We’ve been working hard to fill the gap during this economic crisis. Thanks to our supporters we’re able to feed a temporary need for thousands as they work towards self-sufficiency.

In February 2010, we released startling new statistics on the number of Delawareans in need of food assistance. Back in 2006, through our network of Hunger-Relief Partners we served 88,400 Delawareans. The Hunger in America 2010 study, a partnership between Mathematic Policy Research, Feeding America and the Food Bank of Delaware, indicated that 241,600 Delawareans were in need of assistance. This number shows that nearly one in four Delawareans depend on our services at one point or another during the year.

While demand was up significantly, the past fiscal year was marked by many achievements at the Food Bank of Delaware.

The Food Bank of Delaware continues to play an important role in helping Delawareans attain economic security. Our hunger-relief programs provide families with resources during times of crisis. To date we have graduated more than 200 students from our Culinary School. Our students go on to careers in the food service industry that provide economic self-sufficiency.

Our Anti-Hunger Coalition continues to work to identify goals, objectives and measurements to make significant contributions towards alleviating hunger in the state of Delaware. This past fiscal year the Coalition sucessfully expanded the Backpack Program, implemented a senior feeding program, started dialogue regarding legislation to opt out of the state prohibition of making food stamps available to individuals convicted of a drug felony and opened food closets in all of the state’s service centers.

We continue to build our collaborative efforts with the state of Delaware. In May 2010 we announced our partnership with Delaware Health and Social Services to open Food Bank-sponsored food closets in all of state service centers.

The food closets were made possible thanks to generous grants from the Acierno Family Foundation and AstraZeneca. All of the food and needed storage units and refrigeration were purchased using the start-up money from the two funders and food closets are stocked by Food Bank drivers and/or volunteers.

Our strategic planning process began and was completed during the past fiscal year. The strategic plan will guide our organization through the next three years. Be on the look out for innovative ways to fight hunger in our community.

The economy continues to improve slowly. However, we know thousands of Delawareans are still struggling. As long as there is a need for food assistance

One Four in

Nearly one in four Delawareans depended on the Food Bank of Delaware’s emergency food assistance services last fiscal year according to a study released by the Food Bank, Mathematica Policy Research and Feeding America.

Hunger in America 2010 reports that 241,600 different people receive emergency food each year through the Food Bank of Delaware’s network of Hunger-Relief Partners. The findings represent an increase of 153,200 people since the findings reported in Hunger in America 2006.

Hunger in America 2010 is the first research study to capture the significant connection between the recent economic downturn and an increased need for emergency food assistance. The number of children and adults in need of food as a result of experiencing food insecurity has significantly increased.

An estimated 17,500 people receive emergency food assistance each week from a food pantry, soup kitchen or other agency served by the Food Bank of Delaware.

“These numbers are not only shocking, but unacceptable,” said Food Bank of Delaware President and CEO, Patricia Beebe. “Through public policy initiatives we need to work with our government leaders to implement new changes that will help Delawareans who are struggling to put food on the table each night. No family or individual in the First State should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.”

The methodology incorporated into the 2010 study includes data collected from February through June, 2009. The Food Bank of Delaware conducted face-to-face interviews with 245 people seeking emergency food at food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs, as well as interviews with 132 agencies that provide food assistance.

Food In...

The Food Bank of Delaware is the only facility in the state of Delaware with the equipment, warehouse and staff to collect donations from all sectors of the food industry while safely and efficiently redistribute them to those who need it most.

In fiscal year 2010 we received more than 11 million pounds of food for the hungry in our community. We secure donated food from community food drives, grocery retailers, grocery wholesale businesses, the United States Department of Agriculture, local farmers, backyard gardeners and more.

Food that arrives at our warehouses in Newark and Milford is inspected and sorted by a dedicated group of volunteers and then boxed by category for distribution. Last fiscal year 15,018 volunteers donated more than 45,000 hours of their time. Volunteers play a critical role in ensuring that all food received is safe for those in need.

Food Out Donated and purchased food products are distributed to close to 242,000 Delawareans in need through several different channels. These channels include: Hunger-Relief Partners: The Food Bank of Delaware does not provide direct assistance, rather we work in conjunction with a network of partners. These partners include soup kitchens, food closets, shelters and other nonprofit organizations who provide emergency food assistance to those in need. Last fiscal year we distributed 7.7 million pounds of food through the network.

Mobile Pantry: The Mobile Pantry program was designed to provide convenient locations and times for people to receive nutritious food. Thirty-pound meal boxes and other supplemental products are distributed from the back of a Food Bank truck. Last fiscal year, 9,297 meal boxes were distributed through the program.

Summer Feeding: Our Summer Feeding Program provides low-income children with nutritious meals during the summer months. 425,649 meals were distributed during the summer of 2010.

After-School Feeding Program: After-School Feeding is a community-based program that provides nutritious meals and snacks to after-school and other enrichment programs.

All meals are served to children in an environment that is safe, accessible and convenient. In the 2009-2010 school year 320,470 meals were produced.

Backpack Program: This program provides food to at-need children for weekends and holidays when school is not in session or federal school meal programs are not available.

Backpacks are stocked with kid-friendly, nutritious food, Last fiscal year 28,051 backpacks were distributed through 49 sites.

Commodity Supplement Food Program (CSFP): CSFP is a federal food program that is designed to improve the health of senior citizens. Food for the program is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture’s agency of Food and Nutrition Service. Eligible seniors must meet income requirements, live in Delaware and be at least 60 years of age.

In addition to providing food assistance to those in need in our community, the Food Bank of Delaware also works to empower individuals to make healthy decisions and work towards financial sustainability through the development of job training skillls. Several of our programs work to address these issues in our community.

Food Supplement Nutrition Education Program: Funded by the United States Agriculture Department’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly Food Stamp Program), this program aims to educate food stamp recipients on healthy eating decisions within a limited budget. Educational workshops are presented by the Food Bank’s Community Nutritionists on four focus areas – dietary quality, food resource management, food security and food safety.

Kid CHEF (Cooking Healthy, Easy Foods): Kid CHEF is a skills and knowledge-building program adapted from the University of Delaware’s Extension module Exploring MyPyramid. This program focuses on teaching children about healthy eating and how they can learn to prepare nutritious easy foods on their own. Each session include child-centered discussions, hands-on activities, recipe making and testing and take-home information for parents. Children receive their own apron, chef hat, oven mitt and drawstring bag of utensils to prepare recipes in each class.

The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware: The Culinary School provides valuable job training to unemployed and underemployed individuals and those in career transition. This 12week program includes 10 weeks of hands-on training in basic and high-end kitchen skills, safe food handling and life skills. The 10-week training culminates with a two-week internship at a food service company, restaurant or catering business. The mission of The Culinary School is two-fold.

First students are taught skills that are highly desirable to employers in the food industry and second, these newly developed skills have the potential to lead to jobs in the industry that provide job security and economic sustainability. To date more than 200 students have graduated from the program.
