Behind-the-mirror dispensers

DUDLEY INDUSTRIES has launched a series of new ‘pull-down’ soap and paper towel dispensers, which represent the latest additions to its ‘Classic Behind-the-Mirror’ range.

The new units include a touch-free 2-litre soap dispenser and large capacity paper towel dispenser. They are designed to operate from behind a mirror or panel and are intended principally for incorporation into bespoke cabinets.

The distinctive ‘pull down’ feature of the new products supports easy replenishment; the new units feature lockable sliding cartridges. They drop down below the bottom of the cabinet, providing easy access to the soap and paper towel containers. Once refilled, they can be raised back and locked in place to protect the consumables from tampering. In this respect, they differ

from many other cabinet systems, which typically require the front-facing mirror to be opened outward like a door.

All the dispensers in the range are designed to be easy to install. They require an aperture to be cut into the cabinet’s base; the dispenser is then inserted and screwed into position. Detailed technical data and installation guides are available.

Supported by a 10-year warranty, all the products in the range have been designed by our team and are manufactured at our production facility in Lytham, Lancashire. Specification details for the new Behind-the-Mirror dispensers are available at NBS Source and bimobject.com

Parcel network implements yard management system

Austrian Post has selected Inform’s Yard Management System (YMS) for its Yard Excellence Tool Integration (YETI) project for deployment to ten sites across its parcel network in Austria.

INFORM WILL deliver its Syncrotess YMS to the sites enabling them to digitalise and optimise yard operations, driving down costs and increasing productivity.

Markus Sekula, Austrian Post project manager at Inform’s Terminal & Distribution Center Logistics Division, says, “Our YMS solutions have very specialised features for post and parcel operators, allowing them to drive strong ROI in an even shorter period of time when compared to general YMS solutions.”

New features that have or will be added to the solution include a new mobile application for gate and driver operations, the implementation of time slot management (appointment system), and a rules engine adding another level of decision-making support within the system.

YETI Project Manager at Austrian Post, Andreas Brenner, commented, “Inform was ultimately selected because of the combination of their team’s rich experience and their YMS being a proven solution already in use with other national post and parcel operators.”

Inform started the project in March 2022 and successfully delivered the pilot site in May 2022. In September 2022, the first new feature was delivered, completely modernising the way gate operators engage with the system via mobile devices instead of a more traditional PC user interface.

Why our protective cases are the best option for transporting military equipment

With 50 years of experience designing and manufacturing bespoke protective cases, military equipment is in safe hands at CP Cases. Focusing on innovation, durability and high-performance materials means that our cases are the perfect choice for those mission-critical situations.

Military equipment needs to be protected against harsh environments, extreme temperatures and rough handling. After years of research and continuously perfecting our designs, we can confidently say that our cases are designed to protect defence equipment against all kinds of hazards. But what sets our cases apart and why are they the best option for the transportation of military equipment? We go into detail below…

Why are our protective cases the best option for transporting military equipment?

With extensive knowledge and expertise from working with NATO, US and UK Defence standards, our protective cases are designed to transport military equipment safely and efficiently. With practical and thoughtful design choices, these are premium military cases for delivering equipment in critical environments.

Durable

Durability is one of the most important features of any protective case, especially when transporting expensive military equipment in missioncritical situations. At CP Cases, we have created ruggedised Amazon Cases that are produced using the rotomoulding process. This uses highquality polyethylene polymer which results in an exceptionally tough case. With extra protection at the corners and edges, our cases are strong and resistant to impacts. Our Amazon Cases are tested to tough military specifications MIL-STD-810F, meaning that they can be relied on even in the most hazardous of environments. The foam inserts add further protection and support, absorbing any impacts in the process of transportation. With durability being of such importance in a military environment, it’s our top priority when designing protective cases.

Lightweight protective cases

Whilst cases need to be strong, they also need to be practical. Often, military equipment needs to be quickly and easily transported, meaning that lightweight material is a must. Polyethylene polymer is ultra-lightweight, which makes transportation on the field in mission-critical scenarios easy and hassle-free. The lightweight material doesn’t sacrifice durability with the rugged design perfect for transit and storage.

