon roll dough is out of this world. Some of their other specialties include challah bread, decorated cakes, mandel bread, rugallah, cookies, pastries, cupcakes and so much more. PARIS BAGUETTE BOULANGERIE, 600 Milwaukee Ave. GLENVIEW, Ill.; 224-443-4852. This location was recently opened. The place is bright and very spacious. Grab a tray and load up on pastries, donuts, croissants and a variety of breads. The pastries and breads are individually wrapped, which is ideal. I tried the sweet potato bread and one of their fruit bites with raspberry. Both were delicious. There is also a display of cakes to check out and individual refrigerated treats along with coffee and drinks as well. TEXAS ROADHOUSE, 118471 71st St. KENOSHA, Wis.; 262-857-7700. This is a casual dining restaurant chain offering burgers, wings, ribs, chicken, seafood. They are known for their steaks. They started us off with some warm rolls with cinnamon butter, which was amazing! At first I was going to get a steak but I decided on the prime rib instead. It was cooked perfectly. It was tender and flavorful and came with a choice of two sides. I ordered the house salad and the baked potato. This place has great food and atmosphere.

Enrollment in Online Barbecue Classes Surge in Quarantine The online barbecue classes industry saw a surprising surge in popularity this year during COVID-19 quarantines. As the nation shifted toward working from home, this opened up more time during the day for people to take quick breaks to tend to their smoker. According to Google trends, searches for “how Rick Browne is the former host of TV’s “Barbecue America” and a pitmaster who teaches online at Grill Master University. to smoke meat” skyrocketed to a peak popularity rating of 100, which correlates strongly with people having more free time while working from home. Online barbecue classes such as Grill Master University saw an over 50% year-over-year surge in enrollments. Executive producer Michael O’Donnell said, “Meat smoking is a long process which typically takes up to 8 hours or more to do properly. ... Social distancing guidelines forced local barbecue classes to shut down, so this resulted in much higher enrollments in online cooking classes.” Barbecue tools and accessories brands such as Cave Tools have also capitalized on this growing trend. -PR Newswire

Australian whiskey has become increasingly sophisticated over the last two decades, with distillers there capitalizing on peat bogs, local hops and the country’s diverse climates to produce a distinctive Australian interpretation of the tipple, writes Brian Freedman. McCloud Services Identifies Top 10 Pest Vulnerable Zones

All pests will have certain environmental preferences and survival needs. When the right conditions are met, pests thrive. McCloud Services, a leader in pest management, is here to expose the most vulnerable zones in your facility where pests are mostly likely to survive and thrive. Sanitation, employee practices, facility processes and structural and equipment design can either hinder or help pest’s survival. Not all areas within a facility will meet the needs of the pest equally and certain areas will have a higher risk for pest development than others. Utilize this list in prioritizing areas for regular inspection as part of a pest prevention program. 1. Rack legs 2. Horizontal rack supports 3. Dumpster/compactor areas 4. Trailers for repurposing food and other wastes 5. Balers 6. Damaged goods 7. Product type, such as bagged packaging and expired inventory 8. Corrugated wall construction 9. Break rooms and locker rooms 10. Wash bays and drains for floor scrubbers With winter rapidly approaching, pests will be on the hunt for warm areas to reside, potentially leaving your facility vulnerable. Understanding the zones that are most common for pest activity will be crucial in preventing infestation and keeping your facility pest-free. -Patricia Hottel, BCE

BOOKSHELF

‘Frank Cullotta’s Greatest (Kitchen) Hits’ By Frank Cullotta and Dennis N. Griffin Publisher: WildBlue Press Paperback, $22.95

Trade Paperback ISBN: 978-1-952225-40-6

Former Chicago Outfit member turned federal witness Frank Cullotta shares some of his favorite Italian recipes—including a few from his beloved mother, Josephine (aka Mama Josie)—such as cavatelli, pizza dough and braciole. In addition, there are instructions for various soups, desserts and one chapter titled “Other Killer Recipes.” Though Cullotta and his co-author, Dennis N. Griffin, may be better known for their previous collaborations such as “Cullotta: The Life of a Chicago Criminal, Las Vegas Mobster, and Government Witness,” the writers comfortably demonstrate a love for cooking and eating. Cullotta once owned a pizza joint in Las Vegas called the Upper Crust. The former Hole in the Wall gangster died in August, leaving Griffin to complete the cookbook. Cullotta helpfully points out that some of his recipes are rather indulgent: “If you happen to put on a pound or two in the process, forget about it!” -C.C.

