Babcock Wanson Completes turnkey steam project for UK's largest centralised kitchen

Industrial process heating equipment and solutions specialist Babcock Wanson has completed a turnkey project to supply steam, via its BWD30 fire tube boiler, to cookers at IRC Cucina's new Trafford Park centralised kitchen.

Babcock Wanson was brought in to the project at an early stage, as IRC Cucina's General Manager, Robert Lishman explains: "This was a relocation of a complex dual site operation into a larger single site operation, post build. Consequently, as we were building the kitchen, our plans changed. With each change Babcock Wanson risk assessed, consulted with the various parties, and adapted to our plans. They are our go to supplier. In fact, they are more than a supplier as their specialist knowledge and expertise extends beyond just the equipment and into the legal implications of the processes involved."

Babcock Wanson has focused on the sous vide and sauce cooking equipment, which requires large volumes of steam

supplied instantaneously. Babcock Wanson's BWD30 fire tube steam boiler, with its three pass design, readily meets this need, providing high quality dry steam with availability higher than 97%. It features the unique and innovative NAVinergy remote monitoring system which integrates all the components necessary for the supervision and management of the boiler room.

For IRC Cucina, BW7DAYS has proven both cost-effective and reassuring. Furthermore, Babcock Wanson also undertook the full mechanical installation works, completing initial studies, detailed engineering, design appraisal, installation and commissioning.

Quality Over Quantity

One hour 49 minutes is the optimal amount of time for a decent catch up with friends

Balancing work, self-care, family and a social life can be a constant juggling act but research reveals one hour and 49 minutes is the perfect amount of time to spend catching up with friends in order to have the most positive impact on our wellbeing.

According to plant-based Califia Farms Cold Brew Coffee who commissioned the research, summer is the perfect time to get together with friends. Choosing to connect with friends over a coffee, allows for richer conversation, greater connection and don’t forget the cost benefits.

Califia Farms has partnered with singer Rachel Stevens and her best friend to show how a refreshing Cold Brew coffee can fuel a nourishing heart to heart this summer.

Rachel Stevens comments, " I've fallen in love with a smooth Cold Brew coffee over ice! Even when I don't have a lot of time, I cherish mine and Nikki’s ritual of coffee and conversation at home.”

Sophie Webb, Marketing Lead for UK & Ireland at Califia Farms says

"It's great to see that Brits view their regular coffee catch ups as important, with 51% considering it a top bonding experience to have with friends. Our irresistibly tasty plant-based Cold Brew coffee makes this even more convenient."

Califia Farms Cold Brew coffee continues the brand's plant-based mission, championing a future where plants replace dairy, without compromising on taste. Made with the highest quality ingredients from whole food plant sources, Califia Farms offers healthy and great tasting plantbased alternatives.

SRSLY Low Carb flys the flag for healthier eating

Lockdown was a sea-change moment when many households reviewed their eating habits whilst scrutinizing ingredient decks for lazy sugar and highly-processed carbs.

Ketogenic as the world’s most frequently googled eating regimes was always going to be a major beneficiary when it came to keyboard warriors seeking out better balanced diets, which explains why SRSLY Low Carb, a leading B2C player within low carb breads, rolls wraps, pizzas, jams, & now ready meals is now preparing to broaden its horizons into mainstream retail.

According to SRSLY Low Carb founder, Andy Welch, ‘Over the last 9 months alone we’ve refreshed our brand identity, initiated innovation to extend our range beyond our breads, raisied our profile within the wider foodie community, enhanced our export capacity and prepared for an allimportant investment push.’

SRSLY Low Carb is so much more than an entrepreneurial whim because it was born from personal circumstance. Pre-SRSLY, Andy Welch was a corporate bod flying hither and thither, leading International change projects for an eclectic mix of FTSE 250 clients. In an all-too-familiar tale of hard-working individuals pushing themselves too hard, Andy collapsed one afternoon on a trip home from Poland out of pure exhaustion; an out-of-theblue setback that sparked a period of debilitating depression.

Determined to rebuild his mental wellness, Andy made exercise his priority and signed up for an Iron Man. In order to cope Andy embraced a low crab/keto lifestyle, which quickly started transforming his life for the better. Yet Andy struggled to quell his ‘bready urges.’ Unable to find a suitable soft, fluffy low carb loaf, Andy created his own. 2-3 loaves a week grew to 400, 6,000 and soon afterwards 12,000 a week. In no time SRSLY become Amazon’s undisputed largest provider of low carb/high protein bread.

In July the NHS awarded SRSLY a central contract

to supply. Fittingly, 80% of SRSLY’s online following comes from individuals and families looking to lose weight whilst an over-arching 50% are food lovers seeking to stall; even reverse type 2 diabetes.

‘I still dream of a day,’ concludes Andy, ‘when the well-meaning but limited free-from aisle is gone and we have genuine healthy options down every aisle (avoiding gluten, meat, side-stepping seed oils, excessive sugar, carbs…’

The 2023 London Wine Fair reflected renewed energy of UK wine industry

The 2023 London Wine Fair, which took place in May, was a resounding success. Following the last-minute cancellation in 2020 and a digital version in 2021 due to the pandemic, followed by last year’s “bounce back” event coming as the world emerged from Lockdown, 2023 was the industry’s opportunity to get back to normal. Total (net) visitors were 10,091, a 14% increase on the previous year; 34% of visitors were from the on-trade.

The 2023 exhibitor numbers were up 30% on last year, at 417. These included a cross section of the top UK agents, a raft of generic bodies, from market leaders, France, Italy and Spain, as well as those off the beaten track: Armenia, Georgia, Greece, Moldova and Ukraine. Brands too were out in force, such at Babylonstoren, Canned Wine Company, Cramele Recas and Trapiche, to name just a few.

The high-quality visitor audience was noteworthy; those with direct buying power increased to 43% from 36% in 2022, and the most represented job title was “director” at just under 10% of the audience. The investment made to attract the on-trade, following a turbulent three years in this sector, paid off, with “sommelier” being the second highest recorded job title.

Head of Fair, Hannah Tovey commented: “Anyone who came to the show this year will have seen a wine industry firing on all cylinders. After the many

challenges of last year, there was a tangible buzz to the event, with meaningful business being done alongside the never more crucial networking and knowledge sharing, which is so pertinent to London Wine Fair. Sustainability was placed at the heart of the show this year, with ground-breaking initiatives such as the London Wine Fair 2023 Bottle Reuse Initiative spearheaded by Porto Protocol and Sustainable Wine

Sustainability.

The key theme for the show – was evident in the number of sessions spanning Masterclasses, educational seminars, Industry Briefings and panel discussions, and this was reflected in the raft of exhibitors who showcased new launches and credentials in this area. The show reported that “sustainability” was the third most searched for category on the Fair’s sophisticated online exhibitor directory, after “country” and “region”, indicating that sustainable products were very high on the agenda for visitors.

Solutions, alongside game-changing developments and discussions from panellists and audiences alike on topics ranging from bottle weight to organics, which will influence our industry on a global scale over the coming months and years.”

Andrew Shaw, Head of Trading – Drinks, Marks & Spencer, added: “Fantastic to see such energised and exciting product categories across the event. From No & Low to emerging wine territories. Such positivity, creativity and optimism!  Also, excellent to have sustainability running as such a core theme throughout

the event, creating new collaborations and a renewed desire for change and improvement.”

The 2023 event will take place from 20th to 22nd May, at Olympia and organisers have already reported the highest number of re-bookings made on-site during a show, since at least 2017. The U.K.’s leading agents, including Hatch Mansfield, Enotria&Coe, ABS Wine

Agencies, Felix Solis, Friarwood Fine Wines, EWGA, Ellis Wines and Richmond Wine Agencies have already confirmed participation. Key players will be returning to the show for the first time in several years. To date, Mentzendorff have confirmed, with other big names expected to commit over the coming days and weeks.

Why you have to throw out The Rulebook to drink non-alcoholic wine

Dealcoholized wine is not a new phenomenon. At the beginning of the 20th century, German drink makers experimented with dealcoholized wine to serve to workers and during the American Prohibition period in the 1920’s, there was a societal shift towards non-alcoholic wine for better health and increased work productivity.