Customisable

Every military use case is slightly different, which is why our cases are customisable to suit every transportation need. At CP Cases, we offer custom

designs to meet exacting requirements. With madeto-order sizes available, there’s a protective case for all types of military equipment. Using the latest CAD tools, we can work with you from concept through to production to ensure that your custom protective case is fit for purpose. Our custom specialist foam design provides tailored cushioning for military equipment, made from high-quality ‘closed cell’ polyethylene foam. This means equipment can’t move and suffer from damage during transportation. At CP Cases, we also offer custom colours, labelling and branding to ensure that your protective cases are ready to go right away.

Climate controlled cases

In critical military and defence environments, cases can be exposed to various hazards which could damage expensive and critical equipment. This isn’t the case with our range of protective cases. We offer cases with solid slate climate control Thermoelectric Units (TEU) which are ideal for remote locations with extreme weather. Our nitrogen-blown polyethylene foam inserts guard equipment against chemical contamination or corrosion from the climate or surroundings, meaning equipment is kept safe even in the most extreme situations. With IP ratings from IP54 to IP65 every climatic or environmental hazard

is met head-on with no damage to vital equipment in the process. This is critical during transportation.

Resistant to extreme temperatures

Keeping critical military equipment cool in extreme temperatures is vital to the success of a mission.

CP Cases’ range of COOL Portable Air Conditioning units provides the ideal solution to cooling equipment to prevent damage or failure in the field. Electronic military equipment can be housed and transported in cooling racks to protect components from damaging heat, dust, moisture and corrosion. The exterior of our protective cases is also resistant to extreme temperatures, meaning military equipment can be relied on when needed most.

Military equipment is not only expensive but often vital to the success or failure of a mission. Being able to safely transport and store equipment is a non-negotiable for organisations. At CP Cases, you can rely on our protective cases in extreme environments to withstand all hazards whilst maintaining the quality of your equipment, providing the backbone to your operations.

Exploring the versatility of Waterjet Cutting in Metal Profiling

In the realm of metal fabrication, Charles Day Steels understand that precision and efficiency are paramount. Over the years, various cutting methods have emerged, each with its own advantages and limitations, and as leading providers of metal profiling solutions, we endeavour to develop a series of metal profiling services to meet a range of requirements. One such method that has gained significant popularity is waterjet cutting.

Perfect for a diverse range of applications, profiling via a waterjet machine hosts a range of versatile benefits, some of which include:

Versatility in material compatibility

One of the standout features of waterjet cutting is its compatibility with a wide range of metal materials. Whether it’s aluminium, stainless steel, titanium, copper, brass, or alloys, waterjet cutting can precisely profile these metals without causing any heat-induced distortion or altering their inherent properties. This characteristic is particularly crucial for industries that require intricate cuts and shapes while maintaining the material’s integrity.

Intricate and complex designs

Waterjet cutting technology allows for precise and intricate metal profiling, making it ideal for industries that demand complex designs and tight tolerances. The high-velocity water stream can effortlessly manoeuvre through metal, creating intricate patterns, holes, and sharp corners that may be challenging to achieve using alternative cutting methods. This versatility enables manufacturers to produce intricate components and parts for industries such as aerospace, automotive, architecture, and more.

No Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ)

Unlike traditional heat-based cutting methods like plasma cutting or laser cutting, waterjet cutting operates without generating heat during the cutting process. The absence of heat eliminates the risk of thermal distortion, melting, or hardening of the metal. Consequently, waterjet cutting minimises the formation of a heat-affected zone (HAZ), ensuring that the cut edges retain their original properties, such as strength, hardness, and structural integrity. This characteristic is particularly vital for applications where material properties cannot be compromised.

Environmentally friendly and safe

Waterjet cutting stands out not only for its versatility but also for its eco-friendly nature. The cutting process is typically water-based, and the water used can be recycled and reused, reducing water consumption significantly. Additionally, waterjet cutting does not involve the use of hazardous chemicals or produce harmful fumes, making it a safe and clean cutting method for operators and the environment alike.

Minimal secondary processing

Another advantage of waterjet cutting in metal profiling is the reduced need for secondary processing. The precise

and clean cuts achieved by waterjet technology often eliminate the necessity for additional finishing, such as grinding and deburring. This saves time, labour costs, and ensures a more efficient production process; providing an economically viable alternative.

