Hidealoo launches space changing foldaway toilet bracket

Hidealoo’s moveable frame offers a smart solution, whether creating a sleek design feature, or aiding the installation of toilets in small and hard to fit spaces.

It allows a toilet to be swivelled 90º meaning it can be hidden inside a cavity wall or cabinet. As well as creating more flexible floor space and additional counter areas, this gives greater options for homes where adding a new bathroom may not otherwise be possible. For example, allowing a toilet to be fitted within a utility room cupboard, bedroom wardrobe, or underneath loft eaves.

For wet rooms, as well as allowing the same space to be used as a shower, a

further benefit of folding the pan away is that it stays dry.

The frame is manufactured in Britain and works with any standard UK wall hung ceramic pan and 110mm waste pipe. It has been tested to hold 400kg in weight and successfully operated through 250,000+ cycles.

It is already proving popular for a diverse range of uses and dwellings, from period and prime residences, to traditional family homes, modern new builds, flats and hotels.

Six days instead of six months delivery

Motor customers in the UK appreciate Menzel Elektromotoren’s fast delivery capability. Two of them recently contacted the German family-run company after experiencing motor failures, which meant that the water supply to 30,000 households was threatened and production in a cement plant was halted. After delivery times of only six and ten days, respectively, both the pump and the cement mill could be restarted in the shortest imaginable time. Faced with unexpected downtime due to equipment failures, customers often cannot afford to wait for a motor manufactured from scratch – standard delivery times in higher output ranges start at six months.

Menzel has proven a strong partner in an emergency, quickly configuring suitable motor systems for a wide range of high-output applications from its large, diverse stock of motors, cooling units and ancillary equipment – such as the current two jobs for British customers. The squirrel-cage pump motor has a nominal output of 1380kW operating

Menzel’s large warehouse and modular design for motors and coolers allow fast delivery of tailored motor systems for industrial applications (here: 2,000kW 11kV cement mill motor)

at 3,300V. The slip-ring motor for a cement mill delivers 2,000kW at 11kV. Its special features are increased ingress protection rated IP55 and a closed cooling system with a top-mounted air-to-air heat exchanger (cooling type IC 611), ideal for dusty environments and large temperature fluctuations.

Industrial market in transition: Denny Precision Ltd. relies on Surplex for machine auction

When closing a business, many challenges arise for the owner. It is wise to seek the help of a specialist for the sale of used machinery during a business closure. The English Engineering company Denny Precision Ltd. also relied on experts: Over 100 machines are up for auction at the industrial auction platform Surplex closing on 28th June.

The industrial market in the United Kingdom is facing a series of unprecedented challenges. The consequences of Brexit are among the greatest difficulties. Trade barriers, customs duties, and supply chain issues are troubling companies. The procurement of raw materials and spare parts can become a bottleneck, while competitive pressure is steadily increasing.

Added to this are geopolitical influences such as the aftermath of the pandemic and political tensions that exacerbate supply chain problems and drive-up prices. The rising energy costs add to the economic strains. For companies that are struggling to maintain their production capacity under these conditions, closing the business may be the only way out – especially if rising costs unsettle the buyer base or if a succession arrangement cannot be found. When a company is dissolved, disposing of the inventory is one of the hard steps to take.

The competent partner for used machinery

However, it is often difficult to know how to get the most out of buying or selling a machine. In this context, Surplex offers an excellent solution with its full-service offering to support interested parties in their purchase or sale of used

machinery. Surplex is a globally active industrial auction house for trading in metal, wood, construction machinery, and other industries. With locations in 16 European countries, companies can count on competent support tailored precisely to the requirements and regulations of their region.

Antony Reed is the Surplex Country Manager for the UK. As an expert in the UK machinery trade, he emphasises the importance of the symbiosis between online trade and simultaneous full-service offer: “Surplex takes pride in being the fastest growing auction platform in the UK. This success is rooted in our unique understanding of our customers’ needs and expectations. It is crucial for UK businesses to engage directly with local partners. Our platform enables exactly that, providing utmost efficiency and trust.”

In these turbulent times, companies need a reliable partner more than ever. A partner who safely navigates them on the rough sea of the used machinery market and who helps them to clear their production halls on time and cost-effectively.

Machine auction after business closure

Denny Precision Ltd., a respected company in metal processing, has made a difficult decision given the increasingly demanding market situation: the closure of the company. Therefore, the inventory, including the operational and manufacturing equipment, is now being offered for sale through the industrial auction house Surplex.

Until 28/06/2023, you can browse and bid on the rich offer from Denny Precision Ltd. on Surplex.com. This sale includes many 5-axis multi-pallets machining centres, a FANUC Robodrill automated system, many late-model STAR Swiss machines, and much more. The systems are in showroom condition and under power. An on-site inspection in Norwich is possible by arrangement. Interested parties can also browse through the factory hall via a virtual online 3D tour.

UNISIG makes significant investment in plant technology and equipment

UNISIG, a global manufacturer of deep hole drilling machines, has invested $1.5 million in stateof-the-art technology and equipment for the company’s newly constructed 5,000-square-foot fabrication department.

The expansion supports the company’s strategy to develop in-house, design-to-finish production of high-quality sheet metal components used

in UNISIG’s product line. By producing many of its parts in-house, the company can preserve and maintain the quality and quantity of its components while optimising the mix of parts that are made internally versus those that are outsourced for production.