During the last few years however, non-alcoholic wine has gained more traction with consumers and wine critics alike. The rise in health and wellbeing has brought subsequent demand for healthier drinks and with it, increased credibility amongst wine critics.

Richard Bampfield, MW has tailored his approach to wine tasting and reviewing after tasting our range, “I have seldom felt more ridiculous than when I found myself spitting out an alcohol-free wine.

Marcato Direct

For over 10 years, Marcato Direct has been importing authentic wines from small, family vineyards throughout Italy, supplying a diverse and original portfolio across the UK.

From sun-drenched vineyards on the southern tip of Sicily, to the rolling Tuscan hills and mountains of Alto-Adige on the Austrian border, we work closely with winemakers who are passionate about their craft to produce wines of outstanding quality, often winning awards on a global scale.

Every wine in our range is carefully sourced as an excellent example of its appellation, each with an exciting story to tell that demonstrates the diversity and rich history of Italian viticulture.

Wrong on every level. Partly because wine tasters normally only spit to avoid drinking too much alcohol - which is obviously not a concern if the wine contains no alcohol in the first place,” says Bampfield. “And partly because tasting and spitting is no way to appreciate a good alcohol-free wine such as Thomson & Scott Noughty.”

Unlike alcoholic wine-tasting that requires a spittoon to enable the taster to avoid getting drunk, nonalcoholic wine in this instance can be enjoyed without constraint. "The whole point is that you should enjoy them with abandon - drink with joy, gusto… and thirst,” Bampfield explains. “Alcohol-free wines like Noughty are for drinking and relishing, not for tasting and spitting.”

For more information, see below. www.noughtyaf.com

Our winemakers work in harmony with nature, with great care and respect for their land that has been passed down through generations. Many cultivate their vines in an organic and biodynamic way, showing the unique characteristics of their terroir.

Marcato Direct offers flexible buying options that allow customers to order as much or as little as needed, depending on the

time of year or size of business, with fast, efficient deliveries within 2 days.

Bring the taste of Italy to your customers, share the passions of the winemaker and enjoy authentic wines of origin with Marcato Direct.

Bolle raises the bar for low alcohol sparkling wine

Award-winning Bolle returned to its London Wine Festival (June 23) stomping ground to celebrate the latest iteration of its incredible low alcohol, sparkling wine offer. Bolle, to the uninitiated represents a revolutionary sparkling non-alcohol wine produced with game-changing, Zero GradiTM technology devised by Roberto Vanin, scientist, ardent oenologist, Chief Research & Development officer.

Roberto spied an opening to re-energise an underperforming low & no alcohol wine category that had hitherto struggled to enjoy the same levels of mass market approval and plaudit acceptance enjoyed by its low & no alcohol beer peers despite being the single largest drinks category within a vibrant, 'mindful drinking' movement.

Sandridge Barton celebrates wins

Situated in the South Hams, Sandridge Barton may appear to be a new face on the UK wine scene, but previously its Devon-based vineyards and winery have been growing grapes and making wine since 1981 as Sharpham Wine.

Set in the Dart Valley, Sandridge Barton's unique marriage of climate, soil and grape varieties, combined with their meticulous care, experience and winemaking skills, make them one of the foremost wine producers in the UK.

Sandridge Barton is celebrating numerous achievements in 2023. Most recently, their Pinot Noir 2020 won three trophies at the WineGB Awards for Best Red Wine and Best Still Wine, as well as Best Regional Wine. In addition, the winery received seven medals, including a gold medal, four silvers and two bronze medals. The winery has also launched its first collection under the ‘Sandridge Barton’ label with the first release ‘Blanc de Noirs’ 2020 receiving a Master Medal at the Global Sparkling Masters 2023. Making it one of the best sparkling wines in the world.

In May, three of Sandridge Barton’s wines were recognised in the London Wine Fair Wine Writers’ Edit including the Sharpham Dart Valley Reserve 2022 and Sharpham Pinot Gris ‘Wild Ferment’ 2021.

According to Bolle founder Roberto, 'From the outset I wanted to create a unique non-alcohol wine that meet the increasing consumer demand in terms of taste and sparkling wine aspirations; but coupled seamlessly with great food minus the alcohol, unwelcome calories and overt sugary sweetness that has historically held this intriguing product category back. To my mind Bolle offers historically inaccessible levels of sophistication, coupled with smooth, well-balanced acidity and a crisp yet refreshing taste.'

Bolle offers the necessary depth of character and enlightened flavour notes to spark a wider appreciation of low alcohol sparkling wine.

Fairtrade wine

Fairtrade’s involvement in the wine sector stems from concern around the labour conditions of workers on large wine estates, as well as the difficulty faced by smallholder wine growers in countries like South Africa to earn a decent living.

When you choose Fairtrade wine, you help to ensure that the workers and small-scale growers behind the wine your customers order can get a fair deal. Fairtrade Standards are designed to improve employment conditions and protect the rights of wine farmers and workers, enabling them to gain more control within supply chains and increase their incomes.

Vineyards that are Fairtrade certified – some of which are worker-owned – receive at least the Fairtrade Minimum Price when they sell their wine grapes to a trader on Fairtrade terms. This protects against sudden price shifts and enables producers to plan beyond the next planting and harvesting cycle. The Fairtrade Premium – extra funds paid on top of the sales price – enables small-scale farmers and vineyard workers to invest in social, economic, and environmental improvements.

You can now enjoy award-winning Fairtrade wines crafted by over 50 growers and vineyards across Argentina, Chile, and South Africa.

More and more people are becoming sensitive to the safeguarding of our planet. We have also inserted in our collection certified Vegan wine such as our Prosecco DOC and our Prosecco Rosé. They are animal friendly wines as no animal based product is used. We wish to celebrate our Mother Earth with the liveliness and freshness of a high quality Prosecco with a breezy mindset that it has been made with the utmost care for the environment. The meaning behind the name is just that. The superior quality of Prosecco grown in an eco friendly territory with the forward thinking approach of enjoying the present while preserving the future with the awareness that man and nature can gracefully harmonise with each other.

FOOD & BEVERAGE MANUFACTURER COMPANY OF THE MONTH

Always at the cutting

edge of print sustainability

Harkwell has been a market-leading digital label printing technology company for the last 18 years. This proud family-run company uses HP Indigo Presses, ABG and Karlville-finishing lines to supply high-end labelling and flexible packaging designs. Revered as experts in label and pouch solutions, Harkwell transforms art designs into eye-catching labels and flexible packaging, from its purpose-built building in Poole, Dorset.

The in-house team offer a fully customised consultation service, from enquiries about sustainable labelling to the merits of embellishments. So, if you’re looking for glass bottle labels for a new West Country cider or compostable coffee pouches, from food and beverages to cosmetics, Harkwell have a team of experts, waiting for your call.

We featured Harkwell back in our March issue of Food & Drink Matters as our Company of the Month and we’re excited to see the changes over the last few months. We caught up new Managing Director, Andrew Mansfield to get the latest lowdown on this Digital Printing Powerhouse,

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to select Harkwell as our Digital Printing Technology Company of the Year.

“We’re over-the-moon to be nominated by FlexoTech International Print & Innovation Awards 2023 in the prestigious Digital Labels & Packaging category. This is a great honour for us- we are a hardworking SME and strive to be heard in the marketplace. Being nominated as a finalist, through to being selected as a Food & Drink Company of the Year gives our employees something to be proud about. It’s all about the team in my book.

We are hoping to persuade companies to switch to pouches: it is the ultimate in lightweight packaging. The compact design of pouches means more can be stored on supermarket shelves, increasing profit margins, whist saving on transportation and shipping costs.”

Choosing lightweight, biodegradable pouches is indeed fast becoming the industry’s most sustainable choice. Not only does it take less water and energy to make pouches, compared to say glass jars, but the lightweight packaging fit together easily, allowing for greater transportation bulks -saving on costs and carbon footprint. End-users will love these pouches

too- the high barrier films prolong shelf life by keeping light and oxygen out, with easy zip lock and spouted pouch sealable functions. The pouches are all destructiontested- meaning you don’t need to worry about spillage or contamination in transit, offering quality assurance.

Throughout the consultation period, customers can learn about added embellishments including handy QR codes, barcodes and sequential/random numbering.