Charles Day and the Waterjet Sweden BevelJet 60

Charles Day is proud to possess three of the UK’s largest cutting beds for waterjet cutting services, and can profile materials up to 9m x 4m in size. Drawing on relevant technologies as part of our continuous ethos for self-improvement, we have also invested in our latest revolutionary waterjet machine, the Waterjet Sweden BevelJet 60

Renowned as one of the most advanced pieces of metal profiling technology available on the market, this newest addition to our unrivalled suite of profiling machines allows our professionals at Charles Day to meet the most stringent of material specifications. Visual signs can include directional markings across factory floors and warehouses to aid workplace flow and highlight personal safety, to the clear labelling of equipment/machinery, chemical, solvents and acids.

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) stresses the importance of universal clear, legible signage through the following colours:

t Red safety signs signal danger and tend to be in the shape of a thick red circle with a black icon in the middle, with another red line through it. (Under ISO 7010 safety prescriptions and COSHH symbols for hazardous substances)

t Green denotes emergency exits or first-aid services and have a white icon on a green background.

t Yellow indicates hazards and cautionary action for the user, such as high voltage, danger of death or trip hazards and is yellow with a black icon. (Required by the Dangerous Substances (Notification and Marking of Sites) Regulation 1990)

t Blue safety signs indicate mandatory signs such as keeping a fire door shut, wearing protective clothing or placing machine guards in position and are blue circle with a white background.

These signs can be found across many industries from food and beverage, manufacturing, construction, agricultural, energy and many more and are the linchpins of compliant health & safety. They let employees know about correct PPE, equipment usage restrictions, warn about arc flashes in high-voltage areas, through to the handling of hazardous materials and usually fall into four categories: prohibition, warning, mandatory and emergency.

Though many companies are aware of the importance of visual communication and adhere to the H&S guidelines, the label material quality might sometimes be an afterthought, “This can be detrimental and cause more long-term problems. Health & Safety is more than red, green, blue and yellow colours and rectangle, circle and square shapes, labels need to be clear, concise and durable.”

“Certainly, it is imperative that workers also do not become blasé through ‘sign blindness’ and continue to notice clear, visual communication.”

“Our professional label printers create durable labels for unlimited technical applications across many industries.”

“Our Rebo SMS R1 was the result of meticulous R&D over ten years, we poured blood, sweat and tears into this cutting-edge technology. We wanted to produce in-house,

DIY, sign and label production technology to suit the rigorous demands of many industries, with user-friendly input, built-in cutting facility that was capable of printing any shape on vinyl or polyester for longevity.”

“Our labels are weather-tested, in various climatic conditions, so rest assured that your labels will stand the test of time. There’s nothing worse than labels peeling off, due to poor quality and in the realm of H&S, durable labels that go the distance are key,” explained Clinton Church: Sales & Marketing Manager for Export at Rebo B.V.

The industry sign and label printing market is heavily dominated by American and Japanese big players and yet Rebo B.V is a European SME offering unparalleled cuttingedge label printing.

The NiceLabel Software enables in-house designs for industrial labels and with an impressive graphical library depicting over 10,000 industrial symbols, operators can easily design labels or add logos, pictograms, drawings or data bases externally.

“Our new Rebo SMS R1 is a revolution in industrial label printing technology, with the latest advanced touchscreen technology, offering precision-printing at 300DPI. This inhouse sign and label production technology is ideally suited across a range of industries and with the current push towards the circular economy Rebo is adding recyclable materials and consciously sourcing less harmful substrates.

The new innovation is capable of fast in-house product labelling, using a wide range of 14 sharp colours and amazingly, in any shape you desire. As a fully-functional desktop product and with excellent USB/Network connectivity, you can say goodbye to outdated, cumbersome machinery. It is compatible with almost all everyday software, including design software like Adobe/CAD or Rebo recommended label software, such as NiceLabel Software,” concluded Clinton.

Enhanced productivity with high-performance error diagnosis

The Schmersal Group is about to launch a new version of the SD Gateway for its SD bus. Users will be able to take advantage of the improved fault diagnostics offered by the new SDG Fieldbus Gateway. This in turn will help to increase machine and plant productivity by minimising downtime and simplifying commissioning and maintenance. The device is also user friendly and easy to install.