The investment includes the installation of fibre laser cutting equipment, and a 242-ton capacity press brake with a 7-axis programmable back gage, all of which utilises 3D programming and simulation software. The software and training for the company’s workforce were part of the investment, along with the hiring of additional personnel.

The company’s new fabrication capabilities will also serve as an inspiration and catalyst for ongoing development and advances in machine design that will have an immediate impact on the value UNISIG brings to its

customers now and in the future, said UNISIG CEO, Anthony Fettig.

“The most exciting part of this investment from my view is the opportunity to fundamentally change how we think about the design of fabricated components. Our engineers will be inspired by the manufacturing innovations generated by the precision fabrication team and what we can do with these state-of-the-art production capabilities,” Fettig said.

UNISIG’s fabrication enhancements also include MIG and TIG welding with advanced digital process control and weld boom with power assist. A modular fixture system provides precision component setup from 3D models, while a vertical pallet system stores raw sheet material. To assist department personnel, vacuum sheet lifting equipment and updated bridge crane controls make for easy material handling.

Further information on all machines and the complete UNISIG machine programme is available at: www.unisig.com or follow the company on LinkedIn and Twitter (@UNISIG).

Stylographics sets new trends with Marc Jacobs and Soyang Europe

The large-format print and Fabrication Company recently used Print Floor from Soyang Europe to help create an eye-catching retail display for world famous design brand Marc Jacobs

Watford-based large-format print and specialist fabrication company Stylographics recently used Print Floor from Soyang Europe to produce a striking retail window display for global fashion brand Marc Jacobs.

A diversified business, Stylographics works with clients across a wide range of markets, producing all kinds of inspiring print applications. The company counts a number of high-profile brands amongst its customers including Costa Coffee, Lindt, Primark, Sony and Netflix.

Among these clients is Marc Jacobs, which has partnered with Stylographics on a series of projects to showcase its brand in a number of innovative ways. The latest collaboration was a retail window display at one of Marc Jacobs’ stores.

Stylographics was tasked with creating an eye-catching display that would help draw the attention of passers-by and tempt them into the store to view some of the latest products from Marc Jacobs. The design featured a bold black and white pattern that was to stretch around the entire window frame.

With this in mind, Stylographics opted to use Print Floor, a PVC flooring material from Soyang Europe ideal for use in

applications such as floor graphics and retail displays. Stylographics used its Durst P10 250HS UV inkjet printer to print the design onto the material.

“Having used Print Floor from Soyang Europe for a number of years and on a whole range of projects, we knew straight away that this application would require the same solution,” said Siobhan Storey, Marketing Manager, at Stylographics.

“What stands out for us and what we like the most about Print Floor is that it is a very hard-wearing and reliable product; we rely on it time and time again for all sorts of applications.”

Stylographics is a long-term customer of Soyang Europe, having worked together for more than 10 years. Speaking about this relationship, Siobhan said that the service from Soyang Europe goes much further than simply supplying and delivering materials.

“Soyang Europe are always on hand for advice and technical back up when required,” Siobhan said. “As Stylographics is an innovative company, we are impressed by the range of materials they hold and we are always keen to see new products they bring to the market.”

Soyang and Josero appointed resellers for Vivid Laminating Technologies’ Veloblade range

The agreement will cover the entire portfolio of VeloBlade machines, with Soyang Europe and Josero to focus on the Nexus range in particular.

Soyang Europe, the leading manufacturer and distributor of digitally printable wide-format and superwide-format media and surface coverings, and – through its acquisition of Josero – a supplier of leading edge wide and superwideformat print production hardware, are delighted to announce that they have been appointed as approved resellers of the VeloBlade range of digital die cutters from leading print finishing manufacturer Vivid Laminating Technologies. Customers will be able to access the full range of market leading digital cutting solutions through Soyang Europe and Josero.

The partnership officially launches at The Print Show 2023, which takes place from 19-21 September at the NEC in Birmingham.

Soyang Europe and Josero will offer customers access to the entire VeloBlade collection but will primarily focus on the highly popular Nexus range, which includes the VeloBlade Nexus 2516, a wide-format digital die cutter with a bed size of 2,500mm x 1,600mm.

User-friendly features on the machine include an automatic cut depth setting, while when combined with a CNC router, the system enables users to work with stocks up to 25mm thick including materials such as Dibond, MDF and acrylic.

To showcase the leading quality of VeloBlade cutting to customers, Soyang Europe and Josero have purchased a VeloBlade Nexus 2516 for live demonstrations at their showroom in Accrington.

“We have done our due diligence on other solutions and are really excited to be partnering with Vivid on this product,” Soyang Europe and Josero Group Sales Director Sarah Fenna said. “We have worked with Vivid for many years selling their laminator range and we already have a trading relationship. We were flattered when Vivid approached us to discuss expanding this arrangement. The fact that VeloBlade

machines are manufactured and assembled in the UK is key for us; they are very well built and offer tremendous value for money to users. Our technical team is looking forward to working with customers to help them identify the best solution for their business.”

The machine will also be in action on the Vivid Laminating Technologies stand (C01) at The Print Show 2023.