“We find that buyers, NPD and branding teams are still confused by the unlimited marketing potential of digital printing.

Little and often is our moto: why order sixmonths of stock when we can supply you monthly? We want end-users to rethink the ‘true cost’ of what they are buying.

Much of the consultation period is about education- helping customers understand the whole range at their disposal and from time to time, helping ‘tweak’ and ‘elevate’ artwork to a whole new level. Designers are focused on the creative process: marketing a product with flair, imagination and eye-catching designs- it’s where art meets business. Sometimes these designs look stunning on the screen but don’t quite translate to the finished printed product.

We send press-proofs through to the

customer in a range of styles, using our “WebCenter”- a cloud-based workplace management software system for artwork sign-off and storage. This enables them to see what the finished product would

look like before committing to the final design. Having experience in the industry for 18 years has allowed us to perfect our knowledge and high-quality end results in tandem,” added Andrew.

Sustainability is a huge topic in the industry and Harkwell are at the forefront of this important mindset, offering compostable labelling and packaging through to lightweight pouches and innovative recyclable sugar cane materials. With more companies looking to invest in the most sustainable label and packaging solutions on the market, Harkwell can offer UKbased products, mitigating costs and carbon footprint. Harkwell take sustainability very seriously and its purpose-built thermallyinsulated building is powered by 120 solar panels, with recirculated heat from the HP Indigo Press heating the entire building during the colder, winter months. With a customised recycling programme, all company waste is 100% recycled –giving Harkwell a Zero to Landfill declaration.

“We pride ourselves on working in a sustainable fashion, to provide innovative, high-end sustainable solutions for our customers.

We are currently working on a new ecorange, likely to be on the market in the next few months- we are always looking to propel the green agenda forward,” explained Andrew.

During the COVID-pandemic, many businesses switched to using Zoom/ Microsoft Teams to connect with customers and businesses remotely around the UK and further afield. Harkwell was no exception to this, adapting to this digital framework quickly during Lockdown. A recent re-structuring has allowed the benefit of a new state-of-the-art boardroom for internal meetings and with the addition of a large TV, Teams meetings with customers around the country, have indeed become second-nature.

“From pouches, to labelling, we are at the forefront of sustainable digital label printing technology. Not only are we focused on looking after our customers with high-end printing solutions, we are also investing in our employees. We encourage and nurture all our young apprentices- they are the future lifeblood of the company.

When I moved into this role, I wanted to motivate the younger staff membershanding over the decision-making in their departments to them, whilst patiently offering advice and guidance. Alongside Jon Cooke: Operations Director, I am encouraging the younger members to take up training with the aid of the BPIF: the UK’s leading trade association for print. We want our staff to be motivated and best in class,” concluded Andrew.

With over 300 exhibitors showcasing more than 2,650 brands and representing the full spectrum of the industry, companies will be keen to show visitors how they can improve their businesses with the latest cuttingedge technologies. This can help businesses stay ahead with the latest trends, improve efficiency, and make better use of resources. Here are some just some of the hundreds of the exhibitors taking part in the show: Reiser, ULMA, Omori UK, Ishida Europe, PFM, Somic, SMC, and Beckhoff.

No matter what your level of interest or expertise in the processing and packaging industry, the upcoming PPMA Show is sure to have something for you.

19/6 - Three-way portal

With their tasty biscuits being sold in over more than 41 countries worldwide, this customer needed to update their facility in order to meet the ever-increasing demand for their sweets. In this specific case, the customer had two lines coming together just before having to cross a critical logistic pathway, after which they each had to split again in order to get to their separate packaging machines.

Watch video: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=KRWJkJ-qi24

With an existing facility that’s already running various other projects, it’s always tough to find the most efficient way to increase the number of lines without sacrificing safety and accessibility. Especially so if the product being transported is unstable and fragile, like these biscuits.

As the customer has already had many positive experiences with AmbaFlex products they trusted them to come up with the best possible solution and they found it in the patented Portal ONE. This solution solves two problems in one go: first, it creates a portal function which will keep the critical logistics paths open and safe. Second, using only one belt along the whole path, it cuts the number of needed transfers by half. Removing those transfers that would otherwise be suspended up in the air and hard to reach, ensuring a safe and stable journey of the products.

This year’s three-day exhibition will offer a chance to gain new insights and knowledge that could benefit visitors’ businesses. Here’s just a flavour of what they can expect:

• Live demonstrations of new machinery in action.

• Video presentations by influential industry experts.

• Networking opportunities.

• Keeping an eye on the competition.

• Benchmark best practice.

• Building new relationships.

• A full programme of seminars.

• Inspiration and innovative.

• Experience the complete production line event in action from start to finish.

• Free to attend.

For more information and to register for a free ticket to this year’s show, visit:

www.ppmashow.co.uk/visit

Taking the portal one solution and customizing it to our customer’s needs resulted in a one of a kind three-way portal solution, made to solve the customer’s challenges in the most efficient way possible. After it elevates the two streams of biscuits with only a single dual-lane spiral, the two streams separate at the upper end where they each continue to their own spiral to transport them down again and deliver them to their respective packaging machine.

Creating one three-way portal instead of a traditional portal system for each line cuts down on total costs and floor space used. The end result, a happy customer with an efficient and safe upgrade to their facility.

One more proof of AmbaFlex’s leading position in Spiral Conveyor Solutions!

From frozen to table in under 10 minutes

A taste of Italy: introducing Scrocchiarella

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to award Fleming Howden as our par-baked bread frozen product Company of the Year.

Fleming Howden have been the talk of food trade shows around the country this year from ScotHot at the SEC to IFE International Food & Drink at the ExCeL, with their delicious Scrocchiarella product.

Pronounced Skrokkia-rella- Scrocchiarella derives from the Italian scrocchiare - used to describe something that's ‘very crispy.’

In Italy, Tonda Romana, also referred to as Scrocchiarella is a mouth-watering, paper-thin crunchy pizza, that just melts when eaten.

Usually flat and round, it is a distinctive cracker-like crusty texture.

Scrocchiarella is the ultimate snack gourmet experience- delivering easy, baked genius, with minimal preparation. It’s ready to eat in under 10 minutes, perfect for serving genuine, Italian home-made pizzas, sandwiches, flat breads, and many more items to loyal customers.

Premium-quality sourdough is the secret, winning ingredient, giving that purely authentic Italian aftertaste. The product is vegan-friendly and lovingly made using only the finest,

traditional artisan materials and methods.

This unique bread product: Scrocchiarella is now exclusively available from Fleming Howden and its 18 partners across England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and Jersey and can transform eateries with its pizza, bread, crisp bread and even pastry recipes. It is perfect and quickly adaptable for usage in pubs, restaurants, pastry shops, ice-cream shops and even street snack outlets, as a sweet or savoury option. Imaginative chefs and food staff can use their imagination and transform Scrocchiarella into a starter, main course, dessert or takeaway snackthe sky’s the limit! The handy sandwich version is even pre-sliced, for added conveniencewhat's more there’s no need to defrost before use- Scrocchiarella amazingly only takes under 10 minutes from frozen to service.

Here at Food & Drink Matters, we only first featured Scrocchiarella a few months ago and in that time, the product has grown exponentially. Now with 18 partners across the UK, Ireland and Jersey, everyone across the British Isles can have a little slice of Italy.

The best thing about Scrocchiarella is its versatility- whatever the time of year, it can be enjoyed with seasonal fruit and vegetables, as cosy autumnal lunch or light, summer snack. Artisan foodies can enjoy roasted squash, sweet potato fillings, topped with grated parmesan and black pepper or summer fruits, freshly picked strawberries, blackberries and blueberries with crème fraiche or whipped cream. Pizza lovers can enjoy a whole host of toppings, using seasonal mushrooms, spinach, mozzarella cheese, Parma ham and spicy

chorizo, or delicious vegan cheese. The crispy texture giving the truly aromatic, authentic Italian taste.

Scrocchiarella: this exclusive Italian-baked bread product hails from Edinburgh importers Fleming Howden. The background story is fortuitous, as General Manager Carl Vitty recounts,

“We borrowed a pizza oven and exhibited Scrocchiarella for the first time at The European Pizza & Pasta Show at Olympia London in October 2021. With food, it’s essential the show visitors taste it. It’s not enough to see filter-perfect internet images- the proof is in the pudding- or bread in this case.