Lettuce Entertain You Lays off 1,000

Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises planned to permanently lay off more than 1,000 employees, according to a recent filing with Illinois labor authorities. The planned layoffs of 1,045 workers hit more than 40 LEYE restaurant locations in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, according to the latest Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification report. LEYE operates more than 120 restaurants in nine states. COVID-19 was listed as the reason for all of the planned layoffs. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker banned indoor dining in Chicago. -Source: Restaurant Business

‘Thank you’ from boss can boost employee satisfaction Showing appreciation for employees should be combined with building employee engagement, according to experts. Fostering engagement in the workplace is more tangible than creating an employees’ happiness, said Vivian Woo, senior people science analyst at Culture Amp. “A happy employee might not necessarily be a productive employee, but engaged employees tend to perform better than their unenImage by SK from Pixabay gaged counterparts.” Managers who understand the best ways to make their team members feel appreciated can help increase engagement, which is shown to be linked to many organizational outcomes, like turnover and performance. More than half (60%) of employees surveyed by Limeade Institute who felt “cared for” said they plan to remain three or more years with their companies, compared to 7% of those who said they didn’t feel cared for, according to a white paper published in October. The overwhelming majority of respondents (90%) who felt cared for said they were likely to suggest their company as an exceptional place to work, compared to 9% who said they didn’t feel cared about. -HR Dive

FoodChain ID Offers Vegetarian, Plant-Based and Vegan Certification FoodChain ID, one of the world’s leading food safety, testing and sustainability organizations, has created a vegetarian, plant-based and vegan (VEG) certification program. “Consumers are increasingly turning to a full range of plant-based and meatless products, especially as alternative protein sources,” said Mark Dabroski, FoodChain’s senior vice president, commerical services. “This newly established certification is in response to customer demand for a labeling solution that provides greater product transparency.” The global vegan food market value is estimated to reach around USD 24.3 billion by 2026. Market demand is further supported by fast food restaurants in the U.S. serving “meatless” burgers and retailers featuring those and similar products in ads. The FoodChain ID VEG Program enables food manufacturers to: n Increase transparency n Add value to their brands n Meet consumer and retailer demand Dabroski notes that “Our VEG certification can be bundled with existing non-GMO project verification and/or USDA organic certification for greater efficiency and cost savings for client’s using multiple certifications.” For more about the certification, visit www. foodchainid.com/certification/vegetarian-andplant-based-certification.

Breadless sandwich restaurant concept coming to Detroit A new restaurant that features sandwiches without the bread is planned to come to Detroit in the spring. Founded by Marc Howland, Ryan Eli Salter, and LaTresha Staten, the restaurant raised $1.1 million in capital and has chosen its first physical location on the new Joseph Campau Greenway Connector, which is near the riverfront. The location is being designed with COVID-19 safety in mind, even though the opening could come months after the rollout of a vaccine against the virus. According to DBusiness, the restaurant “will feature online order and pickup, grab and go, a walk and bike up window, delivery, catering and a stationary drivethru where customers can order in a designated parking spot and have their food delivered to their vehicle.” The concept was founded as a healthy Food Network photo sandwich option and features classic sandwich options wrapped in leafy greens instead of bread, including Swiss chard, turnip greens and collard greens. Howland, co-founder and CEO of Breadless, told the magazine, “I started Breadless because I struggled for 10 years to find healthy, on-the-go food options that fit into my clean eating regimen.” The restaurant touts itself as being gluten free, low carb, and on-the-go friendly. Breadless hopes that it can show Detroiters healthy food can be filling and fresh. “Our purpose is to help millions of people to live healthier and happier lives, and thus feel more fulfilled by feeling good about themselves and what they are eating,” their website reads. -Detroit Metro Times