Delivering quality solutions to customers

Lewis Evans, Managing Director of Vivid, adds, “We are delighted to strengthen our relationship with a great company. We have worked with Soyang Europe and

Josero previously on our Easymount machines and it was a really sensible move to partner with them on our VeloBlade range.

“They have a space in their portfolio for a top-quality digital cutter and router. We fit the bill mainly because of the aftercare service we offer at Vivid. If they were to buy in kit from abroad, customers would not get the support that they require and Soyang Europe and Josero pride themselves on. Vivid is able to offer highquality support with our expert customer service team in the UK.

“It’s not just the quality of the product but how well their customers will be looked after when the sale completes.”

Lewis also spoke about the potential to expand the relationship with Soyang Europe and Josero further, saying that like Vivid, the company is committed to ongoing R&D to bring more solutions to market.

“The people that work at Soyang Europe and Josero was one of the main drivers behind the new deal,” Lewis said. “Like us, they are very forward-thinking and committed to developing new and innovative products. They know there will be new products coming soon from us that they can add to their portfolio and offer to their customers.”

Visitors to The Print Show 2023 can find out more about the new partnership and speak with Vivid, Soyang Europe and Josero experts on the Vivid Laminating Technologies stand.

Vivid will also be launching its brand new VeloBlade Board Runner at The Print Show. This solution will auto-feed the substrate onto all models in the VeloBlade range, removing the need for manual hand loading by operators.

Thermal Printer Support: The UK’s leading specialist supplier

Labels are everywhere!

And we certainly take labels for granted. But what about the hidden cost of waste behind traditional labelling?

Thermal Printer Support Ltd (TPS), the UK’s leading specialist supplier of thermal transfer and direct thermal printers, says disposing of liner labelling material remains challenging. It’s driving a growing demand for alternative, greener linerless label printers as companies are under growing pressure from government and consumers to reduce waste associated with liner labels, often ending up in landfill.

Harford Control celebrates great success at PPMA 2023

We were delighted to return to the PPMA Show at NEC, Birmingham this year. We achieved great success and were pleased to meet both our old friends and to make new ones from a wide range of businesses.

Understanding performance improvement, we presented unique and holistic solutions to help address increasing challenges within the manufacturing supply chain.

Facing joint challenges such as supply chain disruptions, rising raw material prices, sustainability and environmental concerns, many manufacturers actively sought advanced digital solutions to ensure product quality, reduce wastage, and improve production performance internally, whilst eliminating the paper chase. Also, through smart integration, we offered a cost effective alternative to piece meal systems.

Linerless solutions are used successfully for many applications, from food and beverage to pharmaceutical labelling, retail and parcel delivery. Available as desktop

With no downtime changing ribbons or labels as you can mark directly onto most products, productivity goes skyhigh! Laser marking is also permanent, so great for counterfeit prevention, traceability or use-by marking. Marking at speeds of up to 540m/minute, it far exceeds what’s possible with thermal transfer or direct thermal printing.

Our proven process: How UNISIG leverages experience & expertise to solve customer challenges

For over 40 years, we’ve helped our customers achieve success in deep hole drilling, providing them with the machines, automation and support they need to be competitive and profitable.

We have found that the initial energy we and our customers spend at the beginning of a quoting process pays off throughout the entire project, from inception to installation. We take a systemised approach not only during this critical phase but also throughout the entire sales process. This ensures there are no surprises and that our customers know exactly what they can expect when starting discussions with UNISIG about their gundrilling and deep hole drilling needs.

This is our approach at UNISIG:

1. We listen to our customers, ask questions and understand what they need This may seem obvious, but often the temptation is there to just skip to a quote because we think we know what is needed after a brief discussion. Sometimes that is true, when the application is straightforward and familiar, or it is something we have a packaged solution for. We always try to make the quoting process quick and efficient, but there are times when the application deserves a more in-depth conversation. Our salespeople and engineers listen very carefully and often pick up on small details – a specific tolerance, material condition, process requirement or a future need for flexibility – that may change our recommendations.

When it makes sense, our experienced sales team or engineers will visit a customer to see what is needed firsthand. Whether a site visit or just a virtual meeting, this initial investment of time to clarify the need saves the customer money and provides them a truly valuable solution.

future needs. For us, initially working within the boundaries of our catalogue cultivates new ideas that can then be applied to improve our standard products as well as help us direct future research and development budgets.

3. If a standard solution isn’t available, we consider a customised solution and we stand behind it UNISIG is very good at building customised machines, and we do so often. Once we and our customers agree that a special solution is needed, we move forward with a great deal of confidence and experience. We start by evaluating how we might approach the design using standard modules or proven concepts, thus eliminating long debug cycles and/ or high costs. Then we use our mechanical and electrical engineering disciplines to virtually test the new machine before we build it.

One of the key reasons our customers are confident moving forward with a UNISIG custom machine is that they know we will stand behind it and that we have substantial capabilities to ensure it always exceeds their production expectations. We approach these special projects with the mindset that a custom machine will be used for decades in production, which is why we provide the same documentation and long-term technical support for all our machines whether standard or custom.

2. We first identify a standard solution from our product line that can be applied at the lowest cost and shortest delivery possible.

At UNISIG, our product development mindset is to systemise solutions from our experience in many different industries, make them automation ready and embed application flexibility whenever possible. We invest millions of dollars annually in our product line and related spare parts, giving us a strong starting point for new applications. Our standard product line encompasses much more than machines, including standard automation, workholding, accessories and tooling that we can offer as part of the solution.