You start enjoying first with your eyes and the lucky foodies who later tasted it declared it, ‘best in show.’ Encouraged by such a positive response, we went on to sign three wholesalers by March 2022 and we have just signed our 18th. Dreams really do come true.”

Fleming Howden sell Scrocchiarella to wholesalers, who then in turn distribute further to restaurants, cafes, street food trucks, pizzerias and cafes around the British Isles. Available in pizza and sandwich form, it’s been selling like hot cakes.

The winning sourdough ingredient is lovingly made over a 30-hour period, traditionally hand stretched, giving the authentic flavour. It is available in three delicious varieties: Classica, Rustica and Riso Venere, using a range of golden soft wheat, brown rye barley and black wholegrain rice respectively.

PAR-BAKED BREAD FROZEN PRODUCTS COMPANY OF THE YEAR

At Food & Drink Matters, we admire the traditional Italian bakery process, combined with the speedy 10-minute freezer-ready technique. What’s more, as a certified veganproduct, food outlets can offer a wide range of vegan pizzas, sandwiches, or snacks throughout the year.

Veganism is no longer a trend in the UK- it has now bypassed Veganuary, with an increase of 445,428 people over the last year (source: Only The Brave.) This means it is imperative that food outlets offer a wider choice of vegan menus and Scrocchiarella is perfect because it is so versatile- from chargrilled vegetables, baked lentils, to stir-fried tofu: there is no limit to vegan toppings available.

As General Manager Carl says the, “only limit is your gastronomic imagination.”

Furthermore, the ‘riso venere’ base has the lowest gluten content, for those with gluten intolerances and sourdough bread is now widely revered as being highly digestible due to its trademark ‘light’ content.

Scrocchiarella really does have it all: Italian authentic crunchiness, versatile, vegan-certified, low in gluten and a taste sensation as Carl adds, “The aroma reminds me of the same sensation of when I go to a great Italian restaurant.”

We all know how powerful the sense of smell can be and with Scrocchiarella, it conjures up a whole world of traditional, artisan Italian bakery but without having to spend lots of time preparing or defrosting the dough. The light, crunchy sourdough bread needs less than 10 minutes in the oven, leaving more time for pastry and head chefs to spend more time creating new signature dishes in the kitchen.

Scrocchiarella can be baked in all standard industrial products such as Convectional ovens, Rationales, Merrychefs and Pizza Ovens.

Find out how Scrocchiarella can be an indispensable addition to your menu today.

Carl Vitty and his expert team will be showcasing Scrocchiarella at the following trade shows in 2023 & 2024:

Casual Dining: 27-28 September 2023 ExCeL London. www.casualdiningshow.co.uk

Are you ready to explore the very best of what the UK food and drink sector has to offer?

To register your interest to visit Food & Drink Expo 2024, click here.

Looking back at Food & Drink Expo

Food & Drink Expo was back with a bang for 2023! The show was packed with a variety of buyers across the sector, exciting new product launches and insightful sessions to explore the very best of the UK hospitality and grocery sector.

The subject of plant-based food was high on the agenda at the show this year. The question of whether meat has a future was posed by an expert panel including The Vegan Society’s Claire Ogley, who discussed where the category might be five years from now. Visitors also got to hear from the Plant Based Food Alliance who discussed if more needs to be done to push consumers towards meat-free or flexitarian lifestyles, and the challenges of this in light of a recent report which found that half of UK adults who reduced their meat intake are finding that a plant-based diet is actually more expensive.

Throughout the three-day spectacular, talk from exhibitors fixated on reports of visitors with unrivalled purchasing power and authority out

in force on the show floor. With this in mind, many were quick to commit themselves to next year’s shows, and even quicker to praise the high quality of visitors to their stand as a key reason for this.

Susanne Casey, COO, Velo Coffee Roasters – “We’ve been trialling a new product at the show and it’s been really great for us. We’ve had a huge range of people come to our stand from different sectors - from innovation to sales to buying who have all been willing to try the product. We’ve made some leads with innovation teams which has been great – we’d definitely come back again!”

Andrew Reed, Managing Director – Wine & Exhibitions, William Reed, added: “The UK Food & Drink Shows are simply unique in their ability to unite the very best our country has to offer across multiple sectors, while attracting serious visitors with spending power. It’s been fantastic to witness exhibitors, visitors, and speakers alike return in their droves to the NEC.

Certainly Wood’s range of natural firelighters

AGold Winner at the show, Certainly Wood’s range of natural firelighters are supplied in a range of pack sizes, but most noticeably they now have two different products – Their Flamers natural firelighters provide a natural wood wool alternative to the standard paraffin firelighters that have dominated the market, but it’s their new KindleFlamer that provides the most interest as this is a much longer and allows a log fire to be lit without kindling wood.

They have even managed to

patent this product and it certainly is something very different in the market place so offers retailers an opportunity to stock a unique product which has, as they say, the potential to provide a real revolution to fire lighting, and with being great for barbecues too, it’s an all year round stock item.

The retailer potentially, no longer needs to buy large pallets of kindling wood which is relatively low value. They can now replace with a higher value product that takes up minimal space – therefore more profit per square metre. For the consumer, its also a real winner. They no longer need to buy kindling and store it in the garage or by the fire. Its just a log basket and a KindleFlamer bucket full of product – Easy, clean and tidy.

In a period of great turbulence, the sense of togetherness and of business as usual has been palpable. With a wealth of exhibitors already signed up for the shows next year, the future looks bright for our exciting, resilient, and everevolving industry.”

New for 2024!

They will bring an element of this into the spotlight as the Restaurant zone at Food & Drink Expo. Food & Drink Expo will be back again next year from 29 April - 01 May 2024 at the NEC, Birmingham. Both their hugely successful Healthy & Natural and Plant-based areas are returning in 2024, dedicated to sourcing healthy and vegan/plant-based products!

Bohemia Wine Angus Alchemy

Scotland’s newest distillery, Angus Alchemy is creating waves, bringing Moonshine back to its native shores.

Often associated with America's prohibition era, Moonshine was originally distilled by newly emigrated Scotch whisky and Irish poutine makers. The team at Angus Alchemy, honour this tradition by handcrafting spirits infused with natural, locallysourced ingredients.

Self-styled Distillers of Divergence, Angus Alchemy have already won plaudits including scooping a bronze medal at this year’s IWSC as well as a Great Taste Award. A flying start for this start up distillery which has been created just beside Carnoustie, Scotland’s home of golf.

The core range includes Clootie Moonshine, with notes of sultana, golden syrup and gentle spice such as clove and cinnamon. Cranachan Moonshine is pale pink in colour and is distilled with local raspberries, honey,

whisky, with notes of toasted oats.

There is also a trio of distinctive gins, including Prickly Gin, Prickly Gin Navy Strength and Prickled Pink Gin, each brimming with unique botanical infusions including notoriously prickly Scottish botanicals such as thistle and nettle as well as heather.

If you’re passing north of Dundee, the Moonshine Village style distillery itself is worth a visit, too.

Unlock the recipe to Digital Transformation success with Delaware!

We’d like to say Delaware is a master data baker, but that might stretch this analogy too far!

Like any recipe, practice makes perfect – and at Delaware we have had lots of practice, as the global / worldwide La Lorraine Bakery Group discovered. With 1000 daily sales orders across 50,000 order lines, in 26 languages, they had several challenges. Amongst them maintaining a costly, unstable custom commerce platform, no customer-centric information and engagement program and a lack of collaboration and communication between the sales & marketing organisations. A recipe for, if not disaster, not the best ‘bake’.

Adding Delaware to the mix provided them with centralised up-to-date product information accessible in one click, reducing admin work and customer service / sales calls.

Over the Moo puts a new bite-sized slant on the humble choc ice with sublime plantbased treats

Until now, plantbased ice cream had fallen a little short in terms of replicating dairy’s unique taste, mouthfeel and texture, but this Summer Over the Moo’s new bite-sized treats are setting out to change that.

Over the Moo tips its hat to the timeless choc ice, providing this English yesteryear classic with the long overdue reboot it so richly deserved. Gone are the days of small, underwhelming ice cream bricks covered in the thinnest veneer of forgettable chocolate that began melting long before you’ve got even halfway through it.