Triscuit Launches Project to Help People who Live in Food Deserts Triscuit, a brand known for its woven, whole grain wheat crackers, announced the launch of The Missing Ingredients Project, the brand’s firstever purpose-driven effort to help increase access to the variety of affordable, fresh foods lacking in food deserts. Through this initiative, Triscuit is committing $1 million in grant funding over the next three years to find and support individuals and non-profit organizations who are developing innovative ways to advance access to a variety of fresh, nourishing food in food deserts across the United States. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, approximately 19 million people— 6.2 percent of the United States population—live in food deserts. These are geographic areas, either urban or rural, where access to affordable, healthy food options, including fresh fruits and vegetables, is limited or non-existent. In food deserts, access is often restricted by several factors including distance to the grocery store, the number of stores in the area, family income and availability of transportation. According to the USDA, food deserts are described as low-income areas where at least 500 people, or at least 33 percent of the population, is greater than 1.0 mile from the nearest supermarket or large grocery store for an urban area or greater than 10 miles for a rural area. “It’s a crisis that demands our attention, and as a brand, we knew we had to take action,” said Sally Barton, senior brand manager, Mondelez International. Starting in early 2021, the brand will invite local nonprofits to apply for one of 20 $50,000 grants to help fuel and fortify their work. The Missing Ingredients Project will award six grants in 2021 and the remaining 14 grants be awarded in 2022 and 2023. Changemakers will be selected on the strength of their solutions, the impact of their work and their ability and desire to scale their plans to reach even more people. Triscuit is also partnering with James Beard award-winning New Orleans chef, Nina Compton, and L.A. based chef/restaurateur Ludo Lefebvre, to raise awareness of the issue and help Triscuit engage with changemakers. -PR Newswire

Certain Foods May Help Prevent Clogged or Hardened Arteries

Atherosclerosis occurs when fatty deposits accumulate along artery walls. You may have heard the condition referred to as clogged arteries or a hardening of the arteries. This causes the arteries to narrow and restricts blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body. Atherosclerosis is considered a major underlying cause of heart disease, including coronary artery disease, the most common type of heart disease in the United States. Atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of about 50% of deaths in Western countries. It’s a chronic inflammatory disease with numerous risk factors. Foods that may help prevent clogged arteries. 1. Berries 2. Beans 3. Fish that is high in omega-3-rich fats 4. Tomatoes and tomato products 5. Onions 6. Citrus fruits 7. Some spices, including ginger, pepper, chili and cinnamon 8. Flax seeds 9. Cruciferous vegetables 10. Beets A healthy diet rich in nutrient-dense foods may help reduce your risk of developing clogged arteries. Research has shown that adding foods like cruciferous vegetables, fish, berries, olive oil, oats, onions, greens, and beans to your diet may be an effective way to prevent atherosclerosis. All of the foods listed above offer many other benefits as well. Adding them to your daily routine may significantly decrease your risk of disease and boost your overall health. -Healthline.com

Don’t Fall Victim to Road Rage Anyone who commutes to and from work knows how easily traffic can turn into an exercise in frustration. As tempting as it is to retaliate for rude driving, don’t make a bad situation worse. Follow these safety rules: n Don’t escalate aggression. That means don’t tailgate a driver who tailgated you first or flip the bird to a rude driver. Responding to the road bullies may only increase hostilities. n Don’t make eye contact. Remember that you don’t know a thing about that driver or what frame of mind he or she’s in. Don’t risk a confrontation. n If you’re being followed by a hostile driver, don’t go home. Drive instead to a public place like a gas station or restaurant. Better yet, head to a police station if one is nearby. If you have a cell phone, call the police and report the driver. n Never get out of your car. A confrontation at a stoplight is not worth risking violence. The other driver may have some kind of weapon. If the driver gets out of the car, lock your doors and close your window. If you can drive away, do so. If you have a cell phone, call the police. n Follow the golden rule. The best defense against road rage is to drive as you would have others drive.