Once we have identified a standard machine as a starting point, our engineers seek out smart, practical ways to meet the customer’s application needs. The goal is to innovate within the machining operation planning, work holding or automation, as opposed to engineering a completely special solution without first exhausting opportunities to solve problems with standard products.

For our customers, this approach provides them a reliable, standard machine that can be used for many years and that has the built-in flexibility for easy re-tooling to adapt to

4. If a commodity solution is readily available, we recommend that rather than upsell a machine the customer doesn’t need We build machines that can gundrill or BTA drill deep holes that are impossible to drill on machining centres. Even if it may be possible to drill some deep holes on a CNC machining centre, our machines have the power, speed, dimensional accuracy, spindle density, coolant systems and process control that will improve productivity, tool life and reliability.

Typically, though, when a customer comes to UNISIG with a specific part need, at that point they’ve most likely already struggled with a conventional machine and realised that a deep hole drilling machine is obviously the way to go.

However, our team knows how to identify whether or not an application would truly benefit from a UNISIG solution. When it wouldn’t, we will suggest viable alternatives. It’s not that we don’t want to sell a machine. But the fact is that our experience has shown that at some point the alternativesolution direction becomes obvious, and we want to make that apparent early on in the process so as to avoid wasting a lot of our customer’s time.

Our customers expect the best from us, and we believe that our proven process ensures we never disappoint. Our goal is to leverage our core values to serve our customers as best we can and build strong, productive relationships for years to come. www.unisig.com

Award-winning resin flooring from 100% recycled waste plastic

Our fragile planet is at catastrophic risk from waste plastic, with numerous quantities ruining our bountiful oceans, endangering marine life, human health and ecosystems.

Harmful chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates in plastic can cause havoc in soil chemistry and landfill groundwater. Abacus Flooring Solutions is a multi-award-winning specialistflooring manufacturer from Coalville, Leicestershire that has come up with a landmark innovation. By using waste plastic (that would otherwise go to landfill) in industrial resin flooring, the East Midlands based company has revolutionised the flooring industry.

The groundbreaking patented innovation is named ‘Abaplas’ and is the brainchild of Managing Director, Nick Megson. It is the first exclusive design in the world of its kind, providing a wholly sustainable, eco-friendly flooring method. Established in 2020, the company designs, manufactures and installs resin flooring for a wide range of industries from industrial, commercial to healthcare. With a dedicated aftercare service, customers benefit from an annual follow-up site visit for cleaning advice and slip testing. Furthermore, the sister company: Abaplas Recycling Limited treats all the plastic recycling for Abacus resin flooring products and initiates the sales of treated plastic for use by other product manufacturers.

We caught up Nick Megson, Managing Director to find out more about this awardwinning company,

“Our products are intrinsically more environmentally friendly than any other flooring product on the market: there is currently no competitor offering a resin flooring that entirely replaces harmful silica sand with 100% recycled waste plastic.” “Resin flooring, along with many other industrial products, has traditionally been manufactured using silica sand, which is a dangerous and potentially carcinogenic substance when inhaled.” “Abaplas instead contains non-harmful recycled waste plastic, which is ground down to a white powder. The process will vastly reduce the volume of waste plastic ending up in landfill or the world’s oceans.”

“The world’s first resin flooring using 100% recycled plastic was installed by Abacus in the enormous VIP Visitor Centre auditorium at JCB’s global headquarters in Staffordshire, UK.” The future looks bright for this flagship company as it sets a new benchmark for sustainable usage of plastic waste in flooring for years to come, “It is expected that Abaplas Recycling Limited will grow exponentially over the next few years as more clients specify Abacus’s 100% recycled waste plastic flooring. Rapid growth is also expected as Nick’s unique process becomes adapted for use in a much broader range of flooring, construction and industrial products,” concludes Nick.

Silencing the Mining Industry: Noise Measurement Solutions

The mining industry, a cornerstone of modern civilisation, fuels economic growth and technological advancement. However, noise from mining operations can affect both employees and the surrounding environment, with the same noise sources contributing to both occupational and environmental noise.

Protect your workers hearing, ensure compliance with occupational noise regulations, reduce the number of community noise complaints and ensure you’re compliant with noise regulations and permits by choosing Cirrus Research.

Preserving worker health and safety

One of the most important reasons for monitoring noise in the mining industry is to safeguard the health and well-being of workers. Mining operations often involve heavy machinery, explosions, and high-impact activities that generate intense noise levels. Prolonged exposure to such noise can result in irreversible hearing loss and other health issues.

By implementing comprehensive noise monitoring systems, mining companies can identify areas of excessive noise and take proactive measures to reduce exposure. This not only protects workers’ hearing but also enhances overall occupational safety.

Mitigating community disruption

Mining sites are frequently located near residential areas, leading to potential conflicts between mining operations and local communities. Uncontrolled noise from mining activities can disrupt the daily lives of residents, affecting their sleep, communication, and overall quality of life.

Effective noise monitoring allows mining companies to track noise emissions, identify sources of disturbance, and implement mitigation strategies. This proactive approach fosters better community relations and ensures that mining operations coexist harmoniously with nearby residents.

Regulatory compliance

Stringent noise regulations are in place to

minimise the impact of industrial activities on the environment and human health. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in fines, legal repercussions, and reputational damage.