Over the Moo turns traditional choc ice etiquette on its head by providing fully recyclable pouches of gloriously decadent, single-bite chunks of best-in-class, plantbased ice cream.

Back in his youth, Over the Moo founder, Simon Goodman had worked (agency side) on choc ice makeovers which had always fallen flat because of the format wrongly being treated as a novelty as opposed to a standalone ice cream category, which meant quality ingredients were never prioritised.

overthemoo.co.uk

N.B

Whilst in Oz, Simon saw Over the Moo’s lactose-intolerant founder (Alexander Houseman) on the Australian equivalent of Dragon’s Den and knew he’d stumbled across something incredible.

‘My priority,’ insists Simon, ‘Unlike most other plantbased peers was never to prioritize low calorie. My commitment has always been to bitesized, ‘sharing bags’ of guilt-free coconut milk ice cream. That said, at less than 30 calories a bite, Over the Moo is building an enviable reputation as the perfect pass around permissible treat that’s ideally suited to family nights in or a friends and family reunion.’

Over-the-moo launches officially this Summer after 9 months of extensive testing and trialling on the UK’s foodie events circuit. Early doors wins within Mighty Plants, CLF and GoPuff (to name a few) PLUS exporting to UAE (Kibsons), suggests that Over the Moo is making positive ripples with its sustainable vision of ice cream vision that will be taken to delis, food halls, healthier living wholesalers, foodservice and ultimately supermarkets over the coming months.

Within the UK’ vast take-home ice cream arena (£1.4bn), plant-based only represents 4-5% of total ice cream sales, even though 12% of all last year’s innovation was focused on no-dairy ice cream offerings.

Grow your brand profitably on Amazon

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to award Rosetta Brands as our Amazon Vendor Specialist Company of the Month.

Amazon UK started trading in 1998 and has enjoyed a huge growth trajectory over the years. Mintel ecommerce DB estimates that over 90% of British shoppers now use Amazon UK. Amazon isn’t just for major corporations though, it’s perfect for local cottage industries and the FMCG market.

For new Amazon sellers, it can be tricky to navigate the complexities of this online Powerhouse and often find themselves choosing between three fulfilment options:

• Seller Central FBM

• Seller Central FBA

• Vendor Central

With its head office in Nateby, Lancashire, the vendor now has offices in Greater London, Maidenhead and further afield globally in Munich and Brisbane, since expanding their Amazon presence internationally.

Rosetta Brands recognises new food & drink companies as the ‘lifeblood of Ecommerce’ and helps reach optimised sales targets through a tailored strategy, developed by brand-dedicated Amazon account managers and advertising & marketing specialists. With over 10,000 products listed on Amazon UK and over consistently featuring 100 listed within Amazon’s best sellers list, Rosetta Brands can

“We are an Amazon E-commerce-as-aService business for FMCG brands.

We work with everyone from regional producers to PLC’s, helping make Amazon work for them. With a dedicated team of specialists, across advertising, marketing, account management and operations, we can take sellers from unknown to bestseller within

their category. We understand intrinsically how the Amazon Vendor platform works. Our agency team, RB Digital are also there for those brands who want to keep their Amazon account in-house. We can parachute in relevant team members accordingly to elevate brand presence and sales conversions.

With 63% of global consumers now starting product searches directly on Amazon, not search engines, it has become the superlative option. With Amazon growing as a pay-to-play platform both here in the UK and internationally, we are now able to offer our business model to UK, European and Australian brands to not only boost but retain sales.”

It is an exciting time for the Lancashire Vendor, having recently received funding from Rockpool Investments, a London private equity firm. This timely investment has spearheaded future FMCG expansion plans across more European territories: namely Italy, Spain, France, The Netherlands, Poland and Sweden, and long-term looking at North America. With the current Munich office, the vendor is already poised for prime expansion, as the UK is tied with Germany for the most Amazon distribution centres in Europe.

“There is strong European demand for UK food & drink products, especially in Germany, where customers will pay premium rates. This will allow our current UK clients to have a slice of the European Amazon market.”

Farm Frites: the fresh taste of the land

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to select Farm Frites as our Potato-Based Appetisers Company of the Month.

Potatoes are stem tubers, full of starch, potassium, vitamins, minerals and fibre. Known for antioxidant vitamin C properties, they have even been reputed to prevent scurvy in earlier times.

The good news is that potatoes are a highly sustainable choice for our environment, with a low carbon footprint and requiring less land and water than many other crops. As an affordable, widely available food source, they are ideally placed for feeding a growing world population.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, potatoes are a sustainable food source as they produce more food energy per cubic meter of water used, than any other major crop.

Farm Frites is a supplier of added-value potato products to the foodservice industry, from fine dining to quick service restaurant food. Established in 1971 by Gerrit de Bruijne from a barn in Oudenhoorn, the Netherlands, the company has grown to offer premium fries, regular fries, potato specialities and cheesy appetisers. With potato farms distributed across the Benelux, France, Poland, and Egypt, Farm

Frites is totally committed to the sustainable potato farming, as outlined in its latest annual Sustainability Report published this month.

We caught up with Trade Marketer for UK & Ireland, Nic Townsend to find out more about Farm Frites,

“We have a proud history going back to 1971. Our founder, Gerrit de Bruijne, was born in the Hoeksche Waard village of Zuid-Beijerland, The Netherlands. He discovered the potato trade in America, where he saw with his own eyes how potato products such as fries and chips were rapidly gaining popularity.

At home, he borrowed 30,000 Gilders and started processing potatoes into pre-fried fries on a small scale and delivered them in a van.

Nowadays, with our head office at the farm house still in Bruijne’s Oudenhoorn, in the Netherlands, we have expanded to production and sales offices throughout the world, to become a truly, global force.

In the UK, we have sales & marketing foodservice experts, who thoroughly understand the operations and needs of multichannel demands, from large pub groups to independents.

Over the longer term, our goal is to be in the Top 3 potato suppliers worldwide, expanding across our existing potato-based markets and growing in new appetisers ones.”

One of the newest growth areas for the company is its range of delicious appetisers, perfect for all foodservice sectors from gastro pubs, family-run independents to restaurant chains. Farm Frites Appetisers are surefire menu favourites with the general public and kitchen staff. They are quick and easy to prepare, using air/deep fryers or combi/fast ovens and produce low waste. Many pub-goers and restaurant visitors nowadays, like to share snacks with family or friends: akin to ‘grazing-style.’ Eating out has been a more casual affair, with many diners preferring to eat al fresco snacks, alongside their choice of drink.

Farm Frites has carried out research and found that 60% of food operators believe that adding cheese helps items sell better. With a wide range of cheese now available, in varying strengths and flavours, they can be added to both sweet and savoury dishes for more eclectic menu choices.

The full cheese appetisers range includes: Cheese Pops, Chill Cheese Toppers, Mozzarella

Sticks, Camembert Bites, Jalapeño Bites Cream Cheese, Cheddar Bites, Brie Bites and Nacho Cheese Bites, with additional battered and breaded cheeses, chilli cheese toppers, breaded cheese pops and premium cheese sauce. The full onion appetisers range includes: Breaded Onion Rings and Whole Onion Rings Natural Battered.

holding tests have proved that the Cheese Pops stay hot and crunchy after 30 minutes in a delivery bag, making them ideal for food delivery outlets.

The Premium Cheese Topping is a perfect addition to sandwiches, burgers, French fries, pizzas and snacks. The cheese sauce can easily be used in a food pump and is easy to store frozen, chilled or ambient.

The Appetisers range can be presented as a standalone dish, starter or side - as well as ingredient for salads, snacks and fast food trade up.

The Chilli Cheese Toppers are 100% vegetarian, with a rich, creamy cheddar cheese filling and just the right kick of chilli. The delicious, golden batter crust gives a crunchy texture, perfect for sharing with your nearest and dearest and a cool beer, wine or soft beverage of choice.

The Cheese Pops are made with mouth-watering 40-week matured premium Gouda Cheese, with an extra crunchy four-layered crust. Internal

Fresh from the fields and processed into delicious fries, to a new range of delicious, cheesy appetisers, Farm Frites has been at the forefront of potato products since 1971. Combined with a renewed focus on sustainability, these delicious potato-based and cheesy appetizers will delight customers and help foodservice companies reach sustainability targets.