Often compared to the famous Hattie B’s in Nashville, Fry the Coop has mastered the flavors, heat and texture of the Southern favorite. “We’re incredibly thankful that we’re able to continue expanding,” says owner Joe Fontana. “We’re excited to bring our chicken to new corners of the Chicago area, including the north side in Prospect Heights. We already have loyal customers from the south suburbs at our Oak Lawn location and now we’re bringing the chicken to them in Tinley Park!” The Tinley Park location is scheduled to open this winter and will be at 16703 S. Harlem Ave. The restaurant will take over the space where Fajitas Mexican Restaurant previously called home. The 2,800-square-foot space will have 62 seats with a full drive-thru window on the corner of a strip center. The drive-thru functionality comes at the perfect time during a year of quarantines and social distancing. Both restaurants will temporarily serve only via drive-thru, takeout and delivery orders. The dining rooms of all Fry the Coop locations will remain closed until further notice. The fast-casual eatery will continue to bring the heat with its simple menu. Each piece of made-to-order chicken is juicy, flavorful, and spiced to perfection, depending on your heat level! Whether you want it “crazy” hot (call 911) or “country” (no heat), Fry the Coop satisfies your hot chicken fix and transports guests to the South with every crunchy bite! True to the 1930s original from Thornton Prince, owner Fontana uses a spice rub to make Fry the Coop’s heat levels mild, medium, hot and crazy! I’m a fan of spicy and ordered my sandwich hot, which was just the right amount of heat for me. Fry the Coop also has locations at 5128 W. 95th Street, in Oak Lawn; 623 W. North Ave. in Elmhurst; and 1529 W. Chicago Ave. in Chicago. For more information, please visit www.frythecoop.com

Walking near or on train tracks is against the law and trains can overhang tracks by at least three feet. When lights are flashing on, or the gates are down, wait for the train to pass. Top 10 Tips to Achieve Success in the Retail Bakery Business When it comes to snacking, nothing tops fresh bakery products. We asked Ed Lezza Sr., a third-generation baker and patriarch of the Lezza Bakery family for some tips on being successful in the retail bakery business. Here’s what he had to say: 10) Take Care of Employees. Offer not only as nice of a benefits package as you can, but also applaud openly a job well done and criticize in private. 9) Offer Delivery or Curbside Pick Up. This is not only critical for the pandemic, but also for those customers that need this assistance. 8) Clean, Clean, Clean (and Clean Some More). Clean and sanitize hourly and don't neglect door handles, case glass—anything a customer or staffer can touch. 7) Promote your product. Try buy-oneget-one offers, free coffee with bakery item, etc. 6) Advertise! Don't keep your business a secret! Use the resources out there: Food Industry News (if going after wholesale accounts), local churches, neighborhood newspapers, social media outlets for retail sales. 5) Provide Samples of Your Product. That's the best advertising! 4) Listen to your Customers. You need their feedback no matter how much it hurts. 3) Get it in writing. Orders, directions, everything. 2) Quality. Use the best ingredients you can. 1) Be Flexible. Change is inevitable, and your business has to change with the customers’ tastes. When in Elmhurst be sure to visit Lezza Bakery at 544 Spring Road. They are open six days and are famous for their spumoni, cannoli and pastries. If you are a wholesale bakery product buyer, see their ad on page 3 of this issue.