By consistently monitoring noise levels and environmental impacts, mining companies can demonstrate their commitment to adhering to regulations and being responsible corporate citizens.

Environmental responsibility

Mining operations have far-reaching ecological consequences beyond noise pollution. Dust, water pollution, habitat destruction, and land degradation are among the environmental impacts associated with mining. Monitoring these impacts helps mining companies identify areas for improvement, implement sustainable practices, and minimise their ecological footprint.

This commitment to environmental responsibility aligns with the growing global focus on sustainability and contributes to the preservation of natural resources for future generations.

Innovation and continuous improvement

Monitoring noise and environmental impacts isn’t just about meeting regulatory requirements; it’s about driving innovation and continuous improvement. By analysing data collected through monitoring systems, mining companies can identify patterns, optimise processes, and find novel solutions to reduce noise and minimise environmental effects. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also positions mining companies as leaders in responsible resource extraction.

How can Cirrus Research help?

At Cirrus Research, we provide a range of products that are perfect for monitoring

the personal noise exposure of workers on your site, and the impact that your site has on the environment.

▼ The Intrinsically Safe doseBadge Noise Dosimeter is the perfect personal noise dosimeter to be used in explosive atmospheres and hazardous zones.

Providing solutions for your force or torque measurement applications

Interface Force is an internationally recognised brand and decades of experience have gone into making Interface manufactured load cells the benchmark for thousands of users around the world, and Interface Force Measurements was established in 1996 by Neil Johnstone.

Based in Crowthorn, Berkshire, Interface Force distributes to the whole of the UK & Ireland, but also overseas, especially into Turkey, Greece and the Middle East. The company is a primary distributor for Load Cells manufactured by Arizona-based

Interface Inc, and it also supplies their Torque Transducers, associated electronics, multi-access Load Cells and the XSensor Pressure Mapping systems.

The global Interface Inc. is represented by a large network of distributors outside of the US, and they have requested products that are designed and manufactured in metric, with the precision and accuracy of all Interface products. These products are designed for an international buyer and user, and all specifications are in metric specs, a global standard for force measurement products.

Interface Force work mainly with aerospace, automotive, and motorsport companies, and Business Development Manager, Tony Rokins, told us, “We work closely with companies which are undertaking research into product development, and so this includes universities and also medical companies who need load cells for weighing saline

bags – we have a very wide and varied client portfolio.”

In this crowded industry, Interface load cells and torque sensors have a hard-won reputation for reliable, accurate and repeatable test results. The range of pressure sensors and pressure mapping systems from industry leaders GP50 & XSensor back this reputation.

Tony continued, “With regards to force measurement, our load cells are preferred by aerospace companies because they are highly accurate, and the results are very repeatable. Also, the devices themselves are extremely reliable and so they are looked on very favourably by both automotive and aerospace manufacturers in particular.”

Interface Force is currently re-launching its XSensor High Speed Pressure Mapping System –the company offers a range of pressure mapping systems that can be applied to anything from impact testing to pressure testing tires, runways, beds, seats and much more. The XSensor system is the first system design to allow product designers and safety testing engineers to see, record and evaluate the distribution of force from high-speed impacts on safety equipment such as helmets and body armour.

The system is particularly popular with automotive and aerospace seating manufacturers as evaluating the performance of helmets and other protective equipment designed to prevent injury requires detailed understanding of the pressure distribution on the body surface during dynamic impacts. Xsensor’s high speed HS Impact system combined with the thin conformable sensors allows customers to accurately measure those pressures and evaluate how different design configurations affect pressure distribution on impact.

In addition to this, the system is also used by manufacturers of office seating, companies that develop seating for the home, and bed manufacturers.

In spite of its success in the industry, Interface Force is very much looking to future development. Tony informed us, “We are building new Applications

Industry Update is sponsored by EEMUA – see them on page 9 24 Test & Measurements Update

which are based around renewable energy, and we are also developing Cloud-based, Wifi and Bluetooth data acquisitions by making our devices wireless. This would mean customers being able to collect data from anywhere in the world via an App.”

This ever-growing comprehensive range of indicators, signal amplifiers, data loggers and wireless transmitters has been designed to complement the extensive range of load cells, torque transducers and pressure sensors, and the range has developed to ensure that customers have access to the most accurate, up-

to-date, and cost-effective devices available.

Another new development is in the Airport environment, where Interface Force have begun to provide wireless monitoring of equipment on, for example, luggage carousels, and this product among many others have helped Interface Force to have a very successful past 12 months especially.

Interface Force’s product reliability is second to none and all of its product lines have to match this standard before ever being recommended to customers. Interface is the world’s trusted leader in technology, design and manufacturing of force measurement solutions. Its clients include a ‘who’s who’ of so many industries, and the company’s engineers around the world are empowered to create high-level tools and solutions that deliver consistent, high-quality performance.

IEP Technologies: Global explosion protection solutions

In this issue of Industry Update, we are delighted to select IEP Technologies as our Leading Explosion Protection Solutions Company of the Month.

Deflagration explosions can occur in industries from wood and coal, to food powders, confined to specific processing equipment such as: Dust Collectors, or Pneumatic Conveying. The flame travels at high-speed and quickly evolves into a volatile, pressurised shock wave, with the unfortunate likelihood of a secondary explosion.