Leading the way in recyclable pump technology

Tseveral off-the-shelf, recyclable pumps with varying flow-rate ranges. In June 2021, Quantex was acquired by PSG, an operating company of Dover Corporation and now sits alongside 13 other pump and flow measurement brands.

Quantex headquarters is located in Hammersmith, London, UK, with a dedicated manufacturing plant in High Wycombe. Through PSG’s acquisition, Quantex is now a part of PSG Dover, providing Quantex with clean room manufacturing facilities in Duisburg, Germany, where Quantex is supported by fellow PSG pump brand; Quattroflow.

“Quantex is the leading provider of recyclable pump technology, where, instead of the pump being a part of the fixed equipment, it is attached directly to the liquid packaging – similar to the way a tap is already connected to a bag in box of wine. But instead of pressing the tap and allowing liquid to dribble out using gravity, the pump is clipped into a motor drive in the fixed equipment, and the product is dispensed accurately, at a range of precision flow rates suitable for all kinds of liquids. When the product supply is finished, you simply replace the bag and pump with a new bag and pump,” stated Gillian Harding-Moore, Director – Marketing.

Quantex’s system is extremely hygienic and requires no costly cleaning or maintenance. The Quantex pumps also maintain vacuum capability which equips them with the ability to handle high viscosities such as mayonnaise, hair conditioner, or glue, and can evacuate the bag by 98%.

“The pumps can also reverse cycle which is widely used for cleaning the nozzle at the end of each dispense by sucking the product back into the pump. Another very exciting capability is its in-pump dilution option, where it can pump high-ratio concentrates, and accurately mix them with water at the point of dispense. This takes water out of the distribution channel, saving the customer both money and carbon

world,” added Gillian.

With the drive to save single-use plastic waste, the wealth of benefits of using Quantex pumps has been recognised by UK and European supermarkets, who have been attempting to trial refill stations, where consumers bring their reusable bottles to refill in stores instead of using single use pre-packaged goods. Dispensing liquids has been proving to be too expensive and labour intensive for shop-floor staff.

“Quantex technology provides the key enabler for scaling up refill in supermarkets, with a low maintenance, low cost and flexible solution that can be standardised for dispensing virtually any fluid. Quantex is working with several refill equipment manufacturers, who are designing their next generation of dispensers around the Quantex system.” Gillian continued, “Several global brands and retailers are excited by the early prototypes that allows product replenishment to be 75% faster, with no cleaning or maintenance, and no drips that cause dangerous slip hazards in supermarket isles. The aim is to provide a better refill experience for consumers and therefore, encourage more refill adoption. The first machines are planned to be in European supermarkets trials from October this year, with a roll-out scheme planned for 2023. It is an exciting market to be in, as it is just the beginning of a big change to the way we shop, and Quantex is sitting at the heart of the movement.”

As the company looks ahead, in addition to Refill, Quantex is moving into the Biopharma market, and aligning with other Dover brands; Quattroflow®, em-tec, Malema®, and CPC®. Gillian added, “The alignment will strengthen our PSG offering, providing pumps, flow measurement solutions and connectors that serve cell and gene therapy and bioprocessing needs from early process development through to upstream and downstream applications.”

MMELLOW: Real Food. Authentic Taste. Peace of Mind

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters, we are delighted to select MMELLOW as our artisan Southern European cheese Company of the Month.

The Guild of Fine Food: World Cheese Awards 2022 selected five goat cheese products for the prestigious ‘Super Gold’ awards, considered by many to be the Oscars of the cheese industry, thereby heralding the new reign of goat cheese.

The fresh Goat Cream cheese from new brand MMELLOW has been nicknamed by founder, Yantcho Kondov as the ‘G.O.A.T,’ (Greatest Of All Time) due to its smooth flavour, outstanding nutritional characteristics and culinary versatility. Made from pasteurised organic goat milk, with no additives or artificial preservatives, it contains less salt than a chocolate bar. Its silky spreadable texture is perfect on sourdough bread, or in fact any bread, and can be used to make delicious toppings in baking, such as on carrot cakes.

With 12 delicious cheese varieties, grouped into Fresh Goat Cream cheese, Grill cheese, Bulgarian White Brined, Yellow / Kashkaval, as well as Gouda-type goat and sheep cheese, there is a perfect choice for even the pickiest connoisseurs. Made by expert producer company: Kondov Ecoproduction Ltd, with over 32 years' experience and partnerships across four continents.

MMELLOW is equally weighted to appeal to the delicatessen and mass cheese market. Products are available in various packaging formats and have an extended shelf life from four to twelve months, perfect for supermarket dairy aisles.

“MMELLOW is the only cheese brand that aims to put all types under one umbrella, in a holistic vision of what the contemporary health-conscious, socially-aware and digitally-native customer wants to have.

All the cheese varieties are organic-certified, using sustainable farming methods from the Balkan mountainous regions. The free-range livestock feeds on fresh grassland, on pastures designed to promote local biodiversity and eco-systems. With consumer-demand for organic cheese at an all-time high, all MMELLOW cheese is designed for the sustainable age. With several low-lactose varieties available, the products are weighted with inclusivity in mind. The Halal certification furthermore, makes the product range highly suitable for communities with large Muslim populations,” adds Yantcho.

“Our producer company was established in 1991 by my father: Ognian Kondov, with the idea to utilise the centuries-old know-how of cheese-making in Bulgaria. We recently decided to modernise our organic image by introducing an innovative brand concept: MMELLOW.

Three core values define our brand: ‘Real Food. Authentic Taste. Peace of Mind.’ We are driven by the formation of a ‘MMELLOW cheese lovers’ community, with a cross-over of Millennial love for avocado and feta salads and GenZ’s health-conscious preference for low-salt and sustainably-sourced food.

All cheese is manufactured in the EU (Bulgaria) and all milk is locally sourced. We specialise in cheese-making and our commercial focus is predominantly B2B. We partner with multiple organic certified farmers from all over the country as we are one of the regional pioneers of organic dairy. We seek the right distribution partners in each geography of interest, who will know their respective markets well and place our products according to the formula that suits them best, including the option to work under private label arrangements. We also work directly with retailers, providing an adequate logistics chain could be arranged. Aytac Foods is our importing and distributing partner for the UK and Ireland, Aytac have two hubs, one in London and one in the Greater Manchester area, 30 sales reps covering all of UK and Ireland, and also an online ordering option." explained founder, Yantcho Kondov.

Despite only launching this year, MMELLOW already has distribution partnerships across Europe (Bulgaria, Romania, UK/Ireland and Germany), the Far East (Vietnam) and the GCC region with possible new markets in the Nordic region, Poland and Slovakia opening shortly. Looking towards the longer-term, the brand is hoping to expand further into Asia and North America.

MMELLOW will be at: Nordic Organic Food Fair (Sweden): 15-16 Nov 2023

The London Coffee Festival 2023

The London Coffee Festival was back at The Truman Brewery this year from 20-23 April, showcasing the best products across the coffee industry. The event originally grew from the thriving London coffee scene, and this year played host to 30,000 visitors and 250 artisan coffee and gourmet food stalls.

The festival was organised across four floors, including the firm festival favourite: The Artisan Café, a pop-up rotating coffee shop, with independent coffee shops showcasing their wares. The Roasters Village had coffee roasters in residence across the four-day event and the second floor was home to foodie delights, everything from pie-makers, Lebanese cuisine, to a cosy slice of Danish bakery Hygge.

For those that love coffee-flavoured syrups, expert suppliers: IBC Simply were on hand to showcase their extensive range of coffee syrups. The range included sugar-free, nut-free varieties and organic varieties, and are vegan and vegetarian-approved, with many suitable for halal-based diets. The delicious flavours include: amaretto, caramel, French vanilla and pistachio, with the syrups also suitable for frappes, cocktails, smoothies and milkshakes.

There was a big push on sustainability this year, with visitors encouraged to bring their own reusable coffee cups, to get their own Sustainable Coffee Flight Passports stamped along the way. The official festival coffee cups were made from plant and entirely compostable, signalling the coffee industry’s journey to a circular economy.