TRAVEL With Valerie Miller DESTINATION: Colorado Ski Country As snow blankets Colorado’s highcountry, Colorado Ski Country USA member ski areas are excited to welcome guests back to the slopes for the 2021 winter season. What guests have come to love about skiing and snowboarding will be refreshingly the same this season. The fresh, crisp mountain air and stunning scenery as well as the world class terrain and world class guest service Colorado is known for will be ready for guests to enjoy on a pair of skis or snowboard this winter. Over the summer and fall, Colorado Ski Country USA member ski areas have been tirelessly working with local and state officials to prepare for this season. Colorado Ski Country encourages all skiers and riders, no matter how experienced, to “Know Before You Go,” long a back-country mantra that will apply to all skiers and riders this year. Guests should visit ski area websites, social media and other channels to ensure they have the most up-todate information on any COVID-19 protocols and understand what is expected during their visit. Colorado Ski Country’s COVID-19 webpage, coloradoski.com/covid-19, will be updated throughout the winter with tips, information and the most up-to-date resort protocols. Many ski areas will require prepurchase of lift tickets, ski school reservations rentals and other activities, and guests should check with the ski area they plan to visit before and leading up to their arrival. Ski parties will be allowed to load lifts and gondolas together at full capacity. Parties that are not together will have at least one seat between them on lifts. Up to two unrelated parties can load a gondola together up to 50 percent capacity. Parties that are uncomfortable riding with other parties will be allowed to ride as a single party. Ski school classes will be limited to under 10 and most ski areas will limit class sizes to between four and six and offer half-day lessons. Ski areas will be following state and local guidance for indoor spaces, lodging, transportation and other activities where appropriate. Highlights include: Loveland Ski Area. Loveland (middle picture) will offer one of the longest seasons in the state, an average of 400 inches of snow and affordable ticket, rental and lesson options, but there will be operational changes. Guests will be required to pre-purchase lift tickets, rental equipment and Ski & Ride School lessons online prior to arrival. Purgatory Resort. Purgatory (top photo) will feature additional drop off areas and general admission plaza where guests will need to be scanned once upon entry and not in each lift line for guest convenience and guest and employee safety. Telluride Ski Resort. Telluride (left photo) will feature 20 refurbished gondolas offering dining options in Mountain Village as well as expanded yurt and outdoor dining services across the mountain. Southwest Airlines and Jet Blue are adding flights to Montrose Regional Airport. Colorado Ski Country USA is the not-for-profit trade association representing Colorado’s 22 ski and snowboard resorts. Colorado Ski Country USA webpage will be updated throughout the Photos courtesy of Colorado Ski Country season. For more info visit coloradoski.com.

New Pop-Up from Chef Bill Kim Chef Bill Kim’s Pizza & Parm Shop, a new virtual restaurant based out of the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook, has opened. Available exclusively for takeout through DoorDash, this pop-up offers the western Chicago suburbs a chance to experience the award-winning chef’s menu of flavors that defy borders, in a time where dining options continue to be limited due to COVID-19 restaurant dining restrictions. “Growing up on the North Side of Chicago, I had a lot of Italian friends and was constantly surrounded by the cuisine. I think part of me even wanted to be Italian!” remarks Kim, a native of Seoul, South Korea, whose family immigrated to Chicago when he was seven. “This menu is a homage to them and my childhood with flavors and dishes I love and that travel incredibly well through delivery.” The menu spotlights Detroit-style pizza, known for its signature square shape and caramelized cheese crust — as Kim says, “a happy medium between Chicago deep dish and thin crust styles.” In addition to pizza, the menu features a classic chicken parmesan entrée and chicken parmesan sandwiches. Chef Bill Kim’s Pizza & Parm Shop hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. This pop-up follows the recent launch of Chef Bill Kim’s Ramen Bar, another concept located in Oak Brook featuring Kim’s creative takes on the universal Asian comfort and cold-weather dish. Both represent new restaurant concepts and menus not present on Cornerstone and Kim’s portfolio of restaurants.

Hershey Invests $1.5M in Thurgood Marshall College Fund The Hershey Company has announced it will invest $1.5 million in the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) to establish a scholarship endowment, with the goal to increase that to $3 million over the next 10 years. The endowment will be used for students pursuing degrees in food science in TMCF-member-schools, which include public colleges that provide advanced education for underrepresented populations. The historic endowment is the first time a company has committed to endow a TMCF scholarship. Donations to TMCF typically go into the organization’s general fund. The Hershey Company increased its support of Black and Brown communities across the United States to help fight racial injustice after the death of George Floyd. Applications for the Hershey Scholarship are open to any student studying food science at a TMCF-partner school. Students of any race are eligible to apply. The scholarships will be awarded to students who are dedicated to innovating within the food industry. -PR Newswire