IEP Technologies is a global market-leader in explosion protection; offering a multitude of protection solutions: from simple passive solutions such as venting, flameless venting and isolation, through to more complex active systems such as suppression, chemical barriers and mechanical highspeed valves.

IEP Technologies’ impressive safety record has come from a rich heritage, spanning over 60 years. Established in 1956 as an early adopter of industrial explosion protection, the company, then named Graviner helped protect many industrial processing sectors in the aftermath of the Second World War. Graviner thwarted 35 industrial explosions by 1959 and over the many decades, grew to become a true global-leader. With its expert history to date, it has continued to be trusted by companies across all five continents.

In 2015, it was acquired by the HOERBIGER Safety Solutions Group; machine manufacturer heavyweight with an illustrious history in the automotive and compression industries.

Now with access to global facilities across Europe, US, Latin America and Asia, with a steadfast team across R&D, consultation to service and maintenance, IEP is poised to support process industries with advanced, cuttingedge explosion protection solutions.

We spoke to Matt Elliott: UK Technical Sales Engineer for more information, following a highly successful exhibit at POWTECH 2023 from German counterparts, “Our components and systems are all ATEX-certified, our in-house expert engineers offer regular servicing on all active protection systems and annual checks on passive products, such as isolation valves. Our Cheltenham UK base is happy to assist new and existing UK customers, across many applications.”

These are some of the leading product lines based on popularity and innovation:

▼ The IV8 Flameless Vent: Offers advanced venting of industrial dust explosions and is perfect for protecting process vessels. In the event of an explosion, the venting device opens and vents the explosion pressure and heat but mitigates flame propagation. Achieved via a stainless-steel explosion relief vent and flame arrester, encased in a carbon steel coated frame. With a built-in detection sensor, personnel are notified immediately upon the opening of the vent.

eSUPPRESSOR™: This high-rate discharge suppressor is a world’s

first SIL 2 rated suppressor. With its pioneering electromechanical operation, the trigger opens the flap-allowing suppressant to discharge into the protected volume. The key benefits to the eSUPPRESSOR™ are a monitored lock out tag out mechanism (LOTTO), and temperature compensated pressure monitoring of the suppressor allowing better system reliability.

▼ IsoDisc: Released during 2022, this passive isolation device provides inlet explosion isolation to protect vessels with combustible dust such as mills or fluid bed driers for example.

Atexon SD300-EX/SD-600: Spark detectors formulated to identify ignition sources including hot particles or burning embers in ducts, chutes or mechanical conveyers. The corresponding water spray helps mitigate a further fire/ explosion. The Atexon Gen 2 Spark Detection components and systems are FM approved and in the process of acquiring ATEX-certification for Zone 22.

New Oliver Hydrogen Transportation Valves are about time

Oliver Hydcovalves have announced the design and manufacture of three new valves for hydrogen transportation and refuelling. Using high performance polymer bearings and seals in partnership with DuPont™, valves have been qualification tested to 102,000 cycles of operation while maintaining a fugitive emissions leakage class of BH.

Another unique feature of the valves is their full-bore design. This avoids restrictive flow, which appears to be a common problem in many valves on the market. Nick Howard, Engineering Director at Oliver Hydcovalves stated, “By maximising the flow rate, it will deliver a more continuous and consistent flow of hydrogen medium. This will allow for hydrogen fuel to be dispensed and refilled onsite much more quickly, which will deliver dramatic time-saving benefits.”

As the world continues to move towards sustainable energy sources, hydrogen is emerging as the promising fuel option for vehicles and industrial transportation on land, sea, and air. The transporting and dispensing of hydrogen fuel in working environments such as fuel stations and onsite fuel storage facilities, require specialist valves that have been designed and engineered for continuous high cycle operative use and meet the requirements of ISO 19880-3.

When dispensing hydrogen fuel on-site, it generally requires a large area to be closed off while in progress, and can even involve a whole site closure, dependent on size of area. Therefore, the time it takes to dispense hydrogen fuel is crucial. Oliver’s full-bore valves deliver hydrogen much faster than other transportation valves that have a restrictive flow. This significantly reduces the downtime at a site, and in most cases,

can be halved – minimising disruption to the forecourt and business operations.

Hydrogen fuel is stored and transported using pressurised tanks. Therefore, it’s of paramount importance that valves can handle extreme pressures too. Since 1979, Oliver has been synonymous with valve safety and reliability, even relied upon by the world’s largest energy producers, suppliers, and end-users for its precision engineered solutions. As Oliver’s company mantra suggests ‘Reliability Under

Pressure,’ they’re well-positioned to provide the necessary assurances required.

This latest engineering achievement firmly places Oliver Hydcovalves at the forefront for hydrogen transportation valves. Built to the highest specifications using premium quality materials, and tested to the highest standards, it’s logical to see how Oliver’s claim to offer the best valve solution for hydrogen transportation and refuelling applications, certainly holds up.

Bore sizes include; 10mm, 14mm and 20mm. To learn more about hydrogen transportation and for guidance on hydrogen specifications, applications, qualifications and pricing, contact Oliver Hydcovalves on: +44 (0)1565 632636 or visit their website at: www.valves.co.uk

Oliver Twinsafe customise Valve for Gryphon FPSO

Oliver Twinsafe manufactures a 10” x 8”, 900 class valve as a customised solution for the Maersk Gryphon floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) that’s now owned by Total Energies and is operating 200 miles off the Aberdeen coast.