Electronic safety sensors and interlocks with SD interface can transmit comprehensive status and diagnostic data to a higher-level machine control system. Data from the serially connected switchgear is sent via the SD bus to the SDG fieldbus gateway and then passed on via the fieldbus to the machine control unit - enabling

the forwarding of error messages such as overtemperature warnings, faulty actuator warnings and invalid actuator combination messages.

The diagnostic information is transmitted separately from safety signals. Warning notifications enable controlled process shutdown and targeted maintenance so as to prevent process interruptions.

The new variant of the SD Gateway also offers a web server and has a microSD memory card and thus offers the following features:

t Event logs can be evaluated in real time via the web interface.

t Complete diagnostic data from all safety switchgear devices are displayed in plain text in the browser window.

t Devices, such as interlocks and control panels, can be controlled directly via the web interface.

t The microSD card allows event logs to be exported for evaluation and long-term storage.

t The configuration of the series connection is stored

on the microSD card to enable seamless device replacement in case of error.

In the near future, Schmersal will further expand the functionalities of the SDG fieldbus gateway so that the data of the connected safety switchgear can be transmitted not only via EtherCAT, but also via the common fieldbus protocols PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus. In addition, networking options will be expanded through connection to IO-Link and OPC UA communication systems.

An additional and significant benefit of the SD bus system is being retained in the new Gateway: by connecting sensors and interlocks with the SD bus in series (an SD Gateway can communicate with up to 31 safety switchgear devices), this safety solution enables extremely lean wiring and reduces costs without sacrificing Performance Level (series connection for applications up to PL e). Setup and commissioning of an SD installation have been designed to be as convenient and straightforward as possible and all devices receive addresses from the Gateway automatically.

Facing the heat: Tackling diesel engine efficiency with heating technology

New environmental legislation has created an engineering challenge for heavy-duty diesel engines. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitric oxide (NOx) emissions must fall below stricter standards. At the same time, greater engine efficiency has resulted in a corresponding loss of exhaust gas temperature, leading to lower catalytic activity. This is particularly concerning when it comes to NO x emissions for cold start and low load cycles, as a lot of thermal inertia is produced in the after-treatment system. Here, Jeff Diestelmeier, Vice President and General Manager Energy and Environmental Technologies Business Unit at industrial technology company, Watlow, explores how heating technology can improve diesel engine efficiency.

In the past, manufacturers of heavy-duty vehicles have been able to meet emissions standards by making small, incremental

improvements in the engines themselves. These newer, stricter standards will require more of a ‘systems’ approach because of the engineering challenges involved.

To achieve the newer, stricter standards, automobile and truck manufacturers will need to look at other elements of the system – specifically, adding heat to exhaust to increase catalytic activity. An advanced heating strategy has already been shown to be the most efficient means of meeting these NOx emissions standards. In fact, a small heater placed at the intake of the after-treatment system enables its rapid and efficient heating, even during cold start and low load operating conditions. However, having a practical means to power and control this type of heater has been a barrier for implementation.

New outdoor protective housing for infrared cameras under harsh environmental conditions

Precision electronic equipment is difficult to operate in harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, humidity and dust levels and therefore needs adequate protection to function properly. Optris have recently introduced a new outdoor housing for their PI and Xi series of infrared cameras to enable these precision devices to operate in harsh environmental conditions. The housing enables a combination of an infrared camera and a high definition camera in a single compact system with an integrated and compact USB server.

The new housing is IP66 compliant and is therefore suitable for operation in dusty or humid environments. An electrical heating element is included that activates automatically at temperatures below +15°C to enable use in very low temperatures; a ventilation fan circulates warm air evenly within the housing. The system can operates at temperatures ranging from -40°C up to +50°C.

An optional air purge unit continuously clears the protective housing’s window with compressed air while ensuring that no dust or condensation gathers there. This ensures that the infrared camera consistently has clear visibility and can provide precise and reliable temperature measurements.

When operating in conjunction with

the optional HD video camera, with its 1280x720 pixel resolution, combined thermal and optical condition monitoring as well as fire protection applications can fulfilled with precision and confidence.