Chipotle Testing Smoked Brisket

Chipotle Mexican Grill has announced it is testing smoked brisket at 64 restaurants throughout Cincinnati and part of Sacramento, Calif. Chipotle's latest protein features smoked beef brisket that is seasoned with a special spice blend, seared on the grill every day, and finished with a sauce made with Mexican peppers. "We're thrilled to offer a new, responsiblysourced brisket that tastes terrific and meets our industry leading Food with Integrity standards," said Chris Brandt, chief marketing officer. Chipotle is listening, testing and learning from customer feedback before deciding on a national launch strategy. In 2019 and 2020, three Chipotle menu items, carne asada, supergreens salad mix and queso blanco successfully completed the stage-gate process and were rolled out on a national scale. In July, Chipotle announced it is testing cilantro-lime cauliflower rice at restaurants in Denver and throughout Wisconsin, in addition to a digital-only quesadilla in Cleveland and Indianapolis. Brisket will be available for in-restaurant, online, mobile and contactless delivery orders at participating locations for a limited time. -PRNewswire.com

Research Shows Technology’s Affects on Retailers, Consumers “Smartphones have grown to become a huge part of daily life, so it’s only natural that retailers and shoppers are connecting this technology with the grocery buying experience,” said Colin Stewart, executive vice president, business intelligence, at Acosta. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the shopping experience has significantly changed, and many consumers are limiting their trips to the grocery store and being as efficient as possible with their time in the store. To do this, they are looking to mobile solutions more and more.” A research report from Acosta provides a comprehensive breakdown of the latest trends in mobile-assisted and online shopping, including: n Eighty-nine percent of U.S. grocery shoppers are using a smartphone, 22% more than in 2015. n Fifty-eight percent of U.S. shoppers agreed they are comfortable using digital/online tools to assist with grocery shopping, up significantly from 35% of shoppers in 2015. n A shopper’s age/generation strongly correlates with how comfortable they feel using digital tools for grocery shopping, with 74% of Millennial shoppers feeling comfortable compared to less than half of baby boomer shoppers.

How to Keep Your Business Afloat in Uncertain Times Businesses will continue to struggle even as they transition back to normal after restrictions are eased. The Chief Executive website offers this advice for succeeding in uncertain times: n Analyze your expenses. Take a hard look at how you’re spending your organization’s money and look for expenses that you can reduce or eliminate. Can you cut back on your office space to reduce your rent payments? Delay some marketing campaigns that aren’t essential to your business? n Adapt to your market. Look for ways to market your products and services to address current conditions. Maybe you can reposition your brand to help people still affected by the pandemic. n Study your competition. What are other organizations in your marketplace doing? Look for strategies you can emulate and gaps you can fill. n Think long term. In time the pandemic will fade. It may take months or years, but think about what you can do to maintain your position in the marketplace. Keep up with current customers to find out what their needs will be.

Protecting Your Business, Employees While Building Customer Confidence KleenTeem understands there are myriad challenges facing your business or workplace, and downtime following a disinfection and viral remediation treatment shouldn’t be one of them. When taking proactive measures to ensure a safe, clean and pathogenfree environment for customers and employees, further delays or work stoppages— especially on the heels of the industry-wide disruptions faced last year—can rapidly erode any recent gains in confidence. We all know that addressing one threat by potentially treating it with another isn’t the answer; and using traditional disinfecting methods does exactly that. Disinfectants are toxic, and prolonged exposure—which is likely since they must be applied continuously to effectively work—may cause perilous side effects. KleenTeem’s process, featuring Purbloc, is an antimicrobial ecosystem that’s data-driven and customized to mitigate existing threats and establish forward protection against risks. Our products are NSF-51 approved for food safety, non-toxic, and residue-free. They are guaranteed to eliminate a host of pathogens from surfaces, including SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), and enable protection for up to 90 days under certain conditions. Also, Purbloc isn’t just people-safe. It meets strict standards and specifications established by the Boeing company for use their commercial aircraft interiors (Boeing D6-7127 Protocol Designation for aircraft materials and electronics).