The vessel is connected to subsea well clusters at a water depth of 112 metres, and equipped with topside production facilities to separate gas, oil, water mixtures and compression of gas for export.

Offshore installations such as an FPSO, give critical consideration to the space and weight of valve design, so compact design is key. Twinsafe manufactured a valve to a Compact Standard Length (CSL), with face-to-face dimensions in accordance with ASME B16.10. The double block and bleed design allows the valve to be installed

within the same space as a single isolated ball valve, but with two isolates and a bleed valve positioned in between to maximise safety.

The first isolated ball valve is fitted with a Rotork spring pneumatic actuator that’s fitted with a limit switch for remote and local visual indication of the valve position, and a control panel containing the air filter regulator and solenoid valve.

The second isolated valve is fitted with a manual gearbox.

Look for the original green and white QUADRO mixing tips

Illegal copies can be dangerous AND costly. Knock-off products can be inferior, and misapplications can be dangerous to humans and animals. At a minimum, using unverified copies can lead to double work correcting misapplications, doubling the cost. Using original systems for dispensing 2-component materials from certified manufacturers ensures greater economy and dispensing safety for people and the environment. medmix’s strict quality controls, detailed know-how, and supporting consulting service are important for professionals.

Today, Mixpac mixing systems cover the entire industry of 2-component adhesives and sealants. Years of development

and co-operation with material manufacturers and their customers in the industrial and DIY sectors allows medmix to boast top of class reliability at optimum prices. Copies can never achieve medmix’s high level of reliability because they are not developed to be compatible with an entire system. Every misapplication due to cheap copies can lead to high repair and correction costs. Cheap also means no guarantees – all misapplication costs are borne by the customer.

Cheap copies can lead to cheap seals and bonds – these are accidents waiting to happen. medmix focuses on maximum safety for people, animals, and the environment.

medmix invests millions in the development of its products to ensure safe and economic use. Long-time investments in mixer system technology allow for economically viable 2-component adhesive/sealant systems. From the dispenser to the mixer, genuine Mixpac products provide a best-inclass total system for application of 2-component adhesives and sealants.

Buying cheap copies risks damage to users and the reputation of the entire industry. Accordingly, medmix invests heavily to protect and educate the market to successfully detect and deny risky, cheap copies.

Recently, medmix prosecuted distributors of a large shipment of illegal copies of the well-known Quadro™ brand mixers. These dangerous copies of agricultural sector mixers, used in hoof care, can cause great damage. Every misapplication results in unrecoverable money lost to the farmer.

Customers and users can trust that medmix Switzerland AG will continue to defend their rights, their health, and their economic safety.

ECO PHYSICS AG develops new three-channel chemiluminescence analyser (NO/NO2/NH3)

ECO PHYSICS AG offers innovative analytical solutions for measurement tasks in the fields of environment, health and process control. Using its vital expertise and technology to contribute towards environmental preservation, human health, and industrial innovation, ECO PHYSICS’ interdisciplinary research and development team work tirelessly to deliver the best customer orientated and tailor-made products and services for the industry. Founded in 1990 through a management buy-out, ECO PHYSICS stands strong today as an independent Swiss shareholder’s company with an active board of members who are committed to the

future growth and success of the company. We spoke to Dr. Grischa Peter Feuersänger, Head of Sales & Marketing who explained how the past 12 months have fared.

“We have received a positive recovery post pandemic. Many public projects were reopened which generated alot of opportunities for new references. The war in East Europe is a new tough challenge to overcome, especially for companies that rely almost completely on importing parts and exporting their finished products. However, the main challenge for all of us has particularly been the manufacturing costs, shipping routes and exchange rates.

Since 2022, we have used this time to expand our product portfolio and modernise our production line. New staff has been hired for production and R&D, and we have rearranged

the supply chain due to the rise in production costs. We have adapted our yearly forecast to cater to this, we know it will be hard, but optimisation is our current goal.”

Knowing there is no quick fix to economic changes, ECO PHYSICS is determined to continue innovating and has developed a new three-channel analyser based on chemiluminescence. As an upgrade from the The nCLD AL2, The nCLDAL3/8555 CY analyser is the next generation in high precision nitrogen oxide measurement. Unique in speed and reliability, the nCLDAL3/8555 CY is modular designed and capable of simultaneously NO, NO2, NOX, NH3 and NOXAmines. The new and intuitive graphical user interface also individually displays and connects to other instruments’ data. Overall stability and reliability are lifted to a new level. The optional electro-mechanical bypass system balances out even the fastest of pressure variations occurring in the sample flow. Furthermore, the analyser is adaptable to numerous non-standardised applications and the calibration of the unit runs quickly and automatically with all necessary data available anywhere at any time. It’s user friendly, compact, modular, and intelligent hosting its own CPU whilst enabling interaction with other CPUs by BUS-communication.

Additionally, ECO PHYSICS has also been developing upgrade kits for all its existing products to help counteract some of the problematic complications the supply chain has caused. “We have used this chance for some substantial upgrades in hardware, software and gas flow controls,” added Dr. Grischa Peter Feuersänger. Going forward, ECO PHYSICS is excited to continue working on optimising production workflow whilst simultaneously expanding its current portfolio and developing new technologies.