The integrated USB server transfers the images from the infrared camera and the video camera can be used so that data from both cameras is merged into a single stream; transmission occurs via an Ethernet line. These cameras are therefore easily integrated into existing industrial video control systems.

Reliable and precise gas measurement systems

LogiDataTech supplies innovative gas measurement systems for directly determining gas concentration in a gas mixture. The explosion-proof MF420Ex-2.1 range measures the concentration of toxic or combustible gases and vapours in an explosive air mixture at an ambient temperature range of 0-50°C. They operate by utilising either a pellistor or a specific electrochemical sensor. Calibration is a simple procedure and is carried out on-site using an alphanumeric display with the use of buttons, so the device does not need to be opened. The aluminium housing is suitable for wall mounting. The measured values are outputted via a linear current output (4-20mA) and the evaluation and further processing of the measured values are transmitted to

a device connected downstream by the user. The instruments comply with the current European ATEX standard and are approved for operation in zones 1 and 2.

The future of temperature control

Transforming waste into fuel is one of the most significant ways to become resource efficient and contribute to the landmark targets set by the 2015 Paris Agreement.

Raven SR is a clean fuels company dedicated to achieving this, but the company uses a process that requires high temperatures and precise control to maintain efficiency and costeffectiveness. To streamline its energy transformation process, industrial heating technology company: Watlow provided extensive expertise in thermal system design, as well as Industry 4.0 control.

Watlow designed a comprehensive thermal system to help Raven SR solve this challenge. The system provides an extraordinary range of temperature control through different components. This includes the high-temperature Multicell heater, which offers three major advantages: extreme process temperature capability; independent zone control for precise temperature uniformity; and loose fit design for easy insertion and removal.

Watlow also connected the system to other sensors for gas composition, flow and pressure. Using the Watconnect control

panels, it could monitor all thermal and electrical characteristics to ensure proper process stability for the application. The work done by Raven SR is a crucial step in achieving clean energy and greater energy independence. Not only does the process prevent more waste ending up in landfills, but the company’s products can also be created locally and delivered directly to petrol stations without the need for long-distance transportation or pipelines.

E-Lit Solution opens up new possibilities in research, development and quality assurance

InfraTec E-LIT – Lock-In Thermography for Electronics is an automated testing solution system (as part of NDT techniques) which allows noncontact (electrical) failure analysis of semiconductor material during the manufacturing process. Inhomogeneous temperature distribution, local power loss, leakage currents, resistive vias, cold joints, latch-up effects and soldering issues can be measured with Lock-in Thermography. This is achieved by using the shortest measurement times combined with a high-performance thermographic camera and a specialised lock-in procedure.

Smallest defects at electronic components like point and line shunts, issues from overheating, internal (ohmic) shorts, oxide defects, transistor and diode failures on a PCB surface, in integrated circuits (IC´s), LED modules and battery cells can be detected and displayed in x and y positions. Additionally, it is possible to analyse stacked-die packages or multi-chip modules in z-direction with merely changing the lock-in frequency.

E-LIT is extremely powerful in resolving smallest geometrical structures as it can be equipped with strong microscopic lenses and additional SIL lenses. Identifying smallest structures with E-LIT does not mean that the resulting field of view will also be smallest –implementing thermal cameras with detector sizes of up to (1,920 x 1,536) pixels provides large scale microscopic imaging. For even larger imaging stitching options are available.

Hectare Trading

Hectare Trading, formerly known as Graindex, was rebranded last November introducing enhanced features designed to make grain trading smart, simple and effective. The app puts farmers in control, broadening their trading opportunities by connecting them with verified and credit-checked buyers across the UK.

The new app enables farmers to trade with the largest network of buyers around the UK, to compare the latest ex-farm prices on offer and read breaking news from trusted sources. And the best part? It’s free for farmers.

The new features were developed based on valuable feedback from existing customers, resulting in the ability to receive bids from buyers for different movement months and tonnage volume.

Launched in 2016 by CEO Jamie McInnes and arable farmer Andrew Huxham, Hectare Trading has emerged as the UK’s leading grain marketplace.

“By connecting an entire network of buyers and sellers directly and providing the tools to trade quickly and confidently, we are making it easier than ever to find fair prices and increase efficiency. This is a win-win for everyone involved in the grain supply chain.” Andrew Huxham