Veteran sustainability experts: Circular & Co have been moving from a linear economy to a circular/lake model

for decades, with their popular reusable coffee cups. Voted Best Overall Reusable Coffee Cup in 2021/2022 by The Independent, the design is 100% leakproof, with insulated layers, the exterior is made from beach waste and recycled plastic, giving a solid 10-year product lifespan.

The Bag Broker UK exhibited a wide range of custom coffee bags, coffee cups and cylinders for packaging coffee beans, perfect for coffee roasters and independent coffee shops. The coffee bags are fully customised, with expert artwork and the cylinder packaging is a favourite amongst coffee roasters. The pillow pouch inside provides optimal long-term storage of coffee beans and ground coffee, offering protection during shipping transit. Furthermore, the eco-friendly custom-printed coffee cups can feature company logos or artwork, designed to impress customers and can be made with inner compostable material like PLA and outer bamboo fiber paper.

Celebrated coffee roasters: Brew Coffee Plus brought a delicious product range of seasonal filter and expresso coffee. With a strong emphasis on traceability, the coffee beans are expertly roasted and come from Burundi, Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Brazil and Ethiopia. The artisan team also offer a consultancy service for independent coffee shop owners, a comprehensive contract roasting service and a wholesale machinery equipment range.

Every pet deserves a happy mealtime

Mealtimes bring great joy to both pets and their owners across the nation with much drooling, tail wagging and excited anticipation of the bowl reaching the floor, but sadly, that isn’t the case for all households during the cost of living crisis. While staff and volunteers at Fareshare have been working tirelessly to get good to eat food to people most impacted by the cost of living crisis, many are having to choose between feeding themselves or their pets.

According to research by Dogs Trust nearly half (48 per cent) of dog owners are finding it difficult to give their dog all they need, compared to before the

cost of living crisis, and one in five (23 per cent) are worried about the expense of dog food.

What’s more is a further 29 per cent of pet owners say they had not considered the costs before purchasing a pet, and 18 per cent say that their pets are more expensive than first expected.

That’s why Petplan teamed up with some of the UK's leading animal charities and FareShare to launch the UK Pet Food Partnership and help make mealtimes happy again.

FareShare distributes food across the UK through a

network of over 30 warehouses, 8,500 charities and countless volunteers who help deliver 128 million meals of year of human food to people who need it most.

The Partnership, made up of Petplan and a number of animal charities including Dogs Trust and Battersea, have worked with pet food companies to help get surplus and donated pet food out to pet owners across the UK, using FareShare’s nationwide distribution network.

They provide food to charities all over the UK that help tackle the root causes of poverty, and provide vital wraparound services including domestic violence shelters, after school clubs and breakfast clubs, and older people’s lunch clubs.

To help ensure that all pets are given the opportunity of a happy dinner time, Petplan generously donated £100,000 to help towards the costs of distributing pet food, and help feed hungry pets in the face of the cost of living crisis.

To date, The Pet Food Partnership has received 137,446 kilograms of pet food, the equivalent of over 583,545 meals for hungry pets across the UK, who might not otherwise have been fed a proper meal that day.

Thanks to the support of the animal welfare charities, and the donation from Pet Plan, the Partnership can get to help pets and pet owners alike.

PET FOOD MATTERS

Mr Bug – Leading the line in mealworm pet food nutrition

Mr Bug is building an enviable reputation as the UK’s first DEFRA approved mealworm bug farm, a sustainably-honed champion of all-natural mealworm nutrition.

Dried mealworms contain 53% protein, 28% fat, 6% fibre, 5% moisture and the complement of beneficial amino acids and minerals.

Yes, there are other bug-oriented foods within the pet food marketplace, but most champion ‘cattle feed favourite,’ black fly larvae. Conal and Paul were determined to take a stand for the humble mealworm, the undisputed Rolls Royce of nutritious grubs, marrying a gastronomic, nutty twang with a headturning array of nutritional stardust.

Simply put, mealworms offer a tasty hypoallergenic mono-protein without equal!

During Lockdown Conal returned to the countryside, seeing an opportunity to develop an indoor highly intensive protein farm insulated from the effects of climate change.

A FEW FUN FACTS

- mealworms contain: More B12 than salmon, More calcium than milk, More iron than spinach AND all 9 essential amino acids

According to Conal, ‘The idea of owning a sustainable insect farm had been burrowing away for a while, so I sat down with my friend Paul and convinced him over a few beers to join me..’

Mr Bug supports the circular economy. In Mr Bug’s case the seamless pathway revolves around mealworms brought up on Cornish bran, a vitaminrich by-product of Cornish wheat milling which makes a highly digestible, healthy mono-protein. The resulting by-product of frass (mealworm manure) acts as a nutritious, all-natural fertiliser that is returned to local, wheat farms.

Mealworm powder mixes effortlessly with bestin-class real foods creating addictive crunchy Bug Bites treats incorporating ingredients such as apples, parsnips, cranberries, sweet potatoes, honey, peanut butter, beetroot and vegan cheese

‘We were determined offer all-natural treats that were the antithesis of old-school dog treats loaded with salt, sugar, lazy fillers, low-grade meats and synthetic nasties.’

Vertical farming depends on significant technological advances, which explains Mr Bug’s pride at receiving a prestigious government-backed Innovate UK grant. ‘Such fantastic financial support enables Mr Bug to dig deeper and understand mealworm habits and behaviour,’ concludes Conal. ‘By developing ‘self-cleaning’ rearing trays plus robotic cameras with heat sensors to streamline feeding and act as an ‘early warning’ system regards disease and pests, we hope to optimise our farming methods allowing us to scale up and expand into other markets .’

The 12 months Mr Bug has secured Nourish Gold, a Blue Patch rosette, Good Shopping Guide accreditation and Global Good recognition.

PET FOOD MATTERS

Riso Gallo introduces the winner their Young Risotto Chef of the 2023 competition

In this issue of Food & Drink Matters we are proud to announce Riso Gallo as our Italian risotto rice Company of the Year.

Risotto rice is synonymous with Italy, conjuring up feasts such as the hearty Risotto con Gamberi with fresh shrimps or the springtime, soupy Risi e Bisi, made with peas and lashings of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Italian cuisine ranks as one of the most popular across the UK, with Ristorantes and Trattorias often full and BBC MasterChef frequently featuring the latest in creative risotto dishes. A hearty risotto dish makes a great statement centrepiece: perfect for mid-week family gatherings or weekend entertaining with friends. Risotto is

incredibly versatile, blending well with autumnal pumpkin, fresh seafood and shallots, layered with lemon zest: there is a perfect risotto dish for everyone.

Across the hospitality, foodservice sector and food retailers, there is only one unmistakeable risotto rice brand: Riso Gallo. Established in 1856, Riso Gallo is the oldest risotto rice producer in Italy and has been lovingly delivering to customers across the world for over six generations from its rice mill in Robbio, Lomellina. We chatted to Jason Morrison, MD Riso Gallo UK to find out more,

“Riso Gallo is one of the longest surviving rice companies in Italy and it is

still growing. It is owned, and still run by the Preve family, in Italy.

The Gallo 1856 logo has been recognised by the Economic department of the Italian Government as a historical Italian brand, and has been listed into the special national Italian registry of trademarks. Our mission is to spread the culture of rice and risotto throughout the world by using innovation that constantly adapts to the needs of the modern consumer.”

At the heart of Riso Gallo is the production of the best premium risotto rice: Arborio, Gallo traditional risotto and the ‘king caviar’ of risotto: Carnaroli. At the Quality System and

Research and Development Centre in Robbio, Lomellina, the research team are focussed on continued risotto rice innovation and sustainable agricultural projects, as Jason elaborates,

at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which took place last year. Each competitor was judged by some of the best Michelin Head Chefs across the country and it was the perfect opportunity for young, budding chefs to showcase their risotto culinary skills and network with some of the greatest, experienced chefs.

Emily Simkins, a level 3 Advanced Professional Cookery student at North Hertfordshie College took the 2023 Young Risotto Chef title with a showstopping dish. Showcasing Jerusalem Artichoke that incorporated a ‘zero waste’ theme and a rich, earthy flavour of the creamy artichoke purée that worked very well with the crisp texture of the nutty Artichoke Bark and the salty Yorkshire Pecorino ‘Leeds Blue’ cheese, Emily then garnished her dish with nasturtium leaves and alyssum flowers to visually enhance the ‘woodland’ theme. The dish was universally celebrated by the team of Judges led by Paul Gayler MBE. Two very worthy runners up included Lee McDonagh and Nathan Cooper.