ATS: The heating, sensing and controlling suite of tomorrow

In the past, thermal systems always had trade-offs that often made the ‘ideal’ system out of reach. Whether budgetary concerns limit the number of temperature sensors, tight space requirements restrict the number of zones or the technology hampers how precise the heating systems are, these systems are often curated with compromise. Here, Sean Wilkinson, Product Manager at industrial technology company Watlow (pictured), explores how adaptive thermal systems (ATS) are designed to provide companies with the tools to build the heating systems they need, without forcing compromise.

resistance (TCR) materials respond to temperature changes with a change in resistance. By measuring that change, it’s possible to determine the temperature at that location. Building heaters out of high TCR materials adds a sensing capability, adding measurements to places where they were previously impossible due to space or cost requirements.

What drives the cost of a circuit board? And how do those factors in turn impact the sustainability?

Whether your role is managerial, commercial or technical there is a good chance that you have an interest in ensuring that the printed circuit boards you are designing, purchasing and/or assembling are as efficient as they can be in terms of achieving the lowest total cost, sustainably, without compromising functionality or reliability of the end product.

A great heating system needs a great controller. Of course, better controllers are only worth the investment if it’s possible to achieve better control throughout the system. Improved control requires more sensors, which can be a costly proposition.

But there are ways to get around high costs. High temperature co-efficient

Likewise, integrated thermocouple heater (TCH) junction temperature control turns heater power leads into a thermocouple junction. The voltage at this junction varies consistently with the surrounding temperature, so measuring it provides a spot measurement of the temperature at that location. Together, these two technologies offer expanded sensing options without additional wiring or extra controllers.

https://www.watlow.com

The majority of the cost – 80-90% is built into the product in the early stages of the design phase – before either the PCB supplier of EMS company has sight of the design. We have also found that many of the cost drivers directly impact all aspects in producing and delivering a more sustainable product. In our Sustainability Impact meter you can see the effects for each cost driver.

NCAB has divided the cost drivers into two categories, the ‘hard

costs’ and the ‘soft costs.’ The hard costs drivers are covering aspects that relate to the physical printed circuit board itself. Examples being copper weights and build complexity. In these cases the impacts on sustainability are more tangible. The soft cost drivers are those elements tear bless considered can eat to delays in engineering, lost time and mis-specified demands that only serve to either achieve the desired quality or longterm reliability – this is not sustainable PCB production in our eyes. Many times these factors are a little less quantifiable, but can certainly have just as much of an impact on cost and sustainability.

Taking a systems approach to solve electrification challenges

Industrial organisations can push decarbonisation forward by shifting process heater systems from fossil fuel-burning to electric. This kind of electrification needs to be done with a systems approach in mind – by considering the entire thermal loop. Of all the components needed to switch to electric, control panels are one of the most important. For large-scale applications, control panels need to be designed to maximise reliability, accessibility and safety. In this article, Jeff McClanahan, business segment leader at industrial technology company Watlow (pictured), explores why systems approach thinking is key in the manufacturing of components for electrification.

The point of a systems approach is to take a step back, seeing how different design considerations impact on the system and process might have as a whole, rather than focusing on the functioning or replacement of a single part. A systems approach also has an impact on the business aspects of an industrial process, as it encourages engineers to consider the total cost of ownership when comparing different options.

Meeting challenges at scale

The question of electrification is less of an if or a when, and instead how. Globally, companies are prioritising the reduction of their carbon footprint. There is a huge push across different industries to ‘go electric’ as part of a larger program of decarbonisation. But the details for doing so can be elusive. It’s not as easy as swapping out gas-fired heaters for electric heaters, for example, without also considering the size, location and connectivity of the control panel that will regulate those electric heaters. These considerations will, in turn, have a bearing on how and when the system needs to be maintained, how long downtime lasts and what the prospects are for future expansion.

Taking a systems approach to process heating was a foundational consideration behind the design of Watlow’s L and XL WATCONNECT control panels. Here, we take a deeper look at what went into that design as a way of illustrating the power of this kind of thinking.

A systems approach means finding not just one or two solutions to meet a challenge, but finding as many solutions as possible to optimize a given outcome. Take reliability, for example. What are all of the different ways a system can be optimized to ensure near 100% uptime? One way this was done in the design of the WATCONNECT panels was by looking at the thermal design of the system. All systems generate some heat, and excess heat is the

nemesis of electronics. Therefore, optimising the system to keep heat under control is critical.

Watlow’s design looked at adding to the insulation of the system, reducing power where possible, and improving the airflow throughout the system. Airflow itself was improved by using highreliability EC inlet and outlet fans with advanced monitoring, which provide up to twice the airflow compared to industry standard fans. Therefore, by better controlling waste heat within the panel, Watlow can extend the life of the electronic components and significantly increase reliability.

WATCONNECT panels are also designed with solid copper internal power interconnect for less expansion and contraction. This is especially important at high-resistance junctions, because the more this component heats up when made from an alternative to copper, the higher the risk of failure.

Lastly, while the panels are categorised as large, they use only 50% of the space that competitive panels require. This can make it easier to install the panels when space is limited. Or, if replacing current equipment, the savings potentially frees up space for other critical equipment, allowing for future expansion.