Sustainability and CSR is at the heart of everything we do, from the field to the fork, so in effect from where the rice is grown until it arrives on the plate. The biggest selling products are also in packaging that can be recycled. The rice mill now also runs on 100% renewable electric energy.”

One of the latest innovations to come from the R&D centre is the new Riso Gallo Carnaroli Risotto 1856 range: made with 100% premium Italian Carnaroli rice, it is quick to make at home for a tasty supper or filling lunchtime treat. The cook-at-home risotto range is suitable for vegans and coeliacs, making this an inclusive, family staple mealtime favourite. The mouth-watering range comes in four delicious flavours: porcini mushroom, saffron, vegetables and tomato & basil.

This family-run company is committed to taste innovation, through optimal agricultural sustainability but it doesn’t stop there.

Every year Riso Gallo sponsors the UK & Ireland Young Risotto Chef. The competition is aimed at 17–23-year-olds, studying catering colleges courses or working in the catering industry. The 2023 competition had regional heats across the country with the grand finale

these ingenious, tasty products.

“Peppadew International is a story of passion and dedication, a desire to create the state of the art and an enthusiasm to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. It all started over 25 years ago, when the discovery of a bright red pepper led to the incorporation of Peppadew International. Having identified the Piquanté Pepper as a new variety of fruit, a signature flavour was carefully crafted and PEPPADEW® presented the world with its first Sweet Piquanté Pepper. Since then, PEPPADEW® has sought to maintain this first to market approach and has introduced a number of exclusive and unique offerings, including Yellow Sweet Piquanté Peppers that launched this year and are exclusive to Waitrose.

While the PEPPADEW® product range has seen significant growth, expansion has been equally evident in its global reach and what started as a modest production facility in the hills of Limpopo, South Africa, has grown into a global food brand. Years of ingenuity has not only led to unprecedented culinary experiences along the way, but also to the development of manufacturing operations of the highest standards. It’s because of these standards that we are proud to supply PEPPADEW® products to some of the world’s largest retailers and food manufacturers, in over 25 countries around the world.”

From a small cottage farm industry, to a global taste explosion: the PEPPADEW® brand is now synonymous with premium

purveyors of sweet piquanté peppers. The PEPPADEW® sweet piquanté peppers are deseeded by hand and the sweet tangy flavours are enhanced through the pickling process. Described as a firm, crunchy pepper with mild heat properties, they are infused with vitamin C and packed with antioxidants, perfect for health-conscious consumers.

With a UK head office in Leatherhead, Surrey and a factory in Weston Super Mare, the company is ready for us to explore the wonderful world of PEPPADEW® Bites. Stuffed with the highest-quality ingredients, the bites are vegetarian, free from artificial colouring and preservatives and best of all, ready in three-four minutes: from frozen to deep-fry. premium cheese, pepper delight, without the food miles or carbon footprint.

“We are aiming PEPPADEW® Bites at catering managers, foodservice buyers, chefs, restaurants, pubs and independent cafés. Our product is unique, crafted, versatile and is a surefire culinary hit, whether served as a tapas starter, side dish or part of a sharing platter.”

We asked Independent Toluna Insight to carry out some targeted market research with 1,000 customers, to find out more about how our PEPPADEW® Bites are perceived. The results were overwhelmingly positive, with 87% happy to buy the bites and 82% perceiving the bites as a premium quality menu item. Furthermore, eight out of ten consumers said they would like to see the

bites offered on menus across the country and over half would pay more for bites than Jalapeño Poppers. This proves conclusively, that there is strong market curiosity and demand for our latest product offering: the PEPPADEW® Bites.

In a recent sample drive of 800 Independent pubs and restaurants, 82% said that PEPPADEW® Bites’ “easy prep, no waste” was important to them when purchasing.

“We are looking for more trade interest in the bites but we’re not stopping there, we are looking to launch oven-ready PEPPADEW® Bites in the near future, we have 4 flavours to try at Casual Dining to further improve our product range.” concludes Simon.

Peppadew will be at the Casual Dining Casual Dining show at the ExCeL on 27th to 28th September. Visit them on stand CD521, which is at the entrance of the show.

Factory automation made easy –with radar sensor VEGAPULS 42

With VEGAPULS 42, VEGA brings its extensive experience with radar measurement technology to factory automation. Equipped with IO-Link and versatile hygienic adapters, the new level sensor meets the key requirements of modern industry: to perform complex measuring tasks faster, be simple to use and more cost-effective.

VEGA has launched a new radar level sensor especially for highly automated processes with stringent demands on hygiene and capable of following fast level change s. By introducing VEGAPULS 42, the instrumentation specialist completes its IO-Link portfolio, which now offers a range of solutions for level measurement, point level and pressure.

Radar reduced to the essentials

Since the various automation technologies in many factory environments are increasingly converging, VEGA’s IO-Link portfolio is now able to offer optimal solutions for applications that extend beyond the boundaries of primary processes. “Our customers can rest assured that they’re in good hands with us for all their applications,” says VEGA product manager Marvin Moser, explaining the current situation. “This requires us to proceed with the greatest care. For that reason, we’ve carefully integrated cutting-edge technology into all the main functions of this sensor. At the same time, we’ve consistently refrained from ‘over-designing’ the sensor. That means it has also been stripped of everything that makes it unnecessarily expensive and technically over-complex.”

Everything but complicated

This means that VEGAPULS 42 is designed specifically for medium measuring distances of up to 15 metres and temperatures of up to max. 150 °C. The instrument is geared to circulation systems in production, dosing processes and downstream processes, like those found in conveying and filling systems. It ensures a smooth-running process wherever a level changes quickly and requires continuous monitoring. Or in short, VEGAPULS 42 design has been focused on what is absolutely necessary, it is tailor-made for all standard applications

where more functions would only make things more complicated.

A big lead in radar know-how

“If you can do the one, you can also do the other,” it is often said, referring to the merging of process automation and factory automation. However, the two areas are so different from each other that it is easier for the measurement technology of process automation to establish itself in factory automation than the other way around.nVEGA’s success story, which culminated in its current position as the world market leader in radar level instrumentation, began more than 30 years ago. The company is now applying the experience and knowledge gained to factory automation solutions. Accordingly, VEGAPULS 42 is based on the best radar chip currently available on the market – with the widest dynamic range, which offers excellent performance and application versatility.

High quality stripped down to the basics

To still be able to monitor current operating states in a highly efficient and cost-optimised manner, every design element of the chip was critically examined for its usefulness. The same

principle applied to the IO-Link communication technology, which is common in factory automation, enabling bidirectional data transmission together with extensive diagnostics and parameterisation. For IO-Link sensor VEGAPULS 42 this means: maximum signal quality at minimal cost and complexity.

Radar is the better choice

With the instruments in its IO-Link portfolio, VEGA now adds the advantages of radar measurement technology to a wide variety of processes in factory automation and focusses even more on hygiene-critical industries like food and pharmaceuticals. Radar is the right choice for continuous, non-contact level measurement because, unlike ultrasonic sensors, it is not influenced by the process and ambient operating conditions. Use of the most reliable, cost-effectivemeasurement technology available makes all the difference, especially in factory automation.

Myth, a drink that thinks outside of the bottle

My vision for Myth was to create a spirit style drink which could be the base of a simple serve or a more elaborate cocktail. I wanted to elevate a mocktail, a term which I particularly dislike as it suggests a child’s drink or something less than real, into a sober serve, relevant to the time and occasion it is being offered. I explored several options searching for a great flavour profile, versatility, fun and colour! It quite soon became apparent that Malibu was the epitome of this for me, holidays and sun-drenched beaches, sun downers and sandy toes. I wanted

to translate this holiday vibe into a bottle and I believe myself and my team have achieved just that.

Sunny days don’t last forever so when warm nights in by the fire began to call I wanted an expression of this for my glass to. Myth Dark Spiced is the perfect blend for a classic mix of cola or ginger or a bold adventure into an Espresso based cocktail. However you find your perfect serve lets raise a glass to friends and smiles.
